MERCURY AWARDS HOTTING UP TO A CLIMAX It was February 1976 and I received a call from a good friend of mine asking me whether I would like to join a band called John O’Hara and the Playboys. I didn’t need to think about it twice and I was on my way into clubland and what’s more I was starting at the top. O’Hara’s Playboys was a ‘name’ band and we played all of the top clubs alongside such bands as New Jersey Turnpike, Jasper, Bitter Suite etc. In those days The Mercury hadn’t even been thought of and the clubland awards were actually organised by the Star and Telegraph via a publication organised by some of the staff called ‘Our Clubs’ or ‘OC’ for those with long memories. Clubland was in it’s accendancy and there was live entertainment almost every night. Over the years there have been many famous winners including Charlie Williams, Paul Shane, Jimmy Carol, of course, Turnstyle, The Discoes, Star Star, Stephanie King, Glen Dale, Ted Beyer, Soul Story, Acoustic Angels and many many more clubland favourites. Jumping forward 33 years to 2009 and we know that there have been many changes but

what hasn’t changed is the prestige of being a clubland award winner. When the ‘OC’ stopped being published The Mercury took up the promotion and hosting of the awards and today’s awards carry, probably, as much prestige, if not more, due to the fact that the competition is harder due to the fact that there are more acts and nominations come from further afield. This year has seen the introduction of internet voting and you can vote direct online by logging on to www. mercurynewspaper.co.uk. Dial House, sadly missed, and Crookes have provided wonderful facilities over the years for the awards show and this year, for the first time, the show will be hosted by Wadsley Bridge WMC on November 19th. I can’t remember a year when there has been more interest and votes are coming in thick and fast with one or two of the newer clubland artists receiving votes. Hot off the press I can reveal the names of some of this years front runners. Here’s the list in no particular order and in no particular category: Star Star, Gary Phillips, Sunny Daye, Jimmy Carol, Mark

Lawrence, Andrew Kennedy, Clair Roberts, Dream On, Dance Nation, Soul Story, Nick Page, Tristan Drew, Gutter Band, Ellie James, Kerry Nichols, Manhattans, Sarah Lee Scott, One Way, Alan Turner, BJ White, CJ Harper, Debbie Dee, Laughing Legends, Kerfuffle, Stuart Eden, Abby Leigh Rowan, Rob Linacre, Evoke, Carl Taylor, Mens Club, Anita Madigan. Unfortunately there appears to have been some ‘tactical’ voting and every vote will be scrutinised and examined to make sure that it is fair and genuine. If there has been any attempt to achieve a ‘manipulated’ result the act in question will be eliminated from the voting. THERE IS ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT TO VOTE AND ONLY A MONTH TO THE ACTUAL AWARDS CEREMONY. MAKE SURE YOU VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE AND ORDER YOUR TICKETS. The Voting form can be found on Page 4 but you can also vote online at www. mercurynewspaper.co.uk

SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIREFIGHTERS STRIKE ACTION

The Truth Behind The Myths South Yorkshire Fire Authority has said it will sack 744 Firefighters to force through new contracts of employment.

South Yorkshire Fire Authority took the decision to introduce 12 hour shifts before beginning any negotiations with the Fire Brigades Union who represent 98% of South Yorkshire firefighters. Fact: They are only prepared to hold negotiations with pre-conditions, which is the introduction of 12 hour shifts as an outcome. Fact: The Fire Brigades Union has offered a compromise of 10/14 hours, which was dismissed out of hand at a stage-managed meeting of the Fire Authority webcast to the public. Fact: 12 hour shifts will not increase productivity above that offered by the Fire Brigades Union. Fire Service Senior Managers state the prime time to visit people’s homes is between 4:30pm and 7pm to carry out home fire safety checks and therefore want shift times between 8am and 8pm. Firefighters current shift system enables them to carry out home fire safety checks between 2pm and 5pm on day shifts and between 6:30pm and 8:30pm on night shifts. If the 12 hour shift system was introduced no home fire safety checks will be carried out after 7pm. Fact: The peak time for fire emergencies is between 4pm and 7pm which could interrupt or even prevent any home fire safety checks during these times; therefore the Chief Fire Officers statement that the intention is to improve public safety is obviously flawed. Fact: Firefighting is an extremely strenuous and physically exhausting job. With more fires occurring through the day it is logical that the day shift needs to be shorter to avoid firefighters being injured due to unnecessary fatigue caused by longer day shifts. Fact: The Fire Brigades Union firmly believe that the real intention behind 12 hour shifts is to reduce the number of Fire Engines available at night. This is the only logical reason for the managements’ apparent determination to move to equal length shifts as this makes it much easier to take firefighters off night shifts and put them onto day shifts. The Audit Commission report ‘Rising to the Challenge’ encourages taking pumps off the run at night at 2 pump stations. The Fire Authority and Chief Fire officer continue to state “AT THIS TIME there are no plans to reduce fire cover”. Fact: South Yorkshire firefighters are not militant people, they want to be able to carry out their duties and protect the public to the best of their ability. South Yorkshire Fire Authority has demonstrated total contempt for the opinions of their employees by threatening to sack firefighters to push through imposed changes to their contracts of employment. Firefighters are so angry at this disgraceful decision that they have voted by more that 5 to 1 for strike action. Fact: NO firefighter wants this dispute or wants to take strike action.

Fact: THIS STRIKE ACTION CAN BE AVOIDED!! FIREFIGHTERS WILL CALL OFF STRIKE ACTION IF SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIRE AUTHORITY REMOVES THE THREAT TO SACK 744 FIREFIGHTERS AND RETURN TO PROPER NEGOTIATIONS WITHOUT SETTING PRE-CONDITIONS.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees

Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made standard ‘Mirror

Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the local authority get it all?”

Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future Care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a childs divorce, re-marrage or financial difficulties.

