SHEFFIELD WINDOW SHOWS HAWLEY’S TRUELOVE FOR WORDS A musician and songwriter whose lyrics give fans worldwide a window into the city of Sheffield, can now see his words take centre stage in a shop window in his hometown. Lyrics from the latest album by Sheffield’s Richard Hawley, Truelove’s Gutter, feature in a special display – called Window on 18 – to celebrate the 18th birthday of Sheffield’s literature festival, Off the Shelf. Hawley’s lyrics appear alongside texts by an 18 year old in Sheffield, an established Sheffield based author and local school children all reflecting on the age 18. And Sheffield artist, Martin Bedford, who was the illustrator of the front cover of this year’s festival programme, took it one step further by designing four different posters using Hawley’s lyrics and the three other pieces of writing. The posters appear in the shop window at the heart of Sheffield’s city centre. Eighteen year old Eilidh (corr) Brown, former member of the Sheffield Young Writers Group (who has just started at Oxford University) wrote about how it feels to be 18. Writer Debjani
Chatterjee (corr) OBE, who is based in Sheffield, took a look back for her piece of text writing about how it felt to be 18 as a would-be writer hoping to come to this country. And in the fourth and final poster, four children from Tinsley Junior School give their very different interpretations of what they envisage the world could have in store for them when they become 18 – spanning everything from being able to talk to animals to becoming president! Cllr Sylvia Dunkley, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism from Sheffield City Council said: “We’re delighted that Richard Hawley, one of Sheffield’s most famous sons, has joined with us to celebrate Off the Shelf’s 18th birthday. I would like to thank him, all of the writers and the artist Martin F Bedford who together have created the artwork for this window. “The Off the Shelf Festival is known for finding innovative ways to promote words and writing, such as its Text and the City series of public artworks where poems are displayed in prominent public places, and this shop window is another example where the
love of words can be demonstrated in new ways and in new places.” The shop window is opposite Specsavers on Pinstone Street in Sheffield city centre and the display is there until the end of this month. The Sheffield Showcase is an outdoor gallery in Sheffield city centre in the shops around the Sevenstone development. It is the result of work by local businesses, artists, students of retail, designers and retailers, the Council and others. Off the Shelf is Sheffield’s annual festival of writing and reading. Organised by Sheffield City Council, it is one of the leading literary festivals in the North of England.

CELEBRITY LIGHT SWITCH ON Christmas has officially kicked off at Crystal Peaks in true celebrity style with the special appearance of Emmerdale’s Carl King, actor Tom Lister who illuminated the shopping centre’s festive lights at the big Switch On event on Thursday evening. Actor Tom Lister, who plays the bad boy soap star in ITV’s soap Emmerdale was welcomed by a centre full of adoring fans. After the plunger had been pressed
and the centre had been lit up, Tom Lister stuck around to meet and greet his adoring fans, sign autographs and have photos taken with many people in the audience. The evening was a great success for local and national charities too, with Tom Lister generously donating his appearance fee to Bluebell Wood Children’s hospice a worthwhile cause that Crystal Peaks also supports. Another local charity, Cash for
Kids made it along to the centre with their trusty mascot, Courage the Cat. Pudsey Bear from Children In Need held a collection throughout the day in the centre which raised £200, one of the many fund-raising efforts organised by Greggs. Crystal Peaks held a competition on the evening of the light switch on for the chance to win an impressive two hampers, filled with goodies from many of the retailers worth more than £300. Tom Lister

CHILDREN IN NEED CHARITY CYCLE EVENT
Sam Jones health club on the Crystal Peaks Retail Park will be holding a Children In Need Charity Cycling event on the Friday 20th November at 10am till 4pm, in the main central area of the Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre, top of the escalators. A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLEHILL
You may have all realised by now that apart from validating that our spirit is eternal I am also on a mission to make this life easier for my self and those around me. So when I find a tool, technique, or a mind set that helps me flourish, I want to share it with you. Lately I have been aware of how much I worry about little things and allow them to escalate in my head to gigantic proportions. Even though I am aware that something will grow the more I concentrate on it, I occasionally allow life to sneak up on me with its hectic agendas and little stop watch. It is when I begin to get stressed and tired that I realise its time to re-evaluate. Wouldn’t it be nice if we found ways of avoiding the stress in the first place? Truthfully most of what we worry about isn’t even important. The first step is to be aware of the little things that can build up and make us stressed. Then we have to look at them realistically and then basically, knock ‘em on the head. There is a list below of popular misconceptions that make us believe these little things are important followed by thoughts we could choose to adopt instead. Although this is not an extensive list, it will give you an idea of how to chill out a bit. Perfection and inner peace go hand in hand – no they don’t nobody’s perfect if we were there would be nothing more to learn and we wouldn’t need to be here. Things have to be a certain way – who says – and isn’t that just a matter of perception anyway. I should be peaceful, calm and organised - this notion makes us fearful of not being calm and peaceful and causes more stress then anything else. There is so much I have to do – ok fair enough but ask yourself if you had an hour to live which of these
things would you choose to do? Make a list prioritise it and work through it one at a time if at the end of the day there’s stuff left on the list so be it the world wont explode. People will think ill of me or I may let them down – try agreeing with any criticism aimed at you (whether valid or not, again it’s a matter of perception) and watch it disappear. There will always be people who commend or condemn you, usually based on how happy they are or how stressed. People expect certain things from me – you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Think through the consequences of choosing not to do something that someone else expects you to do. If you can live with it then you have another choice.

