History in the City >>
A fascinating past Southampton has welcomed tourists for nearly a thousand years. Its popularity began as a place of pilgrimage in the twelfth century due to being on the route to Canterbury. After the murder of Thomas Becket King Henry II travelled from his lands in France and landed at Southampton, where he had a castle. From there he journeyed onto Canterbury to make his own pilgrimage as atonement for his role in Becket’s death. Pilgrims wanting to follow the route the king had taken, started to flood into Southampton. During the Victorian period, the port of Southampton grew and the celebrated White Star shipping line moved its headquarters to the city. It was from here that RMS Titanic set sail on her ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. The story of Titanic will feature part of the new SeaCity Museum which will open in April 2012, 100 years after the event.
Old Town New Discoveries Southampton’s Old Town is just to the south of the city centre. This magical part of the city boasts famous residents and visitors including the Pilgrim Fathers, William the Conqueror, Jane Austen and even Shakespeare who it is claimed visited the Dolphin Hotel and performed in the courtyard. Visit the Old Town at night on one of the famous Ghost Tours to reveal the spirits of the area! By day, the Old Town is truly remarkable, capturing the essence of the Tudor period through a wealth of original architecture and attractions. The 800 year old Bargate stands as a prestigious entrance to the Old Town and the spectacular Tudor House and Garden is not to be missed with an unique exhibition encompassing over 800 years of history on one site. 8
Southampton has over 60 monuments s and 450 listed building The impressive timber framed house faces St. Michael’s Church, the oldest building still in use in the city. The original Norman Church was built in 1070 and is the only church still active of the five originally within the town walls. Surviving two world wars, the Old Town bears the scars, particularly at the site of Holy Rood Church. Here you will gain a sense of the damage to this great city due to the intense bombing that took place in WWII. The Vaults open to the public during the annual Heritage Open Days in September and provide an insight into the true scale of the city’s boundaries. While you take in the incredible history, why not stop for a quiet drink or lunch in one of the two pubs vying for the oldest in the city, the Duke of Wellington and the Red Lion.
Discovering more Southampton has so much heritage to discover so why not join a Southampton Tourist Guide Association Walk and bring the past to life with fascinating historical facts. Walks take place most Sundays and Bank Holidays, visit www.stga.org.uk for a programme of walks or call 023 80 571858 (during office hours) If you want to meet some of Southampton’s more gruesome residents and characters, join the Sarah Siddons Fan Club theatre company for ghost walks at Halloween and Christmas or a variety of street theatre performances throughout the year, visit www.sarahsiddonsfanclub.org 9

Green Credentials Southampton is the greenest city in Southern England with seven formal parks which were originally common land where the medieval townsfolk grew crops and grazed their animals, converted into elegant parks in the early Victorian period. These Grade II listed parks are now fully restored and have their traditional bandstand, rose gardens, elaborate fountains and imposing sculptures which evoke the city’s history and civic pride.
Southampton Common The huge 326 acre Common, just a short walk from the city centre, is a haven for flora and fauna and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The rest of the Common is home to an abandoned race course and the site of the gallows, the Victorian lake and the country’s deepest artesian well.
The Hawthorns Located on the south east corner of Southampton Common, The Hawthorns Centre is a wonderful biodiversity centre. Great for families and those wishing to learn more about Southampton’s abundant wildlife, you’ll find out about how humans and nature work together and what surprises the future has in store for us all. Interactive displays help you discover more about the creatures and plants that live on the Common. Entry to The Hawthorns is free and the centre is open from Monday to Friday 10am - 5pm and from Saturday to Sunday 12 noon - 4pm. Sporting Chances Southampton has always enjoyed a great relationship with sport. Olympians Tom Daley, Peter Waterfield and Rob Tobin and Commonwealth Gold medalist Max Brick all use the city’s training facilities, and with 2012 being the year of the Olympics this is your chance to Get Active too!
Get up and Get Active! Many of the city’s leisure venues are managed by Active Nation, a charity campaigning to persuade Southampton to be more active! The venues offer a wide range of fun and healthy activities for all age groups across the city. The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex offers amazing facilities, featuring a first-class gym and two fitness studios, and with a great family fun pool, complete with whirlpool and jets, kids will be happily entertained in the water for an age. For those wanting to try something a little different, the South’s premier diving academy holds taster sessions for all ages and abilities in the centre’s Olympic standard diving pool. Likewise, a dedicated swimming pool is available for the real swimming enthusiast. Both Bitterne and Chamberlayne Leisure Centres also boast stateof-the-art gym facilities and offer a wide range of indoor activities, from swimming, gymnastics and racket sports to martial arts and exercise classes, to name but a few! Set in a stunning 150 acre site on the outskirts of the city, Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre is the ideal setting for any outdoor sports and exercise. Home to a newly refurbished international-standard athletics facility, 2 synthetic sports pitches, 12 tennis courts, an incredible new cyclo-cross track and a vast number of football and cricket pitches, this unique venue is the perfect place for serious sports fanatics or recreational athletes alike. 50
