FINAL LINE UP ANNOUNCED FOR THE STRICTLY COME DANCING 2010 UK TOUR The producers of Strictly Come Dancing The Live Tour! are delighted to announce the final line up for the forthcoming UK arena tour, which will be arriving at Sheffield Arena between the 29th January and 1st of February next year. EastEnders star Ricky Groves and BBC Breakfast’s Chris Hollins complete the celebrity line up for the 2010 dance spectacular. Ricky and Chris will join fellow dancing celebrities from the current series Ali Bastian, Natalie Cassidy and Zoe Lucker, as well as previously announced stars Kelly Brook, Austin Healey and Mark Ramprakash. Ricky, who played unlucky in love car mechanic Gary Hobbs in the BBC soap EastEnders, swapped the streets of Walford for the dance floor where he received steady praise from the judges before leaving the competition in week 10. BBC Breakfast’s sport presenter Chris Hollins is thoroughly enjoying his time on the smash-hit BBC dance show. Partnered with Polish beauty Ola Jordan, he has received his highest score to date in week 8 for the Foxtrot. These eight celebrities will be joined by professional dancers Darren Bennett, Matthew Cutler, Brian Fortuna, James Jordan, Ola Jordan, Lilia Kopylova, Natalie Lowe, Kristina Rihanoff, Aliona Vilani and Ian Waite. The original line-up of judges; Len Goodman, Bruno Tolioni,

Arlene Philips and Craig RevelHorwood are also on hand with comments and scores for the celebrities and their partners, but it is audiences who have the final say each night. TV presenters Kate Thornton or Amanda Byram (check venues for details) will be keeping the judges and dancers in check as host of the show. Having entertained more than 500,000 Strictly fans over two sell-out tours, Strictly Come Dancing - The Live Tour! returns for a third year to dazzle UK Arena audiences in 2010. Audiences should prepare themselves for an array of beautiful costumes, skilful routines and a host of celebrity dancers. Stars from the hit BBC1 television show past and present will gather their gowns and dance shoes to become dance contestants, competing for the votes of the audiences in Arenas across the UK. They will be joined on the dates across January and February, by their world-class professional partners, performing intricate dance moves to fantastic live music. The five- week dance spectacular produced by Stage Entertainment UK and Phil McIntyre Entertainment in association with BBC Worldwide, will also travel to Liverpool’s Echo Arena, Birmingham’s LG Arena, the Nottingham Trent FM Arena, Sheffield Arena, London’s Wembley Arena, London’s O2 Arena,

the SECC in Glasgow and for the very first time, will visit Northern Ireland at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena. The tour culminates at the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena on Sunday 21st February. The seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing is currently being broadcast on BBC1 on Saturday nights. The series has already attracted over ten million viewers. The television format, also known as Dancing with the Stars, has been sold by BBC Worldwide to over 30 international broadcasters and has been named the world’s most successful reality TV format by the Guinness Book of World Records 2010. DINNER CORNER By David Hayes

Traditional Carvery With An Added Delightful Twist Nestled away in the lovely surroundings to the south west of Sheffield situated next to Parkhead cricket ground which makes for the perfect summer evening out watching the cricket and enjoying a cool drink. With the onset of winter it was the carvery we set our sights on and the warm inviting interior of the large Toby Parkhead pub. Having booked we were quickly shown to our table by a kindly courteous member of staff who explained fully the menu options. Traditional carvery has now been complimented with additional special nights served from 7pm. Onwards with a delightful twist. For £7.50 choose a dish and help yourself to the freshly carved beef, turkey or pork – I opted for a slice of all three and then eagerly helped myself to the large selection of vegetables, potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. On finishing you are entitled to help yourself to even more veggies

and roasties. Now the added special night bonus. Having finished your carvery opt for a fresh plate and help yourself to a choice of 3 different curries Chicken Makhani, Piri Piri Beef and mushroom and spinach curry. Being a self proclaimed curry expert I can proudly boast that the curries were full of flavour and suitably spiced, accompanied with mini poppadoms and bhajis. Each night offers a different accompanying special Monday BBQ, Tuesday Beef Hotpot Dumplings and Toad In The Hole, Wednesday & Thursday Curry Nights, Friday Classic Steak nights and Saturday Classic Lamb night. Although I did not participate The Toby also offers a good selection of starters and some belt busting deserts served with lashings of custard from a bottomless custard jug. The accompanying wine list is

fairly extensive and reasonably priced, I however opted for my usual lager from the large bar which also serves a good selection of bottled beers and draughts. Overall Verdict: Great value, nice food and particularly good service. Well worth a visit. Any negatives – An overly large restaurant can make for a less than intimate feel and it would be nice if the bar was separate to the restaurant. Be warned pace yourself – the food is very very generous and eagerly tucking in will soon fill you.

A weekly column written by International Medium, Author & Visionary Joanne Gregory

A WEEKLY COLUMN WRITTEN BY INTERNATIONAL MEDIUM, AUTHOR & VISIONARY JOANNE GREGORY

MANIFESTATION OF LOVE!

As Christmas approaches our thoughts turn to family and having our loved ones around us. It’s a busy family orientated time generally, but for far too many people it is a lonely time. Happiness is our birthright and if anything is getting in the way of that then we are out of sync with the universe. We can manifest anything we want into our lives; someone to love is no more difficult than anything else. Following the basic manifestation process you can access the creative energy and bring anything you want into your life. The manifestation process begins with a single thought or idea. In this case you would like someone to love and love you, or more friends and family. The thought is given energy dependant on the amount of time it is used. Think about it often. It attracts other energies vibrating on the same or similar frequency depending on its strength and nature (e.g. how much time the creator has spent thinking about it and whether it is a positive or negative vibration). People will start to gravitate towards you who are also looking for the same thing. These other energies give the creator some kind of feed back as to the possibility of a result (e.g. a similar experiment or breakthrough may become known to them or another creator offers a helping hand. You know what I mean a non-coincidence happens just at the right time). You’ll be asked out or told how of good places to meet someone. You’ll find like minded people and possible candidates for your affections. The creator fuelled by the recent confirmation that he/she is on the right track gives it a great deal of his/her thinking time. You start to see meeting someone is really possible which starts your belief system off. He/she ‘imagines’ the outcome in different scenarios but he/she always ‘imagines’ success. Related feelings fuel and drive him/her. Imagining what you would do with your new partner gives detail to the creative force of what you would really like therefore refining your search. The energy around the thought is now so vast and the thought itself is so huge that it is now more of a ‘belief’. We base our beliefs on things that appear ‘real’ to us. That is, things we can see and hear or are told over and over again. (E.g. you believe that grass is green, but who says so? Someone, somewhere, in the beginning, made a decision that the

