History in the City >>

A fascinating past Southampton’s skyline is rich and varied with architectural styles encompassing everything from traditional turrets to minimalist modern. It was the Romans who first established a settlement, while the Saxons and Normans also left their mark. Learn about the people who have passed through the city in the Southampton: Gateway to the World exhibition at the new Sea City Museum; from Roman traders bringing new merchandise, Saxon settlers setting up homes or Huguenot Protestants seeking refuge. During the Victorian period, the port of Southampton grew and the celebrated White Star shipping line moved its headquarters to the city. It was from here that RMS Titanic set sail on her ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. The story of Titanic and Southampton’s maritime heritage can be enjoyed at the new Sea City Museum.

Old Town, new ideas Southampton’s Old Town district is just to the south of the city centre. This magical part of the city boasts famous residents and visitors including the Pilgrim Fathers, William the Conqueror, Jane Austen and even Shakespeare is understood to have visited the Dolphin Hotel. Book on a famous ghost tour of the Old Town at night to reveal the spirit of the area! By day, the Old Town is truly remarkable, capturing the essence of the Tudor period through a wealth of original architecture and attractions. The 800 year old Bargate stands as a prestigious entrance to the Old Town. Originally built as the main gateway to the medieval city, the building has been given a new lease of life as the Bargate Monument Gallery. 8

Southampton has over 60 monuments s and 450 listed building

The 15th century Tudor House and Garden, is a museum not to be missed with a unique exhibition that uncovers 500 years of history and a magical Tudor garden with a cafe and shop. The Vaults open to the public during the annual Heritage Days in September and provide an insight into the true scale of the city’s boundaries. Surviving two world wars, the Old Town bears the scars, particularly at the site of the Holy Rood Church. A recent makeover as part of the QE2 Mile development has made this area even more of a landmark. While you take in the incredible history around you, why not stop for a quiet drink or lunch? The Old Town is home to a fantastic range of restaurants and cafes, housing the two oldest pubs in the city, the Duke of Wellington and the Red Lion.

Did you know? All the Kings and Queens of England, from Henry II to our present Queen, have passed through the central arch of Southampton’s Bargate? Or that author Jane Austen lived in the town’s Castle Square during Southampton’s ‘Spa’ period and spent many happy hours dancing in the Dolphin Hotel? To find out more about the city’s heritage be sure to join a Southampton Tourist Guides Association Walk and bring the past to life with fascinating historical facts. Find out more about the walks by visiting www.stga.org.uk or to book a tour call 023 8057 1858 (during office hours)

Attractions in the City >>

Days out in Southampton Southampton is a great city with a variety of attractions to suit the young, old and all budgets. There is plenty for all the family to enjoy from museums, open spaces and art galleries to the general hustle and bustle of a vibrant city. The QE2 Mile runs through the heart of the city from the Cenotaph down to the waterfront at Town Quay, linking the city’s parks, new Cultural Quarter, shopping High Street, Old Town and historic waterfront. As the most visited part of the city, there will always be something to discover.

What to look out for on the QE2 Mile: Start your walk from Brunswisk Place and take in the delights of some of the city’s prettiest parks – don’t miss the Titanic memorial. You will pass by the majestic Guildhall which hosts many of the biggest names in music and comedy and check out the modern masterpieces on view at Solent University’s contemporary art space. » Continuing southwards you reach the main shopping thoroughfare with access to The Marlands and West Quay shopping centres. » The Bargate is one of the most distinctive buildings in Southampton and you can pass through its historic arch on the way to the old town. More independent shops can be found in East Street. » Holyrood church is another distinct landmark as you make your way to Town Quay and the end of the QE2 mile. » As you approach the waterfront and near the end of the QE2 Mile, on your right hand side you will see where archaeologists uncovered the Medieval Mayor’s Wine Vault and the home of Walter le Fleming – the richest man in Southampton at the time and immortalised in a bronze statue on the modern walkway linking the medieval walls close to WestQuay Shopping Centre. With such a variety of activities around Southampton you may struggle to fit everything in, so we’ve put together some itineraries to help you plan your day. 12

