UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 comes to sheffield Sheffield is one of nine cities chosen to host games for the UEFA Women’s Euro in 2022. With all 16 teams now confirmed for the sporting event, a major ticketing roadmap and legacy programme has been unveiled to illustrate how a record-breaking tournament that has the power to inspire the next generation of players and fans, will be delivered on home soil. Bramall Lane will welcome its first Group C fixture to coincide with Matchday 1 on Saturday 9 July 2022, which will be an opportunity to welcome the stadium’s first international women’s

match. The stadium will then host Matchdays 2 and 3 on Wednesday 13 and Sunday 17 July 2022 respectively ahead of its final fixture, which will be the first SemiFinal between the winners of the first and third QuarterFinals on Tuesday 26 July 2022. Next summer’s celebration of football sees tickets ranging from £5 to £50, with over half a million tickets available for £25 or less, ensuring the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 is an accessible event for all. The tournament will see a family of four [two adults and two children] able to watch some of the World’s best players from just £30.

The first chance supporters will have to apply for tickets is on 13 July 2021, via the Pre-Sale, presented by Visa. To ensure this priority access, fans can register their interest now at UEFA.com/ womenseuro/ticketing.

UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Legacy... Together with UEFA, as a nation and host a clear ambition is held to deliver the biggest women’s football event in UEFA history, which is used to inspire longterm, sustainable positive change in women’s and girls’ football. The nine Host Cities and 10 match venues

are all playing a vital role in establishing the continued growth of women’s and girls’ football in England and, as next summer gets closer, the Host Cities are also united in the ambition to provide a blueprint for future UEFA Women’s EURO tournaments. As part of their legacy Sheffield will engage with over 90% of primary and secondary schools to offer girls-only football opportunities by 2024, leading to double the number of recreational opportunities through Wildcats and Premier League Kicks programmes. In addition, a range of female-

only competitions across all ages will be launched. These pledges will lead to at least 140 primary schools engaged in Girls’ Football School Partnerships by 2024. Furthermore, 50% more girls aged 5-to-11-year-olds will have a recreational opportunity within five miles of their homes, and off the pitch, double the number of female coaches and female officials will be recruited to drive the game forward.

Find out more about how the tournament will help drive positive change within girls and women’s football at www.TheFA.com/ WEURO2022/legacy.

NEW LIVE EVENTS START TO BE ANNOUNCED AT SHEFFIELD CITY HALL! Toy Story In Concert

Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story” will be presented live in concert for the first time in the UK in 2022 with a nationwide tour that sees them performing at the Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 17 February 2022 – tickets are now on general sale. Toy Story in Concert will feature a screening of the groundbreaking complete film with Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Randy Newman’s musical score performed live to the film. The Toy Story films are beloved worldwide for their compelling characters, extraordinary storytelling,

stunning visuals and the music of Randy Newman. The composer and songwriter is behind signature songs including You’ve Got a Friend in Me, Strange Things and I Will Go Sailing No More. Ever wonder what toys do when people aren’t around? “Toy Story” answers that question with a fantastic fun-filled journey, viewed mostly through the eyes of two rival toys – Woody, the lanky, likable cowboy, and Buzz Lightyear, the fearless space ranger. Led by Woody, Andy’s toys live happily in his room until Andy’s birthday brings Buzz Lightyear onto the scene. Afraid of losing his place in Andy’s heart, Woody plots against Buzz. But when circumstances separate Buzz and Woody from their owner, the

comically-mismatched duo eventually learn to put aside their differences, and they find themselves on a hilarious adventure-filled mission where the only way they can survive is to form an uneasy alliance. Toy Story in Concert will feature a screening of the groundbreaking complete film with Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composer Randy Newman’s musical score performed live to the film by the Novello Orchestra, conducted by David Mahoney. Toy Story in Concert Thursday 17 Feb 2022 Tickets available from sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

