Well know for it’s connection with the Titanic and remaining visible history with the Bargate Monument and Old Town Walls. It’s museums support its history with the SeaCity Museum telling the story of the people of the city, their fascinating lives and historic connections with Titanic, and Tudor House revealing over 800 years of history in one fascinating location at the heart of the Old Town. What are your top 5 favourite things to do when in Southampton? Well if I had to just pick five I would say: 1. A pie and a pint or two at the Dancing Man Brewery. 2. Going to gigs at Southampton’s many live music venues. 3. Visiting the Southampton City Art Gallery. 4. Shopping for books and vinyl. 5. Chilling out on Southampton Common in the summer. What are the must-sees and dos? As of last year the Common People Festival is hopefully set to be a mustdo annual event. For a bit of history the Tudor House and Gardens, and Vaults Tour are perfect, you could even test your bravery with a Ghost tour at night! A nice aspect of Southampton is its location, making it easy to visit stunning places like the New Forest. Finally for those who love good food and a relaxing drink, Oxford Street is just the place to go.

Southampton’s must-visit attraction is SeaCity Museum, which tells the story of the people of the city through the ages, their fascinating lives and the area’s historic connection with the sea. Titanic Story The most famous ship in the world, the RMS Titanic, pulled away from White Star Dock in Southampton at the start of her maiden voyage on 10 April, 1912. In the early hours of 15 April she struck an iceberg and sank, causing great loss of life. Nowhere was the tragedy of the Titanic disaster more felt than in Southampton, where more than 500 households lost a family member. Visitors to the museum will discover how many people worked on board and the huge variety of jobs the crew carried out. The centre-piece of this gallery features a 1:25 scale, interactive model of the Titanic. Through powerful oral testimony from survivors, the Disaster Room describes the sequence of events from the time the ship struck the iceberg to its sinking, and the rescue of passengers by the Carpathia. Also, there is a fascinating audio visual show for visitors to find out about the British Inquiry, which was held in London soon after the disaster.
Gateway to the World Gateway to the World recounts the stories of people who have departed from or arrived in the port of Southampton over the last 200,000
years with themes of invaders and settlers, traders, exiles and soldiers. This gallery introduces visitors to people who have passed through Southampton: from Roman traders bringing new merchandise, Saxon settlers setting up homes bringing in new trades and skills to Hamwic, or Huguenot Protestants seeking refuge and Victorian industrialists with links across the British Empire. Digital touchscreens and hands-on activities invite visitors to interact and engage in exhibits and share their Southampton stories. To help put the city into context, a large interactive map reveals the development of Southampton from small Stone Age settlements into the walled medieval town and through the ages to its present size.
Special Exhibition Area The Pavilion, the iconic building attached to SeaCity Museum, houses our special exhibitions. This year, the exhibition Port Out, Southampton Home, celebrates the golden age of the ocean liner. These ships were the lifeblood of Southampton, bringing employment, industry and glamour to the city. From the early days in the 1890s to modern day cruise liners, this major
exhibition tells the story of these great ships and evokes the romance of sea travel and life on board. It includes a wide range of rarely seen items from the city’s maritime collection, including ship models, posters, photographs and ephemera from liners such as menu cards and souvenirs. Visitors of all ages can have a go at activities such as deck quoits, try on uniforms, or find out what was served for a meal in First Class on the Queen Mary. SeaCity Museum is open daily 10am – 5pm. Visit www.seacitymuseum.co.uk for ticket prices.

