AUTUMN 2016
Welcome to BREEZE Autumn edition T
The single largest piece of feedback we receive on how to improve the airport is to increase the number of destinations served, and therefore it gives me great pleasure to confirm that both Munich and Lyon are now being served year round by Flybe, whilst Ibiza will be served by Thomson Holidays for summer 2017. These routes build upon our exciting new routes previously announced this year with bmi regional, KLM, Aer Lingus and Volotea.

This year the Runway Run raised funds for Where There’s a Will, a local Southampton charity which supports patients, as well as their family and friends, whilst they are on the General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) at Southampton General Hospital. So far the run has raised £8,000 with more donations still to come in!

Staff at the airport who travel the extra mile At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping to make our passenger’s journey as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through Awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.
March - Valerie and Ben - Flybe Valarie and Ben recently received fantastic feedback regarding the service they provided to a nervous passenger: “Absolutely the best care I have received from flight crew. Kind and professional. She noticed my nervousness at flying and went out of her way to make me feel secure. This has been one of the absolute best flight experiences I have ever had … Valerie and Ben are an absolute credit to the airline.” Well done to Valerie and Ben!

April – Lauren Cashman – Flybe When a passenger became ill on a flight in April, Lauren ensured that she was taken care of until the flight landed at Southampton and the ambulance had arrived and confirmed she was okay. Lauren was still worried about the passenger having to get a train on her own so went with her on the journey to ensure that she reached her friend in Winchester okay. Fantastic work Lauren!
May – Paul Abbott Even though it was his sons 1st birthday and he was on holiday, Paul volunteered to come in on his day off and cover a shift that was short staffed. Thank you Paul for your never-ending enthusiasm and dedication to customer service and we hope your son didn’t miss you too much on his big day!

Walk the floor with... Are you interested to know what happens behind the scenes of your favourite airport? We asked Jeremy Edmunds, Airport Duty Manager, to share with us a typical day in his job and some inside stories about airport operations. NAME: Jeremy Edmunds JOB: Airport Duty Manager (ADM) What does your day-to-day job involve? I work with all the departments within the airport to ensure great customer experience and driving performance whilst maintaining compliance. Basically, I solve the problems that can’t be predicted or aren’t in contingency plans. If the team don’t know the answer, then the answer is to call the ADM! What is your favourite part of being an Airport Duty Manager? The variety…no two days are the same. What do you love about working at Southampton Airport (SOU)? There is no better feeling than knowing our customers have had a great experience through the airport. This means the day has been a success.
What made you decide to become an ADM? I love problem solving. As an ADM you need to be well versed in all the rules and regulations that surround us, but also know how to flex these to achieve our goals. What is your favourite destination from SOU? I have a few. I went on my mini honeymoon in Dublin, my father lives in Newcastle, I ran the marathon in Amsterdam and I go golfing in Faro. I’m also looking forward to trying the new connections with KLM via Amsterdam. Weirdest ADM experience? Being called to the baggage reclaim as a squirrel was running around it…it was like a hamster on a wheel! Strangest thing a passenger has asked you? Kate Winslet asked me to fit her child seat.
If you weren't an ADM what would you do? Probably work in hospitality and corporate events. Most famous person you have met whilst at work at SOU? I’ve met a lot including sportmen Paul McGinley and Graeme Souness but the most fascinating person has to be Lawrie McMenemy. We chatted for about an hour about being Saints manager, Chairman of Special Olympics UK and meeting Muhammad Ali. Favourite aircraft? I liked the BAE 146’s that used to operate from SOU and loved the Vulcan on the rare occasion it used to fly past (not so quietly!). But my all-time favourite would have to be the Spitfire especially as I was lucky enough to sit in one. What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? Spending time with my wonderful family (and playing golf!!).