colour of grass would be called green. You might think this is a silly thing to say but the point I’m trying to make is we can believe things to be true just because we’ve been told enough times that they are. After all it may be possible that when I see green it is different to what you see.) The vibration then matches the belief and it becomes a reality. Every possible matching vibration is attracted to it and the desired result is achieved. The thought or idea has become solid or we have fixed our attention on random subatomic particles and set them into the pattern we expected to achieve. Before you know it you are inundated with offers and invitations and the right person is already around ready for you to get close. This process can be applied to anything to start it happening. It takes just 16 seconds of thought directed energy for something to begin to manifest. The more time you concentrate on something the greater it will become and will arrive quicker. There are also a couple more factors that help when manifesting something new into our lives. Everything within the universe vibrates, the frequency with which it vibrates determines how it looks, feels and behaves. Good things generally vibrate on a fairly high frequency and not so good on a lower one. To speed up your manifestation it is helpful if you are vibrating at a frequency as near as possible to the frequency of the creative energy that brings things into being. The creative force vibrates at a very high frequency so, in order to communicate clearly with it; you have to instigate an increase in your vibe too. The way to do this is to think of something that makes you feel good and then start sending energy through thought to your new love life. Imagine someone you already love, a baby’s gummy smile, a funny story, listen to upbeat sings and sing along, a favourite happy memory, in fact anything that makes you feel good and will lift your vibration. Also remember your world is built around your belief system. You don’t have to know how you will meet your soul mate you just have to want and believe it to be possible. After all, the universe can do absolutely anything; your love life is small fry. So it takes just 16 seconds to begin the process towards love and a love filled Christmas, what are you waiting for?

Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th Signing a contract makes an agreement official, which makes you nervous. You’re the sort of person who doesn’t like to be confined by a lot of legal formalities. Unfortunately, you need to make some official promises if you’re going to move up the ladder of success. Pay no attention to a nagging fear you won’t be able to fulfil your obligations. You’ll pass this test with flying colours, if you keep your nose to the grindstone. Take some deep breaths and stay calm. TAURUS April 21st - May 21st You could finally receive money you’ve been expected for some time. Beware of spending it all in one place. If you’re careful, you can pay your bills and have a little left over for savings. Resist the urge to buy expensive luxury items, especially on credit. If you’re patient, you’ll be able to pay cash for such indulgences. It’s all a matter of sticking to a budget. If you’re not happy with your salary, this would be a great time to negotiate a pay raise. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st You’ll be in great demand this week, both personally and professionally. This is a great time to step out of your comfort zone. You’ve been blessed with a multitude of talents. If you feel as if you’ve been thrust into a pigeonhole, work your way out of it. Change your look, find a different job or team up with an unlikely partner. Don’t tangle with an irritable authority figure. They are looking for an excuse to vent their anger on an innocent victim. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Burying your head in the sand is no longer an option. You’ll be forced to face some painful truths regarding a female friend, relative or neighbour. Although it pains you to admit this woman took advantage of you, there’s no other conclusion to draw. Console yourself with hard work. Exercising outdoors can also relieve anxiety. Staying cooped up inside can drive you stir crazy. An attentive admirer will try to seduce you. Be willing to take the bait. LEO July 24th - August 23rd A friendship could be coming apart at the seams, and there’s nothing you can do. It’s better to cut ties than force a relationship that has lost its purpose. Although such behaviour runs contrary to your loyal nature, you need to break things off, even at the risk of seeming heartless. The person in question has betrayed you in more ways than one. By getting out of their path, you’ll avoid further disaster. Resist the urge to give them money as a guilt offering. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd You could finally get word regarding a job or promotion. Don’t be surprised if you’re given a lot more responsibilities in the days ahead. Fortunately, a loved one is poised to help you make this transition. It’s a little nerve wracking for a shy person like you to be in the spotlight. With a little practice you’ll come to enjoy the publicity. Your finances are about to improve. Be sure to put a percentage of your earnings into savings. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd A legal decision could be rendered, allowing you to move forward with career plans. Although you may not like the result, at least you won’t be kept awake worrying and waiting for the verdict. Besides, bigger and better opportunities await you. It looks as if you’ll be able to make use of your artistic talent in your next job. Teaching students how to write, paint or play music will give you a new lease on life. It could also put you on the road to romance. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd You may have to cancel personal plans at the last minute, which makes you really angry. You’ve been looking forward to this outing for some time, but a financial shortage requires you to find more work. A job opportunity related to teaching or writing is worth taking, even if it puts a crimp in your schedule. Fortunately, a relative or roommate is willing to help with household responsibilities. Enlist their aid with taking care of a pet, child or chores.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st An engagement, marriage or business agreement changes the course of your life. Two heads are better than one this week. Don’t try to undertake a difficult task all by yourself. Relations with a neighbour or relative will be improved if you extend an olive branch. The two of you have a lot more in common than you realise. A relative or roommate’s erratic behaviour is getting on your nerves. You need to establish some firm guidelines so these outbursts won’t continue. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th A tough work assignment comes to an end, leaving you more time for your personal life. Plan to visit a secret hideaway with your beloved. If you’re single, you could meet someone special at a religious, cultural or educational institution. Your new lover could make a lot more money than you. This financial discrepancy will create a feeling of inequity. Prepare to confront how your income affects your self worth. The answer may surprise you. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th A creative project comes to fruition, prompting you to look around for the next big opportunity. Establishing a steady routine should be your first order of business. Although it pains you to admit it, you could benefit from a steady job. This means you’ll have to spend less time on pleasurable pursuits and devote more energy to work. An optimistic attitude is the key to landing a decent position. Project an upbeat attitude when going on interviews. PISCES February 20th - March 20th It’s time to leave a difficult domestic situation behind. Moving to a new place, finding a different roommate or selling a property are among the possibilities. This change will result in an emotional wrench, but that can’t be helped. Find a healthy outlet for your frustrations. Your studies may take you away from the social scene, but that may be a good thing. Solitary pursuits make you more self sufficient. WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL NOT TO BE MISSED Sheffield is really fortunate insomuch as it has one of only three specialist cancer hospitals in the UK. At one time or another one in three of us will be touched by cancer and the care and support provide by Weston Park is world class. On Sunday December 6th there is a fund raising concert which is a Christmas Concert for all the Family starting at 2pm at Sheffield Cathedral. Those of you that would enjoy a truly special concert that the whole family can attend should really get along to this one. The reason for hosting it at the Cathedral is to give it a real sense of Christmas and the line up is absolutely fantastic. The concert will feature

