News update World Spay Day On the 25th February, The Mayhew’s Community Vet Clinic took part in World Spay Day. We are always keen to promote the important message that, through neutering programmes, we can prevent the number of unwanted cats and dogs in the world. Every day our clinic staff carry out a number of neutering operations but we wanted to make an extra special effort to celebrate World Spay Day. Our dedicated team all took part in the day, working an extra-long shift, requiring lots of regular breaks, to achieve a total of 35 neutering procedures. This included, one Mayhew resident, six

outpatient dogs, 17 cats and an additional 11 cats who were brought in as part of our Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) programme – see page 6 to find out more.

An update The Mayhew Animal Home has made the decision that it will no longer be rehoming rabbits. Our facilities do not present the best long-term environment for rabbits and other small animals, so for their sake we feel that other

The Mayhew _ Summer 2014

rehoming centres based in more rural locations are better equipped to find suitable homes. Rabbits and small animals that are admitted to The Mayhew will still be treated if unwell, neutered and vaccinated when appropriate, and will be provided with short-term accommodation until they are well enough to move on. We will continue to provide support for all small animals that come into our care through our community, animal welfare and veterinary work. We will also continue to promote and encourage our neutering and vaccination services for rabbits as well as provide any advice on the care of small animals.

Free microchipping in June Did you know that June is National Microchipping Month? Throughout the whole month, The Mayhew will be offering free microchipping so make sure you and your pet take advantage of the service. Call our Community Vet Clinic on 020 8962 8017 to book an appointment or come along and see us at our Hyde Bark event on 15th June.

Each year thousands of cats and dogs are lost each year in the UK and many are never reunited with their owners as they have no permanent identification. Microchipping won’t hurt your pet and only takes seconds. It really is the safest way to ensure you never have to worry about losing your pet.

Event sponsorship

Sainsbury’s

The Mayhew would like to thank Daniels, a local estate agent, for supporting our work again this year. Daniels is kindly sponsoring our Spring Fair, Open Day and Christmas Fair and will be helping us promote all our events. Tony Bunce, Manager of Daniels, was keen to work with the Mayhew, “We wanted to partner with a charity where we could make a notable difference and where we could get involved as well as just being able to offer financial support. We believe helping our local community is so important and we are pleased that we are able to work with The Mayhew as a charity partner.”

On 22nd April we were honoured to open the new Sainbury’s store in Baywaster after staff members chose us as their local charity. We are very much looking forward to working with the store over the coming year for lots of fundraising opportunities. This is the second Sainsbury’s store we will be working with as we are already lucky enough to be supported by the Willesden Green branch. We are pleased to be part of such a great initiatve and are proud to have been selected.

Helping London’s feral cats In London hundreds of feral cat colonies live in hidden spots around the capital. Many of us simply go about our daily lives unaware of the growing problem. Life for a feral cat is hard. They face a life of scavenging for food and shelter and are susceptible to easily preventable diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency (FIV) and Feline Leukaemia (FeLV). Unneutered, females are able to produce two to three times a year and, without very early contact with people, their kittens, if they survive, become feral too. This population cycle is unrelenting with females able to become pregnant from as young as five months of age. The Mayhew Animal Home is working hard to manage the problem and our Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) programme is making a real impact. We caught up with our Animal Welfare Officers, Paul Grimes and Rodi Clarke, on location as they went to track down a feral colony. The call The day starts with Paul and Rodi heading off to Cricklewood, northwest London, in response to a call from a resident concerned about the feral cats living in their garden. Paul estimates there are more than 20 cats living in this colony. It usually takes about a week to trap a large colony such as this so, to ensure as many cats as possible are caught in one session, Paul has encouraged local residents to set a feeding routine for the cats to judge the best times to catch them.

6

The Mayhew _ Summer 2014

Bottom left: Paul sets up a trap. Bottom right: One of the cats ready to be neutered.

