FIM ENDURO WORLD CUP DEBUTS IN SHEFFIELD Promoters Future West are hugely excited to announce they have been awarded the exclusive rights to stage Round 1 of The FIM Indoor Enduro World Cup in the United Kingdom on Saturday October 31st 2009.

Sheffield Arena has been chosen

by Future West as the host venue for the very unique FIM Indoor Enduro World Cup. This event will feature the best Endurocross riders from around the globe.

Indoor Enduro is one of the most extreme forms of off-road motorcycle sport, talked about by those who know as the ‘toughest racing on two wheels’.

Imagine a combination of trials, motocross and enduro with riders competing against each other on a specially created indoor course featuring rock and log sections, water, giant tyres and more, all designed to challenge the toughest of the tough! And all in a Supercross style setting. Scary? …………. You bet your life it is!

Five times indoor and seven times outdoor World Trials Champion Dougie Lampkin MBE, five times British Trials Champion Graham Jarvis and enduro ace David Knight head a strong field of British challengers.

Number One and current World Champion Spain’s Ivan Cervantes will be defending hard, Polish wildman and recent Las Vegas AMA Endurocross winner Taddy Blazusiak, is another who

wants that number one plate, as does French ace Antoine Meo. Sheffield Supercross regulars will revel once more at the site of American star Mike Brown. This year the championship series is really showing its multi-discipline roots, drawing world class riders from enduro, trials and motocross, it all kicks off at Sheffield with further rounds in Spain before the provisional final round in Mexico.

David Knight along with the Dirt Wurx crew will be designing and building an amazing and ultimately challenging track befitting the line up of current, former and no doubt future world champions that will be competing. Thousands of tonnes of rock, soil, logs, huge tyres and a water feature will be brought into Sheffield Arena completely transforming the South Yorkshire venue into a glitzy indoor spectator friendly spectacular.

TEAM RILEY PARTY LIKE IT’S 1969!

Super slimmers from South Sheffield are still celebrating after taking part in the world’s biggest birthday party for Slimming World’s 40th Birthday.

The slimming club’s 300,000 members from across Britain were invited to bring their friends and family to birthday party events at Slimming World groups between Monday, September 28, 2009 and Saturday, October 3, 2009, in what’s hoped will set a Guinness World Record as the world’s biggest ever birthday bash.

All the consultants on Lynne Riley’s team hosted their group parties with a 1969-themed celebration.

To celebrate some members donned fancy dress from the 60s or they came dressed in something Ruby

Red, they enjoyed music from that era, and tucked into healthy versions of their favourite party foods including Birthday cakes.

The birthday party was in celebration of Slimming World’s Ruby Anniversary.

The slimming club was launched by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE in September 1969 when she was just 21. Margaret started out with just four groups in Derbyshire, where the company is still based. It now holds 6,000 groups every week and boasts a membership of 300,000 men, women and adolescents making it the UK’s leading weight-loss organisation.

Slimming World Consultant Sally who runs the Beighton group said “The birthday parties were a huge success; it was great

fun for all of our members and the perfect opportunity for people who are new to Slimming World to come along and see what it’s all about. Everyone saw what a great time we have each week and sampled delicious dishes from our new Extra Easy eating plan which was launched to celebrate the 40th anniversary – I don’t think they could believe that they could eat such tasty food and lose weight, but it’s true and my members’ weight losses are proof of that”.

ENTERING SINGING COMPETITIONS HINTS & TIPS

Preparing for a singing competition? And need some help?

Here are some useful tips to ensure you show off your capabilities in your next competition.

1. Before you even start preparing for your audition you need to research the company you are auditioning for, so you can understand exactly what they are looking for. Is the competition looking for the next big singing star?

If so what age? What genre?

An all round entertainer? Or a sob story?

Spent some time on the internet finding out as much as you can. It’s also good idea to research the organisers of the competition too, so you can find out if the competition is credible, as unfortunately there are more and more competitions emerging that offer very little to the winners, other than the organisers making a lot of money.

What to look for when researching: • The organisers credentials • Information on the judges – who are they?

• What do you win?

• What does it cost to apply?

• How do you apply? Is it an online competition or live audition?

• How many categories are there?

• What happened to the winners of previous competitions?

• Do you perform acapella, to backing track or do you bring a musician?

• What will you get out of entering? Experience, the chance to win? Exposure?

2. So now you have researched the competition and

have decided you are happy to enter, what next?

You need to chose your song, and style of performance.

• Up-tempo • Ballad • Original song What aspect of your voice do you want to show off?

