Garnett S. Stokes, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, formed a Task

Force on Academic Program Analysis, Enhancement, and Opportunities on June 30, taking another step to evaluate MU’s budget decisions. During the initial phase, which began with several meetings in July and August, the task force collected data relevant to academic programs’ success and progress in order to prepare a general outline and get a sense of where programs stand. On Sept. 1, that outline was released to relevant parties involved and will be released publicly shortly, said Dr. Cooper Drury, co-chair of the

task force and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The goal of the task force is to make recommendations “regarding areas of future investment, potential consolidations, and in some cases, program discontinuance” after analyzing all of MU’s academic programs, according to a press release. “There are three general goals: Where are areas that we can invest? What are our strengths, our areas of growth?” said Dr. Matthew Martens, co-chair of the task force and faculty

fellow for academic programs for the Office of the Provost. “Next, where are our areas that we might be able to combine? Do we have overlap, do we have programs in areas that are kind of doing similar things and if you put them together, they get stronger? … And then what are programs that we can’t support anymore, for whatever reason?” The report “will focus on synthesizing relevant data, identifying principles, guidelines, and metrics

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently granted the College of Veterinary Medicine $460,000 for professor of parasitology Roger Stich’s research project on tick-borne diseases, specifically anaplasmosis. Stich, among other professors and graduate students at MU, will research alternative approaches to interfere with the pathogen in ticks. When diseased ticks feed on livestock, they can spread the disease to the animals. This is just the beginning of what is projected to be a three-year-long project, Stich said. He and his team have been working on it since about June, when they were first awarded the grant. “It’s going to be a long process. The University of Missouri hired Dyad Strategies in late July to compare MU’s Greek Life policies with other universities’ around the country and recommend any changes. Dyad Strategies will also be providing training and workshops to active members to supplement its policy recommendations. “We are happy that the university brought in Dyad Strategies to conduct a review of Mizzou’s Greek community,� IFC Vice President of Public Relations Trevor Beshear said in

an email. “The fact that so many stakeholders within the Greek community, including the IFC and our member organizations, have been heard makes us believe this will be a valuable step in strengthening Greek Life at Mizzou.� In recent years, MU Greek Life has been rocked by the scandals of several fraternities, including Kappa Alpha Order and Sigma Pi, which resulted in a five-year ban for KAO and a permanent ban for Sigma Pi. However, according to Liz McCune of the MU News Bureau, no specific incident occurred to bring Dyad in. Instead, vice chancellor for student affairs Gary Ward consulted with the MU General Counsel and the counsel thought that with the change in leadership at MU it would be a good time to review Greek Life policies. Earlier this year, Ward was named interim vice chancellor for student affairs in addition to retaining his position as vice chancellor for operations.

Dyad started work at MU in July and will finish in September. Since its founding in 2014, Dyad Strategies has represented over 25 universities nationwide, including Southeastern Conference schools such as the University of Mississippi, Vanderbilt University and the University of Georgia. “[Dyad Strategies was chosen] because of their national reputation, because they’ve worked so extensively with other universities,� McCune said. MU will pay a total of $22,000 for the company’s services, according to McCune. MU is facing a $20-million budget shortfall this year, forcing a five-percent budget cut and a hiring freeze. “We’re scrutinizing all expenditures, particularly during this challenging financial time, and we entered this contract because it will help the university to enhance Greek Life and ultimately the student experience,� McCune said. On the very top of Dr. Matt Burns’ desk in room 109 of Hill Hall sits an impressive collection of what many researchers may not consider important: mugs. With logos ranging from Vanderbilt University to MU, this ceramic display reflects each university Burns has been invited to speak at. As admirable as it may seem, a recent study from researchers Victor Villarreal and Ileana Umaña may lead to the avid reader and father of two finding his collection growing. A study published this summer titled “Intervention research productivity from 2005 to 2014: Faculty and university representation in school psychology journals”

noted that Burns has been the most productive researcher in his field in the past decade.

The study calculates an “authorship credit score” by accounting for the number of articles the author

has written and how much they contributed to each article. While over 95 percent of authors included in the study received authorship credit scores of less than one, Burns’ score was 5.21. “It’s really exciting,” Burns said of the achievement. “It’s always nice to see that you’re being a productive researcher and that people are noticing your work.” His research focuses on intervention in school psychology. In essence, he looks at methods that help children with learning disabilities in school, primarily with reading and math. He accomplishes this by collecting data from schools with his research team, the Center for Collaborative Solutions for Kids, Practice and Policy, also known as SKiPP. “We created [SKiPP] for a couple of reasons, but one of the main reasons was for teachers and parents to have a place to get an idea of what to try with kids,” said Burns, who is currently teaching a class on interventions this semester. However, Villarreal and Umaña are not the only ones who have acknowledged Burns and his team. In a 2012 study titled “Scholarly Productivity and Impact of School

MU is introducing a new online master’s degree for students in general special education. “With this program, we wanted to broaden our reach and reach people in different states and people in Missouri who don’t have the time to drive to Columbia,” said Erica Lembke, chair of the department of special education. The 33-credit-hour program offers a Master of Arts degree in special education and instructs teachers on how to better help students who have multiple disabilities, also known as cross-categorical learners. Applications are now being accepted until Oct. 1 and online courses start for the spring 2018 semester in January. According to the Mizzou Online

website, the estimated program cost is $13,744.17 and because it is a distance learning program, even out-of-state students can qualify for in-state tuition. “I worked with a lot of teachers in St. Louis who all wanted a Mizzou master’s but couldn’t drive out to Columbia to take our classes,” Lembke said. “We want to offer more flexibility for our students and broaden our reach.” Students in the program are able to get their degree completely online and, if they follow a certain schedule, can obtain their degree in as little as two years. The program affords working students a more convenient opportunity to further their education. “We have been thinking about online education in relation to working professionals,” said Kathryn Chval, dean of the College of Education. “This online option really is the best choice for [working] teachers.” Since the 1990s, schools have had fewer teachers than they need for certain subject areas such as math, history, science, art and special education, according to a report by the U.S Department of Education. “There is a really strong demand for special education teachers, so it is important for us to meet the needs of our stakeholders,” Lembke said.

