J u d y Ta n g Over 100 outstanding San Gabriel High School students and their respective families crowded into the auditorium on May 19 for the annual senior scholarships and academic awards ceremony. The evening began with a welcome by Principal Jim Schofield and an introduction of guests and presenters by Assistant Principal John Scanlan. Presenters included Marisa Castro-Salvade from Southern California Edison, Ronnie Donfrio, Richard Klutts of the Eastside Optimist Club, Stan Yonemoto from the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, Peter Robb, Beth Price representing the National Charity League of San Marino, Dr. Denver R. Foster from the San Gabriel Kiwanis Club, Teresa Ybarra of the Alhambra Latino Association, Ariadna Banuelos, Diana Hyland, and Roger Majano, from Hillcrest, San Gabriel, and Alhambra Council PTA, respectively. The presenters honored various students of academic achievement, club involvement, and other qualities with scholarships that ranged from $250 to $40,000 in awards. The San Gabriel High School PTSA presented seven seniors with scholarships including Johnny Diep, Brandi Huynh, Stella Low, Natalie Ma, Christian Majano, John Truong, and Man Nong. “I am so glad that my hard work of applying to scholarships finally paid off, and [I] really felt

this sense of achievement,” Low said. The Alhambra Latino Association and UCLA University Grant both gave senior Kevin Loya generous amounts in scholarship, as did the Southern California Edison Scholarship with senior Jestin Ma. In memory and honor of the late John Robb, Peter Robb presented Karissa De La Trinidad and Ngoc Tang with the John Robb Memorial Scholarship. “I feel so blessed [to have received the award], I feel kind of connected to [Robb] now,” Trinidad said. After all scholarships were awarded, the Athletic Achievement Awards were given to seniors Henry Akuna, Man Nong, Jennifer Ngo, Angie Lin,Vanessa Linares, and Charlie Diep, and the Bausch & Lomb Award was presented to junior Hui Fu. Individual department awards were then given out to exceptional students of all years, including freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students in different years and subjects were given certificates for being academically outstanding, compared to peers in their respective years. The evening ended with the presentation of cords and stoles from many clubs and organizations on campus including the International Thespian Society, National Honor Society, AVID, the Business and Technology Academy, Speech and Debate, Academic Decathlon, Medical Careers Academy, Associated Student Body, and CSF.

Janet Perales, Timothy Hopper leave San Gabriel High School H anf rey Deng and Tr an Lam Next school year, Assistant Principals of Student Services Janet Perales and Timothy Hopper will be leaving San Gabriel High School. Perales will become an Assistant Principal at another Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) school, while Hopper will leave the district to find a position closer to his home. Perales was offered her new position just a few days ago and feels “bittersweet.” “I’m excited for the possibilities,” Perales said. “I’m excited for the things that I can implement with the new principal, but I’m also saddened because I’ve made good friends here. I’ve connected with students, staff, and I’ve had a great administrative team. And I’ve worked very well with our resource officers, so I’m leaving with a lot of experience.” Perales will be utilizing her previous knowledge of teaching and counseling from her past years in the district. Perales feels “very prepared” for her new position at a K-8 school. “I’ve had the experience as a teacher in the elementary level,” Perales said, ”and I’ve had experience [as] the counselor, and [with] the discipline portion [of] school safety at the high school. And I think that if you can be an effective leader of those things at the high school level, it’s going to be so much easier to implement at the elementary level because there’s a smaller school setting and there are younger kids.” Hopper will become an assistant principal at another school located closer to his home. Working at San Gabriel, Hopper takes one hour to commute to work from his home in the Inland Empire, and two hours to

Poetic words echoed off the Multipurpose Room walls on May 16, when San Gabriel High School and Alhambra High School students competed in the Poetry Slam. The San Gabriel Young Aspiring Writers with Power (YAWP) shared the room with the Alhambra Moors Poet Society (AMPS) in a classical slam, where writers recited a classical poem and then responded with an original poem. The two schools battled for three rounds before YAWP was crowned victorious. YAWP member senior Jesus Meza felt very comfortable in the event. “I saw the event as a place where everyone can tell a story—a story about what we’ve seen, been [through], and done,” Meza said. The members of the YAWP team took their frustration, anger, and sadness and turned those negative emotions into a beautiful set of verses and stanzas where they poured their thoughts out to the world.

