The Marquee Seniors Class of 2020,

These past few months have been unfair and unkind. Although we have been robbed of our last semester as Marauders, this will not define our future. What will define us is the strength and determination we have found within ourselves during this period. These uncertain times have united us all through unique, universal experiences. During our time together, we’ve also shared many other experiences and memories, including those influenced by music and the emotions it creates. So, in honor of this year’s senior class, “The Marquee” has commemorated our high school career through song. Throughout this issue, songs and playlists can be found to help us look back on the past four years. Congratulations to our graduation seniors! May we continue to create great, new memories in our promising futures.

Sincerely,

Sam Thornfelt

“To my wonderful seniors, I have missed seeing you in my room these past few weeks! I will miss you and your crazy antics. I hope that your time in Latin and JCL gave you good memories (and some excellent grammar and vocabulary skills!) I wish you all the best as you go out into the world. I will always be here for you!” With love, Magistra Santos

“Dear Class of 2020... as Bob Dylan once opined, The Times, They Are A-Changin’, and for you guys, change did come indeed. We do live in interesting times and your graduating class is surely one of the all-time winners for uniqueness, if nothing else. We in the Western World tend to believe that the Chinese word for “crisis” has a double meaning, signifying both “danger” and “opportunity” respectively… So to the class of 2020, what say you? Are you going to view yourself as the graduating class known for seeing only danger… or the graduating class known for seeing opportunity? The choice is up to you to decide.” Mr. Kelly senior edition

“You people are incredible! What a fun year we had together! I will always cherish the memories we made. Thank you so much for giving everything you have to the student section this year! You all have left a legacy of school spirit that will live on long after you leave these halls. Keep being amazing! To LOGAN STRAUSS - You have made me such a proud mama! I am so going to miss your surprise visits and seeing your sweet, smiling face in these halls. LOVE YOU SO MUCH! -Mom” Ms. Strauss

The comparative degree

Samantha Thornfelt Since I was little, I knew whatever I was going to do would be something that would help others in my community. I thought that the only way to accomplish that was by pursuing a career in the medical field. From elementary school all the way through high school, I imagined myself in many different roles — a veterinarian, a nurse, sometimes even a doctor. When I would tell others about my career plan, they would always positively respond and ensure that I should continue to explore the STEM field. While I knew that I could have some level of success as a STEM major, I never felt a strong passion for it. I did well in science classes and had always found an interest in learning about biological sciences, but I had always known that

what I truly loved was writing. After working on the high school paper for a year, I finally began to realize my love for journalism. I knew that not only was it a way for me to share my work with others, but it also gave me a unique ability of telling others’ stories, as well as informing my community. Halfway into my senior year, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the field for the rest of my life. I decided to apply to the Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT, and was later accepted. While I knew it was much different than my previous one, I was positive that a job in journalism was made for me. When I excitedly began to tell my friends and peers about my new career path, I was met with drastically different reactions. They no longer seemed excited, but confused. The congratulatory smiles on their faces now seemed strained, and for a while I couldn’t figure out why. I finally realized what they were thinking when a classmate’s blunt response caught me off guard. “A liberal arts degree? Good luck making any money with that.” My heart sank. I realized that while I knew the many unique, fulfilling aspects of a liberal arts degree, most do not. Others had only heard the negative stigmas of the field. That all liberal arts majors are nothing but hopeless dreamers and starving artists. That they can never be as successful as STEM majors. I soon became jealous of the many engineering and pre-med majors that sat in my classes. I had once received the same reaction that they had when

“Congratulations to the Marcus High School Class of 2020! I have no doubt that each of you will blaze new and positive paths. I will miss many of you who I had the pleasure of teaching. The only regret is not having these last few Sincerely, days to say goodbye. Do great Mrs. Sistrunk things in the future...and keep in touch!”