According to the U.S Department of Education, Missouri is in need of special education teachers who specialize in blind and partial sight, deaf and the hearing impaired, mild to moderate cross-categorical, severe developmental disabilities, speech pathology and special reading. Teachers specializing in these disabilities are

needed for almost every single grade level, from pre-K to grade 12. “The workforce need is so great,” Chval said. “This program serves the need of Missouri to provide more special education teachers.”

with the University of Missouri, distribution of materials does not constitute a violation of applicable state or federal laws, [and] materials are not distributed from unmanned receptacles or left in unmanned piles (e.g., leaflets left on vehicles are prohibited).” Since Midwestern Alliance followed this policy, the university cannot take any further action. As long as an individual follows the policies and peacefully states their opinion, MU cannot restrict it. “In a classroom, the university can make sure that the speech that’s going on is all about the topic of the class,” said Lyrissa Lidsky, dean of MU law school and acclaimed First Amendment

that will inform additional discussion regarding our academic programs,” according to the press release. “There’s quite a bit of quantitative data we can use that can track the number of students graduated, credit hours, stuff like that,” Drury said. “We can track research productivity, grant productivity — but then there are other things that are less tangible that are still extremely important. So we’re figuring out at this stage how we’ll take those things into account, the qualitative measures.” During the next phase, the task force will speak to faculty, administration and student groups to establish a

scholar. “But, in these common areas that have been designated for use as free speech areas for students and visitors, the university cannot impose what are called content-based restrictions on the speech. In other words, the university is not allowed to take the speech down or punish the speaker just because they don’t like what the speaker said.” Speech, on campus and off campus, is protected by the First Amendment. Even if the speech isn’t agreeable, it cannot be restricted. “One of the things that I think is commonly misunderstood is people think that hate speech is a category that can be legally restricted,” Lidsky said. “Hate speech is not itself a legal category. Speech that’s hateful and offensive is often protected by the First Amendment, unless it falls into a category like true threats, incitement, obscenity or libel.” The only way MU can restrict

speech is through the method the speech is being delivered. For instance, MU is allowed to restrict the use of megaphones, but not the message the speaker is trying to say. After the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 12, universities across the country have been taking action to weed out potential white supremacy movements from their campuses, some even restricting white supremacy speakers. On Aug. 17, Michigan State University didn’t allow white supremacist Richard Spencer to speak on campus due to security concerns. Lidsky said that many other universities have also restricted white supremacist leaders out of concern for the security of their students, not a speaker’s content. She also expressed a possibility for legal action. “It’s my understanding that there may be lawsuits to follow based on the argument that [Michigan State

University] unconstitutionally restricted the free speech rights of Mr. Spencer,” Lidsky said. MU spokesman Christian Basi said that if a similar request were to happen at MU, his department would have to examine it. “We’ve had many speakers on campus that have talked about topics that are controversial in nature,” Basi said. “We’re very proud of the fact that we’ve been able to have ongoing discussions about controversial topics so that people have the opportunity to listen if they so desire and extend the discussion about these topics, because that’s what the university is about, in part, here to do.” Basi also mentioned that MU doesn’t like to restrict speech even if the message is unagreeable, as long as it’s being delivered in a peaceful manner. rapport with all departments and try to understand programs on a more personal and insightful level. “In the second phase, which we’ve actually started already in terms of meeting with people, our group will get out and meet with various groups to get their ideas, their input,” Martens said. “The next phase … is making sure that along with the perspective of administrators, along with the perspective of faculty, what do students think about this topic, and what are their ideas that we need to take into consideration?” The final report for the task force will come on Jan. 15 and will contain a final summary recommending specifics about how the MU administration should act on academic programs. “Our job is to make recommendations,” Martens said. “It’ll be up to senior administrators on

campus and in the colleges to end up making final decisions, but it’s going to be important for us to get student input into this process.” The task force is comprised of 15 faculty members in addition to co-chairs Drury and Martens. Stokes’ first priority when selecting members for the committee was that they had worked with people throughout campus and thus had a good jumping-off point with many units and departments. “This was a group of people that … has experience from across the campus, not just their one unit, and could in a sense, think or see perspectives of other colleges and departments,” Drury said. Representatives from a variety of colleges and departments are represented on the task force, although that was not a stated goal by Stokes. “It’s definitely a diverse group,”

Martens said. “It’s diverse in terms of — and I think this was probably important for [Stokes] to consider as well — gender, race, ethnicity, academic background. So when we look at the folks who are on the committee, there’s representation from a wide swath of campus.” The task force’s first report, when it releases to public, will provide insight into its plan and give a glimpse into the future of many of MU’s academic programs. “That perspective on where we need to go as an institution, what are our strengths, those sorts of things, we might get some ideas and perspectives that the faculty wouldn’t see or the administrators wouldn’t necessarily see,” Martens said. “We’re looking forward to those conversations.” Edited by Olivia Garrett ogarrett@themaneater.com

However, this new degree program differs from its predecessors in its approach to curriculum. The program is also likely to increase Mizzou Online enrollment, Chval said. “[The program] is all

evidence-based,” Lembke said. “It embeds cutting-edge practice. We are out doing the research.” The professors and faculty in this program teach their students evidence-based practices such as positive behavior intervention supports, which states that by teaching appropriate behavior, teachers can prevent inappropriate behavior in the future, according to a press release. the project stems from Jittapalapong’s dissertation work about 17 years ago. Interim Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine Carolyn Henry also helped Stich submit the grant application and provided facilities for him and his team to use for experiments. However, she said the real work is all attributed to Stich’s dedication. “This project is because of [Stich’s] patience,” Henry said. “All credit truly goes to him.” Stich had to reapply for the grant a number of times before he was finally awarded it. Henry confirmed that Stich had spent months on each application over several years. The total cost of the grant is split two different ways. The direct cost goes toward the project and the indirect cost is what the university uses for upkeep of labs and other bills. The direct cost is about $320,000, Stich said. The money goes really fast, he explained, and he’s a little concerned it won’t last for the next three years. The team has already had to buy new equipment to replace broken items and will have to pay for graduate student stipends and fully pay for the experiments they will be conducting. “[The money] goes fast; research is very expensive,” Stich said. “It’s amazing how quickly the expenses add up.” Henry said that a lot of investigators and researchers feel this way and assured that it would be enough to last the next three years. She said it is a “very reasonable budget.”

