LAST MINUTE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Are you one of those people who always forget to do their Christmas shopping on time and then, rush here and there in panic? If so, you must read Crystal Peaks’ ultimate Christmas shopping tips. These tips will

ensure that last minute Christmas shopping is a breeze… Even though you are shopping at the last minute, it does not mean that you will or have to exceed your estimated and affordable budget. Just set an approximate limit as to how much

will you spend and try your hardest to stick to it. Since you are shopping at the last minute, you won’t be having much time for browsing through stores aimlessly. Ensure you compile a list of all the people you want to buy a gift for, along with the gifts that they would most probably like or want and head straight for the store in mind. Mission possible. It is better to first go to the large stores, which offer everything, right from shoes to clothing, under a single roof. You will be able to take care

of several presents at the same time. And stores like Wilkinsons and Next at Crystal Peaks’ Next are a good place to start. Try not to leave out the discount stores on your store list. At stores like Poundworld and Poundland you get extremely good deals there and save a lot of money, so definitely worth a look. A top tip for present buying, if you are planning on purchasing clothes for someone, it is better to have all the correct information regarding measurements and sizes.

A WELCOME ADDITION TO SHEFFIELD SCENE Over the least 12 months we’ve heard little of cheer in the Sheffield leisure scene and I was intrigued to see work beginning on a new and exciting venue for this city only a few months ago. The new ‘G. Casino’ is directly opposite the Mercury and we have watched the building works taking shape. Over £5 million pounds has gone into this superb venue and I have to say it’s a welcome show of confidence and also a great addition to the leisure scene. I was delighted to be invited

Open 24 hours a day from 7 December 2009, G Casino is a free entry venue of entertainment including secure free parking, a competitively priced cocktail bar and casual dining restaurant, casino gaming, live entertainment, state of the art slot machines and electronic gaming, live poker, a collect and spend points scheme, a free access membership card, exciting packages including learn to play, Christmas and New Years Eve events, not to mention a safe and controlled environment......indeed everything you need for a great value for money occasion ...... and open all day too!

The Lounge: The Lounge area is where customers can relax and enjoy a more casual dining experience from the bar menu. Regular sports will also be shown on the x plasma screens as well as regular live entertainment on the stage, all within The Lounge area. F&B: G Casino Sheffield will feature ‘The Gallery’ restaurant. With a seating capacity of 62, The Gallery serves a Mediterranean influenced menu specialising in Steaks, Pizzas and other contemporary dishes. In additional to the restaurant the casino will boast a contemporary bar area. Here customers can relax and enjoy a drink from the extensive menu of Beers, Wines and Cocktails or order a lighter bite from the Bar menu. Additional Facilities G Casino Sheffield will also run a customer loyalty system called ‘Play Points’. Points can be collected in each of the zones around the casino. The same system is run across 7 x G and Grosvenor Casinos and points can be earned or redeemed in any of these casinos. G casinos prides itself with having the ‘best in market’ loyalty system in terms of the number of points earned.

European city and ready to welcome visitors from all over the world. The layout, decor and lighting are superb and while the room is large it still maintains the intimacy that is necessary when relaxing in a casino. The bar area is beautifully designed and this adjoins a lounge area with a stage ideal for cabaret. Across from the gaming area is a restaurant and I was delighted to see a varied menu that was such good value for money. It would not have been a surprise to me had the prices been at least 20% higher for quality food in such prestigeous surroundings. If poker is your

game there is a welcoming and comfortable poker lounge where you can exersize your card skills. On a practical level there is a large car park and as the venue is on Queens Road is easily accessed from all parts of the city. The new G Casino is an exceptional venue and well worth a visit, in fact I would recommend you go, join and enjoy the restaurant, cabaret, bar area and if the mood takes you enjoy the adrenalin flutter you feel when taking your chances at the machines or tables. Sheffield has waited a while for a venue of this quality.

Car Parking G Casino Sheffield offers 175 complimentary parking spaces for its members. Full disabled access. Environmental Credentials G Casino Sheffield will feature LED lighting across 50% of the venue. This state of the art technology is the most energy efficient option on the market and has been installed to assist in reducing the Carbon Footprint of new G casinos.

A WEEKLY COLUMN WRITTEN BY INTERNATIONAL MEDIUM, AUTHOR & VISIONARY JOANNE GREGORY

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR Whatever you believe in Christmas still holds a special magic for many. Christmas is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is considered the Son of God, and the saviour of all people. With our world now being a melting pot of different cultures and beliefs this might not hold true for everyone. The concept of a man spreading peace, love and healing during his life, however, is a concept that we would all benefit from grasping. Better still if we implemented it in our own lives Though Christmas is normally celebrated on the 25th of December, strong evidence suggests that Jesus may have in fact been born in the spring. Though many Christians date Christ’s birth as the end of the “Before Christ” or BC era, most believe Christ’s birth can actually be dated to 4 BC. Sextus Julius Africanus, a third century Christian missionary, is believed to have first started the theory of Christ’s birth as December 25th. This worked well when the Romans later largely converted to Christianity because Christmas could be tied to pagan winter rituals, making it more palatable. Historical records suggest some forms of Christmas celebrations dating back to the early 4th century CE. I would imagine that there is more than just a little ‘Chinese whispers’ in affect with the story of Christ. Christmas celebrations become more elaborate every year and seem to start earlier. Some, however, argue that Christmas should not be celebrated as a feast date, because of the divine nature of Christ. This position is still held by some minority Christian groups like the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Though many modern Christmas traditions seem very ‘English’, England actually banned celebration of Christmas from 1647-1660 in an effort to free the holiday of what was viewed as its pagan trappings and the excess and corruption of the Ro-