An Open Mind

HEALING

A weekly column written by International Medium, Author & Visionary Joanne Gregory

A WEEKLY COLUMN WRITTEN BY INTERNATIONAL MEDIUM, AUTHOR & VISIONARY JOANNE GREGORY

MANIFESTING MONEY At this time of year I can begin to see the pressure building as we approach Christmas. I don’t know what it is about this holiday that makes us all go mad. The extra work we give ourselves at this time of year is astronomical; I remember my mother in law ritually changing the curtains right through the house in November every year. Every where there is evidence that people are finishing off DIY projects or even starting them in time for Christmas, is Santa that fussy that he wont deliver gifts if the lounge hasn’t had a coat of paint? The financial pressure we put ourselves under has to be the biggest stress. I remember when I was little; Christmas consisted of one big present and a handful of stocking fillers. It’s more than an apple and an orange I know, but much less than we give to our kids today, yet it was always magical. Then there’s the food, I admit to baking like a woman possessed in the run up to Christmas, but why do we stock up till our fridge is heaving and cupboards overflowing, who are we expecting to call and do we really want to be eating fruit cake in July? Nevertheless, for at least two months we will be happy to have tinsel for brains and tennis elbow from the shopping bags because there’s something joyous about it all. How then, do we make it all joy and no worry, I don’t mean worry like searching for slippers for Auntie Dot that won’t squash her bunions, but worry of finding the money or paying for it all in January when the bills arrive on the mat. The biggest mistake we make, I believe, is that we have to know how? The universe will provide us with whatever we ask for, believe possible and, more importantly, feel possible. How is not something we even need to contemplate! The universe can hold planets together, make night follow day, germinate seeds into plants and babies from a bunch of chromosomes, so it can take care of your monetary requirements no problem! Let the universe do its job and you do yours, by turning your attention to what you really want and

away from what you don’t want! Concentrate on the great Christmas and steer away from the debt, mentally. Visualise the Christmas you want AND your bills being paid. Imagine your bank statement with a nice hefty balance at the bottom and ‘feel’ cash in your hands. When you hear yourself saying it’s too expensive or I don’t know how I’m going to do it why not use one of the affirmations below instead. Remember you have the power to influence how atoms behave by your belief systems. Atoms are the building blocks of the entire universe, so what you believe will become true for you. Rich people who lose their money will regain it again nine times out of ten, because they believe money is part of their life and is readily accessible. With time you too can change your belief system, beliefs stem from repeated actions and stimulus. If you’re told enough you will believe it, if you’re shown enough you will believe it. Tell yourself you have all the money you need and before you know it you will have it and believe it too. Affirmations • I have all the money I need and more! • Money comes to me daily • My bills are all paid on time • I am debt free • I have (suitable figure) pounds in my bank account • I am paid generously for my work • I have enough money to buy anything I want • I share my wealth daily • My joyful happy Christmas is all paid for and I still have money in the bank. JUST REMEMBER IT TAKES ONLY 16 SECONDS OF DIRECTED ENERGY FOR SOMETHING TO BEGIN TO MANIFEST, GOOD OR BAD! THE MORE ENERGY YOU GIVE TO SOMETHING OVER AND ABOVE THAT THE BIGGER IT WILL BECOME WHATEVER IT IS!

FOOTBALL - MILLERS NEWS

LOCAL SPORT NEWS

TEN MAN MILLERS HANG ON Ten man Rotherham United claimed a second successive home draw against Notts County today, thanks to some tremendous goalkeeping by Andy Warrington. The Millers stopper was called into action on numerous occasions but kept out the League’s money men, with a string of saves right from the top drawer. Ronnie Moore made two changes to the side that drew with Hereford last week, with Tom Pope and Jamie Green being replaced by Drewe Broughton and Andy Nicholas, both making their first starts of the season. Broughton almost had an immediate impact, heading wide a Dale Tonge cross at the far post in the first minute. Johnnie Jackson fired over for the visitors and Nick Fenton also saw a header wide in the opening exchanges, but the first real chance fell to Notts County. Tonge was caught in possession by Lee Hughes, and despite winning the ball back, gave it away to Matt Ritchie, who broke into the box, but his shot from the left was saved by Warrington. Ritchie turned provider for County’s next chance, crossing from the left to Neal Bishop, but his shot was wide of Warrington’s left hand post. The Millers were temporarily down to ten men for a spell in the first half when Nicholas had to receive treatment for a blow to the head. He returned to the action, but was eventually withdrawn with Green taking his place. TheMillers fanswere soon whipped up into a frenzy when Hughes went down under Fenton’s challenge. The former West Bromwich Albion man appeared to raise a smile to the home supporters who clearly felt his theatrics were uncalled for. The visitors came closest to opening the scoring just after the half hour mark, Ben Davies’ cross was met by Mike Edwards who headed against the crossbar, before Ian Sharps cleared the danger. Two minutes later, and the Millers had their best chance of the game, an-

other header, Adam Le Fondre this time, with a looping effort that was tipped over by Kasper Schmeichel. Ronnie Moore’s half-time team talk appeared to spark a reaction from the Millers and Kevin Ellison was unlucky to see his shot tipped wide by the scrambling Schmeichel. The Millers were soon dealt a blow when Fenton brought down Davies on the edge of the box, the referee deeming it worthy of a second booking, and the defender received his marching orders against his former club. Pablo Mills moved into the centre back position to cover Fenton, and the Millers went on the attack. Nicky Law crossing from the left twice, but on both occasions Broughton was unable to benefit, being denied first by Graeme Lee, and then Schmeichel smothering on the second occasion. Rotherham’s one man deficit soon became apparent as Notts County looked to make the extra man count. Luke Rodgers had an effort from the right saved by Warrington after Le Fondre had been caught in possession and the Millers ‘keeper was called on again soon after, saving from a Davies free-kick this time. On 81 minutes the visitors should have been in front but for some excellent defending by Mills. Rodgers again on the right saw his effort saved by the legs of Warrington, and his rebound was deflected wide by Mills’ last gasp lunge. The visitors continued to come forward, with Rodgers at the centre of it all, debutant Ade Akinbiyi put him through on goal and after beating Warrington, Green cleared over his own crossbar. Rodgers did eventually find the back of the net in stoppage time, but the referee’s assistant had his flag raised for offside. The referee drew the game to a close and the Millers will be looking to build on their three game unbeaten run as they travel across the Pennines to Bury next Saturday.

IT’S A POINT GAINED, SAYS RONNIE

Ronnie Moore was unhappy with the Millers first half showing but praised his teams work rate in the second half after 10-man Rotherham ground out a point against Notts County. The Millers manager bemoaned his sides’ first half performance but following Fenton’s dismissal praised their resilience to still come away with a point: “It is a point gained,” he added. “They way we battled in then second half will kid people that we were good in the first half. Our first half performance was totally inept, every time we won possession we just gave it away. I thought that we were very fortunate to come in at half time level. We changed things around at half time but we couldn’t get that shape going because Fenton was sent off. I found that in the second half we had 10 players out there who had big hearts so that is a good sign I am happy that we got a point because Notts County are not going to be too far away, there is no doubt about that.” Moore made changes to his starting 11 with Andy Nicholas, who was forced off in the first 45 with a head injury, and Drewe Broughton coming in for Jamie Green and Tom Pope. “I just felt that their two centre halves were there to be beat up and that is why Drewe played but unfortunately for us we couldn’t get him on the ball,” Moore explained. “I thought that Nicholas has come in and done well, he hasn’t done anything wrong, it is just unfortunate that he got a cut to his head. Nicholas will get a run in the side; he hasn’t done anything wrong today.”

