The First Word
Bigger, Better, Stronger Greetings Brothers, I hope you all had a memorable time at the 57th Grand Council Convention in Denver, Colorado! Grand Vice Regent (and now Grand Regent) Latha Radhakrishnan did a great job in planning and executing the event along with Executive Director Johnny Porter and the Kappa Psi staff! I just want to take this last column to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve you over the past two years as Grand Regent. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience, and nothing would have been done without your outstanding 2013–2015 Executive Committee consisting of Grand Vice Regent Latha Radhakrishnan, Grand Counselor Robert Mancini, Grand Historian Christy Askew, Grand Ritualist Harry Marcelin, Graduate Member-at-Large Jason Milton, Collegiate Member-at-Large Grant McGuffey, Immediate Past Grand Regent Kali Weaver, and Executive Director Johnny Porter. We were a great team that worked well together and I am so proud of what we accomplished (along with all of the committee and task force chairs)! I would have to say growth was the hallmark of the past two years as we added 13 Eric Gupta, Grand Regent
collegiate chapters and 7 graduate chapters into the fold. Chartering Delta Omega to Epsilon Nu spanned three different Executive Committees but this last term, we chartered Epsilon Omega to Zeta Nu! What an accomplishment! Many thanks go to the Executive Committee as they served as liaisons to the interested students at these various campuses, but many thanks go to all of you as well! We constantly get requests to initiate new chapters and when I ask why they are interested, it usually comes back to other people they know who are Kappa Psi brothers and the great experiences they have had. So thank you all so much for exhibiting the four cornerstones and representing Kappa Psi so well! Keep up the great work! Once again, I would like to thank you all for the opportunity to lead our great Fraternity over the last two years. Thank you all so much for giving me a great Executive Committee to work with as well. It has been a truly humbling experience, and I am looking forward to what the next two years bring under the leadership of Grand Regent Radhakrishnan. See you all at the 58th GCC if not sooner! Fraternally,
Eric K. Gupta Grand Regent

The Kappa Psi Experience: Brotherhood for Life
In the Summer issue of The MASK we celebrate the graduates. Whether a graduate of the class of 2015 or a more seasoned veteran of Kappa Psi, our bonds of brotherhood will last a lifetime. In the Final Word, Past Grand Regent Kali Weaver reminds us that Kappa Psi is a family and the biggest challenge we all face as graduates is balancing our Kappa Psi family with our lives outside of the Fraternity. Congratulations to the Class of 2015 and welcome to the next chapter of your Kappa Psi experience—being a graduate brother. As many of our chapters reported, there was much excitement, as brothers looked forward to upcoming Province meetings and the 57th Grand Council Convention. This issue covers all of the 2015 awards from GCC, including the Foundation scholarship winners that was presented at the awards luncheon. The Fall issue of The MASK will have complete coverage of the Grand Council Convention. Finally, make sure to explore 99 Hands, as all 105 chapters in our Fraternity have submitted a report. All of our chapters can be strengthened by sharing and learning from each other.
Eliana Kurzum (Buies Creek Grad) and Tyler Finocchio (Epsilon Zeta) participate in the 3-legged race during Atlantic Province Field Day. Shown here, brothers line up for the wheel barrow race. The anticipation of bonding with brothers at the Province meetings is evident in the chapter reports. The bonds formed create a true Brotherhood for life!

This spring, we made a bold new move to not have a spring pledge class after having such a huge pledge class in the fall. Instead, we devoted many of our meetings to bonding with our new brothers. We continue to staff the dispensing pharmacy at the student-run Phillips Neighborhood Clinic, providing free health care to an underserved population in the Twin Cities area, rain (or snow!) or shine.

Our PharmaCOPA Committee was able to put together a fabulous yearbook for the entire College of Pharmacy. STI Talks to high school students continue to be a mainstay in the volunteering tradition with our brothers, allowing them to educate multiethnic students in Minneapolis about the risks and misconceptions of sexually transmitted diseases. One of the recent traditions of the Epsilon chapter is our program called C.A.R.E. for Haiti. Every spring, we send a group of brothers to Chabin, Haiti, to set up a free clinic to serve the needs of the community there.