man Catholic Church. This, however, was not a popular decision. England reinstated Christmas as a celebratory holiday, though tensions still ran high between the Anglican and the Roman Catholic Church. Charles Dickens must be mentioned as inspiring many of the traditions we now regularly practice as part of Christmas celebrations. His phenomenal classic The Christmas Carol published in 1843 pictured Christmas as a moderate, family oriented holiday, again, containing philosophies that would still serve us well today. Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” firmly embellished Christmas with Santa Claus. Actually many Christmas traditions are based in Germanic pagan rituals predating Christianity. Many consider Thor to be a frontrunner as an early Santa Claus figure, and the Christmas tree was once a sacrificial tree to the gods, hung brightly with dead animals. Today, some argue, Christmas has been corrupted by the commercialism with which it has come to be associated. For the poor, it may well be a time when, to quote Dickens, “want is keenly felt.” Dickens uses this as an argument for practicing charity and “keeping Christmas in our hearts” on every day of the year. So whether you buy into a Christian Christmas, a Dickensian one or your own version why not make yourself the epitome of what it all stands for this Christmas. Be benevolent and share what you have, be kind and make time for others, be loving and tell others how you feel about them and whenever you can have fun and spread joy. Merry Christmas to you all and may all your dreams come true!

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st A period of study is coming to a close and you’re a little sad as a result. The prospect of finding a practical use for your knowledge is a little daunting. Job opportunities are few and far between. Don’t beat yourself up for this turn of events. After all, it’s beyond your control. Be assured that your education will pay off over the next twelve months. Think about broadening your horizons with more than your usual amount of travel during the year ahead. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st A source of income will be cut off, forcing you to find another way to earn money. Unfortunately, the kind of work you enjoy will be elusive. You might have to take a tough job just for the sake of paying your bills. Try not to dwell on your disappointment. There is a silver lining to this cloud. If you’re single, you could meet the love of your life through a new employer in 2010. If you’re in a relationship, the benefits this job will bring will be significant. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd 2010 is the time to put an end to an image that no longer serves your interests. You’re tired of being the one everyone comes to for guidance. Pursuing your own star should be your first priority. If that means shaking off some overly dependent people, so be it. Establishing stronger boundaries between you and a romantic partner is very important. Stop letting them pass their responsibilities to you and start passing some of your chores onto them. LEO July 24th - August 23rd You long for privacy, but work demands keep crashing into your personal life. Instead of being the only person who knows how to perform certain share your knowledge and know how with others. That way, people won’t have to run to you whenever there is an emergency. It’s the only sensible course of action to take. Your New Year resolution must be to force yourself to delegate more and encourage the people around you to start taking charge of their own lives. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd Friends are impatient for you to join their ranks, but you’re just not ready yet. A budding romance, needy youngster or promising creative project commands every ounce of your attention. Some will accuse you of being selfish for neglecting loved ones this way but nobody realises how dependent they’ve become on you. Your nearest and dearest will have to learn how to take care of their own needs in 2010, instead of asking you to attend to them all the time.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd Career matters could come to a head in 2010. It may be necessary to decide between work and family. A once in a lifetime opportunity depends on your moving to a different location. Putting this much distance between you and your loved ones makes you nervous. Alternatively, you could be given a promotion that gives you next to no private time. If you feel like a youngster needs you, look for another job offer or you’ll never be able to appease your conscience. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd All the experience in the world has not prepared you for the challenges ahead. You just have to trust your instincts when it comes to dealing with a troubled relative or neighbour. It’s possible they resent you for having an easier childhood than they did. Maybe the difference in your incomes makes them angry. It’s even possible they have designs on your romantic partner. Whatever the reason for this animosity, you’ve got to address it in a direct fashion at the start of the year. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st Sexual hang ups are making you miserable. If you’ve had trouble maintaining a long term relationship, think about getting some counselling. Adopting a healthier attitude to life and love is critical to your happiness. In the past, someone may have made you feel undesirable because you didn’t make enough money and this may be contributing to your cynicism about romance. You can find the kind of love you’ve always wanted in the year that lies ahead. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th An intimate relationship needs to undergo some serious changes. For the past few weeks, you’ve devoted all of your energy to making your partner comfortable. The problem is, this person has taken all of your sacrifices for granted. You have to consider whether you want to stay committed to such a relationship. Set the tone for the coming year by putting your needs first. Head off to a spa or nature reserve where you can be pampered in January. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th Your mind, body and spirit are intimately connected. If you don’t feel well, it may be because you’re not emotionally fulfilled. Spending more time on pursuits that make you happy is essential. Steer clear of people whose religious or political beliefs are offensive to you. You’re tired of having to argue on behalf of the underdog all the time. Put your beliefs into action by volunteering for a humanitarian organisation and make the year ahead special for the people you help. PISCES February 20th - March 20th Recently, you’ve been neglecting friends, choosing to focus on a lover or youngster’s needs instead. Now you’ve got to rejoin your social circle. Of course, you may be met with mixed reviews. 2010 is a year for building bridges and strengthening ties so start the year by looking for ways to overcome difficulties with others. Once you start the process it will get easier and easier making the coming year a fruitful, positive and joyous time for you and everyone around you. There’s been a lot said about the failure of the X Factor Christmas release not getting to number 1. It would be difficult to find the words or space that expressed my personal delight at this. It’s not because I have any issues with the programme or Joe. Neither do I particularly favour the Rage Against the Machine however Shelter have benefited by £65000 which is no bad thing. I have to also concede that the X Factor has created income for CD producers and record shops and much needed advertising revenue for beleaguered ITV.