and Sammuel Shahzad, “that finishes it up.” Stitch said there has already been a lot of work done before them. The team uses information found from previous research done on ticks, the biology of ticks and the biology of tick-borne pathogens. “So this is really just another step toward the goal of being able to mitigate tick-borne diseases,” Stich said. Stich emphasized the seriousness of these pathogens. There are several tickborne diseases of cattle that heavily impact agriculture. The team is conducting research using anaplasmosis, a disease that can cause anemia, jaundice and even death in cattle. Anaplasmosis is one of the five major vector-borne diseases of cattle worldwide, Stich said. The research team will target the tick molecules that the pathogen relies on. Because of that, they hope they will be able to understand how to interfere with other pathogens as well. The project will consist of many experiments done multiple times to test how the pathogen responds. The experiments will involve ticks that the team will purchase from vendors and view with molecular and microscopic techniques. They will then allow the ticks to “feed” on cattle and study how the animals respond. The team wants to see how well the immune system of the cattle interferes with the pathogen from the tick. After they find out how to protect the cattle from the pathogen and tick,

they will identify what to target in that animal to make it healthy. Once that is identified, more tests will follow and, hopefully, a vaccine can be created. “It’s a lot of work; in some ways it’s too much work,” Stich said. “That’s why I have to have two graduate students working on it. And even with two hardworking grad students like these two, we might still need more help.” Hoffman said most of the day he and Shahzad are doing experiments and it’s their top priority right now. “Start early, end late,” Hoffman said, referring to his and Shahzad’s schedule. “That’s what research is all about.” Right now Hoffman is working on two-dimensional electrophoresis, meaning he’ll be able to look at what proteins in the tick will be targeted by the new response of the cattle. Shahzad is working on being able to identify the level of infection that a tick is affected with. Other professors have helped Stich with this project along the way, including associate professor of epidemiology and public health Patrick Pithua and professor of veterinary pathobiology Gayle Johnson. In addition, Stich has worked with Sathaporn Jittapalapong, who was one of Stich’s first graduate students years ago. Jittapalapong is now dean of veterinary technology and a professor at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand. “[Jittapalapong] is a good collaborator even though we’re thousands of miles apart and we don’t see each other very often,” Stich said. “We communicate by email several times a week.” Stich also said that

that I hadn’t really thought of,” Aguilar said. “It’s not only the publications, but he has these personal stories that illustrate the work that he’s done over the last 10 years.” Helen Young, a second-year PhD student and fellow SKiPP member, emphasized the passion Burns holds for their research. “It’s funny, sitting in [a] research team or anything really [with Burns],” Young said. “He’ll be sitting in class, and we’ll discuss like, ‘Oh, I have a question about this.’ And he’ll be like, ‘You know what? That would be a great research question. We should do a study on that.’” Burns expressed a desire to delve into the theoretical side of his work in future research. He cited his earlier work as a school psychologist as the

Again, Burns placed first, with 40 total articles and a total authorship score of 18.88. “We hired him as a superstar,” department chair T. Chris RileyTillman said. As department chair for the educational, school & counseling psychology department, RileyTillman has worked closely with

Burns for the past four years. “There are rankings back from 2005 that put him as the most published researcher in school psychology,” Riley-Tillman said. “When we hired him, we hired somebody who, in our field, was viewed as one of the top, if not the top, overall researcher.” Lisa Aguilar is a fifth-year PhD student who has worked with Burns through SKiPP. She explained that Burns encourages everyone on the team to get involved with writing and publishing. Although initially interested in behavioral psychology, she switched her focus to interventions after beginning work with him. “As a graduate student that didn’t really know what I was doing, he’s amazing because he steered me in the direction [of academic interventions]

source of his interest in interventions. While using different academic interventions with different students, he was always intrigued by why some succeeded and some didn’t. His start as a school psychologist is also what pushes him to do research that will help classrooms across the country. “I want to help [teachers] by doing the study that will help them with the kid they struggle with the most,” Burns said. “That’s the kid I’m really passionate about. The kid that no one knows what the heck to do with. Strange vibes and a murder mystery

Driving down Highway 124 on my way to Victorian Country Inn to participate in an eclipse-themed murdermystery dinner party, the narrow road and midMissouri bumps-called-hills immediately put me in a nostalgic mood. Missouri, whether fundamentally or undeservedly, can have the reputation of being, well, boring. Even in supposed entertainment hotspots like downtown Columbia, the same handful of bars, restaurants and stores seem to be the most explored. Hoping to break from the familiar monotony, I expanded my scope. At first glance, Victorian Country Inn, located in Hallsville, looks like many bed-and-breakfasts. It has a porch with a beautiful view, a rustic guest house and a quaint pond coupled with the sprinkling sounds of a stone fountain. Inside, though, is a subtly different story. Each room within the Victorianstyle home is its own little container of history, whether that be local, international or personal to the owners, Barbara and Ray Spencer. “Here, history is intertwist with mystery,” Barbara Spencer said while whirling around the numerous knicknacks and antique furnishings around the surprisingly homey living room and parlor. During Spencer’s nearly hour-long tour, she rarely stopped to catch her breath. Each possession around the inn contained its own entire history that Spencer needed to tell. Some histories were undoubtedly true, like fanciful guns from her husband’s family. Though, others were admittedly dubious, like a possibly historic settee or knicknacks graced by Baby Face Nelson’s presence when he passed through Missouri.

The front dining room is a combination of classic Victorian era furniture, though just to the left the living room has Western themes mixed in. After passing through the open floor plan, wood paneling covers the rustic kitchen. On the other side of a swinging gate with an “Employees Only” sign, Spencer’s husband starts preparing the gourmet, yet homecooked,

enough to be grandparents. After some themed pictures and early into our dinner together, our group tread awkwardly through conversation. Everyone seemed to be desperately trying to find any common points of interest. In hopes of expanding conversations, we all began dipping our toes into the investigation before us by opening up the dense packet of clues Spencer had

this bizarre mystery, guests would occasionally try to begin suggesting early judgements and predictions. I placed my bets on Bob, the sketchy “bugophobe,” though the 14 paragraphs describing the characters made it hard for anyone else at the table to even begin to sympathize with my suspicions. Eventually, our salads came out. After a cringeworthy group effort

pushed each other further into character as detectives and secretaries. The surreality of walking into a room behind a hidden bookshelf to inspect our suspects’ clues just made sense. Taking an ATV ride through a pitch-black field to discover the remains of a murder surrounded by “alien” glow sticks, despite the naivete, was ominous.