LOCAL TEENS RECORD CHARITY CD A group of talented teenagers from our region called ‘Paper Tigers’ are releasing an album of original material and will be hosting an evening of entertainment at Davys Sporting club down Darnall this Friday (20th). These talented teenagers are raising money and awareness for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance by playing music, written and performed by themselves. They became aware of the fact that these air ambulances and those who staff them are completely run on donations as no funding is given to them, as with hospice care. An incident in Rother Valley Country Park in February of this year brought all this into sharp focus when a fellow student lost her life, in a sledding tragedy. Others were rescued. This effectively made the community very aware. The group now put on concerts and are becoming well known as ‘Paper Tigers And Guests’ and they have compiled an album of their work called ‘Seven Hills’ this number being a song about Sheffield. They are initially two bands combined ‘Paper tigers’and ‘Following the goodbye’ along with two teenage girls who are ‘The two Lucies’ there are eight in all, all completely committed to raising money for this worthwhile Charity. The album of 11 songs will be sold for £5 per copy and will be available to buy at the event detailed below. DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY INTERVIEW How are you feeling about the new album ‘The Performance’? I’m ecstatic. I never thought it would turn out this way. It’s more than I ever dared hope it would be. 11 fantastic songs written for me by 11 different writers. I don’t know, it’s a different voice, there’s parts of my voice I never used before, a ‘head’ voice, and this quiet calm. Because everybody associates me with belting ‘Goldfinger,’ and it’s more or less true. But my vocal coach said I had this head voice and this lovely softness, but I never used it and she said I should. On this album, it came out. I think people are going to be confused by it, they’ll say ‘Where did these notes come from?’ because they all associate me with the big voice, but there’s a control on this record that’s incredible. You have a vocal coach, then? Yes. Not singing so much nowadays, whenever I have to sing I go to her just to check that I’m doing it right, and it gives me confidence.People think pop singers shouldn’t do that, that it’s only for opera singers. Not at all. Every morning, for half an hour, I would vocalise before going into the studio to record my new album. It’s been more than 20 years since your last studio album of all-new songs. Had you felt that the material being presented to you wasn’t right? Well, not only that. I’d really retired, to tell you the truth, and I was just coming out for special occasions. These writers have brought me back. Only that could have done it, and it was a challenge, because you wouldn’t have thought they were my songs. I took them on holiday with me, and I would say ‘I can’t do this, they’re too difficult.’ But I was listening to the way the writers were singing them, and trying to sing in their key, which never helps. It wasn’t until I actually went into the studio, with a piano, and put my voice on, that I started to get excited. I could hear myself. There are a lot of lyrics appropriate to your life on the album. One of the most personal is the Manic Street Preachers’ song ‘The Girl From Tiger Bay’. How did you feel when you heard that song and read the lyric for the first time? Very emotional. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, because I felt ‘it’s too personal.’ But then they’re all personal. But there’s something about Tiger Bay, naturally, because I’m from there, that is terribly personal. These writers have got inside my head to write these songs. At the end, I heard someone sobbing, and I didn’t realise it was me. I love this record. How was David Arnold to work with? He’s very gentle, he lets you find your own way. He’s very cool, very laid back, otherwise he would have made me very nervous, but he put me completely at
ease. David was great to be with, and I love him for allowing my music director, Mike Dixon, to be there, to help me, because Mike knows me. You recorded the album at a lodge studio in Ireland, didn’t you? In the country, yes. I thought ‘Oh, it’s going to be lovely,’ and it rained every day! But we stayed there, ate there, slept there and recorded there, and it was great fun, in spite of the rain.It was great fun to be all together. After the day’s work we were able to go to the dining room and have dinner and then play games together. Oh, and then there was the pub. I became a great barmaid. Did you ever expect still to be an entertainer at this stage of your life? I’ve been on this wave ever since I was discovered and I can’t get off. It was like I was meant to do it. Even when I had my first job in a factory, and I was wrapping up enamelware for export, I’d just sing, and people would stop working. The supervisor would say ‘Bassey, what do you think you’re doing? All of you, get back to work.’ The whole factory would stop. I didn’t realise what I was doing. How different is it for young pop stars emerging now, compared to when you were starting in the mid-1950s? These days, if kids do get discovered, it’s sad, it’s not lasting, because they’re not taken care of. I was taken care of. They’re instant stars, they can’t handle it, and the inevitable happens, they turn to drugs and drink. My audience grew up with me, and introduced me to their children, and their children. So in the end I have a family audience. How do you go about preparing your live set? I get a great kick out of that. You have to have a beginning, middle and an end, then the other songs fall in between. I find that so exciting, to put an act together, to find songs. You lift them but you can’t keep doing that, or you break them. The next song, you must bring them down gently. So how are you feeling about the Electric Proms show? That’s going to be another challenge, and I love a challenge. You make it creative. What I’m looking forward to is performing songs from the new album for the first time, that really will be a special moment. It’s very interesting rehearsing, to find out which song should follow another. I find that exciting, building a new show. Is there one song on the record that you particularly love? I love all of them. But the Pet Shop Boys’ song (“The Performance of My Life”) got right into my head, and made me sob, and not many songs do that. When I heard that, after doing all the other songs, it was just too much for me. I don’t need to write a book. The record is my autobiography.
A TRIP TO HONALULU WMC I was going to reply to Mr Dereks response to the article I wrote basically to remind him that the whole of the Friday rock night conception was nicked from the Firth Park WMC. Not a brain wave from you,or anyone at the Bellhouse I could also answer you back on all the points that you brought up once again but I’m not going to get into a war of words with you. I haven’t really had time over the past couple of weeks because we have been on holiday. My partner and I have just visited the beautiful island of Hawaii, gorgeous beaches,friendly people, loads of fat rich Yanks there too.The only thing that lets the place down is the entertainment.On our first night myself and Dalek [that’s my partner] visited the Honalulu Surfers & WMC. The place was nearly empty when we walked in and

