IN FULL BLOOM: LET SPRING BEGIN As if spring were not a wonderful enough season, spring in Melbourne is another kind of excitement. With typical elegance, the city stretches out and begins a celebration of its own beauty and good fortune: flowers bloom, hats are displayed like impossible acts of creativity and daring; thoroughbreds race the tracks, champagne flows and jewellery sparkles. Crowds flow back into the streets and parks. The world comes to Melbourne, and Melbourne comes out, as at no other time of the year, to greet the world.

SPRING TO ME

Spring to me means Spring Racing, says Trish Johnston of Flowers Vasette: Melbourne’s floral destination.

s the weather warms and the leaves burst on the city’s trees, it’s time for party season to really kick off.

“A hat is always a must-do for racing, but why not take that idea further with a stunning floral headpiece,” she suggests.

Vasette prepares months in advance for the Spring Racing Carnival, meeting with clients to design and collaborate on ideas for the floral creations that become a central part of the overall theme of each individual marquee.

Bright floral headpieces in juicy shades of lemon, lime, watermelon and cherry serve as a fun feature piece.

“No longer is a bowl of flowers going to cut it,” says Trish.

Another talking point of the Spring Racing season is the fashion. The women of Melbourne have always embraced this, however this year Trish would like to see flowers not just in the marquees but adorning the women as well.

The Spring Racing Carnival really heralds the start of Melbourne’s major event season. It is a welcome buzz from the quieter winter months. This is sure to keep the team at Vasette rolling like the spinning sunflower atop the beautiful Brunswick street store.

Flowers always bring the marquees to life and provide such a talking point. From the Birdcage to the Winning Post, Vasette spreads the ‘spring cheer’ with green walls, hanging floral chandeliers, fabulous installations and more.

Pretty, peachy and feminine floral prints can be beautifully paired with stunning peony based necklaces or bracelets in complimentary shades. The beauty with floral accessories is that they can be customised to any style of fashion, whether it avant-garde or a more demure look. Male racegoers have long embraced the tradition of floral accessories, with different floral button holes for each day. Yellow rose on Cup Day, blue corn flower for Derby Day etc. There is the opportunity for women to indulge in the luxury of this tradition by incorporating the appropriate flowers into custom-made pieces, or they can simply create their own masterpiece with a different floral aspect for each day.

the always the winner on the day. This involves trips out to the track to refresh and deliver flesh flowers. For her part, Trish Johnston’s role is to make sure everything runs smoothly and looks gorgeous – there are numerous marquees to tend to.

YER, Australia’s largest department store group, and the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), Australia’s premier racing club, have announced a new five-year sponsorship agreement that will extend the ongoing partnership between the two organisations to 35 years.

VRC Chief Executive Officer David Courtney welcomed the new agreement and credited the partnership for the incredible success of Myer Fashions on the Field. “Such an enduring partnership is extremely rare and is a testament to the fitting pairing of Myer and the Melbourne Cup Carnival. This is a partnership based on a genuine association and we look forward to continued successes in the years to come,” said Courtney.

Now with a total prize pool of over $400,000, Myer Fashions on the Field last year celebrated its 50 year anniversary, and continues to grow in stature.

Myer Chief Executive Officer Bernie Brookes was pleased to announce the new agreement and praised the ongoing strong partnership between the brands. “Myer is delighted to extend our well-established partnership with the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the Victoria Racing Club in a way that will benefit our Myer customers nationally,” Brookes said.

“Our marquee showcases our leading designers and fashion and also enables us to reward our high performing team members and valued MYER one customers with a fantastic day at the Carnival,” he added.

The agreement extends the already successful exclusive partnership and increases Myer’s commitment to the Myer Fashions on the Field National Competition. Myer has also secured exclusive naming rights to Flemington’s vastly popular Spring Fashion Lunch in September and the Beautiful Girls Fashion Lunch in March.

As the VRC’s exclusive fashion partner, Myer will continue to have naming rights sponsorship of Myer Fashions on the Field – every bit an institution of the Melbourne Cup Carnival – and all associated events nationally. In addition, Myer will continue to host a marquee in the coveted front row of the exclusive and world-renowned Birdcage Enclosure throughout the four days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“Myer is synonymous with fashion and has a long-standing commitment to supporting fashion and racing both in Victoria and right across Australia. This is demonstrated through our ongoing partnerships with the VRC and many other metro and regional racing clubs around the country.

aulfield Guineas Day (this year Saturday, October 12) will be overrun by the rosy hue as David Jones donates its race, the Toorak Handicap, to its longstanding partner of 19 years, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The David Jones mounting yard grass will stand out in pink along with the track side signage and winning posts. NBCF CEO Carole Renouf will present the winning trophy of the David Jones NBCF Toorak Handicap, and all guests are encouraged to wear a touch of pink on this special day. Shop Pink day is coming up at David Jones, when race wear attire can continue the efforts towards the fight against breast cancer. David Jones recently announced that its fifth annual Shop Pink Donation Day will be held on Thursday, October 3. This is David Jones’ most significant fundraising initiative for the year where the entire profits earned from all 39 stores nationally are donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

David Jones has a longstanding commitment to provide focused support to causes that directly benefit the health and wellbeing of Australian women, and in particular breast cancer. David Jones has been associated with the NBCF since its inception in 1994 and in 2004 became a Diamond Partner.

When David Jones’ relationship with NBCF was established in 1994, 30 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer lost their battle with the disease. In less than 20 years, this figure has halved. NBCF believes this achievement is primarily due to research – the most effective way to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. David Jones is proud to be a part of the continued and concerted research effort which has delivered advances in understanding risk, early detection, treatment and care.
