SHEFFIELD 2018 COULD GENERATE £300 MILLION Talking at Sheffield 2018 – What’s in it for Business?, Chris Gratton, professor of sport economics and co-director of the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University, explained how Sheffield could potentially see an astonishing £300 million boost to its economy if identified as a Host City for the 2018 World Cup. The event was organised by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and the Sheffield 2018 team to encourage local businesses to back the Sheffield 2018 bid and recognise the enormous potential benefits of bringing FIFA World Cup games and fan parks to the city. Gratton used the 2006 World Cup in Germany as a benchmark to show what the potential impact could be. The German economy benefited to the tune of €2.56 billion from overseas visitors: €1.47 billion from the matches and another €1.09 billion from international visitors to fan parks. He expected that these figures could be doubled as far as host cities were concerned if
non-resident domestic visitors to host cities were also taken into account. Fan parks, which were introduced in Germany, are locations with giant TV screens and entertainment arranged for football fans without tickets. This encouraged a much larger proportion of people to be a part of the World Cup and allowed for a more even spread of economic value right across the country. Professor Gratton described how each match at the 2006 World Cup generated on average €40 million from foreign visitors alone. However, he warned that the economic impact could be diluted in cities that didn’t secure the most high profile matches. For example, during Euro 96 Birmingham gained £2.87 million per match hosting teams that were in the same group as England. However, Sheffield, who hosted Turkey, Croatia, Portugal and Denmark, only achieved £1.65 million per match. Also addressing delegates at the event were Football legend and World Cup winning goal keeper Gordon Banks, and

Liberal Democrat leader and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg. After his famous inspirational 1966 World Cup save was shown to delegates on screen, Banks explained that Sheffield would be an ideal host city if England’s 2018 World Cup bid is successful due to it being “a football-loving city that has produced wonderful players.” Nick Clegg added: “It is worth repeating the astonishing football heritage in this city - the oldest club, Sheffield Football Club; the oldest ground, Hallam FC’s ground; the oldest recognised professional ground, Bramall Lane and rules derived from the way the game was played in this city in the 1870s. “Sheffield would make an excellent host city for the 2018 World Cup. Hosting World Cup matches would only add to our great city’s already fine sporting heritage. “Local businesses and organisations must now all come together to secure the opportunity to show off Sheffield to the travelling fans from across the globe.”

An Open Mind A weekly column written by International Medium, Author & Visionary Joanne Gregory
A WEEKLY COLUMN WRITTEN BY INTERNATIONAL MEDIUM, AUTHOR & VISIONARY JOANNE GREGORY
INSPIRATION!
If you are a regular reader of this column I’m sure you will have worked out by now that I believe what you send out, you get back. I hope you have taken some of what has been said on board and are starting to see positive differences for yourself. The main changes occur for us when we visualise positive change and believe it can happen. If we incorporate our feelings too there is nothing that we cannot achieve. Our feelings allow us to connect and perceive the life giving energy that flows through everything within our universe. Good feelings allow us to manifest great things to us. The frequency of creation is on a par with a really good belly laugh, love for someone special and a day when everything went right. You can get there by default but you can also get there on purpose! I love this time of year, autumn and the run up to Christmas but I’m beginning to see that not everyone feels the same. So what do we do when ‘feeling good’ doesn’t happen naturally? Music is an essential tool for altering our state and therefore our feelings. Some songs just have a feel good factor. No matter what your taste in music is, there are some songs you just have to sing along to. There are several play lists on my Ipod and one of them is full of songs that will lift me even when I don’t know how to lift myself. Why not try that for yourself, you really can turn a ‘bad’ day around by altering how you feel through what ever source you can find, music being a great starting point. I use the five pieces of joy rule whenever my feelings are low. I incorporate five joyous activities every day if I can anyway but especially so when I need a boost. Whatever makes you feel good do it as often as possible and use the rise in frequency to visualise where you want to be instead of where you don’t! Driz-
zly autumn days and dark nights, if they are not your thing, can be negated by a hot chocolate with crumbled flake, an open log fire, Vivaldi’s four seasons and a film starring Hugh Jackman (really self indulgent for me). I’ve incorporated the following quotes today, some of which I have around my home in the hopes that they will inspire you and help you to feel better, because when you feel good, good things happen.

2009 STONES BITTER/MERCURY CLUBLAND AWARD WINNERS Well here we are. At the dawn of another Mercury Awards, thousands of votes cast, postal votes delivered and the emails taking up the entire computer’s memory space. We can finally announce the results for the 2009 Stones Bitter, Mercury Newspaper Clubland Awards. Again, as in every year, the voting has been extremely close, which only goes to show what a fabulous array of acts, Yorkshire Clubland has to offer and can be justly proud of. The Best Solo Male Vocal Entertainer: Well over a thousand votes submitted for this category with the leader board changing three times during the last month alone. Many great male entertainers’ names grace the runners up list, some old, some new but I’m sure you will agree, ALL - have entertained us royally during the past year. One name to the solo game however shone through the ranks with a steady stream of admiring fan’s votes. A young man with an incredible voice and a talent to entertain. MARK LAWRENCE The Best Solo Female Vocal Entertainer - This year, again as in last, not every voting form had each category completed, with many voters only voting for one or two categories, but one constant remained an overwhelming amount of votes for the best female artiste section, in fact this category received the highest amounts of votes. Proof again that the female artistes in the Yorkshire region certainly deserve the admiration and support given from many a pub and club visitor. This year’s winner. ABBY LEIGH ROWAN Best Duo This year saw a huge amount of votes for this category; supporting the fact that duo’s have made a huge impact on many club audiences. The winners this year. NEW CHEVRONS.
Best Band (with instruments) The voting was very close, but with so many fabulous bands on the circuit today I guess club goers were spoilt for choice – Many different styles of bands made the top ten, some theatrical, some playing rock, some pop and some soul. The winning band a fairly new band to the circuit, but an act that have made an incredible impression on the club land audience, evident by the huge number of votes this band have received by post, text and on the internet. ONE WAY Best Vocal Group. Club land stages many fabulous vocal harmony groups with the sounds of Motown and soul sung by a large majority of these acts. Three years in a row for these winners and their huge following of fans have ensured that these purveyors of Motown and the Philadelphia sound are acknowledged as the leaders in their game. Club land voted in their 100,s for this act and their winning majority was the largest of all the categories. THE MANHATTANS Best All Round Entertainer: This was the third year of voting for this category, again decided upon, having listened to the many requests of readers who asked for an award to acknowledge that act or artiste who entertains them not only vocally but presents their performance to the highest standard. Many leading club land entertainers certainly fall into that category, votes were submitted in their hundreds and with only a few votes separating the leader board, this too went to the wire, but this person certainly deserves the accolade of best all round entertainer taking club land by storm and filling many venues. GARY PHILLIPS Best Comedy Entertainer. This award may have been considered amongst many of the Mercury readers as a foregone conclusion but an open vote if nothing else gives club land supporters the chance to register their
appreciation of many others up and coming and established comics who also grace the regions stages. However this year’s winner by the largest majority of votes ever received. JIMMY CAROL Best newcomer. With club land being fortunate to see so many new entertainers it seems a shame to present this award to only one winner, however one winner there is. These talented newcomers set the new standards and I’m pleased to say that the winning entertainer is gathering a huge following of admiring fans. this performer led the voting from the beginning with a huge amount of votes received. ALAN TURNER. And finally The Life Time Achievement Award. Awarded in recognition of a long and illustrious career in club land. This year’s award goes to an entertainer who entertained us at the very highest standard for many many years with a truly outstanding voice and a very charismatic style of entertaining, but, who sadly had to cut short his career. Fronting bands and as a solo singer The Mercury Newspaper is delighted to present this year’s award to GLEN DALE. The votes have come from the people who matter: the audience; the pub and club members, their friends and their families, all those who appreciate the tremendous ability of club lands finest entertainers. The Mercury Newspaper and Stones Bitter for their part are privileged to be associated with these awards, and look forward to meeting many of our readers at the forth coming Mercury Club land Awards presentations.