All over the walls and in overstuffed cabinets are group photos of past murder-mystery dinner guests. Impressively, Spencer recalled exciting tidbits of each group, as if they had just passed through her inn. Apparently, this particular murder-mystery dinner I had wandered into was different from her typical dinners. First, she used a new, rougharound-the-edges script, this one relevantly eclipse themed. Second, 20 people tend to show up to these dinners, but that night there were only five. The other four guests were two couples: one around their mid-20s, the second old

prepared. Typical murder-mystery parties assign characters to the guests, who then act out certain events and key lines which work as clues. So as someone attending the party, guests would experience the mystery firsthand. Tonight’s party was different. Instead, the mystery has unfolded days before — actually the night of the solar eclipse. Based off of real Canadian astronomers who had rented out the inn to see totality, Spencer’s script fictionalized three of their disappearances and charged us to discover what had happened. While we read about the over a dozen characters in

to pass some fancy crackers around the table, it seemed like our investigative team’s uncomfortable dynamic was set in stone. But then, miraculously, something cracked. Conversation lightened up. We started telling jokes, and not light, icebreaker ones. We told weirdly sincere jokes. A man teaching a woman how to use his telescope became something much, much more, and hilarious tales of old ladies buying hemorrhoid cream seemed totally natural. By the time we had finished dinner and began our guided investigation through Spencer’s estate, we developed inside jokes and

At the end of the night, as we talked over theories with the ever-excited Spencer, it was hard to imagine that we had only known each other a handful of hours. Over the candlelight and clink of wine glasses from the table, I looked into the other room at the wooden antiques covering the walls. As expected, the night had been weird and endearingly innocent. Stay on top of your semester with these study tips

Welcome to week three of the 2017 fall semester! Whether you already feel as though you have been annihilated by a ton of bricks or you are slaying the student game, don’t underestimate critical study tips and resources. Consequently, the workload is here to stay, and by early planning, reinforcing and seeking the help you need, the semester will feel far more manageable, and maybe you will be inspired to organize your school life instead of your Netflix queue. Time management with a planner Effective weekly planning can help alleviate the panic felt when flipping through a semester’s syllabi. For some students, a minimalistic, month-by-month planner fulfills their needs. For others, a regimented, hour-by-hour one is fitting (The Mizzou Store offers a wide variety). Regardless of the planner type, it is imperative to make scheduling a priority. To start getting in the planner habit, set aside 30 minutes on the same day each week. Begin by boldly identifying quizzes, exams and paper due dates (excessive exclamation points suggested). Next, distinctly fill in additional organization meetings, sports practices, appointments, etc. (color-

coding is your friend). Lastly, plug in assigned homework and readings by placing check mark boxes next to the assignment so you can tick off your progress. Show up for class “Go to class,” academic adviser Mackenzie Ewing said. It seems like a no-brainer, but with the promise of more sleep and a newfound lack of attendance policy, it may be easy to get into the mindset that missing class is excusable behavior. If you value a stable GPA and potential letters of recommendation or on the off chance that you love to learn, give yourself the opportunity to succeed. Come to class prepared. Complete assigned readings before class. Put away your phone during lecture. Take handwritten notes. Ask questions. Attend discussions and study sessions. Then turn around and do it all again for your next class. Perhaps you are the punctual, first-row student in every class but are still experiencing difficulty grasping foreign concepts. Well, say hello to the Student Success Center. Ewing recommends the Study Plan Consultant program to all students, which helps students with time management, utilization of resources and tracking their grades. It is easy to make the initial, hour-long appointment online through MU Connect by searching “Study Plan” or in person at the SSC front desk. Conveniently enough, the SSC front desk also has master schedules for when they hold help sessions. These sessions

range from math and writing to foreign language and music theory. Drop in during the allotted dates and times to get free assistance for the subjects troubling you. Senior journalism student and SSC ambassador Layne Silverman suggests the Career Center (in the basement of the SSC) to all students. “The Career Center is an amazing resource,” Silverman said. “They help with resumes, internship and job searches. Get there as a freshman.” Whether you are a freshman, senior or grad student, there is an expansive amount of MU student resources, and the earlier you use them, the better. Take handwritten notes … and yes, re-write them We have all already heard the advice — handwrite your class notes! According to NPR, studies show that laptop notetakers remember straightforward facts just as well as handwritten notetakers, but when it comes to applying concepts, laptop enthusiasts greatly underperform compared to their penpreferring peers. While typists usually have increased quantity of their notes, hand writers get the opportunity to assess quality of their notes, which forces the brain to summarize and prioritize incoming information. The single drawback when taking handwritten notes is that information can look disorganized. To avoid confusion and to reinforce concepts from lecture, rewrite and reconstruct your

notes. Restructure notes by capitalizing chapter names, bolding headers, underlining definitions, color coding and starring pertinent points. The more organized your notes are, the easier you can simplify and conceptualize information. If you effectively re-write your notes, these notes can become study guides for future exams. Use your phone the right way Download MU- and studyrelated apps and turn on those notifications! Canvas: A fully functioning app version of the online Canvas site. GoMizzou: Includes a drop-down list of modules including campus