To Tip or not to Tip. That is the question... Travelling for business invariably involves using services ranging from; dining out, to using a chauffeur or taxi service, or interacting with bar staff and/or hotel concierges. The Western culture is socially-accustomed to leaving a tip alongside the basic price of such a service. Depending on the location, this could range from as little as 3% of the bill in Croatia, to as much as 15-20% as in the United States. Some countries such as Iceland and Denmark do not expect a tip at all - often including a standard ‘service charge’ into their pricing; while in the Far East, staff in South Korea and Japan find tipping an inappropriate, offensive behaviour. Tipping is definitely a grey area in terms of etiquette but thankfully there are apps that can assist. Globe Tipping, Tipping Bird and Tip Check all do exactly what they say on the tin; calculating the appropriate gratuity according to your location and the cost of the service itself, ensuring you adhere to social etiquette every time.
But what’s the etiquette about leaving a gratuity on expenses while on a business trip? While few will deny that appropriate tipping is a custom everyone should partake in, especially when representing the company
abroad or at a lunch with a potential new client or supplier, there is a big grey area on how to manage tipping expenses. Some organisations might argue it is a personal choice to tip and thus should not be at the expense of the company, while most simply wouldn’t question it at all. Then there are potential issues as to whether the tip was made in cash and consequently has no auditable receipt. What happens then?
Without further ado, here’s the Amity Travel Management best practice tips on tipping: 1.
2.
3.
Ensure your company travel policy reflects the organisation’s stance on leaving a gratuity, with particular focus on which services your travellers are able to tip for and by how much. Detail the exact expense process by which your travellers can be reimbursed for any gratuities left on the trip. Encourage your travellers to make all payments by card, as statements can be supplied as proof during the expense process. Cash tips are hard to trace and many would argue that without an auditable trail there’ll be no reimbursement. Considering that a meal in the U.S. for 4 people at a high end restaurant could be around $350,

6.
the 20% service charge is a tidy sum, and understandably, a traveller will feel some frustration on finding that he or she won’t be getting that back. Make sure your travellers get into the habit of splitting up their business trip expense claims into appropriate sections – public transport, meal allowance, gratuity etc. as this will enable your finance team to have full transparency into trip spend. Mobile technology can make a big difference to your expense management programme. Many expense platforms enable the user to photograph receipts and upload for instant processing. This minimises the paperwork for your finance team and will often include a tip amount in the claim. Such a seamless automatic approach to expenses will enable you to have greater insight into just how much your travellers spend whilst they’re away on business. To ensure your travellers are not tipping unnecessarily, encourage them to research social custom prior to leaving for their trip. It’s a simple way to save the pennies and adhere to local etiquette.
For advice on expense management policy, or any other aspect of our onestop business travel management service, email: sarah.vincent@amitytravel.co.uk or call us on 01489 589958

Business traveller If your business takes you on a flight from Southampton Airport, we want to still be of assistance at the other end too. Here is some useful info about Düsseldorf and Manchester.
Doing business in Düsseldorf?
Meeting in Manchester?
The Rhine-side city of Düsseldorf is a fashionable trade capital and home to banking, advertising, fashion and telecommunications industries to name a few so it’s no surprise that your business is taking you there.
With a growing economy and a centre of head offices’ for some big brand names, Manchester is a thriving business district – which is no doubt, why you are going there!
Getting around It couldn’t be easier to get to your meeting once you arrive at Düsseldorf Airport as the city centre is just a short distance away. Trains on the S-Bahn line leave from within the airport every half an hour and take 30 minutes. Alternatively, take a taxi which will only take 15 minutes. If your visit is taking you further afield, then you’ll need to take the free monorail from the airport to a separate station (Düsseldorf Flughafen). For more info: www.dus.com/en/ arrival-and-departure/bus-and-train
Getting around Once you arrive, getting around couldn’t be easier thanks to the free city centre buses and express trains connecting the airport, towns and cities of the area. The compact nature of the city also makes walking a popular choice but after you’ve dropped off your luggage! For more info: www.manchesterairport.co.uk/to-andfrom-the-airport DO ONE THING: No trip to Manchester would be complete
without visiting one of the world’s most iconic stadiums. Retrace the steps taken by football legends on The Manchester United Museum and Stadium Tour and marvel at the splendour of this impressive stadium. www.southamptonairport.com/manchester

without a trip to Altstadt (Old Town). This square kilometre is home to more than 300 watering holes and is known as the “longest bar in the world”. Be sure to order the city’s speciality beer Altbier which was first brewed in the region.