Theta graduating brothers gather after their hooding ceremony in May, 2015. This year, we sent 11 brothers down to serve an amazing amount of patients. By the second day of the clinic, they had seen a total of 239 patients and filled more than 800 prescriptions! C.A.R.E. continues to be a rewarding experience for our brothers by allowing them to gain valuable skills with patient assessment, working in an interprofessional health care team, and treating acute conditions. Every year we see the program grow. Brothers enjoyed a relaxing week in Breezy Point, Minnesota, unwinding before finals. We also enjoyed a very fun weekend with our brothers in
Madison at the spring conclave. Our dinner meeting this semester was at Mancini’s in Saint Paul and was fabulous. We had so much fun trying to match brothers to a secret they submitted prior to the dinner. Shout out to Angela Yarbrough and Katie Braddock for organizing such a fun night for the chapter! Our brothers look forward to an action-packed summer. We are planning for the Northern Plains Province assembly for the fall. Our grad chapter and current brothers plan to attend a Twins baseball game soon. —Morgan Hoeft

This past spring semester, we welcomed 14 new brothers. We know they will accomplish great things, both in school and beyond. The chapter organized several successful events this past semester. On March 21, we hosted our annual Kappapalooza, featuring live music from Nobody’s Poet, door prizes, and health awareness. There was a record turnout and we raised more than $1,000 for the Richmond Area Center for High Blood Pressure. Additionally, we hosted the annual Kappa Psi Golf Tournament on April 4 at The Hollows Golf Club in Montpelier, Virginia. The tournament followed captain’s choice rules; teams of four teed it up for an afternoon of fellowship and fun. The top three teams won gift cards, and there were also prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive as well as a raffle. It was another popular event with a great turnout from current students, alumni and faculty. We raised $3,000 for the ALS Association and the Center for High Blood Pressure. There are several events we are organizing for the fall. The first is the third Yanchick Invitational Golf Tournament. For the first time, this year the tournament is being organized by the Interfraternity Council, so we will be working closely with the other fraternities in the School of Pharmacy to put on a great event. Our chapter will also host the second Kappa Ball basketball tournament in the fall. In its first year, this event

This past April, we had a chance to truly make an impact in the Charleston community by donating 6,000 meals to those in need. Throughout the 2014–2015 academic year, the chapter held various fundraising events including chicken bog, jambalaya, and Thanksgiving style dinner fundraisers. At each event, the brothers cooked up a deli-
cious meal to serve to the MUSC community. All proceeds went to a fund that eventually would be donated to the Low Country Food Bank in Charleston. The chapter also had several corporate sponsors who helped provide the supplies for the fundraisers so that each event’s profits could go directly to charity. The proceeds from Iota’s biggest social event of the year, Swamp Party, were also added to the fund. During each event, students were also given the option to bring in nonperishable canned goods and food items that could be donated to the food bank. Iota has a rich history of working with the food bank, and it is an organization that truly makes an impact in the community. In the end, we were able to donate $1,000 to the Low Country Food Bank. Brothers were able to visit the food bank and make the donation in person to see the place where so many people volunteer to ensure that no one

The past few months have featured some of the most impressive events in recent Nu chapter history. In April, we hosted the Northeast Province meeting, which went very smoothly. Our immediate past regent, Jared Mangano, was elected as Northeast Province Historian. On the philanthropic side, thanks to smart fundraising opportunities our chapter had this past year, we were able to raise money for various causes. At the end of the year, we were able to donate several hundred dollars to the Berbice orphanage located in Guyana, which was used to purchase hundreds of pounds of food and supplies for the children. This was the largest monetary donation in Nu chapter history and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the orphanage in the future. As the spring semester drew to a close, we installed our new chapter officers who look to build upon our momentum this next year. —Greg Greenier

The semester continued with our annual Keeneland Tailgate, open to the entire University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and the Great Lakes Province. Several brothers were in attendance for fellowship and horse racing, including brothers from Gamma Delta. We closed the semester with a Founders Day Dinner, celebrating the
chapter’s 106th birthday. Brothers gathered at the local VFW where the event began with a poker tournament in which treasurer Anthony Johns walked away with the pot for the second straight year. The tournament was followed by dinner provided by our chapter. It was then time for the final meeting of the year to be called to order and to begin the installation of new officers. After the meeting was closed, the Brother of the Year award was presented to our new regent, Tyler Reade. Between studying and fellowship, we found time to give back to the community. While some brothers were able to attend the spring Mountain East Province conclave, others spent their time at the University of Pittsburgh’s annual Relay For Life event. Beta Kappa’s Relay For Life team was one of the top teams at the university in terms of number of team members and money raised for the event! In total, the Beta Kappa chapter was able to provide 323 hours of philanthropy over the spring semester alone. We held our P4 night to send off the graduating P4 brothers. The night was full of laughter and tears. Brothers did not lose touch just because summer started. We got together to take a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo. The brothers had a great time catching up on what had happened since the school year ended. —Kimberly Lor
Beta Xi Celebrates 100 years! Beta Xi chapter celebrated their 100-year anniversary on May 2. More than 230 alumni and guests attended. The event began at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy with cocktails and dinner, followed by live music and a reception at the Kappa Psi house. Dean Robert Blouin of UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, national officers, including Grand Regent Eric Gupta, and the chapter’s Co-Grand Council Deputies gave great speeches and reflected on their experiences, fond memories and other great stories from the past 100 years of Beta Xi chapter.

