Number two: we want you to remember something important--high school is just one scene of your life. One scene can change the whole movie, or one scene could be insignificant to the outcome. It might be crazy emotional, or it might just be comic relief. For some it may be the scene where the parents get divorced, the grandmother dies, the boy falls in love

Amy Hillberry I feel I have been slacking with my wisdom-giving lately. So before I leave this building of knowledge I want to give you all a few words of advice that I wished I would of known at the beginning of high school. I hope it’s obvious enough. 1. Stay true to yourself and your beliefs, no matter what the circumstance. 2. Use every opportunity to your advantage. 3. You want to go out with that girl or that guy? Go ask them out. 4. Afraid to get back with your ex because they hurt you emotionally? Talk to them about it. If it works out then it’s for the best, if not then at least you tried. 5. Go outside your comfort zone to dance in public or sing karaoke. High school is the perfect time for this because people will forget it anyway. 6. If a friend or sibling is having a bad day, comfort them. Even a

Freshmen year there’s these two friends Connor and Jacob. Connor is the confident middle school athlete who makes the high school football team. He’s a bit of a jerk. Jacob is the shy, nice guy who doesn’t talk, but when he does everyone listens. Once they made it to high school Jacob made the choice to try his best and get good grades Connor made somewhat of an effort so he didn’t get kicked off the football team, A year goes by and the two are sure they’ll always be friends Sophomore year, Connor has made the choice to ignore his friend, and lie to his parents whenever he goes to hang out with the guys on varsity to drink or take drugs. Jacob is the guy who can barely get up the courage to talk to a girl but somehow has a girlfriend. Jacob has learned the truth about Connor and is trying to help his friend. Their friendship is being tested. It’s junior year. After winning the state championship Connor decides to go to a party. He gets so drunk that on his way home a cop

smile or hug can make their day better. 7. Carpe Diem 8. Be slow to get angry and slow to speak. Listening is a very valuable tool. If I could have done high school all over again I would have followed these rules to the tee. High school is not a time to sit in the corner and be afraid. Let out your personality, because if you are waiting until college, you will be very disappointed. In any circumstance, with any outcome, I encourage students to remain confident in themselves and with every decision they make because regrets are easy to make and hard to redo. So I ask you to learn from my screw ups and at least dwell on my ideas if they are epic enough for you. Good luck and have fun.
pulls him over, being a former graduate of Connor’s high school and a former football hero himself he lets him off with a warning and a ticket. “After all one bad choice won’t ruin his future,” he thinks. Jacob on the other hand decides to go and hang out with his girlfriend. His girlfriend tells him she’s pregnant and that the baby isn’t his. Somehow word gets out and rumors spread at school. The shame is so great that his girlfriend moves away without telling him, the worst part is that one of the people who spread these rumors is Connor. A year goes by and the two don’t even know each other anymore. It’s senior year. Jacob is the guy who lost his girlfriend due to immature gossip, and is still trying to make college plans. Connor is the star athlete who is also addicted to drugs and alcohol. Connor has a full-ride scholarship to the university of his choice that is until a teammate catches him taking drugs and turns him in. Connor doesn’t graduate. Instead he goes to jail, then rehab for the next couple of years. Jacob graduates and is offered a scholarship to Oklahoma University. A year goes by and the two are no longer friends. This story isn’t new. It happens every day. All that changes is the names. We’re all someone in this story. We’re either the good guy or the bad guy. We all have friends like Connor or Jacob the thing that determines who we are is the choices we make. In high school you will make choices just like these or others that have similar consequences. I hope you make the right ones.

As conceited as it may be, I’ve always thought of myself with high regard. People always told me what a great person I was, that I was wise beyond my years with a great talent for writing. At first I took these compliments with humility. But eventually I let them go to my head, and my self-confidence turned into self-adoration. In my mind, everything I did was greatness. But the reality was far from my imagination. I claimed I was a caring person, yet rarely went out of my way to help anyone but myself. I insisted I was a loyal ally, yet turned on those close to me if it was in my best interests at the time. I thought I was a good friend, yet became so self-absorbed that those close to me began to drift away without my noticing. My family was no longer a source of support for me because I chose to rely on myself and ignore their offers for help. Instead, I treated them like they only existed to house me. The pattern continued and as I kept becoming more and more isolated from my friends, a strange feeling began to set in. It wasn’t loneliness. If anything, I believed my self-confidence was high enough that I didn’t need any friends. I looked at people who turned to friends for help and scoffed. I thought that to rely on anyone but yourself for comfort was a sign of emotional weakness. I guess you could say I was delusional. And while I was busy shutting everyone out, I allowed a few people to slip through my barrier and grow close to me. Out of nowhere, they broke down my walls and made me take a close look at myself. But I think why I was acting like I didn’t need anyone in my life, part of me desperately wanted a change in direction. I just needed a push, and things happened to eventually push me back into the right state of mind. By isolating myself, I’d been hurting everyone around me. I never bothered to consider that the people I was shutting out were concerned about it. They were my staffers who looked up to me and