16

discussing their future with others. They all received a pat on the back and a “You’ll do great,” whereas all I got was a confused smile and a condescending “Oh. Why that major?” Rather than continue to belittle myself based off of my classmates’ reactions, I began to look at my mother’s career path. After receiving a B.A. in psychology, she decided to work for the state as a social worker. Every day, she worked with at risk children and families that were in need of various services. While it wasn’t a high paying occupation, her job satisfaction was immense, as she got to help those in need. This is what I hope to one day accomplish with my own degree. While a job with a journalism degree may not be as lucrative as one with a medical degree, I know the work I will do will still be important. Whether I become a journalist or a member of a communications team, having the responsibility of informing my community will achieve my lifelong goal of wanting to help others. Just because some in the STEM field may have higher pay than those with liberal arts degrees, it by no means makes them more successful. While a salary is an important aspect of one’s job, I find the most important aspect of success to be the fulfillment of working in what you’re passionate about. Everyone has chosen their path for a reason, so no one should belittle another’s choice based on their own definition of success. Any person can experience their own version of success, no matter the field.

“Congratulations 2020 Seniors! Wishing you the very best in the next chapter of your lives! We know that you will accomplish great things and can achieve anything that you set your mind to.” Mrs. Tarin senior edition

The limit to friendship does not exist

ayra charania It was fourth period, and I was absolutely exhausted. My brain had zero energy to socialize, and I just wanted to nap. Rushing into the AP Calculus BC classroom, my face fell as I realized I barely knew anyone in the room. Being an AP kid for five semesters, I thought I would have at least one friend in the class. I just wanted one person who I could sit down with, complain for a few minutes and mentally nap in front of. However, I knew no one. I claimed an empty table and stared into space as all the other tables began to fill. Finally, I saw a single person I knew. It was someone I hadn’t talked to since eighth grade, but at least I knew them. She came to the table with a friend I never met before. The friend was not completely

exhausted, like me. She was wearing a colorful striped dress with overalls and clunky combat boots, and she had the most shiny and vibrant hair I had ever seen. She was not tired or sleepy. She was so hyper and energetic that she reminded me of Spongebob. I absolutely hated it. She was so peppy, and I could not process it. It was not only the end of a long school day, but we were stuck in calculus. There was nothing fun about integration or infinite series or polar graphs. How was she not ready to go home yet? I never thought that this giant ball of sunshine would eventually become my best friend. Although, it didn’t happen without a few fights. Our most memorable little fight happened during our first group quiz. My group consisted of the girl I hadn’t seen since eighth grade, Little Miss Sunshine and a guy who used to be my lab partner in AP Chemistry. We had done every practice problem we could to prepare, and we were ready to ace the quiz. We breezed through it until we got to the last problem. I became frustrated. I was the only one who was able to figure it out, and I integrated the whole thing by myself. I could do each step except the last one. The last one required me to remember trigonometry, something that I had long forgotten since pre-calculus. I assumed that my other group members could finally contribute and help out with this final step, but I was sorely mistaken. We were all dumbfounded and sat still for 20 minutes trying to figure it

out. I glared angrily at each of my group members, and Little Miss Sunshine finally called me out. “None of us know it, and you being annoyed isn’t going to solve anything,” she said. “Why can’t we just turn it in?” In all my pettiness and anxiety, I refused to turn it in. I checked everyone’s quizzes seven times, to be exact, and did not bring a single paper to our teacher until the bell rang at 3:35 p.m. Truthfully, it made me happy to annoy Little Miss Sunshine, but that eventually became the solid foundation of our friendship. We received a 98 on the quiz, a grade below average according to my identity as a high-achieving Asian. Little Miss Sunshine laughed at my disappointment, reminding me that I still tried my best. This happened many more times because it was truly impossible to make a 100 in AP Calculus BC. At each disappointment, Little Miss Sunshine was there to remind me that I was neurotic. She taught me that trying my best mattered more than whatever grade I received. To my surprise, we ended up going to prom together and keeping in contact through summer. She became the person I would message at 3 a.m. because I felt homesick while I was doing research in Boston. The person I would hug and vent to when college applications became too stressful. The person I looked up to for positive advice. Thank you Chersey Tabios for always believing in me and helping me believe in myself.

