Toyota i-Road hits the streets in first public trials oyota has launched the first public trials of its ultra-compact i-Road electric three-wheeled “personal mobility vehicle” to find out how it shapes up in the cut-and-thrust of real-world urban driving. Consumer testing in Tokyo has started to run from the 24th of March through to early June, with 10 of the single-seater vehicles taking to the city streets. The 20 people involved in the programme range from industry experts through to members of the general public, so that Toyota can gain a wide range of feedback on what i-Road is like to drive, how easy it is to use around town, how it affects people’s decisions about what journeys to make and driver satisfaction. The vehicles are based on the concept versions shown at last year’s Tokyo motor show, but with adjustments to improve visibility, ease of use and maneuverability. Its compact, slim shape and 300kg kerb weight make i-Road as nimble to handle in traffic as a scooter, but with car-like stability thanks to its two-at-the-front-one-at-therear wheel configuration and a clever, Toyota engineered leaning attitude when cornering. More research into i-Road’s potential as a valuable addition to community-based transport networks is under way in Toyota City, where it has recently been introduced into the experimental Ha:mo low carbon

urban transport project. It is also coming to Europe this year with two-seater models set to take part in a vehicle sharing programme that will operate in the French city of Grenoble over the next four years. Mercedes-Benz GLA on test – enrich your driving M Text & photos by John Peel
ercedes-Benz is rigorously continuing with its bold design initiatives and the new GLA makes a dynamic statement in the strongly growing segment of the compact SUV. The powerful-distinctive design exudes style from the aggressive front end right up to its high rear end. The design of the new GLA impressively demonstrates just what the S in SUV stands for. Sportiness – from every perspective. It is not often that one gets to spend a whole afternoon in harmony with a special machine, free to drive aimlessly solely to enjoy the experience. The GLA is a special machine, not simply by being a Mercedes-Benz but especially because it breaks away from design we usually associate with Mercedes into the SUV sector. In keeping with the principles of economic efficiency and synergies that pervades the motor industry these days, the new GLA is built on the same platform as the current A-Class, CLA and B-Class. The new AClass and CLA are radically different to what’s gone before, with modern, stylish looks both externally and internally. This GLA follows suit and aims at taking a slice of the competitive compact premium SUV market, a rapidly growing segment that’s predicted to treble in size over the next decade. In the flesh the GLA is far more car-like in comparison to most SUV’s. It tries to look muscular with high-rise wheel arches, underbody protection panels front and rear and contrasting dark grey cladding, yet appears smaller in stature to most of its rivals. While it might not be as rugged-looking as some might wish, being similar to the A-Class is a plus as the GLA’s relatively lower centre of gravity benefits the handling
immensely. It’s powered by a 2.2litre four-cylinder diesel engine that produces a satisfactory 136bhp and 300Nm of torque. Its power is fed to the front wheels, making it the first frontwheel-drive SUV to wear the three-pointed star. As with the chassis, the GLA’s interior follows a familiar architecture that we’ve already experienced in the A-Class and CLA. It’s modern and functional with a clear layout of the main controls. The driving position is central, with the steering wheel, seat and pedals are in line with each other. Particularly pleasing is the large driver’s instrument cluster that comes to life in dim light and an infotainment display screen in the centre of the dashboard that on first glance looks like a tablet placed in a prepared position. Rear-seat occupants are afforded plenty of headroom, and the boot can accommodate 421 litres of luggage; this can be expanded to 836 litres with the rear seats folded. Driving along the Coast Road and uphill toward Cirkewwa via Mellieha the GLA 200 CDI proved competent, with more than sufficient power to pull itself smoothly up the steep gradients. It offers a refined drive with plush levels of comfort for all occupants. I was pleasantly surprised with the super smooth automatic gearbox that provided seamless gear changes courtesy of its double-clutch system. There is absolutely no auto lag and drive is taken up as fast if not faster than a manual gearbox, simply top class. The electromechanical power steering is also worth a mention with an accurate feel that inspires confidence. Even at high speeds sound insulation is superb and the cabin remains peaceful, although roundabouts and junction seemed to be turning up pretty quick as the car gives the impression that it travels at a much lower speed due to its superb all round smoothness.
The driving experience is the GLA’s strong point, along with its sporty looks that are sure to attract the younger buyer, as long as they can afford it. If you wish to tackle some mild off-road terrain these models have a higher clearance I don’t envisage
anyone in reality straying further from a dusty lane or packed soil, at least I wouldn’t fearing the odd scratch here and there. The Mercedes-Benz GLA250 is now available and should make for a classy all-around vehicle: commuter, errand runner, and
weekend road-tripper, for couples, parents with one child, and the young at heart. Think of the Mercedes-Benz GLA as a more comfortable, luxurious, and practical alternative to a family hatch with mascular SUV looks.