RED STRIPE MUSIC AWARD 2010

I find the programme essential viewing as it cannot be denied that it is well produced and generally entertaining. But that’s all it is a hyped, glitzy piece of plasticised eye candy. Now I come to the problem areas for me as someone who has spent 35 years in this business, worked hard, practiced hard and thankfully achieved some small success and still performing regularly. The X Factor, judges and performers have little to do with music and everything to do with branding, advertising and the generation of wealth for the few. My own

politics are middle ground and I appreciate the need for commercialism however for Mr Cowell to be described as a ‘music industry mogul’ or any other description with music attached to it is a deception. He can’t play, sing or dance so he is neither a musician or entertainer. I have strong views about this as the UK music industry is a shadow of what it was 40 years ago and it now under the control, largely, of Japanese and US based corporations motivated by share value and profit. From the early 60s and the advent of the Beatles till the

late 70s and the arrival of Punk British music dominated not only the US charts it dominated the world. Furthermore many of the bands and musicians that were around during this fantastic era are still selling CDs and performing to sell out gigs to this day. Records had to sell millions to go Gold or Platinum and everyone knew who was in the charts. Record companies relied on the imagination and inspiration of the musicians they signed and largely left them alone to come up with the goods. The result was that the UK was the centre of the world when

it came to popular music and try as they might the US only had limited success. I listened to a debate on radio the other day and a staggering truth came out of it. If The Beatles auditioned for the X Factor, had it exisited, they would have never been put through and this just about says it all about the damage that Simon Cowell has caused to something I care about. Had Cowell been around with his factory formula we may never had seen Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Genesis, Yes, Def Leppard,

Mike Oldfield, Joe Cocker, Led Zeppelin, Queen and the list goes on and on. Some of these took a year to make and album and they wrote tracks that lasted half and hour. They also sold millions and millions of albums but not because of a TV programme, branding or endorsement from a mobile phone company it was about the music. Thankfully while history remembers the greats of the music profession the man in black with the gleeming smile and daft haircut who sits in judgement of the mediocre will be forgotten. For me, the sooner the better.

Why are the British simply sitting back and doing nothing? It may also surprise you to know that we have secured the full support of CIU at National Executive level for they simply do not see why there should not be choice. Separate rooms and/or ventilation is a very simple solution to this problem. After all, many years ago, before the ‘yuppy’ brigade came on the scene, we had SNUGS where smokers could happily retire and leave non smokers in peace. Everyone was happy. In August, this year, we co-hosted a “Smokers Music Festival” at the Jolly Brewer Public House in Lincoln. The licensee (Emma) was sick to death of the dearth of customers so put this idea forward to f2c. The pub has a large patio’d area at the rear and a covered stage area where

several local bands were invited to play. The event was only advertised locally and on ‘facebook’ (internet) yet amazingly 234 happy souls availed themselves of a most fantastic night of smoking, drinking & entertainment – and 6 of them were non smokers happily mingling! Here is the most amazing thing: not one single smoker walked into the pub to replenish their drink with cigarette in hand! Every single person respected this idiotic law. Emma has vowed to repeat this night again in 2010 and we look forward to supporting her excellent initiative. Considering that her usual ‘crowd’ amounted to 6 or 7 souls this proved beyond doubt that pubs need smokers. If any pubs/clubs in the “Mercury Area” feel they would like to do the same please do not hesitate to get in touch with me on 07773-926818 and we will be only too happy to help you out with a “Smokers Music Festival”.

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, “Everyone who thinks they’re stupid, stand up!” After a few seconds, Little Davie stood up. The teacher said, “Do you think you’re stupid, Little Davie?” “No, miss, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!” Lesser-Known Facts: Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. He who laughs last, thinks slowest. Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there’s a 90% probability you’ll get it wrong.

Regular readers of this column will know that in my opinion, women should not be allowed to drive on the roads. It was a softening in attitude that I made a condescending suggestion that they should all drive pink cars so that we all knew when they were coming. However, last Sunday morning, I discovered the ultimate terror, a woman driving in snow. To explain, the missus and I had attended a fabulous party, with loads of food and drink together with entertainment from Junkyard Dog and The Score, on the previous evening. As I have never been someone who would drive after a drink, I left my car in a field adjacent to the party house which was at the end of a private road which was about half a mile long. Road conditions were treacherous on the way there and so I was full of trepidation when we went to pick my car up the following lunchtime. I went carefully and anticipated no problems until the last fifty yards which was on a hilly part. Lo and behold, I encountered a car twenty yards from the end which was sideways on the road making it impossible to pass on either side. Sounding my horn brought no response and so I went to investigate. Behind the wheel was a young lady I had seen at the party and she was in a bit of a panic, explaining that her car would no longer go forward and was slipping backwards. I used my manly knowledge to resolve the situation and got the

poor girl on her way. The moral to this story is that if you don’t know how to drive in snow, get a taxi. Better still ladies, do the decent thing and surrender your licences. As this is the last column before Christmas, I would like you all to spend a few minutes remembering those in the entertainment industry who have passed away in the last twenty years. Of course the most recent loss was the wonderful Dave Kilner, a star in every way who succumbed this year after being ill for a while. Others I would like to pay tribute to are, in no particular order, as follows:- Potty Pete Hayward ,Steve Denton, Dave Green, Barrie Glynn, Chuck Fowler, Tony Capstick, Dave Hawley, and Paul Symons. My apologies if there are any omissions, which I am sure there will be from this exalted list. It is now six weeks since my last cigarette and I am fairly confident of continued success. My heart does go out though to the addicts who are suffering freezing conditions having to satisfy their craving outside pubs, many of which have not provided the necessary shelter. As a result of being caught on a speed camera, I have managed to avoid the obligatory points and fine by agreeing to attend a speed awareness course. This is a brilliant initiative from South Yorkshire Police, who in certain cases, dependant presumably on the speed involved and previous motoring history; consider edu-