We’re sitting in a circle staring at each other, playing Apples to Apples and thinking about what the next adjective could be. The hand reaches for the green card and it is flipped over. The word is “memorable.” A smile curls the tips of my lips up. I have the perfect card. I look down at the red apples already surrounding the green one, as people put in their luck to win this round. I hold my card closely and think of how truly memorable “my life” is. Well, to be honest there are only a few moments in my life that are truly memorable: my parents’ divorce, the first black belt I received, that trophy I won at a horse show, or even that first day of high school. High school. I dread digging up the memories buried of us acting immature on those morning bus rides. We used to throw stuff around and write on the windows. I would say that freshman and sophomore years were two of the most awkward years I’ve had during my time at Marcus High School. These two years seemed to fly by and before I knew it, I was a junior, taking exams and looking towards college. I would say that out of all four years junior year was definitely the most interesting.

Patrick Iversen relied on me for advice. They were my church group that had once regarded me as a future leader and a brother in Christ. They were my family that was about to send me off to college. They were my friends I had grown so close to over the years. I finally understood how much my self-centeredness had hurt these people. I had forgotten the feeling of helping others, and so didn’t realize that these people actually wanted to help me when I needed it. My desire to isolate myself before college wasn’t because I didn’t care, but that I was afraid of the pain of leaving my friends and family. I had figured it was easier to leave everyone behind without a thought. I was wrong. My family couldn’t be pushed away, though. I think I fell into a trap many seniors walk into. We want to be independent and selfreliant. We want to feel all grown up, and we end up considering our family as the final roadblock to adulthood. The reality is that family is meant to carry you on their shoulders so you can reach maturity, and without them you’ll fall on your face. The same goes for friendship. I recognized that turning to friends in times of need isn’t a sign of weakness but a sign of strength. Ever since I’ve started rebuilding the relationships I had neglected, I’ve become a more confident person, and I’m no longer afraid of leaving people behind when I leave for college. I’m not anywhere close to being done. I still relapse from time to time, but as hard as it is going to be to change for good, I know I’m headed on the right path.
Those long nights of no sleep for fear I would fail my AP classes. The friendships that I thought would last forever were quickly severed, leaving nothing but a burned bridge over raging rapids. It was during the end of junior year that I discovered how quickly something you think will never change can vanish with just a few words and actions. A love triangle caused two of my friends to never speak to each other again. I was stuck in the middle, trying to walk on the tight rope of friendships between the two. However, like war, sides were being picked and soon I was left alone on that tight rope, trying not to fall off. But no matter how well I could try to keep balance, it takes just one simple push or a few words to send me tumbling downwards. One of the friends would sever our relationship. I was heartbroken. But then there came a moment when I realized I couldn’t keep chasing after someone who wanted to leave me behind. You can’t force people to listen to your logic, just as others can’t force you to listen to theirs. It’s a fact in life; you will lose those closest to you. Yes, it hurts, and yes, you will most likely remember it forever, but you must also remember how you moved on. Never let someone hold power over you when all along you hold all the cards for your life. Just as I watched the rest of their cards flutter downward, I smile. The cards they hold and draw may be random, but it is up to them to figure out how to play them. I lay my card face down on the table and watch as the judge slowly flips them over and carefully considers each answer. The winner of this round is….

