new routes

2015 was a wonderful year for new routes and airlines at Southampton Airport. We welcomed VLM for routes to Antwerp and Hamburg and Aer Lingus Regional for a new route to Cork in the Republic of Ireland starting March 2016. We will also be the first airport within the UK to offer scheduled flights with Volotea to Palma starting May 2016 and will be welcoming Dutch airline, KLM, for flights to Amsterdam with worldwide connections again in May. (See page 6 for our map)

We are looking forward to working alongside Where There’s a Will throughout the upcoming year to raise valuable funds for their wonderful cause.

We are delighted to announce that our Terminal Operations Assistant, Nichola Shaw, was the winner! Soller Railway Take the train to Soller and step back in time by 50 years. The vintage carriages of the train run 27 kilometres along its narrow-gauge tracks through the beautiful and unspoilt landscapes, villages, country stations and scenic mountains down into the citrus valley where the town of Soller is situated.

Facts Almost half the entire population of the Balearic Islands live in Palma.

Cathedral Le Seu Palma's pride and joy has to be the cathedral - one of the world’s finest and largest Gothic structures surrounded by a maze of narrow streets of ancient mansions and hidden squares. In front of the cathedral is the Parc de la Mar with its impressive fountains and sculptures. Bellver Castle Set high on a hill and dominating the skyline since the 14th century is Bellver Castle – the only castle in Spain that is totally circular in design. Built in 1309, the castle began as a summer Royal residence and was later used as a prison. Look out for the graffiti on the walls, carved by French prisoners of war.

Forget the images of the All Day English breakfasts and high rises of Magaluf, there is so much more to the picturesque island of Majorca. The sunshine city and capital of the Balearics, Palma, has palacios and promenades, beautiful beaches and beautiful people, chic restaurants and boutique hotels and yet has still managed to retain its old town charm with its lively art scene, rich historical attractions and ancient architecture. Located on the south coast of Majorca, this cosmopolitan vibrant city offers a big-city experience on a small-town scale. The art scene

Now a hub of old town, the cobbled streets of Placa Major (often referred to as the “artist’s corner”) is home to a number of art galleries, an outdoor craft market and a vast range of bars and restaurants dotted around the edge of the square. If you’re in search of modern and contemporary art, head to the gallery and museum Es Baluard which displays works by Spanish modern artists. Located on the old Palma’s harbour side fortifications, it’s also the perfect spot for a sunset drink with the spectacular views of the harbour.

“With all that exploration, we deserved a pint! Did you know that New York has been witness to an explosion in the craft beer industry? A few years ago a number of bar owners got together to create The Good Beer Seal which is awarded to those bars who serve the best beers from local, national and international producers. GREAT VIEWS Instead of taking the ferry to Liberty Island and joining the queues of people, we headed to Battery Park and took the free Staten Island Ferry, we had a great view of Downtown and the Statue of Liberty. It was so simple; jump off one boat and jump back on the return ferry! BEST SKYLINE views we chose the “Top of the Rock” Observation Deck at the Rockefeller Center. At 850-foot, the building is shorter than the Empire State Building but the views are just as breath-taking and perfect to do when you first arrive as it gives you the lay of the land plus the best view of

the monumental Empire State Building and Central Park in all its glory. ICONIC SKYSCRAPERS Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and look back at the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan. It certainly gave us a different perspective as we looked back at the skyscrapers – something which is quite hard to do as you walk around the ‘concrete jungle’. Once across the bridge, we strolled around Brooklyn Heights and into DUMBO – the area underneath the two bridges where there are a number of interesting shops, restaurants, art galleries and arty venues. We recommend a hot chocolate and a cookie from Jacques Torres Chocolate (66 Water Street, Brooklyn) and

then to sit back in either Empire Fulton Ferry Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park where you’ll be greeted with fantastic views back across Manhattan including both bridges. As we were doing New York ‘our way’, we chose to walk back into the city over the Manhattan Bridge with beautiful views of Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge itself.” UNEXPECTED From the end of March for two weeks the popular department store Macy’s comes alive with spectacular floral displays consisting of millions of live flowers, plants and trees from around the world – all which bloom in unison. There’s also plenty of places to stop off for some great coffee and cake on route.

South Downs Way Level: Intermediate / Advanced Named as one of Lonely Planet’s 1,000 Ultimate Adventures, the 100 mile long South Downs Way is an epic bike ride. Starting in Winchester and finishing in Eastbourne, this fantastic route provides riders with a chance to ‘get away from it all’ and experience some fantastic countryside and panoramic views.

Dear Southampton Airport, Next month we have been married 60 years and for our Honeymoon we went to St Helier Jersey and had a wonderful week there. The aeroplane we travelled on was a Dakota and the runway was grass with a strip of concrete.
