DESTINATIONS
The Beast from the East has finally released its icy grip, and we are happy to see so many customers en route to various fantastic holiday destinations. This summer we are excited to continue with our usual favourite routes to Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza with their secret beach coves. We would also like to welcome our brand new airline Lolo that will whisk you away to the Greek Island of Skiathos with its pine forests and blue flag beaches – the famous scenery of the Mamma Mia movie! Following demand from ski passengers, easyJet will be back this winter with the flight to Geneva, which you can start booking now up until 25 March 2019. Having listened to your valuable feedback, we are undertaking a significant refurbishment of our Priority Lounge and enhancing the amount of seating in our catering facilities in the departure lounge both of which will be available from June this year. We hope that you are looking forward to our increasing range of destinations and airlines and the high-standard services that we offer at our awardwinning airport. So just relax and enjoy your journey as you breeze through Southampton Airport.

Airport news “My my, how can I resist you?” – your Skiathos holiday is finally here!
The island of Skiathos, the magical set of the Mamma Mia! movie, is finally closer to the UK thanks to our partners at FlyLolo. So don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience the first direct flight to Greece from Southampton Airport! Book now at www.flylolo.com
Here’s to 100 more!
Southampton Airport has warmly welcomed Baton Relay runners as part of the Royal Air Force’s Centenary celebrations on 19th of April. RAF members have passed on a specially designed baton to members of the airport’s staff, which they carried to its next destination at Solent Sky Museum. The airport has got a great history with Royal Air Force - Southampton Airport is where the first flight of Spitfire took place back in 1936, and that history goes on to current date with modern aircrafts flying from our airport to various destinations. We are proud to recognise the commitment of the Royal Air Force and the work we do together for the greater good!
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the new airport drone! Although it looks just like a falcon to the casual observer, it is actually an ornithopter – a type of drone designed and flown to mimic the actions of the bird of prey. Named Robird®, the drone is used to deter real birds from the airport, thus preventing them from colliding with the aircraft. This innovative drove has been thoroughly trialed at Southampton Airport in partnership with NATS and the developers, Clear Flight Solutions. Unlike all the traditional methods of avoiding bird strikes, Robird actually forces creatures to change their behavior without bringing any harm to them. During the three-month trial, the number of birds around the airport has been reduced by 30%.
Southampton Airport is the first airport in Europe to trial Robird, and we are proud to set an example on aircraft safety to all of our colleagues!

She and her boyfriend Kit call the police, and in that moment, four lives change forever. Fifteen years on, Laura and Kit live in fear. Little Fires Everywhere by CELESTE NG In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at an unexpected and devastating cost...
The Midnight line by LEE CHILD Jack Reacher takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It’s tiny. It’s a woman cadet’s graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher’s a West Pointer too, and he knows what she went through to get it. He’s still shaken by the recent horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don’t get in his way.

The wildflowers by HARRIET EVANS Tony and Althea Wilde. Glamorous, argumentative... adulterous to the core. They were my parents, actors known by everyone. But the past was always going to catch up with him ... it comes for us all, sooner or later. This is my story. I am Cordelia Wilde. A singer without a voice. A daughter without a father. JESS BURRIDGE
Walk The Floor With… Jess Burridge, Airside Operations and Safety Controller 1. What does your daily job involve? There are two parts to the Ops role. There is the Operational side to the role which includes, runway inspections, marshalling of aircraft, stand planning of aircraft and ensuring that duties airside is completed safely. The other side is more security based which includes monitoring aspects of the airport from the Control centre. 2. What is your favourite part of what you do? There are so many different roles in Airside Operations it is hard to choose a favourite and sometimes it is hard work but I really enjoy my job. 3. How long have you been with Southampton Airport? I’ve been in Ops for nearly a year and a half. Previously I was in Security for just over three years, so nearly five in years in total. 4. What training did you have to go through before you could do this job? I first started by getting to know what was involved by learning all the background knowledge and the supporting documents that we have. At first I started with a trainer, but after I had gained enough experience, I completed competency checks to sign me off for each individual function, like marshalling. 5. What made you decide to want to work in aviation/at the airport? Previous to my current role I used to work for the council, so when I saw the job advertised for Southampton Airport, I thought it would be an interesting change. 6. What do you like about working at Southampton Airport? I like working alongside other departments and speaking to lots of different people as part of my role. Working at the airport varies a lot especially when it comes to weather, for example the winter months pose more challenges than the summer months, namely with the fog, snow and ice. 7. What has been the highlight of your time working here? The recent “Beast from the East”, working with the team trying to clear the snow and get the airport operating again. It was hard work, but it was enjoyable at the same time 8. What is your favourite aircraft? It would probably have to be the Airbus 320, it’s a bigger aircraft than we usually get and now with the recent flights to Geneva with EasyJet we have them in more frequently. We marshal them slightly differently from the Embraer’s as they require to go on two stands rather one. 9. What is your favourite destination from Southampton Airport? Edinburgh, I have family there that I enjoy visiting. 10. What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? A lot of walking and enjoy taking my dog on the beach, I find it relaxing.

