FOURTH QUARTER 2015

HILTON HEAD CONCOURS CONQUERED BY PORSCHE The cream always rises to the top. Porsche owners know what a great marque we’ve chosen. But, it’s always gratifying to see others recognize the cool factor our cars carry with them everywhere they go.

some. Starting with a Friday evening dinner at the Chart House at Skull Creek, 23 members and friends gathered for a super dinner on the waterfront. Look at Helen’s impressive entree!

At the 2015 Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance, we were well represented. At the end of the day on Saturday, a couple who has been part of our group for many years before they moved to Florida, Valerie and Donald Bennett, walked away with a Special Show Award and the People’s Choice Award! As the name implies, the People’s Choice award is voted on by the attendees. Valerie and Don’s 911 wowed the crowd and was impeccably detailed. A great contingent of Three Rivers Region members enjoyed the weekend and then

Cont’d from front cover The Westin Hotel and for the very first time, the Hilton Head Airport for a Aero Expo. The layout of the Concours was convenient to the host hotel and many condos nearby. With exhibitors throughout the show field, there was something for everyone. And right behind the Porsche exhibit, the trams running over to the airport were leaving all throughout the day. Sixteen unique aircraft were featured and another seventeen automobiles were paired with them for a unique combination. BMW was featured with thirteen representative examples of the marque from 1928 through the 2015 BMW i8. Saturday night was Halloween. A fun party was held over at the Port Royal Golf Club condos, complete with crazy costumes and a tasty buffet. Sunday was the official Concours, with a totally different show field of specially invited vehicles. This event is always a good time. Be sure to join us next year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We’ve almost made it through our first year as the Three Rivers Region. It’s been a great experience and we can build on our solid foundation for many years to come. Our membership has doubled from the numbers we had at the charter in January, 2015. Some members are transfers from other regions and some members are new to PCA. As we continue to grow, we will have more opportunities to offer activities that a larger treasury

will allow, such as auto cross, racing, DE, etc.

Medical Circle, West Columbia SC 29169.

Next year, we have ideas for many events and activities to appeal to the different aspects of our membership. Of course, it will be so much better if we have your input! We are having a board meeting January 11, 2016 at 6:30p to plan out the new year. You are welcome to attend and give your comments to the board. The meeting will be held at the Real Estate School of SC, 101

I’m really disappointed that we weren’t able to overcome the rain on either date to hold our Oktoberfest. We hope to get out to Dennis Lambries’ property next year for an outing before next October! Finally, I want to thank everyone that came together to help our member who lost so much in the flood. We will continue to help this member as needed.

DRIVE YOUR 356 DAY

IN HONOR OF FERRY PORSCHE For the third, time members of The Porsche 356 Registry have enjoyed a “Drive Your 356 Day” gathering in the faux German town of Helen, Ga. We stayed at the beautiful Tanglewood Lodge and Cabins located on Hwy 356. Fred Coward and Dr. Bob Stonerock from Charleston, South Carolina drove to Columbia Wednesday to stay with me so we could get an early start Thursday morning. Well, that didn’t work so well! The starter on Fred’s 1961 356 B coupe broke on first crank. For the next five days, we all became the Bendix Push Start crew. Dr. Gary Raymond led in his blue 1965 356 C coupe, Fred in his 356 and me in my 1962 356 hardtop coupe followed. The weather was gorgeous all weekend. Thursday evening we lined up 80 plus Porsche 356s in the meadow beside the lodge for a big screen drive in theater movie. Friday morning we organized for the trip to Atlanta, Georgia for the Porsche Experience Center. Leaving Helen, Georgia around 7:30am, we were able to catch some of Atlanta’s famous morning rush hour traffic. The Porsche Experience Center is incredible! We spent most of the day there. They treated us to a wonderful lunch. They provided us with a guided tour through the simulator lab, heritage center, classic gallery, business center, and drivers development track. What a beautiful sight to see all of our 356s parked in front of this state of the art building. Their enthusiastic employees came out to ask us questions and enjoy the 50-60 year old cars. At this point it dawned on me that the real Porsche experience for me is being able to own one of these cars, to feel like I am part of this family, the heritage, the history and the dream.