Sea green... Discover Southampton common

On the Titanic Trail Southampton will forever be associated with the name of RMS Titanic. The pride of the White Star line began her ill-fated journey from Southampton taking hundreds of local residents with her as members of her crew. 2012 marked the centenary of the tragic sinking of the ship and it was the year Sea City Museum opened its doors to the public. Start your Titanic trail at the museum and explore the city’s historic connections with the ship. When you leave the museum, head for Above Bar Street and the ornate Titanic Engineer Officers Memorial in East Park (opposite the Cenotaph). Oxford Street is where to visit next. Why not stop for some refreshment at The Grapes pub and drink in the atmosphere. Four members of the Titanic’s crew, including three brothers named Slade, stayed here too long on the morning of the ship’s departure. They arrived at the quayside as the ship was about to leave and were refused entry.

Close by is the impressive South Western House, formerly a hotel where many of the wealthy guests stayed the night before Titanic sailed. The Grand Café, situated in this historic building, is the perfect place for lunch and you can soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era. Finally walk down Canute Road to Canute Chambers, the former headquarters of the White Star Line, and see where Southampton families anxiously gathered to await news of their loved ones.

13

Attractions in the City >>

Day of Discovery Southampton has a wealth of art and a great place to start your journey or discovery is the City Art Gallery, housing a permanent collection of over 3,500 works of international reputation, spanning six centuries. Also on offer are the fabulous John Hansard Gallery at University of Southampton and look out for the Millais Gallery off-site projects run by Solent University. For lunch, why not visit the Old Town and enjoy lunch at one of the cafes or pubs. While you are there take a look at the Tudor House Museum and Garden. Alternatively you could take a guided walk along the city walls. For those of you wishing to visit the charming Medieval Merchant’s House at 58 French Street, contact English Heritage for opening times. Oceans celebrates Southampton’s maritime heritage with exhibitions packed with rare artefacts, photos and memorabilia. It also provides a valuable information resource for cruise passengers and other visitors to the city. Crucially Oceans has a baggage hold facility so you don’t have to be weighed down with luggage during your visit and scrumptious cream teas can be enjoyed at the adjoining Britannia tea rooms.

Following dinner at one of the many superb restaurants in Oxford Street, you may wish to watch an international film at the Harbour Lights cinema or sample great theatre at The Hub Theatre at City College. For classical, jazz, folk and world music a visit to the Turner Sims concert hall at University of Southampton is a must. The Guildhall is one of the South’s largest venues and has hosted some of the biggest names in music from Pink Floyd and David Bowie in the 70s to The Killers and The Kaiser Chiefs in more recent times. 14

Green Credentials Southampton is the greenest city in Southern England. Located near to the Old Town are seven formal parks that were originally common land where the medieval townsfolk grew crops and grazed their animals and they were converted into elegant parks in the early Victorian period. These Grade II listed parks are now fully restored and have their traditional bandstand, rose gardens, elaborate fountains and imposing sculptures that evoke the city's history and civic pride.

The Common The huge 326 acre Common, just a short walk from the city centre, is a haven for flora and fauna and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The rest of the Common is home to an abandoned race course and the site of the gallows, the Victorian lake and the country's deepest artesian well.

The Hawthorns Located on the south east corner of Southampton Common, The Hawthorns Centre is a wonderful biodiversity centre. Great for families and those wishing to learn more about Southampton’s abundant wildlife, you’ll find out how humans and nature can work together and what a rich natural tapestry we have around us. Interactive displays help you discover more about the creatures and plants that live on the Common. Entry to The Hawthorns is free and the grounds are open from Monday to Friday 11am - 3pm. The Hawthorns Café is open every day from 8am to 6pm including bank holidays.

Watch the ships go by Mayflower Park is the place where you can get up close to the liners with special events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the naming and arrival of new ships. From Town Quay, you can pick up the Hythe Ferry to the waterside village of Hythe via the famous Victorian pier and the world’s oldest working pier train. The promenade is among the best vantage points for viewing the ships. Weston Shore looks out across Southampton Water and is a popular site to watch the shipping movements and also provides a great start for walks along the water’s edge. Further east is Royal Victoria Country Park where the beach at the park offers an ideal vantage point for viewing cruise liners before they pass Hamble Point and head towards the Solent.

The Hythe Ferry passes alongside the QEII Terminal offering a unique and up close experience of the magnificent liners.