cation as a realistic alternative to punishment. However, I have not got away totally Scot free, as the course commences at the unearthly time of 8.00 a.m. and the fee is seventy pounds. I will give more information about this once I have attended the course Last Wednesday evening, the missus and I attended, courtesy of Mercury proprietor David Hayes, a dinner with guest speaker Ricky Hatton. This is the third time I have attended functions with Ricky and I have to report that he is a born comedian and would have great success were he to make this his next career. I was pleased to receive a call from a lady pensioner enquiring where she could obtain Jackie Toaduff’s autobiography, Coaldust to Stardust. Having pointed her in the right direction, she informed me that my column was the first thing she read and how much she enjoyed reading it. She is obviously a lady of some taste. May I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a merry Christmas and a happy, and prosperous, (once we get a change of government in the spring) New Year. God Bless you all Editors note: I’d like to thank Howard for his column which I always look forward to receiving. His spelling and grammar are a delight and the content, although sometimes a little dubious, is always entertaining

GARY NUMAN MERCURY EXCLUSIVE Interviewed by D’lear and Presley We tracked down the legend that is Gary Numan, as he relaxed at his beautiful home deep in the Sussex countryside last Sunday evening.

Drag. Hi Gary, thank you for talking to Drag at The Mercury. The last time we mentioned your name on our music page was when you made a guest appearance at the Nine Inch Nails gig at London’s 02. How did that come about and did you enjoy it? The response you got from the NIN crowd was huge! Gary. It was down to my wife Gemma actually. We knew NIN were playing a song of mine called ‘Metal’ on their final UK tour so Gemma, unknown to me at the time, e-mailed Trent (lead singer) and asked if he was up for the idea of me singing it with him when the tour came to London. He got back to us straight away and he then asked if I was up for doing ‘Cars’ as well. I wasn’t sure that the NIN fans would be too happy with having two Numan songs played to them, especially with me singing instead of Trent but, much to my surprise, the crowd went ballistic when I was introduced and so I had a great time. I’d been quite

nervous leading up to it but Trent and the band and crew were extremely welcoming and made me feel very much at home.

Drag. You then did the NIN farewell shows in LA shortly after with other special guests, how did that go? Plus do Trent Reznor and yourself plan to work together in the future? Gary. The LA shows were amazing. Trent had some throat problems after the first show and so the final three were rearranged. Luckily I was able to extend my time there and sing at all four shows. Again, I was sure that the crowd wouldn’t go for so much Numan material being played and with me doing so much singing but they did. On most of the nights Trent was playing three of my songs, sometimes two different versions of one of them and then he asked me to sing a cover version of the Gang Of Four song ‘Anthrax’ so I was on stage for about 20 minutes or so. It was an amazing experience to be on stage with one of the greatest bands ever, at their final shows ever. Amazing and sad to be honest. I felt honoured to be asked, honoured to be there on stage with such amazing musicians. We have discussed doing some stuff together next year, I hope so, it’d be really cool. Drag. You’ve been recently filming a video for your next single called ‘The Fall’ in a mental asylum? Can you give us any details and when it may be released? Gary. Not sure. I’m working on two

albums worth of stuff at the moment, one called ‘Dead Son Rising’ and the other one called ‘Splinter’, and we are yet to decide what album ‘The Fall’ song will go on, or when these albums will be released. Hopefully ‘The Fall’ will come out in the spring 2010 and ‘Splinter’ soon after. The other album will also come out next year in some form or another but ‘Splinter’ is my main focus. I don’t put out singles very often as it’s impossible to get music played on national radio unless it fits neatly into that light weight, radio friendly style that has been slowly killing alternative music for the last decade or two. For me the point of a single these days is to let the fans know what direction the new material is going in and to start to generate interest in the album and, most importantly, the tour that will go with it. It’s about feeding the faithful and creating new interest where possible, not about getting into the chart, although that would be nice of course. Oh and the mental asylum, ha-ha. It’s this really old disused building in Lincolnshire, it looks great for the feel we’re after and I think it’ll make the video look quiet threatening. It’s really terrifying in there, there are bits of old iron beds and restraints left around. All of us made sure we got out of there before night set in.

Gary. I was shocked. I hadn’t really been looking forward to The Pleasure Principle Tour as I’m not a big fan of playing a lot of old songs but a few things made it a lot more enjoyable than I’d expected. First of all the old songs didn’t sound as weak and dated as I’d thought they would, in fact they sounded quite powerful and quirky, and I’m okay with quirky. Secondly, as you say, the second half of the show was predominantly new material and that was getting every bit as good a reaction, if not better, than the Pleasure Principle stuff. Pleasure Principle was a massive Number 1 album and this tour was to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that Number 1 and so I’d expected the crowd to walk out as soon as those songs were finished. To have the second ‘industrial’ half go down even better was a massive boost for me. And, strangely, it made me proud of the earlier songs as well as they became a quality point of

reference for what was to come later in the show, where we were able to show how things had evolved and grown from those earlier days. Drag. You recently did a BBC Live Session at Maida Vale with upcoming electro-bird Little Boots, what songs did you do and when and where can people see it? Gary. I played songs called ‘Metal’, ‘The Fall’ and ‘Haunted’. Little Boots did three of her songs and then we duetted on my song ‘Are Friends Electric’ with my band, switching to Little Boots band for a duet of her song ‘Stuck On Repeat’ and then the Lou Reed classic ‘Venus In Furs’. I believe that the BBC 6 Music web site has details of when the session will be broadcast. It was also filmed and can, apparently, be seen using the Red Button system on the BBC in the near future. Again,

all details are on the BBC web site. Drag. Thankyou Gary for exclusively talking to Drag at The Mercury and we’ll hopefully see you playing live again in Sheffield soon. Gary. My pleasure, thankyou and I’ll definitely be playing there sometime in 2010.