Stannington Brass Band, The Cathedral Singers, Stephanie Kings Stars of the Future and special guest John Reilly of Boy on a Dolphin and Acoustic Angels fame. Everyone is working and rehearsing to make this the best start to Christmas for everyone. Having been involved in this I have had the pleasure of seeing and hearing some of the preparation and I can inform everyone that they are in for a real treat. Stannington Band, Sheffield’s only championship brass band, are rehearsing some great festive music and they will also be accompanying John Reilly in 3 specially commissioned arrangements. The first time Stannington and John performed together

was in front of a packed City Hall and the reaction from the audience was electric as they rose to their feet to give a standing ovation. They will be performing 3 songs together including a the finale Greg Lake’s Christmas standard ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’. Next door to The Mercury offices we have been listening to Stephanie King putting her young proteges through their paces and rehearsing new Christmas material for the concert. They’re really working hard and again I can assure you that their part of the concert will be tremendous. With the greatest respect to our readers I suspect that not many of you have heard the choir at Sheffield Cathedral.

The men of the choir, under the direction of Neil Taylor, Master of the Music will be providing musical food for the soul at this special time of year. Neil is a good friend of mine and the music at Sheffield Cathedral is as good as any Cathedral in the UK. All in all you have a fantastic and important cause, a wonderful venue, a great seasonal programme of music which gives everyone the opportunity to get Christmas started and help Weston Park. Tickets are £8 for adults, £4 for concessions and family tickets at £16 for 2 adults and 2 concessions. You can phone 0114 276 3701 to book yours in advance and collect them at the door.

ARTISTE CANCELLATIONS

A QUESTION OF SPORT The steel city of Sheffield has seen some pretty fierce rivalry on the football field – now Kevin Blackwell and Brian Laws are going to play out a battle of the minds. The two managers have agreed to take part in a special charity version of the long running quiz A Question of Sport, organised by BBC Radio Sheffield. They’ll be joined by BBC Radio Sheffield’s Paul Walker and Seth Bennett, plus two other sporting guests. Quizmaster will be Look North’s Harry Gration. All money raised will go towards the BBC Sheffield Kids’ Scanner Appeal for the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield. A Question of South Yorkshire Sport takes place at the Pennine Lecture Theatre at Sheffield Hallam University on Thursday, December 10. Tickets are free but a donation

of at least £5 is being requested per ticket. Doors open at 7.30pm for a recording that starts at 8.15pm and the entire show will be broadcast on BBC Radio Sheffield the following weekend, on Sunday December 13 at 1pm. To get your tickets you need to call in to reception at BBC Radio Sheffield. Or write to the station at 54 Shoreham St, Sheffield with your ticket request, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope. So far BBC Radio Sheffield has raised more than £180,000 for a new CT Scanner, but it needs to hit a target of £500,000 by the end of March next year. Station Editor Hannah Kennedy said: “This promises to be a great night out. We all know about the rivalry between the two managers on the football field, it’ll be interesting to see how they cope on questions of sport. “I’d like to thank them both for giving up their time to take part in this event and hopefully raise a lot of money for our kids’ scanner appeal.”

at giving one hundred percent effort and totally enjoying being on stage. I personally would like to say a big thank you to these guys because we had my nephew with us along with the whole of Steeler, another local rock band, to wave him off as he goes to Afghanistan with the Yorkshire Regiment next Sunday and these guys made a big fuss of him. Steeler are just putting a gig together for Help the Heroes on the 24th of Febuary at the Thurnscoe Coronation club and along with Steeler, Coyote may appear if they can confirm dates with agent. The Rakkiteers are confirmed but these guys are looking to put a massive night together YORKSHIRE ROCKS FOR THE YORKSHIRE REGIMENTS so any bands or artistes willing to give time up and you don’t need your equipment as Steeler will use their PS etc please email tommishaun@aol.com. Sunday we were off to see the family BEARDSMITH at Monk Bretton Barnsley. This club is a small but very clean club it was £2 to get in all ticket and sold out, what a talented bunch this lot are. Lead from the back of the stage by Norman, the dad, but this family just go from strength to strength with endless talent and proper live music. Some bands should take note and be ashamed as these are young kids with bags of talent .The campaign for 2010 should be bring back live music not mimed music. Derek

discovered that that it was not an athletics event, but a series of programmes where various mediums could get in touch with your departed friends and relatives. Handy if one’s recently departed was the only one who knew the combination to the floor safe or where the garage key was kept. The medium I watched was called John Edward, an internationally renowned psychic medium, and on the basis that he could be no worse than the X Factor twins John and Edward, I decided to give it a go. It was fascinating to say the least, and there has to be something in it. He was not asking general questions, but specifics such as ‘who hung himself from a tree?’ and ‘who put marmalade on kippers?’ Now unless this harmless looking ninety odd year old woman was a plant, there has to be an element of truth in the fact that when we leave this mortal place, we go somewhere else. I am coming round to the theory of incarnation and want to come back as a dog. (no snide remarks please), preferably one of mine, who have fresh lamb’s liver cooked for them every morning, can sleep whenever they want, never get a bill through the letter box and can freely copulate in the street with whoever they want with no fear of offending