return every day. This situation is further complicated by his eight-hour work day. “I am immensely grateful for my time at SGHS,” Hopper said. “The staff is an outstanding group of solid professionals and our students have had a great year.” Hopper hopes that the Matador staff and students will continue to grow and take care of each other. “Most of our Matador family shows their quality day in and day out,” he said. “I will miss being a part of such a great place! I hope the students will remember to always be kind to each other.” Principal Jim Schofield acknowledges that change is inevitable and is glad that Perales is given the opportunity to take on more responsibility as an elementary assistant principal. “Student Services is probably the administrative position in the school district that [you] see the most change over,” Schofield said. “People work in a position and then that builds their experience for other opportunities. She has an opportunity to be an assistant principal of a K-8 school in our district and will eventually be a principal. There’s a lot more responsibility that comes with that, which is good.” Coming to take their positions will be current Assistant Principal of Student Services at Troy High School, Richard Peterson and current Alhambra High School Assoiciated Student Body (ASB) adviser and biology teacher, Jocelyn Castro. Castro was also 2013 Teacher of the Year for the AUSD. Although Hopper and Perales’ time at the school will come to an end, this opens a new chapter to their lives and marks a new beginning for the students of San Gabriel.

Article follow up: “Teachers speak out about power outage”

Matadors showcase their dancing skills Lauren Kakazu

E ri n Tru ong and A my Yee Editor’s note: We heard the criticism about our article “Teachers speak out about power outage” (April 30, 2014). We went back over the story and decided that there were facts and issues that needed to be highlighted. Here they are.

The source of the power outage as identified near the school’s main gate is in dispute. According to a phone interview with Southern California Edison (SCE) conducted on May 20, the blackout was caused by downed utility poles located on Ramona and Main Street, with the affected boundaries being West Las Tunas Drive, West Angeleno Ave., and West Mission Drive. SCE could not (by press time) confirm if there was a downed pole near San Gabriel’s main gate or not. The power outage started at 5:43 a.m. and ended at 5:38 p.m.. In the article, teacher Sabrina Morales asked about the accessibility of the school’s safety plan. California Education Bill SB 187 requires every school to have an annually-updated hard copy of the plan on campus. According to Principal Jim Schofield, San Gabriel keeps its copy in his office and there is an additional copy at the District offices. As such, there was a safety plan on site during the power outage. However, according to Morales, the teachers did not have a copy on hand because the faculty handbook is electronic and was unavailable due to the outage. Morales stated that she was worried about working fire alarms and the monitoring of restrooms, which were a safety risk due to lack of lighting. However, according to Schofield, “there [were] backup generators that power the campus for a certain amount of time.” These generators powered the school’s fire alarms and emergency lights. “If you look[ed] at the alarms, the lights were on every fire alarm—just like how there were some lights on in classrooms,” Schofield said. San Gabriel staff also organized a “fire watch” monitoring the campus area. “Had there been a fire anywhere on campus, we would have been to the classrooms almost as immediately as the bell would have sounded,” Schofield said. He also stated there were “extra eyes” patrolling the campus and frequent classroom visits as security measures. At the Board of Education meeting on April 22, Captain Elliot Case of the Alhambra Police Department commended San Gabriel High School for how it handled the power outage with the police department. In the article, Schofield said students needed to remain at school because of state mandated minutes. Later, he discovered that the school could have taken the day off because it had more than enough minutes–378 more minutes–to meet secondary instructional minute requirements for the year. Despite the controversy surrounding the management of the blackout, Schofield asserts he is very proud of how students dealt with the sudden situation and carried on as if it were a standard day.

After spending months of preparation, the Choreo Dance team held their annual Dance Showcase to perform for their friends and families. Choreo, along with All-Male and Cheer, performed past rally routines from the entire school year. The showcase, normally held in the Matador Arena, was held in the auditorium on May 16. “I think the showcase looks better on a stage,” senior Cheer member Desiree Espinosa said. “ Choreo and All-Male members had the opportunity to perform either a solo or a duet, such as freshman and first year Choreo member Sharon Lee who performed a solo. “I was nervous and skeptical but decided to do it anyway because it was a chance to go out and show everyone that I love to dance and I’m not afraid to show it,” Lee said. Some of Choreo’s performances were competed against other schools at three SHARP competitions. Their Spring Rally routine placed first in the March competition, their Homecoming routine placed first at the December and May competitions, and their Hip Hop competition routine placed first at the March and May competitions. “I liked the Homecoming pom routine because I feel like it had the most energy and facials,” senior Tiffany Heng said. Towards the end of the showcase, Choreo and Cheer took a moment to recognize their senior members for their last performance at San Gabriel. The following seniors were recognized: Aileen Hang, Christina Le, Crystal Tang, Desiree Espinosa, Destiny Alvarez, Kimberly Garcia, Lauren Kakazu, Marisa Benavidez, Megan Molina, Michelle Sy, Sammantha Ruiz, Sandy Ho, Teresa Vera, Thu Nguyen, Tiffany Heng, Tiffany Tran, and Yvonne Guerrero. The showcase ended when Choreo announced next year’s Choreo captains and leaders. Junior Amber Dykeman and sophomore Penelope Hernandez were chosen as co-captains and sophomore Trista Rios and freshman Sharon Lee were chosen as leaders. “I felt really happy and amused,” sophomore Penelope Hernandez said. “I started crying because I felt grateful to have that spot given to me.”