WINNER AMANDA GRINYER (SECURITY SUPERVISOR) Amanda Grinyer went over and above her call of duty when looking after a passenger who arrived for his flight at 6:30am on the 9th of January. He wrote: “my neighbour had given me a lift to the airport but we never made it as it was dark and we crashed at Cadnam roundabout. But thanks to the trees on the roundabout they saved our lives and apart from some aches, pains and in total shock I came out of it”. Once Amanda learned what happened, she took over everything and gave the distraught passenger sweet tea. Mandy, you truly are a diamond of a member of staff!
LEE BANKS (APCOA) Lee and his team have been highly praised for running the short stay car park and for looking after their customers. The whole team has been noted to be efficient, friendly and helpful, and always approach everything with a personal touch – something that you see very rarely in most of the service industries. One particular loyal customer wanted us to say that he always felt looked after with Lee remembering his name and assisting him with car entries or exits. We know how busy the car park gets, but we just wanted to say thank you so much to Lee and his team for making the whole customer experience amazing!
CHEERS FOR ELAINE MAJOR Congratulations to Elaine Major, who has now marked 10 years of working at Southampton Airport. She joined Airport Security back in 2008 and has been looking after our safety ever since. Thank you so much Elaine for your hard work, and here’s to 10 more!

Escape to the Costas
Wide sandy beaches nudge crystal blue waters beneath palmcovered mountains. This attractive shelter almost guarantees day-long year-round sunshine on the popular ‘sun coast’ of Andalucia. This is the original Spanish holiday destination for many Brits and the fact that we are still coming back here every year for more is reflected in its diverse range of resorts. There really is something for everyone - from high energy resorts to idyllic rural retreats.
There are the big busy resorts of Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Benalmadena with their enthusiastic nightlife and the quieter, more relaxed ambience of resorts like Nerja and nearby Frigiliana. But there are also parts of this lovely region, the hidden Spain, which you may not be familiar with. Salobrena is a smallish coastal resort set amongst high cliffs and lush tropical plantations with a 10th century Moorish castle. Montejaque is a traditional rural village on the slopes of the Grazema National Park – complete with donkeys, sheep and rare birds. It is an ornithological and botanical paradise; and offers a real escape holiday complete with hot-air ballooning and caving.

Best for couples: Benalmadena Best for families: Nerja Best for luxury: Marbella Best for budget: Torremolinos In complete contrast, there are the playgrounds of the rich and famous; stylish Marbella and nearby Puerto Banus with an elegant marina, wonderful restaurants and bars, lots of golf courses, excellent shopping and sophisticated nightlife. All the mainstream resorts are reasonably close to each other. Each has a unique atmosphere but they all have a good choice of restaurants, bars and cafes. Most offer excellent watersports and tennis.

An intoxicating mix of ancient and modern. Great weather. White sandy beaches. A warm welcome. No wonder the Costa Blanca or White Coast, is so popular with both Spaniards and overseas visitors. And while everyone comes for the great weather – it has one of the sunniest climates in Spain – the lovely white sand beaches, the exceptional food and the very warm welcome, everyone takes their holidays there differently. The port city of Alicante is a popular tourist destination. Complete with a castle, old quarter and long waterfront, it makes for a picturesque holiday hotspot. With plenty of opportunities for leisure enthusiasts to enjoy great scuba diving, fishing trips and golf courses in and around the city on this stunning Mediterranean coast.
www.southamptonairport.com
You may choose fun, action-packed beach resorts like Benidorm, or opt for the tranquillity of staying in a luxury villa with private pool tucked away at the foot of the Montgo mountains – and yet still only 6km from the lovely family beach resort of Denia. With a selection of villas, apartments and hotels there is a range of accommodation and resorts in the Costa Blanca to suit just about everyone.
If you’re looking for a family holiday destination, Costa Blanca is ideal for teenagers. Highlights to keep them off their screens include: • Mundo Mar Marine Park in Benidorm where they can get up close with dolphins, seals, sea-lions and exotic birds. • Children are never too old for waterparks and Aqualandia in Benidorm is one of the largest waterparks in the world.

