Whitman gets water filter from fundraising

Environmental and Earth Science teacher David Whitman stands by his water filter, which is located in his class (E207), filling up a water bottle. He hopes to make San Gabriel High School more environmentally friendly by reducing the use of plastic water bottles, thus saving money as well. The filter is motion-activated and has so far filled over 250 bottles. It cost $799, and extra filters cost another $95 each, but they were paid for by the collective effort of Whitman’s fundraising campaign and students’ donations. He walked around campus during lunch for nine days and collected $1,074.02 in order to broadcast his endeavor.
Through their hard work and perseverance, a number of San Gabriel’s graduating seniors received scholarships this year to aid them in their future college careers. Among those fortunate few to gain scholarships were seniors Betty Zamora, Michelle Pham, and Quoc Ho. Betty Zamora was one of the four students in the Alhambra Unified School District to acquire the Alhambra Latino Association (ALA) Scholarship. Her efforts gained her a monetary award of $1000. “From the moment the scholarship came out, I knew the scholarship was for me,” Zamora said. “[When] my mom gave [the mail] to me, I was expecting it to be Riverside or Santa Barbara or some of the colleges I applied to as usual. And as soon as I [saw] ALA, I screamed, [I was] crossing my fingers, and then I just tore it open like a savage and I took the letter out. I just felt really happy that all my hard work was worth it.” According to Zamora, the money will put into paying for her college expenses at University of California, Santa Barbara. Quoc Ho received a scholarship for having the most service hours (50 to 60 hours) in the Red Cross Club. The scholarship itself was from the Red Cross Foundation. “I was surprised because I didn’t even apply, [the club picked me]. It’s going to help me a lot because college is going to be really expensive,” Ho said. Ho will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering and will be attending SLO (Cal Poly) in the fall. Michelle Pham received the Westminster Dean’s Scholarship. According to Pham, this scholarship was worth up to $60,000 and would cover 70 percent of her college tuition. With financial aid, Pham’s family will only have to pay for 10 percent of her total college expenses. “It was a pretty difficult process. In the beginning, I had to get recommendation letters all together early,” Pham said. “I’m planning to save it for my entire college tuition, towards the school in nursing, and towards my double major which is in biology.” Pham will be attending Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah this fall. As these scholarship winners set their eyes toward the future, their advice to their underclassmen is to keep a lookout for any scholarship opportunities.
Xanax meeting spreads awareness to parents, faculty K i m Ta and Vivian Wong In order to spread information about the rise in the use of Xanax as well as other drugs among teenagers, a town hall meeting was held on April 28 at Alhambra High School to discuss this growing epidemic. Xanax (Alprazolam) is a drug that treats anxiety and panic disorders. There is a nationwide epidemic of Xanax. Excessive abuse of Xanax can cause serious complications like paranoid or suicidal thoughts and impair memory, judgment, and coordination. If combined with other substances, it can slow breathing and possibly lead to death. “Xanax is a very addictive drug and it’s closely monitored when prescribed,” school nurse Karen Carrillo said. “The reason it needs to be monitored... is that it causes people to be awake and alert, but partially unconscious.” Carrillo said that being informed can potentially save lives. “Every student should learn about this because if you have a friend, an acquaintance, or a classmate who is having these kind of symptoms, you need to report it right away and you might be saving a life,” Carrillo said. “In actual fact, you can save someone’s life by understanding and knowing about Xanax, so it makes sense for everyone to know about it. Being aware makes you hear things that you would never have heard.” Around 70 parents and faculty attended the meeting. Videos and images were projected to inform parents and school faculty about Xanax’s effects and its symptoms. Some symptoms include drowsiness,
dizziness, blurred vision and more. Assistant Principal of Student Welfare Jocelyn Castro was present at the meeting and said that she wished more parents came. According to Carrillo, the use of Xanax began around the beginning of March, and there have been around 13-18 known cases on campus. The numbers are continuing to rise. “I know of the drug because of how many students have been brought to the nurse’s offices, but also from my peers talking about it,” senior Luis Nunez said. “It’s really a crazy drug, I mean the kids [who] are brought in hardly remember what they did or how they even got there in the first place. It’s sad to see all these kids drugged up.” The school nurse explained her views on the students who are taking the drug. “It’s very alarming as a nurse to see kids using such potent and risky things to feel better. They’re so many better ways to learn how to feel better without using things that can harm your health,” Carrillo said. Nunez stated that there is light at the end of this dark tunnel, and drugs or alcohol is not the answer to any situation. “Whether it’s broken families, bullying, break ups, etc, there’s a way out of it, and I just hope that some kids could realize what they’re doing like I did, because everyone’s here for a reason. Just gotta set your mind on something and don’t stop until you get it,” Nunez said. More information about Xanax can be found on the following sites, which were provided by the Alhambra Police Department in the town hall meeting: <drugs. com>, <webmd.com>, and <urbandictionary.com>.