“Class of 2020, I wish you all the best as you approach your dreams. It was my honor and privilege to work with many of you in my classes. There are so many that are inspirational, hard-working, and determined. Stay focused on your career path, embrace challenges, Stay in touch, and always remember how much we Mrs. Sultanov love you at Marcus!” senior edition

Not so fairytale

alyssa cheatham High school isn’t the fairytale movies, books and TV shows make you believe it is. That’s a pretty general statement, and I’m sure a lot of us understand that. However, I’ve learned a few tricks that have romanticized my high school career in my own way. One of the pivotal moments in my happiness was sophomore year when I realized that some of my closest friends were toxic to my mental health and I needed to cut them out. Renee, one of my best friends to this day, had been telling me for weeks that certain people around me had been bad mouthing me behind my back, and finally after getting comments

about it from other people, I confronted them. It was hard for me, seeing as I am a people pleaser, but I had to get past my anxiety and do what was best for me. I also realized my sophomore and junior year that just because you aren’t the best at something, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. I’m the third percussionist of my siblings, and my brother was one of those prodigy students who was drumline captain for 3 years, a wind symphony member for 4 years, and a GDYO member for most of high school. But percussion is what he wanted to pursue in life. It isn’t what I’ve ever wanted, and I’ve always spent more time on my academics, as well as writing and drawing skills. It was tough to realize that even though I’m not as good as my brother at percussion, and can’t fulfill all these expectations people have for me. Even if you have a commitment to a group or organization, make sure you spend time doing what you love. Even with percussion, I spent the rest of my elective classes either writing or drawing. Elective classes that may be considered a blow off class by most may become your favorite part of the day. Some of my favorite teachers, and ones I have asked for letters of recommendations, have been those teachers. Also, getting a group of solid friends who you are comfortable with is so important. I didn’t find my group of people until my senior year. I’ve had

“Seniors, my heart is broken to see the year end like this for you. However, you have all proven how resilient you can be in the face of adversity and you will only be made stronger moving forward. I am excited to see everything you will accomplish going forward and the future you will build for our community and society as a whole. Don’t forget to come back and say hi every now and then!”

18

friends all throughout high school, and I’m super close to a few of them, but when in group settings I’ve always been sort of an outcast. A group or organization isn’t always going to bring you your people. I was in percussion for all 4 years and even though I’m friends with a lot of band kids I’m not super close to many. Joining the newspaper was the decision that ended up giving me a friend group. We aren’t the friends who only text either. Before quarantine we hung out almost every weekend and even ended up studying for classes together. Now I video call or Netflix with at least 2 or 3 of them almost every night. Aside from them, I only have a few friends I would consider my best friends High school may not be the amazing four years you expect it to be. The work is hard and finding your friends and yourself makes it extremely lonely at times, but that doesn’t mean all of your time in high school is going to be like that. You may find your group of close friends freshman year and continue to kick it together for the rest of high school or maybe you’ll be more like me and have a hard time finding your place even if you are involved in organizations. Whatever it is, it doesn’t matter how different it is to those movies you oh so wish your teenage years looked like. High school is all about romanticizing your own experiences and making it the best time you can, even if it doesn’t seem fun at the moment.

“I have missed you all so much. I wish you all the best! Please keep in touch. I am here to encourage you along the way Ms. Scarbrough when you need it.”