SPOTLIGHT ON
the Algarve Portugal’s southernmost region the Algarve is well-known for its alluring coastline, golden beaches and spectacular cliffs. The resort towns range from bustling tourist hot-spots to quintessential villages with whitewashed walls and terracotta roof tiles. The many layers of the Algarve are what gives it its charm, and lends itself to an ideal holiday.
Escape
Awash with vibrant colours from tropical flowers to mosaic streets reflecting the Moorish and Roman influences. The region is covered with fig trees, orange groves and almond trees. The eastern coast offers idyllic deserted beaches and ancient towns with narrow cobbled streets and craft markets. Inland the green forested mountains and the old spa village at Monchique make for a relaxing day out.
14
Beauty
The Algarve has some beautifully unspoilt areas. The whole coastline to the west of Lagos has a rugged terrain with impressive cliffs that fall away into the sea. The dramatic cliffs give way to deep green pine forests leading down to secluded coves and small fishing villages. Dotted along the coastline you’ll find idyllic secluded beaches with sheltered bays or limestone rock stacks to explore.

History
Each of the towns of the region has their own distinctive culture and heritage, and a surprising amount can be seen within a relatively short space of time. The history of the Algarve is easy to see through its Moorish influenced decorative glazed tiles (“azulejos”) on the buildings and it’s many churches that date back to the 15th and 16th century. Traditional Algarve crafts such as pottery, basket making, weaving and lace making are still found today, making popular souvenirs for tourists.

Biarritz Situated on the Basque Coast in the south west of France, just 22 miles from the border of Spain, Biarritz is a popular seaside resort which is now known as Europe’s surfing capital. It’s long, wide beaches make it a favorite amongst families. The Grande Plage de Biarritz (The Big Beach) is right in the heart of the Biarritz resort. Whilst the children enjoy building sandcastles in the golden sand you can relax in the shade of the famous blue, yellow, green or red striped beach huts. If you have older kids, they’ll love the adventure of learning to surf in one of the world’s most famous destinations for it. Many of the surf schools offer lessons or camps for children. If you can tear the family away from the beach it’s well worth a trip to the lighthouse overlooking Biarritz, and the bridge and viewing platform around Virgin Rock, Biarritz’s most famous landmark, is a great spot for getting a family photo! If you need some time out of the heat of the sun then a trip to the aquarium makes for a great family day out. The family will also love a ride on the Petit Train de Biarritz, the little train, which offers a nice and easy way to see the sites.

Corsica also boasts a wonderful landscape, with glittering bays and fabulous beaches to breath-taking valleys and hilltop villages, the island boasts more than 2,000 kilometres of nature trails and 1,000 kilometres of shoreline. Variety is its charm - tomorrow you could be hiking and the next day relaxing on the golden sands of one if it’s many beaches whilst sampling the local delicacies. Amongst the most beautiful are the southernmost beaches of Tamariccio (an almost-full circle of sand) and Palombaggia with its smooth pink rocks in Dalí-desert shapes.

After a short 2-hour flight from Southampton you’ll find yourself in the wonderful Roman city of Verona. You’ll discover mouth-watering food, welcoming Italians, charming villages and lively resorts amongst its many wonderful sights. Around Verona, midway between Milan and Venice you’ll find Italy’s largest Lake - Lake Garda. With shorelines stretching over 90 miles, it reaches across the three Italian regions of Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige. You’ll love the contrasting landscapes around this beautiful, shimmering lake – gentle plains in the south and dramatic mountains in the north. The lake is lined with pretty, chocolatebox villages and resorts, with plenty to see and do, and ferries ply the lake, taking you wherever you want to go. For spectacular panoramic views of the lake take the Cable car Malcesine up Monte Baldo. Located in Malcesine on Lake Garda the cable car opens from www.southamptonairport.com
25th March 2018 to the end of October 2018 and offers amazing 360 degree views during the ride. Discover the historic center of Sirmione through the Castle of Sirmione, a fortress of the Scaligeri era with walls that are surrounded by the calming water of Lake Garda. The fortress dates back to the 13th century and was the defensive and port control for the city. If you’re a bit of a thrill seeker you’ll love Gardaland, an amusement park with everything from family-friendly rides to adrenaline pumping roller coasters. On a particularly hot day you may prefer Canevaworld, a waterpark with tube & chute rides, a lazy river, adult pool and restaurants. Of course you can’t visit a beautiful lake like this without getting on the water. Whether you chose to hire a boat or enjoy a guided tour, you’ll love exploring and it’s the perfect place to really take in the dramatic lakeside mountains.