You can catch Gary’s BBC Session with Little Boots on the BBC’s Interactive Red Button from 29th January for one week. Gary’s Pleasure Principle 2009 Show will be released on DVD sometime in 2010. To keep up with all things Numan go to www. numan.co.uk and/or www. myspace.com/garynuman

Drag. On your recent sell-out Pleasure Principle Tour, mostly the second half of the set is your later industrial stuff, which seemed to be getting an even bigger response from the audience than your classic million seller material. That must be really gratifying?

SEASONS’ GREETINGS TO ALL EXTRA CASH FOR PENSIONERS IN SHEFFIELD

Make sure you don’t miss out. In the City of Sheffield alone, 38,000 people are receiving extra income from Pension Credit and help with Council Tax, housing costs and fuel bills; but there are still many more of you who have not yet applied for the extra cash available. People getting Pension Credit now receive, on average, about £50 a week, but thousands of households are going without this extra money. Pension Credit means that people aged 60 and over need not live on less than £130 a week (or £198 a week for couples). And there’s good news for people with savings. Since November 2009, you can now have up to £10,000 in savings without it affecting your Pension Credit. The Department for Work and Pensions is working hard to help people to claim what they’re entitled to. In January, DWP

Have you considered the importance of a Living Will? Modern technology has enabled healthcare providers to maintain life far beyond limits of the past, but many people prefer not to utilize that technology. In most cases, if there are no directions to the contrary then life-sustaining measures will be used. A Living Will may be called various other names, most commonly the Advance Directive. What is a Living Will? A living will is a legal document that specifies what life-sustaining treatments you do or do not wish to have used if you are unable to make decisions for yourself. ANDY PENS NEW DEAL

All our Staff wish a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE WEEK 17

It’s been a busy long-weekend at Radio Nightingale this week, starting on Friday evening with Ice Hockey commentary. Although this almost didn’t manage to make it to air, the Sheffield Arena had not quite got everything back to normal after hosting another event. But with a couple of extension wires through windows, we were able to join the game missing only the first 10 minutes. During which time Newcastle Vipers had scored, but it was to be the Steelers night as they started what was to become a hat-trick of wins over the weekend with a final score of 6-3. Sunday saw an anniversary as we returned to record Carols by Candlelight marking one year since our first broadcast from the Rotherham Minster. The congregation who braved the arctic weather were treated to a wonderful performance from the Minster choir under the direction of Phillip Higgins. The recording will be broadcast to the patients on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Monday, Mel was joined in

the studio by the Rotherham 31st Guides. The girls presented a cheque for £150 from their recent fundraising efforts before Lauren, Abigail, Grace, Harriet, Georgia, Nicole, Ellie and Hannah read out requests for the patients. There’s never a good time to be in hospital but Christmas has got to be one of the worst. So we’ll be doing our best to bring Christmas cheer to the wards with special programmes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There’ll be request programmes, plus Carols by Candlelight, another opportunity to hear the Schools Christmas Carol Concert and extra editions of Bookmark and The Sunny Side of the Street. If you know anyone who is in hospital over this time, we’d be delighted to receive your requests and dedications, so please give us a call or send an email.

Finally, we’d like to wish a very Merry Christmas to everyone who reads our column each week and to all at the Mercury Newspaper. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. Our photographers will be present at the game also, so make yourself known to them and you could feature on the website or in a future matchday programme. Rotherham United’s Mark Hitchens said: “It’s the ideal opportunity to dig those old Elvis wigs from the bottom of the wardrobe. THREE WINS IN THREE DAYS FOR SUCCESSFUL STEELERS Steelers fans left the Arena on Sunday in festive high spirits, after seeing the Steelers achieve their third win in three days this weekend. On Friday the Newcastle Vipers came to the Arena, for the first of two meetings between the teams this weekend. Steelers’ Head Coach Dave Matsos was back behind the Steelers bench, after Steelers fans got the news they were all hoping for this Christmas, that his young son George Matsos was home with his family for Christmas after spending time in a critical condition at the ICU at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for much of December. The visitors scored first with a goal at 7:03 from Mike Berry, but the Steelers quickly answered with two goals in just over a minute from Doug Sheppard and Robert Dowd. It was Dowd who opened the scoring in the second period, with a goal in the 24th minute. Vipers’ Matic Kralj scored at 26:31 to put the Vipers back into the competition, but any hopes they had were soon dashed as Randy Dagenais scored, followed at 33:01 by a goal from Brad Cruikshank to put the Steelers three goals ahead going into the third period. Kralj added his second goal of the night in the third period. Cruikshank’s second, an emptynetter with Kevin Reiter (for the Vipers) off the ice, the game was won but not over, as on the final buzzer Steelers’ Stephen Wood took a 5+game penalty for fighting, whilst Newcastle’s Dean Holland ended up with a 5