It is tradition for women in the northern Philippines to tattoo their young daughters. They believe it enhances their beauty and allows their body to tell a unique story. At the age of 15, tattoo artist Felix Garcia repped blue hair when she got her first “straight edge” tattoo. “My decoration started as a way to say I’m a part of this culture and this group, and I want everyone to know about it,” Garcia said. “I still remember walking around the mall at 15 with people staring at me because of my hair and tattoos. People were tripping that my mom let me do that. So that’s what I began to use it for. I felt more stoked to express myself this way.” The punk rock scene of Los Angeles and Las Vegas drew Garcia into a culture she would never untangle herself from. Years later, Garcia would be back in Vegas fighting for an apprenticeship at a local tattoo shop, one similar to where she works now at Tattoo You in Columbia. But at that time, the rebellious,

unapologetic community of teens screaming on stages is where Garcia established herself free of judgement and was exposed to the art of not giving a damn. Garcia thrived in the punk community because of its authenticity and art-oriented vibe, but when she decided to become a tattooer at the age of 24, she was in uncharted territory. “I basically had to take everything I knew about art and throw it in the garbage because it’s not at all the same,” Garcia said. Tattooing is a very unique form of art because it generally lacks the acceptance of subjectivity. Basically anyone can tell if a permanent piece of ink is good or bad, so the fundamentals of the practice are crucial to master. There isn’t a formal schooling process for tattooing, so artists rely on shadowing other tattooers in their shops, as well as painting and drawing frequently. “To get into the tattoo community, you can’t just come in and say, ‘Hey, I want to be a tattooer; here’s my book,’” Garcia said. “You have to prove you want it in a lot of ways. They also teach you how to have grit and stand your ground. You have to be able to defend yourself. That’s what they’re prepping you for when they’re cleaning their tubes and talking s---. It’s like the military where they want to break you down and build you back up to make you a better artist mentally.”

Whether giving or receiving, this community demands toughness and confidence because the reward is worth the pain. The numbers of Americans with tattoos is growing by the year. With three out of 10 Americans having a tattoo in 2016, according to a The Harris Poll study, the community is growing faster than it ever has in history. Along with the numbers, America’s perception of tattoo culture is also changing. From military men to soccer moms, now more than ever people are inducting themselves into the community by committing to a permanent form of expression. Garcia feels strongly about how inclusive this community is evolving to be. “We sometimes do memorial tattoos,” Garcia said. “Families are coming in; they’ve just lost somebody and before they have the wake or funeral they’re getting this person memorialized on their body. I feel so honored to be a part of that. It’s so much respect I gain from other people and myself, letting me be a part of their family in that way. It reminds me this is why I’m doing this. Sometimes they’re grandparents age and sometimes it’s a 13-year-old kid who committed suicide. It’s like, dude this is real; this is happening.” Whether it’s for decoration or symbolism, getting a tattoo is an intimate and powerful experience for both artist and client. Regardless of the reason, tattoos are unique because they are a commitment to

art. They demand self-confidence because they aren’t going away. People make the choice to get what they love and have to own it. Strength often comes from the willingness to be vulnerable and wear your heart, or ink, on your sleeve. This element of tattooing makes the art unique to other forms of self-expression. So, when clients come to Garcia for a cover-up, she complies but often aims to redirect their mentality. “We do quite a lot of cover-ups, and sometimes the tattoos that people are trying to cover up are cool, and I always tell them whether you like it or not, this will always take you back to a time in your life,” Garcia said. “Just like songs or smells hold memories, I can look back at some of my own tattoos and remember exactly where I was state of mind: where I was living, who I was hanging out with, etc. It’s cool to have something on your body that you can look down at and remember.” Tattooing is the art of impenitence. It’s allowing others to see who you are without apologizing for it. Akin to punk rockers screaming on a stage, tattooing is going through pain and in return, owning it. Taylor Swift returns with fiery new single ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ The pop superstar takes her musical style darker than ever. ASHLEY DORF

Here lies Taylor Swift, in her grave, away from the public eye that killed her off. Her victim playing is over. Her career is just … dead. At least that’s what she wants you to think. Swift’s highly anticipated single “Look What You Made Me Do” was released on Aug. 24, almost three full years since her last release, 1989. “Look” serves as the lead single to Swift’s upcoming sixth album Reputation. Fans, or Swifties, knew a new cycle of music was upon them as Swift’s social media accounts went blank, then displayed cryptic, futuristic videos of

a snake, a label given to Swift through her conflicts with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. “Look” references past Swift songs, beginning with a twisted, repeated sequence that sounds like the evil twin of Swift’s hit “Love Story.” But that’s about it with similarities. Following the hauntingly soft introduction, a heavy synth pop beat kicks in as Swift throws some harsh words at her enemies: “I don’t like your little games.” In the pre-chorus, Swift explains how she rebounds from criticism: “But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time.” This line is perhaps the most reminiscent of Swift’s past work. It is a line with lyrical fluency and relatability to the audience, two points that qualified Swift as an exquisite singer-songwriter in the first place. The line reads as if it came straight from the page

of a journal. The chorus clearly shows Swift’s change in artistic direction. She sarcastically talk-sings, “Look what you made me do,” with various background shouts to complement. The familiarity of the chorus is intentional. Swift gives songwriting credits to members of ‘90s one-hit wonder Right S a i d Fred for the resemblance to their 1991 smash “I’m Too Sexy.” The band praised Taylor on Twitter and in a Yahoo! interview for her use of the song and how it introduced “Sexy” to a whole new generation. The interpolation of “Sexy” is Swift’s clever way to ease listeners into her new, darker style. “Look” repeatedly mentions the “death” that the media and public assigned to Swift’s name. During the bridge, Swift sings that the “old Taylor can’t come to the

phone right now,” because she’s “dead” and mentions how she is able to weather intense criticism. Swift has not only been called out for her interactions with celebrities like West, Kardashian and Katy Perry but also for her social media silence on issues like feminism. Although “Look” has received relatively mixed reviews from critics, fans have

Justin Bieber and Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito.” The video received a positive response for its significant symbolism and final moments in which various Swifts from different eras argue with each other. Yet the critics overlook the most important part of the song: It is laced with satire. By no means is Swift saying she hates the world or men or the media. She’s cleverly giving it a taste of its own medicine. It is also important to note that “Look” is not a musical or lyrical masterpiece. It is evident, however, that Swift no longer has interest in the public’s opinion, whether about her personal life or her music. Swift released a more traditional song called “...Ready For It?” less than ten days later. It carries a modern, pop feel that resembles her 2014 hit, “Bad Blood.” However, “Look” opens up many possibilities for Swift to further develop her darker style with more substantial lyrical content on Reputation, which drops Nov. 10. Are you ready to discuss mental health?