Did you know that: • Lake Garda is Italy’s biggest lake at an area approximately 370 square kilometres. • The maximum depth is 350 metres. • It is the birthplace of the violin. Gasparo De Salo, was born at Salo on Lake Garda in 1540. He was an Italian music pioneer and one of the earliest known violin makers. • There is a “hidden” hot sulphur spring at its very tip where hot springs bubble naturally, at a stady 95 degrees farhenheit – ideal for families with little ones.

Rick Stein is famous for his ocean delicacies, fresh seafood dishes, and catch of the day delights! Historically the only place you could sample a Rick Stein dish was in Cornwall, but now you simply need to head to Winchester High Street where you can enjoy his cuisine right in the heart of this beautiful city. Enjoy a welcome break from a busy day and discover the perfect place for a spot of lunch. You’ll feel in-touch with the big blue from the moment you step in the door with clever little touches to give an authentic feeling of being by the sea. You’ll be well looked after by the attentive staff and can sit back and relax as the chefs in the open kitchen add a touch of flair to the atmosphere with the sizzle of fresh fish on the grill. The restaurant offers both a la carte and set lunch menu options, which include a good selection of non-fish based delights, a vegetarian menu and gluten free options. Rick Stein’s emphasis on simple cooking ensures the quality of the produce is the hero of the dish. Each course is simply cooked to perfection, with a nod to its coastal heritage. The wine menu boast a selection of wines picked by Rick Stein himself and complement the dishes perfectly. A crisp white wine goes down a treat with tender fish that falls off the bone. At Rick Stein’s in Winchester it’s not just about the food, it’s about the experience, and from the moment you step in the door a great experience is what you’ll have. © David Nash

“It’s quite a feeling to know that we could now charter a boat tomorrow and be off”
CASE STUDY :
Picture: son Rhys 16, dad Andrew, daughter Megan 20, mum Helen and Megan’s boyfriend Matthew 19
The John Family [RYA Day Skipper and RYA Comp Crew] The John family from Cheshire in Knutsford had little sailing experience before learning to sail a cruising yacht abroad. The decision to learn to sail could be life-changing as mum Helen explains: How did you decide on a sailing holiday abroad? We live about as far inland as you can be and we are not involved in yachting, but we are an active family; we go skiing and walking, and some friends of ours with a boat share took us out with them one time. We loved it and off the back of that my husband did an RYA Competent Crew and kept saying I’d really like it – so we thought we’d go abroad and give it a go in the [theoretical] sunshine! How did you hear about the sail school? Our friend with the boat took all his courses through RYArecognised training centre Learn2Sail in the Algarve, so we decided we would take our RYA Competent Crew with them and my husband would take his RYA Day Skipper, opening doors for us to charter yachts abroad. It’s a wonderful feeling now to know we could go to Greece, go to the Caribbean, wherever… Why was sailing a great option for your family?
Did you all have an equal go at the practical tasks? Our instructor was great at involving everybody. The boys were obviously desperate to get down the front and be rescuing in the Man Overboard drills, especially my 16 year-old son who wanted to be grabbing the sails down or pulling on a rope confidently. Best part of the course? Doing something I never thought I’d do. My husband is delighted to have his RYA Day Skipper – it’s quite a feeling to know we could charter a boat and get it out. It’s opened up a whole new avenue for holidays that we can all do as a family - even my daughter who is nearly 20 still wants to come. My younger son was also really inspired about working on the water saying: “This could be a life”. Why RYA Training? Taking a course helps you get the absolute best out of your week, gives you loads of confidence and going through the RYA means you can be sure of the highest standard of teaching. Will you be continuing your sailing journey back in the UK? Definitely. Well, as much as our location and holiday entitlement will allow, but we are now thinking about a boat share, getting out on the water again and improving our skills – our advice to anyone wanting to have a go is even you have the faintest glimmer that sailing might be nice just get out there and do it. Mark and Jane Sanders run Learn2Sail in Portugal. To find another course in the UK or abroad, simply visit the RYA’s course finder portal www.rya.org.uk/go/whichcourse to narrow your search.
It’s nice to be able do something together that we all enjoy out in the fresh air. Sailing gave us all an equal footing and now we have something in common to talk about where we are all on the same level. www.southamptonairport.com

As the first of his restaurants to open outside of Cornwall, Rick Stein is famous for his ocean delicacies, fresh seafood dishes such as turbot hollandaise, Dover sole meunière and grilled lobster, as well as dishes inspired by his travels around the world. The understated interiors have an urban feel with a subtle nod to their coastal roots. It’s the perfect place to enjoy relaxed dining in Winchester city centre.
