Famous CONNECTIONS

Mayflower 400

In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers chartered the Mayflower to sail to the New World to escape religious oppression in England. They also brought a smaller boat, the Speedwell, which was originally built in Southampton.

Southampton was chosen as the rendezvous point for the voyage to America. The Mayflower sailed from London with about 70 people on board and arrived in Southampton about the 29th July where others joined her.

The Speedwell was being refitted in Holland and began its journey on 1st August from Delft Haven near Rotterdam with less than 50 passengers aboard. On arrival at Southampton the ship had to have another refit at West Quay with money the Pilgrims could ill a ord. As a result the group had to sell some of their belongings, food and stores, to pay Southampton its harbour and other dues. The party from both ships spent nearly two weeks in Southampton. At least one Southampton resident, John Alden, joined the emigrants as a cooper and it is possible that other Southampton families joined the Pilgrims at this time.

The Speedwell and the Mayflower eventually sailed from Southampton for the New World on the 15th August 1620.

Unfortunately The Speedwell begun to leak and was deemed too unreliable to attempt the crossing so all the people and stores transferred to the Mayflower. The Mayflower sailing is celebrated by many in the US as the beginning of a national legacy and, in the UK, as the beginning of one of the most enduring alliances the world has ever known. Southampton looks forward to commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers leaving the city in 2020. Visit www.mayflower400uk.com for more information

Jane Austen

Just imagine Southampton in Jane Austen’s day, at high tide the water would have lapped at the town walls on Western Esplanade (where the Watermark WestQuay development will be built) and there would have been views of the busy shipping channels and port. She may only have lived in the city for two years but Jane Austen left her mark and these connections will be celebrated in 2017 as the 200th anniversary of her death is marked. Jane’s family moved to Southampton following the death of her father and they eventually settled in a “commodious old- fashioned” house in Castle Square.

This is believed to have inspired the lines from Mansfield Park - “the effects of the shadows pursuing each other on the ships at Spithead and the island beyond, with the ever varying hues of the sea, now at high water, dancing in its glee and dashing against the ramparts ...”

Austen fans will be fascinated to learn the family house was believed to stand where the Juniper Berry pub can now be found in Upper Bugle Street. The Austens took boat trips on the River Itchen to see warships being built at Northam and the Gothic ruins of Netley Abbey.

#visitsouthampton

The Dolphin Hotel is where she celebrated her eighteenth birthday and often visited dances in the upstairs rooms. The décor may have changed over the years but you can still stand in the Southampton Mercure Hotel as it is known today and soak up the atmosphere of days gone by.

Walk the QE2 Mile

The QE2 Mile runs through the heart of the city from the Cenotaph down to the waterfront at Town Quay, linking the city’s parks, new Cultural Quarter, shopping High Street, Old Town and historic waterfront. As the most visited part of the city, there will always be something to discover.

Start your walk from Brunswisk Place and take in the delights of some of the city’s prettiest parks – don’t miss the Titanic memorial opposite the Cenotaph (see page 41 for details on the Titanic Trail).

You will pass by the majestic Guildhall, which hosts many of the biggest names in music and comedy. Also in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter you will find Southampton Arts Complex, which includes John Hansard Gallery and the modern masterpieces on view at Solent University’s contemporary art space. In 2016 there will also be a new Performing Arts Centre and City Eye, which runs Southampton Film Week.

Continuing southwards you reach the main shopping thoroughfare with access to The Marlands and WestQuay shopping centres. The Bargate is one of the most distinctive buildings in Southampton and you can pass through its historic arch on the way to the old town. More independent shops can be found in East Street.

Holy Rood church is another distinct landmark as you make your way to Town Quay and the end of the QE2 mile. It was bombed in WW2, the ruin now holds memories you can experience through sounds posts. The 13 tonne anchor from Southampton’s famous cruise liner, QE2 takes pride of place in front of the church which is dedicated to the sailors of the Merchant Navy. As you approach the waterfront and near the end of the QE2 Mile, on your right hand side you will see where archaeologists uncovered the Medieval Mayor’s Wine Vault and the home of Walter le Fleming – the richest man in Southampton at the time and immortalised in a bronze statue on the modern walkway linking the medieval walls close to WestQuay Shopping Centre.

Recharge THOSE BATTERIES

Whatever your reasons for visiting Southampton you may need to recharge those batteries and kick back for a while. Places to do this are ample, whether it’s relaxing in one of the city’s peaceful parks, indulging in one of the many ice cream parlours, or enjoying a warming beverage in one of the coffee houses.