ICE HOCKEY - STEELERS NEWS Words & Pics by Sarah Youle

ISSUE 820

HUBBAUER SHINES AS LIGHTS GO OUT Last weekend saw two wins for the Steelers in a great start to their 2009-10 Challenge Cup campaign as they beat the Newcastle Vipers in back-to-back games. Saturday saw the Steelers make the trip to Whitley Bay, where they beat the Vipers 6-4, before the second meeting of the weekend at Ice Sheffield, which saw the home side win 5-2 despite blown fuses plunging the rink into darkness not once but twice. Saturday’s game saw new players Matt Hubbauer and Stephen Wood make their debuts in the Steelers’ first Challenge Cup game this season. It was the Vipers who scored first, with Matt Hubbauer tying the scores at 28:31 during a five-on-three powerplay. Within the following six minutes the Vipers took the lead once again, and Steelers leveled this time with a goal from Doug Sheppard. David Longstaff closed the scoring for the second period with a goal for the Vipers at 39:14. The third period saw the Steelers take the lead with goals from Jason Hewitt and captain Jonathan Phillips, before the Vipers made it 4-4 with a goal from Jason Tejchma. Joey Talbot scored the game-winning goal for the Steelers at 55:56, and Jeff Legue sealed the victory at 59:44. On Sunday at Ice Sheffield it was Matt Hubbauer once again who opened the scoring for the Steelers in the first period, but two goals from Jerammie Domish put the Vipers ahead. In the 30th minute Joey Talbot equalized for

the Steelers, his goal coming just seconds before the power failed at Ice Sheffield, causing a short delay whilst the fault was fixed and the lights warmed up again. The score remained tied at 2-2 into the third period, the start of which was delayed after another lighting failure. It was Hubbauer’s spectacular second goal of the evening at 50:23, which saw the newest Steeler take the puck from the Steelers’ goal crease through center ice and straight to the Vipers’ net, which put the home team ahead. Two goals within two minutes from Brad Cruik-

shank and Rod Sarich left the Vipers with no come-back.

For the Sheffield Steelers’ home games at the Sheffield Arena during October kids go free when accompanied by a full-paying adult. The Steelers are at home this weekend against the Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday 24th October. Tickets are available from the Arena Box Office (0114 256 56 56). VIEW OWLS BACK TO LAWS DELIGHTED AFROM THE WINNING WAYS WITH RESPONSE TERRACE Sheffield Wednesday returned to winning ways at Hillsborough with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Coventry. First half goals from Darren Purse - his first for the Owls since signing over the summer - and Leon Clarke sealed the points as Wednesday turned in a dominant display to move back towards the top half of the Championship table. It was all-change for SWFC as illness and injury forced Brian Laws to shuffle his pack. Virus victim Richard Wood stood down so Mark Beevers came into the heart of the rearguard alongside skipper Purse. Jermaine Johnson returned on the left flank in place of Etienne Esajas - also on the sick bed - while loanee striker Luke Varney came back into the starting line-up having missed out against parent club Derby last time out. Marcus Tudgay was still feeling the effects of a recent neck injury, leaving Clarke to partner Varney up front. The Owls might have made the breakthrough even before Purse headed the hosts into a fourth-minute lead. Johnson broke free down the channel and sent in a low cross that just evaded the onrushing figure of Clarke. But Wednesday kept up the early pressure and were rewarded when Purse climbed high from Darren Potter’s well-placed corner to nod past the committed Kieren Westwood. Coventry came back into the contest without troubling Lee Grant and it was the Owls that struck next on 19 minutes to double their advantage. James O’Connor was felled in the box by Elliott Ward after a jinking run and up stepped Clarke to blast emphatically into the back of the Kop net. City had to wait until the half-hour mark before truly threatening and Patrick Van Aanholt should have done better when the ball fell kindly at his feet 12 yards out but the loanee from Chelsea could only scoop high over the crossbar. The game continued with Wednesday in the driving seat. Laws’ side had certainly found their rhythm, playing the kind of free-flowing football that City struggled to contain. And the Owls finished the first half with their two-goal cushion intact as controversy reigned on the 45-minute mark. A deep Coventry corner found its way to ex-Owls loanee Leon Best, whose header appeared to cross the line but referee Colin Webster waved play-on to the frustration of the travelling fans from the Midlands. The Sky Blues came out for the second period with more purpose but still failed to profit from their bursts of enterprise. To compound matters, they lost midfielder Aaron Gunnarsson ten minutes in following a tackle from Clarke, for which the Wednesday striker was booked. City did manage to force Grant into action, though; the keeper saving comfortably from Ward’s speculative overhead kick. More controversy reigned on 64 minutes when City thought they had earned a penalty when Best tumbled under a challenge from Tommy Spurr. The referee blew up and a spot-kick seemed the only conclusion but after consulting with his assistant, Mr Webster gave the ball to the Owls.

Wednesday headed straight down the other end and nearly made it three as Clarke found space in the penalty area to curl a shot that beat Westwood but also the upright. City responded with Isaac Osbourne drilling a shot that was beaten out by Grant and the visitors entered the latter stages enjoying more of the possession. But the Wednesday goal rarely looked in danger and the Owls comfortably kept Coventry at bay to head into Tuesday night’s clash with Preston on the back of a fully merited win.

Owls: Grant, Buxton, Purse, Beevers, Spurr, Johnson (Miller 90), Potter, O’Connor, Gray (McAllister 77), Clarke (Sodje 74), Varney Unused substitutes: O’Donnell, Hinds, Simek, Jeffers Coventry: Westwood, Wright, Van Aanholt, Ward, Turner, Cork, Osbourne, Gunnarsson (Eastwood 55), Morrison, Best, McIndoe (Cain 71) Unused substitutes: Cranie, Konstantopoulos, Clarke, Grandison, Walker Referee: Colin Webster Attendance: 20,026

GRANT ON COVENTRY CONTROVERSY Lee Grant believes referee Colin Webster was right to rule that Leon Best’s first half effort during the Owls’ 2-0 win over Coventry on Saturday had not crossed the line. Former SWFC loanee Best thought he had halved the arrears at Hillsborough with a low header that some observers believe had gone over the line of the Leppings Lane goal. Owls keeper Grant dived down to his right behind the line itself to save, which was a major factor, he insists, in City thinking they were back in the game. He said: “The ball was on the line when I stopped it but I was behind the line by quite some way, so it may have looked as if the ball has to be over the line. “In my opinion, it didn’t cross the line, but it was extremely close. I don’t think the referee or the linesman could say it was definitely over the line because it was that tight. “Part of the ball may have been over but the whole of the ball has to cross the line as far as I’m aware.” In the bigger picture, Grant was delighted with the Sky Blues clean sheet, the Owls’ third of the season and particularly welcome after the dismal defeat at Derby last time out. The 26-year-old praised the backline and mooted that skipper Darren Purse was the man of the match as Wednesday returned to winning ways. He added: “In all honesty, I would have taken a win by hook or by crook. But we defended admirably and pretty much dominated the game. “Look at the firepower that Coventry have and that’s enough to cause a bit of concern, with the big lad Best up front alongside Clinton Morrison. “We knew it would be tough but we kept them out. The back five as a unit were all in it together but obviously I am really pleased for Darren, he got his goal and was probably our best player.”