SG hosts LCAP Expo
Peer Assistants transition from Peer Counseling
J e s s i ca Tran Student displays, presentations, demonstrations, and performances filled the quad area on April 30 in the morning. These activities were all a part of the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Expo, in which approximately 250 people attended. In an effort to shed more light on what the LCAP is and what it does, the Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) organized the LCAP Expo at San Gabriel High School. There, parents and community members learned about the LCAP’s goals, services, and expenditures. The proposal is a vital part of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) which gives each school district an opportunity to connect with parents, educators, employees and the community to establish these plans. Assistant Superintendent Gary Gonzales, Ed.D., states that the LCAP is a formal plan that contains goals, actions and services, as well as budget expenditures. The development of the LCAP requires stakeholder input, and the plan is focused on improving student achievement. Schools and the programs that participated in the expo were asked to display about three to five LCAP actions or services through student performances. For every performance displayed, there was to be a teacher, administrator, or instructional specialist representing that program or service. Additionally, some schools had students present to answer questions about their work. “The expo went very well,” Gonzales said. “All 17 of our schools [in our district] were represented and there were great examples of student work and performances on display.” Many parents and students were active in presenting issues that the LCAP should address. When asked about what LCAP should focus more on, junior Winnie Liang suggested environmental concerns. “If you go to the front of the school, there’s only one trash can,” Liang said. Due to its well-received first attempt, the LCAP Expo may be an annual event.

The 10 new Peer Assistants pose for a photo. Britney Ting After an application and interview process narrowed the number of applicants from nearly twenty to just 10, the new Peer Assistants have been revealed to be sophomore Xochitl Flores and juniors Kylie Tran, Kelly Tam, Ivy San, April Vuong, Jose Lozano, Jennifer Gomez, Hector Hernandez, Samson Tran, and Azucena Pacheco. Peer Counseling is a course that trains students to provide a listening ear to their peers and ask questions in an attempt to help them figure out a solution on their own. In order to become a Peer Assistant, students must have completed both Peer Counseling ½ and ¾ courses. After that, each aspiring Assistant needs to fill out an application and go through an interview process in order to be considered for the position.
‘Noises Off’ showcases students’ acting talent E d w a rd R i v e ra After three months of construction and preparation, San Gabriel High School’s second play of 2016, “Noises Off,” went on, featuring five performances in the auditorium, all of which were major successes. Generally, the audience enjoyed the play as it was made apparent by the enthusiastic applause at the end of each segment, but there seemed to be a common trend of confusion about the beginning of the plot. The plot itself revolves around one main point— a play within a play. The first act of “Noises Off” featured a rehearsal of another play called “Nothing On.” The first act introduced almost all the characters, including the director of “Nothing On.” In act two, however, the plot came into focus as the audience identified each cast member of “Noises Off” as having two roles—one for “Noises Off” (the actual play) and another for “Nothing On” (the play within the play). In the midst of act two, the audience basically experiences the emotional drama behind the stage of one of the performances of “Nothing On” a month after the rehearsal. At this point in the play, the histrionics elicited widespread laughter. Finally, in act three, another month later, the audience enjoys another performance of “Nothing On,” as the play of “Nothing On” hysterically falls apart before our eyes and ends the way it began—with sardines. The physical comedy of the play was genius, notably senior Daymian Castro, playing Gary Lejeune, who effortlessly fell down a flight of stairs. Undoubtedly, the cast was amazing and impeccable, along with the colossal and sturdy two-story set made by Theater Tech. In between acts, the audience applauded as the crew slowly and carefully turned the set around to reveal the “backstage” area. Freshman Lily Cabrera, playing Brooke and Vicky
NEWS
(Brooke’s stage name), made her second appearance on San Gabriel High School’s stage this year. “The play was actually really complicated to understand in the beginning, [but] I [still] got a lot of positive feedback from this play. [The audience] really enjoyed it,” Cabrera said. In addition to the hilarious acting, some of the costumes surprised the audience and elicited cat calls. Assistant Principal of Business and Activities Matt Dultz said when he signed his approval for the play, he only read the script and did not see the costumes beforehand. “One in particular stood out, and I had to ask what kind of approval was given for that. We checked with different administrators; they all seemed to give it the thumbs up,” Dultz said. “I did talk to Mr. Posada. He showed [the actress’s mom] pictures of the costume and she approved. I haven’t received any phone calls or complaints.” Drama teacher and play director Patrick Posada said that they got everything cleared regarding parent concerns and that this has happened before in the theater program. “The play was called ‘Nothing On.’ We got script clearance [and] as long as the parents were on board, we felt okay,” Posada said. While there were a few unexpected developments, the play overall was a success in the eyes of the audience, but in the hearts of the cast it was more than a play. “When I first got here I was kind of shy and it broke me out of my shell performing in front of people. I think it made me a better person and I am more outgoing. Everybody got really close. We even got close to Mr. Posada. We became a big family overall,” Cabrera said.
“The interview process I think is the most nerveracking part, but other than that, it’s pretty easy,” Gomez said. “It’s not so much pressure; you just gotta believe in yourself.” The application asks for the strengths and weaknesses of each applicant, including a portion in which they must evaluate themselves on certain characteristics, such as honesty, from a scale of 1-5. In addition, the applicant must reflect upon what they learned and liked during their past two years in Peer Counseling. “At first, I was like I guess I’ll just do [Peer Counseling] for a year and not continue it,” Samson Tran said, “but after my first year of Peer, I really, really fell in love with getting the satisfaction of helping people.” Although Peer Counseling helps a person overcome conflicts, a Peer Assistant’s aim is not to come up with solutions for the person. Rather, the Assistant asks questions, listens, and encourages the person to voice their thoughts and gradually come up with a solution on their own. In addition to helping students solve their problems, Peer Counseling helps develop an Assistant’s communicative skills on a daily basis by teaching them to ask more open-ended questions when conversing with other people, whether it be for lighthearted or serious purposes. “When you talk to a student there’s always a better way of listening or reflecting or asking questions, and there’s going to be a wide variety of different issues that my students and peer assistants will see,” counselor Solinet Wong said. “What I want for [the Peer Assistants] to gain most is confidence when they talk to students.” As these students transition from being counselors to assistants, they take on new responsibilities that will provide for both their peers and themselves.