minute fighting penalty. On Saturday it was time for round two, this time in Newcastle, and the game got off to a fiery start, with six goals and 56 penalty minutes (including an ejection for Jason Hewitt in just the fifth minute) in the first period. The home side opened the scoring with a goal from Matic Kralj, and at 4:03 they doubled their lead as Mike Berry scored. Soon after the goal Steelers lost Jason Hewitt, who was ejected from the game with a 10+game penalty for abuse. Less than a minute later Matt Hubbauer, who would leave Newcastle with fewer teeth than he arrived with, after being high-sticked under his visor, scored for the visitors. Jeff Legue leveled the scores, and it was Legue again who put the Steelers ahead on the powerplay. Less than a minute later however, the Vipers pulled a goal back and leveled the scores once again at 3-3 going into the second period. Joey Talbot found the back of the net at 25:15 with another powerplay goal, and Rod Sarich and Hubbauer added their goals to give the Steelers a three goal lead. Matic Kralj added the last goal of the period for the Vipers, but it did little good as the Steelers went on to hold their lead through the third period and leave Newcastle with the points. The Steelers were back at home on Sunday, in front of a muchdepleted crowd thanks to the snowfall earlier in the day. Steelers took the lead in a first period which saw some decidedly dubious refereeing calls. Goals from

Joey Talbot and Jason Hewitt put the Steelers ahead, but the goals were not the biggest concern of the period. The first period also saw the Steelers lose Captain Jonathan Phillips not only for the remainder of the game, but for the team’s Boxing Day clash at the NIC in Nottingham, as he was ejected on a Match penalty for “excessive roughness” after retaliating and fighting Jay Latulippe after receiving a butt-ending from the Devils’ player. Matsos has been reported as saying that the Steelers will appeal the decision. The Devils lost Jay Latulippe in the same confrontation, with a 5+game for roughing/misconduct. Neither side scored during the second period, Jeff Legue scoring the next goal in the 47th minute to give the Steelers a 3-0 lead with a short-handed goal. It was then that the Steelers seemed to ease up, allowing the Cardiff side to score two quick goals, ex-Steeler Phil Hill at 56:10 and Mark Richardson adding the second at 58:21, but the Devils fans got their hopes up for nothing, and the Steelers held on for the win. The Steelers’ next game is the big Boxing Day clash in Nottingham vs the Nottingham Panthers. To get your tickets call the NIC box office on 0115 853 30 02. The two teams then return to the Sheffield Arena on the 27th for Round Two! Get your tickets from the Arena box office on 0114 256 56 56

less run continued on Saturday as high-flying Swansea left Hillsborough with all three points. A first half double from Darren Pratley did the damage, although it’s fair to say the scoreline flattered the Welsh side. The Owls bossed the lion’s share of play but just lacked the spark in the final third to unlock a resolute Swans backline. And they were duly made to pay as Paulo Sousa’s counterattacking tactics reaped full reward on a bitterly cold afternoon in S6. Wednesday, under the caretaker guidance of Sean McAuley following the departure of Brian Laws, fielded the same eleven that started the game at Leicester last week. The only changes to the squad were on the bench, where Francis Jeffers took the place of loanee Warren Feeney while Frank Simek came in for Michael Gray. The early exchanges were even, with neither side looking particularly threatening until Swansea stole into the lead in the fifth minute. Gorka Pintado swivelled in midfield and sent Pratley racing through the middle to clip neatly across Lee Grant and into the back of the back of the Leppings Lane net. The goal sparked the Owls into life and they twice came close to levelling inside a minute. First, Jermaine Johnson forced a flying save from Dorus De Vries, then Darren Purse’s header from the resulting corner again brought the best out of the Swans’ keeper. Marcus Tudgay was a whisker away from getting on the end of Tommy Spurr’s cross from the left as Wednesday

the visitors looked relatively comfortable in soaking up the Owls’ pressure. Then ten minutes before the interval - and totally against the run of play - Swansea struck their second following a rare foray into the Owls’ half. Andrea Orlandi fed Nathan Dyer down the left channel with a clever pass and Pratley was on hand to apply the finishing touch from the winger’s low feed across the area. The Owls introduced Jeffers for Sean McAllister at the start of the second period and the pattern of the first half continued - plenty of patient approach play by Wednesday but little in terms of end product. Skipper Purse almost glanced a near-post header past De Vries but fell short on the connection and that chance just past the hour pretty much summed up the Owls’ fortunes. Luke Varney came in for Johnson with 20 minutes to go as Wednesday went for broke and Jeffers stabbed a low shot goalwards that was bravely blocked by Swansea captain Alan Tate. But that was about as good as it got for the Owls, who huffed and puffed without reward while Swansea stood firm and did what they had to do cement their place in the top six. Caretaker manager, Sean McAuley, is sharing responsibility with his players for the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Swansea on Saturday. It was the Swans first win ever at Hillsborough and despite endeavour and commitment shown by the Owls in the first half, two goals before half time from Darren Pratley secured the victory for the visitors. “I am a really positive person and a positive coach,” McAuley said. “I believe just about anything can be achieved if everybody is playing to their potential. I think the ability levels of our squad are good but at this moment in time they are not playing to their ability levels and they are not pushing the boundaries of their ability to show what potential they have got and that’s because there is a fear. “Before the game I said I would make changes but those changes were meant to be about the performance rather than the personnel. I thought we were nervy in the first five minutes but then got in amongst them and had set plays and chances. We played with good enthusiasm and after Swansea scored their first goal I thought it lifted the pressure off our team a bit and they went again. At 2-0 though Swansea played very well and made life difficult for us. “Fielding the same team that started last week was a bit of forward planning because we always have to plan for the ‘what ifs’. We are now in a ‘what if?’ situation so if I had made changes to start with and it hadn’t worked then had to bring players back into the team then it would have been messy. It was also important to forward plan for