Brian Laws was delighted with his side’s performance in the 2-0 win over Coventry City on Saturday. The Owls boss was particularly pleased with the way his team responded after a 3-0 reverse at Derby County last time out. A headed goal inside four minutes and a Leon Clarke penalty put Wednesday 2-0 up before the break but a couple of key decisions from the officials came under close scrutiny from Coventry manager, Chris Coleman. “I thought it was a great first half performance, we deserved the two-goal lead and could have had scored more so in terms of a response they ticked all of the boxes. The second half was a workmanlike performance to make sure we secured the result,” Laws said. “Coventry were always going to try to get a goal and open us up more after the break but I thought we defended well as a team without having to play well in the second half. “I was really delighted for the players, particularly the captain, Darren Purse, who has come in for a lot of criticism. He’s had a lot to bear on his shoulders over the past two weeks and you can’t ask for much from him than to get the first goal - he was outstanding and didn’t put a foot wrong. Darren has answered a few critics in that respect and he will want to put in a few more performances like that. The main thing though, was that he responded and justified being in the team. Wednesday’s lead looked to be threatened in first half stoppage time when Lee Grant scrambled to keep a deflected Leon Best effort out. The Coventry players protested to the referee that the ball had crossed the line but Laws believed the officials made the right decision. “We have a camera that is on this side of the field and it shows there is no way the linesman should give the ball as being over the line,” Laws stated. “Granty smothered it and wedged it against the post so there is no way the official could have adjudged it over the line because it certainly didn’t appear to from the

angle I have seen.” It was not an isolated incidence of controversy but Laws also commended the referee for reversing a second half decision to award the Sky Blues a penalty. “I think the biggest decision was regarding an outstanding tackle from Tommy Spurr,” the Wednesday manager said. “The referee was the wrong side and initially gave a penalty but again the assistant referee said it was a fair challenge and a good challenge and you have to applaud the officials for that because it is a brave decision. “Coventry might have felt hard done by with that decision and when you make a challenge like that you take a risk so it is vital to take the ball cleanly so I have to say well done to the player too.” Laws was pleased with the players who came into the team and will monitor his injury situation closely ahead of Tuesday night’s visit of Preston North End. “Luke Varney and Leon Clarke paired up very well together up front and worked hard. They pressed Coventry’s back four very hard and were very creative. “Marcus Tudgay’s neck problem has kept him out of the team but there would be a risk in playing him at this stage and we were only getting about 50 per cent out of him in the last couple of games and if we want to get the best out of any player he has to be performing at 100 per cent. Hopefully we will get him closer to the team selection for Tuesday, as is also the case with Richard Wood, who has been sick but also had a minor ankle injury. Etienne Esajas is also ill and picked up a knock on his knee so decisions had to be made and the players out there all responded. “Jermaine Johnson did well coming back into the side and kept their defenders on the back foot. His end product was a bit wayward today but he certainly caused Coventry plenty of problems. “On the whole I was very pleased because we showed we could play good football in the first half and we showed we could grind out a result in the second half.”

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Possibly the most significant team selection of Brian Laws’ tenure as the Wednesday supremo was avoided on Saturday morning as Richard Wood reported for duty with illness. The consequence? Lemsip and slippers for Wood, and a reprieve for Laws. The question in the lengthy build up to the game against Coventry was whether or not Laws would drop his flagship signing of the post-season and new club captain, Darren Purse. Having stood in very close proximity to the new skipper I can vouch for his physical presence, the man is colossal. However, a shaky outing on the opening day worsened into woeful displays of ineptitude accumulating into radio phone-ins, postmatch public houses and internet forums providing the medium for fans to call for his head on a plate, or at least for him to be relegated to the substitute’s bench. An address to the Wednesday Nation which admitted his performances weren’t good enough, tantamount to an apology in fact, did gain the club captain respect but didn’t deflect the significance of Laws’ team selection on Saturday. The question turned out to be purely rhetorical as Wood was ill and Beevers stepped in to give a solid performance alongside the critically battered Purse who, incidentally, showed signs of what a good signing he could be after a confidence boosting early goal. They say goals change games, this particular goal just might change a player.

DEPLETED BLADES DENTED BY IRON United’s depleted squad was exposed at Glanford Park on Saturday lunchtime. The Blades are now without a win in four matches after two goals from Grant McCann and one from Paul Hayes secured the victory for Scunthorpe, who repeated their home victory over United two years ago. Ched Evans netted but despite pushing the Iron back for long periods, the Blades were unable to return from the international break with a victory. With injuries causing headaches, Blackwell was forced into two changes - Kilgallon and Harper replacing Montgomery and Cresswell - whilst the manager also opted for a few positional changes, which were quickly evident. The formation was 4-4-2 at the start but with Davies at right-back, Walker further forward on the right flank and Little switching to the left. Scunthorpe had two Sheffield-born players in their squad - Mirfin started but Forte was amongst the substitutes. The Blades could only name six replacements. In the tight confines of Glanford Park, the opening exchanges were unsurprisingly rushed with little room for manoeuvre. Both sides created just one chance apiece in the first ten minutes, Togwell’s effort

was headed out by Kilgallon and Quinn’s volley, following a Little free-kick, was blocked. The Blades were starting to get a little foothold in the game and good work from Walker set up a chance for Evans but the striker was unable to get a shot away. On 15 minutes a free-flowing move saw Kilgallon appear on the left-wing, deliver a deep cross for Davies to win his header but the ball was cleared from the six-yard box by Jones and Harper, gobbling up the rebound, saw his shot deflected into the grateful arms of Murphy. More impressive wing work by Walker, getting the better of Williams, resulted in a shot from Little being blocked and the follow up from Harper being deflected wide. United were on top but Morgan survived a penalty appeal from Hooper before the home side took the lead on 23 minutes. A harmless-looking throw saw McCANN receive the ball 25 yards out and he was given the time to line up a half-volley which dipped over the shoulder of Bunn and into the top corner. A second almost followed just five minutes later when a move stretching from right to left, involving Hayes, O’Connor and McCann, saw Williams presented with a sight of goal but he fired well over. Bookings for Quinn and O’Connor were for comparable fouls in the space of a minute but United looked the stronger before the break, without forcing Murphy into a save. A Davies cross resulted in a diving header from Evans flying wide, Henderson was crowded out of a shooting opportunity and then Little curled just over after coming inside. There was a stirring start to the second period, especially