Don’t miss the chance to cruise on Southampton’s ‘hidden gem’! A heritage, cargo-passenger ship included in the National Historic Fleet, SS Shieldhall was launched on the Clyde in 1955, and later owned by Southern Water until her purchase for £20,000 in 1988 by the charity that still operates her. Today the Shieldhall is a unique seagoing ‘time capsule’. She provides a working example of steamship machinery both above and below deck, typical of the cargo and passenger ships that plied the oceans of the world
between the 1870s and 1960s, after which they became all but extinct. Whilst other heritage ships are held permanently in dry dock, the Shieldhall is very active, with a programme that allows passengers to access the impressive steam engines at work in the engine room itself, and the bridge, complete with traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork. Passengers are encouraged to see how the ship operates, and meet the Captain and volunteer crew. Relax on board and listen to the
commentary of the sites and sounds of Southampton Water, as Shieldhall passes the outgoing cruise ships. Shieldhall is considered a very stable vessel, providing an excellent viewing platform. There is plenty of covered seating on board, a Children’s Passport to follow, and a fully licensed bar and saloon serving hot snacks and refreshments. The 2016 cruising programme runs from June – September, with a variety of trips from 2hr to all-day cruises. Look out too for ‘alongside events’ taking place in dock.

Tudor House Discover Southampton’s most important historic building, encompassing over 800 years of history on one site. Tudor House, with its beautifully recreated Tudor knot garden, is just a few minutes walk from the city centre. The timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from the garden, dating back a further 300 years. Tudor House gives a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of both its residents through the years, and of Southampton itself. Enjoy a vivid and exciting audio-visual show which explains the history of the house, alongside interactive screens that rotate to show how the rooms would have looked during different historic periods, in particular the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian eras. A selection of restored artefacts are on display in the museum, including archaeological finds dating back to the medieval and Tudor periods. Special events are held throughout the year, including hugely popular Halloween & Christmas activities. Tudor House & nearby Westgate Hall are also available for weddings and corporate hire. Within this historic complex, we offer a wide range of rooms which can be laid out in different styles to suit your event – be it a meeting, conference, product launch, team building day or corporate hospitality with a difference. They may be used by themselves or in combination to enable, for example, breakout sessions and the ability to provide catering and refreshments separately from the main venue. Alternatively, it is possible to hire the entire venue for exclusive use.
After a tour of the house, you can enjoy a cream tea in the café overlooking the tranquil garden.

Enoteca
Neil and Laura Moodley started Enoteca in January of 2016, based on a loose interpretation of the Italian Enoteca establishment. These small, usually informal restaurants dotted around Italy, tend to focus on good quality but inexpensive wines as well as good, local, simple food. Very often, they encourage diners towards the idea that people love being able to order many dishes from a menu and share those dishes with their dining companions. The menu was designed by Neil and tested extensively on his very willing wife and children, using both Italian inspiration as well as the classical techniques learnt at Gordon Ramsay’s Tante Marie Culinary Academy where he achieved his Cordon Bleu Diploma. Both Neil and Laura truly believe food is the greatest unifier of people. A meal shared is, in their view, a great comforter, a great inspirer and the best way to feed mind, body and soul. Beyond that, a table laden with delicious food is an unbeatable medium through which friends and family can share quality time. The restaurant is developing a reputation for extraordinarily good food - one diner compared the Tiramisu to “Angels tap dancing on your tongue.” High praise indeed! Mango Thai Tapas Since opening in 2007, the original Mango Thai in Portswood’s boho student area has become renowned on the South Coast for its intimate charm and vibrant atmosphere. The family-run tapas bar has since opened two more in the city. The second on Above Bar Street is located footsteps from the Guildhall and Mayflower Theatre, making it ideal if you are looking for a pre- or post- concert/theatre drink or meal. The most recently opened is a short walk from Ocean Village marina and Oxford Street. Offering an informal and fun dining experience, there’s nothing quite like the energy that spills out of Mango’s front doors; plus subdued lighting and candles, big windows, exotic murals, tropical plants and eclectic music all add to the promise of a Thai beach bar. The food, though, is ultimately Mango’s greatest pull… Thai cuisine is a blend of spicy, salty, sweet and sour, and this balance of tastes is the essence of Mango’s dishes, which are made to order by their team of Thai chefs. Spices are specially imported from Thailand and, whenever possible, only fresh ingredients and locally sourced meat is used. A separate menu is available for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets, and other requirements are well accommodated for on request. Combining Thai food with small plates provides diners with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of the tastes of south-east Asia together; and, following Thai culture, Mango’s menu is format free – enjoy it whichever way takes your fancy: a starter then a main, or a mix of dishes all together, or the ‘Spanish way’ – a couple of tapas at a time enjoyed with a drink. Specialities from the tapas menu include Coconut Chicken, Crispy Soft Shell Crab, and Crispy Beef; and the authentic Thai curries and noodle dishes from the mains menu are not to be missed by all accounts. The kitchens are open 7 days a week from midday, with good value lunch deals and 4 for 3 on Thai Tapas until 5 pm. Other offers include 2-4-1 cocktails daily at the Above Bar venue, and 20% off the food bill when you book for or after 9.30 pm at Above Bar and Portswood. Mango holds weekly live music nights across the three venues – check the website for up-to-date listings. And, should you be visiting over a weekend, Mango Ocean Village Bar & Lounge regularly holds late music nights/ events on their lower floor level (open until 3 am or later). It’s worth noting that whilst Mango Portswood and Mango Above Bar offer a more ‘restauranty’ atmosphere, Mango Ocean Village operates a walk-in only policy for groups of less than six people – a ‘pop in for a drink and maybe a bite to eat’ kind of attitude. While you wait for a table, the bartenders will take pride in creating a cocktail especially for you or helping you pick from their extensive back bar selection. Whichever Mango you visit, you’re in for a treat. Delicious, authentic Thai food, a lively atmosphere and good value, make Mango a ‘must visit’ whilst in Southampton. www.mangothai.co.uk

