When visiting Paris, the subject of transportation is bound to come up. Paris has many different means of transportation, you can get a taxi, rent a bike, ride on the buses, or do what Parisians and tourists do alike catch the metro. With a taxi you will be spending a larger sum of money than you would by riding the metro. Renting a bike is a a great way to see the city, but if you are not familiar with the city you run the risk of getting lost, and at the bike station you cannot use a foreign debit/ credit card that is not European. Riding the bus is a good alternative to both the taxi and the renting a bike, but you have to be aware of where he bus stops are and the bus schedules. Using the metro/ RER would be recommended; you can buy a daily, weekly or monthly pass, depending on long you will be in Paris, it is a inexpensive way to travel around the city or even the

Diana DeLeon

Getting a cab in Paris can be a lot difficult then imagined. Taxi drivers do not normally speak english so that can be the number one reason of difficulty for a foreigner. If necessary to get a cab at night it would be best to separate in groups of no more than three. There have been incidents where you won’t catch a cab until your fourth attempt. Why they don’t want to pick you up and take your money, is still an unanswered question. During the day and around touristy areas it is probably

easier. Just be prepared after late night outings to get turned down a few times and knowing how to say s’il vous plaît (please) is a must. Prices of cab fairs can vary depending on your destination. Prices can range between 10 to 20 euros within the city and if trying to take a cab to the airport would cost between 60 to 80 euros, your best bet for airport transportation would be the RER B or busses.

When oringinally researching about the Catecombs, one would discover that 6 million bodies are buried underneath the surface. Take a long walk down the staircases til you’ve reached 20 meters below land level, and you’ve just walked in the creepiest, permanently haunted underground of Paris. There are so many areas of the catecombs to discover, but don’t get too close, some claim that the farther you go into the abyss of bones and skulls, the

Although there are several currency exchange businesses in Paris, the Gare du Nord would be a recommended choice. The train station is located right off of one of the most used RERs, RER B. This makes it easier to locate, and prevents anyone who is unfamiliar with the city from getting completely lost. Once in the train station, there a few information desks that can direct you to a currency

exchange station (also, almost all of the employees at the station know English). Another reason, and maybe the most important is that the service fee for the exchange is usually fair, and will not completely rob you!

Beware of the gypsies! Gypsies are mainly located around touristy areas. They like to trick you in thinking they are just asking you a question but they really are trying to con you or steal your money. There are many kinds of gypsy traps that they use. The popular ones are asking if you speak english which makes you think that they are just english speaking people who need some assistance, then they end up talking to you asking you questions to try to distract you to take your money. Gypsies don’t only want your money,

sometimes they are after your food. They come up to you and start asking you if they can have some food. The best advice when it comes to gypsies is to just not to talk to anyone you don’t need to. And be careful, they can get aggressive.

If your a book lover, Shakespeare & Company bookstore is not to be missed during your trip to Paris. The bookstore was established in 1919. In the 1920’s, great writers such as Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs and James Joyce used this bookstore as a gathering place. The original store closed during WWII, but was reopened by another owner in 1951 under the name Le Mistral. After the original owner died the current owner renamed the store it’s original name of Shakespeare & Co. One of the interesting things about the bookstore is how devoted they are to the written word; they allow young, struggling writers to

live above the store for free and work in the shop. The bookstore occupies mostly English written books, but you may find some French. This is highly recommended to visit. For information on the store and upcoming events that they maybe having visit their website www.shakespeareandcompany.com .