Cassandra Chen On my own path For the past three years, I have been desperately trying to avoid fate. Shuffling away nervously during pitches, avoiding eye contact with anyone at any cost, pushing the job onto other people, promising the editors “I’ll do it next month”—I eventually was subjected to write a column for this month. It’s not that I don’t want to talk about myself. In fact, I love talking about myself; I’m pretty great. But to be honest, I’m not interesting at all. I don’t have any insightful advice to give nor have I experienced any drastic life-changing events. My interests are pretty shallow, and my outlook on life is pretty neutral, pessimistic even. I’m practically a hopeless cause when it comes to being deep and inspirational. As a senior, the most interesting thing in my life right now would probably be where I’m going after high school. In about three months, I am going to be moving approximately six hours away for college. Where I am going isn’t exactly a secret, but I will not be putting it in the paper out of pettiness, thanks to a conversation I had with my friend. Disregarding the fact that I’m basically five years old, I will be away from my little Socal bubble that I’ve grown comfortable in and expanding my world, for better or for worse. When people ask why I want to move that far, I hesitate before replying. There are a few things I could say, such as “it’s my dream school” (which is a lie) or “the program for my major there is good” (which isn’t). Neither of them are the real reason. In reality, I simply want to become independent. It’s pretty dumb of me to try to assert something so minor by moving so far. But to me, it is important. If I don’t do this, I don’t think I will ever change. I’d just be reliant on my family or friends and stay as I am, but I can’t depend on them forever. According to America’s standards, I’m 18; I’m already an adult. It is inevitable that I will have to face reality, focus on the future, and ready myself for reality to punch me in the face. If I am going to be punched anyway, I might as well step in the ring and plead to be hit just so I can get it over with. Honestly, I’m not really sure what I’m doing. Currently I am just diving headfirst into the “real world” without thinking it over and hoping I can go with the flow and learn how to adult somewhere along the line. I think this is probably a big mistake on my part, but hey, people learn from their mistakes, right? I’ll definitely be learning a lot. Am I really putting myself in this situation just because I want to grow up? Yeah. Do I have any idea what I’m doing? Nope. Am I stupid? Extremely. Am I prepared? Absolutely not. Will I die? Maybe. But as long as I end up somewhere, I think I’ll be okay.

Letters from the editors High school was nothing like any of the animes I’ve watched. I never ran to school late with a piece of bread in my mouth. I never bumped into a stranger who told me to “watch where I’m going” only to meet again in first period. I never dated said stranger who happened to be the successor of a prestigious company that makes more than $10,000,000 a month. For starters, I would probably die if I ran to school since I live an hour away on foot. In any case, I am not actually delusional enough to think there was any chance of my high school life being like anime. It is not like I expected my experience to be anything more than normal. In fact, it went
by so normally the most exciting thing that happened in my entire high school career was joining journalism. In sophomore year, I blindly joined journalism without knowing what was to come. Never would 15 year old me had expected to win so many awards, travel to a different state, become Editor-in-Chief, cover a teacher’s dismissal that would later become controversial, and start senior year without an adviser. Journalism was definitely a wild ride. There were a lot of twist and turns accompanied by various bumps, not to mention the incredibly high amounts of screaming. But it was fun.
Although it was not what I expected, I was able to experience my anime-like high school life. There was no bread nor a rich stranger, but I managed to become the protagonist of my own anime. But unfortunately, all shows come to an end. Before it all ends, I just want to say thank you. Thank you to my newspaper staff who came along for the ride. Thank you to everyone who has helped me become the person I am today. No amount of thanks can express how grateful I feel, but hopefully, my feelings can be conveyed. And with this concludes my story—thank you.
Nine years ago, Gabriella told Troy: “I gotta go my own way.” I loved that scene. I loved her. I loved Gabriella so much that I wanted to be just like her, and I entered high school expecting to perfectly mimic her experiences. But my life didn’t end up resembling Gabriella’s at all. Yes, my friends: Disney lied to us all. To all of us. Unlike Gabriella, I never became outgoing, joined tons of extracurriculars, or even got a boyfriend. In fact, the only thing that Gabriella and I had in common was that we were both in publications. Well, journalism is a lot more important to me than it was for Gabriella, although many would be shocked to learn
that I don’t actually like journalism. Sure, I enjoy it, but it’s not something I want to do for the rest of my life. Journalism was my three-year commitment, and I gave it my all. I don’t plan to continue journalism after I graduate because, frankly? It’s too hard. Real-world journalism is dangerous, unappreciated, and has very little job security. For someone like me, who needs stability to thrive and would rather not work harder than she has to, it’s just not applicable as a future career. But high school journalism was everything to me. For The Matador, I cried, I fought, I threw myself into situations that I wasn’t
comfortable with, and came out all the stronger for it. I became the Editor-inChief, capital E-I-C, in both name and spirit; or at least, I tried to. I tried to lead and become a better person, and now, when the time has come to swap out my newsboy hat for a graduation cap, I know: despite all the strife I’ve been through because of journalism, it’s only because of my publications family and experiences that I am able to graduate with my head held high. From the bottom of my heart: thank you, journalism, for letting me pass on without regrets.

