A FASCINATING PAST
Jane Austen Jane Austen spent three periods of her life in Southampton; as a schoolgirl, as a young woman and as an adult when she, her mother and sister lived er age with her brother Frank Austen in a WH alkinitgT rail house near Southampton Castle. SOUTHA
MPTON
Jane’s family moved to Southampton following the death of her father and they eventually settled in a “commodious old- fashioned” house in Castle Square. This is believed to have inspired the lines from Mansfield Park - “the effects of the shadows pursuing each other on the ships at Spithead and the island beyond, with the ever varying hues of the sea, now at high water, dancing in its glee and dashing against the ramparts ...” Austen fans will be fascinated to learn that the family house, was believed to stand where the Juniper Berry pub can now be found in Upper Bugle Street. The Austen’s took boat trips on the River Itchen to see warships being built at Northam and the Gothic ruins of Netley Abbey. The Dolphin Hotel is where she celebrated her eighteenth birthday and often visited dances in the upstairs rooms. The décor may have changed over the years but you can still visit The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel as it is known today and soak up the atmosphere of days gone by. @SarahS

The Mayflower In 1620 the Pilgrims chartered the Mayflower to sail to the New World to escape religious oppression in England. They also bought a smaller boat the Speedwell, which was originally built in Southampton. Southampton was chosen as the rendezvous point for the voyage to America. The Mayflower sailed from London with about 70 people on board and arrived in Southampton about the 29th July where others joined her. The Speedwell was being refitted in Holland and began its journey on 1st August from Delft Haven near Rotterdam with less than 50 passengers aboard. On arrival at Southampton the ship had to have another refit at West Quay with money the Pilgrims could ill afford. As a result the group had to sell some of their belongings, food and stores, to pay Southampton its harbour and other dues. The party from both ships spent nearly two weeks in Southampton. At least one Southampton resident, John Alden, joined the emigrants as a cooper and it is possible that other Southampton families joined the Pilgrims at this time. The Speedwell and the Mayflower eventually sailed from Southampton for the New World on the 15th August 1620. Unfortunately The Speedwell begun to leak and was deemed too unreliable to attempt the crossing so all the people and stores transferred to the Mayflower. Southampton looks forward to commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers leaving the city in 2020.

Walk the QE2 Mile
The QE2 Mile runs through the heart of the city from the Cenotaph down to the waterfront at Town Quay, linking the city’s parks, Cultural Quarter, shopping High Street, Old Town and historic waterfront. As the most visited part of the city, there will always be something to discover. START your walk from Brunswisk Place and take in the delights of some of the city’s prettiest parks – don’t miss the Titanic memorial opposite the Cenotaph (see page 37 for details on the Titanic Trail).
You will pass by the majestic Guildhall, which hosts many of the biggest names in music and comedy. Also in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter you will find Southampton Arts Complex, which includes John Hansard Gallery and the modern masterpieces on view at Solent University’s contemporary art space.
Holy Rood church is another distinct landmark as you make your way to Town Quay and the end of the QE2 mile. It was bombed in WW2, the ruin now holds memories you can experience through sounds posts. The 13 tonne anchor from Southampton’s famous cruise liner, QE2 takes pride of place in front of the church which is dedicated to the sailors of the Merchant Navy.
TM © 1988 CML
Continuing southwards you reach the main shopping thoroughfare with access to The Marlands and Westquay shopping centres. The Bargate is one of the most distinctive buildings in Southampton and you can pass through its historic arch on the way to the old town. More independent shops can be found in East Street.
As you approach the waterfront and near the end of the QE2 Mile, on your right hand side you will see where archaeologists uncovered the Medieval Mayor’s Wine Vault and the home of Walter le Fleming – the richest man in Southampton at the time and immortalised in a bronze statue on the modern walkway linking the medieval walls close to Westquay Shopping Centre.

Walk the Titanic trail
Southampton will forever the name of RMS Titanic.

The pride of the White Star line began her ill-fated journey from Southampton taking hundreds of local residents with her as members of her crew. 2012 marked the centenary of the tragic sinking of the ship and it was the year SeaCity Museum opened its doors to the public. START your Titanic trail at SeaCity Museum and explore the city’s historic connections with the ship.
When you leave the museum, head for the Above Bar Street and ornate Titanic Engineer Officers’ Memorial in East Park (opposite the Cenotaph) unveiled in 1914 featuring a seven-foot high angel.
Head down the QE2 Mile to Holy Rood Church and see the Titanic Crew Memorial, which was paid for by the subscriptions of friends and family of the crew.
Oxford Street is where to head to next, passing the former Sailors Home (now Salvation Army Centre). Stop in the Grapes pub which dates to the 1850’s. Four members of the Titanic’s crew, including three brothers named Slade, famously stayed here too long on the morning of the ship’s departure. They arrived at the quayside as the ship was about to leave and were refused entry. Close by is the impressive South Western House, formerly a hotel where many of the wealthy guests stayed the night before the Titanic sailed. The Grand Cafe is situated in this historic building and a perfect stop for refreshments and to soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era. Finally walk done Canute Road to the Canute chambers, the former headquarters of the White Star Line, and see where the Southampton families anxiously gathered to await news of their loved ones.

Cruising
Credit Joshua Drake @drakeysjourneys
Proud of its Cruising industry, Associated British Ports’ Port of Southampton is the UK’s number one vehicle handling port, Europe’s leading turnaround cruise port and the UK’s most productive container port. With two of the ports four cruise terminals seeing multi-million pound refurbishments, it has enabled the port to cater for the world’s largest cruise vessels afloat. It is also well known for being the home port for world famous vessels such as Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, and regularly hosts cruise industry occasions such as the launch of the UK’s biggest-ever purpose-built cruise ship, Britannia, Royal Caribbean’s second Quantumclass ship, Anthem of the Seas, and the return of Royal Princess. Southampton is also home to the oldest active cargo-passenger steamship in Europe, the SS Sheildhall, with a cruise programme running between May and September. One of the best ways to view the cruise ships is to join them on the water. Blue Funnel Cruises offer a variety of day cruises from Town Quay including Harbour Tours, River Cruises, Solent Cruises and a range of dinner and party options. The Hythe Ferry passes alongside the QEII Terminal offering a unique and close up experience of the magnificent liners.
A city to watch the ships go by
When cruise ships are in the city comes to life. It’s recommended to avoid driving near the ports during this time to avoid heavy traffic, but many cruise passengers can benefit from dedicated park and ride services around the city.
Visit our neighbouring island, Isle of Wight, by Red Funnel Ferry within the hour!

Royal Victoria Country Park Credit Joshua Drake @drakeysjourneys
Mayflower Park is the place where you can get up close to the liners with special events taking place to celebrate the naming and arrival of new ships. The promenade at Hythe is among the best vantage points for viewing the ships. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the Marina with its distinctive ‘fishing village’ style development and sit and watch the ships, yachts and boats out on the water. Weston Shore looks out across Southampton Water and is a popular site to watch the shipping movements and also provides a great start for walks along the water’s edge. Further east is Royal Victoria Country Park, where the pebble beach at the park offers an ideal vantage point for viewing cruise liners before they pass Hamble Point and head towards the Solent. Stuck out into the Solent, Calshot Spit is a great spot to wave off those lucky cruise passengers. The main port of call for all those who have a passion for ocean liner memorabilia is Cobwebs on Northam Road. Here you’ll find ocean liner memorabilia dating from 1830s to the present day.