Brothers had an eventful end of the school year. We hosted a Boy Scout merit badge event once again and it was very successful, as many Scouts received their medicine, fire safety, public health and chemistry merit badges. We look forward to expanding the event next year to reach more troops. We had a large group of brothers participate in the “Adopt-aHighway” program this year as well. In April, we had our initiation and annual STAG event, which brought back numerous alumni brothers. Following initiation was a cookout and a football game which many of the brothers participated in. At the end of the semester, we held executive board elections. Congratulations to our new regent, Matt Jordan, and our new vice regent, Kevin Kovachick. In May, our chapter volunteered at the pharmacy graduation ceremony, helping set up and then handing out programs during graduation. This summer has been relaxing. We have enjoyed brotherhood during several viewing parties as we watched our (somewhat) local Cleveland Cavaliers advance to the NBA basketball finals. —Charles Lam

The show consisted of nine acts, which included our annual Kappa Psi Step Team and the band Acid Reflux, which is comprised of pharmacy students and faculty. The show was a huge success and we plan on improving the show to make it even better in the future. Several brothers of Beta Omicron volunteered to spend time with children at Seattle Children’s Hospital and watched “Rise of the Guardians with them. In addition, brothers helped clean up the streets in the University District of Seattle to help out their community with Adopt-a-Street. Pharmacy to recruit new members. Through recruitment, the chapter gained 31 new brothers, making this class one of the largest in the past decade. Initiation was held in March and brothers celebrated afterward by attending the home game baseball series. During the spring semester, we participated in several community service projects within the UMSOP. In February, the UMSOP Relay For Life team hosted a schoolwide baking competition in which nine pharmacy organizations prepared goods to sell to students. Tickets were purchased at a ticket booth and we used to “buy” food. Kappa Psi won the event, obtaining more tickets than any other table. Brothers also participated in the actual Relay For Life event held in April. With our help, the pharmacy school placed second in fundraising for the event. Brothers also created a team for Ole Miss’ annual “Big Event,” the largest community service project for students. These events served as a great way for new brothers to bond while serving their community. In April, the annual Kappa Psi Crawfish Bowl on the Square had a record turnout with more than 270 tickets being sold. Brothers from both the Oxford and Jackson campuses were in attendance for the boil. Several faculty members also made their way to the event. We would also like to recognize a few members of our chapter. Our faculty sponsor, Dr. John Rimoldi, was selected for the Ole Miss Mortar Board’s “Last Lecture.” Each year, a professor is nominated to give the very “last lecture” of the school year, and Dr. Rimoldi was chosen for this honor. After winning Greek Week and celebrating success with our parents at “Parent’s Banquet,” we were happy to end this semester and kick off the summer. Congratulations to our eight graduates. Many of us are out on rotations or fulfilling paid internships, but we would like to recap the end of our spring semester. An update from the spring issue would not be complete without finishing final exams and starting rotations. More than 25 percent of our chapter attended the “Study-A-Thon” which is held at the end of each semester before finals week. Over the course of 12 hours, each fraternity and sorority on campus expressed their accomplishments while the students were studying. Since the event is managed by Greek Life, our scholarship chair encouraged brothers to put the final touches on our cramming for the semester. Through all the snacking and team studying, we managed to get through another session of exams. This summer, we have plans for recreation, philanthropy, and fraternal bonding. One of our new social events took place at Apple River near New Richmond, Wisconsin. Seventeen brothers took the trek for more than four hours to camp, tube and enjoy the sun at River’s Edge Campground. Several brothers prepared outdoor meals (such as hot dogs and hamburgers) while others