The majority of singers are going to chose ballads, as it’s the most obvious way of showing off your capabilities.

But beware, a lot of singers will also chose to sing a ballad, so you need to look at something that you can do very well, or something you arrange slightly differently.

What’s the point of learning a song and then performing it just like the original artist?

The judges have seen if all before, and really don’t want to just see another ‘imitation’ singer. So what if you can sing like Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Rhianna, Justin Timberlake, you may as well become a tribute act (which can offer you a worthy career though). Wouldn’t you rather develop your musical

‘identity’? So look for a song that shows off your strong points, and adapt it for you.

Play around with it. Adjust the key, have it arranged differently. Make it your own.

Don’t be afraid to sing an up tempo song. Up tempo songs are a welcome break for judges, after listening to several versions of ‘Hero’, ‘My Heart will go on’, ‘I will always love you’, ‘When you say nothing at all’ & ‘You raise me up’, they will be glad of the change. Why not look for a song that is really fun, to show you can entertain and allow and audience to have fun. Maybe a classic from the sixties, or something in the charts at the moment. Again, don’t sing it just like the original. Make it your own.

CLUBLAND AWARDS BUSIER THAN EVER - VOTE NOW!!!

Over the last few years I’ve watched The Mercury Clubland Awards with a great deal of interest and this year is shaping up to be the most competitive ever.

Votes have been coming in thick and fast and contrary to some thoughts the votes are counted fairly and independently audited. It is true to say that some acts are receiving good support and it would be naive of use to believe that they

have been getting their supporters to vote for them.

The prestige of being a Mercury Clubland Award winner is considerable and it is really the only indication clubs and audiences have of who are the most popular acts over a 12 month period.

I suppose they are our equivalent of ‘The Brit Awards’.

I’m a member of the voting academy for the ‘Brits’ and the major difference is that ‘Brit’ award winners gain the acclaim of the industry

while our awards are solely based on audience support.

The formula is simple. If you want your favourite act to win then make sure you vote and vote now as voting will close 10 days before the awards event at Wadsley Bridge WMC on Thursday November 19th. Also you will need to make sure you get your tickets as this is always a very busy show.

Over the last few weeks the ‘Talkback’ page has really raised some interest from our readers.

While we publish news and views on here it is first and foremost your opportunity to air your views and make comment.

If we receive letters that are fit for publication we will publish them even if they might not receive the agreement of everyone. That’s the role of a newspaper, to create debate and interest. This week we have published an apology to Smithywood WMC and rightly so. We do have to make certain points

however. Firstly, anything we print is not necessarily the view of the Editor or the newspaper and we have to make a judgement call as to whether or not it should be published. We may not like, or agree, with a letter or submitted editorial but we can’t censor as this would neither be fair nor proper. If we publish we will always give a right of reply and if we get it wrong we will apologise.

This week, for the first time, I have requested a change in editorial content and this week we have printed an apology. Having read the piece again and again, and

having spoken with Brian Davy and his wife, I have to say that I was delighted that they cared enough to come and see me and support the club that they have served so magnificently over the years. It really was a pleasure speaking with them. I am also totally supportive of their view and the polite and professional way they expressed it. I have invited Brian to contribute an editorial as he so obviously cares deeply about Sheffield clubs in general as well as his own.

During our travels last week I spoke to a couple of committee members from a few local clubs and we spoke about what could be done to help clubs and one of the main things was marketing and advertising.

Each and every individual club, and for me this is one of the ways forward, in the editors note last week it was written how clean and well decorated clubs who pay for top artistes are doing so well (a thing I have said for many a week now) but it is also about advertising who your club has got appearing there or what activities are going on.

We live in Barnsley so for me I get The Mercury every week from Lane Top club to see who is on in Sheffield and Rotherham but not all clubs are advertising and vice versa Sheffield people can’t see who is on in Barnsley or Doncaster. Now the guys who I spoke to mentioned the internet but has everyone got it and does everyone advertise on it. The answer is no .

Word of mouth is a good thing but I believe you can’t beat a paper. I for one find it easier to pick up look through

and pick were I’m going .

One idea I would like to put to the editor of The Mercury is for you to do a feature possibly with a few photos of the clubs that do advertise and to get a bit of background as to what clubs are doing to help them going forward.

Also showcases for artistes if any agencies are doing any of these why not advertise the fact so that club concert secretaries can come along and view what artistes are on offer and so clubs can get out and see these artistes under one roof and maybe get bookings. I know in the past I have been to a lot of these and I must admit that some of the acts are very good but never seen a lot around these parts as they are booked to travel to other parts of the country so come on ladies and gents let’s get to these if there are any and see who is suitable for your clubs and any agents out there please let these clubs know as soon as because at the end of the day these clubs are your customers.