The Rabat to Rabat Vintage Motors Festival 2014 Albert Pisani Secretary – Federazzjoni Maltija Vetturi Antiki he Federazzjoni Maltija Vetturi Antiki successfully organised the 6th edition of the Rabat to Rabat Vintage Motors Festival 2014. The event endeavours to promote both the use and display of the finest examples of what Maltese and Gozitan enthusiasts have to offer by way of historic vehicles. This is achieved by dividing the event into two distinct but complementary activities: a Regularity Run, held over two days in Malta and Gozo, and no less than three rotating static displays held in Gozo for the viewing public to enjoy. Numbering 34 vehicles in total, the oldest being a 1923 original and unrestored Triumph SD with Gloria sidecar, left Rabat on the first leg of the 65 mile Regularity

Run taking in Dingli, Lunzjata Santa Katerina and Chadwick Lakes, before finally proceeding to a well deserved half hour break and refreshment, outside the Mdina Glass factory in Ta’ Qali. From here they proceeded to finish at Mellieha, via Zebbug, Attard, Mosta, Bidnija, San Martin, Mizieb, and Manikata, with most then proceeding to Gozo directly, for a well deserved rest. On Sunday it was Gozo’s turn to host the event. The Regularity participants all mustered in Ghajnsielem centre for the ten o’clock start of the second leg, whilst their static show counterparts, close to 100 in number, were making their way to the three pre-established locations, namely Victoria, Nadur and Xaghra to set up the three shows. In Gozo, the Regularity Run followed a counter clockwise scenic route, taking in most of the
island’s north east coast as well as Qala, Nadur and Ramla, then proceeding to Marsalforn for a half hour break. Concurrently the three static shows where doing their planned location rotation, giving the viewing public a fresh display every two hours. The glorious sunshine on the day made the restart of the regularity run from Marsalforn that much harder, but participants in convertibles soon had their soft tops down to enjoy the added bonus of such glorious weather. There was still 15 miles of route to follow before getting to the finish in Rabat, so crews had to keep their wits about them not to get caught out at the various controls awaiting them on the route. Still following a counter clockwise route the vehicles proceeded to the south west coast to finish in Rabat at 1pm, passing through Qbajjar, Zebbug,
Ghasri, Kercem, Xlendi and Munxar. The subsequent one and a half hours was a frantic time for the organizers, having to calculate all the participants’ timings and translate them into penalties, thus enabling them to select the various class and overall winners. The prize giving ceremony was held in Nadur and was presided over by the Hon. Minister for Gozo Dr. Anton Refalo who amongst other things thanked the FMVA for bringing the event over to Gozo thus aiding in the Island’s tourism. He then went on to present the various participation, class and overall awards. In the Motorcycle Class, first second and third awards went to Julian Xuereb, Paul Bonello and Joe Anastasi, the latter also managed to scoop up the Oldest Vehicle to Finish award with his 1928 Triumph NSD which never missed a beat on the whole event. The four wheeled counterpart
winners were Tony Vassallo, Ivan Sammut and Mario Scicluna and the overall award went to Julian Xuereb, who riding his 1941 BSA M20 with sidecar only managed to drop 33 penalty points during the whole event. The Federazzjoni Maltija Vetturi Antiki would like to sincerely thank all participants and heartfelt thanks are due to all who contributed to make this event such a resounding success. Special thanks go out to the organisers and the marshals’ team, without whom the regularity run would not have taken place.