socialized. Everyone had a great time even though a few tents were rained out during the weekend adventure. In this episode of Beta Omega rocks the free world, the brothers were busy raising money and performing community service. So much service was done in the community of North Philadelphia that it can’t fit on one page. Here it goes anyway: Brothers hosted coloring and an Easter egg hunt for the kids at Shriners Hospitals for Children. If you were there, you’d believe the Easter bunny was real. Brothers then helped host Temple University’s School of Pharmacy formal, which raised another $1,000 for Shriners Hospitals. We then focused on the alarming number of homeless persons in our city. did a Sponsor-A-Slice event, where brothers set up a table in our school lobby and asked students to donate a dollar in order to “sponsor-a-slice.” Students were given a sticky note on
which to write a note of inspiration. This event benefited the Last Stop Recovery Clubhouse and each of the 75 people at the clubhouse were given pizza, cookies, water, soda, chips, and a sticky note of encouragement written by those who donated to the event. We raised $356, which allowed us to not only serve the food listed above, but we were also able to donate $200 in canned goods and other nonperishable items. (Photos on page 39) The brothers then said, “Let’s do some manual labor.” And so we did. The brothers teamed up with Education Works to perform a Philadelphia spring cleanup—clearing empty lots full of trash and other debris. We also hosted an 85th anniversary celebration of our Beta Omega chapter. The event was held at the International House Philadelphia. Current brothers and alumni gathered in great numbers for revels in unity. There was a presentation to pay tribute to the late Paul Hiller—may he rest in peace. We had a very busy spring, as we continued events such as our highway cleanup, dodgeball with the Boys and Girls Club, the student lounge cleanup, our spring fling, and the endof-the-year barbecue. Along with these traditional events, we also had some new ones: Bingo with the Village Senior Residence, helping with a bike carnival at an elementary school, and hosting a s’mores cookout for potential incoming students. Our biannual highway cleanup is always a hit with brothers and the community. We pick up litter on a mile stretch that is between the University of Montana and a local high school. Dodgeball with the Boys and Girls Club offers brothers a bit of stress relief and exercise during the hectic school year, while also giving back to the community. The children with this organization have even recognized brothers in public and always ask when we will come back to play again. This year’s spring fling was a pajama-themed party at a local bowling alley. Not only was the event great with bowling and karaoke, but the
timing could not have been better. The event took place two days before interviews and it helped remind brothers why they joined Kappa Psi in the first place. It was a great success. The night after spring fling, we did the s’mores cook at the fire pit on campus. This relieved the stress of applicants, while allowing them to see what Kappa Psi is all about. The last quarter of the school year was very busy. We planned many rush, philanthropic, and brotherhood events for the end of the school year. April was STD awareness month. We hosted Safe Sex Week on campus, which included booths that provided free STD testing and informational pamphlets. Our vice regent professional Ashley Chen organized a Lunch and Learn hosted by Dr. Neil Schmidt, a Kappa Psi alum. At the end of Safe Sex Week, we had a Battle of the Sexes rush event where 17 unaffiliated and 20 active members attended. The hard work of rush officers Daniel Griffin and Nalda Nguyen-Brics made the event both fun and successful. In April, we participated in Greek Week on campus and came in third place. Later that month, we participated in a chili cook-off to benefit Relay For Life. In May, we held our graduation ritual for the 25 graduates of Gamma Pi. This was followed by a brotherhood event to celebrate their upcoming graduation. We delivered STLCOP Mom and Dad T-shirts and sweatshirts as part of a fundraising campaign for our chapter, and raised $893.53 from the shirt sales. The May Chaplin’s challenge, a quiz prepared by Brandon Anderek, was a series of multiple choice questions regarding officer duties and formal meeting eti-