IN REPLY TO...
mentioned that your clubs wont get rich on me he’s right. I don’t drink a lot but between me and my partner I spend aprox. 20 to 30 pounds per night in clubs 3 to 4 times a week. This is on drinks, tickets etc. so work that out. I support clubs quite a lot but it is spread out between a few. He also mentioned six clubs in a 5 mile radius. When I was concert sec you also had, and still have, the Hartley House /Shiregreen club plus The Horseshoe, Pheasant, Penguin, Sicey and Shiregreen pubs to contend with so don’t try to say we only had to open the doors to get people in because I like many know how hard a job it is to be a con sec/committee member. Also it just goes to show how naïve Mr Cooper can be because as a member of the said club I have opinions and thoughts on my home club but obviously they can’t be said. But again is this a failing of a few clubs, DO YOU ASK YOUR MEMBERS WHAT THEY WANT and what can be done to make their club better? He also mentioned acts been cheaper in mid-week but this as always been the case but as I’ve harped on about before its time for the clubs to get their heads together and tackle this subject because I can bet 2 or 3 clubs
within the same area are being charged different prices for the same acts and why is this because you don’t talk to each other and in some cases you use just one agent to get all you acts through so you lose some of that control. What some clubs need to do is, like it says in the editors notes, to look at what you as a customer would want from your club or the club you are visiting Also in the editors notes brought to light some things I have mentioned ie advertising ,peoples passion for clubs and charging one thing I did take umbridge to is that I visit the same clubs to see my favourite acts can I just say yes I have my favourite acts and not all bands and some I don’t report on but over the last month we have visited 19 different clubs and a couple of these I’d never been to before, and some more than once, and we have also seen 26 different artistes so all in all I don’t think we do that bad really and that’s why im taking a break from writing this column so I can visit more clubs and go on holiday and return the day before The Mercury awards so hopefully I will see you all there were we can have a drink and a chat
In last weeks Mercury it was stated that some people don’t like my opinions but as I’ve always said these opinions of mine are only some of the ideas that are also used in various clubs around South Yorkshire and they seem to work in various clubs and by looking at them I had hoped other clubs would take on board what your fellow clubs are doing to make your own clubs successful. Like a few years ago I put an idea to the then concert sec of Bellhouse Road, John Dixon who has retired from the committee due to ill health about doing a rock night on Friday nights. The club, John, along with the committee ADVERTISED this and it started to become successful and we have seen some top rock bands there .So he also went on about people not coming out due to X Factor, 500 Sky channels etc. Do these get switched off on a Thursday when people go to Wickersley, no they don’t. Wickersley have found a niche market as the Bellhouse did on a Friday and the likes of Greasborough on a Wednesday they put top entertainment on and people come in. It was also

Alreet everyone Longtime no write from Old Howmuch down here @ Firth Park WMC but I just had to back up everything that Eddie Concert Sec at the Bellhouse WMC said re: the saviour of clubland here in Sheffield Derek. THE GENTLEMAN IS LIVING IN A TIME WARP and everything that Eddie said is 100% true, long gone are the days of hopping on a bus 1 shilling a few pints 20 Park Drive & fish & chips on the way home and maybe even a promise, lol, great night out 3 quid for you and your lass. As are the days of queing up outside clubs to get in? GONE. HELLO; Welcome to 2009 taxi here, taxi there, high drink prices due to the breweries who can’t seem to see what they are doing to the WMC’s, massive taxes and the smoking ban, (Thanks for the help Blair & Brown). Although most clubs try and keep them as low as they can, well we do here at Firth Park WMC! and now an up coming monster tax/ rates increase for the clubs who put sporting events on for there members via sattelite TV something clubs put on to try and get more people in, the cost of entertainment and I will shout it from the rooftops to all singers bands etc regarding prices. THERE ARE MORE ACTS THAN WMC’S WORK IT OUT! Please work with us, in fact I was in touch with one of the biggest agents in the business this weekend and told him, as
TIMES ON STAGE I am this week coming out in the defence of the artistes on stage . After visiting a few clubs of late I seem to notice that acts seem to be going back on stage quite late for their second half. In one club we visited recently the band didn’t come on stage until 11pm then did a 45 min spot with 3 encores bringing it to midnight, then these guys have to pack up and in this case travel to the North East. Having set off at 3 in the afternoon to get home about 3 in the morning it makes it a long day so what I’m saying is do acts need to go on so late? Yes we know clubs and pubs open until later now days but and as pointed out by Eddie Cooper last week the streets are not safe as they used to be and people need to be catching the last buses home so customers are going to leave our clubs before the acts come off stage . So what I’m saying is there a realistic time for acts to come back on stage ? On our travels this week we went to see Foxx at Thurnscoe

Eddie pointed out, that there are 5 good clubs in our area and we are all after the same members to come and spend their hard earned cash in our own clubs. Not to send me any bands for 5 weeks min that have been on any of the other surrounding clubs on a Friday or Saturday night as I believe they are played out and this hits us and other clubs crowd-wise say on a Sat/Sunday if a band has already played close by people won’t turn out twice thus no good to band or club, FACT Last Friday we had a fantastic turnout for our 1st Halloween Family night with loads of kids and adults making a great effort to get in to the theme of thing with the fancy dress etc. Thanks to everyone who came I think that’s something we will no doubt be doing again next year for the kids and adults I must tell you about this weekend at Firth Park on the Saturday we have a very funny guy and also a good singer JAMES BRANDON who brought the house down with his last vist. On Sunday we have an all male fantastic group called THE SOULTOWN SWINGERS who if they stayed in the UK would be one of the top acts without a doubt check them out on YouTube who are just over here for the winter. In the Summer they are in Alcudia for the whole of the summer season and trust me they are a class act well worth the taxi fare? club. It was busy with a disco between the first and second half. The band, who I haven’t seen in a long while, had put in a lot of new songs and were very good on the night . We then travelled on to Grimethorpe Club in Barnsley to see Jagged Edge. Now I had never been in this club before and can I just say after the editors note a few weeks ago about clean and tidy clubs this one takes some beating. It was immaculate and was packed right until the end of the night so it shows what a bit of self help does. On Saturday we went to Barnsley Central to see Envy who haven’t performed in South Yorkshire clubs since January as they have
been doing holiday camps and theatres as a take that tribute show and on speaking to these guys have been very busy yet again the club was full and the audience very appreciative .