OPEN LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Teacher, I am writing to you as a San Gabriel High School alumna. As the 2016 school year comes to an end, I would like to leave you, along with the graduating class, with a lesson that I had took with me when graduating high school. I can assure you, however, that this letter was not written from a place of animosity. During my freshman year, you were introduced to me by the San Gabriel Red Cross executive board as an adviser. As an incoming member, my dedication earned me the title of Most Valuable Member. By the end of my sophomore year, I earned myself the Treasurer position and continued to be an active participant for three consecutive years. At the end of my junior year, you took away my ability to become Red Cross president. I would understand if there were a more fitting candidate. However, I was the only member left from the previous executive board and the only one who ran for that position. Still, you, who would not even be an adviser for the following year, got to dictate the way this election would carry out. You forced my name out of the presidency ballot, despite it already winning the executive board vote and more than the majority of general member votes. You then made candidates for the vice president and treasurer positions change their applications, ensuring that I would not receive the title. To lessen your guilt, you offered me the position of Public Relations, to which I declined. Despite my dedication to the organization, recognition of my vigorous efforts by both the executive board and members-at-large, and support for my presidency from the future adviser, you were convinced that you were right. You allowed your own personal agenda to influence the future of organization, rather than to look at facts and numbers. On the day in which the results are announced, the general members glanced at me for a reaction, wondering why the person whose name they had voted for was not once mentioned. Instead, I walked to the new executive board and congratulated them. I did so because I wanted to be the bigger person. While the students looked to you, the adviser, for answers, you did not spare a moment to offer an ex-
planation. Throughout this entire process, you did not once look me in the eye, nor did you offer me an explanation yourself. Instead, you hid behind your questionable actions, and used the executive board as messengers. You did so because while you claimed to be an adult, you failed to act like one. For all of this, I challenge you to offer me an explanation for why you did everything you could to prevent me from becoming president. While you might argue that I am simply making too big a deal out of this entire situation, I would argue that it is wrong for you, as an administrator, to perceive someone’s high school career as “too little.” Every single action that you take has an enormous effect on a student’s future. That being said, I urge you to not wield your authority lightly. I also hope that students will now be able to see the situation in a different light, because the respect that an authority figure thinks they deserve from them should not come from privilege; it should be earned. To the graduating class, I would like to offer you a word of advice. Growing up, we are taught to give adults the respect that they so rightfully deserve. We look up to them because we are told that they will always be fair, trustworthy, and have better judgements. However, in light of recent events at San Gabriel, we should know better than to toss that trust around. Our school clearly has a problem with overpowering and overlooking. Sometimes, it is not we who cannot rise up to the expectations of adulthood and receive recognition we worked hard for. Rather, it is oftentimes adults who cannot perceive us in a different light, who use their authoritative titles as a way to dictate our future the way they see fit. I did not end up where I am by listening to the words of the person whom my letter is directed towards, who only saw me as a lazy, apathetic worker. So when you do encounter individuals like them, continue to work hard. But don’t do it to prove them wrong--do it to prove to yourself that you have been right all along. Sincerely, Annie Huang San Gabriel Class of 2015 Emerson College Class of 2019

Farewell Letter from Coach Kwan
Greetings, I never thought I would be doing this so soon. I was really hoping I would have twenty more years to think about this. It has been a pleasure to be a student, coach, and teacher at San Gabriel High. For 31 years, I have had the greatest time a person can possibly have. I showed up every day, put in a good day’s worth of work, and eventually realized how much I enjoyed it. I would complain and be frustrated but I came back the next day. It only meant that majority of you made being here worth it. To the staff, thanks for the support through the years. It is always fun looking into the stands and see you supporting the teams. I know how much the student athletes appreciated your effort. The counselors—you are awesome, especially Ms. Wong. Remember the first time we met? We can laugh about it now. Luci and Vicky, you do not get enough credit for the work you have to do. Karen Carrillo, congratulations! To the Physical Education Department who took their time to help me grow into the teacher I am today: I learned so much from all of you. Mr. Keller, Mrs. Buchicchio, and Ms. Fujimoto—thank you all for everything you have done for me. I know some of you have gone above and beyond the call of duty to support me through the years. Words cannot
describe my gratitude. The only thing I can do is continue growing and become the teacher all of you can be proud of. To all my Athletic Directors and Eddie, there will never be a group of people who have been so supportive. You made coaching simple. The job you do is not easy. All of you always had my back and I will forever be grateful. Thank you, Mr. Jones and Ms. Hill, for the sacrifices both of you made to help me. To the Volleyball Family, every day with you made the sacrifices worth it. I got to do something I enjoyed on a daily basis and I have all of you to thank for. I want to thank you for letting me be part of your life. You always gave me your absolute best. I wish the best for all of you. I know it will be different at first but time will heal all wounds. For me, you will always be missed and I will look forward to the day that I get to see you. Vicky Ong, I will keep my promise! Mr. Kanow, thank you for letting me be a part of the family and giving me the opportunity to meet such an awesome group of young people. Until we see each other again, Mr. Kwan P.S. Thank you, Ms. Kim, for everything you do for San Gabriel High and the students.