The 2014–2015 year has been a lively one. The spring semester was full of events and fundraising that allowed brothers to become more involved and strengthened the chapter altogether. From multiple bake sales and candygram sales to hosting Province, it was a very busy spring semester. In February, we hosted a lip sync contest, which was held on campus. Brothers and faculty participated in this event and the chapter ended up raising a good amount of money with proceeds going to the American Heart Association. Spring Storm was another event that Gamma Rho participated in to make a difference in the Albuquerque community. Spring Storm is organized by UNM Community Experience Group and involves countless other organizations participating in a one-day community service event. We had the privilege to host the Province meeting in April. This was a huge event and it took lots of preparation. Thanks to Quinton Tafoya and many others, the meeting was a success. Attendance was fantastic and it was great to visit with all of the other brothers in our Province. Our new executive team was inducted on April 22 at Rub-N-Wood

Network. We had every kind of player, from first timers to semi-pros. We had students, doctors, alumni and friends all come out for a beautiful day on the green. Registration began at 7 a.m. where we sold mulligans (in case players spliced a ball into the trees) and handed out our annual custom made T-shirts for the players. The weather was supposed to be 70 percent chance of rain, and yet the clouds left for a perfect 8 a.m. tee time and 18 holes. The honeysuckle was in full bloom and it felt great to get some fresh air after studying hard. As the players worked their way around the golf course, our personal cart girls delivered ice cold soda to the players, keeping them hydrated and happy. After the golf game, players were treated to a delicious barbecue meal sponsored by Adams Ribs Co. restaurant. Drinks were offered while the teams mingled and shared stories about their day. Old friends were reunited and new friends were made. Prizes of pro golf bags were given out for the longest drive and closest to the hole. Sunglasses and coffee gift cards were given for other prizes. We raised $500 for the Children’s Miracle network, which they will use to support research, train personnel, purchase equipment and pay for uncompensated care, all to improve the lives of as many children as possible.
party, Grad Ritual Barbecue, and a serious game of Ultimate Frisbee. At the end of the semester, we welcomed in a new executive board that is excited to continue to make Gamma Upsilon the best chapter it can be! Our own Grand Council Deputy, Dr. John Murphy, won this year’s Theodore G. Tong Distinguished Leadership and Service Award that is presented to one individual who has demonstrated service and commitment to the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and its students. Brothers filled a local restaurant for a record turnout at our Founders Day Banquet. With a “spring garden party” theme, we honored our brothers who exemplified “high ideals” and “industry” and recognized some great milestones. This year, we had seven brothers initiated into Rho Chi, three Phi Lambda Sigma initiates, and all elected Student Council officer positions this year were Kappa Psi brothers. We are sad but proud to have seen 35 brothers graduate this year and another 16 match for residency! Our graduating Gamma Upsilon brothers left a wonderful legacy by including words of wisdom and advice on how to be successful in pharmacy school and some wonderful tips for matching with a residency program. —Kimberly Sassenrath

We currently have 36 active brothers. This past May was bittersweet, as four of our most dedicated brothers graduated. We are immensely proud of them, but it will not be the same
without having them here on a daily basis. Three graduates will begin practice immediately, while one of them and another alumnus from several years ago will be continuing their education through residencies! With the help of alumni donations, fundraisers, and the hard work of our brothers, we have successfully completed a lot of maintenance on our house such as replacing the siding, seeding the front yard, spreading gravel in the back for parking, and constructing a privacy fence around our backyard. Our hard work has not only been at home though! Despite less than desirable weather, our teams for flag football, softball, basketball and Ultimate Frisbee were victorious many times on the field and represented Kappa Psi well. Our chapter is always looking for a way to better our community, the College of Pharmacy, and much more. One of our most dedicated brothers organized a fundraiser to help those affected by the horrendous earthquake in Nepal. Through his heartwarming efforts and some help from the other brothers, he was able to successfully raise $1,000 for those who needed it most. We had an absolute blast at the Atlantic Province summer conclave hosted by Epsilon Zeta and cannot wait to see you all at GCC in Denver!

We hosted a very successful Michigan Blood Drive and cleaned up our community when participating in Ferris State University’s annual Big Event. One of the major community service projects we hosted this semester was called Glow, Skate, and Donate. We hosted this event at the Big Rapids Roller Rink with a glow party theme to collect non-perishable canned food items. After a great night of roller skating, games and face painting, we collected 600 cans for our local food pantry. We recently initiated eight phenomenal brothers. Each of them possesses unique traits that will be an asset to the Fraternity. Three of them hold president-elect positions in campus organizations, and two currently hold presidential positions. Our brothers have held professional development workshops within the chapter with emphasis on curriculum vitae and letter of intent construction. When not engaging in professional development opportunities, we are busy with community service events. We hosted a blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross and a roadside cleanup campaign on our adopted road on the Mercer Atlanta campus. We also conducted poison prevention awareness presentations and health screenings. Our Founders Day celebration was held mid-March and the turnout was amazing. Alumni brothers traveled from as far as Chicago. Gamma Psi celebrated 62 years of being a chapter, and our commitment to improving the lives of our brothers remains unyielding. While our collegiate brothers are having a major impact on campus and in the community, our alumni are also making their marks on the world. Recent graduate Brothers Nicholas Barker and François Cherestal received a residency and a fellowship position with Grady Memorial Health System and Arbor Pharmaceuticals, respectively. Philip Mensah recently got engaged to his best friend of many years. We are extremely pleased to have Habeeb Ashiru-Balogun as our non-faculty GCD, and Marvin Smith continues to inspire us all with his unyielding commitment to our Fraternity as he seeks a national position in Kappa Psi. The end of the year was followed by our brothers’ retreat to Chattanooga, which served as a bonding moment and a time of fellowship for collegiate and alumni brothers, while setting goals for the next year.

