Hampshire Guest Guide - SOUTHAMPTON

Southampton’s must-visit attraction is SeaCity Museum, which tells the story of the people of the city through the ages, their fascinating lives and the area’s historic connection with the sea.

Gateway to the World Titanic Story The most famous ship in the world, the RMS Titanic, pulled away from White Star Dock in Southampton at the start of her maiden voyage on 10 April, 1912. In the early hours of 15 April she struck an iceberg and sank, causing great loss of life. Nowhere was the tragedy of the Titanic disaster more felt than in Southampton, where more than 500 households lost a family member. Visitors to the museum will discover how many people worked on board and the huge variety of jobs the crew carried out. The centre-piece of this gallery features a 1:25 scale, interactive model of the Titanic. Through powerful oral testimony from survivors, the Disaster Room describes the sequence of events from the time the ship struck the iceberg to its sinking, and the rescue of passengers by the Carpathia. Also, there is a fascinating audio visual show for visitors to find out about the British Inquiry, which was held in London soon after the disaster.

Gateway to the World Gateway to the World recounts the stories of people who have departed from or arrived in the port of Southampton over the last 200,000 years with themes of invaders and settlers, traders, exiles and soldiers. This gallery introduces visitors to people who

have passed through Southampton: from Roman traders bringing new merchandise, Saxon settlers setting up homes bringing in new trades and skills to Hamwic, or Huguenot Protestants seeking refuge and Victorian industrialists with links across the British Empire. Digital touchscreens and hands-on activities invite visitors to interact and engage in exhibits and share their Southampton stories. To help put the city into context, a large interactive map reveals the development of Southampton from small Stone Age settlements into the walled medieval town and through the ages to its present size.

Special Exhibition Area SeaCity also hosts a range of exciting temporary exhibitions in the stunning Pavilion extension. This year, the ever-popular Wildlife Photographer of the Year from the Natural History Museum returns to the museum over the summer. This is followed by the arrival of Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered from the V&A Museum of Childhood in October, which celebrates the joy, excitement and occasional frustration of playing board games. SeaCity Museum is open daily 10am – 5pm. Visit www.seacitymuseum.co.uk for ticket prices.

Tudor House Discover Southampton’s most important historic building, encompassing over 800 years of history on one site. Tudor House, with its beautifully recreated Tudor knot garden, is just a few minutes walk from the city centre. The timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from the garden, dating back a further 300 years. Tudor House gives a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of both its residents through the years, and of Southampton itself. Enjoy a vivid and exciting audio-visual show which explains the history of the house, alongside interactive screens that rotate to show how the rooms would have looked during different historic periods, in particular the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian eras. A selection of restored artefacts are on display in the museum, including archaeological finds dating back to the medieval and Tudor periods. Special events are held throughout the year, including hugely popular Halloween & Christmas activities. Tudor House & nearby Westgate Hall are also available for weddings and corporate hire. Within this historic complex, we offer a wide range of rooms which can be laid out in different styles to suit your event – be it a meeting, conference, product launch, team building day or corporate hospitality with a difference. They may be used by themselves or in combination to enable, for example, breakout sessions and the ability to provide catering and refreshments separately from the main venue. Alternatively, it is possible to hire the entire venue for exclusive use.

After a tour of the house, you can enjoy a cream tea in the café overlooking the tranquil garden.

Don’t miss the chance to cruise on Southampton’s ‘hidden gem’! A heritage, cargo-passenger ship included in the National Historic Fleet, SS Shieldhall was launched on the Clyde in 1955, and later owned by Southern Water until her purchase for £20,000 in 1988 by the charity that still operates her. Today the Shieldhall is a unique seagoing ‘time capsule’. She provides a working example of steamship machinery both above and below deck, typical of the cargo and passenger ships that plied the oceans of the world between the 1870s and

1960s, after which they became all but extinct. Whilst other heritage ships are held permanently in dry dock, the Shieldhall is very active, with a programme that allows passengers to access the impressive steam engines at work in the engine room itself, and the bridge, complete with traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork. Passengers are encouraged to see how the ship operates, and meet the Captain and volunteer crew. Relax on board and listen to the commentary of the sites and sounds of Southampton Water, as Shieldhall

passes the outgoing cruise ships. Shieldhall is considered a very stable vessel, providing an excellent viewing platform. There is plenty of covered seating on board, a Children’s Passport to follow, and a fully licensed bar and saloon serving hot snacks and refreshments. The 2017 cruising programme runs from June – September, with a variety of trips from 2hr to all-day cruises. Look out too for ‘alongside events’ taking place in dock.