mind charity shops call for volunteers

Mind’s 160 charity shops across England and Wales have raised an astonishing £1.5m in the first month since reopening their doors to customers – the best month ever in Mind’s retail history. The mental health charity is grateful to everyone in Yorkshire and the Humber for shopping and donating their pre-loved items, generating valuable funds. Mind is calling for further support, as shops in Yorkshire and the Humber urgently need volunteers to help sort, price and sell generous donations. These vital funds can’t come soon enough, as Mind announces a predicted £13m loss of retail generated income since the first lockdown. Simultaneously, Mind has seen a huge increase in demand for their trusted information and support services, of which Mind shops have always been a key source of funding. Last year, 20 million people accessed Minds online and print information - the highest on record, and there were 117k mental health queries responded to by the charity’s Information team via phone, email and webchat. Mind has previously warned of a ‘mental health pandemic’, after their survey of over 16,000 people found two in three (65 per cent) adults aged 25 and over, and three in four (75 per cent) people aged 13-24 with an existing mental health problem reported worse mental health during the initial lockdown. With increased demand on the charity, and decreased funds, shops in Yorkshire and the Humber need volunteers and donations now more than ever. Mind is urging those who can’t volunteer their time to donate their pre-loved items. After months of Mind shops being closed, and a sudden surge in sales since reopening, stock levels across shops are low. It was winter when Mind’s shops closed – with heavy coats still lining the rails – so clothing for the spring and summer months is particularly needed. The average bag of items donated to a Mind shop is worth around £30 – 25 per cent more if the donor signs up for Gift Aid. Andrew Vale, Managing Director of Mind Retail, said: “This record-breaking month is testament to the tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers and staff, as well as our generous donors and customers. Raising £1.5million in a month is incredible, and much-needed, to make up for the losses incurred by forced shop closures throughout the pandemic. Our wonderful staff and volunteers are doing incredible things – but they could do so much more with extra hands and donations. Due to the challenges of the pandemic, many volunteers have been unable to return – leaving shops struggling to cope. Volunteering doesn’t need to be a big time-consuming commitment – even just an hour a week could make a huge difference – and volunteers benefit from the opportunity to build their confidence, skills and gain qualifications. During a time when many have lost their jobs and support networks,

volunteering at a Mind shop in Yorkshire and the Humber is a great way to make new friends in the community, find a route back into work, or even start a new career path. Ongoing support from staff, volunteers, donors and customers is crucial to make sure Mind’s shops can survive in this challenging climate facing our high streets. Mind won’t turn away suitable donations and will always be grateful of any time you can give. Donating or volunteering at your local Mind shop in Yorkshire and the Humber means Mind can continue to be there for the growing number of people in need.” Marc Chapman has been volunteering at Taunton Mind Shop since it opened in 2019. He said: “I had major spinal surgery 25 years ago which impacted my mental health. I went to my local Mind and was introduced to a nice gentleman who was really helpful. He sympathised with everything I’d been through, and offered me the help I needed. After receiving that support my health stabilised, but I didn’t have work, so I was becoming very isolated - I really needed something to keep my brain ticking over. I heard a Mind shop was opening nearby, so I asked if I could volunteer there. I’ve been here ever since! My colleagues at the shop are like family to me, so it’s great to finally see them all again now lockdown’s over. I found the lockdowns extremely tough, but I would’ve suffered much more if it wasn’t for the support Mind gave me. That’s why I continue to volunteer for Mind, because they got me through those dark days.” Donna Hackett started volunteering at Camden Mind Shop in 2016 and is now the shop Manager. She said: “Before I started volunteering, I was very isolated. I’d been out of work for a long time, so I was looking for something which would help me get back into a routine and regain confidence. One day, I was walking down my high street and spotted a Mind shop. Mind was a charity I had always wanted to support, as I was diagnosed with bipolar 20 years ago, so I went in and signed up as a volunteer. The staff there made it really easy for me to get involved, as they took away a lot of the obstacles I had faced in workplaces previously. They were very flexible about me changing my days when I wasn’t feeling well, so it was a very supportive environment to work in. Volunteering gave me a sense of purpose, helped me get back into work, and really benefited my mental health.” To find your local shop in Yorkshire and the Humber, visit mind.org.uk/shopsnearyou