anyone, and if they happen to impregnate a bitch, there is no pup support agency trying to bleed them dry. When people describe an unfortunate person as ‘having had a dog’s life’ I am at a loss to understand why that is supposed to be so bad. My pal got a very cool reception while helping out at a free soup kitchen in London last week, just for saying to the slower diners ‘hurry up, some of us have got homes to go to’ I have no travels to report on this week as I have been laid up with a trapped nerve in my neck. I intend to remedy this with a trip to the chiropractor. I visited one ten years ago with a similar problem and have never looked back since. The pain, I am reliably informed by a young mother who has had a similar trapped nerve is akin to childbirth, and I am therefore looking for a bit of sympathy from the female gender. We are now in December, how this year has flown, and the eighteenth is of special significance for two reasons. It is exactly two years ago that I had my bad fall from which I have still not recovered, and three years have elapsed on that date since something that is instrumental to my making serious changes to my last will and testament, which I shall be doing while I am (supposedly) of sound mind.

MURDER, HE JOKED It’s a stockbroker’s first day in prison and on meeting his psychotic-looking cell mate, when he notices how scared the stockbroker looks. I’m in for a white-collar crime, too. “Oh, really?” says the stockbroker, sighing with relief. Yes,” says the cellmate, “I killed a vicar.” ROUND THE BEND A man is speeding down a narrow mountain road, when a woman comes hurtling round the corner. He swerves to avoid her, but as she passes she leans out the window and screams ‘PIG!’ Astonished, the man turns and yells back, ‘B**CH!’ as he reaches the bend and crashes into a pig.

CRAVE DIGGERS! Back in a simpler times there was no indie, no emo, no nurave. No post-this, post-that, post-whatever the hell else. There was just riff-laden, ballsy rock ‘n’ roll; huge songs, life-changing gigs and a whole world of noisy, gutsy fun that took people out of their dreary everyday lives and made them feel truly special. It’s from this effervescent historical well that the UK’s most charismatic young band draw their inspirations. But this is no retro pastiche, these boys are young, hungry and bringing classic rock songwriting flailing and wailing into the 21st century. It’s the Foo Fighters and AC/DC in a booze-fuelled riff showdown. It’s Tom Petty and Aerosmith in a bare-knuckle dust up over who’s got the bigger hooks. It’s U2 and Guns N’ Roses wrestling for stadium supremacy. Put simply: it’s The Crave. This year alone The Crave have toured the UK and Europe with the likes of Shinedown, Buckcherry, Hinder, Theory Of A Deadman, Hot Leg and are about to embark upon a UK stadium tour with legends Deep Purple (Impressive). The past 3 years have seen The Crave complete 3 tours of the US including shows at the Harley Davidson 105th Anniversary alongside Bruce Springsteen and the Foo Fighters, the Brit Bus tour which took them 5000 miles across the country on an English double decker bus and a headlining show at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel Casino on Halloween night. Undeterred by the music industry’s obsession with all things ‘indie’, The Crave decided to record tracks for their debut ‘High’ EP in Brighton. Mark Flannery (who has worked alongside acts such as Sheffield’s Def Leppard, U2 and Depeche Mode amongst many others) saw the talent in this young band and co-produced the first tracks with frontman Ryan Burnett and mixing maestro Matt Hyde for the record over a few weeks. The Crave combine all the fantastic songwriting elements, infectious melodies, superb harmonies and huge choruses of their peers, but make it sound both thrilling and vibrant in a thoroughly modern style. The debut album is set for release January 2010. But before that check out what all the fuss is about when they hit the boards at the Corporation on the 3rd. Rock On!

MR BROWN STONE(D)! Most people really don’t need an Introduction to Ian Brown, but for those that do here goes; Ian’s first band The Patrol was short lived, in which he played bass. He then went on to become the major lyrical influence in the Stone Roses’ earliest work circa Garage Flower, before the classic Squire/Brown partnership. He took a lot of criticism for his voice, yet it has become one of the most imitated in the years since his emergence. He contributed to only 3 songs on the “Roses” Second Coming Album (Daybreak, Straight to The Man, and Begging You). He points to John’s excessiveness in the Second Coming years as one of the main reasons for the group’s downfall. However, ignoring his own lethargy just as much. Had John not come up with the goods, the Roses’ hiatus would have reached well...maybe never! Having chosen to continue on as The Stone Roses after John’s departure, it all finished disastrously at the Reading Festival in 1996. He headlined Sunday night’s performance, having been out with former band member Cressa the night before, smoking weed, which ruined his voice for the gig. Brown would argue that he was in a no-win situation concerning that gig though. Speaking to Jo Whiley: “A girl’s told me that she had been at the meeting with the NME on the Friday, and the man’s told her: “We bury him this weekend.” So it didn’t matter to me how I performed.” He described the music business as “The filthiest business in the universe”, and he closed the book once and for all on The Stone Roses. Since then Ian Brown has had a very successful solo career, and is now regarded as English “Rock Royalty” (So much for the press eh? Ian) and you can catch the rock legend live in Sheffield at the O2 Academy on the 8th. Ian Brown: O2 Academy, Tuesday 8th December, Door time: 7.00pm, Show time: TBC

Codeine Velvet Club is a new musical project between Jon Lawler - alias Jon Fratelli of The Fratellis and singer/songwriter Lou Hickey. It celebrates a shared love of ‘60s girl-boy duets, dramatic orchestral pop, and dark post-war Hollywood and Las Vegas romanticism (make of that what you will!) Following a whirlwind 3 years of touring, Jon decided to take a well-earned breather by taking his family and friends on a beach holiday abroad. Restless and itching to get back to work, he flew home after just a few days. It was on his return that he seized on the opportunity to help write a track for Lou Hickey’s album, a project funded by a grant from the Scottish Arts Council. ‘Vanity Kills’, as it came to be titled, emerged as a swaying, jazzy, big-band duet, tinged with noir-ish menace and shades of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s waspish 1960s guygal duelling. Jon & Lou met up at a studio and wrote [new single] ‘Vanity Kills’, Says Lou - “But Jon thought it was too good for my album, so he decided it should be the beginning of a whole new venture. Which suited me fine.” Sounding like soundtrack composer John Barry playing in a rock ‘n roll band, the album began to fall into place early this year, with the taut, shimmering album opener ‘Hollywood’, the Mariachi-inflected ‘Time’, and the widescreen, cinematic sweep of ‘Nevada’, whose elegant orchestral score was written by Belle & Sebastian’s Mick Cooke. There was room for some rockers too: the carousing ‘Little Sister’, and ‘I Would Send You Roses’, a track Jon had originally written for Roger Daltrey (blimey!). The band head out on tour and will be playing a show at the Leadmill on the 6th December. Sounds intriguing. YEAH? YEAH YEAH!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have added a final date to their UK tour for November and December and thankfully it’s in our very own back garden, down at the Academy on Monday the 7th. If winter feels a million miles

