There are few things in this world as rewarding to me as creating something with my hands. The feeling I get after cutting a stencil, or spraying paint on a surface is something that is very hard to explain. After my initial educational interest in a fine art degree, it only made sense for me to include hand done elements within my design work. To me this creates a personal touch that becomes more engaging to the audience. Thinking now, the process is almost as rewarding as the final product. When I look at a finished work of mine, I can’t help but think back into the time, effort, and creativity that went into the formation and execution of that particular piece. I guess when I really think about it, it all comes down to emotion. After all that is what connects us to each other. Emotion.

International air travel is a large and competitive industry that has risen from a global yearning for connection through business and pleasure. Pelican Airways is not just a safe and economic way to travel, but a representation of the nation of Australia, it’s people, and the environment that all play such an integral part of it’s culture. The pelican is capable of traveling long distances while saving energy, which represents the standards set by this airline. The pattern that is used was inspired by Aborginal painting techniques. The blue hues of the color pallete serve as a connection, between the airline, and the ocean and sky. The warm orange provides a sense of comfort, as well as serving as a direct nod to the sun that rises and sets on our journey through life.

The burlesque performance reached its peak in America during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. However, this art form has gained popularity, and performances are on the rise. This project was aimed at drawing influence in design and execution from this early time period. From the bold color pallete to the illustration style, the elements of this poster are an homage to the vintage stlye that is so strongly associated with the art of burlesque. The color pallete consists of tones of yellow and gold. These are meant not only contrast sharply with the black text, but also a play off the name of the show. The ornamental decoration adds a sense of vintage appeal, while providing an excellent backdrop to the simple silouhette city that provides a base for the whole illustration.
In recent years snowboarding has enjoyed a global acceptance. The key for this project was to go back to the roots and draw from the sports counter culture origins, and embrace the stereotypes that surrounded its participants. This line of boards is dedicated to the rebels who pushed the barriers of acceptance in a time where there was none. The logo and brand name are always placed prominently, inferring a sense of power and stability. The graphics used are photos from a cannabis garden, and further cement the connection between the sport and it’s humble roots. The combination of this imagery the bright green and purple colors, and bold typographic treatment are sure to attract a lot of attention when out on the slopes.

Steet art is more popular than ever. What was once strictly an underground art form has been finding its way into mainstream culture. Public Space is a monthly zine that is available through both tablet and browser. The goal of this publication is to discuss current events, share amazing art, and showcase the artists behind them. With the main focus being on the art, a minimilistic approach was taken with the design. A clean and simple user interface helps the user navigate between the different articles and features, with simple swiping motions help the reader progress from one page to the next. Large and bold imagery is used, so that the viewer can realize all of the details of these sometimes amazingly complex pieces contained within this publication.

Wine has become an intense and heavily saturated global market. This project was designed to create a brand that stood out on the shelf both in looks and value. The hand painted surface of the bottle not only provides something pleasing to look at, but is a direct representation of the reef itself. Each bottle represents a different aspect of the reef, from the setting sun over it to, the water that holds such a diverse ecosysytem. The color pallete is inpired by the Great Barrier Reef. Cool blues were chosen to mimic the beauty of the water. The off white represents the sandy beach before it gives way to the reds and yellows of a sunset. The silhouette shapes on each bottle help to reinforce the context of each bottle.

Fine dining has never been more exciting than it is in current times. Chefs are constantly pushing the limits of of the culinary world. The goal of the Dorsia project was to establish an easily recognizable identity that spoke both to the simplicity of the ingredients used as well as the technicallity of the preperation of it’s signature dishes. The hand drawn upper case letter in the center of the geometric pattern is a representaion of the care and heart that is used throughout the cooking process. This was achieved by producing an intricate geometric pattern that surrounds a simple yet elegant letter, providing a direct correlation between the identity and the food that is created.

The Haight has long been a center of counter culture and self expression. Many large musical and visual artists called this area home while creating pieces that still have an impact on the culture of today. Haight x Ashbury is a brand that seeks to put a modern twist on the memories of the psychedelic movement and bring it into a new era. A clothing line built for the modern day prankster, Haight x Ashbury is awash in bright colors and flowing shapes that are reminescant of the of the Hippy era. The typeface is custom and a take on a display font most commonly associated with rock concert poster art of the time period. This is a clothing brand sure to bring out your inner child.

Electronic music has gone from an element of the underground to a major force withing the mainstream music scene. Branding for these artists is now more important than ever in this heavily saturated market. The goal of this project was to focus on one particular music label (Dirtybird Records) and to really play up the “deep aspect of their work. The passion and enthusiasm that they display within the deep house genre needed to be manifested into a visual form that fully conveys the energy and drive that helped to propel them to the forefront of modern rave culture. This was accomplished by creating imagery that combines both deep space, and the animals from the deep sea. The juxtaposition of these works well together as the lack of gravity in space mimcs the effects of swimming in water. Furthermore, the use of silhouette animal shapes calls upon the viewer to use their imagination, further engaging the audience while calling upon their own creativity.

When I started this journey I had just moved to San Diego, and was looking for an opportunity to continue my education. This portfolio has been an accumulation of many years of hard work and personal growth. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Kayla Dennis for being there to support me through the struggle. Your energy and love kept me going throughout this whole process. Many thanks go out to the San Diego City College Design Program. Countless hours of happiness and frustration have been shared with my peers and educators that I will remember for years to come. Andrea Singer for not only showing me the art of book making, but showing me what it truly means to have a positive outlook on life. Her encouragement and advice helped me more than she knows. Sean Bacon for the hours of time that he invested in shaping my design strategy and skills. It would have been easy for him to give up on me at times, but he stuck with me and I’m undoubtedly a better designer as well as person because of it. Min Choi. Thank you for showing me what it truly means to draw inspiration from my passions. The challenge of your class was an experience I look back at with fondness. Amy Levine.
To everyone involved I am forever grateful for the laughs we shared, the frustrations we got through, and the strides that were made. I truly look forward to what the future holds. I dedicate this portfolio to my grandfather, Jim Haire. The most influential person in my life and an inspiration always. If I turn out to be half of the man that you are I will consider my life a success. I cherish the time that I have had with you and the lessons that you have shared with me.