Matador Band goes regional Kr isty Duong The Matador Marching Band earned an excellent rating at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) regional festival at Colony High School in Ontario on May 16. They were presented with this opportunity to compete at the regional level after receiving a superior rating for the first time in 13 years at the band festival at Montebello High School. From lowest to highest, ratings range from poor, fair, good, excellent, and superior. The band was judged based on categories including sound, intonation, fundamentals, and musicianship. The band’s musical selections included “Music for a Ceremony” by John Morissey, “Fantasia on a Theme” by Thomas Tallis, and “Ascend” by Samuel Hazo. “It was an honor to be chosen to be there,” band director Tammy Cognetta said. “It says a lot about what these kids have done and how much practice they put in.” For the site-reading portion of the

competition, the band played “Spring Festival Overture” by James Hosay. The band director was given four minutes to go over the piece with the band, noting important points like tempo changes, dynamics, and key signatures before the band had to play for the judge. “This festival was more serious and bigger compared to [the one at Montebello],” trumpet player Jennie Lim said. “It was more intimidating being at a school with bands that all received superior ratings.” The band faced difficulties in scheduling rehearsals with Advanced Placement (AP) testing occurring the two weeks prior to the competition date and the Monterey Park Play Days Parade on the day following festival. Despite this, it still provided band members with a valuable experience. “I felt that the band’s performance was better than expected, since [many of us] had to split our time [between] practicing for festival and doing other things,” junior Celine Hui said. “[We] could [have] improved, but we gave it our all, and that’s all that matters.“

OPINIONS “Sonny” days are here

Sonny Hy Living on a permanent ‘Hy’ I remember the first time I called 911. I also remember the second, third, and fourth time because they were in a span of two days. The cul-de-sac of Hispanic and Asian neighbors stood in their windows and listened and watched, curtains drawn but eyes peeping, as I and the others in my family fended off our father. Wildly wielding his knife and threatening to pull his gun out, he screamed about how everyone in the neighborhood was going to die in the center of the neighborhood, especially the old woman who came out to speak to him. “What are you doing? You’re insane!” she said, only to be countered with Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Mandarin cuss that consisted of murdering her and her family in various different words. He ran up the staircase and before I knew it, he was banging on my door. He pleaded with me to run away with him; he would take me away from all these horrible people like his wife or other children. The operator told me to lock the door, close the windows, and place my chair under the door knob, securing my safety. However, my safety didn’t come with sanity. I listened as he screamed, hurled, and eventually broke down my mother’s bedroom door. “What is your location?” The operator calmly asked and I giggled and answered. At the time, I even asked myself why I was giggling. I was going insane, or maybe I wasn’t. “The officers are on their way; is he still screaming? Where is he now?” The policemen came into the house and arrested him. He got out of jail in one hour and came back. By this time I was shocked not by his appearance, but that I would have to call 911 again. He still had the keys to the house and the key to my mother, opening the door for him because she “forgot.” Round 2 went down just as round 1 went, then round 3, and round 4, until finally I had a restraining order in my hand. I don’t miss my father; he was a broken man in my life and anyone who tried to touch him was cut. His track-marks and rotten teeth correlated with the cloud of marijuana in his eyes, but my mother didn’t seem to mind. The only thing in her mind was a hurricane that I inherited. I see myself in my mother more than anyone else; she fell apart and will never come back together, but that’s where we’re different. My life is the gift she gave me, but that gift was sealed when my door was. I don’t miss my family because how do you miss something that you never had? I don’t regret being born into these circumstances; it was something beyond my control. However, my family will not define who I am; I define who I am. My window will never be open, but I can still see through it. Now, I’m on the other side.

Letters from the editors Left, right. Up, down. Dazed by the abundance of opportunities and amazing people, I felt like a mouse in a maze as I made my way through high school: lost. I ventured off and attempted to explore as many corners as I could. I pulled myself one way and then completely in the opposite direction, never really feeling like I knew myself. Never really feeling like I was doing what I wanted to be doing with my high school career. I had a desire to be one with the people of San Gabriel by teaching them, learning from them, understanding them, and ultimately being a companion. This role I envisioned myself embrac-

ing was fulfilled by my entrance onto the newspaper staff. It was not until this year that I realized what these pages with ink majestically splattered across them could not only do for the school, but for me. Being part of the newspaper staff essentially captured everything about high school and put it in a jar for my taking. These words here are a message of thanks, a message that I hope is accepted with the warmth that I felt upon encountering high school. As I leave you San Gabriel, I can only hope that I gave you as much as you gave me. Thank you for taking my sleeping time away, and instead allowing me to live my life awake and

doing homework, activities for clubs, or socializing. Thank you for allowing me to make friends, see people smiling, and encounter those awkward hellos where you do not know if the person is waving to you. Thank you for letting me cover your stories and the 2,500 different faces you have. High school was an ultimate testing ground for discovering who I wanted to be, and who I did not want to be. I was able to live, laugh, and love. I allowed my high school life to be free, action-packed, and full of no regrets.