The only problem will be deciding which resort to visit first!
Vancouver - the gateway for winter adventure A little further afield, but still departing from Southampton Airport, Vancouver is the gateway for your holiday on the white stuff. Whilst the city itself isn’t adorned with much snow in the winter, you don’t have to go far as the trio of local mountains (Mount Seymour, Grouse Mountain and Cypress Mountain) boast ample fresh powder. Host to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, there are endless opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing.
•
•
Speed skiing is one of the fastest nonmotorised sports on land. Italian skier Simone Origone currently holds the world record for the fastest downhill ski, clocking 156.2 miles/ hour! Snowboarding only became an Olympic sport in 1998 in Japan According to the Telegraph, the creator of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was the first Englishman to write of the thrill of skiing, saying it took you “as near to flying as any earthbound man can”. Skiing was a mode of transport 4000 years ago A crew member of Apollo 17 said that astronauts heading to the moon should learn the art of cross-country skiing. He believed that the technique involved in skiing helped walking on the moon! Mt. Baker ski area in Washington State has the world record for snowfall at 1,140 inches of snow in the 1998/1999 winter season. When Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010, Canada set the record for most gold medals won by a country in a single Winter Olympic games.
Book through ski and snowboard holiday experts Inghams. They have been providing winter holidays for over 75 years and know what you want from your winter getaway. For more info, check out www.inghams.co.uk/ski-holidays
To ski or not to ski? If you prefer your feet to be on less-slippy terrain, there’s still plenty to do. Vancouver is a cosmopolitan city with a thriving art, theatre, music and fine dining scene, so take a stroll through the city’s urban wilderness, visit the aquarium, pick up tickets for a show, sample the portfolio of local wines and beers or go on a horseback adventure with a real cowboy! In Europe, hit the alpine boutiques, chill out in a luxury spa, try your hand at mountainclimbing or hiking or just enjoy the gorgeous mountain views from mile-high cable cars.
There’s so much more to snow sports than just skiing and snowboarding. Have a go at some of these: • • •
Snow scooting – sliding down the slopes on a specially adapted scooter Ski touring - which involves fixing “skins” to the bottom of your skis and walking up hills before skiing back down again Skijoring - being pulled along on skis behind a horse, a team of dogs or a motorised skidoo.

The unspoilt isles of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney are just a short hop away from Southampton Airport with multiple flights a day with Flybe and Aurigny. Within 30minutes, you can be relaxing in the majestic charm of the Channel Islands, each offering their own unique character. Read on…
Jersey life Population: 99,500 (2014) Size: 45 square miles (5 miles long x 9 miles wide) Fly to Jersey in just 30 minutes, around 30 times a week • Jersey’s original airport was located on the beach at St Aubin’s Bay. • Jersey has a Royal Court - equal to the UK’s Crown Court for criminal matters and the High Court for civil matters. • Many of the older houses have a witch’s seat in them. The islanders believed that by providing a seat for passing witches would prevent them from falling foul of evil spells. • Residents are called ‘Crapauds’ (‘toads’ in Jersey French) by other Channel Islanders as Jersey has toads and Guernsey doesn’t. •
Take me there! Guernsey: Fly to Guernsey in less than half an hour with Flybe . Jersey: Flybe go straight to Jersey from Southampton Airport in just 30minutes. Alderney: Aurigny Airlines operate up to 5 flights a day from Southampton to Alderney. Plan your trip on: www.southamptonairport.com
22
Best beach for watersports: St Aubin’s Bay is Jersey’s coastal playground, perfect for exhilarating sporting activities. Charter a skippered yacht or motorboat, don a wetsuit and ride the waves on a windsurf or wakeboard, kite surf or take shelter in a warm beach café and relax as sails colour the bay.
Magnetic Guernsey Population: 63,000 (2014) Size: 24 square miles (9 miles long x 3 miles wide) Enjoy Guernsey in less than 30 minutes, around 30 times a week • Guernsey wasn’t always an island; due to rising sea levels it separated from France around 6000 BC. • Les Misérables was written by Victor Hugo whilst living on the island. • The average life span in Guernsey is 82 years, ranking it 8th highest in the world! • Spring actually arrives four weeks earlier in Guernsey than on the mainland which allows some unique and very beautiful flora to grow.
Don’t miss the food festival: 1st Oct – 11th Nov 2016 Guernsey is a food lover’s paradise and in the autumn, you can sample the delights of the local produce at the Tennerfest – a celebration of the very best island food for a fixed price. More than 170 restaurants take part across the Channel Islands, 75 in Guernsey alone! Devour freshly-caught seafood, try local specialities and artisan cheeses or tuck into favourites including bangers and mash.
Remote Alderney Population: 2,400 (2014) Size: 3 square miles (3 miles long x 1.5 miles wide) Fly to Alderney – 20 times a week • There are no traffic lights, roundabouts or traffic jams and the speed limit is only 35 mph. • Famous residents have been author Elizabeth Beresford (the Wombles), cricketer Ian Botham, Beatles producer George Martin, actress Julie Andrews and swimmer Duncan Goodhew. • The Islanders are traditionally known as ‘Lapins’ as there are so many rabbits on the island. • It’s a paradise for bird lovers with over 7000 Northern Gannet pairs resident in two breeding colonies immediately offshore, totalling approximately 2% of the world population.
Wildlife haven Alderney is a haven for flora and fauna. It is a designated Ramsar site (wetland of international importance) where you can catch a glimpse of fascinating birds and animals, many of which are strangers to mainland Britain. The powerful tides and warm waters create diverse marine life and the mild climate make wild flowers grow in abundance.