Step back in time

On the banks of the Beaulieu River, in the heart of the New Forest, you will find the unspoilt haven of Buckler’s Hard. This once thriving shipbuilding village, where ships for Nelson’s fleet at Trafalgar were built, remains untouched by the passage of time. The Maritime Museum reveals its unique story, bringing to life the characters who lived there at the time of Master Shipbuilder Henry Adams. Visit the labourers’ and shipwrights’ cottages and the Chapel of St Mary’s, which was once believed to be the centre of operations for smuggled goods along the Beaulieu River in the late 18th century. The Beaulieu River is one of the few privately owned estuaries in the world and the custodianship of the Montagu family over four centuries is what has kept it such a special place today. Stroll along the riverside pathways or join the River Cruise, operating between Easter and the end of October, which transports you on a tranquil journey (separate charges apply). Early in 2017, see Gipsy Moth IV which Sir Francis Chichester sailed on an epic voyage 50 years ago to become the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe. * See the website for full details. Until the summer visit artists in residence at The Observatory. The two rotating structures stand on turntables to change the view of the landscape and are part of a collaborative project with the arts charity SPUD. Then enjoy refreshments at the Captain’s Cabin Tea Rooms. Location: New Forest, HaNTS,SO42 7XB www.bucklershard.co.uk

A view to the past Visitors to Beaulieu can see more of the Montagu family home than ever before, with the opening of a private wing of Palace House showing part of the late Lord Montagu’s private apartment. The newly opened section includes the library which was used by the late Lord Montagu as a sitting room and office, where he would play his favourite music. Lining the corridor is a new exhibition, The Lady and the Rebel, which is a tribute to two remarkable women in the Montagu family who, between them, spanned the whole of the 20th century. Another section of the wing has become the first dedicated Soviet Russian art gallery in the UK. The Art Russe Foundation collection includes a display of 25 paintings and sculptures at Beaulieu. New for 2017 is the restoration of a Victorian kitchen in Palace House, where Lord Montagu’s cook will give cooking demonstrations after its opening in the spring. The original kitchen was gutted in the early 1950s to make way for a motorcycle display. The Beaulieu attraction is best known as being home to the National Motor Museum, with its display of more than 250 vehicles from every motoring era, ranging from some of the world’s most iconic Land Speed Record breakers to motoring oddities such as a giant orange on wheels! Meet the talking crash test dummy in Driving Change, which explores motoring innovations and technologies and tells the story of motoring right up to today’s electric vehicles.

Special displays include For Britain & For The Hell Of It featuring Beaulieu’s iconic Land Speed Record cars and The Motorcycle Story about motorcycling history. Grand Prix Greats and Road, Race and Rally feature F1, rallying, trials and drag racing exhibits. Jack Tucker’s Garage recreates the sights, sounds and smells of a typical country garage from the 1930s while the Wheels pod ride takes you on a fascinating journey through 100 years of motoring. On Screen Cars displays TV and film favourites including Del Boy’s Reliant Regal as featured in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses and the flying Ford Anglia used during the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Enter the World of Top Gear, which will feature vehicles from the new 2017 series as well as those created by presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. In the grounds of the attraction, visit the 13th century Beaulieu Abbey, its Cloisters and Herb Garden. Then enjoy the picturesque grounds and gardens and meandering pathways beside the Beaulieu River. Travel around the attraction in the replica 1912 open-topped London Bus and take a ride on the the high-level monorail. Don’t miss the Secret Army exhibition which tells the story of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) which trained secret agents at the Beaulieu ‘Finishing School’ during WWll. All of the features are included on the standard Beaulieu attraction admission. Tickets can be bought on the day or in advance online. Located at the South east end of Winchester they are 4 unique and interesting concepts.

What are the Black businesses?

The Black Boy: a back street boozer full of antiquities and curios. The pub is famed for its selection of local real ales and home cooked food. It has a large garden surrounded by a cloisters with covered seating and heating. There are no juke boxes or fruit machines, its just an old fashioned pub. The Black Rat: this is one for the foodies. Having held one Michelin star for the last 5 years, it serves some of the best food in Winchester. Set in a converted pub, this is fine dining in a relaxed ambience. The food is modern British, with an emphasis on some of the more old fashioned cuts. There are even huts in the garden for those that like dining al fresco. Booking is advisable, but easy to do on line. The Black Bottle: set in a lovely listed building, there is nothing old fashioned about it’s offering. This is a wine bar with a difference. There are 32 wines by the glass that are dispensed from machines. Have a taster to check you like it before you try a whole glass? There are over 150 wines, so there is a wine that should suit everyone. The Black Hole: this is the latest business to be added. Don’t be put off by the prison doors and mugshots on the walls, this is a beautifully decorated bed and breakfast. All 10 rooms are en suite with a full English breakfast being offered in the morning. Check out the roof terrace for some of the best views of Winchester.