Well, not travelled a lot this week due to being in hospital Friday but I must admit the two clubs I went to it was like New Years eve in both.

On Thursday we went to my favourite Thursday night club, Wickersley. On walking in at 7.45 the doorman said “you will be stood up tonight”. How right he was it was heaving. Alexanders Palace was on for the second time in two months and Ken the concert secretary was worried not many would be in. How wrong he was, the people were queuing to the door to get drinks and even neighbours complained they couldn’t get in their drives for the amount of cars in the area. For me this is what clubland is about .

On Saturday it was the same at Ashfield Club in Barnsley when we went to see Whizz Kid. What a good night this was and I must say these guys look as though they are really enjoying themselves on stage, which also gives the audience a buzz. Both these bands are a credit to their respected agencies and are a must for any club.

THE RIGHT TO PUBLISH AND THE RIGHT OF REPLY

A TRIBUTE TO DAVE KILNER Dave Kilner , the man most qualified to be described as ‘a nice guy’ sadly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning in hospital, aged forty eight, after many weeks of illness.

Having started work as a seventeen year old at Radio Hallam, seeing the position in the job centre, this ultra charismatic man went from strength to strength to become the premier disc jockey and radio presenter in the area.

He was ever charming, delightful company, very charismatic, and rose to the top of his profession without the ruthless streak evidenced in so many successful men.

Dave’s key to success was his tremendous popularity, always willing to put himself out for other people, and knowing him throughout his career, I have never heard him speak ill of anybody, nor have I ever heard a word said against him.

His close friend, and fellow disc jockey and presenter, Gary Sinclair, spoke highly of Dave, highlighting his great talent with a microphone in his hand, and his untiring efforts for’ Help a Hallam Child’, the fruits of which will be borne for years to come.

I visited Dave in hospital with Gary recently, and was saddened to see him looking

so ill, yet he still had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, so typical of him.

His career has been well documented in other publications, as has his links with Sheffield United, where he was the voice of the Blades for many years.

We have lost a great man, a star who looked like a star, and his contribution to local radio and charity fundraising should never be underestimated. I, on behalf of us all at the Mercury, tender our sincere condolences to his wife Shirley and daughters Rebecca and Nicola.

Thirdly there were no children present when the comedian was on stage and there were no complaints received on the night or since by any of the persons present.

Technology, marvellous stuff - where would we be without it? That is of course until it all starts to go wrong!

Now the more discerning of radio hams might have noticed that our 1350mw transmitter had been limping along for the last few months. You and me, probably couldn’t tell anything was wrong, but the engineer says it was, so repairs were required. Our regular engineer lives about 60 miles away and is a little busy, to say the least. You see people who know about medium wave transmitters are getting as rare as the parts to keep them going and so those who do are much in demand. But we managed half a day of his precious time this week to solder, poke and twiddle – well I don’t know the technical terms and that’s all it looks like to me! Thankfully he’s not like a car mechanic though, there’s no scratching of chins, sharp intakes of breath or astronomical bills at the end. The biggest problem with the maintenance of our transmitter is where it is – in the loft. I mean, of course, where else would you put it.

It’s a tight squeeze and there’s much running up and down from transmitter to the outside aerial and back again – who needs a gym! Good news though, he fixed one of the transmitters. Not so good news we couldn’t get a part to fix the back-up transmitter but not to worry back to the magic of technology and the internet and all being well he should be back in a couple of weeks to fit the required piece.

So having fixed one bit of kit, something else is bound to go wrong - the Steelers commentary gear. We were down to solo commentary for most of the game – well done Scott for keeping it going. The guys are bringing the gear in for investigations as the over the phone technical support couldn’t crack it but all being well we should be back to full strength for next Saturday. Oh and yes, the Steelers lost 2-1 to Cardiff Devils.

Now we’ve had some changes to get used to in the last couple of weeks at Radio Nightingale, you know when you’ve said something a particular way for so long it’s hard work to remember a new phrase. Having just managed to get over Rotherham United not playing a Millmoor (how many years?!) we now have to contend with a change in our frequencies. Radio Nightingale, 945 & 1350mw and Patientline Channel 6 has become 945 & 1350mw and Hospedia.

A take-over and rebranding for the company which operates the bedside entertainment units in the Rotherham General means we all need to practice our new frequencies. I bet there’ll still be an odd Patientline slipping out the other side of Christmas!
