Reason#2 to visit : heritage

Reason#2 heritage Southampton has a rich medieval, maritime and aviation heritage, which has shaped the city and its people. There are plenty of areas that maintain the historic ambience with original architecture, cobbled streets and classic feel.

Telling the story

Based at the heart of Southampton, SeaCity Museum tells the story of the people of the city, their fascinating lives and the historic connections with the sea.

Learn about Southampton’s Titanic Story, which includes exhibitions on the crew members as well as a 1.25 scale interactive model of the Titanic. The museum also tells the story of Southampton as the gateway to the world from the Roman traders, Saxon settlers and Victorian industrialists. You can discover the full story of aviation in Hampshire at Solent Sky. The Museum tells the story of twenty-six aircraft companies, the largest flying boat operation in the world and in particular the legendary Spitfire designed at Supermarine by R.J.Mitchell in the heart of the city of Southampton.

In the Old Town, Tudor House Museum reveals over 800 years of history. The timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th century. Explore the delightful gardens and learn about characters from the building’s fascinating past.

St Michael’s Church is the oldest building still in use in the city having been founded in 1070. Underneath the church in the northwest corner is a late mediaeval vault which is a scheduled ancient monument.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat or drink with a little character and a glimpse of the past:

Several of Southampton’s restaurants are housed in some of the city’s most historic buildings and have utilised the historic past so you really feel like you’re dining in history: • • • • •

16

The White Star Tavern in Oxford Street maintains its connection to the Titanic. The Dancing Man Brewery (above) resides in the Wool House build after the French raid of 1338.

The Duke of Wellington pub (above) was originally built upon Norman vaults and cellars in 1220.

The Royal Thai Pier resides in the Royal Pier on Southampton’s waterfront. The Grand Café in a Grade II listed building on Canute Road.

If you are intetested in the historical facts

Henry V marched his troops through the Westgate (still standing) to sail for France and the battle of Agincourt. In 1620 the Pilgrims Fathers chartered The Mayflower to sail to the New World to escape religious oppression in England. They also bought a smaller boat the Speedwell, which was originally built in Southampton, to use permanently when they reached America.

Old Town today still contains a wealth of historical attractions – the 800 year old Bargate was originally built as the main gateway to the medieval city. The city has the longest stretch of unbroken medieval defensive walling in England

connections

Southampton is one of several destinations across Hampshire to be marking the 200th anniversary of Jane’s death, with a programme of events throughout 2017.

Jane Austen spent three periods of her life in Southampton; as a schoolgirl, as a young woman and as an adult when she, her mother and sister lived with her brother Frank Austen in a house near Southampton Castle.

I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H

Jane’s family moved to Southampton following the death of her father and they eventually settled in a “commodious old- fashioned” house in Castle Square. This is believed to have inspired the lines from Mansfield Park - “the effects of the shadows pursuing each other on the ships at Spithead and the island beyond, with the ever varying hues of the sea, now at high water, dancing in its glee and dashing against the ramparts ...”

At that time, Southampton was an old seaport with medieval streets tumbling down to a quay. It was also reinventing itself as a fashionable spa town – in much the same way that the city is currently undergoing a major transformation to bring it up-to-pace with the 21st century demands of its current day residents.

18

Austen fans will be fascinated to learn that the family house, was believed to stand where the Juniper Berry pub can now be found in Upper Bugle Street. The Austen’s took boat trips on the River Itchen to see warships being built at Northam and the Gothic ruins of Netley Abbey. Share your Reasons to Visit #visitsouthampton

The Dolphin Hotel is where she celebrated her eighteenth birthday and often visited dances in the upstairs rooms. The décor may have changed over the years but you can still stand in the be The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel as it is known today and soak up the atmosphere of days gone by.

Celebrating Jane Austen

In one of her early pieces of writing she declared “Beware of the unmeaning luxuries of Bath & the stinking fish of Southampton….” Perhaps because Jane lived down wind of the fish market on St Michaels Square! So did Southampton have more to offer and inspire the budding writer than the waft of herring?

The Southampton Jane Austen Festival ‘The Stinking Fish of Southampton’ aims to answer that question.

To kick off the festival the redoubtable ‘Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre Company’ [named after a contemporary of Miss Austen] will take the audience on a theatrical perambulation of Southampton Spa where you will get the chance to meet the Austens, their friends and neighbours and find out what Nelson really got up to when he popped ashore!