after McCann fired wide in the first minute. United were quickly back on the offensive and a ball through the middle of the defence saw Mirfin upend Evans right on the edge of the box. A yellow card awaited the defender and from the resulting freekick Quinn laid off for EVANS to fire through a crowded penalty into the corner of the net. Scunthorpe, however, regained the lead with their next attack, within two minutes of the leveller. Confusion between Bunn and Kilgallon presented the home side with a throw and after a quick re-start, Hooper headed down for HAYES to hammer past the Blades goalkeeper. Worse was to follow as the Iron extended their lead with the very next move. Hooper came out on top in a challenge with Kilgallon and after laying off, Wright’s shot hit Bunn’s right post before McCANN converted the rebound. Blackwell used all three of his substitutions within the space of ten minutes after the third Scunthorpe goal but United were struggling to penetrate the home defence. A Treacy shot was headed away and the Blades could have faced a penalty when Davies clashed with Hooper. The pressure in the last 15 minutes was coming from United but chances were still at a premium. A diving header from Davies was saved by Murphy, whilst the final chance of the game, on a miserable day, also went to the home side but Woolford’s header was saved by Bunn. Scunthorpe: Murphy, Williams, Togwell, Byrne, McCann (Woolford 77), Hayes, Hooper (Forte 83), Jones, Mirfin, O’Connor (Thompson 90), J. Wright. Unused: Lillis, A. Wright, Spence, Canavan.

Blades: Bunn, Morgan, Kilgallon (Reid 61), Henderson, Evans, Harper, Stewart (Taylor 70), Davies, Little (Treacy 63), Quinn, Walker. Unused: France, Bennett, Fortune.

NOT GOOD A VIEW ENOUGH, FROM THE SAYS BOSS TERRACE Kevin Blackwell offered an apology to the United supporters who travelled to Scunthorpe for Saturday’s Championship defeat. The Blades boss conceded that his players were disappointing in the 3-1 reversal at Glanford Park. A clearly dissatisfied Blackwell spoke to the media afterwards: “You can’t bring a big following and play like that - we just weren’t good enough, simple as that. We should have been good enough to get the result, despite the injuries. I apologise to the fans, we have let them down. “I felt that we were disappointing in a few areas, although we started well. We created a few chances but they scored with their first attack and that’s the way things are going for us at the minute. “A few people should have done better with their first goal, we were in the ascendancy at the time but we are getting punished for the slightest mistake.” Blackwell added: “We conceded a couple of awful goals and that is concerning me, we are usually frugal at the back. The back five is very different to what we had last season and that is the first time that that particular team has ever played together. “There have been massive changes at the club and we know have some youngsters who have come from other clubs who are still learning the game. It is tough at a club like Sheffield United because they have to learn to deal with the pressure.”

BLADES WILL SOLDIER ON Kevin Blackwell refused to blame United’s current injury problems for Saturday’s defeat at Scunthorpe United. United’s injury list is in double figures and Kyle Walker, Darius Henderson and Ched Evans had to play at Glanford Park, despite the trio not being fully fit. In addition, the Blades boss could only name six substitutes for the fixture. “It would be too easy for me to blame it on the injuries but I still think we had a team good enough to get a result,” said Blackwell. “I’ve never known injuries quite like it, but I still think we were good enough. I don’t want to be disrespectful to Scunthorpe, but we weren’t quite at it. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, injuries give chances for other players. It was an opportunity to put people under pressure but we didn’t do. We expect better.” Looking ahead to Tuesday evening’s encounter at Blackpool, Blackwell will have to take advice on the fitness of members of his squad before decided on his team. He adds: “Two or three lads who wouldn’t have normally played had to start at Scunthorpe. Kyle turned his ankle on Friday morning, we didn’t want expose him too much that’s why we played him further forward, and Henderson and Evans were both carrying injuries. “That’s the way it is at the moment, you just have to roll up your sleeves and get on with it.”

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton The weight on our shoulders

How do you solve a problem like expectation? Perhaps one of the most crucial problems confronting the modern day football club is that of managing the great expectations thrust upon them. For Sheffield United, expectation is weighing down upon the club with considerable force and ironically is one of the main barriers to the achievement of that which is expected. But expectations are high, and rightly so. When Sheffield United finally returned to the Premier League in 2006 the talk was not of survival, but of pushing up the league. The Blades’ expansive Chairman Kevin McCabe spoke of a four to five year plan to be challenging for European places. With the promise of considerable investment, Sheffield United looked set to cement their place in the top flight. This, unfortunately, has not been the case. The hotly disputed finale to the 2006/7 season saw the Blades condemned to second tier football once more. Of the many legacies left by the Blades’ ill-fated flirtation with top flight football, the most prominent is that expectations have now reached such a level that for many, even a play off place is not good enough. Performances are undoubtedly below par at present. The old chicken and egg argument about whether poor performances cause crowd unrest or vice versa rages, but if Saturday’s showing at Scunthorpe is anything to go by, both entities are not currently at the races. Vitriolic hatred was spilled on to the pitch from a vocal minority in the terraces, while casual indifference seemed to sum up the attitude of many in red and white on the pitch. What can be certain is that an unwanted division is tightening its grip on our football club, and if we’re not careful it will act as a self-imposed Trojan horse, destroying in minutes what took years to build.

EAGLES WANT TO FLY AT THE LANE The prospect of the city’s Rugby League club playing at Bramall Lane in the future took a step forward with a press conference at the stadium on last Friday afternoon. Sheffield Eagles officials confirmed their interest in playing fixtures at United’s ground, along with the intention of promoting Bramall Lane as a venue for showpiece Cup-ties and International games. Sheffield United have agreed in principle but at this stage stress that such an arrangement still requires formal agreements ratified by the Football League, The Football Association and the Rugby Football Association, all of which have significant criteria to satisfy.

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS Weekly Comic Gems A Prayer for daddy “Dear God, this year please send some clothes for all those poor ladies in Daddy’s computer, Amen.”

Sick Leave I urgently needed a few days off work, but, I knew the Boss would not allow me to take leave. I thought that maybe if I acted ‘Crazy’ then he would tell me to take a few days off. So I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises. My co-worker (who’s blonde) asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb so that the Boss might think I was ‘Crazy’ and give me a few days off. A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked, ‘What in the name of good GOD are you doing?’ I told him I was a light bulb. He said, ‘You are clearly stressed out.’ Go home and recuperate for a couple of days.’ I jumped down and walked out of the office... When my co-worker (the blonde) followed me, the Boss asked her, ‘..And where do you think you’re going?!’