Walk on, or be walked on. Change, or be changed. Love and be loved—or lose out and be lost in this four-year opportunity bank we call “high school.” Cash in on the goodies, or check out. Your choice. From the “freshman moments” of wondering where to sit during lunch to the “I could care less” bum days of senior year, high school has always been a great puzzle for me. My thoughts wind back to wondering what classes I would take, or who my closest friends would be, or where I would fit in at this overwhelmingly scary school. What ifs clouded my horizons; fear rose with the sun every morning. At this school of 2,500 students, I remember feeling both completely sur-

rounded, yet completely alone all at the same. Thanks to the many clubs, teachers, and activities at San Gabriel, however, my tomorrows became a bit clearer. Without journalism, I would never have developed as much confidence in my writing, nor would I have decided that I would pursue a career in writing and journalism. Being the Editor in Chief taught me to see things from a different perspective, to be a leader, and to seize the moments we can never reclaim before they are forfeited to the hands of Time. I am so proud that I could witness my newspaper team win second place 9-12 page broadsheet at the National

Journalism Convention in San Deigo. I saw with my very own eyes that hard work and determination can amount to something I could be proud of—a feeling that is clear as glass. So thank you, journalism, thank you teachers and staff, and thank you mes amis—vous etes immortel dans mon coeur. You are all immortal in my heart. Though graduation sounds like heaven right about now, I will definitely remember and miss my memories on the grounds of San Gabriel. I will walk down the aisle a new and changed person who embraces tomorrow with outstretched arms.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Multicultural point-of-view I read with interest two student points of view on the high school literature curriculum: classic vs. contemporary. (“Classic literature VS Contemporary fiction,” April 30) As an SG English teacher for seven years now, I would like to add a third way to view this debate by redefining classic and contemporary with a multicultural focus. First let’s define classic: considered important and of high quality, with a value that lasts a long time and contemporary: belonging to the present time, modern, or as described by Sonny Hy, “literature as a manifestation of life at the time of its writing.” Next we need to ask the questions: Who decides what is classic? What is “the present time?” An honest look at the authors mentioned in both columns (Sylvia Plath, Aldous Huxley, Kate Chopin, John Green, Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Joyce Carol Oates) is that they are all of European/Caucasian descent. To go back to Sonny’s definition, do these works, classic or contemporary, reflect the lives of our students and their families, past, present or future? Is it just coincidental that nearly all of the classics that are required reading for our students are Caucasian, European and mostly male? A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry was the first play written and performed on Broadway by an AfricanAmerican playwright in 1961. It details the struggles of a black family in 1950’s Chicago to find their place in a racist

society just beginning to climb out of the lynch mob mentality of the Old South. From a multicultural perspective, it is a classic by every meaning of the word and continues to be performed, most recently starring acclaimed actor Denzel Washington, once again on Broadway. Its themes and character development are just as classic as anything Tennessee Williams or Arthur Miller wrote during the same time period. It represents a culture in transition from an African-American perspective. Jeanne Wakatsuki-Houston wrote Farewell to Manzanar about one of the most disgraceful periods in American history when 110,000 west coast Japanese Americans, the majority U.S. citizens, were forced into concentration camps from 1942-1945. Published in 1973 but covering the period of 1941-1946 when the U.S. was at war with Japan, it is an intimate look at the resilience of one of our most wronged immigrant populations. Rudolfo Anaya is considered one of the founders of contemporary Chicano (Mexican American) literature. His novel Bless Me Ultima, much like A Raisin in the Sun is about a family and a culture in transition and is rich with magical realism, vivid imagery, fascinating characters and theme development and is as much a coming-ofage story as To Kill A Mockingbird. Many of my students have reported a culturally rich and eye opening experience with reading both Bless Me Ultima and Farewell to Manzanar. All three books are in our book room and can be had for the asking. English Teacher Terri Waits-Smith