ISSUE 828

the next game and I need to give everybody an opportunity.” McAuley was pleased with the effort and work rate shown by his team in the first half but conceded the heart shown in their performance may have led them not to play with their heads as he would have liked. “I can take responsibility for setting the tone in the first half because maybe that left us susceptible at the back to the counter attack,” McAuley commented. “Sometimes previously our players have been criticised heavily and it’s our responsibility as staff, as well as players, to take responsibility so I think we will share it. Hopefully that then leads us into getting the players into a better position than they are now.” Looking ahead, McAuley is hopeful that the team can turn their fortunes around against Newcastle on Boxing Day. “I will tell the truth to the players but I can’t batter them with a stick and the Newcastle game can take care of itself because of the atmosphere we expect at the game. There will be thousands of Newcastle supporters, it will be live on television, and I expect our supporters to feed off the atmosphere and get behind the team - that should spur anybody on,” McAuley said. “We have won four games all season but I think we are a better team than that. Frankie Simek has not played much all season and if we need him for the rest of the season then he needs playing time now. So does Franny Jeffers and everybody else because every man in the squad will be required and that is the position we are in. “There will be no panic but there will be no dressing the situation up to be something that it isn’t; we have 24 games of the season left and we probably need at least ten wins and four draws from those games.”

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE Written by Bunsen Bob

So this is what that creek looks like when you haven’t got a paddle. It is my sad duty to report that, at this moment in time, the players look totally void of ideas, passion and competence. The instinctive knack of knowing what to do and when to do it has gone, the body language when a goal is conceded can almost be classed as simply expectant and a goal looks as elusive as brain cells do in a Hillsborough concession stand. Disappointingly, the same line up was named by McAuley who has nothing to lose by stamping his authority on team selection. Hopefully, this was a final chance for the underperformers (who are now too numerous to mention) to make amends for recent shortcomings (which are also too numerous to mention) and a real shake up is due for the next game. The fixture overlords who insist on churning out horrifically average cup draws for us have also given us the runaway leaders of the league when we are at our lowest ebb. Newcastle roll into town carrying with them not only good form, but formidable form. That said, will the increased atmosphere that they will undoubtedly bring be the catalyst for the start of the Wednesday revival? To be honest I doubt it, but if we do get something from this game then it may go down as the most important December 26th since a certain game back in 1979. We will fight forever more and I do you know why? Because of Boxing Day. Merry Christmas to all Mercury readers.

FOOTBALL - BLADES NEWS - Articles copyright of www.sufc.co.uk

ISSUE 829

SEVEN GAMES UNBEATEN CHAIRMAN REID JOINS A VIEW AS BLADES EARN POINT ON BLADES FERENCVAROS FROM THE United’s unbeaten run was stretched to seven games with a hard-earned point in freezing London conditions in the final game before Christmas. Both goals came in an entertaining opening ten minutes as ex-Blade Mikele Leigertwood gave QPR the lead only for Richard Cresswell to level soon after. The game was Paul Hart’s first game in charge of Rangers and was an interesting appetiser ahead of the FA Cup third round tie between the teams in early January. Due to injury and illness, Blackwell made three changes, bringing in Kallio, Montgomery and Stewart for Williamson, Taylor and Evans, although the latter was deemed fit enough to take a place on the bench. The personnel suggested a switch to a 4-5-1 formation with Cresswell as the sole frontman and that proved to be the case. There was a frantic start and United, on the back of three consecutive clean sheets, found themselves behind before two minutes had elapsed. Kallio was forced to concede a corner to stop Simpson and after Watson’s delivery was cleared by Morgan, LEIGERTWOOD picked up the loose ball before drilling a 25-yard shot which was deflected into Bunn’s bottom left corner. It stunned the Blades fans arriving behind Bunn’s goal and Kilgallon had to time a tackle to prevent Simpson adding a second. The Sheffield contingent, however, were warmed by a leveller - it was on eight minutes and was United’s first attack. Rangers had three players close by one of their defensive corner flags but Watson managed to surrender possession and Kallio raced on to the loose ball before firing into the danger area for CRESSWELL to bundle home at the near post. A spell of end-to-end, entertaining action followed before the half hour mark but only presented two changes for the home side. From a short Watson corner, Taarabt’s turn and shot failed to find the target and then Bunn gathered the ball at the feet of Routledge when the winger looked set to go around the goalkeeper. After the initial blitz, United’s system was beginning to frustrate the home side and it was the visitors who looked the more like to claim the third goal of the game as halftime approached. Quinn shot just wide after Montgomery had robbed Taarabt and then QPR’s Stewart was booked for stopping Ward in what was an obvious physical mismatch. United’s Stewart, faced with a difficult chance, could only shoot at Cerny and a Quinn effort, following Kallio’s pass, was blocked when it looked to be heading towards goal. On the stroke of the break, Quinn and Ward combined to work a chance down the right but the latter dragged his leftfoot volley wide of the target. The start of the second period was somewhat scrappy with both sides struggling to hold on to possession long enough to create worthwhile chances. The opportunities that did present themselves, though, fell to the home side in the first 15 minutes after the interval. Montgomery was tempted into