#visitsouthampton - Relaxing in the city, make it your reason to visit If you need to truly unwind then many of Southampton’s hotels offer spa facilities. The Grand Harbour Hotel offers several spa packages in its Health Club, which include luxurious treatments and use of the pool and spa facilities. The Macdonald Botley Park Hotel & Spa is the perfect place to recharge with their candlelit treatment rooms and extensive leisure facilities. You could even partake in some horse-riding and sailing whilst you’re there.

3 great venues to chill and recharge in:

1. Any one of ‘The Lounges’ which offer a home from home vibe: Santo Lounge in Shirley, Trago Lounge in Portswood or Martimo Lounge in Ocean village with waterfront views.

A few of our favourite things

2. The Art House in Above Bar is a community-run, art gallery, bar and Café, with a chilled and inspiring atmosphere. Enjoy lunch, tea, coffee or supper, all of which are freshly prepared on site and mostly organic with a great range of vegan options. 3. Enjoy Afternoon Tea at the Grand Cafe near Oxford Street which was once the city’s grandest hotel used by passengers of the ill fated Titanic. The former Wedgewood Ballroom is now a stunning bar, bistro and restaurant - idea for an afternoon pit stop. Destination marketing @The_MCollective

THE

Cultural Quarter

Already the home to inspiring exhibitions, exciting events and varied cultural offerings, the Cultural Quarter surrounds the Guildhall Square at the heart of the city. It is a hub for a number of successful cultural organisations including the O2 Guildhall Southampton, Southampton City Art Gallery, SeaCity Museum and the Mayflower Theatre. Opening in Autumn 2016, Southampton’s new arts complex will be a stunning visitor attraction at the heart of the city’s already thriving cultural quarter. Home to Nuffield, Southampton’s leading producing theatre company, the John Hansard Gallery, internationally renowned contemporary art gallery and City Eye, Southampton’s inspirational supporters of film culture. This new arts complex will set the standard for the range and quality of arts and culture in the city, presenting inspirational performances, world-class art exhibitions and outstanding resources for filmmakers and creative events for all ages. Spanning two adjacent landmark buildings, framing the Guildhall Square with restaurants, cafés and shops, the arts complex will also be a cultural creative hub for outdoor performances, festivals, digital art projects and large-scale installations.

SHOPPING AND DINING If it’s one thing Southampton isn’t short of that’s shops, cafés, and restaurants.

From Bedford Place at the top end of town, stretching through to Town Quay at the bottom end, there is something to suit every taste and budget.

Shops range from well-known high street names including John Lewis, Next and Marks and Spencers, to independent boutiques, specialist shops and market stalls.

WestQuay and The Marlands shopping centres are home to many of these shops under one roof, with ample parking and good facilities. They make your shopping experience warm, dry and convenient! At The Boutique Village near Millbrook, peruse over 150 independent traders from vintage to handmade products and services. With so much choice you’re bound to need refreshments during your shop, and here’s where you are spoilt for choice! Stopping for coffee and a cake is an essential part of a hard day’s shop, Mettricks is Southampton’s independent tea and coffee house serving great coffee, tea and homemade cakes. With two venues in town already, look out for a new Mettricks coming to Southampton’s Cultural Quarter in early 2016. If it’s a sugar fix you’re after then Southampton’s selection of ice cream bars and pancake houses will give you that extra boost before more shopping or as a welcomed treat afterwards. You can find more details on these sweet venues on page 33! You can mix your shopping and eating experience at Southampton’s markets on a Friday and Saturday from 9am-5pm. Held in the pedestrianised area at the Bargate monument these markets offer a selection of food stalls and general market stalls.

#ReasonTHREE

SERENITY AND THE CITY One of the nicest aspects of Southampton is its location. On the South Coast, it’s clear from the maritime history that Southampton has a close relationship with the sea, but it’s not just the water that gives this city a unique luxury, it also benefits from ample green space.

Mayflower Park offers an idyllic spot to sit and watch the ships go by and on a sunny day is the perfect place for an ice cream. As you travel up through the city there are numerous parks and open green spaces to enjoy a well-earned rest from the hustle and bustle, without having to leave it. With grassy areas and park benches they are the perfect spot for a quiet lunch break.

One of Southampton’s most prominent features is Southampton Common. This large area sits at the North end of the city and includes 326 acres of woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a paddling pool, a children’s play area, a model yachting pond, and a fishing lake. It’s also the venue for Southampton’s Common People Festival, which will be enjoying its second year in May 2016.

Go Ape Southampton Live life adventurously and take on a Tree Top Adventure course like no other, including award winning high ropes, awesome crossings, tunnels, bridges and an epic wind-in-your-face zip wire to finish.