What can I say?

mckenna cowley I sat down to write my last published work at Marcus High School, my senior column, and I was at a loss. I have no clue what to say about my experience these past four years. At first I thought there wasn’t much to say. Then I thought about my friends. We had late night conversations and talked about our fears and hopes. We ate countless meals together. We were there for each other through heartbreaks, successes and humiliating moments. It’s okay that you tried to hit on the Jersey Mike’s cashier and he didn’t want to talk,

come sit down. Our table is in the corner where he can’t see us; we can laugh about it. I remembered my romantic relationships. I learned about love and loss, emotional maturity and a lack of it. I learned about sharing memories with someone else and being able to reflect on them peacefully, even after a messy breakup. I learned how to argue and work through relationship issues. I learned about heartbreak and that my mom knows exactly how to heal it. Drink some tea, let’s watch “The Real Housewives.” Then I remembered my teachers. I was taught by people who were passionate about learning. I suddenly became invested in Government, Econ and English. Who knew I would care about Algebra II? Some teachers were role models, some were confidants and some were both. Friends for just a moment. I didn’t know how to handle what was going on at home, I needed an adult to give me advice. Friend problems, family problems, they listened. It’s okay, that’s tough, I’m here for you. I couldn’t leave out band. I learned about acceptance. I stood with the other kids in my program, even when it seemed like others didn’t. I learned about leadership and hard work. I pushed through some of my toughest moments, emotionally and physically. I

“Keep precious these memories of your past because they have molded you, have high goals to aim for your amazing future, and most importantly celebrate and enjoy today because it is only here until tomorrow! Love everyday, live every minute!!! Blessings to you Class of 2020!” senior edition

learned about unconditional unity. I was in newspaper my senior year. I reconnected with my love for writing. I looked for and found stories to tell. I reviewed new restaurants in our community. I told the world how to be alone on Valentine’s day. I told the story of a family who faced tragedy. I learned about the importance of journalism. I told my own stories. I was accepted into the Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT. I was united with others through one love for newspaper. When I sat down to write this column, I felt sad and robbed of my senior year. In the beginning, I truly felt like it would be easier to deal with missing the best three months of school if I acted like it was insignificant. In reality, I met some of my best friends. I figured out who I am as a person and what I am good at. I took advice from adults that will have a lasting impact on my life. I grew into an adult with the help of my classmates, friends, teachers, advisors and directors. I would say that I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything, but it will always be disappointing to have to miss the senior breakfast, the prom, and have a different graduation than I had dreamed of. However, I find comfort in the fact that I have grown, learned, loved and been loved so much during these past four years, and those experiences are valid.

The art of mediocrity

renee gomez Mediocrity has always been my strong suit. I’ve never excelled, yet I haven’t failed. In elementary school I didn’t get picked first for dodgeball, but I wasn’t last. Averageness is the perfect disguise for any high school transfer student. I was invisible and invincible, a combination that always let me fit into the background. Though I’d mastered the art of averageness, I was unaware of how intensely I was about to fail. As a middle school drummer, I was fifth or sixth in a class of 12, mathematically mediocre. However, the Marcus drumline isn’t average. They’ve won every competition, they’re the only drumline that marches and they’re the first high school group to perform at TMEA. It’s a constant uphill battle that only stops when your mom lets you quit. Mine did not. Of course, I didn’t know those statistics. I thought that being sub-par in

middle school would make me sub-par in high school. During my first rehearsal, it was apparent that I was wrong. When I entered the auditorium, stage lights illuminated Mr. Wylie, who immediately noticed my presence. Today I know him as my percussion instructor and one of the most terrifying yet inspiring people I know. In that moment he was just terrifying. Suddenly, he flung his arms in the air and waved them around like a plane conductor with orange glowsticks. “Stop! Everybody stop!” he hollered while pointing to me, and I became three inches shorter. “This is Renee, everybody say ‘Hi, Renee!’” About 30 sweaty kids grumbled an unenthusiastic “Hi, Renee.” This was fine with me. The less attention I got, the better. After all, my goal was mediocrity and this half-hearted “hello” fit that description perfectly. As though he had read my mind and decided to go against it, Wylie called their attention. “C’mon guys, you can do better than that! From the top, ‘Hi, Renee!’” Suddenly, every eye was on me and I made around 30 enemies. I had disrupted a rehearsal that was top priority to these marching marionettes. I was shoved behind a marimba and told to “play along” to extraordinarily fast scales, and it hit me that I had completely failed. I was drowning, and no one could offer me a life raft. I didn’t know any scales, was barely aware of what a marimba was and shook when people talked to me. I ordered a new uniform, T-shirts with giant “M”’s on them and uncomfortable