Sheffield City Council have announced that they will continue our commitment to support thousands of children and young people with free food vouchers during the May Spring Bank Holiday to stop “holiday hunger” as the coronavirus continues to impact families. They recognise that many families continue to face financial difficulties because of the pandemic and in support they have committed to also providing vouchers for the children who are eligible for free school meals and those who access social care or Multi Agency Support Team, or get income assessed Early Years support over the upcoming May Spring Bank Holiday. This forms part of the Covid19 emergency response that also saw food vouchers issued to families during the October, Christmas, February and Easter holidays. Families of 31,500 children in Sheffield will be receiving vouchers of £15 per child via a letter sent out this week with details enclosed on how and where to redeem the voucher. Families must activate their code within 3 months, or it will expire. Once the voucher has been claimed it will be valid for 12 months. Kate Josephs, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council said: “Although restrictions are beginning to lift and we’re thankfully moving along the roadmap as planned, more than a year on from the start of the pandemic many

people are still feeling the strain of its disruption. Keeping children healthy, happy and safe is our priority so I am delighted that we can support them again with food vouchers in this way. We recognise the pressure many of our families are under financially, but I hope these vouchers will relieve the worry of how to feed their children during the holidays. I encourage everyone who receives a voucher to claim it.” Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Families said: “School holidays should be a time of joy and fun for families, but we know that Covid-19 had made life difficult for our families and continues to do so despite the easing of restrictions. No family should have to worry about where their child’s next meal is coming from during the holidays and, as a council, we are committed to making sure that this doesn’t happen. It’s fantastic that we are able to provide free school meal vouchers once again, to support to our most vulnerable children and families at what can be an incredibly challenging time.” If you have difficulty accessing the e-voucher website or don’t have access to a computer, please contact your school for help in the first instance. You can also contact the Sheffield City Council Helpline on 0114 2734567, option 4, then option 3.

Celebrate Great British beer and pubs by getting back down the local, urge CAMRA CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is urging people across the country to support their local and get back down the pub now. As restrictions ease and indoor opening resumes across England, the consumer organisation is asking as many people as possible to use their local pubs and social clubs, and to choose drinks from local and independent brewers and cider producers, to help local businesses recover from the pandemic. Commenting, CAMRA National Chairman Nik Antona said: “Pubs matter and are a vital part of our communities up and down the country. As we mark the next milestone in the lifting of lockdown, I’m urging everyone who can to get back down to their local pub, social club or brewery taproom. “People are really looking forward to socialising safely without being subject to notorious British weather, as well as enjoying all the social and wellbeing benefits of having a pint at the local. “It is also vital that we give as much support as

possible to local breweries and cider producers as well as to our pubs so that they can survive and thrive after an exceptionally difficult year. “For those going back to the pub today please to be patient and courteous with pub staff who are doing their jobs in difficult circumstances and with a few extra rules than we are used to when we visit our local. “Whilst indoor opening today is a significant step in the right direction, many pubs will still struggle to make ends meet due to restrictions on the amount of customers they can serve. We are urging the Government to commit to lifting all remaining restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so, so that we can see a return to pubs operating at full capacity, with customers jostling for space and being able to chat with friendly faces while perched on a stool at the end of the bar. “If further restrictions aren’t lifted on 21st June then the Government must provide more financial support until our pubs can trade without restrictions. CAMRA is also calling on the Treasury to cut tax on draught beer served

in pubs to help encourage pub-going and give our locals a better chance to compete with cheaper supermarket alcohol in the months and years ahead.” #PubsMatter is a campaign to get people talking about why pubs and social clubs across the UK are a force for good. We want to shout from the rooftops about why pubs matter to people and communities. Learn more and find our social media frames at: https://whypubsmatter.org.uk/ The ‘Cask is BACK, so back CASK’ campaign calls on beer lovers to choose a pint of fresh cask beer from a local independent brewery when they return to the pub. Olga’s Wapentake years prove to be a top read The story of a rock bar run by one of the city’s most celebrated publicans has become the fastest selling book ever produced by a local publisher. Olga Marshall was the face of the Wapentake bar – which was sited under Sheffield’s Grosvenor House Hotel - from the early 1970s right up to the late 1990s. She was an unlikely figurehead for the Newcastle Brown drinking, rock music listening bunch of motorbike riding aficionados that frequented her venue. Always impeccably dressed without a hint of the heavy metal trademark denim or leather – Olga Marshall was already a mother of four by the early 1970s when she first started at the Wapentake. She didn’t smoke and she rarely drank alcohol. Olga Marshall’s proudest achievement at the Wapentake was arguably a return visit by Def Leppard at the height of their fame in 1995. She’d spotted their potential and they’d performed one of their earliest gigs at the Wapentake many years earlier – the band were also regulars when they were just starting out. Neil Anderson, author of the ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Sheffield – Wapentake Edition’, said: “Olga Marshall and the Wapentake were truly legendary in Sheffield. I had more advance orders for this book for anyone I’ve ever done – interest has been phenomenal.” ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Sheffield – Wapentake Edition’ is available for £14.95 from www.dirtystopouts.com