I am always delighted to accede to any request to give a mention to anybody who is holding a charity evening for a worthwhile cause. I received a text from Steve Rhythm, advising me that on Wednesday 28th October at Farm Road Social to help raise money for the Children’s Scanner Appeal, a very worthy cause. Appearing with Steve on the night will be The Tony Lewis Band, Freak Out, Sammy Gayle and Danny Herrod . I hope this mention puts a few more bums on seats for what should be a very entertaining evening. I mentioned the evening to John Alex when I went to see him perform at the Steelmelters in Killamarsh, and he said that he knew Steve Rhythm as that guy who does a lot for various charities, which says much about this excellent man. John Alex was

superb on the night and is a real master of his craft. It was nice to have a drink with my old mate Deano and his attractive partner Becky and Robbie H who had come to see John on a rare Friday night off. The previous evening, I went to see The Joel White Experience at the White Swan in Dronfield, and was totally blown away by the talent of Joel, son of legendary local guitarist Frank White. He is an amazing keyboard player with a great singing voice which reminded me of Georgie Fame, and together with Dean Rawling, a fantastic animated drummer produced a really good night to remember. As I can just about manage a three timer these days, I sought something a bit different on Saturday evening and did not have to travel far to get it. The Beautiful Sounds, a tribute band to the Beautiful South were appearing at the Hilltop Club in Dronfield and were a very competent six piece band, who were well appreciated by the knowledgeable audience. Now that we have had the funeral of Stephen Gately, ren’s Hospital perhaps it will put an end ild Ch d iel eff in Aid of Sh Scanner Appeal to the many tasteless texts Kids’ I have received, all about EFFIELD S2 SOCIAL, SH OM 8PM AD his sexual preference and RO FR FARM LIVE FROM OCTOBER 2009 not one about his ability to TH 28 ... effort to prolong my life, (I have a young girlfriend with whom I want to spend many years) by stopping smoking, a habit I have had since childhood. I was never fat as a kid as I spent my dinner on Park Drive or Woodbines, and the habit has remained with me ever since. Sacrificing my school meals was the obvious way to fund the habit, but now that I am old and fairly well off I am quitting purely for health and not economic reasons. I am on a course of tablets called Chamonix and will keep you posted on my success or otherwise. Gary Sinclair compered the Yahoo Yodel in Covent Garden London this week and shared the stage with X Factor star Sinitta. The highlight of the evening was when he interviewed Pixie Lott, fresh from winning Most Promising Newcomer at the prestigious MTV Awards ceremony. Gary received much publicity at this event and it may well lead to bigger and better opportunities for this top disc jockey and radio presenter. I mentioned that top Blades supporter, Steve Cowans is presenting an evening at the Platinum Suite, Bramall Lane on Saturday 14th November, but I had few details at that time. I can now announce that top Hollywood actor and Handsworth lad Sean Bean will be present and the cabaret will be provided by top female vocalist Stephanie King. I have attended events organised by Steve before and can say that they have all been successful. Howard says that if when you stop smoking you turn into a fat nasty tempered person, your nearest and dearest should forgive all this and respect you for what you have achieved. There is a bit of self interest there.

For only the fourth time in its 56 year history, the show will take place outside London and this is the first time the event will be held at the Sheffield Arena, Sheffield, with the show being live on air from 7-9pm on BBC One and Radio 5 Live. The show will be presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Jake Humphrey. Once the ten nominees are announced, the public will then be asked to vote for who they think should be Sports Personality on the night (13 December). People will be able to phone in to vote. Voting details will be announced soon. This year’s show will be the biggest ever with around 11,000 people in attendance. This year has been another fantastic year with Jenson Button shocking the world of F1, England’s cricketers regaining the Ashes and their female counterparts claiming a clean sweep of the Ashes, the World Cup and the World Twenty20. We’ve seen a first Irish Grand Slam in 61 years in this year’s Six Nations, a fantastic World Athletics Championships with golds for Jessica Ennis and Philips Idowu, Andy Murray reaching number two in the world; and Manchester United taking yet another Premier League title. The event will be attended by former winners of the main award and many of the biggest names from the world of sport. Barbara Slater, Director, BBC Sport said: “The reaction of viewers and those members of the public who have been able to attend the event live in the last three years has been fantastic and we hope this year in Sheffield will continue that trend. It’s been another great year of sport and the event promises to be another one to remember.” Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Many of Britain’s sporting heroes have come out of the Sheffield melting pot, and we have a strong reputation for

staging high-profile events such as Grand Prix Athletics, the European Swimming Championships and each year the World Snooker Championships. “With this year’s competition already tipped to be the biggest ever Sports Personality of the Year event, we are thrilled to be hosting it in our city, and I’m looking forward to celebrating the achievements of each of the ten deserving finalists at Sheffield Arena in December.” Tickets for BBC Sports Personality of the Year went on sale on Tuesday 20 October at 9am, priced £35 (subject to booking fee) and will be available in person at the venue online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk or the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56.

week for coverage of the Rotherham United game on Saturday. The Saturday Sports Show on Radio Nightingale has brought live coverage of the Millers home games for well over 15 years to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. We missed the first half of last season whilst we raised funds to purchase new equipment to accommodate the move to Don Valley and unfortunately we’ve missed the last few matches of this season due to holidays. It would be great to expand our sports team membership to ensure that we can maintain coverage of all games throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being involved in this do get in touch with us. As it’s the first match we’ve covered since the return of Ronnie Moore we’re probably last to say it but ‘welcome back Ronnie’. The sports team were full of enthusiasm for the game, all predicting Rotherham United wins, however the 0-0 scoreline was a point gained although somewhat disappointing. Thank you to the Coutts Charitable Trust for their donation received this week towards our planned upgrade of equipment. The Rotherham General Hospital have their own electricity generators to reduce the risks of power failure. However to make sure the main and backup supplies are working there is a routine programme of testing which results in a short break in power to Radio Nightingale bringing our broadcasts to an abrupt stop. To avoid this we have to have an Uninterruptable Power Supply and since our last studio upgrade our current model can hold everything together for about 0.5 seconds – not really long enough! This donation means that we have the cash in place

of holding the essential broadcasting equipment for long enough to avoid any sudden stops. No matter how much you hate to admit it in October, Christmas is on the way. The shops are full of tinsel and cards and I think the queues are already starting to build. Don’t forget you can use the Radio Nightingale webshop to avoid it all and search over 5 million products in one place www.buy.at/radionightingale Plus you’ll be raising money for Radio Nightingale too and it doesn’t cost you anything additional to your purchases. There are over 150 retailers available in the webshop, which should just about cover anything you could need and if not then the latest addition to our webshop should. We’re really excited to welcome eBay, the largest online auction site now features in the shop and whatever you buy eBay will give 30% of their fees to Radio Nightingale. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia.