khaki shorts. We performed every other week and I never knew what was going on. I didn’t make any friends and instead developed a lovely farmer’s tan. When school started my luck didn’t waiver. The freshman campus was a double decker misery of identical halls and classrooms. I sat with people I vaguely remembered while cramming homework I’d neglected the night before. However, I slowly became average again. I stayed up late to figure out how to play more than three scales. I talked to more people, raised my hand in class and said more than “I dunno” when called on. I learned names, got phone numbers and was able to play all 12 scales. Sophomore year mediocrity was almost in sight. I played the fourth vibraphone and made non-band friends. Then, junior year, it happened! I was average! I was the second vibe, had everyone in drumline’s number and I had the most average car made, a grey Toyota Camry. Everything was sorted out until my APUSH class. I was a week late because of a schedule change, so the last seat available was adjacent to the prettiest girl I’d ever seen. Suddenly, I was very interested in becoming above average. Now it’s my senior year, and after spending hours studying, performing, filling out scholarships and promposals, I’m finally above average. I play the marimba in the Symphonic Band, am the president of a club, got accepted into UT and have been dating my girlfriend for over a year. I could’ve excelled like this for years if I’d realized that failing miserably would lead to success that put me out of mediocrity’s grasp.

“To all our amazing seniors, we know this is not the way you wanted to end your year at Marcus, but we are so proud of you and your resiliency in such a challenging time. You have accomplished so much in your time here and we know you are all meant for great things in the future!!! Much love!!”

Dark chocolate

nikhita ragam In a bustling cafeteria of nose-picking, immature third-graders, I sat with my peanut butter sandwich, quietly nibbling on it, amongst the girls from my class. Macey, a rambunctious basketball player, proposed the idea of comparing our skin colors to types of chocolate. Fear crept into my stomach. One by one, she identified my friends as “white chocolate, white chocolate…,” but when it came to me, she immediately came to the conclusion of “dark chocolate.” Dark chocolate. Those words have haunted me since. At the time, I was appalled. I had worked incredibly hard to remain as fair as possible. I would sit in the shade during recess and avoid direct contact with the sun. I expected “milk chocolate” at most. Although she didn’t mean it, “dark chocolate” was equivalent to a malicious insult. Growing up in an Indian household, I’ve been exposed to colorism, prejudice within an ethnic group of favoring lighter

skin over darker skin, from a young age. When I was born, my parents rejoiced seeing my white skin. Little did they know, the extra five days I spent in my mother’s womb caused me to develop an extra layer of skin that I shed off during my early weeks of life. While my parents never made me feel lesser because of my darker skin, hearing comments of the advantages I would have with fairer skin caused me to foster a negative perception towards my skin color. During one of my visits to India, my dad took me on a walk. We sauntered across the busy streets, observing rushed children hastily jumping into autos and men congregating around food stalls to enjoy their morning chai. We even stopped to savor fresh roadside coconut water. Upon coming home, I washed my hands, looking into the mirror above me. I was horrified. The words “dark chocolate” were ringing in my ears. How could I have been so careless? After returning from India, I made it my mission to never repeat such a mistake. During recess, in 100 degree Texas heat, I would wear jeans and a sweatshirt to ensure the sun wouldn’t prey on my skin. I forbid myself from entering a pool unless it was indoors. This past summer, I attended the Telluride Association Summer Program. Given that my group was 50% Asian, the dichotomy, or contrast, between the East and West was a reoccurring discussion topic. Within mainstream media, the West tends to otherize the East by portraying it as an exotic phenomenon. For example, in The Cheetah Girls: One World, India is depicted as a vibrant country where everyone supposedly lives in palaces and wears elaborate outfits. Obviously, this is far from the reality,