Since our TNR programme was set up in 2011, we have trapped, neutered and returned more than 1,000 feral cats, achieving 373 in 2103. We’re hoping to top this in 2014! Trap Rodi and Paul have chosen this day to return to the street and begin trapping. When they arrive in one of the gardens at 9am, they see three scruffy black cats, plus a mother and her six-month-old kitten. They look hungrily at the food pouches which Paul opens for them to smell, whilst Rodi begins setting the first manual trap. The trap is baited with food and Paul and Rodi wait around the corner. Barely five minutes later, the mother and young cat enter the trap and the door shuts. Paul and Rodi are ready to cover the trap with large towels. Paul explains: “For a feral cat to suddenly be trapped somewhere is a stressful business, so we cover them up and always act as slowly and as quietly as possible to reduce the distress of the cats.” The cats are then transferred into carriers and loaded into the van. Arriving back at The Mayhew it’s not long before Rodi and Paul are back on the road – this time to a scrapyard where they discover that one of the cat’s favourite places to hide is on the rooftop so Paul climbs up to set another trap. Neuter (and a full MOT!) Once in our veterinary clinic, our team work swiftly to ensure the well-being of the cats isn’t compromised as it’s a very unnatural environment for ferals. They all receive a full health check and are tested for FIV and FeLV. The tip of one of their ears is also clipped to indicate to us, and other organisations, that the cat has been caught and neutered. They are also treated for fleas and vaccinated. All of the cats are scanned for a microchip to make sure they are not domestic cats that have gone astray. It’s quite common for unneutered, domesticated cats to settle in feral colonies. Return Once the cats are fully recovered from their operations, usually the following day, Paul and Rodi return them to where they were caught – needless to say they leap out of the carriers with no hesitation! www.themayhew.org

Our volunteers Our team of more than 300 volunteers have a variety of different roles and are vital to the daily running of The Mayhew. In this edition, we caught up with Debbie Slatter who volunteers in our cattery. Debbie has volunteered with us for two and a half years after taking early retirement from a career dedicated to working with young children. I was specifically keen to volunteer at The Mayhew. Sixteen years ago my husband and I adopted two cats from The Mayhew. Willow and Monkey gave us so much love and happiness over the years that I felt I wanted to support an organisation that was dedicated to caring for and rehoming cats. We had always donated to The Mayhew but after retiring I wanted to give something back on a more personal level. I come into The Mayhew all day on Thursdays and on Monday afternoons. There are lots of jobs to be done. I help with the cleaning of the cabins and report anything unusual to the cattery staff such as any health or behaviour issues. I’m able to get involved with any jobs that support the wellbeing of the cats including washing feeding bowls, 8

The Mayhew _ Summer 2014

laundry and feeding time. It is hard physical work and has to be carried out in all weathers! Afternoons are dedicated to socialising with the cats. This role can vary as there may be a cat that is particularly nervous who won’t come out of their bed so we spend time with them and get them used to friendly human interaction. Other cats may be more confident so we’ll play with them in their cabin to keep them active and interested, while others like nothing more than to curl up on your lap. As a volunteer, you work as part of the team. Staff, students and volunteers all work together to ensure the cats are well cared for and receive individual attention.

There is nothing better than seeing cats leave The Mayhew. It’s nice to know they are going to their new loving home and that you played a part in making that happen.

Above: Debbie Slatter with David (who has been happily rehomed).

I find the work very rewarding. You get to know the individual characters of the cats, know that you have helped care for them and supported the hardworking staff. I moved out of London last year and wasn’t sure whether the journey would be too much but I find the experience so worthwhile that I can’t imagine not coming to The Mayhew. If I had to sum up The Mayhew in three words they would be: caring, hardworking and rewarding.

A day at The Mayhew There’s never a quiet day at The Mayhew! We are here 24-7, 365 days of the year for the cats and dogs who need our help. Here’s just a snapshot of what a day at The Mayhew entails, but no two days are the same…

There’s always lots of cleaning to be done! Our kennels and cat cabins are cleaned daily so the morning’s work is non-stop.

It’s certainly noisy at feeding time, particularly at the moment in our kitten block! We get through quite a few bags of food.

10

The Mayhew _ Summer 2014

Residents are walked a minimum of four times a day as well as having trips to the park and canal. They are always ready to greet staff. Jacky (right) enjoys his trip out with one of our volunteers.

The day runs smoothly thanks to planning – from scheduling surgery and treatment in the clinic to ensuring that all dogs are walked on time.

Our Community Vet Clinic is always busy. At any one time we have approximately 200 in-house animals that we provide veterinary cover for. In addition, our clinic offers free and low-cost neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, flea and worming treatments and dentals to pet owners in the local community. We also have to be ready to respond to welfare cases which can arrive with only a moment’s notice. www.themayhew.org

11

Animal Welfare Officers Rodi and Paul are always on call. Here they are preparing to respond to calls from concerned residents about feral cats – see page 6.