In 30 years, I wake up in Austin. After kicking off my Egyptiancotton sheets, I survey my apartment. I slowly crawl out of bed and look the LCD alarm clock on my bedside table. Well, I’m late to work again, but I think my boss will understand seeing how it’s my company. Plus, I haven’t missed a single day in two years, a few minutes isn’t so bad. I slowly drag myself out of my comfy bed and drag my feet across my thick wooly carpet and out of the heavy oak door. I make my way through my apartment, overlooking the beautiful afternoon Austin skyline and walk up to the refrigerator. A frozen wind greets my unshaven face and as I scower my fridge for something to eat in a hurry. As my hand probes the plastic box, I discover prey as my hand grazes an unopened package of pop tarts. Victory! I grab the silver package and strip it away to reveal the thin, red frosted pastry. As I devour the food, I turn on my 3D television in the middle of the living room, which begins to project the CNN studio across my apartment. I walk over to my iDesk, an electronic desk with touch screen interactivity. Press the power button and a large Apple symbol appears in the center. As it starts up, I see my dozens of icons on the side, each containing one of my books I’ve written ever since I joined DC comics as an editor. At the table, I look up to see a news flash across the screen about Taylor Ross’s and his new movie coming out in the next year. The former USC professor is now making a new movie about one of the various books he’s written. I smile at my success. I open a video channel on the iDesk. Almost immediately I’m greeted with the scowling

Well, I apologize to my fellow seniors that I cannot come up with a senior column. After hours of trying, thinking, and sitting, I simply cannot think of what to write. So today, I am going to write about writer’s block, and my personal experience with it. A psychologist would probably compare writer’s block to the tip-of-the-tongue sensation, which is when you know what you want to say, but cannot think of the word for it. Writers know better. Writer’s block is not something on the tip-of-the-tongue, which is more representative of not seeing something clearly, but having pure knowledge of what it is. Writer’s block is getting lost in a maze of thought. Writer’s block is caused by the fact that I was placed on a waitlist at my college of choice, and now I have to wait another month before my college plans solidify. Writer’s block is caused by the fact that my Uncle has been in the hospital three or four times in the past few months for heart-related trauma, which runs in the family. Writer’s block is a literal barrier in the way of creativity – a wall, a distraction, a detour, that keeps one’s train of thought from making that final stop. I guess you could say writer’s block has a lot to do with outside distractions. Everything else other than the task at hand becomes a distraction. I mean, like my desk here. One leg is shorter than the others, and I can’t seem to keep the thing from wobbling. You’d think my family would be able to get even desks, right? How am I

face of my assistant. He tells me I’m late and that my meeting with my writers was ten minutes ago. In an instant ten different screens show up on my desk, with ten different faces in each. They all look at me, my salt n’ pepper hair sticking straight up in the air and my face groggily sagging. After the initial shock of my appearance, they begin to barrage me with questions and concerns. I silence them and we slowly begin to start to work though our story lines for this week in the books that are under my title, which is still under DC Comics. My writers coordinate canon, character statuses and where they should go from here. As we finish, we all get to work on our stories. And my legacy continues. This is my future. It’s not something that may happen, it’s not something that could happen, it’s something that’s going to happen. Average people go out into the real world thinking that they are good, and that is enough. In reality they aren’t good enough and they are crushed by others willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. If someone wants something, they can’t take no for an answer. And I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t plan on failing.

These columns are usually a force of great enthusiasm and passion – something that lately, I have had trouble finding. So, now, every time I become distracted for a moment, it becomes another hole in the dam that keeps my thoughts together. Oh, sorry, my dog just walked in the room. What do you want, puppy? I guess nothing. Y’know, my dogs are the prettiest dogs ever. Seriously. Collies are the best. What dog can compare to Lassie, with her hair blowing in the wind? Fun fact, the dog that played Lassie was actually a male collie. Dangit! I digress. Gah! Writer’s block! I’ve gotta come up with an actual topic. Lets see, I could write about how I’ll miss the senior class naw, too sappy. I could write about the bright future ahead of the class of 2010, but we all die when 2012 comes around so, that’s out. I could write about stupidity and other things that aggravate me, but that won’t make it through. Actually, I’m gonna take a little break, play a little Street Fighter and come back refreshed. GOSH! SO MANY KEN PLAYERS! EVERYONE IS ABLE TO DRAGON PUNCH, YOU JERKS! Sorry, but I didn’t exactly get refreshed. Actually, I didn’t even win one game, mainly because everyone was that loser Ken. I mean, how difficult is it to hit forward, down, down-forward punch? Not hard at all. Learn to play. Oh, gosh, I am running out of room here. Need to focus. Jumping jacks! Those will help me focus. One, two, one, two, one, two... Now I’m out of breath. Whew. Man, that was exhausting. I obviously need to get active more. No! Focus! How does one focus? It seems to be quite a complex thing to me. Who is even able to focus successfully? Not me, I guess. Oh no, this is the end. Uh, good luck senior class! Have fun in college! So lame.