not much atmosphere at all plus it was $5.00 on the door to get in,which didn’t help matters. Dalek, my partner, has been on loads of courses so he knew what the problem was straight away. He found the con/sec a Mr Craig Buckhim Dannoes and gave him lots of advice on were he was going wrong. Dalek also told him that he had seen a really good turn earlier in the day who would fill the club especially on thursdays and to drop the door charge,introduce indoor surfing, (Dalek thought there was a niche for that) and also give the people coming in some free lager as an incentive. Buckhim assured Dalek that he would give it a go. So the following night we went along to the Honolulu and we could tell straight away that Daleks idea had worked. As we entered the club the club president Steve MaBarret gave me a piece
of rock.I wondered why he had done this,but I found out later that because of Daleks thick Shiregeen/Tarn accent, Buckhim had thought that Dalek had said give everyone some free LAVA instead of lager with it being a volcanic island and all that. Anyway by 8.00pm there wasn’t a seat to be had anywhere in the club,and it was the same at the club down the road plus most of the bars within a five mile radius were also full, so Dalek had saved the day once again, he really is my hero. The wedding was lovely. After the wedding, at the wedding dinner, the bride-broom leaned over and said to the groom-broom, “I think I am going to have a little whisk broom!!!” “IMPOSSIBLE !!” said the groom broom. Are you ready for this? Brace yourself; this is going to hurt. ............ “WE HAVEN’T EVEN SWEPT TOGETHER!”
Catholic Coffee Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee.
I was pleased to be invited to the opening night of Kamal’s Curry Inn, in Dronfield, and what a night it turned out to be. All the food and all the drinks were on the house, and in consequence, I left at the end of the night with a stomach full of wonderful food, a happy alcohol induced persona, a partly satisfied girlfriend and not a brass farthing spent. Thank you Afaz for the kind invitation, and I was pleased to attend again two days later with eighteen other friends to celebrate the birthday of my good mate Russ Dennett. Saturday was a day without football in Sheffield, (no change there then). Sheffield United have still not recorded a win since the Sheffield derby and the fickle fans are beginning to call for the manager’s head. Should this happen, I believe I have discovered the ideal man with the right managerial skills to replace him. I refer to Steve Cowens, a committed Blade, and the man responsible for putting on my Saturday night entertainment, an evening with Sean Bean. The evening was a huge success, with Hollywood legend Sean making himself available for photographs with one and all, and was very approachable. I find it very refreshing when people never forget their roots when they have made it to the top of their respective professions. I certainly haven’t and visit Bradway on a regular basis.
The expression climate change has always had me wondering, no more so than when I noticed that my tomato plants are still bearing fruit, my rose trees are still budding and my gardens are still a profusion of colour without having any winter plants. I wonder what animals who hibernate think about it all. The hedgehogs et al must be thinking to themselves, ‘when is it bedtime?’ Surely winter will come along soon or are the seasons going to swap over and it will snow in June and we will be able to spend Christmas on the beach? Speaking of Christmas, it is little over five weeks away, and shopping is now really getting into full swing. Prices have really come down with a bump, making a few shoplifters redundant. Having an eight year old boy to buy for this year allows me to be a little self indulgent. I think about whether I would like to play with this or that, and can’t wait, for the first time in years to put out the drink and mince pies out on Christmas Eve, what joy! Also, the days of children receiving an apple and an orange as presents are well and truly over. Can you imagine that actually happening? Ask anybody over seventy who came from humble surroundings and they will be only too pleased to tell you what it was like in the ‘olden days’ Thursday night should be a cracking evening at Wadsley Bridge Club, who host the prestigious Mercury Awards Night.
I will be particularly pleased to see Glen Dale, the most worthy winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award. I intend to promote a benefit night for Glen in the new year, so get ready for me with the requests for raffle prizes etc. in order that we may truly recognise the enormous contribution Glen has made to the national and local entertainment scene. I bumped into Ryan Mishcow, forgive the spelling Ryan, at the Sean Bean evening. This lad, admirably coached by top vocal coach Stephanie King, can really sing and I was pleased to hear that he will shortly be embarking on a solo career. Watch out for him and go and support him when you see him advertised locally. I am constantly asked about Derek Tomlinson, and as I know little about him, other that he is a friend of Gary Phillips which is good enough for me, it is difficult to respond. What I do know is that some remarks are in favour and some quite the opposite, which tells me one thing. He is doing a great job and this newspaper is better for his contribution. Please continue in the same vein Derek, as your piece is the next thing I read after my own column of course. Anybody who knows me well will tell you that I am not the conceited, arrogant, biased pig that I try to portray myself, and that in reality I am ten times worse.

TORVILL & DEAN’S DANCING ON ICE 2010 UK TOUR After wowing more than 750,000 people across the country in previous years with stunning ice performances, skating legends Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean will headline the fourth UK tour of Dancing on Ice and lead an all-star celebrity line-up to Arenas across the country. The show returns to Sheffield Arena for six spectacular performances between Thursday 8th & Sunday 12th April 2010. Tickets priced £65, £55, £40 & £32.50 went on general sale at 9am on Monday 2nd November. All of the celebrities will be trained and choreographed by Torvill & Dean, who will also perform on the tour. The celebrity line-up will be announced soon, together with the panel of rink-side Judges who will critique their performances. At each performance the audience will have a chance to vote for their favourite skating celebrity. Replicating the format of the hit ITV1 show, they will be able to use their mobile phone to text vote for their favourite dancing couple.
The audience votes will then be added to the scores from the Judges to decide the winner. Once the votes have been counted, the winning celebrity will join their skating partner to perform a magical finale. As with the previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity, more than £80,000 has been raised to date. The fifth series of Dancing on Ice starts on ITV1 in January next year. Tis the season to be not so jolly as the story audiences know far too well of Scrooge and his encounters with Christmas past, present and future. However the dramatization by the Northern Ballet Theatre was anything but un-joyful. The company has had ‘an incredible journey over the past forty years’ according to their artistic director, and return to their most popular production of A Christmas Carol and their unique combination of dance and drama at the Sheffield Lyceum Theatre. This production offers an evening for all ages as the company incorporates traditional ballet into the fairytale and showcases a medley of familiar carols that are backed with music by the Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra. Besides the movement and melodies, the ‘wow’ factors lie within the costume design as Lez Brotherston’s ghosts of past, present and future captivate the audience as they elegantly pirouette along stage during the solo’s that introduce them into the three acts. One cannot praise Brotherston enough as the sinister theme and set design support the ballet movement that mesmerise
the audience. It’s a wonder how the cast move so swiftly in their stunning but heavily ‘fabricated’ costume. The main man Darren Goldsmith, performed a splendid impersonation of Scrooge, showcasing his dancing abilities towards the end of Act 3 when Scrooge turns over a new leaf. Choreographer, Massimo Moricone should be credited not only for the artistic movement but his ability to tell and portray the story while doing so. Definitely a captivating must see this Christmas. ELECTRIC NUMAN! We got two big music icons making their way into Sheffield this week starting with Gary Numan. Gary Numan’s classic, influential album, The Pleasure Principle is being re-released as a double CD edition (featuring demos and B-sides on the bonus disc) 30 years after it debuted at Number 1 in the UK charts. The singer’s single from the album, ‘Cars’ also climbed to the top of the charts, an achievement he’s celebrating with a 16-date UK tour starting in mid November. The Pleasure Principle was the point where Numan became a huge international solo star, reaching the Top 10 in the States with ‘Cars’ and Top 20 with the album. Given the conservative nature of the music scene in America at that time and the fact that the LP didn’t even feature any guitars, let alone conventional song structures (‘Cars’ doesn’t even have a chorus), this is one of those special moments in pop music when a new idea breaks through all the boundaries. The Pleasure Principle pioneered electronic pop music on a new scale, becoming a much bigger hit world-wide than Kraftwerk or anything from the Bowie/Eno ‘Berlin’ trilogy. and the fact that it was so different and had such a major impact in America (crystallised when Numan performed ‘Cars’ and ‘Praying To The Aliens’ in front of 40 million people on the Saturday Night Live Show) means that there’s a direct link from The Pleasure Principle to the new musical forms that were born in the USA over the next decade - namely hip hop, industrial and techno. Numan will be playing at the Corporation on the 20th.
DIO2 The Second of our music icons Ronnie James Dio brings his band to Sheffield this week, including Doug Aldrich (guitar), Rudy Sarzo (bass), Simon Wright (drums) and Scott Warren (keyboards). The grand wizard of classic rock. A poet of hope for the downtrodden. The single most important vocal technician in the history of heavy metal. All of these accolades have been garlanded upon the royal roar known as Ronnie James Dio. Born in New Hampshire, USA, Ronnie first achieved recognition singing with his own band Elf. Deep Purple’s Roger Glover and Ian Paice spotted him in 1972, and Elf then supported the British band on several US tours. Ronnie later sang on Roger’s famed solo project “The Butterfly Ball” in 1974 and then joined Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. With his pioneering classical metal work in Rainbow, as well as his vocal pyrotechnics on two Black Sabbath monoliths (Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules), Ronnie used word and rhythm to seduce his way into the centre ring during metal’s thriving heyday. His first solo offering, Holy Diver, was a brilliant display of melody and might that married Ronnie’s immense vocal, lyrical and compositional acumen. Dio is indeed a vital artist, still making records with new collaborators and new sounds. Catch the great man live at the O2 Academy on the 22nd.