UNITED DEPART THE PREMIER WITH A WIN United signed off the Premier League season with a win after David McGoldrick’s first-half strike was enough to sink Burnley as fans returned to Bramall Lane. The Blades experienced a home atmosphere for the first time since defeating Norwich City 14 months ago, and the fans who were allowed to attend were rewarded after McGoldrick treated them to a welltaken winner in the firsthalf after a terrific low effort from 25 yards. United made one change following defeat at Newcastle with the fit-again George Baldock returning at right wing-back in place of Jayden Bogle who dropped to the bench. Young striker Will Osula was included amongst the subs for the first time after a string of impressive performances at U18 and 23 level. With fans making themselves heard inside Bramall Lane for the first time this season, there

was a heartfelt tribute to Blades legend Len Badger after he sadly passed away this week with the entire stadium holding a minute’s applause in the second minute. Burnley came close to opening the scoring early when Chris Wood’s header from a Dwight McNeil corner flashed just wide, whilst Aaron Ramsdale was called into action soon after to tip over McNeil’s shot from just inside the area. United started to build some momentum when good play down the left saw Enda Stevens’ cross just evade Daniel Jebbison, with Baldock getting to the loose ball but his cross to the back post was put over by McGoldrick from a tight angle. Baldock was booked soon after for a late challenge on Josh Brownhill, and then came the moment the supporters had been waiting over a year for. Stevens threaded a neat pass into McGOLDRICK who then surged forward

from deep. With no-one closing down the striker, he accepted the invitation to shoot arrowing a wellplaced shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards. Ben Osborn was the next to test young Will Norris from distance as Burnley again stood off, this time the Clarets ‘keeper gathered the shot at the second attempt. United were unfortunate not to extend the lead before half-time when a low cross wasn’t fully cleared. Basham picked up the loose ball, side-stepped his man and then crashed an effort against the post. Before the break John Fleck joined Baldock in the book for a trip on McNeil. Burnley made an attacking change at half-time with the introduction of Matej Vydra in place of Brownhill. United had the first chance of the half when McGoldrick again drove into the area from deep but his stinging low effort was blocked by James Tarkowski.

The Blades had further half chances with John Egan heading over from a corner whilst Jack Robinson’s deep cross picked out McGoldrick who planted a difficult header over the bar. Burnley started to press in search of an equaliser and there was almost a chance when Tarkowski met a freekick ahead of the advancing Ramsdale, but Ollie Norwood was well placed to clear the loose ball. Chris Basham became

the third United player cautioned for a foul on Vydra, whilst Sean Dyche made another attacking sub as Jay Rodriguez replaced McNeil. Jebbison was replaced by Rhian Brewster with 10 minutes remaining, whilst veteran Phil Jagielka also earned a well-deserved run out 21 years since his first Blades appearance when he came on for Osborn. Brewster had a half-chance to net when he was found on the edge of the area by

McGoldrick, but the low effort was held by Norris. Jimmy Dunne was cautioned late on whilst Johann Gudmundsson was replaced by Ashley Barnes. McGoldrick flashed an effort wide late on, whilst Robinson made a great clearance when Wood beat Ramsdale to a flick on, but the Irishman was across to clear in the nick of time as United held out for a deserved win.