De “man”ding change
Mario Mandujano This is for you As a young Mexican raised in the ‘ghetto’ side of Rosemead, I have witnessed many situations capable of causing trauma. However, I am fortunate enough to have never witnessed a beheading or my family being killed by shells or my local hospital being bombed by an air strike. Thinking about it now, I have not witnessed anything that could stop me from fulfilling my responsibility as a student. I admit to having slacked off a bit during my last two years of high school but not enough to have prevented my admission into a four year university. I am unsatisfyingly proud with the way I end my high school career. I write this in dedication to all those who feel like there is no way from the life other than the one leading to health and success. There is a way. I was adopted by an aunt and uncle in order to become a United States citizen. So legally, her children—my cousins—became my siblings. Among my siblings is an older guy (around 20 years older than me) who played a huge influence in my life and in a sense convinced me not to live a life like him. He is the type of guy who, though not directly affiliated, always hung with a crowd of local gang members. I have been around guns, I have seen cocaine laid right in front of me, and I have witnessed stabbed people barely walking. I have seen young men my age throw their life away, participating in criminal activities. “You can still withdraw yourself from this,” I told a fellow who at the time was a 15-year-old new initiate into the gang life. He answered with a showing of his tattoos, a silent look at his circumstances and, “It is too late.” To me, there is a bad and good menace to society. One destroys the integrity of its city by dealing drugs, mugging, and spray painting nonsense on walls and one acknowledges how the system traps young minorities, spreads that knowledge, and saves the youth from falling into that trap. Whom would you rather belong to? A person who loves something will not be willing to destroy it. I say that to emphasize that showing love for your city is not using taxpayer money to cover unnecessary graffiti or destroying lives by dealing drugs. To love one’s city is to keep it clean, to keep the youth positively inspired, and to keep the environment safe. I do not know how difficult the life of anybody is. I can only make the reminder that there are kids who die crossing borders and traveling hundreds of miles just to be able to have the privilege of sitting in a seat at an American school. It is perplexing how one born into that privilege does not take advantage of it. For as long as education remains free, there is no excuse to not excell. I know what it is like to live with alcoholics. I lost my mother days before my fifth birthday. I have had to work my whole high school career. I know the struggle. What it all comes down to is choices. College is not for everybody and one does not have to attend to be deemed successful. The whole point is to continue to be productive.

Rodriguez pursues career in beauty M a n n y I b a rra It all started when Cassandra Rodriguez was a small little girl who was unable to tie her hair up in a ponytail the way she liked it. Her sister offered to do her hair, but her act of kindness resulted in tangled hair and tight knots. The knots were so badly tangled that poor Rodriguez had no other option but to cut her hair off. After that traumatizing experience, she forced herself to learn how to do her own hair. She liked the results so much that she began working with other people’s hair. “I like to try new kinds of hairstyle and different types of Photo by Manuel Ibarra hair—for example, doing cornrows, soft braids, curls, pin ups, different types of culture—because culture relates to hair a lot,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez enjoys working with different types of hair, which allows her to gain more experience. Being a hairstylist has allowed her to pursue her dream and open her own Insta-
gram account, CASSY_HAIRSTYLING, dedicated to her hair styling career. “I made my Instagram account my freshman year because I thought that maybe if I started my account, people would notice me and would like me to do their hair,” Rodriguez said. Her work is appreciated by her customers, many of whom have put their t ru s t i n t o h e r hands to create the hairdo that they want. She has done girls’ hair for different occasions, including prom, dances, and personal events. People contact Rodriguez through direct messaging or directly to her, and she provides all the supplies needed to give her customers the best result. Rodriguez is pursuing her ambition and attending college to study Cosmetology. Her goal after getting certified as a hair stylist is to be able to work with models and celebrities. What once started as a dreadful event has helped guide her to her future career.

It is said that “Truth is Like Poetry”, But unfortunately the general populace hates poetry, Disregarding the aforementioned negativity for it was only ephemeral, And any other Brobdingnagian word eluded me at the time, The words and phrases I write, Imitate the way silk curtains flow and at the same elicit the same effect on the reader, By concealing the true meaning of words, The intent of derogatory words do not lie within the contents of a dictionary, But lie behind the silk curtain, But it is often misconstrued, Anger for depression, Sadness for sleep deprivation, Again digressing from the truth of the pretext only validates that truth can only be found amongst lies, But even as my thoughts are transcribed to poetry, I still find myself lying, But not to myself, To you the reader, I hide behind this cloak of metaphors and vocabulary to avoid the twisted reality, We all do, Immerse ourselves in our own insanity, entertaining ourselves with a twisted fantasy Alright I’m done with this poem Now back to video games While you go back to Netflix Hypocrites make the best writers by Edward Rivera, 10th
Lockers express Schoolwide Learner Outcomes E m m a n u e l M a resca What use does San Gabriel have for the dusty lockers in the SA building? As an alternative to demolition, lush colors and vibrant expressions now adorn the cool metal of long-abandoned lockers as student artists in Keller’s and Jung’s art classes repaint them to match the academically positive attitude of San Gabriel High School. “We have a lot of hands out here working together to paint these masterpieces.” art and ceramics teacher Karen Keller said. The pieces on different sections of the lockers reflect the new Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, or SLO’s, posted around school to lead students in their academic journey. “We have one on globally minded citizens, environmental concerns, and other parts of the SLO’s,” Keller said. Student artists are bringing their visions to life through a collaborative effort. Each piece in the hallway is carefully sketched, lined, and painted by teams of students. The images on the lockers are symbolic of progressive themes of diversity, universal respect, knowledge, and learning to express oneself. “My piece is about embracing diversity; I think that is important,” junior Erin Vong said. The first of two hallways are decorated with inspiring artwork to motivate Matadors. Next year, future students will have the honor of painting the rest of the lockers in the SA hallway, giving students eye candy for years to come.