but this is often how Eastern countries are shown in Western media. During one of my late-night conversations with peers about the exoticization of Eastern cultures, I realized something: this East/ West dichotomy exists specifically within South Asian representation in media. Popular South Asian actors in Hollywood, such as Mindy Kailing (The Office) and Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), have played characters where their ethnic identity is tied to their role. Some may have accents but one uniting feature between these actors is their darker skin color. It’s the same one the West uses to identify me as South Asian. Oddly, in the East, fairness is preferred amongst actors. It’s frustrating to live at this intersection of the East and West, as in the East, I’m expected to strive to be as white as possible. But in the West, I need to be just the right shade of brown to fit in this formulaic description of how a South Asian looks, otherwise I would be confused as Hispanic or racially ambiguous. I used to harbor hateful feelings towards Macey. Looking back, I realize that her idea of comparing skin color to chocolate was definitely problematic, but I was at fault for allowing her words to affect me under the influences of colorism. Although “dark chocolate” shaped the rest of my childhood, I’m grateful for the experience. I have grown to love and embrace my skin color. Today, I could care less about how much I tan. I simply find it fascinating how I’m an embodiment of the East/West dichotomy and have to play different roles in each to be recognized and accepted. Given my experiences, I hope to set an example for young South Asians on how to be dark and accepting of oneself.

“In class, we often talked about how your past experiences have shaped your current relationships. Perhaps this is the moment that will shape your FUTURE relationships. Praying for even MORE growth in your next season of life. Love you all!” Ms. Vara

Perfect Imperfection

adriana pueskens Tie-dye is a trend that’s always been around. On 70s day in school, everyone dresses up in shirts with splotches of mixed colors, and in chemistry we choose our favorite colors and design tie-dye t-shirts. Tie-dye has always been in fashion, but for me, it’s unique because I have a “tie-dye” leg. I was born with a port-wine stain, a birthmark that makes the skin on my left leg appear red because of overexcited blood vessels that don’t “shut off ” and are larger than normal. It can appear anywhere on the body, mine just happens to cover my entire leg. Since about only three out of every 1,000 people have it, many people are unaware of the condition and believe it’s just a bad sunburn. My unique birthmark, put simply, looks like someone spilled wine all over my leg and only cleaned up certain spots. My birthmark created the disadvantage

of looking odd in pictures, but it also provided special advantages. Growing up, it made learning basic directions a lot easier. Since the port wine stain is on my left leg, all I had to do was look down, and I’d instantly know my left from my right. While most kids were struggling to remember directions, I had a built in navigation system. In preschool, a girl in my class told me she didn’t want to play with me because my legs were different colors. I remember being a little shocked at first, and though I didn’t let it affect me for long, it’s still something that’s stuck with me for years. As a child, I was in and out of doctor’s offices when there was still limited research on port-wine stains. Some birthmarks go deeper than the skin and cause internal problems in veins that can have future implications, so from an early age, I was monitored and became used to x-rays and MRI scans. I’ve even visited doctors in New York and California to make sure we could rule out every medical problem that was a possibility for me. As I grew older, doctors told me to consider swimming because the motion of kicking in the water helps shrink the blood vessels and reduce the risk of varicose veins. I had to quit dance, a sport I loved, to try swimming even though it was not my favorite activity. Unexpectedly, this became one of the best decisions anyone has ever made for me. I found a great group of friends on my club team and decided to sign up for my high school swim team freshman year. I continued to enjoy the camaraderie found in high school swimming so much that the early practices at 6 a.m. didn’t faze me. I loved cheering on my peers,