Jumping forward 33 years to 2009 and we know that there have been many changes but what hasn’t changed is the prestige of being a clubland award winner. When the ‘OC’ stopped being published The Mercury took up the promotion and hosting of the awards and today’s awards carry, probably, as much prestige, if not more, due to the fact that the competition is harder due to the fact that there are more acts and nominations come from further afield. This year has seen the introduction of internet voting and you can vote direct online by logging on to www.mercurynewspaper. co.uk. Hot off the press I can reveal the names of some of this years

front runners. Here’s the list in no particular order and in no particular category: Star Star, Gary Phillips, Sunny Daye, Jimmy Carol, Mark Lawrence, Andrew Kennedy, Clair Roberts, Dream On, Dance Nation, Soul Story, Nick Page, Tristan Drew, Gutter Band, Ellie James, Kerry Nichols, Manhattans, Sarah Lee Scott, One Way, Alan Turner, BJ White, CJ Harper, Debbie Dee, Laughing Legends, Kerfuffle, Stuart Eden, Abby Leigh Rowan, Rob Linacre, Evoke, Carl Taylor, Mens Club, Anita Madigan.

BRING BACK THE ROAD SHOWS

In my opinion artists should keep their own identity, i.e. the basics of their show – rock country – clean – dirty, whatever. The booking should be made via the Agent and the Concert Secretary and advertised in advance at the venue. If you don’t like it, don’t go. If the artist is not suitable don’t book them. From the artist’s point of view, especially solo singers it’s sole destroying to be on stage singing beautifully to an audience that doesn’t appreciate your talent. Comments I hear are ‘we prefer bands’ and ‘we wanted rock’. This is not the artists fault – see your Concert Secretary.

On of the things that used to bring people into clubs a few years ago were the brewery roadshows. Usually 3 acts would appear at a club and give a fantastic evenings entertainment. So what I’m asking, in these hard times for clubs and to get people back in, can someone try to bring these back? They used to be midweek when clubs had nothing happening in their concert rooms and would feature a comedian/compere singer or duo and a top local band and from memory you had to book early to get this show as you always struggled to get spare date . This used to be good advertising for the breweries and good revenue for the clubs so it worked both ways and in times like these it would be nice for the breweries to try to do something again like this for the clubs as at the end of the day without the clubs and pubs they wouldn’t have an outlet to sell their products so come on can we try to resurrect these brilliant evenings and see our clubs full again. Well on our travels this week we first went to see Bernadette Wilde at Wickersley and yet again she didn’t fail to deliver and it was nice to see Dave Joule in there too. Friday was the Spandau Ballet concert so no clubland I’m afraid. On Saturday went to see Lorriane Crosby at Rotherham Trades. Now this club, since they had the flood, is really a smart venue and from the attendance a popular venue on a Saturday then for the second half we travelled back to the Ashfield in Barnsley to see Rock Legacy and the club was heaving and still was at 11.45. They had 2 temporary guitarists during the second half one of them female, who was very good, and a guy from a band called Zephyr who I have yet to see but just on his performance with this band we will look forward to. Also they had a temporary drummer for one song. This band, for me, are getting stronger every time I see them. On Sunday we were off to see Stone Idols at Barnsley East Dene and it was about three quarters full but a good atmosphere. This band used to be the band used by Janie Mac kenzie who has now gone solo. They covered a wide variety of songs from glam rock to Kaiser Chiefs and in time they will start to bring a better following. The only criticism I have of these is that they seemed to waffle a lot between songs. This Thursday it’s of to Wickersley again to see Here’s Johnny who are really growing on me and as yet I’ve not had any response regarding his charity gig.

Yours Richard Favell

Re: Children in the Club letter Dear Sir I am writing regarding your quote in issue 819 about children in clubs. My son Peter Favell, who is a variety singer was approached by the Concert Secretary from Staveley Miners Welfare with a view to singing on Boxing Night three years ago. It seemed a great idea as it was local and all our family, friends and their children would attend, some forty or so people, guaranteeing a very good night for all. Nearer the date Ron, the Concert Secretary rang saying there was an issue with allowing children in, but after several Committee meetings the gig was allowed and all members’ children would be allowed in on this one occasion, with rule regarding behaviour etc. Well what a night, the room was full, in fact tables and chairs had to be brought in from other rooms. The young teenage girls danced all night; a real carnival atmosphere. The Club had not opened the previous Boxing Day night due to lack of support. The same format was repeated again with the same tremendous success. The point I am making is that on long holiday weekends at least one night could be organised for families with appropriate entertainment. It works in many ways including introducing young future members. Secondly, RE: Phil Spencer of Handsworth

A NIGHT AT THE CLUBS LIKE THE GOOD OLD DAYS Sheffield Trades and Labour Club, Duke Street which opened way back in 1981, is determined to keep up to date, to encourage people old and new. Despite the bad times with the recession, the smoking ban, and the closure of the neighbouring Park Hill flats, the club decided to bring in something different, and aproached Sue & Paul’s Karaoke show, who are well known throughout South Yorkshire. The Karaoke shows are run alternate saturdays, and have been a great success. On the other alternate Saturdays, excellent acts are provided by Cee Bee Variety Agency. Sue and Paul got together with the club, and it was decided that they would stage a talent competition, ‘Trades got Talent’ , based on the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ show. There was a great response, with many acts taking to the stage. The competition ran from August to October. The Grand Final was on Saturday 10th October. The club was at it’s full capacity. The concert room was buzzing with excitement and as the judges took their seats, the 8 finalists each put on an amazing performance, it was a fantastic night to remember. Congratulations went to the winner Sarah Cheeseman, with second place going to Erika Wilkinson, and in third was Jessica Armstrong. The other acts were all outstanding - Carly Wellington, Naomi Jo, Paul & Ash, Tommo, and Emma Whapplington.