MOMERATH’S TAKE ON THE BEAR Hailing from the dark and dingy slums of Kingston Upon Thames, The Momeraths bring you the latest wonky dubstep beats that will keep you dancing all night long. Not really… Claire, Paolo, Richard, Michael and Adnan make pop music and catchy pop music at that. The sort of music that puts a smile on your face on a winters day, or makes you tap your foot on a packed tube. When the Momeraths play their infectious form of fun, guitar driven pop music in a live arena, their music suddenly it takes another twist. The band are incredibly tight and have forged unique percussive instruments from everyday inanimate objects, such as bar stalls and ironing boards. The band met at university, where all night music sessions got the creative juices flowing. Music by Neil Young, The Beach Boys and The Band would echo around their student halls until late into the night. Every now and again, they would leave their habitat and venture out into the big wide world. In fact, they often frequented Kingston’s infamous “New Slang” night, where they watched wonderful indie bands such as, Young Knives, Good Shoes, Jack Penate and Los Campasinos. In the Summer of 2008, after many nights spent in local haunts, the five friends became frustrated and decided that they could write superior music to bands touring at the time. Soon they wrote a few songs and started playing gigs. In Feb 2009, the band released their first record. The limited edition EP titled “Crayon Colours” sold out within one week of release in record shops such as Picadilly (Manchester), Rounder (Brighton) and Banquet (Kingston). To celebrate this, the band booked and played their first national tour. They brought forward this success, with a debut single released on New Slang records. “Millipede Stomps” received similar acclaim to “Crayon Colours” and was soon repressed due to selling out in a flash.Summer festivals soon followed, where they appeared on the Dirty Boots Stage at Glastonbury (twice) and made further appearances at Lounge On the Farm and Redfest. In October 2009, the band penned a deal with management company Hooked On Music. As a result of a small showcase in London and a follow up show at ITC, they also signed up industry giants 13 Artists (Artic Monkeys, Duffy, Radiohead) to take care of live bookings. October also gave the band their first Radio 1 airplay, as part of Huw Stephen’s ITC highlights show.With three singles planned in 2010, next year is looking great for The Momeraths. NOT ALL ELECTRO IS KRATZ! AutoKratz are a London based electronic duo comprising of David Cox and Russell Crank. They are signed to the French electronic label Kitsuné Music. After having released a string of well received singles plus remixes for the likes of La Roux, Alex Gopher, Fischerspooner and Underworld in 2008 they released their debut mini album, Down & Out In Paris & London. It received critical acclaim across a wide variety of publications including the NME. Their first full length Album Animal was released in June 2009 which also received favourable reviews from various publications including IDJ which gave it 10/10, Mixmag (Album of the month), Artrocker Clash Magazine and the Financial times. They are often cited as one of the most exciting new live bands in electronic music, which caught the eye of techno legends Underworld, who asked them to support them over two nights at Brixton Academy in November 2008 Since then they have supported The Prodigy in Tokyo and completed their first Australian tour as part of the Parklife festival alongside La Roux, Busy P, ATrak, Tiga and Crystal Castles. In October 2009 they embark upon a 6-week headline tour around Europe in support of their album. But catch them first live in Sheffield at the Leadmill on the 25th. Robyn Rihanna Fenty is the girls full name. But you’ll all know her as 1. Rihanna and probably 2. The girl all over the news who was beaten-up earlier this year by her then boyfriend who I wont even bother naming. It must be frustrating to be massively well known more for something bad that happened to you than your music. What that awful episode in her life will do is put a huge spotlight on this new single of hers. Great in one respect, because out of something terrible may come something good. But frustrating all the same I would think. So let’s concentrate on the music. This is her fourth album already in what seems like a very short (up to now) career. 12 million album sales and huge success in the States. She is known over here, but I think that fame will grow as her career hopefully does. This tune starts off with subtlety and has a cool intro. The lyrics are obvious if you look at the title, people are going to say that it’s about certain things that have happened but honestly this could be about any relationship out there. Everyone can identify with these words and this song oozes coolness. It swathes you in dangerous warmth and is all enveloping. A very good tune that stands on its own and I really hope that in the future she is only known for her music.
The lads from Ireland and Newcastle have been building up their profile rather nicely over the past few years. After getting good supports with likes of Whitesnake, Deep Purple and Paul Rodgers and being championed by artists such as Jimmy Page it was always looking likely that they could do well. After two albums their profile is still growing and now they attempt to keep that rock and blues train rolling. ‘Comfort Zone’ is as classic a sounding blues tune that you’re ever likely to hear. As the song develops and frontman Cormac Neeson lets his vocals let loose you can hear the amount of depth in his voice. He is a great blues vocalist and this band is becoming experts at this genre. This is a classy as you’re ever likely to hear! It’ll struggle (sadly) to do much damage to our charts, but that’s more of a problem with our charts than the problem with The Answer. If you love bluesy rock then check these guys out, they’re already at the top of their game and you won’t find anyone doing this style of music any better than these guys. A classic band, staples of all things ROCK! I love Living On A Prayer, Keep The Faith is probably up there in my Top Twenty Favourite Songs of All Time! The problem I have now with Jon Bon and his band are that quite a few years ago he found a solid Bon Jovi sound and he’s stuck to it rigidly ever since, way too rigidly for my taste. This song could be any of their last ten singles, the lyrics are almost identical to previous lesser hits in fact. They do massive shows all around the World with this kind of material so who can say they shouldn’t be doing it. Maybe Jon Bon is scared of changing a successful format. But really, the stuff is now so similar time and time again that it’s boring the pants of me.