LIFE & ART
Squad poses become modern family pictures K i m P ham Family photographs have never given young people many options. Location, outfits, awkward hugging, stiff smiles—all decisions are dictated by parents trying to prove that you are all indeed a family and not just a group of random strangers living under the same roof. You do not get to pick the family photos, and you certainly do not get to pick the family. But in high school you have a say in the classes you take, the sports you play, and, most memorably, the friends you make. Although graduation may seem to mark the end of these relationships, high school squads are crucial to these formative years. Your squad are your go-to people for inside jokes and AP test stress. These people will make fun of you (but only because they like you), and they will buy your Krispy Kreme donuts despite being extremely broke. But with celebrity squads like Taylor Swift posting pictures of her countless famous friends and the easiness of creating a fake persona online, there is a pressure among young people to make it seem like they have a lot of friends. But according to senior Nathan Andrade, genuine squad is a solid friend group that functions, in its way, as a family. “Your squad is like your family away from home,” Andrade said. “and poses are everything. It shows that you all decided to do something together and you’re all in unison.” Searching #squadgoals on social media sites will result in the modern version of the family picture. And every squad picture is a representation of the relationship, built upon a common goal or trait. Every squad may have a signature pose or look, such as a peace sign or an intimidating facial expression. There is always something to signify unification. While #squad may be dismissed as another simple fad of internet linguistics, we should still let take a moment to appreciate the celebration of camaraderie. So when the time of upgrading to college squad comes around, just remember that quality will always trump quantity.

Larry Kanow sits alongside alumni as he watches his final volleyball game as head coach. The game ended with a victory against the visiting Mark Keppel Aztecs. Carolina Loaisiga As the last days of the Larry Kanow and Chris Kwan legacy came to an end, the Matadors’ last league volleyball game against Mark Keppel marked the end of an era. Alumni, past volleyball players, and current students all gathered around to commemorate Kanow and Kwan, celebrating their 20 years of coaching together. The Matadors’ last league game on May 8 was against the Mark Keppel Aztecs, which resulted in a win, leading the boys volleyball team to yet another undefeated season. The celebratory night started with a speech congratulating Kanow and his leadership skills as a coach, marking the end of a great run. The speech also moved on to Kwan, also celebrating his success as a coach, highlighting all his wins throughout his successful 24-year career as a coach. The game started off with a strong lead from the Matadors, leading the scoreboard 12-7. The game kept going in the Matadors’ favor; they won the game in three sets, 24-15, 24-12, and 24-18. Senior volleyball player Peter Ma reflects back on the memories on the court and off, bonding with his teammates and his coaches throughout his four years in volleyball. “It was very emotional for me and my teammates,” Ma said. “But also, it was a very fun night because a lot of alumnus came out to watch us play,” Ma said.

Kakazu’s art displayed at Prepárate Conference in NYC U yen S y Since picking up a paintbrush at the tender age of six, senior Ashley Kakazu began to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. Now, twelve years later, the fruits of her labor have begun to show, with this year seeing her artwork displayed at the 2016 Prepárate conference room in New York City. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Prepárate Conference, Kakazu participated in an art contest called College Board’s Prepárate Conference Call for Artists and placed as one of the top 10 finalists. The contest required artists to create a piece of artwork that represented the theme of academic and creative achievements of the Latino culture. “My work featured Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, an architect and sculptor, but most notably known as an Argentinean human rights activist,” Kakazu said. “He was a professor of architecture and positively influenced the art world with his murals and monuments. He had encountered many struggles in his life, including the death of his mother, poverty, and the Dirty War, but still managed to push through and save his people.” Faced with competition from over 230 other

submissions from around the United States, Kakazu entered the contest with uncertainty. However, with her skillfully created artwork and outstanding interpretation of the theme, Kakazu earned a spot for her artwork in the Prepárate conference room. “I was very surprised that I placed because students taking AP Studio Art were all given the chance to enter. I knew there were a lot of talented students around. Knowing that my art is out there, it’s definitely really cool,” Kakazu said. Virginia Parra, Kakazu’s English teacher in freshman year, attended the conference and was one among the many that got to observe Kakazu’s work. “I was awed by her work as it is very detailed and realistic. I am also proud that one of our own students was represented in this national conference,” Parra said. Along with winning the contest, Kakazu received an art scholarship from the Jeanne Ward Foundation as well. In the future, she plans on committing herself to her art career. “I had the chance to go to New York and Chicago to visit the schools that I got into, but I have decided to stay in California and attend the Art Center College of Design to study graphic design,” Kakazu said. As a passionate artist, Kakazu advises
others to pursue what they want to do because in the end, it will be worth the effort.