If you venture out of the city centre then Southampton’s transport network can provide you with easy access to the surrounding areas. Treat YOURSELF

Sometimes you just have to treat yourself to something sweet! Whether it’s a hot sunny day and you want an ice cream to cool you down, or if it’s raining outside and a comforting hot waffle covered in chocolate sauce is the only way to make you feel better...Southampton has got it covered! With two venues in town, Sprinkles has a mouthwatering range of ice-creams and sorbets from early morning to late at night. Arties Ice Cream Factory in the High Street is where they create 24 flavours on the premises. And, Scoops Gelato in Portswood is a bright and lively dessert parlour with fresh Italian gelato and sorbets, which are hand-made daily on site. If that wasn’t enough, The Marlands recently welcomed its new pancake house - STAKKS! With plenty of savoury delights and sweet treats. If you’re looking gluten free and vegan options check out The Songbird in Bitterne Triangle. This ice cream parlour has a huge selection that includes gluten free and vegan friendly options, it’s also a nut free environment! Destination marketing @The_MCollective

Here for business, visiting friends or waiting to head off on a cruise? Southampton is the gateway to a great day!

On your bike!

Southampton offers so much as a city and it’s green spaces and surrounding parks make a great active day out! Head down to Town Quay where you can pick up the Hythe Ferry to the small village of Hythe. Here you can hire some bikes from Cycle Experience. Once you’ve got your bikes make your way out of the village and before you know it you’ll be in The New Forest! This stunning National Park makes a great day out when you’re in Southampton and fancy a bit of peace and serenity.

An experience to remember

A mere 5 mile cycle from Hythe and you’ll find yourself in the picturesque village of Beaulieu. Here you’ll find Fairweather’s Garden Centre, home to Steff’s Kitchen, where you can enjoy a well deserved coffee and cake break!

Keep your active day going and pop in to New Forest Activities on Beaulieu High Street and you could enjoy paddling on the Beaulieu River or Archery in the forest (pre-booking recommended). You could find some great walk-in deals available and don’t forget your voucher on page 27. Whilst in the village Beaulieu’s boutique shops are great locations to get some unique gifts and keepsakes from your visit.

An afternoon to remember!

34

It’d be silly to visit Beaulieu and not head to the International Motor Museum and visitor attraction! Spend your afternoon here at Beaulieu, one inclusive ticket provides access to The National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, Palace House & Gardens, Beaulieu Abbey, and unlimited rides on the Monorail & Veteran Bus; certainly plenty to keep you entertained! #visitsouthampton - the gateway to adventure! Finish up the day...

Alternatives!

Transport: Not keen on cycling? The New Forest Tour runs seasonally providing a hop-on-hop-off bus service around the forest, you can pick this up from right in front of the Hythe ferry. For more information on routes and timetables visit www.thenewforesttour.info

There’s nothing quite like watching those big ships when they are in port. Mayflower Park is the place where you can get up close to the liners with special events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the naming and arrival of new ships.

s

From Town Quay, you can pick up the Hythe Ferry to the waterside village of Hythe via the famous Victorian pier and the world’s oldest working pier train. The promenade is among the best vantage points for viewing the ships.

Weston Shore looks out across Southampton Water and is a popular site to watch the shipping movements and also provides a great start for walks along the water’s edge. Further east is Royal Victoria Country Park where the beach at the park offers an ideal vantage point for viewing cruise liners before they pass Hamble Point and head towards the Solent.

On the opposite side of the water you have Calshot spit. Stuck out into the Solent, the beach at Calshot is a great spot to wave off those lucky cruise passengers. Maritime life in Southampton isn’t just about the big ships, however. The city’s waterfront developments and marinas offer wonderful opportunities to sit back and relax and watch the sumptuous yachts go by.

Ocean Village has outstanding recreational facilities for yachtsmen as well as trendy bars and restaurants beside the water. Further upstream on the River Itchen is Shamrock Quay, a bustling marina steeped in history.

The pride of the White Star line began her ill-fated journey from Southampton taking hundreds of local residents with her as members of her crew. 2012 marked the centenary of the tragic sinking of the ship and it was the year SeaCity Museum opened its doors to the public.

Walk the Titanic trail

Southampton will forever be associated with the name of RMS Titanic.

START your Titanic trail at SeaCity Museum and explore the city’s historic connections with the ship.

When you leave the museum, head for the Above Bar Street and ornate Titanic Engineer Officers’ Memorial in East Park (opposite the Cenotaph) unveiled in 1914 featuring a seven-foot high angel.