Just a qick line to say a big thank you to everybody who voted for me in this year’s Mercury Clubland Awards. To win this award once is an honour but to now win it three times is quite frankly overwhelming and I am humbled that so many people took the time out to put pen to paper and fingers to keyboards to vote me “best all-round entertainer”. I’d like to say a big thank you to all the concert secretaries and licensees who make you so welcome and do such a wonderful job in making the artistes comfortable and appreciated, the audiences who support their local clubs and pubs, the agents who support their artistes and of course the Mercury newspaper in promoting clubland in and around South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. These are worrying times for all involved within the club and pub industry with many outside factors fighting to keep us drinking at home, and as we have already realised, the road ahead won’t be easy and some will have to fall by the wayside. So therefore occasions like these awards are to be embraced and celebrated as a much needed boost to an industry under attack from all areas.A big “Well Done” to all the other award winners, especially to the “best male vocalist” my mate Marc Lawrence, (which is richly deserved) and to every other artiste who ply their trade working their socks off, week in, week out, in this crazy industry called “clubland”. So in conclusion, give support to your local pub or club as in many cases they are the heart and lifeblood of the community and need as much support as they can get. Gary Philips

Editor’s note: It might be worth pointing this out. Bands generally leave the house between 4pm and 5pm and get in again 10 - 12 hours later. The agent will almost always earn more out of a gig than a band member. As well as setting up and playing and tackling down the band carries all the risk of equipment and transport failure and the attendant expense. Very often they make around minimum wage for their effort. Let’s hear it for the bands they do a great job. Win the lottery. What’s a good example of a missed opportunity?
A bus-load of
politicians going over a cliff with one empty seat.
Regrettably, the big story occupying the newspapers this week concerns footballer Marlon King, jailed for eighteen months for assaulting a young girl. Footballers in general appreciate the fame and extreme wealth that goes with the job, at the same time realising that their exalted position carries certain responsibilities. The prime one of course is that they should be role models for the younger generation. It is sad that a minority seem to think that they are in some way better than everyone else and that loutish behaviour is acceptable. No amount of money can purchase class, and my perspective is that on a night out, none of them could outdrink me, and it is not long odds that any of them would outpay me either. They are just like you and me except that they get obscene amounts of money for their ability to kick a ball around in front of a large audience. However, for someone to suggest that Mr. King be thrown out of football is sheer lunacy. I reckon that he will be better employed on his release, having learned his lesson, expounding his energy on a football pitch, rather than in a pub or nightclub. Women (and men with one arm) should be protected at all times. Gordon Brown promised us that he would put an end to boom and bust. He has got it half right, having got rid
of the boom. We now find ourselves back in a position where vital workers are going out on strike. I am indebted to the sender of the best text of the week saying that Sheffield United have signed three strikers, a binman, a postman and a bus driver. Where I live in Dronfield Woodhouse, the postman has chosen, presumably for financial reasons, not to strike. I have mixed reservations about this however, having received two missives, one from the taxman and the other from the Child Support Agency. However, my cavalier attitude to life convinces me that a man should pay his taxes and provide for his kids. I was pleased to be be invited to the landmark birthday party of Von Howe, wife of local entertainer and actor Johnnie. Politeness forbids me to mention which landmark it is, but I think it may be her fiftieth. Happy birthday Von and thank you on behalf of Caron and myself for the invitation. I can’t believe that we are already into November, and on the day the Mercury comes out, there will be exactly fifty shopping days to Christmas. Heaven help the Christmas shoppers if my experience in Meadowhall has anything to go by. This was not the happiest three hours of my life, being jostled by the many other shoppers, endless queues to pay and probably the worst of all, waiting outside the ladies changing rooms
clutching a pair of ladies highheeled boots. Shopping is not a man thing. My new policy is get out the Argos catalogue, order what you want, pay for delivery and sit back and watch a bit of television until the things are delivered. I trust that this free plug for Argos will be suitably rewarded the next time I order. I am for ever seeking knowledge and was pleased to receive a text helping me to understand the female gender which reads as follows: Five words that women use (1) FINE: This is the word women use t6o end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. (2) FIVE MINUTES : If she’s getting dressed, this means half an hour. (3) (NOTHING : This is the calm before the storm. This means something and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with NOTHING usually end in FINE. (4) GO AHEAD : This is a dare , not permission. Don’t do it. (5) LOUD SIGH : This means that she needs to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistakes Howard says : All men should heed the last bit, study the terminology, and maybe avoid arguments. ACCEPTABLE BROTHER’S IN THE O2 IN ARMS! CALVIN HARRIS/MR HUDSON LIVE REVIEW
As Mr Hudson’s Supernova finished, Sheffield went ‘f***ing mental’ at Calvin Harris’ request. Mr Hudson had prior set the atmosphere by feeding energetic youth into the audience as they sang along waving glow-sticks to his Jay-Z-less rendition of Forever Young. ‘How did you like Mr Hudson?’ Harris asked the crowd at the O2 Academy, who replied with a roar of gratitude. Having kicked off with The Rain which is also the track that opens his latest album Ready for the Weekend, the crowd prepared to worship the man who created disco (or so he says). Sheffield followers mirrored Harris’ hyper-active presence onstage as he jumped around to the electro tune. The lively ambience wasn’t sustained throughout the hour-long set as the less familiar tracks were showcased. However, Harris was having none of this, wasting no time injecting enthusiasm back into the crowd by jumping offstage to touch the hands of his honourers. The more popular tracks including The Girls and Acceptable in the 80’s rescued the mood as the crowd had somewhat recharged. Calvin was not alone in thinking his decision to leave the best until last was a good move as the followers rewarded the disco-electro-dance god with glow-sticks that were thrown onstage during the number one track I’m Not Alone. Sheffield arrived, and left the O2 Academy on this truly mental Friday night, satisfied and ready for the weekend. Review by Chiko Nabuzoka
BIRDMAN! Formed in 1995, Sheffield’s Babybird burst onto our radios the following year with “You’re Gorgeous”. The band are finally returning to The Leadmill after years of being away. The band was fronted by Stephen Jones, who has also released records as a solo artist, using his own name and the name Baby Bird. Jones had begun writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Sheffield. A collection of these demos (I Was Born a Man) was released in the summer of 1995, under the name Baby Bird. Following a warm critical reception for this record, he recruited a band. During 1995, two further albums of demo recordings were released under the name Baby Bird (Bad Shave and Fatherhood) and two in 1996 (The Happiest Man Alive and Dying Happy). By the end of the year, a decent public following had been built up, as well as quite considerable excitement within the press and music industry. Babybird were signed to Echo Records (a division of the Chrysalis Group), and the first “proper” single, a full-band recording of “Goodnight”, which had appeared in demo form on Fatherhood, was eventually released in the summer of 1996, becoming a minor chart hit in the UK. The second single, You’re Gorgeous, reached number 3 in the UK in October 1996, and was also one of the biggest selling singles of the year, going on to chart around the world. This remains the song for which Stephen Jones and Babybird are best known. When they play London next they will have a special guest with their biggest fan Johnny Depp due to perform on stage. (Yes that Johnny Depp). The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor has already directed the video to the band’s first single from their new album ‘ExManiac’. And now he is expected to play guitar with the band on stage! BABYBIRD: The Leadmill, Tuesday 10th November, Doors: 7pm, Price: £8, Age limit: 14s+
