History in the City >>
Southampton has over 60 monuments
A fascinating past Southampton has a rich and varied heritage with buildings dating back to the 11th century. From the Romans who established a settlement to the Saxons who built a township and then the Normans who built a castle in the 1100’s, of which parts still remain. Learn more about the invaders and settlers with a visit to God’s House Tower (Museum of Archaeology). During the Victorian period, the port of Southampton grew and the celebrated White Star shipping line moved its headquarters to the city. It was from here that RMS Titanic set sail on her ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. The story of Titanic and Southampton’s maritime heritage can be enjoyed at The Wool House (Maritime Museum) and in 2012 a new Sea City Museum will be opened to celebrate the city’s links with the sea.
Old Town, new ideas Southampton’s Old Town district is just to the south of the city centre. This magical part of the city boasts famous residents and visitors including the Pilgrim Fathers, William the Conqueror, Jane Austen and even Shakespeare who it is claimed visited the Dolphin Hotel. Visit the Old Town at night on one of the famous ghost tours to reveal the spirit of the area! By day, the Old Town is truly remarkable, capturing the essence of the Tudor period through a wealth of original architecture and attractions. The 800 year old Bargate stands as a prestigious entrance to the Old Town. The 15th century Tudor House and Garden, due 8
s and 450 listed building to open Summer 2011, is a spectacle not to be missed with a unique exhibition that uncovers 500 years of history and a magical Tudor garden with a cafe and shop. The Vaults open to the public during the annual Heritage Days in September and provide an insight into the true scale of the city’s boundaries. Surviving two world wars, the History in the City >> Old Town bears the scars, particularly at the site of the Holy Rood Church. Here you will gain a sense of the damage to this great city due to the intense bombing that took place during WWII. While you take in the incredible history around you, why not stop for a quiet drink or lunch? The Old Town is home to a fantastic range of restaurants and cafes, housing the two oldest pubs in the city, the Duke of Wellington and the Red Lion.
Did you know? All the Kings and Queen of England, from Henry II to our present Queen, have passed through the central arch of Southampton’s Bargate? Or that author Jane Austen lived in the town’s Castle Square during Southampton’s ‘Spa’ period and spent many happy hours dancing in the Dolphin Hotel? If you didn’t, the be sure to join a Southampton Tourist Guides Association Walk and bring the past to life with fascinating historical facts. Find out more about the walks by visiting www.stga.org.uk or to book a tour call 023 8057 1858 (during office hours) 9

Cruise ahead from Southampton Associated British Ports (ABP) Port of Southampton has been synonymous with cruising for over 150 years. This remarkable achievement makes Southampton not only the home of the cruise industry of the UK but also cruise capital of Northern Europe. Excellent road and rail connections to London and international airports, is a major asset for the Port. This, combined with a sheltered deepwater approach channel gives guaranteed, unrestricted access to the world’s largest cruise ships and makes it an ideal turnaround and call in port for itineraries east or west to the Baltic, Iberia and the Mediterranean. Southampton is the home-port for the UK fleets of both P&O Cruises and Cunard line, and is also used regularly by such lines as Royal Caribbean International, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, MSC and Saga Holidays. ABP has in recent years invested over 41 million in its cruise facilities to enable Southampton to accommodate some of the largest cruise vessels afloat The latest investment, at the cost of £19 million is Ocean terminal, a fourth terminal which will enable the port to easily accommodate four cruise ships in any one day! An online map and information guide for cruise passengers is available along with a complete list of cruise calls into Southampton at www.cruisesouthampton.com

Watch the ships go by Mayflower Park is the place where you can get up close to the liners, with special events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the naming and arrival of new ships. From Town Quay, you can pick up the Hythe Ferry to the waterside village of Hythe via the famous Victorian pier and the world’s oldest working pier train. The promenade is among the best vantage points for viewing the ships. Weston Shore looks out across Southampton Water and is a popular site to watch the shipping movements and also provides a great start for walks along the water’s edge. Further east is Royal Victoria Country Park where the beach at the park offers an ideal vantage point for viewing cruise liners.
Take to the water One of the best ways to view the cruise ships is to join them on the water. The Hythe Ferry passes alongside the QEII Terminal offering a unique and up close experience.

Oxford Street is the heart of Southampton’s cosmopolitan and vibrant restaurant scene. Located between the history of the old city walls, and the beautiful residential waterfront location at Ocean Village, the street has been central to the city’s maritime history for over a hundred years. If you like nothing more than to eat, drink and be pampered then Oxford Street is the perfect location to visit restaurants, bars and shops. A handful of the city’s businesses are also located in Oxford Street, providing services including accountancy, and accommodation facilities. Oxford Street is waiting to welcome you, take a look through our site to see what we have to offer.