Top tips 1.
As there are two official languages in Barcelona, Catalan and Spanish, it may be worth learning essential words and phrases in both languages. To communicate with a wider audience, speak Spanish. 2. In the city for 3 days or more? Consider purchasing a Barcelona Card which gives you free unlimited use of public transport (including the airport train), free entry to the city’s best museums and exclusive deals and discounts. 3. The schedule for meals are different from those of the rest of Europe - lunch time is from 13.30 to 16.00 and dinner time is from 21.00 to 23.00.

Whilst it may be big, it’s also home to some fantastic nature with lush green mountains, rivers and gorges and beautiful parks. Famous for being the most bicycle friendly city in the world, Amsterdam is a fascinating and diverse city. Forget tulips and clogs and discover more of its characteristic architecture, thought- provoking history and elegant floral bridges across the 165 canals. Visit one of the city’s 75 museums from Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum and modern art at the Stedelijk. If you fancy something a bit more chilled then perhaps choose a museum dedicated to handbags or Heineken!
The beautiful town of Limassol is the cosmopolitan hub of Cyprus. It effortlessly blends sophisticated modernisation with its ancient past. From bustling restaurants and cafés in the old town centre to the breath taking marina with its sea views, the beaches of the Akrotiri Peninsula to the gorgeous mountain villages of the Mandaria region, it really is a treasure trove of exciting Greek experiences.

Newcastle Gin is produced by Bealim House in collaboration with local artisan distiller, Durham Gin. Each batch of Newcastle Gin, which has hibiscus tones, is created over two days. The ‘hard’ botanicals are added to alcohol first for 48 hours, then the ‘soft’ ones are mixed in before the five-hour distilling process begins. Solving the downsizing dilemmas Written by Howard Nankivell As one grows older, choosing to downsize to a retirement community comes with a bevy of benefits: living with like-minded people, easier accessibility, improved security and a greater peace of mind that a support network is in place should your needs change. However, despite the long-term practical advantages, there is no doubt that downsizing can be an emotional strain and a logistical challenge. We have spoken with residents and staff at Anchor’s care homes and retirement villages to gather together some top tips for those moving into a smaller property. But moving does not mean people have to leave their most favourite possessions behind, it simply gives them the opportunity to select the best bits or most sentimental items to move with them. Moving out of a home in which one has brought up a family can feel like one is leaving fond memories behind. This does not need to be the case. Rather than taking boxes of drawings, school reports, childrens’ clothes and treasured-photographs to one’s new home, consider splitting these items by child or grandchild and making ‘memory boxes’ which can be given to each individual relative as a memento. Before auctioning off furniture, speak to family members to find out if there are any particular items which they would be keen to take. Take photographs of any furniture or ornaments which you feel you may miss but for which you may no longer have space. If the choice of what to keep and what to get rid of seems overwhelming, storage containers can be hired at a reasonable rate, allowing one to disperse items to family, friends
and charities at a more leisurely pace. Some items can be donated to the retirement village to which one is moving – for example at Bishopstoke Park books can be donated to the library and gardening tools to the village shed. Make sure you are aware of how much storage space is included in your new home – it may be greater than you think. At Anchor we appreciate that our customers are often moving from large family homes and have become accustomed to spacious accommodation. We have designed the rooms at our new developments with this in mind. For example, at our new Hampshire Lakes development in Yateley some rooms include floor to ceiling wardrobes in which we maximise storage space with hanging shoe racks, pull-out drawers and extra shelving.
Relish not having a large garden. Our residents allow the Anchor gardeners to upkeep the grounds, which can be used for walks, reading and family picnics, while still maintaining their own small oasis on their balcony or terrace. Hanging plants, potted shrubs and garden furniture can be added to balconies and terraces to create ideal locations for having a drink and watching the world go by, without necessitating laborious gardening. We also have a kitchen garden area in many of our properties where people can grow their own produce. Most importantly, consider the opportunities which are opening up with the relocation, rather than dwelling on what one might be losing. Anchor’s retirement villages are active communities at which the residents enjoy exercising in the gym, singing in the village choir, discussing literature at the book club and walking in the grounds as well as occasionally taking time to relax in the spa! Making the downsize move is a great opportunity to take up a previously enjoyed pastime or a new hobby, learn new skills and make new friends. Howard Nankivell is Anchor’s Housing Operations Director, a charity and England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care to older people.