Over the summer, every Sunday from 2 July to the 27th August there will be a different themed walk around old Southampton and old Netley including: ‘Jane Austen & Southampton Spa’, ‘Trafalgar Days’ The Bits Jane Left Out’, ‘Officers & Gentlemen’ and ‘Literary Netley’. For those who liked walking as much as Jane’s heroine Elizabeth Bennet, you will be able to follow in Jane’s footsteps as go on route from her house in Castle Square to Peartree and back. And if you are looking for Mr Darcy the culmination of events in Southampton end with a weekend of walks, talks, exhibition, display, workshops and a Regency Ball at the Dolphin Hotel. Walk the QE2 Mile 20

The QE2 Mile runs through the heart of the city from the Cenotaph down to the waterfront at Town Quay, linking the city’s parks, new Cultural Quarter, shopping High Street, Old Town and historic waterfront. As the most visited part of the city, there will always be something to discover.

Start your walk from Brunswisk Place and take in the delights of some of the city’s prettiest parks – don’t miss the Titanic memorial opposite the Cenotaph (see page 26 for details on the Titanic Trail). You will pass by the majestic Guildhall, which hosts many of the biggest names in music and comedy. Also in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter you will find Southampton Arts Complex, which includes John Hansard Gallery and the modern masterpieces on view at Solent University’s contemporary art space. In 2016 there will also be a new Performing Arts Centre and City Eye, which runs Southampton Film Week Continuing southwards you reach the main shopping thoroughfare with access to The Marlands and Westquay shopping centres. The Bargate is one of the most distinctive buildings in Southampton and you can pass through its historic arch on the way to the old town. More independent shops can be found in East Street. Holy Rood church is another distinct landmark as you make your way to Town Quay and the end of the QE2 mile. It was bombed in WW2, the ruin now holds memories you can experience through sounds posts. The 13 tonne anchor from Southampton’s famous cruise liner, QE2 takes pride of place in front of the church which is dedicated to the sailors of the Merchant Navy. As you approach the waterfront and near the end of the QE2 Mile, on your right hand side you will see where archaeologists uncovered the Medieval Mayor’s Wine Vault and the home of Walter le Fleming – the richest man in Southampton at the time and immortalised in a bronze statue on the modern walkway linking the medieval walls close to Westquay Shopping Centre. Maritime Reason#2 to visit : heritage

Southampton

Southampton has a long associated link with the sea, from the celebrated White Star shipping line which moved its headquarters to the city, to the continuous developments and investment from Associated British Ports (ABP) Port of Southampton, to welcome and cater for the world’s largest cruise vessels afloat.

It is also well known for being the home port for world famous vessels such as Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, and regularly hosts cruise industry occasions such as the launch of the UK’s biggest-ever purpose-built cruise ship, Britannia, Royal Caribbean’s second Quantum-class ship, Anthem of the Seas, and the return of Royal Princess. Proud of its Cruising industry the Port of Southampton has been named the UK’s Best Departure Port for the eighth year running.

Take to the water

One of the best ways to view the cruise ships is to join them on the water. Blue Funnel Cruises offer a variety of day cruises from Ocean Village including Harbour Tours, River Cruises, Solent Cruises and a range of dinner and party options. Southampton is also home to the oldest active cargopassenger steamship in Europe, the SS Sheildhall, which has a cruise programme running between May and September.

From Town Quay, you can pick up the Hythe Ferry to the waterside village of Hythe via the famous Victorian pier and the world’s oldest working pier train. The Hythe Ferry passes alongside the QEII Terminal offering a unique and close up experience of the magnificent liners.

When cruise ships are in the city comes to life. It’s recommended to avoid driving near the ports during this time to avoid heavy traffic, but many cruise passengers can benefit from dedicated park and ride services around the city.

Reason#2 to visit : heritage

There’s nothing quite like watching those big ships when they are in port. Mayflower Park is the place where you can get up close to the liners with special events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the naming and arrival of new ships.

The promenade at Hythe is among the best vantage points for viewing the ships. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the Marina with its distinctive ‘fishing village’ style development and sit and watch the ships, yachts and boats out on the water. Weston Shore looks out across Southampton Water and is a popular site to watch the shipping movements and also provides a great start for walks along the water’s edge.

Further east is Royal Victoria Country Park where the beach at the park offers an ideal vantage point for viewing cruise liners before they pass Hamble Point and head towards the Solent. Stuck out into the Solent, Calshot Spit is a great spot to wave off those lucky cruise passengers.

Maritime life in Southampton isn’t just about the big ships, however. The city’s waterfront developments and marinas offer wonderful opportunities to sit back and relax and watch the sumptuous yachts go by.

Ocean Village has outstanding recreational facilities for yachtsmen as well as trendy bars and restaurants beside the water. Further upstream on the River Itchen is Shamrock Quay, a bustling marina steeped in history.

Walk the Titanic trail

Southampton will forever be associated with the name of RMS Titanic.

The pride of the White Star line began her ill-fated journey from Southampton taking hundreds of local residents with her as members of her crew. 2012 marked the centenary of the tragic sinking of the ship and it was the year SeaCity Museum opened its doors to the public. START your Titanic trail at SeaCity Museum and explore the city’s historic connections with the ship. Within the Civic Centre you can also find the Titanic Postal Workers’ Memorial and Titanic Book of Remembrance.