Lauren Kakazu Perks of being a wallflower About four years ago, I stepped onto campus as a short and shy freshman with bangs. Now as a senior, I’m still short and I still have bangs, but I’m less shy. Looking back, I have always been a shy individual. I was afraid to get out of my comfort zone and I couldn’t take risks. I was one of those people who sat in the back of the classroom, hoping that the teacher wouldn’t pick me to read aloud or ask me to answer a question. I was a wallflower. I think everything changed in junior year when my parents and friends convinced me to try out for the Choreo Dance team and apply for the newspaper staff. There was a high chance that I wouldn’t get into either one, but I told myself that it wouldn’t hurt just to try. If I had never taken those risks, I would never have made it into both and I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. As senior year came around, I found myself gradually changing. When I was given an editor position on the newspaper staff, I had more responsibilities. Through this position, I had to communicate with the members on the staff and I slowly became comfortable with them. Now, I consider most of them good friends. After that, I took more chances and became braver. A year ago, I never would have known what I was capable of. Also, when I began my second year in Choreo, many of the new members, who were underclassmen, looked up to me. I would help them improve on their dancing and techniques. Most of them called me “Mama Lauren” which made me feel loved and needed. In my last two years of high school, I have made so many friends who have changed me for the better. They made me realize that I can be a confident person who doesn’t have to be afraid to take chances. They’ve made my high school years so worthwhile and memorable. I can’t tell them how grateful I am for them being a part of my life. The only thought in my mind now is, “What happens after graduation?” Right now, all I know is that I’ll be leaving home for college and live on my own in the fall. Honestly, I’m terrified. I don’t really know what will happen once I leave. For all I know, I can get lost trying to find all of my classes or have a roommate that could be an axe murderer. I may be overreacting but the idea of me leaving home scares me enough to paralyze me. Then I remember that I’m not the shy little girl that I used to be. I’m now a confident person who became an editor on the newspaper staff and had the guts to ask two guys to Sadies and Prom. These accomplishments may seem like little things to others but for me, it was a big step towards becoming the person that I want to be, a short person who takes big chances no matter what the risks are.

However, this is no ordinary concert; the main event here features only electronic music. Contrary to what most people believe, creating electronic music is an art that requires knowledge and mastery accumulated over time. People unfamiliar with this topic often assume that it does not require any technique to produce music on computer software, claiming that it is not as emotive or skilled as music produced with traditional instruments. This could not be further from the truth; producers must go through an extremely complicated process that consists of many time-consuming steps. Electronically produced music transcends acoustic music by constantly creating new worlds of sound that cannot be explored

Electronic music is universal; it surpasses language barriers and allows people of all languages to appreciate the Vocals and lyrics may not play a large part in most electronic pieces, but this is hardly a reasonable premise on which to completely reject a particular genre. The sounds produced on computers and synthesizers do not need lyrics to express their meaning. People who enjoy and understand this type of music are able to translate the beats and rhythms into emotions that the producers are trying to introduce and express to their audiences. Electronic music invokes particular emotions that are unable to be experienced when listening to many other genres of music. One should not judge an entire genre of music based on a few songs on the radio that do not even completely represent the entire electronic music genre. There are a myriad of sub-genres within the all-encompassing term “electronic music,” and each sub-genre presents a uniquely different sound that appeals to a wide spectrum of audiences; no single sub-genre can typify another. Electronic music is much more than beats synthesized on a computer; electronic music is the future.

when you can’t accept the fact that you already are... I know that I’m going to not be with you I know that I will never be perfect unless you see me that way I know that everyone has flaws and imperfections.... but you are perfect in my eyes... Perfect can only be achieved in the Eyes of the Beholder. I know that there’s no point of trying
I know it’s pointless I know there’s one thing that will never be that is me ever regretting to love you, even though I knew that you would never love me back.

Tick tick. Da doo doo da da, da de de doo da. CRASH! Do you know what song this is? No worries, we have no idea either. Sure, this song could pass as music, but without lyrics, this medley of rhythms, screeching, bass, and squeaks should be considered a piece, not a song. Naturally-produced music is supposed to have lyrics to help amplify their meaning. Simply having a myriad of noises without any words would leave it without a clear and tangible message. While synthesized music, such as Electronic Dance Music (EDM), dubstep, trance, and hardhouse, can evoke a unique set of emotions within a listener, it cannot create the same bond that lyrical songs do with its audience. After a few listens, song lyrics become more than just words echoing in our heads; lyrics become a part of us. Powerful song lyrics can save a person from inner turmoil and encourage them to see things in a new perspective. “[Synthesized music] is nice, but songs with lyrics allow me to sing along and these songs actually have meaning,” sophomore Terri Tang said. In a naturally produced song, work is not only put into creating a pleasingly melodic song, but also into the actual lyrics that dif-