petal in and out, big trucks and mean people. About two hours later, we had made enough progress to see some clear roads to the mountains. Friday night we relaxed around the lodge pavilion, had a bon fire and grilled brats with plenty of BS and Porsche talk. Saturday we started with a swap meet and then were on our own for our preferred destination drive of the day. That evening, we had live Blue Grass/Appalachian music, bonfire, and a pig picking feast. Sunday morning we lined up for the great “Drive Your 356 Day” drive to the Yoneah Mountain Vineyards and enjoyed a five star luncheon. It was an absolutely gorgeous setting for our cars. Sunday evening found us back at the lodge where we began preparing for the early morning departure home. It was hard saying goodbye to some of the finest people you would ever want to meet. These folks drive their vintage cars from all over the country. Tom Olsom drove his 356 C coupe from Washington State. George Dunn and wife drove from St. Petersburg, Florida and then headed out from Helen, Georgia to Monterey, California for Rennsport V in their 1965 C Cabriolet. Fred Coward, Gary Raymond, and I landed in Columbia, South Carolina Monday afternoon. It was the ultimate Porsche experience! I must give tribute to the organizers of this weekend. George Bryant, Evans, Georgia, Frank Hood, St. Petersburg, Florida, and Leonard Scrantz, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. There is just no substitute!

We were all on our own for the drive back to Helen, Georgia. We planned to leave by 2:00pm to get ahead of the Friday afternoon traffic. Well, guess what: bumper to bumper, clutch

See you on the road, Bruce Edge

RADICALLY REDEFINED “I was thrilled,” said Tracey McDaniels Miller as she described being a part of the Columbia Museum of Art’s two opening exhibits: Georgia O’Keefe: Her Carolina Story and Independent Spirits: Women Artists

“OUR POSITION AS CONTRIBUTING SPONSOR IS AN HONOR.”

of South Carolina. “Our position as contributing sponsor is an honor to be associated with an artist that redefined herself escaping the

perception of her prior work to find her own voice on the canvas.” Much like the CMA, Porsche’s artist in residence was showcased that evening on October 15th as teh Panamera S e-Hybrid: Thrilling Contradiction. Without apology or compromise, the dream of the sports car with everday usability has arrived. Porsche radically redefined the concept of the four door sports car with the Panamera S e-Hybrid. This parallel plug-in hybrid can be powered alone by electric machine (95hp) or combustion engine (333hp) or these units can work harmoniously together highlighting efficiency and sporty performance only Porsche can create at a combined 416hp.

The team at McDaniels Porsche enjoyed speaking with attendees and offering VIP presentations of the Panamera S e-hybrid. “I think my favorite saying I heard all night was, ‘I’ll take two!’” said General Sales Manager Gerald Sitton, a veteran of the McDaniels Automotive Group and avid Porsche enthusiast. “We were so happy to be a part of the event and celebrate the evening with so many friends of the museum, many who we know. Plus, we were blessed to touch base with people who had been affected by the flood and see they made it through with their health and families intact.” The exhibit will run through Sunday, January 10th, 2016 at the Columbia Museum of Art, located at 1515 Main Street in downtown Columbia, SC.

FUN AT EURO AUTO FESTIVAL IN GREER The Euro Auto Festival is a terrific car show held every year in Greenville, South Carolina. It is sponsored by BMW and historically it has been held at the BMW factory/Zentrum. This year was the 20th anniversary and the event was held on Saturday at the Embassy Suites Golf Resort in Greenville. Three Rivers Region members attending the event were: Kathy and Rock Webb, Helen and Dick Lane, Donna and Bruce Edge, Connie and Charlie Cashwell, Marsha and Ray Everett, Ed and Candy coon, Terry Kiesler and daughter. We drove up Friday in order to attend the Friday evening welcoming event and enjoyed seeing many of our car friends. Dick, Ed, Bruce, Terry and I had entered our cars in the show just for fun, not expecting any

recognition, considering the 400 plus cars there.

Lure. A splendid time was had by all.

The show had an amazing variety of cars with every marque I have ever known. Have you ever seen a Sunbeam Rapier or a TVR? It was a great show.

On Monday morning following the event, I received an email listing the winners of the various classes (which included classes just for Porsches). I was surprised to see that Ed and Terry had won their classes and I had placed second in my class.

Sunday morning, a group of Three Rivers Region members drove up to Little Switzerland for lunch. The ride up 226-A from Marion was awesome. (I personally like it more than the Dragon. Just as curvy without the traffic.) After lunch, we headed north up the Parkway to the Linville Winery for some wine tasting. The Reisling was excellent, so we had a bottle. We then proceeded back down 221 for our return to Columbia via Batcave/Chimney Rock/Lake