Local Killamarsh legends, Mick and Dez Bailey feature in two new books just released. “All Pens Blazing” and “Take it to the Limit” All Pens Blazing is a book chronicling four decades of rock journalism, featuring original interviews with 65 of the world’s most successful rock and metal journalists. Author Neil Daniels has interviewed the Bailey’s plus many more legendary scribers from renowned publications such as Melody Maker, Sounds, Kerrang, Classic Rock etc. Metal Hammer was the magazine Mick and Dez helped launch back in 1986 and they were instrumental in making it a huge success. Their regular two-page feature every fortnight was a huge hit with fans and bands alike. Two years later they were writing and presenting a no 1 rated TV show For MTV. Over the years the Bailey Brothers have had their work regularly translated and published in a Polish language magazine called Forbidden Freak. They have also had their work translated and published in German magazine Rock It “To have your work translated and published in another language and in other countries is quite an achievement and something we are very proud of said Dez”. “To be recognised and respected by your fellow journalists and feature beside renowned writers such as Gary Bushell shows how far we have come,” added Mick. “All Pens Blazing” has just been released and is available at amazon.co.uk Before the ink had dried on “All Pens Blazing” Mick and Dez were interviewed and feature in a book titled Take it to the Limit, a book by Neil Anderson about one of Sheffield’s most infamous live venues The Limit Club. The chair of Sheffield licensing magistrates refused to let the city’s legendary Limit club open at all unless it agreed never to book the band The Sex Pistols in its life time. The book contains exclusive interviews and comments from a host of Sheffield acts/artists including Def Leppard, Human League, Bailey Brothers and scores more. ‘Take It To The Limit’ goes on sale from Monday, October 26th, and costs 12.95. There’s a Limit reunion at the Casbah, Wellington Street (formally The Wapentake) on Nov 28th the advance ticket fee £15.00 includes a copy of “Take It To The Limit available from the Plug, The Washington, Bath Hotel, and The Casbah. GOOD LORD! House of Lords was formed in 1988 by Giuffria members, keyboardist Gregg Giuffria (Angel) and bassist Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot). They brought in Alice Cooper drummer Ken Mary and the highly respected Lanny Cordola on guitars to fill out the instrumental portion of the group. They were destined to become a real supergroup. Based on the line-up and some early demos, they eventually caught the interest of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons, who immediately signed the band to his new custom label Simmons Records, a subsidiary of RCA/BMG. A new line-up added new life into the grandiose sound. Jimi Bell on guitars, B.J Zampa on drums and Jeff Kent on bass & keyboards make up the new powerhouse band. The latest CD is an extension of their critically acclaimed “Demons Down CD. Every song tells a story and every moment of music is House Of Lords at its best. “World Upside Down” The band arrive in Sheffield with a gig at the Corporation on the 6th. REED 77 B + OMT + THE SYMPHONY
TIME TO TALK TO BREED FRANK Unleashing the heaviest and most direct record of an already lengthy and distinguished career, the Gibraltarian born, and UK based quintet are fired up and ready for action. And next Monday (Nov 9) they will release the first single to be taken from their imminent ‘Insects’ album. Entitled ‘Wake Up’ it is a bludgeoning, rollercoaster of a track, employing Breed 77’s trademark infectious melody married to bone-jarring latino-riffery. From the ominous ticking clock intro through to the crushing outro (probably the heaviest thing Breed77 have ever done), it is a clear cut demonstration of the intent and style of the ‘Insects’ album. “This record is direct and straight to the point - no one’s going to be left on the fence on this one....it’s seriously intense – it will blow you away!!” says front man Paul Isola. With a ten year career, 4 albums and endless world tours under their belts, (not to mention a Top 40 single with ‘The River’ and over 50,000 UK sales, Breed77 are clearly a force to be reckoned with and a band that the UK can be truly proud of. Resolutely intense in both their outlook and musical output, they have garnered a well deserved reputation for their dynamic and individual take on post millennial heaviness. Mixing their native Mediterranean influences with contemporary metal and rock, (using a combination of English and Spanish), they have forged a sound that is simply – Breed 77! The ‘Insects’ album, (co-produced with Guillermo ‘Will’ Maya) is due out on November 16 2009. “We are really stoked with what feels like our most exciting work yet,” says guitarist Danny Felice. “We’ve pushed ourselves at all levels to produce what we feel is our heaviest album but still retaining that ‘Breed’ sound.” “We can’t wait to play these songs live,” continues bassist Stuart Cavilla. “That’s where they’re meant to be heard. The whole album plays like a live set - it’s killer!” Breed 77 - The Corporation - Wed 11th Nov - £9adv - 7pm
EXAMPLE JOINS LILY
Following a series of his own live dates, now Example has met his match and is about to join the UK’s mouthiest and biggest female superstar Lily Allen as the headline support on her UK tour. The 17-date UK tour kicks off in Sheffield on 16th November and runs through to 17th December coming to a climax at London’s Brixton Academy. Example burst onto the scene earlier this year with the release of the demonic club track ‘Hooligans’ and went onto to dominate the summer with the smash hit ‘Watch The Sun Come Up’ leading The Guardian to label him ‘a brilliant pop tinged superstar in the making’. Live, Example’s energy is limitless and his show is a no holds barred performance - his raps are razorwire sharp and his newfound love of all things pop comes through with killer choruses in tracks like the single ‘Watch The Sun Come Up’ and the Calvin Harris produced ‘Time Machine’. Fans will also be treated to a sneak preview of new single ‘Won’t
With his razor-sharp cheekbones, zig-zag undercut and bag full of sparkling musical moments FrankMusik is burning his image on to 09’s retina . Pop’s new leading man arrives in the form of a 23-year-old college dropout from Thornton Heath, South London. He is a musical polymath, playing, producing and writing his records. His talent impressed musical maven Stuart Price so much he took him into his studio where they worked together as equals: something that would have thrilled the teenage star as he grew up glued to late night house shows on Kiss FM and sneaking into clubs at 15. FrankMusik has run turbo-charged at stardom. His first single ‘Better Off As Two’ was released in spring followed by the second ‘Confusion Girl’ (as coined by GMTV “single of the summer”) leading straight into the release of his debut album ‘Complete Me’ at the beginning of August. This reached no.5 in the mid-week before settling at no.13 in the charts, making it the highest charting male debut album of 2009. The real story behind the album is of red raw heartbreak, written about one girl. Every performance of the songs is an emotional high-wire walk and every press interview a chance to exorcise a bit - giving him the unsmiling, deep thinking, slightly scary, faintly tongue in cheek look of a love child of Rimbaud and Verlaine if they’d been fans of the John Foxx of Ultravox. Vincent grew up in New Addington, a large estate outside Croydon that was dubbed ‘Little Siberia’ for its Soviet looks. Despite his humble circumstances Vincent’s drive and brains grabbed his obsessions by the throat. Firstly, BMX riding - he was semi-pro at one point. Then fashion - taking him to St Martins, where he learnt how to put together a mean handbag but quickly became disillusioned and decided his heart was in music. He worked all night at his computer writing and producing, holding down a day job at a Croydon jeans store. Moving out, he went to live with his Nan in Thornton Heath - who gave him the spare room to turn into a studio, a space for him to create his pop star self. Vincent started 2009 with a lightening schedule that saw him support Keane on their arena tour in front of 150,000 people, support Basement Jaxx at Wireless, only support on the Pet Shop Boys arena dates, remix Lady GaGa, headline Student Pride 09 in Brighton and embark on the world’s first interactive tour
Go Quietly’ and hear some Example classics like ‘Me & Mandy’ and ‘You Can’t Rap’ as well as the most recently released and totally deviant ‘Hooligans’ which earned Example the tag of ‘dysfunctional electro pop sensation’ by the NME. Expect to see a who’s who of industry tastemakers soaking up the Example live love later this year with the likes of Zane Lowe, Nick Grimshaw, Annie Mac, Judge Jules, Jo Whiley, Chris Moyles, Sara Cox and Pete Tong at Radio 1 singing his

reviews by presley Artist: The Prodigy Album: Invaders Must Die Special Edition Released: Mon 9th November
Artist: Jamie Cullum Single: I’m All Over It Released: Mon 9th November
Even though we reviewed this album when it was first released, it does deserve another mention. But that’s not the main reason we’re telling you about this again. The main reason is that this Special Edition of the album is probably the bargain of the century! Not only do you get the album in its entirety (of course) but you get extra tracks ‘The Big Gundown’ and ‘Wild West’ which are previously unreleased tunes. You also get a second cd with loads of remixes on. The good thing about The Prodigy is that they nearly always get good remixes, a thing that is quite rare believe it or not. Some of the remixes we get sent here at Drag are truly shocking, people (whether it be record companies or just the remixes themselves) trying to make an indie band sound like rubbish house duo for example. The Prodigy usually stay true to themselves and that can be said of these versions. The stand-out ones though are when the band themselves do the mixes and then you get something that is really exciting and they never bastardise their own songs. Then…………believe it or not (believe it) you get a DVD with all the videos done for the four singles released so far……. and then you also get the rest of the album tracks live, in full glorious multicolour DVD quality!! What more can you want from a package? Oh yeah, I know what else, a good price……………just over £8 from online sites such as Amazon etc etc. You really can’t grumble at that can you. Plus………….what a band!!!