ferentiate the song from simply a musical composition. Songwriters put their heart and soul into creating lyrics that will meld with the music and bring out the message the singer is trying to express. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis promoted marriage equality with their popular song “Same Love” that expresses a powerful message behind a relaxed rap style. Beginning with the first lines, “When I was in the third grade, I thought that I was gay,” the song contains poignant lyrics and relatable experiences that cannot be equivocated with synthesized music—only lyrics can relay such an inspirational message. Music used to be recorded in a soundproof studio, where musicians would jam out with their instruments and voices. It was a long and arduous process that required the musician’s time, dedication, sense of perfection, and passion. However, the most important factors of creating synthesized music are a producer, a computer, perhaps a featured singer or two, and creativity—not as much soul or personality involved. Poems can be songs and songs can be poems, but entirely synthesized music falls nowhere between this spectrum. It is in its own realm and should stay there. Even if synthesized music is starting to displace lyrical songs, the strong connection that lyrics provide will never be lost in the rhythm.

LIFE &ART

Chhea, Pham follow artistic aspirations I l e a n a P e re z

Hand-drawn art reflects personal style Drawing with the same rustic tools that artists have been creating masterpieces for thousands of years, hand-drawn artists set to work on sketching their newest creations. Art done by hand is a preference of many for it’s versatility and overall better control over movement or strokes. With a variety of different textures of paper to draw on and a collection of pens or pencils, drawing with paper and pencil invokes a sense of organic creation. Theres something truly satisfying with admiring finished work and closing a filled and worn sketchbook with pencil stained hands. Hand-drawn art is also appealing in the aspect of being able to return and touch up those pictures later whenever needed. One pleasing aesthetic of hand drawn art is the reality of it, hours of hard work on a piece being shown through intricate strokes of the brush or blots of watercolors. Whichever medium, or materials used in drawing, can be seen in every inch of a masterpiece. Take still life scenes for example. An amazing and apparent air presents itself about a painstakingly crafted scene, with layers upon layers of planning and sketching. The struggle in hand-drawn art could be cleverly polished to make it seem as though it is easy, whereas in reality the artist must start with a sketch and then the linework and the color until their artwork is perfect. In this versatile practice, the hand and technique create images that intrigue viewers

and fill their artists with joy at the hard work paid off. No other way produces inherent results and are not nearly as fun. Using pencils, pens, brushes, pastels, and charcoal are enjoyable art mediums used to capture the artist’s vision. The vast amount of tools and tactics present in the world of hand-drawn art is incomparable in it’s required dedication and aesthetics, and any individual artist’s style could be expressed with evident effort and majesty. Both seniors Helen Chhea and David Pham have decided to major or minor in their passion: the arts. Pham, spent his first three years in high school, playing volleyball. It was not until his senior year, that he began doing drama, which he soon realized he greatly enjoy being a part of. His older brother influenced him to go into drama, by telling him how he enjoyed the experience when he would perform. “My brother had a big influence on me,” Pham said. He always told me to do drama, do theater, and when I actually tried it, I was like I really like doing this.” Pham, will minor in theater while majoring in another subject, which he is still deciding on. Pham feels that a career in theater could be risky, which is why he has decided to minor in it. Also, Pham feels that he cannot put all his time and effort into acting since it is a risky career, however he is willing to take the risk since it is his passion. “Part of me has to be realistic,” Pham said. “That is why [I am] minoring in theater.” Chhea is planning to major in theater and minor in musical theater. Chhea loves to perform, and believes that performing is a big part of her identity. Chhea has been told multiple times that it is a risky career, but her passion for theater has convinced her the risk is worth taking. “I might not make it,” Chhea said. “But I would rather lead a life that I am happy and not

[make] a lot, versus a job where I am totally unhappy but making a lot.” Chhea decided she wanted to major in theater when she performed for the first time. Chhea loves the feeling of being on stage and entertaining the audience. Also, Chhea was inspired to go into theater by all the great movies and actors there are. “I like performing,” Chhea said. “It is like the best feeling in the world.” Although both Pham and Chhea are aware of the risks involved with such a career, they feel it is worth it. Their love for the theater and the arts has convinced them that no matter what the risk are they should not let go of their pass i o n . The y both believe that if you truly love something the you should go for it.