When you leave the museum, head for the Above Bar Street and ornate Titanic Engineer Officers’ Memorial in East Park (opposite the Cenotaph) unveiled in 1914 featuring a sevenfoot high angel.

Head down the QE2 Mile to Holy Rood Church and see the Titanic Crew Memorial, which was paid for by the subscriptions of friends and family of the crew.

Oxford Street is where to head to next, passing the former Sailors Home (now Salvation Army Centre). Stop in The Grapes pub, which dates to the 1850’s. Four members of the Titanic’s crew, including three brothers named Slade, famously stayed here too long on the morning of the ship’s departure. They arrived at the quayside, as the ship was about to leave and were refused entry. Close by is the impressive South Western House, formerly a hotel where many of the wealthy guests stayed the night before the Titanic sailed. The Grand Cafe is situated in this historic building and a perfect stop for refreshments and to soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era. Finally, walk done Canute Road to the Canute chambers, the former headquarters of the White Star Line, and see where the Southampton families anxiously gathered to await news of their loved ones. Reason#3 to visit : A city of leisure

Reason#3 A city of leisure Southampton is a great city for leisure activities. Whether your definition of leisure is to shop until you drop, to get active and compete in sports, to have fun or perhaps relaxation is at the top of the list there’s plenty of places to visit across the city.

Retail Therapy

If it’s one thing Southampton isn’t short of that’s shops. From Bedford Place at the top end of town, stretching through to the Below Bar at the southern end, there is something to suit every style and budget.

Shops range from well-known high street names including John Lewis, Next and Marks and Spencer, to independent boutiques, specialist shops and market stalls. Westquay Shopping Centre is Southampton’s largest shopping complex with over 100 stores spread over three floors. You’ll find clothing stores for all ages, shops for accessories, games and gifts. If you’re feeling peckish during your shop then head up to the third floor where you’ll find a whole level dedicated to food, including the Handmade Burger Co. and YO! Sushi.

The Marlands Shopping Centre offers a great range of shops from independent boutiques and well-known shops including the Disney Store! You’ll also find crafts, toys, perfumes and coffees amongst the good selection of clothing stores. The café’s selling sweet treats and delicious beverages are great fuel to keep you going. Bedford Place is north of the city centre and has the atmosphere of a bygone era, in what is probably the last bastion of small independent boutiques and quality businesses.

A base for exploration

Reason#3 to visit : A city of leisure

There is plenty of family fun to be found across the city but Southampton is also a great base for exploring Hampshire and the south coast.

Fifteen miles west of Southampton is the New Forest, a national park of open heath, ancient woodlands and plenty of family attractions. Here you’ll find the world-famous Beaulieu home of the National Motor Museum, Palace House and World of Top Gear. A short journey down the road and you’ll discover Bucklers Hard Maritime Museum on the banks of the Beaulieu River. The New Forest is also home to the New Forest Wildlife Park offering a lovely family day out with plenty to see from Otters to Wolves!

Take a Red Funnel ferry or the Red Jet to the Isle of Wight for a day visit or relaxing break. The stunning island destination is a short distance from Southampton with unspoilt scenery and a wealth of family attractions including Dinosaur Isle, Britain’s first purpose built dinosaur museum and visitor attraction.

To the east, approximately 25 miles from Southampton lies the historic waterside city of Portsmouth, home of Fort Nelson. Strategically positioned on Portsdown Hill Fort Nelson is a historic monument and home to the Royal Armouries National Collection of Artillery.

Travelling up the M3 you come to the historic city of Winchester and home to the Winchester Cathedral one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Just on the outskirts of Winchester you’ll find Marwell Zoo where you can get close to wonders of the natural world, and for a more adult day out and for Gin-lovers the Bombay Sapphire Distillery in Whitchurch is a must! Described as the beautiful breathing space between the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth, and less than ten miles east of Southampton, the Hamble Valley is a picturesque area of coast and countryside with waterside villages along the River Hamble.

Where is the Hamble Valley? take a look!

What’s included? THAIKHUN.CO.UK

If you’ve travelled to our country, you’ll know that street food is a way of life. Traditionally we’ve cooked outside, stopping the house from getting even hotter! Ingenuity comes pretty natural to us Thais, and we’re entrepreneurial too, so much so that we grabbed the opportunity to start selling the amazing food that we cook at home on the street, taking over almost every street corner of bustling Bangkok. We’ve taken inspiration from back home and transported the sights and smells right here to Thaikhun, a journey of nearly 6,000 miles!

2 night stay plus breakfast for 2 adults and 2 children at Highfield House Hotel. A visit to SeaCity Museum. Dinner at The Real Greek, Southampton. A visit to Beaulieu, National Motor Museum. Dinner at Thaikhun, Southampton.