A trip to the park is enjoyed by both staff and Mayhew residents but it’s not all play. Our team are observing the dogs’ behaviour, seeing how they react to different scenarios and using the time as an important training session. It’s also a good opportunity to test recall – hence why you can see the long leads!

We always look forward to meeting potential adopters to discuss the adoption process and chat about current residents. Bruno (right) arrives back from a home visit happy in the knowledge his new family will be coming to collect him in a couple of days.

Our new sensory area allows residents to get used to lots of different sounds and smells. It’s also the perfect place for a spot of training. Troy was one of the first to try everything out and he looked pretty happy…

Resident cats and kittens get to make the most of the sunshine and stretch their legs outside in our garden.

Lovely volunteer, Karen, pops in to sew her famous catnip hearts ready to sell on our online shop and at events. They’re so popular Karen can’t sew them quick enough.

Each week we go on TheraPaws visits. Our dedicated team of volunteers, kittens and dogs visit a wide range of care homes, residential facilities and community centres.

Our fundraising team is always keen to share the achievements of The Mayhew. Our Events Officer is pictured meeting a group of local school children to thank them for their fund raising efforts. Puppy Lily was very excited to meet everyone.

At the end of a long day the work for our night staff begins – while some of us rest from a hectic day…

Events round-up L.K. Bennett evening In April, there couldn’t have been a better excuse to go shopping. We teamed up with L.K. Bennett in Clapham to hold an exclusive event in aid of The Mayhew. Shoppers enjoyed an evening browsing the store’s new summer collection whilst enjoying a glass of champagne and chatting to fellow Mayhew supporters. L.K Bennett kindly donated 10% of every purchase to The Mayhew and gave shoppers a 10% discount off purchases. The event raised £300 and was the perfect opportunity to meet with our existing supporters and make new friends. A huge thanks to everyone who came along and a special mention must be made to Gemma the dog, a regular at L.K.Bennett, who certainly was the guest of honour.

Pets in the Park Our events volunteers had a lovley day at Hackney’s first Pets in the Park. It was great to join with other animal welfare charities to be part of such a successful event. Visitors had the chance to take advantage of free microchipping and a vet check for their pets before having fun taking part in the agility and dog show. Our Mayhew stall raised a total of £150 so thank you to everyone who was there to support us.

16

The Mayhew _ Summer 2014

Spring Fair After a rather hesitant start, the rain stayed away for our annual Spring Fair – and the event turned out to be a great success. The day was filled with lots of excitement for children and grown-ups alike, including games, an Easter egg hunt, crafts, delicious food and merchandise stalls. Our fluffy Easter kittens Bunny, Hedgehog and Chick stole the show with their energetic playing in the kitten garden, while ex-Mayhew Chihuahuas Bob and Rufus provided doggie lovers with bundles of cuddles

and kisses in the quad run. Thanks to the generosity of attendees we were able to raise £2,950, not forgetting our £1,000 sponsorship from Daniels – a local estate agent. That’s a staggering total of £3,950 for the day. Don’t forget to come along to the next event being held at the Home - our Open Day on Sunday 20th July between 12noon-5pm.

Campaigns update first tv advert for the mayhew In March we were all glued to our televisions eagerly awaiting the TV debut of our first ever advert! The advert, which was created totally free of charge to The Mayhew thanks to production company Moxie Pictures and advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty, has now been seen by millions of people all around the world. The aim of the 90 second film was to encourage people to adopt an animal, focusing on the love between dog and owner. Rather than feature sad, neglected animals, the advert takes a more upbeat approach. It features three people who, after having a tough day at work, come home to the biggest welcome from their dogs – the beautiful sight of waggy tails and happy faces as they walk through the door. It reminds us that no matter what the day has thrown at us we can always rely

20

on the unconditional love of our pets. In addition to being screened during the advert break of More4’s coverage of Crufts, the advert went viral on YouTube. A staggering 1.5 million people have now watched the advert, with 5,000 shares and a massive response on Twitter. Celebrities Ricky Gervais and Stephen Fry both took to Twitter to tell their followers about the advert… so a big thank you to them both for spreading the word. Adopting an animal is one of the greatest decisions many people make in their lifetime and that’s what makes our work at The Mayhew so important. Our rehoming facilities are always full with animals desperate to share their love no matter what life has dealt them. Thanks to our supporters, like you, we really can help to give animals their second chance at happiness.