amble Village is a picturesque village in the Hamble Valley and a great spot for enjoying a relaxing afternoon by the water. In the centre of its quaint and cobbled High Street you’ll find the Bugle pub and restaurant, stood proudly and ready to welcome you in. This grade II listing building enjoys a terraced area perfect for a cold drink on a summers day right by the waterfront, and an interior that offers warm and cosy surroundings, perfect for any time of the year. This classic pub is heaped with tradition with its flagstone walls, wooden rafters and antique floors. Pride of place in the centre of the building is a large brick built fireplace that not only makes for a real feature of the venue but an atmospheric centrepiece when lit on cold nights. The wooden tables and nautical images that hang on the walls nod to the maritime history found within Hamble Village. The warmth of the pub is matched by the welcoming efforts of its friendly staff that take attentive care of you throughout your visit and help to portray a home-away-from-home vibe. The bar is well stocked with speciality rums and local beers to wet your whistle, and the locally sourced fresh produce and seasonal menu means you’re in for a dining treat. From the start the menu you’ll find some traditional favourites such as Crackling with apply source. Perfectly crispy there’s no better way to get stuck into this than with your hands, perhaps not one for a first date but we guarantee it will leave a smile on your face! For a more delicate starter the Smoked Scottish Salmon with crayfish and horseradish foam kick-start the appetite perfectly and certainly feel in keeping with your nautical surroundings. For the mains a Spinach Risotto is the ideal choice for vegetarians or for anyone who enjoys a creamy risotto full of flavour, complete with Viola edible flowers this dish tastes as good as it looks. Keeping it local with the Hampshire Steak Burger prepare for a mouth full of heaven as you sink into this thick, juicy burger, full of flavour. Locally sourced you can really taste the quality with every bite. If you’ve still got room for dessert then the Lemon Tart with Blood Orange Sorbet is the perfect pallet cleanser. The freshness of the sorbet is the perfect way to finish off the meal. For chocolate lovers then the Chocolate Brownie is perfect, with its crispy edge and rich gooey centre. As the warmth of the brownie melts the accompanying vanilla ice cream you’ll be left feeling relaxed and content. After your meal you can continue to enjoy the homely atmosphere for a drink from the bar or a soothing coffee. Once you’re done you are just a stones throw from Hamble Quay allowing you to finish your visit with a pleasant waterside walk.