away, fear not as main stage appearances at Reading and Leeds are still to come, following spectacular eyeball-bouncing, headdress-shaking performances at Glastonbury, T in The Park and Oxegen. The iconic, graceful and delirious Karen O is Queen of the Festivals, stealing the show, our hearts, and the front-pages. The New York three-piece, completed by Nick Zinner (guitar, synths) and Brian Chase (drums), released their latest album It’s Blitz! in April – among many glowing verdicts it was described as “the alternative pop album of the decade”

by Spin magazine and “a strong contender for album of the year” by The Times . Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sheffield O2 Academy - Tickets £20 - www.o2academysheffield. co.uk

reviews by presley Artist: Muse Single: Underdisclosed Desires Released: Mon 7th December

Even though we here at Drag reviewed their last single ‘Uprising’ (you know, the one with the Billy Idol White Wedding rip off) we had to review this follow up too for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the last single was so damn good! And Secondly, so is this one! Muse have started to be a bit more commercial, Having established themselves they were always great but as the hardest working AC/DC a bit too muso for a lot of tribute in the UK, Live/Wire bring a unique show to the stage people. Artist: Depeche Mode Single: Fragile Tension Released: Mon 7th December

To start off, I have to admit I’m a huge lover of most things Depeche. There’s been the odd let down, but when a career spans three decades there’s gonna be, the standard can’t be up there constantly. When their latest album ‘Sounds Of The Universe’ came out earlier this year I liked it but found it to be a bit one-dimensional, especially in a lot of the sounds they were using. But sometimes an album that is a bit samey can after many plays enter your consciousness and end up being a much better album than you previously thought. To confuse matters here, I’m nearly at that point, but I can’t quite fully get there. This is the second single from that album, the first ‘Wrong’ didn’t do great sales in this country sadly but maybe this one will fair better. They’ve got the advantage of touring the UK this week now that frontman Dave Gahan is over his fairly serious illness. It’s a fast full on electronic number, none of Martin Gore’s guitar on this. I like it a lot, but it’s not a massive song. What I think Depeche are able to do though is make this song huge in the live arena. I can see the tens of thousands of arms waving in unison from side to side to this song just as much as the fans do to their classic material. This single is actually paired with ‘Hole To Feed’ which is more a tribal drumming backing track with a darker Dave Gahan vocal, but this song doesn’t really cut it and is a bit lame although not terrible. Try and go see them live, that’s where they really excel.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE WEEK 14

Whilst last weeks telephone troubles didn’t get the better of the ice hockey commentary they did continue into this week and were the beating of FA Cup football. The Rotherham United FC match at Don Valley was, due to fundraising and volunteers other commitments, going to be the last of our coverage for 2009 anyway but it was not to be. Ice Hockey will continue through December as games return to the Sheffield Arena and then football coverage should be restored at the beginning of 2010. We are delighted to have been invited to record the Schools Christmas Concert at the Rotherham Minster next week. Bringing together a host of talented young musicians from across Rotherham the concert raises money for local charities. We will be recording the concert to play out in our Friday evening In Concert slot the following week. We decided this week to enter

the national Hospital Radio Awards for the first time. For many years we have debated about entry and this year we have the equipment which allows us to complete the audio compilation piece for submission. There are nine categories of awards, with Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in each. We have decided to enter the Special Event category this year with our coverage of Remembrance Sunday from Rotherham Minster and Cenotaph. Our submission will be sent off this week then it’s a long wait until mid-January until the shortlisted 10 nominees are revealed, then a further wait until March for the top three to be announced at the Hospital Broadcasting Association spring conference. Fingers crossed! It might be a bit early for New Year resolutions but it’s certainly time to be thinking about what challenge you might pose yourself for 2010. How about to use some of your free time for the good of others? Maybe you could tear yourself away from the TV for an evening a week to offer some comfort to people in hospital? Or perhaps the void that was Christmas shopping time on Saturday afternoons could be put to charitable use? Radio Nightingale is looking for new volunteers to assist in all areas of the station. No previous experience is neces-

sary, the amount of time you give is completely up to you, as is the areas of work you get involved in. It could be on-air but equally valuable are people who want to visit the wards to collect patients requests or assist at fundraising events. There are specific vacancies we are looking to fill at the moment listed below however people with other talents to offer are equally welcome so please do contact us to discuss where you could fit in. You never know you might enjoy it so much, volunteering might be a New Year resolution you keep to!

their name in the hat but their place in the third round is yet to be decided after being held 2-2 at Don Valley by Luton Town. Adam Le Fondre and Stephen Brogan cancelled out Tom Craddock’s penalty, but a goal by substitute Mark Nwokeji was enough to claim a draw for the Blue Square Premier side. Ronnie Moore was forced into two changes for the game with Brogan and Ryan Taylor replacing the injured Kevin Ellison, and cup-tied Adam Rundle. It was the returning Brogan who went close early on. His free-kick from all of 30 yards almost catching Kevin Pilkington unaware, but the ball went narrowly over. The Millers piled on the early pressure and went close again on five minutes when Tom Pope rose highest from Nicky Law’s corner, but he couldn’t get the necessary connection on the ball and it drifted wide. The lively Pope was in the thick of it again soon after, pouncing on a loose ball on the edge of the area, unfortunately his snapshot was just over before turning provider for Taylor who couldn’t quite connect with the cross. Gary Roberts, making his second start for the Millers, showed encouraging signs early on, and his pinpoint ball to the left found Brogan whose right footed shot was comfortable for the experienced Pilkington. The Hatters took an unexpected lead on 19 minutes with their first meaningful attack. A breakaway resulted in Claude Gnapka receiving the ball on the right hand side of the area where he was brought down by Millers left-back Andy Nicholas. Craddock stepped up and sent Andy Warrington the wrong way and give the advantage to the Blue Square outfit. The Millers almost hit back immediately, Roberts again taking