Brothers attended a trampoline park and were able show off their skills on the tightrope, in the dodgeball pit, flipping into the foam pits, and dunking at the basketball hoops! We also saddled up and headed to Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon in Iowa City for line dancing lessons, cheered on the Hawkeyes at an Iowa basketball game, and attended a Hawkeye softball game where brothers gained free admission if they donated a specific item requested by any of Iowa City’s local charities. We had a great time with several fun philanthropic events toward the end of the semester. Brothers were able to show their creative side at a May Day Basket Bonanza, while making “May Day” a little more special for more than 40 kids at the local Ronald McDonald House. Brothers also ran in a 5K supporting the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House. We hosted a donation drive for the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic. Summer vacation may mean three months of relaxing to some people, but not for Kappa Psi brothers! Our executive board and committees have been planning our rush events, placing gift orders for fundraising, and reserving the date for our Brother Social. We plan to add a philanthropic rush event to our schedule this year. Whether this event is a beach cleanup or a combined effort with Feeding South Florida, we feel it is important to set the correct tone with potential pledges. Every year before school starts, our chapter gets together for a Brother
Social to discuss upcoming business for the year, participate in team building activities, and enjoy a night by the fire at a local campground.

Our brothers have been very active this semester, participating in a variety of philanthropic events. In March, we volunteered at the Cuts for Kids event where we had a booth that promoted the “Let’s Move” campaign, educating kids on the importance of physical activities. Our quarterly roadside cleanup was held later that month to keep the streets around campus looking sharp. In April, we helped prepare and serve dinner to
families of children at the Ronald McDonald Cambridge House in Phoenix. Brothers also joined in on Pat’s Run in honor of Pat Tillman and raised funds for his scholarship foundation. May marked the beginning of new leadership. At our annual Kappa Psi banquet, themed “A Night in Venice,” the duties were passed on to the 2017 brothers from the Class of 2016. We would like to congratulate the newly elected brothers on their leadership roles. Brothers had a great time reminiscing about all of our achievements throughout the year, and a raffle drawing was held with proceeds going to the American Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts in Nepal. Rush started off with a bang. The first rush event was our annual meet
As our school year came to an end, we celebrated our eight highly accomplished graduating brothers with a delightful dinner at the Il Bellagio in West Palm Beach. Not only were our brothers able to reminisce over all the great times they have had over the past few years, but we were able to thank them for always being there for our Kappa Psi family. We congratulate Angelica Costanzo as the recipient of our chapter’s 99 Hands Award, Greg Chilson (Nikki Chilson’s husband) for our Sweetheart Pin, and Sam Henningfield for Brother of the Year! Kappa Psi brothers take opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills that will further enhance their journey in the field of pharmacy. Epsilon Sigma Brother Payal Kapadia was presented with the opportunity to study abroad in parts of Ireland and the United Kingdom this past summer. Her insight from the trip provides many vantage points as understanding differences in the various health systems can progress our own profession in the United States. The University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy study abroad program affords the students and professors alike the ability to gain worldly experiences while understanding more about the pharmacy profession. One of the most prominent differences in the healthcare models between that of Ireland and United Kingdom versus the United States is the hot button issue of funding. The result of these various systems affects how the pharmacies operate. Another difference worth noting is that pharmacy students in the United Kingdom, in general, are quite a bit younger when they finish schooling, as the university system differs from our own. On Payal’s trip, students were able to visit and shadow different community and hospital pharmacies to see how pharmacy is practiced, what things are being done differently, and how pharmacy is perceived in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Payal Kapadia joins professors and fellow students from the different University of Florida campuses to travel and learn about pharmacy practices in the UK and Ireland.

Congratulations to our new board members: Chris Lehmer, Andrew Willeford, Ashley Wu, Mahsa Mi, Saijal Khattar, Nicole Kim, Michael Lam, Joshua Valdez, Tran Le, David Cotrone, Amelia Weidling and Matt Horton! This year, philanthropist chair Phuong organized a day where brothers joined together to volunteer at Feeding America San Diego. This is an organization that hopes to achieve a hunger-free and healthy community by distributing foods to those in need. With more than 99 helping hands, we performed quality control and packed hundreds of pounds of food for hungry communities in San Diego. We certainly worked hard this year, but we also played hard. Dressed in our best togas for our traveling toga event, P1s and P4s journeyed together to the homes of P2s and P3s for great food and company. We kept in touch with alumni, both old and new, around the San Diego area through alumni mixers, and we finished the year off by “dappering” up for our Great Gatsby- themed banquet! At our banquet, we recognized our outstanding Brother Johnny Zhou and the winner of our Leadership Scholarship, Lauren Aragon, for their achievements in our chapter. In addition, we also honored the graduating P4 class by recognizing each brother through superlatives voted by their own class. It was both a fun and an emotional night for the chapter. —Michael Lam