Theatre on a plate at
The White Star Tavern
Location: 28 Oxford Street, Hampshire, SO14 3DJ
outhampton’s Oxford Street is the social hub of the city and home to award winning bar and restaurant, The White Star Tavern. Taking its name from the White Star Shipping Line and a base for many that began their fateful voyage on the infamous Titanic, The White Star Tavern is a part of history. True to its heritage, the décor throughout the White Star has kept in-tune with its past. Even with its modern touches you can still imagine the passengers from the past 100+ years passing through before boarding ships travelling all over the world. Still as popular today, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a fine meal before boarding one of the many cruise liners that depart from Southampton. The modern touches throughout give this venue a trendy edge making it a great spot for an evening drink. The restaurant encompasses fine dining and is the only restaurant in Southampton that can boast 2 AA Rosettes. Attention is taken with every detail at the White Star, and head chef Matt Noonan and his team highlight this perfectly with every dish they put on the table. Starters such as Salt Baked & Pickled Beetroot Salad combine the crunch of the beetroot with the creaminess of the goat’s cheese for a perfect combination of textures, exploding with flavour at every mouthful. Silky smooth Chicken Liver parfait with an incredible depth of flavour that perfectly accompanies lightly fried croutons. Each main dish that reaches the table is presented with great care and finesse. Picture perfect cuisine that takes you to a new level of fine dining. Roast lamb wonderfully cooked that slices with ease and is united with a spinach wrapped parcel of couscous, that looks as pleasing as it tastes. Honey roast duck breast which has been rendered to perfection to give it a crispy skin and meat that melts in the mouth, all lovingly combined with a pickled ginger jus to tantalise those taste buds. You may well find your appetite has been completely satisfied at this point, but we urge you to go for a dessert anyway, they are worth it for their presentation alone! You will be pleasantly surprised when it’s not a bowl of stodgy rice pudding that lands in front of you, but a deconstructed masterpiece of smooth rice pudding, silky jam and a passion fruit ice parfait that cleanses the pallet. If it’s a showstopper you’re after, “Chocolate Death” is nothing short of theatre on a plate! Don’t be scared by this coffin shaped dessert, with it’s warm brownie centre surrounded by a chocolate crumb soil, blood splattered raspberry coulis and a skull shaped burnt white chocolate and vanilla parfait that finishes it off perfectly. This dessert is unexpectedly lighter than you’d expect and with flavours that will make putting the spoon down before you finish, near impossible. Once you’ve finished your meal, sit back and take in the surroundings and the ambience. Whether you come for its history, elegant atmosphere or fine dining, one thing is for sure; a visit to The White Star Tavern is a treat for all the senses.

Steak of the Art Southampton
O
pened in February 2016, Steak of the Art redefined what eating out means in Southampton. Perfect for those looking for pure foodie pleasure, the restaurant, which is located at Admirals Quay, Ocean Village, combines an electric artistic atmosphere with some of the best steaks served anywhere across the south coast. From the moment you step inside customers are rewarded with a real wow factor. Split over two floors, 130 covers are indoors while the remaining 40 are outside providing a vista unlike anything else in the city and the ideal spot to soak up the summer sun while enjoying a refreshing drink and bite to eat. The restaurant itself is a living gallery with pictures and paintings on display (and for sale) from local artists including work from the Southampton Art Society. The venue also includes a quirky crow’s nest where up to six customers can sit and enjoy their meal while overlooking the rest of the venue. A Titanic themed mural adorns one entire wall. Made up of over 40 aluminium panels it links Southampton’s historical past with the famous ship. There are also a number of
booths which offer a more private dining experience for up to six people. The nautical theme continues throughout the whole restaurant with the floor incorporating numerous nautical flags while the private dining area, which is great for meetings, private events or family gatherings is decked out with a series of ropes. The importance of sourcing the very best ingredients is a real labour of love for the team and is reflected in the quality of the meat and fish. The team insists that all the main ingredients have good provenance with amazing quality, and the Southampton restaurant benefits from getting its meat and fish from some amazing suppliers which includes Cornwall-based Philip Warren butchers and Fish for Thought. Steak of the Art is a totally new concept and one that has captured the imagination of the people of Southampton and is a great place to go for visitors to the city. Customers will be able to enjoy some top quality food but they will also be able to take in some excellent art. For visitors who just want to visit the art gallery, enjoy a quiet drink, coffee or light bite they are more than welcome.