Student leader Ma wins paid internship in Washington D.C. S hi rl ey Di nh It is not often that the opportunity to go on a paid trip to Washington D.C. starts through an Instagram photo. After a San Gabriel alumnus shared her photos of her trip to Washington D.C. on Instagram last year, senior Yu Lin Ma immediately took interest. Deciding to follow in the footsteps of the alumnus, Ma applied for a scholarship funded by the Bank of America. After going through the application process, such as listing extracurricular activities, answering questions about participation in the community, and writing an essay, Bank of America selected Ma as a student leader through the Student Leaders Program. This program awards eligible high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity for a paid summer internship with local nonprofits. “I needed money for college, [and] rather than just handing you free money, the program is giving you experience that you could learn and grow from,” Ma said.
“The trip to D.C. was alluring and I’m just a sucker for new experiences.” After finding out that she had been selected as a leader, Ma shared her thoughts on being awarded with this opportunity. “I was surprised mostly, because I was notified way earlier than I thought,” Ma said. “Overall, [I am] happy, because now I don’t have to struggle when people ask me what I’m doing this summer.” Ma stated what she looks forward to and how this trip will help her in her future endeavors. “I’m looking forward to [attending] luncheons and dinners with influential people in government and visiting the White House,” Ma said. “I don’t really know what I want to do in the future, so this is going to help me branch out and get a taste of the government and service sector, and what they do.” From July 10-15, Ma will be in Washington D.C. carrying out her paid internship and will start school at University of California, San Diego in the fall. HOSA, a health care association, will be sending seniors Mary Tran, Yvonne Cui, Katelin Lam,
and Megan Ma, while FBLA, a business organization, will be sending sophomore Justin Phan to nationals. “After they called up second place, I could see Ms. Wu in the audience—she’s our adviser—and she was freaking out with me,” first place winner Ma said. “And then I made nationals and my dad has it on camera and I was freaking out and I was really happy.” Ma, who participated in Extemporaneous Health Poster, had to create a visually appealing infographic based on a topic that was given to her right before the event started. This year’s topic was antibiotic resistance, and using the three hour time limit, Ma created a comic featuring a doctor bear and a patient bear discussing the importance of antibiotic resistance awareness. The other HOSA competitors, Lam and the Cui-Tran team, received silver and bronze in their respective events. Lam participated in Healthy Lifestyle, in which she took a test and submitted a portfolio documenting her efforts toward a healthy lifestyle. Tran and Cui participated in Emergency Medical Technician, in which they took a test and performed a medical skill. For FBLA, Phan won 4th place in Financial Math, an eventinwhichhewastestedonhandlingmoneyandcredit.
“It was kinda nerve-racking [during the test] because there was no air conditioning in [the room], and you’re in a suit,” Phan said. “It’s nerve-racking because you might be sitting next to a first place winner.” HOSA nationals will be held at Nashville, Tenn. from June 22 to June 25, and FBLA nationals will be held at Atlanta, Ga. from June 29 to July 2.

Chef Cruz, Nurse Carrillo retire after decades of service Vi v i a n Wo n g From educating students about food to showcasing their talents, culinary arts teacher Debra Cruz, also known as Chef Cruz, has decided to retire from her teaching career after a dedicated 27 years of working at San Gabriel High School. Prior to teaching, Cruz had a restaurant of her own called Sidney’s Ventura, where she found a greater love and passion for food. She then held cooking classes, which ultimately inspired her to teach culinary arts to students. Throughout the years that Cruz has taught, her favorite memories were the times she interacted with her students, all the experiences she made, and the awards she and her students received. “I’m going to miss all these kids—just seeing everybody grow and advance,” Cruz said. “[I’ll miss] the different backgrounds of how my students cook; I have learned so much myself and it’s been fun to be able to s h a re t h a t w i t h t h e m
and they’re still teaching me.” She will also treasure the Matador Cafés that she organized with her students for 17 years and the commercial kitchen that she had the privilege of using for several years. “I’m going to miss running the Café with all the kids and having them put on their chef jackets and walk around delivering all the beautiful food,” Cruz said. After her retirement, Cruz plans to pursue her interest in crime scene investigation as well as work for and with celebrities, now that she will have more free time. Some celebrities that she worked for previously include Johnny Carson, Olivia NewtonJohn, and Frank Sinatra. “I’ll be doing these cool, private parties with celebrities again…I do a little demo and feed them lunch...I a l s o l o o k f o r w a rd to traveling, I just love it,” Cruz said. Her ultimate wish for her students is for them to work hard, take all the things they learned, and apply it in their everyday lives.
Kelly Ho Nurse Karen Carrillo always knew she wanted to be a nurse—she wanted to help those in need. After graduating 44 years ago, Carrillo began her career in Canada doing direct care in psychiatry; afterwards, she became a director of nursing in home health care, providing specialized, personal care to homebound patients. Later, Carrillo found herself working at San Gabriel High School, where she will now be ending her long career in nursing after 25 years as a school nurse. “It’s time for me to retire, but I honestly could work until I die. It wouldn’t bother me one bit if I worked for another 10 years,” Carrillo said. “[Being a school nurse] is just the most amazing opportunity and role that anyone could play. [It] has never stopped being a challenge; there’s always something more to accomplish at a school.” Throughout her time at San Gabriel, Carrillo has done more than just treat minor headaches and slight fevers. In the late 1990s, she helped organize a “Mental Health Week” that provided workshops giving much-needed support to students, teachers, and parents struggling with issues such as grief,
Seniors offer advice to underclassmen What was your first impression of high school? “I was one of those people who thought high school was going to be scary. My first impression was ‘There are so many people on campus.’ There were so many upperclassmen, and I was scared of them.”
— Anastasia Ramirez
What got you through high school? “My time management wasn’t that great, I just did whatever I liked and procrastinated. However, that was earlier in my high school career. Now, I try to manage everything and space everything out beforehand, but I mainly stay up until one, two, or three in the morning, and wake up at 5 or 6 a.m. for zero period.”
— William nguyen
How did you decide what college you would go to? “It came down to financial aid for me because my family [doesn’t] have that much money. I got accepted to USC, but USC is so expensive, and we just could not afford it. Even if I did want to go, I don’t think I could go. But also, it’s about what the school could offer you and how it’s a good fit for you, because you don’t want to go to a school just for its good reputation. What if you go to Stanford or Harvard, and just hate it there?” Briefs and photos by Anthony Yang