nie Moore was very frustrated at his side’s inability to hold onto the lead following the Millers 2-2 draw against Luton in the F.A Cup second round. The Millers came from a goal behind to take a 2-1 lead at the Don Valley Stadium following goals from Adam Le Fondre and Stephen Brogan; however a late goal from Luton substitute Mark Nwokeji took the game to a replay. “Good sides don’t concede goals like that,” said Moore. “We did the right thing going on and trying to get another but we weren’t patient enough. We went too gung-ho and began chasing it. “If you play square balls like that you’re always going to be in trouble. It was a silly ball to play, they’ve broke against us three against two and the lad’s got lucky as it’s gone through Fenton’s legs. He couldn’t really miss could he?” Moore was also unhappy with the manner of the Hatters first goal, which came from the penalty spot following a tackle by Andy Nicholas on Claude Gnapka: “The penalty was unbelievable, how naïve to get done like that,” added Moore. “But both goals I thought were naïve from our point. We’ve gifted them the two goals through bad decision making.” Moore believed his side deserved to go through to the draw for the third round however, and bemoaned the extra game his side must now play: “That’s the frustrating thing for me, at 2-1 I thought we were cruising. At that point I thought there was only going to be one winner. I was comfortable, the most comfortable I’ve been on the dugout since I’ve been here actually. “We’re disappointed because we’ve drawn. We’re unbeaten in six games now but I’m disappointed and the players are disappointed that we’ve not won the game. “We’ve got to go on and do it the hard way now. It’s a game we could do without as it will take that extra bit out of us physically.”

Ian Sharps had a header cleared off the line on the half hour, and Pope was flagged offside after Roberts had put him one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The fourth official indicated two additional minutes, and the Millers took advantage, when Taylor fed Pope on the right, he found space to cross into the area where Le Fondre was waiting to claim his second goal of the competition just seconds before half-time. The Millers carried the momentum in the second half, and Sharps’ header was deflected just wide from a Law corner. After a scrappy period following half-time the Millers took the lead just after the hour. Roberts’ cross from the byline was headed home by Brogan on his return to the side. They almost made it 3-1 six minutes later when Taylor cut in from the right again, but his effort was blazed wide. On 73 minutes, an uncharacteristic error by the impressive Roberts gifted possession to the visitors, substitute Nwokeji was put through on goal and he beat Warrington to level the scores. The Millers then had a strong shout for a penalty as Law’s cross appeared to be blocked by the arm of Alan White. Referee Tierney waved away the protests and the Millers had to settle for a corner. Rotherham had the final chance of the game when Le Fondre and Pope combined before laying off to Danny Harrison who shot wide from 18 yards. Three minutes were added on, but the Millers couldn’t make the breakthrough, meaning that this second round tie will be decided at Kenilworth Road.

The second period saw Bolzano take the lead with two goals, and Talbot tied the game with his second goal at 33:47. A scoreless third period saw the two teams take the game to overtime, and with neither team managing to score in overtime, the game went to penalties. Sheffield Wednesday suffered their heaviest home defeat of the season on Saturday as promotion hopefuls West Brom breezed past a tame Owls challenge. A scintillating first half performance by the Baggies swept SWFC aside as Simon Cox’s brace and a Jerome Thomas strike made sure the points were comfortably stored in the travel bag. Former Owls ace Chris Brunt - influential throughout on his return to Hillsborough - struck a late goal to round off a comprehensive victory. Wednesday made one change from the side the posted a point at Ipswich last Saturday. Leon Clarke started up front in place of Luke Varney, who dropped down to the bench. New loanee duo Warren Feeney and Tom Soares were both named as substitutes. The Owls were out of the traps apace, unaware of the storm to follow, with Marcus Tudgay testing Scott Carson straight from the kick-off. The former Owls loanee goalkeeper saved comfortably before Lee Grant twice showed his mettle at the other end; firstly tipping Luke Moore’s shot on the turn over and then diving low to divert a daisycutter from Brunt. Thomas took a tumble in the area on eight minutes after a race for the ball with Grant but referee Eddie Ilderton waved away Baggies appeals for a penalty. That hardly matter to Albion, though, as they deservedly took the lead in the 23rd minute. Graham Dorrons swung a corner over right into the danger zone and Cox was on hand to volley home his fourth goal of the season. The Owls responded with James O’Connor sending a looping shot into Carson’s midriff but that was a rare foray upfield by Wednesday as WBA largely had control of the game. And the visitors’ superiority was underlined on the half-hour mark as they doubled their lead. Brunt took a pass down the left from Thomas into his stride and drilled a low cross to the back post,

where Cox was on hand to fire into the back of the Kop net from close range. Brunt was at the hub again two minutes later, picking out Moore with a clever through-ball but the latter blasted high over the crossbar. Wednesday were then fortunate not to concede a penalty when Tommy Spurr clattered into Cox as the Midlanders continued their dominance. But another goal was on the cards and duly arrived seven minutes before the break, when Thomas went on the overlap before taking a pass from Cox and shooting hard and low across Grant to all but kill off what had rapidly developed into a one-sided contest. Owls boss Brian Laws made a change before half time with Spurr making way for Mark Beevers; Lewis Buxton switched across to the left back berth. New signing Soares came on for Jermaine Johnson at the interval as Wednesday desperately needed a spark. Varney entered the fray for Marcus Tudgay and although the Owls’ drive improved in the early throes, the final ball was lacking and they could have gone further behind on 56 minutes when Albion broke on the counter and Moore’s well-struck effort whistled narrowly wide. Cox escaped down the left flank and cut inside before flicking just wide and the former Swindon man went closer still nine minutes from time with a rasping drive from distance that only just missed the target. Much as they tried, the Owls could not find a way through, leaving Brunt to inevitably strike the final blow on 84 minutes with a low drive across Grant. Owls: Grant, Simek, Hinds, Buxton, Spurr (Beevers 39), Gray, O’Connor, Potter, Johnson (Soares 46), Clarke, Tudgay (Varney 55)