Stardust Years Vintage Fashion S

et back from the High Street, in a leafy mews, you’ll find Winchester’s latest vintage treasure. Opposite the Man On A Horse statue by Elizabeth Frink, Walcote Place is home of ‘Stardust Years Vintage Fashion’, recently featured on BBC TV’s ‘Money For Nothing’ Opened in July 2013, by Karen Fitzsimmons and her husband, Gary Nicholson, ‘Stardust Years’ brings to Winchester the glamour and style of past times – from the Victorian era through to the 2000s. Karen comments, “Fans of ‘Downton Abbey’ can find an original 1920s beaded dress or purse, alongside more recent pieces such as an evening gown designed by Thomas Starzewski, who designed for one of our most famous fashion icons, Diana, Princess of Wales.” It’s clear that Karen has a passion for her stock. “I grew up watching the films of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Whether it was Bette Davis striding across a room in a finely-tailored 1940s suit, or Grace Kelly, in a 50s cocktail dress, pouring champagne for James Stewart in ‘Rear Window’, I loved it all. In the shop, we even have an Oscar-nominated costume worn by Glenda Jackson and a fur stole believed to have been worn by Vivien Leigh. All our clothing and accessories are hand-picked so we can ensure the highest quality of fabric and tailoring. Not only do we have pieces by Christian Dior, Hardy Amies, Harrods and Hermès, but we also have items from the stores of the day as well as many hand-made dresses

which reflected the changes in the economic and social climate of the period. We attract a lot of ladies looking for a unique piece, whether it’s for a cruise, a Mother of the Bride or just as an alternative to the high street.” In ‘Stardust Years’ the stock is lovingly displayed according to decade, and Karen researches each label or company, including this in her detailed, and often witty, labels. Through her research, Karen has been lucky enough to make contact with the later generations of some of the designers and manufacturers of the past. One such example is the Rayne family. “In the late 1940s, young Edward Rayne joined the family firm (founded in 1885) and soon ‘society ladies’ were drawn to Rayne Shoes as they became renowned for their style, beauty and craftsmanship. So, it was only natural that Buckingham Palace chose Rayne to design and supply the wedding shoes for Queen Elizabeth II. Today, the Rayne family have created a Rayne Shoe Archive and Stardust Years is proud to have donated a pair to this special collection.” So, is it the quality of the clothing, the comfortable dressing room, or the lovely vintage music in the background that makes this a Winchester ‘must-visit’ shopping destination? “I hope we provide a friendly, relaxed shopping experience where you can browse, research our fashion books or share the memories stirred by our vintage treasures,” says Karen.

Winchester Cathedral

ifteen centuries of English history lie behind the magnificent Cathedral you see today. It stands at the heart of historic Winchester, once the seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power, on the site of an early Christian church. Begun in 1079, the Cathedral has been a place of worship ever since. Today the Cathedral welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and in recent years has become well known for its annual Christmas Market and open-air ice rink, which alone attract over 350,000 visitors. A walk round the Cathedral takes you through centuries of English architecture. Particularly striking is the vast gothic nave, the longest medieval nave in Europe. Great works of art, including paintings, sculptures and carvings can be found throughout the building. Don’t miss the Crypt, this atmospheric part of the Cathedral is home to Antony Gormley’s contemplative statue ‘Sound II’ which, after prolonged periods of rainfall can be seen standing in water. The Winchester Bible, the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles, is one of the Cathedral’s greatest treasures. Its exquisitely illuminated capital letters, coloured with gold and lapis lazuli, are as intense today as they would have been 800 years ago. The Cathedral is the resting place of many influential and famous people including Saxon kings, bishops and the much-loved English novelist Jane Austen, who was buried in the Cathedral in 1817 – 200 years ago. As well as her grave, memorial plaque, and an exhibition telling of Jane’s life in Hampshire, there are many events taking place this year, all of which are listed on the Cathedral’s website.