A tad like last weeks Drag when we reviewed Michael Buble (told you it’d be a big hit). We have another crooner (kinda). And it’s all the rage it seems at the moment. To be honest with you, if the standard stays as high as this then I don’t mind if the Top 40 is full of this kinda stuff. This song is an upbeat ditty that has really cool black female backing vocals singing half of each chorus and it’s really f**king cool! Jamie’s confident enough to trust the fact that you can stretch your vocal till it cracks a little and keep it in the finished version. Realising that it’s cool. Music shouldn’t be all about the perfect X-Factor style vocal, it’s the imperfections that grab you. Great tune!
‘Live & Lost’ (a Channel 4 and MySpace show) as well as many UK festivals including Glastonbury. The rest of the year continues to be as fast paced as the beginning with FrankMusik performing on the Perez Hilton’s inaugural US Tour ‘Perez Hilton Presents’ in September and then returning to the UK for a headline tour. And so, we present FrankMusik: an intensely neurotic, glamorous, electroavid, self edited, self-selected, self-focussed, madly dedicated (and very busy) new pop star arriving with a wham bam thank you mam. Artist: Paolo Nutini Single: Pencil Full of LEad Released: Out Now I know this has been out a couple of weeks already, but while were on about crooners and the like and this retro-cool music that’s around at the moment. I can’t not mention this guy. Firstly he’s Scottish? A bit like Dario Franchitti the racing driver I presume (really!). Secondly, he’s a really unusual performer, when he’s next on the tele take note. Unusual but very cool, rather like his music. It’s much more jazzy then Jamie above, but it oozes coolness and this is another artist who’s gonna be around for years.

IDEAL CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
He expected that these figures could be doubled as far as host cities were concerned if non-resident domestic visitors to host cities were also taken into account. However,
he warned that the economic impact could be diluted in cities that didn’t secure the most high profile matches. For example, during Euro 96 Birmingham gained £2.87 million per match hosting teams that were in the same group as England. However, Sheffield, who hosted Turkey, Croatia, Portugal and Denmark, only achieved £1.65 million per match. Also addressing delegates at the event were Football legend and World Cup winning goal keeper Gordon Banks, and Liberal Democrat leader and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE WEEK 10
Sadly it didn’t turn out to be the Saturday of sport we hoped for this week. There was coverage of Rotherham United but not Sheffield Steelers. The Steelers were playing at Ice Sheffield this week in the Challenge Cup against Belfast Giants. The change of venue meant a long exchange of emails and telephone calls to organise the necessary connections to be able to broadcast commentary of the game. It turned out to be square pegs and round holes though and the white flag was shown late on Friday afternoon. The only option would have been to use our mobile broadcasting unit which was on its way to the Don Valley Stadium for Rotherham United against Aldershot Town. The Millers game was a dull 0-0 affair with enthusiasm difficult to muster in commentary; perhaps we’d have been better at Ice Sheffield to cover the Steelers win 5-3. After this disappointment, it was really lovely to hear from Eileen who called to let us know she was enjoying listening to our programmes. It’s not very often that people take the time to write or ring in to tell us how they’ve found Radio Nightingale, so it’s always very pleasing to hear from listeners who do spare that few moments. Feedback from the patients listening to Radio Nightingale is really important to help us develop our schedule to provide the right kind of programmes at the right times. So if you have any comments on the programmes you’ve heard on Radio Nightingale, please do get in touch. Last week we mentioned plans for the most challenging live outside broadcast Radio Nightingale have ever attempted. We visited the Rotherham Minster this week to make last arrangements and cables ahead of Remembrance Sunday service. We plan to broadcast the whole of the service from the Minster, starting at 9:45am on Sunday morning, and then continue the broadcast as the dignitaries leave the Minster in procession to the Cenotaph in Clifton Park to cover the wreath laying and the silence at 11:00am - ‘We Will Remember Them’. Radio Nightingale would like to extend thanks to the Abbey National Community Partnership this week for their £750 donation to our fundraising project to purchase new equipment for our studio. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. FOOTBALL - MILLERS NEWS
LOCAL SPORT NEWS
MILLERS LOSE TO LATE STRIKE Ronnie Moore’s quest for a home victory continues after the Millers were held 0-0 for a second successive time. Despite having the lion’s share of possession, they were unable to break down the visitors and had to settle for a point against Jason Dodd’s Aldershot. Ronnie Moore was forced into two changes for the visit of managerless Aldershot, with Paul Warne and Nick Fenton replacing the injured Micky Cummins and Nicky Law, who hasn’t trained all week with the ‘flu. Pablo Mills reverted back to midfield, and Warne was given license to roam in a flexible 4-3-3 formation. It was the visitors who had the first chance within a minute, John Grant fed Andy Sandell who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but was denied by a Mills tackle. The Millers soon came back into the game, and some quick thinking by Warne at a throw-in found Tom Pope in the area, who wriggled his way past Anthony Charles, and cut-back for Warne whose effort was blocked six yards out. Andy Nicholas had the first of two headers on 10 minutes, this one caught by Mikhael JaimezRuiz after it just escaped a touch from Adam Le Fondre. At the other end, Grant got between the Millers centre-halves but his effort was rushed, allowing Andy Warrington to watch it wide. Warne put two balls into the area that tested the Shots’ defence, the first one was met by Pope, but his effort was deflected over, and the second one was eventually dealt with by the goalkeeper, but his clearance left Millers captain Ian Sharps requiring treatment on the pitch. The final chance of the half came just before half-time, after some good work on the right by Le Fondre had won Rotherham a corner. Kevin Ellison’s inswinging delivery was flicked over the LOCAL SPORT NEWS
bar by the head of Pope, before referee Mr Booth brought the half to a close. The Millers reverted back to 4-4-2 for the second half, but the game failed to open up, with both sides struggling to create any clear cut chances. The first opportunity of the half fell to Danny Harrison on the edge of the area, but his left-footed attempt was deflected wide. Warne’s switch out wide almost paid off just before the hour, his new found freedom on the right hand side being utilised more by the team, and after a marauding run he played Dale Tonge in, whose cross found Ellison, but Jaimez-Ruiz was out quickly to block. Warrington was called into action for the first time on 63 minutes, tipping Adam Hinshelwood’s looping header over the bar, before Scott Donnelly hit a free-kick twenty yards out which struck the outside of the post just moments later. With 70 minutes on the clock, Ellison struck a twenty-five yard shot wide, before the Millers were denied by some magnificent goalkeeping, as Nicholas’ point blank header was acrobatically kept out by Jaimez-Ruiz. Despite much of the possession in the last 20 minutes, little else was created, and the visitors almost struck on the counter when substitute Marvin Morgan found space on the right hand side, but fortunately Tonge was on hand to block. Drewe Broughton was introduced for the final five minutes, but Rotherham were unable to break down Jason Dodd’s men, the final chance falling to Warne, but his header was high and wide of the goal. The result makes it four games without a victory now, but the Millers’ undefeated home record stretches to eight in the league this season.