and throughout the wins and losses I’m grateful I always had my team supporting me. Swimming became way more than a medical solution. It continued to boost my confidence through my teenage years as I ironically pursued a sport that put my entire “tie-dye” leg on display, with no options for hiding my uniqueness. Swimming also facilitated my competitive side, pushing me to not only compete against other people, but also to improve on my own best times. I was lucky enough to serve as a captain my senior year, and though I’m sad I never got to finish my senior season of water polo, I’m happy I found a sport and team that have meant the world to me. Through swim, I learned the meaning of responsibility and teamwork. My teammates saw me at my best and at my worst and always pushed me to be true to myself. My tie-dye leg isn’t something that defines me by any means, but it has brought me to a sport that plays an integral part of my identity. Although it’s just a physical appearance, my birthmark has helped shape who I have become and gave me a place in high school. From an early age, I learned that appearances aren’t everything and to focus on myself rather than the opinions of others. What I used to think was an embarrassment has led me to some of my greatest blessings. I’ve become so accustomed to my birthmark that I forget my legs are even different colors. Many people don’t notice the difference anymore, and I believe that’s because I’ve stopped treating it as something that makes me different. If tie-dye is making a comeback, I guess I’m ahead of the trend.

“I have such a soft spot for this graduating class. As freshmen, you were quirky, funny, compassionate, creative, and wildly intelligent. As seniors, you are even more so. I am so proud of who you are and am so grateful to have been part of your educational journey. Thank you for all the joy you’ve brought me!”

The good, the bad and the ugly

michael minton The 1966 spaghetti western “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is a movie about an outlaw who teams up with a wandering stranger, played by Clint Eastwood, to scam the law for bounty money. Eventually, they turn on each other only to unite again to find the buried money of a Civil War soldier. This was one of the first movies I remember seeing with my dad. Something

about the good working with the bad all while the ugly tracked them through the desert mesmerized me. My dad and I loved watching movies together as I grew up. Some of my best memories are spending hours with him, watching movies from classic Westerns to comedies. When I was really young I was a total Momma’s boy. My dad would always joke, “I guess he likes you more,” and try to pass it off with a laugh, but my mother knew it bothered him. But one day my dad came home with a plastic case holding the greatest video game ever made, “Lego Star Wars” for the original Xbox. We spent hours playing together and as we collected every coin in the game, we grew closer and closer. Now, a 2006 video game isn’t the only reason I love my father. Throughout the years he has taught me so much. He’s taught me to keep a cool head while others panic, to always be kind to others despite their circumstances and to always do the right thing no matter how tempting the alternative. I could fill a book with the lessons I’ve learned from that man, but by far the most important is perseverance. When my dad came to Texas for a job that

was promised to him, he instead found himself without a job, battling a lawsuit with two kids and a third on the way. A lesser man would have cracked under the pressure. “I will beat this or I will die trying,” Brian Minton said. He would work himself to the bone before he let his family down, so he fought back. Now he’s a respected doctor with a base of loyal patients who trust my dad with their lives. Over the years me and my dad have grown closer and our communication has improved. Watching “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” now with my father reminds me of our relationship as father and son. I think that’s why I love that movie so much. My upbringing was the combination of a lot of good with a little bad, all being chased by an ugly truth. But in the end instead of having a Mexican standoff in the cemetery over who gets the gold, you find me. A boy who hopes that one day he can live up to his father’s example and carry on the lessons he taught him. I love you, Dad.

“To our peeps in the Class of 2020, you guys were amazing to have in class as fishies and it has truly been a joy to watch you grow up! You taught us so many things like the power cry and that bromances come before romances. The poetry slam was like none other and we love you have always come back to support each class since then. I went to my first Holi Festival with you guys and discovered that the red powder doesn’t wash out of blonde or grey hair. Your service projects were top level and so impressive! The field trip shenanigans and what turned out to be a somewhat stalkerish sounding class shirt. Throughout your time at Marcus you have given so much of yourselves and we are thankful and proud of all that you have accomplished and will continue to do! Love you guys and remember you can leave 9th grade AP Humanities but you can never really escape it!” senior edition

“Class of 2020, I can’t thank you enough for what I learned from you (yes a teacher/coach learned from his students). I have seen you grow and develop into great men and women of amazing character. Never forget where you came from, and never settle for less than your best. This group is going to accomplish amazing things in this world. Whether it was out on the track, on the cross country course, in my Economics/Psychology Class, or in the halls, the class of 2020 inspired me to be the best teacher/coach I can be. Thanks for the memories!”