Annie Jennemann is a freshman journalism and English major who writes about politics for The Maneater. As a person who has mental illnesses, I’m ready for the world to understand what it means to have one. The discussion about mental health has changed drastically over time, from the 1950s and 1960s, when the mentally ill were placed in asylums and hospitals and were labeled as “crazy,” to present day, in which people who suffer with mental illness fall into the general population, often forgotten and ignored. Mental health has become prevalent in society, with about 26.2 percent of adults in America suffering from a mental illness in a given year, and people tend to forget that these illnesses exist and do not understand what they are. The discussion about mental health is quiet, as people are aware but not fully educated. The way to ensure mental health can be taken as a serious illness is to educate people. Although it’s difficult to make every person aware of this topic, it’s a start to changing the way people with mental illnesses are viewed in society. When I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety my sophomore year of high

school, my father did not quite understand the effects these illnesses would have on me. It affected my schoolwork and the way I interacted with people. With depression, some days I just wanted to lay in bed and not focus on what was going on in my life. School was full of anxiety attacks and a constant need to leave the classroom to calm down. Many days I would sit in the bathroom calling my father, begging him to let me come home because of all the symptoms, mental and physical. It ended up being seen as an excuse to not attend school, resulting in arguments and lectures about how school is the most important thing to focus on. It’s a completely rational argument, but to be educated about mental health is the beginning of understanding how to treat people with these kinds of illnesses. Many people hear the phrase “mental illness” and their mind automatically jumps to depression and anxiety. They are two of the most common mental illnesses diagnosed in America, with about 18.1 percent of the population being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and about 6.7 percent diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Of these two disorders, multiple types of illnesses fall under their umbrellas. Major depressive disorder, the more well-known depressive disorder, includes symptoms such as fatigue, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, insomnia, overeating/ appetite loss, aches and pains and thoughts of suicide. Many are aware of

clinical depression, but there are many more types of disorders with different symptoms. Like depression, there are many different types of anxiety disorders, the most common being generalized anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder is an illness that causes a person to worry about things with no obvious or rational reason to worry. It affects the mind but also has physical symptoms. The symptoms include persistent worry, excessive worrying, irritability, headaches, sweating, nausea, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, trembling and insomnia. People who struggle with generalized anxiety disorder have difficulty with everyday life.

My symptoms are different from the many others in America who have the same illnesses. Not every symptom is present, and symptoms are not present all the time. A person diagnosed with depression or anxiety can walk down the street and nobody would be able to tell from a glance that they are struggling. A key addition to the discussion on depression and anxiety is that they may

not be visible, but they are health problems that affect a person’s everyday life. These disorders make it difficult to function on a day-to-day basis. After learning more about anxiety and depression, ask yourself one question: Are you afraid of the mental health discussion? Mental health disorders are an epidemic in society, but we choose to not acknowledge their multiple forms. It is important to be educated on the topic in order to be aware of what the people around you could be dealing with. Mental illnesses are not written on the forehead of a person, but they are still health issues. Over time, my father began to understand my mental health and knew how to handle it. My father is one of the most understanding people in my life and I forever respect his ability to become educated and understand how depression and anxiety affect my life. With that understanding, I began to know how to handle my illnesses. They aren’t cured, but now I know how to stabilize myself and focus on important things such as schoolwork and developing as a person. Without my father’s understanding, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Discuss this topic with others. Help educate them on what to do and what not to do around people you may not know. If you know anyone who shows signs of any of these illnesses, reach out and help that person get the help they need. The discussion about mental health is quiet, but people who are mentally ill can be silent.

Apple ripped off consumers when it eliminated the headphone jack The unwanted move brought no benefits. SOLOMON DAVIS

Solomon Davis is a sophomore journalism major who writes about technology for The Maneater. In 2016, Apple helped jumpstart a trend in mobile electronics: removing the headphone jack from devices. What we know as the headphone jack originated in the 19th century with its first use by telephone operators working at switchboards, and except for shrinking in size, the jack has remained the same. Apple has become known as a pioneer in consumer electronics by making bold statements that set the trends for its competitors. It was the first company to stop including a CD drive and an Ethernet port on laptops. For Apple, such moves come down

to progress. “Some people have asked why we would remove the analog headphone jack from the iPhone,” Apple Marketing Chief Phil Schiller said to The Verge. “It really comes down to one word: courage. The courage to move on to do something new that betters all of us.” In the wake of Apple’s announcement that it was ditching the headphone jack in the iPhone 7, it was no surprise that consumers had some complaints, as the last time the company made a change to their ports left many consumers upset. This time around there was even a petition to get Apple to reconsider killing off the headphone jack. The company cited sound quality, freeing up device space for waterproofing and battery life, among other things, to justify the most recent change, but consumers clearly get the short end of the stick while Apple continues to increase its profits. In 2014, just two years before the announcement that the iPhone 7 would not have a headphone jack, Apple acquired Beats Electronics. According to

numbers released by market research company The NPD Group, Beats brings in more revenue than its next three competitors and holds a quarter of the Bluetooth headphone market. Even though Bluetooth headphones only accounted for 17 percent of headphone units sold in the U.S. last year, they accounted for 54 percent of dollars spent in the headphone market. Now that Apple owns a popular Bluetooth headphone manufacturer, it is poised to reap the rewards. The move to eliminate the headphone jack would either steer consumers toward Bluetooth headphones or they would find themselves buying headphones that are lightning port compatible. But, every company that makes a pair of lightning headphones must first be licensed by Apple. There is speculation that Apple charges third-party manufacturers a flat licensing fee, but no data is available due to Apple’s secretive nature. The only real justification for removing the headphone jack is if the customer benefitted

greatly. With the iPhone 7, consumers got waterproofing, but plenty of manufacturers have added waterproofing without the loss of the headphone jack. If a device was to pack in 4K screens and all-day battery life but remove the headphone jack, a lot of consumers would happily oblige. But the move away from “analog” to digital is one that consumers did not ask for and do not reap the benefits of. Consumers hoping that the upcoming iPhone 8 would bring an end to the “dongle” and a return to a physical headphone jack should stop waiting because

that will never happen. As we approach the newest launch of devices this fall and spring, consumers must keep in mind that Apple is not the only manufacturer deciding to remove the headphone jack in their devices, but they serve as an indicator of market trends. And if Apple does it, then others are sure to follow. The only hope lays in the handful of manufacturers like Samsung who are resisting the trend and sticking with the headphone jack like the consumer wants.