Digital art takes on modern world Cassandr a Chen As technology advances, people continue to search for easier ways to do things, including art. Albeit not exactly an “easier” way to create art, digital art has swept many off their feet with its moderately simplistic and user-friendly mediums. Traditional art may have been the norm for thousands of years, but digital art will leave its mark on history as the superior form of contemporary art. Digital art is extremely convenient for many artists; rather than meticulously erasing a single line that is out of place, taking the risk of erasing a wrong line or wrinkling the paper, a simple click of “Ctrl+Z” will do the trick and undo the mistake. Plus, each art medium provides a spectrum of colors to use when coloring artwork, so there is no need to pull out a pack of 12 color pencils and struggle to find the perfect color for a piece. Furthermore, there are unlimited possibilities when it comes to digital art--an infinite number of brushes that one is able to fully customize, the ability to adjust the hue or saturation of a painting to one’s liking, the power to move and transform a limb that looks different from the rest of a drawing, et cetera. Digital art is limitless. Although there may be many perquisites of digital art, there are some downfalls as well, such as the necessity of a computer and maybe even a tablet to utilize an art medium to its fullest. Making the choice to upgrade to digital art may be costly, however, that

does not affect freshman Victoria Le’s preference for digital art. “With digital limited, you can be bold, and you don’t have limited amount of resources,” Le said. “And once you acquire a tablet or art program, you’re good to go for a long time.” Some may frown upon digital art, not considering it as “real art.” However, digital art is much more than merely relying on the program—it requires skill and patience as well. Just because a piece is done digitally does not mean less effort was put into work. Traditional art will still be the most common type of art, but in this day and age, digital art will surely go down in history. Perhaps it is time to switch from drawing with a typical pencil to a tablet pen instead.

Lam makes headway in badminton Baseball paves way to CIF after 16 years CIF for second consecutive year John Tr uong

I l e a n a P e re z Passionate badminton player since a young age, senior Tuan Lam made it to California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) for the second year in a row. Lam has been on the badminton team since his sophomore year; however, he played badminton while he was living in Vietnam. Lam moved from Vietnam in the eighth grade, and since then, he has tried his best with school and accomplished so much. “I wanted to get involved in high school,” Lam said. “And badminton is the sport I used to play, so I decided to join the team.” This is Lam’s second year of going to CIF, and he will also compete in the CIF individual. The badminton team made it to semi-finals,

which is further than last year. Lam and his partner got first place in mixed doubles and second place in doubles. “It is seriously a great accomplishment to make it to CIF, and especially this far,” Lam said. Despite their loss in the semi-finals, Lam is proud to have made it this far and feels he has accomplished something. He feels like he has fulfilled his senior year by these great accomplishments. Lam will attend UC Irvine next fall and major in electrical engineering. While Lam is attending UC Irvine, he plans to join their badminton team so that he could continue playing Lam is thankful to have a great coach and teammates that have helped him throughout the years.

It has been exactly 16 years since the boys San Gabriel varsity baseball team has qualified for contention in the annual California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section playoffs. The Matadors had a rough time in recent years as the program underwent several key changes. In the last four years, there has been constant construction on several baseball fields San Gabriel had to offer. Players were also ineligible to play because of poor academic performance and there has been several coaches who had come in and out of the program. Three seasons ago, San Gabriel High School hired Head Coach Chuy Pinado to coach the struggling Matadors. His illustrious resume includes his entrance into the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft and playing in Nippon Professional Baseball, which is the Japanese counterpart to the United States’ MLB. Pinado has been credited by players for changing the team’s fortunes. “We started off the pre-season really slow, going 0-6 with no wins,” senior Diego Cortez said. “Season came along and we just picked up our pace.” This season, the baseball team placed third in the Almont League, qualifying for the CIF playoffs. Key games this season included their win over Division I Alta Loma High School, who won the Dick’s Sporting Good’s tournament, and a blowout win against Schurr High School.

“This was just a turnaround season for us because in the past three years I was with the team, we placed last in league,” senior pitcher Daniel Guerrero said. “I think what we did this year that was different from [year’s past] was that my team had such good chemistry.” Indeed they did; the varsity team went at lengths to develop their team chemistry through various means. For example, in the winter of 2013, the entire varsity team decided to dye their hair blonde in order to keep cohesion within the team. This season, three Matador baseball players, Cortez, Guerrero, and Ryan Arias, are currently being scouted by several teams, include the University of La Verne, Arizona State University, and the minor league affiliates of the Philadelphia Phillies, Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, and Colorado Rockies. The Matadors will compete in the opening round of the Division 4 CIF Southern Section playoffs against La Serna High School.