BACK TO BLACK! Nine Black Alps are back. The Manchester outfit have been hiding low for a while, but they’re sure to wake you up to their punk-grunge revival once again on the 27th at the Leadmill, after releasing their third album, “Locked Out From The Inside.” They can do stuff with guitar strings like no other. Repetitive, whining solos beat out the most an instrument can offer, carrying uplifting, heavy tracks such as ‘Unsatisfied.’ ‘Cosmopolitan’ opens with four simple notes, forming the basis to an explosive frantic, song that is over in little more than 2 minutes. Enough time to get the veins bulging, heart beating and sweat pouring. They were named after a line in a Sylvia Plath poem. From their inception in late 2003, the band’s energetic live performances earned them a hardcore fanbase after playing for only a few months on the Manchester music scene. In 2004 the band were signed to Island Records and spent the year touring the UK and recording their first studio album in Los Angeles. So kids get ready to get down get sweaty don’t miss this one…..If you can’t afford it, ask your mum! NINE BLACK ALPS: The Leadmill, Tuesday 27th October, Doors: 7pm, Price: £10,Age limit: 14s+

MEET YOUR MAKER! Reverend And The Makers are back! with new material and anthem-packed shows! Still people out there who don’t know about this great Sheffield band so here goes again; Previously a member of the short-lived bands Judan Suki and 1984, McClure had a reputation in Sheffield as both a songwriter and a poet, and became something of a mentor to Alex Turner, who would become an overnight sensation as the leader of the group Arctic Monkeys (Turner mentions McClure’s 1984 in his song ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’). When Arctic Monkeys began developing a massive buzz on the basis of internet circulation of their demos, McClure was offered six-figure deals by record companies to put together a band that sounded just like them. However, even though he was out of work, he decided to follow his one muse and formed Reverend And The Makers with guitarist Tom Jarvis, Ed Cosens on bass, keyboard players Joe Moskow and Laura Manuel, drummer Richy Westley, and Stuart Doughty on percussion. The band made its live debut in 2005, and in the spring of 2006 Arctic Monkeys took McClure and his band on the road as their opening act. In time, Reverend And The Makers developed a loyal following and could sell out 1,000-capacity clubs in Sheffield. Mark Jones saw the band and

was strongly impressed, promptly signing them to his Wall Of Sound label. Reverend And The Makers’ first single, ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’ appeared in May 2007, and included an appearance by one of McClure’s lyrical inspirations, John Cooper Clarke, on the B-side, ‘The Last Resort’. A second single, ‘He Said He Loved Me’, followed, with the group’s first album, The State Of Things, appearing in shops in September 2007. Now the band are back with new material and play the O2 Academy on the 24th, book your tickets this will be a sell out! Reverend & the Makers: O2 Academy, Saturday 24th October, Door time: TBC, Show time: TBC

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT! The music of the Dogs D’Amour can be described as a mixture of The Rolling Stones and Faces style roots rock and Hanoi Rocks style glam punk. Unlike popular bands of the time, who had misogynistic themes, the Dogs D’Amour relies more on romantic themes and poetic style lyrics. Tyla the engmatic lead singer was also a huge fan of Charles Bukowski, and many of his lyrics, delivered with an impelling throaty rasp, were tinged with humorous irony and pathos, reflecting Bukowski’s prosaic style. The Dogs’ sound was firmly rooted in American blues music, and Jo Almeida’s unique and distinctive slide guitar was reminiscent of blues masters like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Charlie Patton. The Dogs began to show a strong country & western side on 1989’s Errol Flynn (released as King Of The Thieves in the United States), a few years before alt-country became in vogue. Hey! What can you say the show is always good everyone knows that! – See ya down at the Corp on the 24th.

Artist: Michael Jackson Single/Movie: This Is It Released 28th October This is a new single, but only kinda. It’s really an unreleased song from 14 years ago. Musically what we have here is a balled that is really pretty good. It’s not one of his best but it’s still a really good song and a lot better than what many other current artists can muster up at the moment. It’s hard to be critical, not only because of the quality of Michael’s vocal on this, but also you can’t help listening to it with a feeling of sadness that comes automatically with his recent death. Now as you read this, things may have changed regarding the release of this song. It was going to be available as a download on the 14th October, but as I’m writing this, all that seems to have changed. Seemingly, you will only be able to get this song if you buy the ‘This Is It’ best of album due for release on the 28th October or as part of the, as yet, un-detailed EP release on the 26th October. Which is a shame, for one, many people already have the Best of Michael Jackson in one form or another and don’t want to be forced into buying a full album just to get one track, and two, it means it wont be eligible for the charts. To have a Number One single would have been a nice thing I think. My advice is to go to www.myspace.com/michaeljackson and listen to the track on your computer or iphone as often as you want and it won’t cost you a penny. No sense of guilt needed, if Michael Jackson’s record company didn’t want you to do that they would have just put a snippet of it up there and not the full track. So it does seem odd that

reviews by presley

they won’t let you go and buy the song individually online? Of course all this is just a precursor to the movie of the same name. It really is a wonderful thing, that even though the World lost Michael just before what may have been his last ever shows, the whole of the rehearsals were filmed. The full stage show, full production as well as loads of backstage rehearsals, the lot. A new snippet is on Youtube at the moment from the movie, of Jackson doing Human Nature and it’s brilliant. He starts with no backing at first and his voice, his demeanour, everything is fabulous. This certainly wasn’t a man on his last legs. The movie is going out in cinema’s first and I think its going to be the music film of the decade without a doubt. Even if you’re not a fan (and I’m not particularly) I think you should go see it and see a real genius at work one last time.

Few had turned out to bid Gladys farewell and help Tito through his grief. I’d estimate 2,500, which is less than a third of the arena’s capacity. While it was one of the least attended shows I’ve ever seen at the arena, Gladys and Tito delivered nearly three hours of quality. Of course, many were waiting to see what Tito would say about his younger brother. Very little as it happened. By way of an introduction to a series of blues numbers (during which he proved himself an impressive guitarist) he said: “I definitely have the blues.” Then asked for a round of applause: “Let’s give a hand for Michael, wasn’t he great stuff?” And the reported musical tribute he and his 11piece band were performing on this tour was in fact a medley of Jackson 5 numbers -- Rockin’ Robin, I Want You Back, ABC and the poignant I’ll Be There. The latter prompted a standing ovation, mostly for the lead vocals of Nicole, a member of the extensive Jackson clan. But it wasn’t designed to bring us down - Tito sported an afro wig declaring “I want to go back.” There was more messing around with his band of “dogs” as he called them. And despite the small number of people in front of him, the man in the bright yellow suit looked to be having a ball for an hour. Gladys Knight was no less professional if a little more Vegas (which has been home for three decades) and talkative. Her three best known tunes -- Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me, License To Kill and Midnight Train To Georgia -- were evenly spread throughout a 110 minute set. The range of covers dated back to 1961 (Every Beat Of My Heart) through to the early 90s (Boy II Men’s End Of The Road). The highlight was a Motown medley with remaining Pip and elder brother Merald joining her on stage: Dancing In The Street, My Guy, My Girl, Stop In The Name Of Love, Mercy Mercy Me. There was no denying her incredible voice. If you chose to spend your money on other entertainment you missed out on one of the shows of the year.