Your letters: adopted & loved So far, we’ve rehomed 49 dogs and 178 cats this year. They are busy enjoying life in their forever homes. Here’s an update from four ex-Mayhew residents…

Gizmo (now Teddy) Hi there, Just wanted to let you know that Teddy (previously Gizmo) has settled in amazingly well. We are loving sharing our home with such a sweet little fur ball. He loves his food and bolts into the kitchen at the first sound of the fridge opening or his dry food rattling in the box but he does have good manners when we eat. He sits patiently under the table waiting for us to finish, not wasting a second to regain prime position for lots of chin scratches and pats. He really likes to share the love and always rests his paws on whoever he is not sitting on, just so we can’t go anywhere without him knowing. Teddy’s beautiful long coat is now looking great as he is getting used to being brushed each day. He really is the sweetest thing, giving us plenty of smooches and head-butts to let us know he cares for/owns us! We couldn’t have hoped for a more awesome cat in our lives :-) Love (and head-butts!) from Julie, Paul and Teddy xxx

Strawberry (now Pi) Hello! Our children have renamed Strawberry so he is now Pi. He has the loveliest nature and is wonderful with our children. We are just delighted to have him. Pi is finding his feet outside - thankfully he’s not too adventurous yet so hasn’t gone too far. He has grown lots and is very affectionate. Thank you so much for letting us adopt him! Best, Lucy and family 24

The Mayhew _ Summer 2014

Cody Hi Mayhew Cody has really settled in with us. It’s only looking back that you realise how much he’s changed. He knows now that when you leave him in the garden or house on his own for a little while that we will come back so he doesn’t get worried. We still get a big welcome when we return though! He’s never happier than when we are all back home together and ideally all squished onto one sofa. He is pretty nearly always great with other dogs now, still can’t get him to calmly approach - it’s more of a headlong rush.... but he has great fun with all his chums on the common. He was particularly chuffed this week to play with two dogs with shorter legs than himself.... see piccie. We love him to bits. All the best Nikki (and Tig)

Archie Hello We had a visit from Dave for our post adoption check Archie performed well, by licking him all over! Archie has settled in so well, it’s hard to remember what it was like without him. He is very sociable and greets everyone with his extremely waggy tail. At puppy training classes he was very vocal., but learnt lots. He has had two haircuts since last August so may look a little different from when you last saw him. He’s a cheeky chappy and gets away with murder, but we wouldn’t change him for the world. We are so glad we have him. Hopefully, we will all be able to come along to your Hyde Bark event in the summer - I’m sure Archie would enjoy the occasion. Kind regards Yvette

Gift Aid explained Make your donations to The Mayhew go even further! Most of us have heard or seen the term Gift Aid but what does it actually mean? For charities, like The Mayhew, Gift Aid is incredibly important and it’s vital that our loyal supporters are aware of their part in helping us to benefit even more from their generous donations! What is Gift Aid? Gift Aid is a scheme operated by the Government which allows charities to reclaim the basic rate tax on every pound you donate. It means we can increase the value of donations we receive from UK taxpayers. How does Gift Aid work? When a UK tax payer gives a gift of money, tax has already been paid on that money. This money therefore qualifies for Gift Aid. As a charity, The Mayhew is exempt from tax, so we can claim an amount equal to the tax paid by a donor on their donation as repayment from HM Revenue & Customs. How much is Gift Aid worth? Gift Aid allows The Mayhew to claim back 25p for every £1 you give to us, boosting the value of your gift by 25%. For example, if you give £10 to us and complete the Gift Aid form, we receive your £10 plus an additional £2.50 from the Government. Donate £100 and that’s an extra £25 we can claim with no extra cost to you! How do I qualify for Gift Aid? In order for The Mayhew to reclaim the tax you have paid on your donations, you must have paid income or capital gains tax (in the UK) for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) at least equal to the tax that all the charities that you donate to will reclaim on your gifts for that tax year. Other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. What do I need to do? If you are a donor who has paid UK tax, please complete the Gift Aid form opposite and return in the free post envelope. It only takes two minutes, won’t cost you a penny but will make a huge difference to the cats and dogs at The Mayhew! Even if you think you’ve already completed the form we’d really appreciate you making the declaration so we can ensure our records are up-to-date. 26