Head down the QE2 Mile to Holy Rood Church and see the Titanic Crew Memorial, which was paid for by the subscriptions of friends and family of the crew.

Oxford Street is where to head to next, passing the former Sailors Home (now Salvation Army Centre). Stop in the Grapes pub which dates to the 1850’s. Four members of the Titanic’s crew, including three brothers named Slade, famously stayed here too long on the morning of the ship’s departure. They arrived at the quayside as the ship was about to leave and were refused entry. Close by is the impressive South Western House, formerly a hotel where many of the wealthy guests stayed the night before the Titanic sailed. The Grand Cafe is situated in this historic building and a perfect stop for refreshments and to soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era.

Finally, walk done Canute Road to the Canute chambers, the former headquarters of the White Star Line, and see where the Southampton families anxiously gathered to await news of their loved ones. The full trail can be downloaded at www.discoversouthampton.co.uk

Walk the Old Town

If you want to build up your appetite and see a little bit of the city before nightfall, why not take a stroll through the Old Town. The Old Town has over 90 listed buildings and more than 30 ancient monuments, with medieval wine vaults, an array of medieval churches, and fine Georgian houses and hotels. START out from the section of city wall near to West Quay on Castle Way and walk south until you reach a turning on the left called Simnel Street. Follow the road and turn Bugle Street where you will see the striking black and white exterior of the Tudor House Museum opposite St Michael’s Church. Carry on down the street admiring the architecture of some of Southampton’s most attractive houses. You will see the Duke of Wellington pub on your left (in the summer it is a vision with an abundance of hanging baskets). Opposite the pub is Westgate Street follow this down and see the historic Cloth Hall. Cut through Westgate and turn right past the Pig in the Wall and follow the route back to where you started close by WestQuay Shopping centre.

Southampton hosts a number of festivals and music events throughout the year. From small intimate events to larger scale festivals.

In 2015 Common People had its debut on Southampton Common, with headliners Fat Boy Slim and Grace Jones. Organised by Bestivals Rob da Bank, Common People looks forward to it’s second year on the 28th-29th May 2016 where city-born Craig David will be headlining. SMILEfest takes place throughout March and is managed by the students and staff from Southampton Solent University. It’s month long programme includes live music performances and special club nights across the city.

Southampton Common also plays host to Southampton’s retro festival “Let’s Rock Southampton”! This 80’s music inspired festival takes place on the 9th July with 80’s favourites such as Rick Astley and Jason Donovan performing.

In July, Hoglands Park welcomes the Southampton Mela Festival which is an annual celebration of Modern and Traditional Asian Culture.

BASE FOR EXPLORATION

Southampton is a great base for discovering South Hampshire where family attractions, national parks and waterside villages are waiting to be discovered.

Enjoy shopping, local architecture and Romsey Abbey in the beautiful Market Town of Romsey, just ten miles north of Southampton and home to Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and the family theme park, Paultons Park featuring the popular Peppa Pig Theme Park.

Only fifteen miles west of Southampton is the New Forest, a national park of open heath, ancient woodlands and plenty of family attractions such as Exbury Gardens with its Steam Railway, New Forest Activities with a host of great things do in the forest including canoeing and kayaking on the Beaulieu River, and the New Forest Wildlife Park offering a lovely family day out.

On the banks of the Beaulieu River, discover the 18th century village of Buckler’s Hard, where ships for Nelson’s Navy were built. Also worth a visit is the National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, Palace House and Beaulieu Abbey. Take a Red Funnel ferry or the Red Jet to the Isle of Wight for a day visit or relaxing break. The stunning island destination is a short distance from Southampton with unspoilt scenery and a wealth of family attractions including Dinosaur Isle, Britain’s first purpose built dinosaur museum and visitor attraction.

#visitsouthampton - For 10 weeks from Saturday 16th July 2016 a zeal of Marwell’s Zany Zebras will gallop through the streets of Southampton creating a fun family friendly trail for all to enjoy!

IT’S A

student LIFE

With two Universities in the heart of the city, Southampton is well equipped for student life. It has recently been revealed to be the most economical city in England in which to study, according to the NatWest Student Living Index 2015.

With a huge amount of shops, restaurants and bars, Southampton offers great employment opportunities whilst living in the city. Being home to two Universities means term-time jobs are common and flexible for students. It of course can’t all be about work and Southampton’s nightlife provides an economic solution to letting your hair down! With a wide selection of student bars and dedicated student nights, the city caters for a good night out on a student income. If a night on the town isn’t what you’re looking for, then its music venues and late night cafes are the perfect places to hang out with friends. Cost effective and with so much to offer, Southampton is a great city for student living!