At last, we have an ice-hockey win! As you may know Radio Nightingale have started to provide full commentary from the Sheffield Steelers home games this season. Generally at the Sheffield Arena but also this week at Ice Sheffield using our fantastic broadcasters mobile phone – which had thankfully dried out nicely after its exposure to the elements on Remembrance Sunday. Since we started the commentaries this season the Steelers have failed to win on every occasion that we have covered the games. But at last our jinx on their form is over as we were able to bring full game commentary of the Challenge Cup victory at Ice Sheffield on Saturday. Not only was it a win, it was something of a landslide with the final score of 6-1 against the Edinburgh Capitals plus a couple of dustups to boot. That result puts the Steelers into the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup which means we can add coverage of the clash
with Nottingham Panthers to our schedules. This week we received a donation of £200 from the Rotherham Floral Arts Society. Some months ago we provided a talk about Radio Nightingale to a ladies group meeting at which this years Chair of the Rotherham Floral Arts Society was present and she chose to nominate Radio Nightingale as her charity for the year. So this donation comes from the fundraising activities of the Floral Arts Society and we are extremely grateful for their work over the last 12 months which has generated this amount. A chance meeting on the wards this week generated an interview for Mel Jaques. Claire Ferguson of the British Red Cross was visiting the hospital promoting their Care in the Home Service in Rotherham. Mel invited Claire to share information about the fantastic volunteer led support scheme with listeners in his programme on Tuesday. The scheme is funded by
TESCO and in partnership with Age Concern Rotherham, and provides volunteers to assist patients in their first few weeks after discharge from hospital. It seems to have been the week for chance meetings as we bumped into an old acquaintance who had taken part in our live broadcasts from St Leonards Church in Dinnington. Michael asked why we hadn’t been this year, anyway it seems that it was something of crossed wires about who was to make the first move in organising something. So we’ve made a move and we’re back in conversation with the vicar at St Leonards and a service is in the pipeline for the New Year. dramatic late winner after Nicky Law struck in injury time to secure a 2-1 win for the Millers against 10 man Port Vale. Ronnie Moore made one change to the side, Paul Warne replaced Danny Harrison, with Law switching to central midfield. Drewe Broughton kept his place in the team, starting alongside Adam Le Fondre in attack. Broughton played a part in the Millers first attack within a minute collecting a Andy Nicholas throw and finding Le Fondre who laid off to Dale Tonge, but his shot from the right was deflected for a corner. Just two minutes later and Kevin Ellison also tried his luck from distance but his effort was narrowly wide after catching Lee Collins on the way through. Despite having the lion’s share of possession the Millers backline had to be alert. Andy Warrington rushing off his line when Nick Fenton’s header was short, and captain Ian Sharps intercepting a Adam Yates pass which would have put Marc Richards through on goal. Kris Taylor and Ellison both had efforts that sailed high and wide on 10 minutes. It turned out to be Ellison’s last piece of action as he was replaced by Stephen Brogan on 15 minutes after picking up a knock in a challenge with Lewis Haldane. The Millers first clear cut chance of the game came on 25 minutes. Substitute Brogan hit a searching free-kick from halfway that was headed down by Sharps, and Fenton’s resulting volley was well held by Chris Martin. Martin was on hand again just before the half-hour tipping over Le Fondre’s long range effort. The Vale ‘keeper was eventually beaten two minutes later, Tonge’s cross was attacked at the back post by Brogan who beat Broughton and two Vale defenders to the ball to head home his first league goal of the season and give the Millers a deserved lead. The lead lasted just five minutes however, as the home side worked a free-kick down the right before

post unmarked, and the big centrehalf headed past Warrington to level the scores. Controversy ensued late in the half as Fenton was brought down by Prosser as he tried to clear a corner. After a tussle which involved several players from either side, Fenton, Prosser and Richards all went into the book. Three minutes were added on and when Le Fondre was pulled back on halfway, the referee awarded a free-kick to the Millers and gave Prosser his second booking in a matter of minutes and reduced Port Vale to 10 men. The half-time whistle went to a chorus of boos from the home support. After an exciting finish to the first period, the chances began to dry up in the second half but it could have been a different story if Broughton or Fenton had got on the end of Brogan’s cross in the 55th minute. Rotherham were almost punished three minutes later as Nicholas misjudged a long ball through the middle allowing Richards in, and his effort was lifted over Warrington but drifted inches wide, silencing the premature cheers of the Vale fans. Sharps had a header blocked at the far post before Kris Taylor volleyed high and wide from a Richards knock-down. With 20 minutes remaining Law picked the ball up on halfway and beat two men before cutting back onto his right foot and curling just wide from the edge of the area. Tom Pope was introduced for Broughton and the Millers continued to press despite Vale’s resilience. With four minutes added on, Law burst into the area and cut back for Warne, but his side-footed shot didn’t trouble Martin as it sailed wide. It appeared that the Millers best chance had gone until deep into stoppage time when Warne slipped in Law whose left -footed shot beat Martin and gave Report: Ben Shepherd