Visiting the Cathedral A guided tour provided by the Cathedral’s own volunteer guides is by far the best way to explore the building. Available on the hour from 10am – 3pm Monday to Saturday, these hour-long tours really do bring the Cathedral, its characters and history to life. It’s worth taking the time to walk through the Cathedral’s historic Inner Close where you will find beautiful buildings and hidden gardens and a gateway to a pretty area of the City known as Kingsgate Village. A perfect way to round-off your trip is a visit to The Refectory, serving homemade cakes, a seasonal lunch menu and a good range of drinks. The pretty terrace and orchard with outdoor seating enjoy good views of the Cathedral. The Cathedral Shop sells a wide range of gifts, cards, books and music, many items have been commissioned especially for the Cathedral so can’t be found anywhere else. A selection of products are available to purchase online via the cathedral website. www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk

The Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is a fabulous destination any time of the year An uplifting experience

There’s something uplifting about a ferry journey at the start of a holiday. It’s a ritual – the drive to the coast, the signposts leading to the docks and the first glimpse of the sparkling sea. The sensation of the vessel as you move away from the dry land…and the way the excitement builds as you see the island approaching.

There’s a variety of excellent places to stay on the Isle of Wight. From luxury hotels and spas, to vintage trailers and campervans through to award winning holiday parks and camping sites, there really is something to please everyone and every budget.

Welcome to the start of a visit to the Isle of Wight; the UK’s holiday island.

Food lovers will find a range of great Isle of Wight produce available in shops and on menus. Great local produce includes gin, beer, cheese and tomatoes to name a few. The Isle of Wight also has its very own Garlic Farm!

Fantastic holiday destination

Great things to do

The Isle of Wight has long been a popular holiday destination. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert chose it for their holiday hideaway and built Osborne for their family to enjoy. Now open to all, you can visit the palace, grounds and even step inside Queen Victoria’s private bathing machine. Today the Isle of Wight is still recognised as a fantastic place to get away to – small enough to get around and large enough to provide respite from the hustle and bustle of mainland life. The natural beauty of the Island along with its quirky, characterfilled pubs, seaside resorts, picturesque villages, bustling towns and diverse range of attractions make it a fabulous destination any time of the year.

Something for everyone

It’s simple to keep the whole family entertained on the Isle of Wight. From animal attractions, outdoor activities, heritage buildings and museums through to spas, fine dining and vineyards there’s plenty to do for everyone. Quiet country lanes, designated cycle paths and footpaths through picturesque countryside make the Island a great place for walking and cycling too.

There are superb beaches across the Island. Whether you’re looking for a family beach for paddling and sandcastle building, a stylish café to enjoy a glass of wine and crab sandwich by the sea or a deserted beach for a reviving winter walk, with over 65 miles of coastline there are there’s plenty of choice. There’s even the casts of real dinosaur footprints on one Island beach; it’s no wonder the Natural History Museum call the Isle of Wight the ‘Dinosaur Capital of the UK’. The Isle of Wight Festival and Cowes Week are key events in the calendar and the Island is full of exciting events all year round. Shipwreck Isle Pirate Festival (July), Isle of Wight Beer and Buses weekend (October) and IsleWalk walking festival (April/May) are a few, not to mention the popular carnivals on in towns and villages nearly every week throughout the summer months. the Portsmouth

Itineraries ItineraryONE

Seaside fun for all the family The UK’s only island city boasts a magnificent promenade running from Eastney to Old Portsmouth. Along the length of the beach are a plethora of attractions for all ages – many evoke memories of traditional seaside holidays of the past with swan-shaped pedalos on Canoe Lake and the nearby pitch and putt. The Tenth Hole, a popular café, sitting alongside the course, is well known for its eye-poppingly large cakes and is a great place for breakfast too. Southsea Castle is the place where Henry VIII watched the Mary Rose sink. Now it’s a great place to visit and the kids will have hours of fun exploring the passages below ground. Every weekend throughout the summer there is live music from an assortment of musicians at the Band Stand. Pack a picnic and prepare to enjoy great music, a party atmosphere and one of the best backdrops in the world. (You will see everything from warships to sailing ships, hovercrafts, ferries and pleasure boats traversing the Solent). There is a fascinating walk from Clarence Pier to Old Portsmouth. You can follow the route along the raised section with the harbour to one side and the old town to the other and see such landmarks as Portsmouth Cathedral, the Square Tower (often open for arts and crafts/ vintage events) and the Round Tower where generations have welcomed home their sailor sweethearts, waving as the navy ships pass close-by.

ItineraryTWO Shopping, shopping, shopping There’s no doubting the attraction of Gunwharf Quays when it comes to shopping. Once the former home of HMS Vernon, the Royal Navy’s Torpedo Branch, the site now boasts 90 designer outlets at this great location with easy parking – and after you’ve finished with the shops, there are wonderful bars and restaurants to revive you. Nearby is Commercial Road which houses all the major high street names and the Cascades Shopping Centre. While in Southsea you will find Knight and Lee (John Lewis) in the Palmerston Road precinct along with a large Debenhams department store.
If you prefer to shop in independent boutiques, head for Marmion Road and Albert Road where you will find everything from antiques, artworks and artisan chocolates. Take the time to wander and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. At the end of a shopping spree, make your way to the Belle Isle in Osborne Road for great food, a buzzing atmosphere and a pitcher of Sangria.