FAIR POINT Ronnie Moore thought that a point was a fair result after the Millers drew 0-0 with Aldershot Town. After the game the Millers manager said: “A point was probably fair. Aldershot are a good footballing side but today we just lacked a cutting edge. In the last 15 minutes we upped the tempo, got crosses into the box but we are the home side and the strikers haven’t had a shot or a header between them, that isn’t necessarily their fault it is up to the team to provide. “We have been in a lot of games when we have come away with a draw when we should have won. Today we have had the best chances again with the header from Nicho. He has headed it down, like I tell every good striker to do, but the ‘keeper makes a save.” Both Adam Le Fondre and Tom Pope were quiet in attack for the Millers but Moore insisted that the required service wasn’t good enough for the front two. “Sometimes the service has got to be better,” he said. “We tried to pass the ball and play the right way but we tend to go route one too quickly. That certainly doesn’t suit Popey or Alfie, we need to play balls in behind so they can turn.” Pope worked tirelessly in attack but was replaced by Drewe Broughton for the closing stages after another frustrating afternoon in front of goal. “Tom is certainly lacking in confidence, there is no doubt about that,” added Moore. “I have seen him play at Crewe at the next level up and he was outstanding. He has scored goals against West Brom earlier this season but he is just lacking a little confidence at the moment but we will work on him in training and make him into the player we know he can be.”

MAN OF THE MATCH SHANKER SHOWS “HOWE” IT’S DONE This Saturday the Steelers broke their recent threegame losing streak, beating the Belfast Giants 5-2 at Ice Sheffield. The game opened with a fight between Steelers’ Brad Cruikshank and ex-NHL heavyweight Sean McMorrow. Having appeared on Radio Sheffield’s “Steelers Hockey” show the night before, McMorrow “called out” Cruikshank and the league’s other tough guys, claiming that by not fighting him they were not doing their jobs for their respective teams and fans. Cruikshank answered the call and within seconds of the first face-off the pair squared up, 6’4” McMorrow taking the upper hand early on over 5’10” Cruikshank, who hit the ice first. Whilst the Steelers may have lost the fight they went on to win the battle and were two goals up within the first seven minutes through Jeff Legue and Mark Thomas. Brandon Benedict pulled a goal back for the visitors at 8:16, but it was the Steelers who extended their lead in the second period with a goal from Matt Hubbauer at 31:25 before Jeff Legue added his second of the night with the game-winning goal at 36:00. Benedict scored his second goal at 39:13, but in the third period the Steelers took a three goal lead with a goal from Brad Cruikshank at 46:34 to complete his “Gordie Howe Hat-Trick” (a fight, a goal and an assist). The Giants scored again at 51:41 but it was too little too late and, despite
pulling their netminder in the closing stages of the game, the score remained 5-3 to the Steelers. A win on Sunday night would have guaranteed the Steelers a place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals, but as it stands Edinburgh can deny the club a place in the semi-finals, if they are able to win by five goals or more when they meet the Steelers next weekend (14/11). On Sunday the Steelers traveled to Belfast to face the Giants once again. Backup netminders Nathan Craze and Dan Green started in net and both put in a sound performance during an end-to-end game. The home side opened the scoring within the first two minutes with a goal from Evan Cheverie, and looked to have the game all wrapped up when they went a further two goals up, Pat Bateman and Jeff
Szwez scoring powerplay and shorthanded goals. In the final minute of the first period Brad Cruikshank pulled a goal back, assisted by Rod Sarich - his 200th EIHL point in all competitions. The Giants were three goals up again in the second period, as Craig Peacock hit the back of the net. Jeff Legue scored his third goal of the weekend to make it 4-2. Neither team scored again until halfway through the third period, when Rob Dowd scored closely followed by Brad Cruikshank adding his second goal of the game to tie the score at 4-4. Brandon Benedict scored the final goal for the Giants on the powerplay at 55:23. The Steelers face the Newcastle Vipers on Friday November 6th , 7:30pm at the Sheffield Arena. Tickets can be booked through the box office (0114 256 56 56).

Sheffield Wednesday posted a fully deserved point at in-form Bristol City on Saturday. The Robins went into the game with the jointbest home record in the division but Wednesday put on a spirited and enterprising display to emerge with a share of the spoils. Nicky Maynard opened the scoring for City but Luke Varney hit back to earn the Owls a welcome point. And substitute Leon Clarke almost won all three for Wednesday, only to be denied by a world class save from Dean Gerken. SWFC made three changes from the team that lost 4-1 at Watford last time out. Brian Laws was contemplating a rethink following that dismal night in Hertfordshire, but with a virus sweeping through the S6 camp in midweek, the Owls boss had to shuffle his pack regardless. Wednesday adapted a 4-3-3 formation with Frank Simek recalled to the defence alongside Richard Hinds and Lewis Buxton, while Tommy Miller started in the engine room. Jermaine Johnson, Marcus Tudgay and Varney spearheaded a threepronged attack. Tommy Spurr captained the side in the absence of Darren Purse and an under-strength bench was padded out with youngsters Max Wragg, Nick Wood and Nathan Modest. Despite the unfamiliar look and system, the Owls started brightly with Miller forcing Dean Gerken into a smart near post save inside two minutes. Tudgay and Varney then linked up well before the Derby loanee struck the woodwork on the turn, but the linesman’s flag would have ruled out the strike for offside had it gone in. City’s maiden threat came on 13 minutes and almost brought the first goal. Danny Haynes swung a floating ball into the danger zone from the right for Marvin Elliot to glance a goalbound header that Lee Grant expertly tipped over the crossbar. The game settled into a calmer pace following the hectic start, with City enjoying more of the ball but Wednesday were resolute at the back and looked capable on the break. Maynard brought a comfortable save from Grant while the Owls responded with Johnson going close from distance. But the best chance of the opening period fell to Varney 12 yards out ten minutes before the interval. Great work by Miller saw Varney with the ball at his feet and the goal gaping but the striker fired only a tame shot straight into the arms of Gerken. City skipper Louis Carey then
denied Tudgay with a last-ditch tackle as the latter was about to pull the trigger from close range and it was Wednesday that ended the half the stronger. The hosts made two changes for the start of the second half as Carey and Lee Johnson made way for Alvaro Saborio and Paul Hartley. City altered their formation to 4-4-3, clearly in a bid to take the game to Wednesday. And the move paid dividends on the hour. Hinds cleared a Nyatanga effort cleared off the line and after a brief scramble, the ball fell to dangerman Maynard on the edge of the area. The Robins’ top scorer forced his way through two challenges and duly poked into the back of the net to put City into the driving seat. Laws introduced Clarke from the bench for Miller and the hitman almost made an immediate impact. City failed to clear their lines following an Owls free kick and Clarke’s sidefooter was destined for the bottom corner before Gerken pulled off a stunning save low to his right. Hinds then appeared to be clattered from behind in the area by Jamie McCombe only for the referee to wave away strong claims for a Wednesday penalty. But the Owls deservedly drew level on 75 minutes. James O’Connor fed Tudgay, who in turn found Varney, and the on-rushing hitman drilled a low shot from 22 yards that positively flew past Gerkin. Wednesday had their tails up and Varney went close three minutes later, forcing Gerken into a diving save after taking Clarke’s feed into his stride. Both sides had half chances in the closing stages but a winner from either might have proved harsh, with a point apiece about the right result from an entertaining contest in the West Country.

