2011 Guidelines WHAT:
Congressman Richmond’s 2nd Congressional District Congressional Art Competition. Each school may submit to the competition up to 2 two-dimensional pieces of student art (not larger than 28” x 28” x 4” including frame). Or, a student may submit artwork, but only with the permission of his/her art teacher. Attach the Label, a TYPED Student Release Form - signed by both the student & teacher – and a one-paragraph artist statement to each artwork.
WHO:
Open exclusively to high school students currently in grades 9-12. Exceptions may be made for schools that have 7-12th graders on one campus. To be eligible to win, student must be a resident of, or attend high school in, the 2nd Congressional District (go to http://richmond.house.gov/our-district to view the district’s map).
WHY:
The Congressional Art Competition provides Congress and the public the opportunity to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talents of young Americans.
MEDIUM:
Entries must be two-dimensional, original in concept design and execution and cannot weigh more than 15 lbs. Artwork must be framed, matted and mounted for competition. The artwork categories are as follows: • • • • • • •
Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc. Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers Collage: collages must be two-dimensional Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints Mixed media: use of more than 2 mediums such as pencil, ink, etc. Computer-generated art Photography

Artwork due at McKenna Museum. Artwork received after APRIL 28th will not be considered. Arts Education Forum, Student Art Exhibition & Awards Ceremony for the 2nd Congressional District at the McKenna Museum hosted by Congressional Cedric Richmond 1st place winner’s art is sent to Washington, D.C. to be displayed for 1 year The Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at the Capitol in DC, in which the 1st place winner and parent or guardian will be invited to attend
CRITERIA:
1. Originality 2. Clearly expressed content 3. Not reproduced from a 3rd party’s work 4. Not a violation of U.S. copyright laws