LAWS BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws admitted that his team let the supporters down on Saturday, after crashing to a 4-0 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion. “Quite simply, that wasn’t good enough,” the Owls boss said. “We played a top team and to get a result against a top team you have to turn up; you have to be at the races; you have to play to your potential and at your maximum because if you don’t that’s what you get. “We let ourselves down and we let the supporters down. It was pretty even in the first 20 minutes but the warning signs were there. We have been working hard to make sure we don’t concede from set plays and you should never allow any team to score with a volley inside the six-yard box. That was unacceptable and it proved to be the turning point in the game. They then got into their stride and made life very difficult for us but we cannot carry anybody and I have to say none of my players came out of the match with any credit today. “After the first goal we were all at sea; passes were going astray and we couldn’t find any rhythm. I am bitterly disappointed, very angry and we have to turn the corner. We were booed off the pitch at half

time and rightly so. “The second half could not be described as anything other than ‘poor’. We have been creating chances in recent games but today we struggled in that respect and that is very disappointing. It wasn’t just the strikers or midfield players who played badly today though it was everyone. “More than anything, the basics let us down today. Passes of five yards and ten yards were going astray and if you’re not keeping the ball against a team like West Brom then they are going to hurt you. “If the players go over the white line and give their all then nobody can have any complaints but today none of them could come back in saying they have done their best so they have to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. I have to find a way of getting some confidence back into the squad of players I have as quickly as possible but that’s not going to happen if I hammer them every day of next week before we play our next game. We have to get the organisational structure right and I will be working morning, noon and night to make sure we get that right. “I have sympathy for our supporters after that performance and all I can say is that we will be out there working as hard as possible on the training ground to get things right and make sure they do not drop below the standards of professionalism that we expect,” Laws concluded.

A VIEW HARD WORK THE FROM THE ANSWER TERRACE James O’Connor says that a hard week on the training ground will help put right the wrongs that Wednesday suffered at the hands of West Brom on Saturday. The promotion-chasing Baggies proved a cut above at Hillsborough as the Owl slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season. And midfield man O’Connor anticipates a tough week at Middlewood Road before Wednesday look to bounce back against Reading next weekend. He told Wednesday Player: “It’s no good feeling sorry for ourselves, we have to keep believing in ourselves and stick together. We will work hard in training and try to put things right. “On the day, they played well and we were poor. West Brom have just come down from the Premiership, they are a very strong team and we saw that first hand.” Wednesday have slipped to 19th place in the table but O’Connor insists there is no cause for panic given the current stage of proceedings. He added: “We are still in November, there is a long way to go yet. But, of course, we have to start proving we are a better side than we are at the moment. “We will work hard in training and look to come out all guns blazing next Saturday against Reading.”

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Bunsen Bob

Oh dear. From tentatively looking over our shoulders before Saturday’s pounding we are now jogging backwards and anybody who has tried that knows how hard it is. The next four games before Christmas will probably indicate whether another relagation battle is ahead of us or whether we will continue to bob along and continue to wait for an investor. Contrary to the somewhat negative vibes that this column has generated over the last few weeks I am actually a relatively optimisitc Wednesdayite and therefore I think we’ll serve up some gritty if not outstanding performances and put some points on the board over the couple of weeks. Reading aren’t the force they have been over the last few years and hopefully we’ll provide a backlash this Saturday that will provide the launchpad for a good run. A local derby against Donny will inject some spice into proceedings and I think we’ll sneak a win and the Walkers Stadium has been a good ground for us over the last few years. Swansea will obviously provide a tough test but the Welsh have struggled at Hillsborough and long may that continue. I’m putting my neck on the line and saying we’ll loot 10 points from the next 4 games and have ourselves a merry little Christmas. Isn’t optimism, however blind, a wonderful thing?

HENDERSON HAT TRICK HENDO IS BRINGS HOMEdefence THE POINTS Darius Henderson smashed found Johnson but home a hat-trick - including a last-gasp winner - in a thrilling encounter at Ashton Gate on Saturday. It looked as though United had surrendered a 2-0 lead when Alvaro Saborio netted a leveller in injury-time but Henderson secured hero status with a winner after the five minutes of added time had elapsed. The goal not only secured three points but also ended an 11-month unbeaten home record for City. Goalkeeper Ikeme was handed his debut after signing on loan from Wolves, whilst chief Blackwell made two other changes with Montgomery and Henderson returning. Bunn, Camara and Evans were the players to make way with the latter reportedly struggling for full fitness due to a midweek injury problem. There was no place in the 18 for new loan defender Kallio with United up to the loan limit of five in the matchday squad. The personnel selected suggested a 4-5-1 formation and that proved to be the case in the initial exchanges with Ward and Quinn supporting Henderson from the wide areas and Williamson the most advanced of the central midfielders. City applied the early pressure, particularly down their right flank, but they were limited to a number of long range efforts. Haynes twice fired wide and Elliott half volleyed into the arms of Ikeme. Williamson, Ward and Walker combined but United’s first foray into the home box came to nothing. Henderson’s first timer was blocked by Hartley, whilst, on 19 minutes, a neat move saw Quinn’s delivery headed down and into the path of Ward, whose left-footed effort was held at the second attempt by Gerken. United then won three corners on the bounce before City were hit with a double salvo, although the first, on the halfhour, courted controversy. From Ward’s cross, Gerken could only punch away with Williamson close by but the ball dropped to HENDERSON, who had a steadying touch before firing home. Then followed a moment of uncertainty when one of the assistants had a flag raised, presumably for a Blades player in an offside position, but after a conversation with referee Hall, the goal was allowed to stand. Johnson’s prolonged protestation earned him a booking but worse was to follow for the home side soon after when United added a second. McCombe, a Sheffield Wednesday fan, fluffed his clearance and Ward picked up the loose ball and laid off for an unmarked HENDERSON to coolly slide home. Shell-shocked, City did attempt to fight back. Ikeme was forced into two saves, the first from a McCombe header and then dropping to his left to keep out an Elliott shot. City’s pressure continued until the break. United’s loan goalkeeper dropped a cross in difficult circumstances but, fortunately, Haynes could only fire into the sidenetting. The home side’s best chance of the half arrived on 44 minutes, Hartley’s pass put Haynes in the clear but he slipped at a vital moment and his lay off to Sno was cut out by Harper. After weathering the storm at the end of the first period, the Blades were also on the back foot at the start of the second half when Sno’s chip over the