It was a pleasure getting to know them better as they progressed from pledges to brothers. In March, we co-hosted a murder mystery dinner with to fundraise for Relay For Life. The event was a tremendous success and even featured several Delta Psi brothers as performers. Later that month, the chapter had its annual White Coat Ball, an inter-professional formal dance for UMD’s pharmacy and medical students. Everyone came dressed to impress, as this year’s theme was
“GLITZ, GLAM, and GATSBY.” It was an unforgettable night filled with socializing, raffle prizes, music and dancing. To help support the Duluth Public Library and their Children’s Health Fair, a book drive was held along with the White Coat Ball. Students were able to receive a discount on their ticket with the donation of a children’s book. Throughout the semester, our brothers were involved in numerous philanthropy events such as Relay For Life, an Earth Day highway cleanup, YMCA Healthy Kid’s Day, and a Be The Match registry drive. We created a series of new rush events in addition to the annual Luau, Formal Dinner and Round Robin. “Move-in Aid” is a new event where the brothers will help students move in and get oriented to the area, and will help get the Kappa name out from day one. “Field Day,” a collaborative effort between Kappa Psi and Phi Delta Chi, is also a new event that will bring all rushees together for a fun day outside. Last but not least, “How to Survive ACP” is a forum being held for new students by the brothers to address any concerns or questions the upcoming P1s might have. These events are anticipated to bring a lot of attention to Kappa Psi. In the midst of planning for the upcoming year, the brothers also held a farewell party for those moving on to rotations for their final year at ACP. We celebrated our third Founders Day on March 7 with a night of fun, games and brotherhood, following our first Adopt-a-Highway pickup of the semester. We had a great turnout for all of the day’s events. In mid-March, we held our annual spring Cupcake Bar fundraiser. All brothers chipped in by making hundreds of cupcakes and volunteered time to monitor the table and promote the event. The entire school was able to enjoy creating their own cupcakes, and the event was a huge success. In March, brothers volunteered at the American Heart Association Heart Ball in Abilene. The event is used to promote and fund research, advocacy and education programs of the AHA. Brothers were able to help prepare the event space and attend the ball to help raise donations. Newly elected officers were sworn in to their positions at our March meeting, and we are excited to watch our new leaders grow. Thank you to all the previous officers for an amazing year. We were proud to have many brothers attend Province this past April. We all had a wonderful time and are excited to see everyone again at the fall Province in Dallas. The growth of our Brotherhood and incorporation of new ideas to strengthen our chapter has created a blueprint for an exceptional year. The initiation of 23 new brothers has sparked a lot of enthusiasm in the chapter. We tirelessly elected a new executive board in April. It was a long process, but it was well worth the time and effort to carefully choose the brothers to lead our chapter. We had the pleasure of attending a few initiation rituals. Rosalind Franklin was one of them. In addition, we had the opportunity to participate in the MAP conclave at Midwestern University. We were able to network while discussing the future of pharmacy. Our brothers also took part in St. Baldrick’s by shaving their heads for childhood cancer research. The brothers who shaved their heads enjoyed it and we will continue doing this event in years to come! We bid farewell to our graduating brothers and celebrated with a graduation ritual and dinner. After more than two months of pledging, we proudly initiated 11 new members into our Brotherhood on March 25, 2015, bringing the total chapter size up to 43 since chartering in 2013. During pledging, our active and pledge brothers sold Kappa Psi shirts, gift baskets, and white coats to raise money for the chapter as well as the College of Pharmacy. Brothers and pledges signed up to volunteer at the food pantry in Waukegan, distributing food to low-income families in the neighborhood. Brothers also pack food with the Feed My Starving Children organization in Libertyville the first Thursday of every month to help feed malnourished children in Third World countries. Our chapter partnered with Jewel Osco in Waukegan to provide free blood glucose and blood pressure screening and counseling, which also helped advance the profession of
pharmacy. Some of our brothers went to Illinois Legislative Day in Springfield where they were able to advocate for pharmacists and address several concerns regarding issues and challenges that the pharmacy field is currently facing. The majority of us had the opportunity to meet and bond with brothers from other chapters at Mid-America Province spring conclave, which was held at Midwestern College of Pharmacy. At conclave, we won the Traveler’s Award for the second time in a row. Also, Redi Dema won his very first Brother of the Year Award, and Brother Michael Hildebrandt was honorably selected to be the new MAP Parliamentarian. We have been working hard this past spring semester to establish a solid foundation for our chapter. We have especially geared our focus on fundraising and philanthropy. Our first fundraising event took place at the Northern Plains Province spring conclave in Madison, Wisconsin, where we designed and sold Kappa Psi baseball tees. It was such a great way to get to know our fellow brothers of the NPP as well as raise some money for our chapter. We have also worked the concession stands during home games for the Milwaukee Brewers. Committed to 12 games, we have already worked five of them, selling some of Wisconsin’s
favorite things: brats, cheese covered French fries, and beer. Not only is this a HUGE fundraiser for our chapter, but it brings us closer together as brothers by working as a team to manage the stand. Both fundraisers have been great successes for us! After the massive earthquakes that affected Nepal, we wanted to take action to help the many in need. In order to raise money to go toward the relief efforts, we launched a GoFundMe page where we received many gracious donations. We also held a bake sale at our school where the brothers of our chapter baked treats to be sold. One hundred percent of our proceeds from both the GoFundMe page and the bake sale were directly donated to the charity DIRECT RELIEF who worked on preparing and delivering medical resources to local health facilities. We proudly raised nearly $750 for disaster relief aid in Nepal. As we look forward to next year quickly approaching, plans are being made for Zeta Theta’s first-ever rushing event for new pledges. Cleveland Grad is back up and running! Our most recent meeting took place on June 28 at the Winking Lizard in Akron, Ohio. We spent nearly four hours reminiscing on past Province and GCC meetings and teaching the newly initiated brothers of Zeta Epsilon the true meaning of brotherhood! We also executed our first philanthropic endeavor. Brothers collected clothing articles for the MetroHealth Medical Center to be given to rape victims at the time of hospital discharge. Our next social event will take place at Progressive Field on July 11. Follow our upcoming meetings and events on Facebook at Cleveland Grad. —Christina J. Mazur