Ronnie Moore felt that the Millers fully deserved their second consecutive away victory after a 2-1 win at Port Vale. Goals from Stephen Brogan and a late strike by Nicky Law secured the points and sent the Millers boss home a very happy manager. “I think it was totally deserved to be honest,” said Moore after the game. “Their goal was against the run of play after a sloppy piece of defending by us, and I think that was probably the only chance they had in the match. We were patient and we did the right things, it is never easy against 10 men as we showed against Notts County, and I must be honest and say that I didn’t think it was going to come but we probed and passed the ball and then finished well.” Moore switched Law from the wing into the centre of midfield and his move was vindicated when he netted after a strong run through the middle of the Vale defence. “I think it can work, I don’t think it was magical today but it definitely gives us something different,” commented Moore on the tactical switch. “He (Law) has got pace which is something that we have been lacking in there, he gave us that but we still need more from him. When he gets the ball he is such a talent, it’s untrue. He can waltz past people for fun and if he sticks to that position he is going to get a lot of goals.” The match turned sour at times and in the first half Vale defender Luke Prosser was given his marching orders after two bookable offences. “I don’t even know why he got sent off to be honest,” added Moore. “I said to our lads not to do anything stupid and I thought we did really well in the second half to not go into any stupid tackles. There was a lot going on, he could have sent more off. I thought that their number 10 just lost it; he told Warney that he will see him inside! You talk about trying to make things easier for referees, that was just stupid and we could do without it. Overall it is pleasing to get the win, that’s two on the trot now away from home but we have another hard game now at Torquay.”

STEELERS SECURE SEMI FINAL SPOT Last weekend the Steelers faced yet another “must-win” game, and came out on top as they twice beat the Edinburgh Capitals with Joey Talbot contributing a hat-trick and two assists over the two games. Technically all the Steelers had to do to get through to the Challenge Cup semi-finals was not lose on Saturday, but given previous weeks’ results that was no mean feat. However not only did the Steelers stuff the Capitals 6-1 on Saturday, on Sunday they traveled to Edinburgh and beat the Scottish side again. On Saturday the Capitals traveled to Ice Sheffield, where both sides held the score at 0-0 for most of the first period. The game started with a fight, as Brad Cruikshank dropped the gloves for a scrap with exSteeler Andrew Sharp just three seconds into the first period. Steelers’ Matt Hubbauer broke the stalemate at 18:02 and less than a minute later Jeff Legue added a second. Talbot started his scoring spree in the second period with two goals, his first in seven games. Rob Dowd scored shortly after, bringing the score to 5-0. Capitals’ Ben O’Connor, who has scored both of his goals so far this season in Sheffield against the Steelers, added Edinburgh’s only goal at 46:20, but there was no coming back for the visitors, and man of the match Joey Talbot completed his hat-trick at 49:25 as the Steelers won the game 6-1.
Sunday saw the Steelers take to the road and for the second time over the weekend Joey Talbot took a starring role in the Steelers’ success, this time it was Talbot who scored the winning penalty shot in the fifth round of sudden-death penalties. If it wasn’t for Kevin Bolibruck, however, the game would never have gotten that far, as he scored his first goal of the season to tie the score at 2-2 and took the game into overtime with just over two minutes left in the game. The Capitals had opened the scoring at Murrayfield with a powerplay goal from Owen Fussey within the first three minutes of the game, and it wasn’t until the second period that Jason Hewitt tied the scores, leaving him just one point away from the 100 career EIHL points landmark after collecting two assists on Saturday. Owen Fussey scored his second goal of the night to put the Caps ahead after tempers frayed and no less than eight players were handed penalties and Matt Hubbauer was thrown out with a five-plus-game penalty for slashing Jeff Hutchins - the man he replaced on the Steelers’ roster. Bolibruck tied the game. With no winner coming in the five minute overtime period, it took five

rounds of penalties before Joey Talbot found the back of the net and secured the Steelers’ second win of the weekend. Next weekend the Steelers play the Hull Stingrays at Ice Sheffield. Sheffield Wednesday striker Akpo Sodje has been loaned to Charlton Athletic for a month in a bid to play first team football and build match fitness. The 28-year-old has made nine first team appearances for the Owls this season - all from the substitutes bench - and manager, Brian Laws, feels the player will benefit from a loan switch to the League One club. Laws told swfc.co.uk “Akpo has struggled to get into the side this season and part of that is because we have had very few injuries to our strike force in the early part of the 2009/10 campaign so competition has been very strong. “We all know that Akpo can be a real threat when he is on top form and I think a loan move could get him back to his best. Akpo will be with Charlton until mid-December and then we will be able to review the situation ahead of the festive fixtures.” Second-placed Charlton host Milton Keynes Dons (third) at the Valley today (Saturday) and Sodje could be in Phil Parkinson’s matchday squad subject to paperwork being finalised. The London-born player will be the second Sodje brother on the Addicks’ squad list, joining defender Sam. He will also team up with former Owls team mate Deon Burton. Akpo’s 28-day loan is set to run until December 11.
Lewis Buxton insists he will play anywhere for the good of the team after impressing at centre half in the Owls’ last two games. The utility man formed an excellent partnership with Richard Hinds against Bristol City and QPR, handing manager Brian Laws plenty of food for thought moving forward. But Buxton, who has played chiefly in a right back berth this season, says he will slot into any position that Laws sees fit. He told Wednesday Player: “People have said that I have done well at centre half but I’m happy to play wherever I am picked. I do feel comfortable at centre half and if the manager wants me to play there, I am happy to do so. “When I first got into the side at Portsmouth I played there most of the time, but later on in my career at Stoke, I’ve just played at right back. My personal goal now is to play every week.” To that end, Buxton acknowledges that the added competition in the camp this season will give Laws the kind of headache that managers prefer. He added: “We have a few centre backs and Frank at right back, that’s always a good thing for the side. “The competition for places gives everyone that extra push and I think it gives the manager something to think about.”