LAWS PRAISES BATTLING OWLS Brian Laws paid tribute to his depleted troops after Sheffield Wednesday posted a creditable 1-1 draw at Bristol City. A flu-type bug has swept through the Owls camp this week, leaving Laws without a host of players for the Ashton Gate clash. But the team selected for City responded in the best possible way and turned in arguably one of their best away performances of the season. Laws said: “If you would have asked me before the game ‘would you be happy with a point?’ I’d have said yes. But I’ve come away from that game disappointed we haven’t won it. And massive, massive praise goes to the players, they stuck to the game plan and worked their socks off to get a result and you can’t ask for anything more as a manager than that.” The flip side of the virus saw the likes of Frank Simek, Richard Hinds and Tommy Miller thrust into action. All three gave excellent accounts of themselves, although Laws picked out utility man Lewis Buxton - who was moved into central defence in Bristol - for particular praise. “Lewis Buxton was tremendous and I’ve got to say, if I had to single anyone out, he would be my man of the match. We had to play Lewis at centre half and I thought he was excellent in there. He was calm and composed and made some excellent decisions. “Richard Hinds came in for his first full game this season and he was extremely effective. I also thought we saw the trademark Frank Simek this afternoon. It gives me a great problem in terms of team selection for next Saturday and it tells everybody else that they have to perform to stay in the team.” Laws concluded by insisting that only a wholesale ‘clearing of the decks’ at Middlewood Road will rid the camp of the virus that caused Wednesday to inform the Football League of the problem ahead of Saturday’s game. He added: “We will have a clearing of the decks next week, there is no doubt about that. Another player went down with it before the game and then two more players were still recovering and they are exhausted as we speak. Tommy Miller was physically sick at half time. “We’ve had two members of staff go down with the virus as well so the next thing we need to do is hopefully get this virus completely out of the way because it’s knocked the living daylight out of us.”

Wishing The Owls All the Best This Season
Sheffield Wednesday can confirm that the club’s Annual General Meeting will take place on November 24 at the Mercure St Pauls Hotel in Sheffield City Centre. The AGM, open to all shareholders will start at 10.30am on the day and those attending the meeting will need to register at main reception on arrival. In order to open up the debate to as wide an audience as possible, Sheffield Wednesday will also be hosting a fans forum at Hillsborough on the evening of the AGM, starting at 7pm. Chairman, Lee Strafford, and manager, Brian Laws, will field questions from supporters in the 1867 Lounge with tickets being free of charge and allocated on a first come, first served basis. “As part of the AGM this year we want to give as many supporters as possible the opportunity to input their questions about the club and the fans forum at Hillsborough will give us this opportunity,” Strafford said. “Holding the AGM at a central location in the city, should give most shareholders the opportunity to attend but the evening question and answer session at Hillsborough will expand the debate much further than in previous years.” “Since our appointment to the board in December 2008, Nick Parker and myself have always advocated transparent and honest communication to all of our stakeholders and this is the reason behind our fans forum on the night of the AGM. We hope to see both venues packed out as we reflect on the previous 12 months and, more importantly look towards a stronger future for our club together.” Tickets for the fans forum on November 24 will be available from Wednesday, November 4 by phone and email. Full details of how to claim a ticket will be posted on the club’s official website tomorrow (Tuesday, November 3). Sheffield Wednesday have mailed details of the Annual Accounts and AGM to all shareholders and these should be received in the post in the coming days.
A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE
A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Brian Laws was quoted as admitting that he had to go “from Plan A to Plan F” leading up to Saturday’s clash with Bristol City. Plan F was forced upon him by injury and illness but it just proves that Plan A should have been scrapped weeks ago and shelved with other errors of judgement including Operation Barbarossa and the decision to put John and Edward through to the live shows. Wednesday have been known to eek out good performances in ‘back to the wall’ situations but this hard-earned point could’ve been a lot more and City chief Gary Johnson refreshingly admitted just that in his post-match interview. Recent off the field activity has been dominated by contract renewals and more significantly, contract refusals. It’s good to hear the much improved Jermaine Johnson has put pen to paper as he can be one of the most exciting players we have seen in S6 for a while and although he makes me kick the chair in front of me in equal measure to punching the air in front of me, he has got so much more to offer. Conversely, Richard Wood along with his agent Imre Varadi, has demanded to be the highest paid player at the club. Considering he isn’t the best player in his position called Richard currently on the books, I am delighted he has been laughed out of town and directed to the same storage area as Plan A.
Richard Wood - Show me the money
The Owls kicked off October with defeat at Derby County but hit back after the international break with a win at home against Coventry - goals coming from captain, Darren Purse, and Leon Clarke from the spot. An outstanding team performance from Brian Laws’ side the following Tuesday somehow ended in defeat against Preston North End. Michael Gray bagged his second goal of the season in that match with an expertly taken free kick. With the squad struck down with a virus ahead of the match against the Robins, Laws had to shuffle his pack meaning a total of 20 players were used throughout the month.