Page 35

a foul on Taarabt in a central position right on the edge of the penalty area but fortunately, the Moroccan, on loan from Tottenham, could only fire his free-kick into the wall. On 59 minutes Agyemang ran at the Blades defence and his cross was perfect for a volley but Simpson sliced his effort well wide. Three sides of Loftus Road appealed for a penalty on 65 minutes when, following a spell of the ball pinging around the Blades box, Simpson went down under a Morgan tackle but referee Swarbrick was unconvinced and another run from Taarabt came to nothing. As in the first half, United came back into the game and began to force the home side back, beginning with a good chance on 67 minutes. Walker and Quinn combined on the right and the latter’s pull back resulted in Harper sidefooting over the angle of post and crossbar. Quinn, the further forward of the three central midfielders, was heavily involved in the attacking intent of the Blades and twice he failed to find the target with very difficult shooting chances. As the final, nervy 15 minutes approached QPR were again appealing for a penalty when Gorkss claimed he was pulled back by Kilgallon as Watson’s corner flashed across the box and then Vine was allowed time to shoot for home from 25 yards but Bunn was well placed to gather. Another Rangers corner was cleared as far as Leigertwood in the final five minutes but, thankfully, the former United midfielder was unable to repeat his crisp strike that gave the home side the early lead. After denying Rangers two penalties, referee Swarbrick did hand the home side a soft free-kick with a minute to go when Morgan was adjudged to have impeded Agyemang. To add insult to injury the United skipper was booked. Fortunately, Watson’s free-kick was deflected wide and the Blades cleared the resulting corner. QPR were on the offensive in the closing stages, and the three additional minutes, whilst the home side went mightily close to winning it. Two of three injury-time minutes had elapsed when Routledge’s cross was headed against the top of the crossbar by Watson. Bunn was in no hurry to restart the action and was booked for delaying but it was worth it as it was confirmed moments later that the Blades had secured a hard-earned point in the capital. QPR: Cerny, Ramage, Stewart, Leigertwood, Routledge, Agyemang, Gorkss, Watson, Williams, Simpson (Vine 68), Taarabt. Unused: Hall, Pellicori, Faurlin, Balanta, Taylor, Parker. Blades: Bunn, Montgomery, Morgan, Kilgallon, Harper, Cresswell, Ward, Stewart, Quinn, Kallio, Walker. Unused: France, Evans, Reid, Bennett, Little, Geary, Camara.

ISSUES

Chairman Kevin McCabe, following the formal business of last Friday’s AGM, answered questions from the audience and media about several issues connected with the Club. Here is a brief synopsis of what his reactions were: On Sheffield Eagles “It is a trial period so we will see how it goes from there. I don’t see why the stadium can’t be used for other sports, and if rugby league doesn’t interfere with the playing surface, or affects the football, then we can do it. “Looking ahead, there’s the rugby league World Cup in 2013 and there is a possibility that Bramall Lane could be considered.” On investment “We are still in the process of looking to find partners who follow our vision for the future of the club and recognise the business model we have created, so the search continues. “I’d like to think something can happen but my reservation is that we are in a crazy world at the moment where a recession has hit. That makes it more difficult than if it was normal circumstances, although I am optimistic.” On the money from West Ham “It is all agreed and the initial amount was all set out with West Ham’s backing.” On the transfer window “We are working hard to procure finance to accommodate the transfer window. The banks are in disarray so that is a dilemma affecting a number of clubs at present.” On the Academy “We are looking to re-shape the Academy, hopefully to get better performances in the years ahead. We have some excellent people in at Shirecliffe but, like anything, things need freshening up.”

Sheffield United academy director Ron Reid is to take up a senior football position with Ferencvaros - the Blades sister club in Hungary. He will join head coach Craig Short, the former United player, as senior coach and academy manager. Reid has been in charge of the footballing arm of United’s impressive Academy at Shirecliffe, which has seen many players graduate into the first team. Chairman Kevin McCabe said: “This is part of the re-shaping of our overseas operation which began a few weeks ago.” A striker with Chesterfield, York City and Boston United in his formative years, Ron moved into non-league to begin his managerial career and served both Worksop Town and Stafford Rangers with distinction. He was also handed the honour of managing England’s semi-professional team. Reid was one of the first men in the country to obtain the UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence and joined former team-mate Neil Warnock as assistant manager at both Bury and Oldham. Sheffield United will recruit a new academy director.

SHEFFIELD DERBY SWITCHED The Blades Championship fixture at Hillsborough has been put back one day to Sunday 18th April and will kick-off earlier than normal at 1pm. The decision has been made on police advice on safety grounds. United won the first encounter of the season at Bramall Lane which was a Friday night fixture live in SKY television back in September.

TERRACE

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

Football fans are a strange breed. Most of the country was panic buying bread and milk, stoking the fires and battening down the hatches in anticipation of a sub zero weekend. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of football fans up and down the country were instead preparing to brave the elements in following their club to all four corners of the UK. For Unitedites this meant a grueling trip to West London to see the Blades take on the Championship’s new self proclaimed ‘boutique’ football club Queens Park Rangers. And as the clock ticked past 11am while sat in a freezing cold broken down minibus at Tibshelf services, it did cross my mind whether this particular Saturday may have been one better spent glued to the radio, rather than frozen to the bonnet of a redundant vehicle. Even once replacement travel had been secured, the elements still conspired against us as a major crash on the M1 led to a further hour sat in a freezing immobile minibus. All this meant that at 3.02pm, we were dashing along the concourse of QPR’s away end just in time to hear a mass roar as former Blade Mikele Leigertwood put the hosts ahead. But once again, the grit and determination that has become synonymous with the United of late saw Richard Creswell quickly respond for the visitors with his second goal for the club. And what Sheffield United can do better than any team in this league is grind out a result, especially away from home. However the Blades will be hoping to go one better on Saturday and record a Boxing Day win that will see them jump above Leicester and back into a play off position. And if a positive home result against Preston follows, Sheffield United will be well set for a prosperous start to 2010. Congratulations must also go to our city rivals for potentially securing World Cup football in 2018. It’s just a shame they’re crippled by debt, managerless and languishing in the Championship’s relegation zone... So Blades, have a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