BODEN RESERVES A VIEW BAG- FROM THE ATTENDS POST GIES POINT TERRACE OBESITY A Fan’s Weekly Verdict CENTRE OPENING Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Luke Boden has helped promote healthy living at the opening of a new obesity centre in South Yorkshire. Boden was on hand to meet staff and members of the public at the opening of the Rotherham Institute for Obesity (RIO), a specialist centre for the management of obesity. He said: “This is a brilliant facility. There are experts here who are trained to help people who are struggling with their weight and give advice on exercise and diet. “Obesity is a big problem in Sheffield and South Yorkshire and it’s great that the Rotherham Institute for Obesity is tackling the issue.” RIO, which has been commissioned by NHS Rotherham, offers services including a gym, cooking classes and a resource centre, providing support for overweight and obese people who have been referred by health professionals. It will also run schemes such as a summer weight management camp for children and 12-week weight management programmes for adults. Dr Matthew Capehorn, Clinic Manager at RIO, said: “This exciting new facility is totally unique in the UK. We are offering a full team of experts on hand to address the causes of obesity and offer weight management for both children and adults.” He added: “It was excellent to have Luke attend the launch as it is difficult to engage with children in terms of their weight, healthy eating, or healthy exercise. However, they do listen to their favourite sporting heroes, who are indeed their role models.”
Sheffield Wednesday reserves played out a 0-0 draw against high-flying West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Monday evening in the Totesport.com league. West Brom, who now go five games unbeaten, enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half and came close to scoring after five minutes. Paul Downing saw his first half header cleared off the line and a similar effort come back off the crossbar in the second period. Both sides came close to scoring after the break. Reuben Reid hit the woodwork ten minutes from time after Charlie Tunnard saw his shot also rattle the frame of the goal. Luke Boden went close for Wednesday with two minutes left on the clock as his angled drive was tipped over for a corner. In the absence of good old fashioned Football League action due to yet another international break, I thought I’d compile a ‘Wednesday World XI’ (in no way connected to the subscription website) of internationals that have played for the Owls. Ron Springett (England, 33 caps) First choice goalkeeper in the 1962 World Cup and back up to Gordon Banks in the legendary 1966 squad. A £10’000 signing from QPR that went on to make 384 appearances for Wednesday and is the only Owl to possess a World Cup winners medal….to date (one can only hope). Roland Nilsson (Sweden, 116 caps) And number 1 is Roland Nilsson……. Over 151 games for Wednesday (more than any of his other clubs) Nilsson was able to make the right-back berth one of glamour, sophistication and utter class.
Des Walker (England, 59 caps) A no nonsense and lightening quick defender was Mr. Reliable for Wednesday over 309 league and cup games (again, more than any other club on his CV). An early boyhood hero of mine despite a blatant snub in a Nottingham nightclub a few years ago… Viv Anderson (England, 30 caps) Anderson was the first black player to represent England in a full international. He will be best known by Wednesdayites as being an integral part of the early 90’s success despite being cup-tied for the 1991 League Cup Final Nigel Worthington (Northern Ireland, 66 caps) Worthington had a lot more exciting attributes than people often gave him credit for and was one of the first real wing-backs over 10 years at Hillsborough.

The Sheffield Wednesday under-18s have landed a home tie against league leaders Sunderland in the third round of the FA Youth Cup. The tie, to be played at Middlewood Road in early December, offers the young Owls a quickfire opportunity to banish the demons of a 6-0 thumping at the hands of Sunderland last Saturday. Academy manager Sean McAuley welcomed the draw whilst noting the tough task ahead. He said: “We’re looking forward to the challenge against a team that I believe are one of the best in the whole competition. “I give every respect to Sunderland because they play the game the way it should be played and they recruit players from their own region, which is not always an easy process. “We played them recently and witnessed first-hand what a good side they can be so this is a game that our players can really look forward to.”

Chris Waddle (England, 63 caps) Christopher Roland Waddle, scorer of the greatest goal ever in world history and, alas, architect of the most infamous penalty miss ever in world history. David Hirst (England, 3 caps) Although Hirsty’s Wednesday career is thoroughly celebrated it is an absolute tragedy that no England career materialised and I’ll put him in as reminder of that. Andrew Wilson (Scotland, 6 caps) Making his debut in 1900, Wilson went on to hold the record (which still stands today) of most appearances, 545, and most goals, 216, for the Owls. Like his strike partner, an international career never got going but I’d certainly like to see the pre-war and post-war goal machines get together

PADDY BOOST
Paddy Kenny’s future with Sheffield United has been secured with both parties having signed a one year extension to his current contract which expires next summer. The goalkeeper has been suspended by the FA since testing positive for taking a banned substance last season after purchasing an over the counter cough medicine. His hopes of winning a reduction in the nine month sentence were dashed when his appeal was rejected recently but Kevin McCabe announced on Thursday that a new deal was virtually done: “After discussions last week with Kevin Blackwell when the ban was re-affirmed after the appeal we have decided to talk to Paddy and get him on a new contract which will kickin as soon as his suspension finishes in April.
“Although he can’t train with the squad or at Bramall Lane owing to FA rules he has to ensure that he is up and running and training hard on his own to get ready for a real challenge on his return - all supporters know what a great goalkeeper he is and we have missed him.”
BLADES STADIUM PROPOSALS GET GO-AHEAD Proposals to further develop off-the-field income for a susSheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium were given the go-ahead this afternoon (2nd November). Councillors approved the Blades plans to extend the South Stand which are part of a continued long-term business strategy for the club. The decision is a further boost for Sheffield United’s support for Sheffield’s campaign to be a host city in a successful 2018 World Cup bid by England. The South Stand proposals see: • An additional tier of seating which with the proposed re-development of the Kop would increase overall ground capacity to approximately 44,000 • Purpose built exhibition and conference facilities within the stand, which will provide additional accommodation for the various community activities run by the Blades award-winning United Initiative team • New facilities for supporters, including corporate facilities • Additional commercial and banqueting facilities BladesPlayer subscribers can go to the website to see a 4 minute fly-through presentation. Executive director Jason Rockett said: “This is good news for Sheffield United and the city. Our focus remains firmly on achieving success on the pitch and the planned stadium developments will contribute to our continued long term strategy to drive
tainable business supporting further investment in the first team squad. “The next steps will be to firm up on design and delivery always ensuring we minimise potential disruption to supporters.” Strengthening the UEFA accredited ground’s position as one of the best in Yorkshire, the proposals have the added benefit of bringing the club in line with FIFA requirements at a time when it is supporting Sheffield’s bid to be host city in England’s application to stage the 2018 World Cup. Bramall Lane is already an international stadium, having successfully staged England under 21 fixtures. Earlier this year Sheffield United received the go-ahead from Sheffield City Council for the redevelopment of the Kop which will include additional seating, the removal of columns, a new concourse, new executive boxes, community and educational facilities, as well as improved services for disabled supporters to be built in the Evolution Corner Stand. On the back of a highly successful Blades Enterprise Centre, United want to build a second business enterprise centre between the Kop and the South Stand, providing an opportunity to companies that have outgrown the existing centre to expand and remain at Bramall Lane. The proposals for the South Stand were approved by the city centre, south and east planning board.