A switch around in defence saw Frank Simek return to the side at right back, with Richard Hinds and Lewis Buxton forming a new partnership in central defence - all giving an excellent account of themselves. Maybe your vote goes to Luke Varney who netted his third of the season at Ashton Gate to send the Owls back to S6 with a deserved point. UNLUCKY BLADES FALL TO GAFFER’S FOURTH STRAIGHT LOSS VERDICT The nation, through Sky TV, can see United’s luck is out. Newcastle received not one but two slices of good fortune in scoring the winning goal in Monday’s Championship clash. Kevin Nolan avoided a foul in robbing Kyle Walker of possession in the lead up to the second half goal, which took a wicked and significant deflection off Chris Morgan. Newcastle’s Steve Harper made countless saves, including an injurytime point-blank stop from Darius Henderson, and to emphasis the goalkeeper’s contribution, the travelling Geordies sung his name at the final whistle. Stewart and Davies returned for United, replacing Taylor and Little in the starting XI, and shortly after kick-off it became clear that boss Blackwell had tinkered with the positions. Davies partnered Morgan in central defence, Kilgallon lined up at left-back with Stewart ahead of him and Treacy switched to the right flank. There was a period of warm applause before kick-off in memory of ex Blade and Magpie Keith Kettleborough, who passed away earlier on the day of the game. Kicking towards the Kop in the first half, the Blades made a bright start. The visitors had to repel an early free-kick and then Evans put Henderson in the clear, but the big striker dragged his left-foot shot wide of the target. Newcastle’s first opportunity came from a Nolan break but Walker blocked from Carroll. The home side were quickly back on the offensive and Evans won the game’s first corner and then, on 14 minutes, Treacy fired over after Henderson laid back Stewart’s cross. The next chance fell to Quinn, from Henderson’s cross, but he also failed to find the target and then a Harper shot hit Evans. Taylor fired at Bennett, after Nolan was involved again, and Carroll headed Newcastle’s first corner over, whilst a couple of feisty challenges resulted in Morgan picking up the game’s first booking, on 31 minutes, for a foul on Carroll, who was the next to be shown a yellow card soon after. Taylor was also cautioned before the break, for stopping a ma-
Page 39
rauding Walker, who was soon back on defensive duty to stop Coloccini. The last two chances of a frantic first period, which the Blades shaded, saw Treacy fire at the visiting goalkeeper and then Evans shot just wide after holding off Coloccini. Taylor, already booked, was afforded the benefit of the doubt for a crude foul on Walker early in the second half, whilst Bennett flicked away a header from Nolan. The Blades goalkeeper was powerless when he saw a Carroll header strike the base of a post and the opening goal arrived on 54 minutes. Bringing the ball out of defence, Walker appeared to be fouled by Nolan, who made little if no contact with the ball. TAYLOR accepted the gift of being able to play on and was aided again as his long-range effort took a major deflection off Morgan and curled into the bottom corner. Walker, injured in the challenge which resulted in the goal, hobbled off and was replaced by France moments later. United attempted to force the visitors back, a Treacy cross was headed over by Stewart, who soon made way for Cotterill. An Evans free-kick, which was on target, was kicked away by Butt and, on 73 minutes, goalkeeper Harper did well to make himself big to block a Henderson effort. Blackwell then used his third and final change for the last 15 minutes with Camara taking over from Evans. United did most of the attacking in the closing stages but Harper looked assured. Treacy fired over with a first-time effort and the home side looked for a penalty when Ranger went through the back of Henderson in the final minute of normal time. Five additional minutes heralded extra hope but Treacy’s shot, from the back post, was blocked by the legs of Harper. Davies was now in attack as an auxiliary striker but Quinn’s shot struck a plethora of bodies and Henderson’s late header struck goalkeeper Harper... summing up United’s fortune.
BENNO BELIEVES LUCK UNBELIEVABLE WILL TURN Kevin Blackwell was almost at a loss to explain just how the Blades had lost against Newcastle after creating so many opportunities: “I suppose that’s life I’m afraid, because I thought we were magnificent tonight. To lose like that just about sums up how things have gone for us recently. “It was a foul on Kyle Walker but it wasn’t given and then the shot hits Chris Morgan and wrong foots Ian Bennett for the only goal. “I can’t criticise the lads because they played so well and I am very proud of them. ‘Benno’ hardly had a save to make but everything that can go wrong for us is going wrong.” The damage to Kyle Walker - following a tackle from Kevin Nolan which left the defender in a heap whilst the goal was scored - added to the incredible number of injuries that have decimated the squad: “Kyle has damaged ankle ligaments and he could be out for up to six weeks - that’s eleven serious injuries this season so far and I have never had anything like it in my career. “But I am hoping that by the end of the month we could have seven senior players back.”
After cruelly being beaten by a wicked deflection against Newcastle, goalkeeper Ian Bennett says the Blades are remaining upbeat as they desperately strive for that elusive victory. Ryan Taylor’s second-half strike cannoned of Chris Morgan to totally deceive Bennett and the experienced stopper says the rub of the green is proving the difference between success and failure at the moment: “It is very frustrating to lose to a goal like that. After they scored we were right in the game and had some good chances, but their keeper has pulled off two world-class saves late on. “That is the way things seem to be going in the last couple of months, but sooner or later things are going to drop our way and we have to make sure we keep doing things correctly to make that happen. “We have got some experienced players and the management tell us what we can and can’t do, but unfortunately decisions and deflections aren’t going in our favour. “The lads aren’t getting downhearted because we are working hard off the field to get out of this spell.” Bennett hopes the Bramall Lane faithful stick with the players as United look for their first win in eight matches in front of the live Sky cameras at Oakwell next Monday: “We want and need everyone to stay with us, because all we are striving for is that win, however it comes. “The Barnsley game will be tough; it is on their patch and both teams need three points so it promises to be a good game.”

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton
Those special nights at the Lane What ever happened to the magic of an evening fixture at beautiful down-town Bramall Lane? There was always something special about the atmosphere and intensity of a cold, crisp evening under the inquisitive glare of the floodlights, with a packed house full of anticipation for the contest ahead. In years gone by, our historic stadium has been the theatre for many a thrilling drama with numerous encounters coming readily to mind when looking to recall such special moments in the Blades’ recent history. Back in the 2002-03 campaign, Phil Jagielka’s thunderbolt against then Premiership Leeds United set up a
LOCAL SPORT NEWS
BLADES STADIUM PROPOSALS GET GO-AHEAD Proposals to further develop Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium were given the go-ahead this afternoon (2nd November). Councillors approved the Blades plans to extend the South Stand which are part of a continued longterm business strategy for the club. The decision is a further boost for Sheffield United’s support for Sheffield’s campaign to be a host city in a successful 2018 World Cup bid by England. The South Stand proposals see: An additional tier of seating which with the proposed re-development of the Kop would increase overall ground capacity to approximately 44,000. Purpose built exhibition and conference facilities within the stand, which will provide additional accommodation for the various community activities run by the Blades award-winning United Initiative team. New facilities for supporters, including corporate facilities Additional commercial and banqueting facilities. BladesPlayer subscribers can click here to see a 4 minute fly-through presentation. Executive director Jason Rockett said: “This is good news for Sheffield United and the city. Our focus remains firmly on achieving success on the pitch and the planned stadium developments will contribute to our continued long term strategy to drive off-the-field income for a sustainable business supporting further investment in the first team squad. “The next steps will be to firm up on design and delivery always ensuring we minimise potential disruption to supporters.” Strengthening the UEFA accredited ground’s position as one of the best in Yorkshire, the proposals have the added benefit of bringing the club in line with FIFA requirements at a time when it is supporting Sheffield’s bid to be host city in England’s application to stage the 2018 World Cup. Bramall Lane is already an international stadium, having successfully staged England under 21 fixtures. Earlier this year Sheffield United received the go-ahead from Sheffield City Council for the redevelopment of the Kop which will include additional seating, the removal of columns, a new concourse, new executive boxes, community and educational facilities, as well as improved services for disabled supporters to be built in the Evolution Corner Stand. momentous 2-1 triumph that sparked pandemonium, just like Michael Tonge’s double against Liverpool similarly saw an explosion of raucous celebration. And who can forget Michael Brown’s stunning volley against Sheffield Wednesday that saw the Blades record a 3-1 win in the same season. All were played under the mystical presence of the Lane floodlights, which most definitely added to the atmosphere of the occasion. While these nights seem a long distant past at present, Monday night’s game had the potential to replicate such experiences as the might of Newcastle United rolled into town. But while the results are not coming, any sort of consistent feel good factor is going to be hard to find. The fans tried in vain to muster an atmosphere in the first half, but it was always tinged with a nervous tension while ever the game was scoreless. Typically, our fears turned to reality as we fell foul of some very tough luck after dominating for long periods. There is a fight ahead for the Blades, for both the club and fans, but if we continue to apply ourselves with patience and determination, those special nights at Bramall Lane will surely be just around the corner.