LOOKING FORWARD TOGETHER Proud to have It’s been over 14 months since Wednesday fans were last inside Hillsborough and speaking on the behalf of the team, manager Darren Moore says the day can’t come soon enough when supporters are welcomed back to S6. As far as Moore is concerned, what matters now is the preparation for a new season, together as one, with fans close to their team after a hugely difficult year. The prospect of leading his Owls side out at Hillsborough next season with fans right behind the boys is one that provides plenty of motivation for the boss. A lot of work is to be done before that opening game, but Moore is already looking to the future – a future which has Sheffield Wednesday at the heart of the community and fans playing a key role. “We have to come together as one, we have to,” Moore said. “Coming together as one will see us progress together and that’s my message. I’m saying that as the manager. “We’re really looking forward to seeing them all but it’s really important we come together as one. “Let’s all come together as players, staff, supporters, everyone connected to the club and move this thing together.

“Our mentality and mindset are to only look forward now.” And a big part of next season, as we see more and more normality restored to daily lives, is the work of the club in the community. Moore continued: “We’re looking forward to the players coming back and

getting things in place where we’re engaging us as a football club back into the community and the community back into the football club. “To build those close relationships is really important. The importance of a football club on its community is massive,

it’s huge and something I believe in – same when I was a player. “I certainly believe as a manager, a group of players, a football team, we have to connect with the city of Sheffield and we’ll be doing just that.”

worn the shirt A parting message from Tom Lees To all Wednesdayites, I could not leave the club without taking the time to thank you all for everything you have done for me over the last seven plus years. The welcome I received immediately and the support over the years really means so much to me and I won’t forget it. The pre kick-off part of ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ when the music cuts out and the fans take over will never leave me. I’m proud to have worn the shirt 274 times during my time here, and have been fortunate enough to captain the side for a lot of that period. That is something which no one can take away from me and I’ll always be able to look back on in the future and say I did that for a club like Sheffield Wednesday. I’ve shared a dressing room with some great players and great people over the years - many of whom I’ll stay friends with for the rest of my life. I leave with so many great memories and moments shared with them. I would like to thank the staff working at the club behind the scenes who have looked after me since I arrived as a young lad, the managers and their staff I’ve played for, and my sponsors who have always supported me. I am obviously gutted the situation the club is in as I leave and the way my last game finished. It’s not how I ever envisaged it would be, but looking back at my time I know I can say I gave every single bit of myself in training, playing and in trying to improve the club off the pitch. I wish the club all the best in the future, and I am sure I’ll come back and show my family where I spent some of the best years of my career. Thanks, Tom

Hunt looking forward to the work ahead Noel Hunt says he’s looking forward to getting to work after being appointed as Rovers assistant manager. The 38-year-old will link up once again with manager Richie Wellens after the pair enjoyed success together at Swindon Town. He said: “I’m absolutely delighted, once I knew Richie had got the job I was keen to join him. It’s a brilliant setup here and I’m excited to be a part of it. “I’ve come up against Doncaster plenty of times as a player and always enjoyed playing at the Keepmoat, so to be in the home dugout now is something I’m looking forward to. “The last few months I’ve been going to watch games without fans in the stadium, and they’ll make a massive difference when they’re back in next season.” With a few weeks to go before the first-team are back in for pre-season training, Hunt says plans are already being put in place for when they return. He added: “It’s important that we create that culture and set the standards for the players so we can take the club forward. “We have plans in place for how we can put together a really good footballing side, if you put the hours in on the training ground then that will happen. “There are plenty of things for me and the manager to work on, we’re already putting building blocks in place ready for the players coming back in at the end of June.”

Chieo receives first international call-up Rotherham United attacker Chiedozie Ogbene has received his first ever call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad, ahead of their international friendly double header against Andorra and Hungary. The flying-winger could be in-line to make his international debut when Stephen Kenny’s side travel to Johan Cruyff Stadium to face Andorra in Barcelona on Thursday 3rd June. Five days later, The Boys in Green travel to face Hungary at Szusza Ferenec Stadion, as they continue their preparations for the remaining 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Ogbene, who missed the majority of the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship campaign through an injury he sustained in October last year returned to the first-team fold in the final month of the season. And the 24-year-old has impressed manager Stephen Kenny enough to hand him his maiden call-up to the senior ranks. Everyone at Rotherham United would like to congratulate Chieo on this fantastic news, following what has been a tough season for him as a result of his injury.