He opened with a joke about his non-existent hair, then touched on how he was impressed with the record-setting performance of starting quarterback Drew Lock. After, he discussed the improvement he had seen from his skill players over the offseason and said that it was important to see it carry over into actual games. Finally, Odom got to the question

that everyone had on their minds: the defense. While Saturday saw Drew Lock and Missouri’s offense set three school records with its historic production, the accomplishments were ultimately dwarfed by the defense’s anemic performance in the first half. No amount of discussion of the offense’s success could overshadow the sheer facts. In the first half of Saturday’s contest, missed tackles and blown coverages were a theme

as Missouri’s defense allowed 380 total yards of offense, 230 of which came through the air, while allowing 35 points to a Missouri State offense that finished last in scoring offense in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. Countdown to Wrestling Part one: A guide for beginners It’s no secret that Mizzou has become a wrestling powerhouse. The Tigers have consistently put out some of the best teams and individual competitors in the sport in recent years, dominating the Mid-American

Conference every year since joining for the 2013 season. But wrestling can be a hard sport to understand at times. Follow The Maneater’s “Countdown to Wrestling” series for features, player and coach profiles and even explanations for new wrestling fans in the months leading up to the new season. Raise your hand if you feel like you are not quite an expert yet when it comes to the ins and outs of wrestling. That’s okay — our hands are raised, too. Wrestling can be complicated. The first match is not typically until late October or early November, so there is plenty of time to get the basics down in preparation for

Mizzou wrestling’s first match. For the first installment, we’ll just go over the basics. Make sure to check back next week for a guide on matches and how to score points. How big is a typical wrestling team? How many athletes wrestle for each match? There are 36 athletes on the Mizzou roster, but only one athlete per weight class wrestles per meet. For open meets, more wrestlers compete. There are 10 weight classes, ranging from the 125-pound weight class to heavyweights, which is 197 pounds and above. Why is Mizzou wrestling in the MAC and not in the Southeastern Conference like the rest of Mizzou

sports? Mizzou wrestled in the Big 12 Conference up until the end of the 2012 season, winning the Big 12 Championship on March 3, 2012. With the university’s move to the SEC, wrestling was put in an interesting situation — wrestling is not an SEC sport. The Tigers joined the MAC for the 2013 season and have won the conference every year since. What is the difference between an individual win and a team win? Each wrestling match within a meet gets a decision. An athlete’s personal victory counts for points toward the team’s total. The team

“Setting is hard, but they handle it like a boss, and lead by example,” Fuentes said. “I really admire Ali and the kind of teammate she is, because when she messes up she shakes it off and is really positive.” Since the beginning of the summer, Fuentes and Hollingsworth have been with the team getting adjusted to their new lifestyle. After the Tigers’ stellar 2016 season, the two arrived at MU excited to compete in black and gold jerseys. Now, they’re ready to be key contributors on a team that has a conference championship to defend. “I’m looking forward to learning more about the sport and chasing an SEC title,” Hollingsworth said. in the Tiger family. “The other players are so supportive,” Fuentes said. “I remember practicing with them on a visit and thinking I did really bad because I kept messing up, but they were still really supportive of me.” Returning players have made a big impact on the freshmen, giving them the opportunity to learn more each day by practicing alongside them. At the net, Hollingsworth is getting lots of help from veteran redshirt seniors Kira Larson and Melanie Crow. “They’re always trying to motivate the team,” Hollingsworth said. “They go hard, and that is how it should be. They are great inspirations.” For running the offense, Fuentes looks up to the senior setters, Courtney Eckenrode and Ali Kreklow.

and took a lot of discipline,” Hollingsworth said. “You have to make a lot of sacrifices.” Her leadership role and success in Puerto Rico made her a valuable recruit for Missouri. “She possesses a rare combination of size, skill and athleticism that makes her one of the top players in the Class of 2017,” Kreklow said in a press release. “Her success at the international junior level with the Puerto Rican U20 team speaks to her level of play, and I’m confident that she will transition quickly to collegiate volleyball.” The atmosphere of Columbia and a new volleyball program may have taken some getting used to for Fuentes and Hollingsworth, but the players and coaches have helped to make sure that they feel like they belong

Imagine traveling over 2,000 miles from home, adjusting to an unfamiliar environment and surrounding yourself with all new coaches and teammates. For two University of Missouri volleyball freshmen this fall, Columbia is serving as a new home away from home. For Andrea Fuentes and Dariana Hollingsworth, it was a big step in their volleyball careers to leave their homes and families in Puerto Rico and make their way to MU to play for the Tigers. “I miss my family a lot, but it’s a good experience for growth,” Fuentes said. For Fuentes, MU has become more than just a new place to stay; it is a stellar combination of academic and athletic resources that she could not pass up. “I was looking for a good academic school, and I wanted to expand my horizons,” Fuentes said. “I knew that I could have the best of both worlds with the program and academics, and that there is no way to fail with all of the resources they offered.” Fuentes selected Missouri over other big Division I programs including Notre Dame and Arkansas. “After I visited Mizzou, I canceled the trips to all of the other schools; I knew it was where I wanted to be,” Fuentes said. Hollingsworth followed her gut knowing MU had a strong program she wanted to be a part of. “Mizzou was the only school that spoke to me, and it gave me a vibe that I really liked,” Hollingsworth said. Like Fuentes, Hollingsworth chose Mizzou over other volleyball powerhouse schools like Nebraska, Iowa State and Kansas. The girls achieved accolades back home before embarking on their journey of playing collegiate volleyball. One major accomplishment the two share is the