MCCABE WELSH ACTION FOR SLAMS BLADESMEN NEWSPAPER United’s Welsh duo Ched Evans and David Cotterill REPORT ON were both in action over the weekend as John Toshack’s WAGE BILL men inflicted a potentially devastating 3-0 defeat on George Burley’s Scotland at the Cardiff City Stadium. Evans started the game in attack alongside Reading’s Simon Church, before being replaced at half-time by Nottingham Forest striker Robert Earnshaw. Cotterill, on the other hand, was a late substitute after coming open for David Edwards, who had opened the scoring for the Welsh. WHITTINGHAM WINS OCTOBER AWARD Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham has been named Coca-Cola Championship Player of the Month for October. Whittingham has been in fantastic form through October netting seven goals in four league games. The Bluebirds forward opened his account with two goals over Watford early in the month, before securing City’s single point in a hard fought draw against Crystal Palace. Whittingham continued his scoring spell by stepping up to take a penalty against Coventry City, coolly slotting home the match winner. He rounded off an impressive month by bagging a hat-trick in a gutsy 3-4 away win at Bramall Lane in a win which moved the Bluebirds up to the second spot in the Coca-Cola Championship table. Also short-listed for the October award were Chris Weale of Leicester City, Adel Taarabt of Queens Park Rangers and Swansea City’s Alan Tate. Norwich City’s Grant Holt won the award in League 1 and Notts County’s Kasper Schmeichel was given the League 2 accolade. The decision to present the Coca-Cola Championship Player of the Month award was made by the Coca-Cola Player of the Month awards panel which includes former World Cup referee Jack Taylor, on behalf of The Football League, Steve Bates, Chairman of the Football Writers’ Association, Malcolm Clarke, Chairman of the Football Supporters’ Federation and Steve Watts, Marketing Assets Manager, Coca-Cola Great Britain.
Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe has issued a hard-hitting response to claims in a newspaper report concerning the club’s wage bill for players for next season. Mr McCabe was moved to make his statement just a short time after meeting with manager Kevin Blackwell to review opportunities to bring in new players in the January transfer window to strengthen the club’s push for promotion. “Figures in the report were inaccurate and way off the mark. There is a clear need to set the record straight once and for all in respect of the current and ongoing investment in the squad,” said Mr McCabe. “I have never set any budget for the wage bill going into next season and cannot believe under any circumstances it could be as low as £6m as was reported by one newspaper today. To put it bluntly - ‘dream on’. “Ironically, only this morning Kevin Blackwell and I have debated our proactive approach to bring in new players come January to ensure our promotion push is real.” “A substantial budget with realistic expectations has been made available to Kevin for players to strengthen the squad over the next eight months.” Mr McCabe went on to outline in detail the depth of the commitment to ensure United are competitive despite the loss of the Premier League parachute payment and the current tough credit crunch period. “This summer we paid the Championship’s top fee of £3m for Ched Evans who, outside of the relegated clubs, must be one of the highest paid players in the League. “Our wage bill for players is estimated as being the fourth highest in the division. Put that with the £4.5m investment in new players where we have paid for transfers (including Richard Cresswell who will be signed in the January transfer window), loan fees as well agents’ fees of £350,000 and it is clear that we are determined to provide Kevin with a platform to reach the Premier League. “The reality is that the squad when free of the current terrible run of injuries to key players is of strong quality and has the potential to get us promoted back to the top flight where all Blades want to be,” added Mr McCabe.

THE INTERNATIONAL BREAK In public houses throughout England this past weekend, the age old argument of club vs. country will have reared its persistent head. It is a debate that continues to divide football fans and understandably commands our attention most during the international break. For the vehement supporter of club football, it is the game’s daily presence living inside you, cyclically delighting and disappointing, that cements its mesmeric appeal. The devout international football fan thrives on the deep patriotic fervour that is attached to representing ones country and the intense desire to see our nation once again rule the world in football terms. For me the argument is a non starter. Club football is completely and unequivocally more important than international football. Your club is like your family, providing joy and frustration in equal measure, but always there, pervading your consciousness in every second of every day. The path that the English international game has taken over recent years has done a lot to alienate the salt of the earth supporter and despite England’s apparent revival under the stewardship of Fabio Capello, the international break still serves as something of a nuisance to the ardent club football fan. However taking this particular break in isolation, it may be seen as a blessing in disguise for Sheffield United Football Club. Our current injury problems have been much lamented, with at least half of the squad either out or being forced to do a job while only half fit. After Jamie Ward and Derek Geary made charismatic performances against Barnsley they have now had ten days to build their match fitness. Long term absentees Lee Williamson and Gary Naysmith also came through 90 minutes for the reserves in their battles to return to first team action providing some light at the end of this long tunnel we have been in. So thanks to the international break, the Blades may, just may be able to name a full substitutes bench for seemingly the first time this season.