We finished up the spring season by attending many graduation rituals. As we watched our brothers during the ritual, we recalled the various moments in their Kappa Psi journey from rushing to pledging, and then to initiation. Now they have reached another milestone in their lives— being a graduate brother. We are very proud of them. This summer, Illinois Grad will be enjoying a little free time from school. We plan to continue our annual baseball outing with the collegiate brothers to bask in fellowship and to fundraise for Epsilon Rho who will be hosting the next spring Mid-America conclave. We will also participate in the Province philanthropic cause: Relay For Life/American Cancer Society. —Elaine Moy

The weekend started with dinner on Friday night at Kyodai restaurant in North Liberty with the Delta Zeta brothers followed by a game night at Pamela’s house. On Saturday morning, we elected officers for the next two years at our business meeting. Over the day, we had two educational talks—one from Brother Brett Barker about a new NACDS certificate program for diagnostic testing in community pharmacies and the other given by Brother Adam Gregg about liver failure. Following lunch, we went shopping for items to donate to the Ronald McDonald House from their wish list. We spent the afternoon making tag blankets for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. We headed to Lower City Park to join Delta Zeta for a barbecue and bocce ball tournament. The weekend was capped off by a lovely evening around the fire pit at 30hop Rooftop Patio in Coralville. Later in May, we sent representatives to both of the Iowa collegiate chapters, Beta Chi and Delta Zeta. We presented 2015–16 honorary Iowa Grad membership certificates to all graduating brothers. Being the family
T h e F i n a l Wo r d
My brothers, It has been my distinct pleasure to serve you for the past 10 years on the Kappa Psi International Executive Committee. Every committee taught me something about Kappa Psi and about myself. While we didn't always agree, we all worked for what we thought was best for the Brotherhood. One of the things we have focused on and continue to focus on is Graduate retention. I believe the key to retention is engaging our Brothers, making attendance worthwhile for them and fun for their families. The foundation of the Fraternity is our relationships, our Brotherhood. As I have transitioned throughout Kappa Psi from a collegiate brother to a graduate brother I have seen many brothers come and go and never come around again. Like many, I thought we lost brothers in the transition from 3rd to 4th year and then 4th year and graduation. While we do lose Brothers during that time, I do not think graduation is the primary reason we lose people. I have watched active graduates marry and not come back and watched even more drop off after having children. I feel like I have finally put together the reason we are losing brothers. I believe we lose brothers when there is a barrier to attendance. This barrier could be in the form of time, distance, or money, or having an important member of the family who cannot or will not attend due to either lack of interest or lack of things to do while the brother is busy. I applaud our efforts at GCC to incorporate a spouse/guest/child program to have something for our significant others while Kali Weaver and her daughter, Lily, enjoy the we’re busy in meetings. But, I don’t think its Kappa Psi reception at APhA. enough. I strongly encourage our chapters to do as many events as possible that are family friendly. Seek ways to engage them and you will begin breaking down that barrier for the brother to attend. In the Atlantic Province, we are working to incorporate a spouse/guest/child program. We are looking at creative ways to include brothers who have children into the meetings. We are trying to be the family we all proclaim to be. As I step back into my new role of “old guy,” my efforts will turn to making sure my family is a part of my Kappa Psi family. I look forward to seeing all of you from the back of the room. Fraternally,