experience of playing at the junior international level for the U20 Puerto Rican national team. Fuentes had competed on the Puerto Rican national team for quite some time. She played with the U18 National Team as a setter from 2013 to 2015. “I started playing for the national team when I was 15 until I turned 18,” Fuentes said. “It really shaped me and help me grow as a player. It was awesome; I had my best experiences there, and it’s not something you get the opportunity to do often.” Later, competing for the U20 national team, she earned the role of captain and a bronze medal with the team in the AAU International Division. “My coaches told me that I needed to be a leader,” Fuentes said. “The opportunity of being a captain came along and it was hard. I had to focus on it like a job. It really helped my game and me become less shy.” On top of the bronze medal and captain selection, Fuentes was awarded “Best Setter” at the 2016 NORCECA Championship with the National Team. Her accomplishments caught the attention of Mizzou head volleyball coach Wayne Kreklow. “The fact that she was named the captain of the U20 Puerto Rican National Volleyball Team at this past summer’s NORCECA Tournament speaks volumes about her talent as a player and her leadership skills,” Kreklow said in a press release. Hollingsworth played on the U20 National Team and was given the opportunity to play the team captain role for the NORCECA Pan-American Cup, where she helped her team reach fourth place. “I was chosen because I was the oldest and I had the most experience,” Hollingsworth said. “Being a captain was new, not the same as being one for my high school. I had to step up.” Previously, Hollingsworth competed with the U18 Puerto Rican National Team at the 2015 NORCECA championship, and at the NORCECA Championship in 2016 she was given “Best Scorer” honors. “It was an honor to be there, but it was very strict

the changes from last year weren’t made clear. “They didn’t make it clear to the students that we needed a clear bag,” sophomore Claire Cook said. “I had to walk what felt like six miles all the way back to my car because I had my purse. I have no qualms with them just searching it.” In March, Mizzou Athletics announced the changes through a release on its website.

In addition, Missouri's official student section, Tiger’s Lair, was notified of the policy at its annual preseason orientation. The group held a clear bag giveaway for students during Saturday's game. Missouri will host seven home games this season, including one for each Saturday in September. Amid the action that surrounded Missouri football’s 72-43 win over Missouri State on Saturday, one new development went rather overlooked — the first game with Memorial Stadium’s clear bag policy. Starting this season, the Southeastern Conference,

including Missouri, is implementing a clear bag policy for all stadiums. Fans are not permitted to bring in any non-transparent bags, as well as any bag larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. Last season, fans were permitted to bring in larger bags such as purses. Drew Lock named SEC Offensive Player of the Week The junior quarterback set school records for passing yards and touchdowns against Missouri State on Saturday. GARRETT JONES

On Tuesday, the Southeastern Conference named Missouri quarterback Drew Lock its Offensive Player of the Week after his recordsetting performance in Saturday’s game against Missouri State. The honor comes just two days after the Walter Camp Foundation named the junior the FBS Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week. On Saturday, Lock torched the Missouri State defense, setting school single-game records with 521 yards

and seven touchdowns. For the Lee’s Summit, Missouri, native, breaking the school’s passing records was a true honor. “It’s gonna take a while to process,” Lock said after the game. “It’s amazing to think about, considering those records were held by guys I grew up idolizing.” Lock has shown steady improvement year by year, but in Saturday’s opener, he showed an elevated sense of poise and game control, spreading the ball all over the field and throwing touchdowns to five different receivers. Lock will have a chance to both validate and improve on those numbers this Saturday when the Tigers host the South Carolina Gamecocks at Memorial Stadium. Missouri State’s own 11-yard line, Bears quarterback Peyton Huslig hit wide receiver Malik Earl on a slant route 18 yards down the field. Earl shook off two Missouri defenders in quick succession and turned up-field with only blockers and open field ahead of him as he strolled into the end zone for an 89-yard score. Despite his calm demeanor at the podium, Odom did not sugarcoat the way the defense performed in the first half. He held himself accountable, stating that all the fingers pointed back to him. “In the first half, I was trying to do a little too much, and they got us on

some alignments early on,” Odom said. To Missouri’s credit, the Tigers recouped in the second half, limiting the Bears to just 112 yards on offense and a single score after halftime as the team found more success in pass coverage. They allowed 123 passing yards, and in rushing the passer, disrupted Huslig’s game with two sacks and a number of hurries. Redshirt junior Kaleb Prewett felt that the difference for the Tigers in the second half came down to returning to the basics and calming down. After the game, Prewett spoke on the idea that the young and inexperienced defense may have been trying to do too much early on. “I think a lot of guys’ eyes were probably all over the place early,” Prewett said. “I feel like once guys’ eyes started calming down and reading

the cues, that’s when things started going our way.” Odom expressed a particular concern with his team’s tackling, a facet of the game where Missouri State exposed the Tigers in the first half. On the Bears’ three longest touchdowns, the 89-yarder, along with 75-yard and 34-yard rushing touchdowns, the Tigers were unable to wrap up runners. “After what we had shown in fall camp, we’d done a lot of tackling drills,” Odom said. “I thought we were going to get a bit more carryover with that going into game one.” While reinforcing his concerns, Odom remained confident about the state of the defense and his staff’s ability to make the necessary changes needed to improve. Even when pressed about how the defense might fare against stiffer competition such as

South Carolina, whom the Tigers face next Saturday, the Tigers’ head coach remained certain. “We gotta get fixed on that side [of the defense], and I’m pretty confident that that’s going to happen,” Odom said. With an important conference test against South Carolina days away, the time for improvement is small, and the margin for error even smaller. Missteps that the Tigers got away with against Missouri State will not fly against the Gamecocks, and Odom knows that. Still, he has faith in his defense. “I look forward to going back to work, and I like the progress and the jump that we’re gonna make from week one to week two,” Odom said. Because of this, it is possible for an individual to win his match but for the team to still lose the overall meet. This is similar to track and field; a runner can win his or her race, but that does not necessarily translate to the team winning the meet. How long is an individual wrestling match? Individual wrestling matches have the potential to last for three periods. The first period is three minutes, with the second and third each lasting for two minutes. A decision can be reached in any of the first three periods, so there is a chance the match could take less than three minutes if the it is ended by a fall, technical fall, default or disqualification. If there is still no decision by the end of the first three periods, there is a one-minute overtime period. How many individual matches make up a dual meet? A dual meet is similar to a game for another sport; it is one school against another. An open meet is more like a tournament. It can involve multiple schools and usually

has more wrestlers in each weight class. For a dual meet, there will be a match between each wrestling class for a total of 10 matches. When and where are meets? While the 2017-18 wrestling schedule has not been released yet, the regular season typically starts in late October or early November