alcoholism, and acceptance of mental illness. With her contributions, Carrillo is undoubtedly a mentor and influential figure to many; however, Carrillo focuses more on the knowledge she has gained from interacting with students. “Teenagers are my favorite people. I say that over and over, but I’m not kidding you. I learn more from teenagers than I could possibly ever teach them in a million years,” Carrillo said. While working as a school nurse, Carrillo also juggled additional jobs; at one point, she worked four jobs at the same time. After much thought, she decided that 2017 would be the year she would retire. “I have so many hobbies and things that I’d love to do,” Carrillo said. “I’m almost 65, so I’ve decided I’d like to get all those other things into my life before I’m gone.” Her hobbies include making jewelry, knitting, and reading. Carrillo expresses that she will always remember the courage that she has seen students carry in face of adversity. “When you’re hurt and you’ve had adults that have done you [wrong] for years and years, you don’t have much reason to trust anybody. For those students to come in here and trust an adult they don’t even know to help them... that has really left an impression on me every day since I came here,” Carrillo said. “That is a thing I will always carry with me—that ability and trust that kids have to be able to change their lives.“ Photos by Sunny Chen
Juniors share goals for senior year adriana Olmos “During my senior year I expect to have a job, as well as my own car. I’m looking forward to only taking five classes and being able to participate in the varsity cheer team.”
alberto garcia “I’m planning on having an easier year aside from the usual stressful classes. I’m looking forward to going to Mexico since I’m probably going to attend school there. What I’m looking forward to the most is leading the band as a senior leader.”
mei chau “I expect senior year to be fun because I will be able to take part in many different classes, but I don’t look forward to the homework load. [However], I [do] look forward to expanding my knowledge in everything. The highlight of my senior year would be my graduation because I would get to see my family members and party.”
Valeria Duran “I expect first semester to be very stressful because of college applications, but hopefully second semester will be more relaxing because I can focus on swimming and passing my AP classes. The highlight of my senior year would hopefully be getting into a college that I want and SIRing to the college of my choice.” Briefs compiled by Manuel Ibarra, Photos by Sunny Chen and Sydney Trieu

Seniors recognized for superb performance Phoenix Award
Renaissance Award
The Phoenix Award was presented to seniors Brenda Chavez and Lee Hernandez, both of whom overcame formidable obstacles and turned their lives around despite their environments. Even though they faced difficult circumstances, Chavez and Hernandez were able to surpass them and move on to a better future. Chavez encountered several difficulties during her years at San Gabriel High School, but her eventual expulsion from school made her realize that she could not live aimlessly. Her biggest obstacle was coming back to school and “trying to fix everything [she] screwed up.” Though the task was daunting, Chavez still motivated herself to bring her grades up by coming to school everyday and dissociating herself from bad influences. “I feel proud of my accomplishments because if I hadn’t been expelled, I wouldn’t be standing here about to graduate,” Chavez said. Hernandez also surrounded himself with some bad influences during his earlier years of high school, and as a result, he had little reason to do well in school. However, during his sophomore year, Hernandez realized that he needed to change his lifestyle because it would not benefit him in the long run. With the help of his girlfriend and family, he motivated himself to try harder in school, made up all his classes, and never gave up no matter how tempting it was. Hernandez gives the underclassmen one piece of advice. “Don’t mess up and keep your head clear from all the drama and keep pushing forward,” he said.
Liu participates in tennis, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Red Cross, Motivating Matadors (MOMA), Courtesy Committee, and National Honor Society (NHS). Wu is involved in badminton, soccer, Red Cross, Do Something, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Peer Counseling. Both Liu and Wu have demonstrated leadership skills in their sports and clubs. The Renaissance Award was presented at the Academic Pep Rally to acknowledge two top model students. This award is given out to students who have shown dedication and commitment outside of their academics and contributed to their school through club service and extracurricular activities. Teachers and administrators nominated seniors Leo Liu and Annie Wu to receive this prestigious award.
Perfect Attendance Award
Athletic Scholar Award As a proficient player in both badminton and soccer, senior Annie Wu was awarded the Athletic Scholar Award. Along with being self-motivated to acquire good grades in school, Wu also maintained a strong work ethic, being the captain of the girls soccer team. “I was really happy and proud because I know the award means a lot [to me] and I know my hard work and sleepdeprived days were worth it,” Wu said. “Since I love both badminton and soccer, playing [sports] help me forget about all the homework and projects in school.” Wu has been in the varsity soccer team for her entire high school career as one of its best midfielders and has also participated in
CIF for badminton while also obtaining a 4.6 GPA from freshman to senior year. Senior Austin Tien was also awarded the Athletic Scholar Award for his efforts in varsity basketball and varsity volleyball. Throughout his high school career, Tien played a significant role in both his basketball and volleyball teams, while maintaining a GPA average of 3.9 from sophomore to senior year. Upon learning that he had won this award, Tien was “shocked.” “I just tried my best to balance out sports and school,” Tien said. Tien has played basketball for three years, but he is known for his prowess in volleyball, where he has contributed to deep CIF runs with coach Chris Kwan.
Going to school is not the hardest thing to do in the morning; it is getting up. But to five seniors, it was no big deal. Seniors Sylvia Diep, Steven Le, Quyen To, Tiffany Tran and Lisa Zhou were celebrated for a record of perfect attendance during their four year career at San Gabriel. Achieving perfect attendance during four years consists of hard work and commitment on part of the students, not missing a single day of school, through sick and healthy days. Senior Tiffany Tran felt happy about her accomplishment. “I think it’s really cool that it exists, and I’m glad that I got a ribbon to show for it,“ Tran said. The perfect attendance seniors received a sash during Academic Pep Rally and a certificate congratulating these five seniors for their outstanding accomplishment.