If you’ve not managed to fit everything in, you’ll just have to come back!

ItineraryTHREE Creative Portsmouth With its long association with great authors Portsmouth’s literary heritage is well known and you will find blue and brown plaques around the city. Charles Dickens was born in the city in 1812 and his birthplace, a small house on Old Commercial Road, is now a museum, which celebrates the author’s life and his many novels. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle worked in Portsmouth as a doctor and it was at No. 1 Bush Villas on Elm Grove that he wrote the first two Sherlock Holmes novels.
Rudyard Kipling also lived for a time in the city and you will find his house in Campbell Road which bears a blue plaque to mark his time in the city from 1871-77. Portsmouth is still a creative city, with a thriving contemporary art scene. Turner Prize winning artist Grayson Perry studied for a BA in fine art at Portsmouth Polytechnic and it is home now to a thriving creative scene. There are always exhibitions of fine and decorative art at the free Portsmouth Museum, with a collection spanning 500 years of art, sculpture, photography, print, glass and ceramics. There is an exhibition programme, which changes every few months and other creative events and activities, along with a lovely café and open garden area for the warmer months. For contemporary art and upcoming artists, Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays hosts artists from around the world with a first-class programme of exhibitions. There are also smaller galleries that hold regular exhibitions such as Art Space’s Gasp Gallery. Art Space also hold ‘open studio’ events several times a year. There are also regular exhibitions in alternative spaces such as hairdressers and orthodontists, garages and pubs. All along the seafront in

40

the warmer months there are creative events from art fairs at the Square Tower to craft workshops at Southsea Greenhouse. If you’ve not managed to fit everything in, you ’ll just have to come back! My Dog
Sighs (featured
on BBC2’s The
Culture Show) is a
great proponent of the free art scheme and you can see more of his work by visiting www.mydogsighs.co.uk. To see some of his spectacular wall art in the fresh, walk down Exmouth Road from Albert Road, past the colourful terraced houses towards Marmion Road and just before the junction, there is a garage on the right hand side with a spectacular piece of his work. (Take the time to watch My Dog Sighs - A Can is Born on Vimeo). My Dog Sighs collaborated with five other artists on painting the walls of Hilsea Lido of which certain parts can be seen from the M27 and M725 motorways.
On Albert Road, there’s plenty of street art to admire, remember to look up and you might see something quite unexpected. At 1 Albert Road is the immensely popular Garage Lounge – perfect for morning coffee, wonderful lunches or fantastic tea and cake. Or why not wander through the Palmerston Road precinct to sample the delights of Like a Teatray in the Sky on Osborne Road. Great food, lovely people, a fun vibe and some of the most delightful crockery you are ever likely to see. As evening approaches head to one of the theatres; the Kings Theatre in Southsea or the New Theatre Royal to see cutting- edge dance, opera, ballet or if you are visiting during the summer months, look out for the open air performances. But if live music is more your scene, Portsmouth Guildhall boasts an impressive calendar of live music, comedy and shows whilst the Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea is a well- established live music venue, playing host to many national and international live acts in the worlds of music and comedy.

• Indulge in an ice-cream on Southsea beach whilst watching the UK’s only commercial Hovercraft. • Head to the top of the Emirates Spinnaker Tower and if you dare, walk across the glass floor. • Take a stroll along Albert Road, Castle Road and Palmerston Road to seek out the great independent shops and curiosities. • Visit the Historic Dockyard and explore Portsmouth’s great history with the sea at one of the many museums, which tell the story of the city’s navel heritage, people and contribution to Britain’s maritime history. • Listen to at band at the bandstand on Southsea Common or enjoy the wide open space– perfect for kite flying, picnics, ball games and lazing in the summer sunshine.

GUNS

This world-renowned collection contains over 75,000 objects, including arms, armour and artillery from the early medieval period to the present day, from Europe, Asia and the Americas. Fort Nelson houses the Royal Armouries’ collection of artillery and historic cannon – the Big Guns – with over 350 on display, tracing the development of artillery from pre-gunpowder siege machines to the modern day. This vast Victorian fortification, high on the chalk ridge of Portsdown Hill, was built in the 1860s as part of a defensive chain around Portsmouth and its vital Royal Dockyard. It is probably the best surviving example of a Victorian fortress and has been restored to its original 19th-century state, together with parts of its Second World War history.