Sports prove to be blind to poverty across nations M ar vin Luu When one is deprived of proper food, shelter, and clothing, there is something reassuring about even the most dusty and beaten down open field or court. The hard concrete may have dirt protruding everywhere and the field may lack the proper green that so many of us take advantage of, but a few moments with a ball, perhaps just thirty minutes a day, somehow seems to make that hunger and itching all go away. When we think of sports, the first thing that often comes to mind is competition, exercise, and fun; we never realize that for others who are born into the impoverished circumstances of

other countries, sports is a way of life, a chance to step into an alternate landscape judged not by its superficial beauty but rather a meeting place that allows for an engaging activity which involves movement from everyone and everything. It serves as a sanctuary of hope, an escape from a life that many never asked for in the first place. This is the reason why the Olympics seem to have such a huge impact on our society even after 108 years of having it. . The event serves as an opportunity for individuals to represent their countries through athletic excellence rather than bringing up the problems that many countries suffer through each and every year. *This article is abridged. Vanessa De La R osa After 41 years of hard work and dedication, devoting her attention and utmost passion to every single day, French teacher Sally Arscott has finally decided to retire. Arscott has been teaching since 1973 and began in Manchester, England where she also attended university. Since then, she has taught French, Spanish, and English in four different countries, including England, France, Spain, and the United States. She was also the teacher in charge of a residential Observation and Assessment Center in London, a job which she found difficult to leave but does not regret doing so to come to the United States. “San Gabriel High School became like a second home to me,” Arscott said. “It is a very welcoming and caring place in which I could learn a lot from my students about their many cultures and needs.” The decision to retire was difficult for her to make, but was finally reinforced in the idea when she regarded technology’s rapid growth. The fact that she has been forced to use the same French book for the last 15 years is a part of her teaching style that she hopes will be left behind. “I feel it is time to move aside and let someone younger take over, especially as the world turns more and more to technology,” Arscott added. “However, my high regard for the staff and my passion for the students’ education and progress in life will continue.” Arscott remains very proud of the students for their humanity and efforts to improve themselves, and likewise for the entire staff who support them in this. Despite being torn by the idea of leaving her “second home,” she is excited at the prospect of being able to enjoy her spare time traveling and pursuing her interests. “I wish for everybody nothing but the best and to Photo by Derek Deng remind everyone to ‘keep that Matador spirit up.’”

Adventures make up your life story A nni e H uang As featured in many cliched young adult novels and chick flicks out there, summer is known for “discovering yourself” and all that jazz. Well, you don’t really have to find the love of your life in a corner coffee shop in Paris to have a meaningful summer. Sometimes, it is good to get out of your comfort zone once in a while. Instead of staying home, you can take advantage of your summer vacation by taking a trip away. Whether you’re doing studies abroad or taking a va-

cation with your family, it will be a nice transition to get away from the habitual summer lifestyle. Unfortunately, life is just plain expensive; people cannot just drain their bank accounts of a few thousands dollars just to send their kids away for the summer for “educational purposes.” Not only is it hard to convince your parents and persuade them of all the benefits of traveling, it is also hard to talk your own self into making such a commitment. What if something terrible happens? What if you absolutely hate the experience? Well, you will never find it if you cannot make it happen for yourself. Some things in life take time and commitment; so before you go off and

bring home all the travel-abroad brochures, take a moment to evaluate the reasons for your desire to take this trip. These trips are not about fun; they are opportunities for personal growth and reflections. They are also opportunities to make connections and attain beneficial knowledge. Additionally, you will learn how to open yourself to new ideas and perspectives as well as look at life in a whole new way. After all, the experience will be what you will make of it. However, before you decide that going to the beach is worth more of your time than going away for the summer, keep in mind that a thrilling personal experience is a better thing to gain before the start of a new school year than a new beach tan.

The beach, vacations, concerts, swimming, sunscreen, these are all summer, but we cannot forget about summer school either! For the average San Gabriel High School student, summer vacation is time away from school to relax and chill, to spend time with family, to travel and see what the SGV cannot offer, or simply to try something new. Whatever it is, longer days and sunshine can stop nobody from taking in the sun and making the fullest of a few months of freedom. Days when the sun is shining at its brightest are meant to be spent in the water, whether it be a fun family day at the beach or at the pool. Can you just smell the Banana Boat sunscreen that reminds you so much of the clear blue water and sand between your toes, the squeak of beach toys and floaties in your ears, as you dig out swimming gear and the grill for the perfect summer barbeque? For the vacation-travellers, you ought to fly and drive out of the 626 to see family, try new foods, immerse yourself in different cultures, or simply sightsee. Remember to take hundreds of photos, of breathtaking scenery that don’t even need an Instagram filter; remember to enjoy the time spent with family, living in the moment and making memories that will be reminisced about at future family gatherings; remember to bring back souvenirs, from typical key chains and mugs to seashells and sand off tropical beaches’, they will always be a way to look back at your time away and really make the summer, unforgettable. Most people dread hearing these words put together: summer school. As terrible as they sound, it is important to try to see the good sides of school year-round. Whether you are retaking a course, or just trying to get ahead in school, learning and keeping your brain active during the summer is healthy and enriching. Do not think of the classroom as a prison away from fun time, think of it as a place to grow and gain new experiences in. Illustration by Cassandra Chen, Graphic by Jennifer Thai