Ikeme was quickly off his line to block. There was a chance to put the game out of City’s reach when Henderson attempted to return the favour to Ward but his square ball was over hit and resulted in Williamson shooting wide. The home side took advantage to reduce the arrears with the next move when Morgan was adjudged to have fouled Haynes on 53 minutes and from Hartley’s inswinging free-kick CAREY beat Davies in the air to head home. Ward and Walker picked up bookings, apparently for timewasting, before Ikeme came to the rescue on 57 minutes. A flick on by Haynes beat both of United’s central defenders and found Maynard in the clear but the striker’s shot was kicked away by the United goalkeeper. Williamson, ill in the week, was the first to be replaced, with Stewart introduced on the left and Quinn moving inside but City’s attacks continued. On 66 minutes defender Carey appeared on the right flank and his deep cross picked out Haynes but again the striker was thwarted by another save from Ikeme. A powerful Maynard shot was blocked by the head of Davies, who needed treatment and there was respite, on 78 minutes, when Carey was booked for a late challenge on Ward. Henderson and McAllister followed the City captain into the book after a tussle, whilst home boss Johnson used all his substitutes to freshen up his attacking approach. United remained on the defensive in the closing stages but looked comfortable in dealing with City’s assaults, whilst Reid was introduced as a late replacement for Ward. Stewart and Sproule were booked for a tussle, which ensued near a corner flag. Five minutes of added time gave the home fans fresh impetus and their long balls into the box were repelled... until the final minute of the extra. The ball was hacked into the box and appeared to be trapped under the feet of Fortune before SABORIO took control and placed into the corner. The goal was gutting, Kilgallon questioned about of time added, but there was still time for the Blades to mount one more attack and how decisive it proved to be. Well over the five minutes of added time had elapsed when Reid, positioned centrally, saw his shot at the edge of the box blocked. But the ball fell for HENDERSON, who kept his cool and fired across and under the body of Gerken, before heading off to celebrate in front of 807 ecstatic travelling fans.

TOP MAN Kevin Blackwell has paid a huge tribute to Darius Henderson after the big striker smashed a hat-trick at Bristol and propelled himself up the Championship’s leading scorers lists on Saturday. Three left-footed finishes ended the home team’s long unbeaten home record and, the United manager believes, underlined the success of his judgement in bringing the player to the Lane: “There were people who questioned the signing of Darius but I knew what he has got as a footballer. “He is more than a targetman - his touch on the ball is not recognised enough - but to get ten goals by this stage of the season is great and he thoroughly deserves all the glory he is getting after his hat-trick. “He is a leader and on Saturday Gary Johnson put Jamie McCombe on him to try and subdue him. McCombe is about six feet five inches tall and those sort of contests are easier for defenders than the strikers but Darius dominated him. “Darius takes a terrific battering from defenders but he always gives his all and on his day I believe that he is the best centre-forward in the Championship. If he was up for sale I would think that clubs who could afford him would want him. “I told him that I think that he can get 20 goals this season his previous best is 15 - and we will be pushing him to go for that. His third goal was some finish, we all thought it was going across goal and beyond the post but it finished up just inside.” Blackwell also talked about the problem he faced in choosing between Mark Bunn and Carl Ikeme in goal “It was a very tough decision and Mark was very unlucky because he had his best game for us against Peterborough the week before. “But a manager is paid to make the hard decisions like that and I hope that it was justified by what happened at Bristol City.”

MONTY GLAD TO BE BACK

After fully recovering from knee ligament damage, Nick Montgomery made a winning return to United’s starting eleven at the weekend, much to his delight. Despite nearly two months on the sidelines, Montgomery slotted straight back into his midfield role at Ashton Gate and looked at his normal tenacious best against the Robins as the Blades showed their resolve to net a crucial success: “I started training on Tuesday, then trained again on Thursday and Friday, before getting told I would be playing. Bristol City: Gerken, Skuse “I am delighted to be back in (Sproule 76), McCombe, the team and it is pleasing to Carey, McAllister (Fontaine know the Gaffer can trust me 88), Hartley, Elliott, Johnson, to come straight back in and do Sno (Saborio 84), Haynes, a job after being out for eight Maynard. weeks. Unused: Clarkson, Williams, S. “Overall, I think we deserved Henderson, Nyatanga. the win, it is important to get back-to-back victories and now Blades: Ikeme, Montgomery, we must look to gain some Morgan, Kilgallon, Hendermomentum ahead of the hectic son, Williamson (Stewart 60), Christmas schedule. Harper (Fortune 90), Ward “I feel good getting through (Reid 88), Davies, Quinn, the full 90 minutes. I tested the Walker. knee in two or three challenges Unused: France, Evans, Taylor, and it is nice to know it is Bunn. strong.”

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

They say you don’t change a winning team For various reasons this is a decision that Kevin Blackwell has not had the liberty of being able to make this season, mainly as the Blades haven’t actually recorded that many victories, and our treatment room has often resembled the Northern General A+E. It was however, a decision that Blackwell was faced with in the run up to Saturday’s meeting with Bristol City at Ashton gate. In what was ultimately a nervy 1-0 home win against bottom of the table Peterborough ten days ago, the first pairing this season of Ched Evans and Henri Camara showed some signs of promise. The first half saw the Senegalese striker bag his first goal for the club, while Evans looked bright in front of goal and put in arguably his brightest performance to date. But with top scorer Darius Henderson back in contention for Saturday’s tie in Bristol, Blackwell could have had a tough decision to make. The difficulty of this decision was tempered slightly, with Camara not training all week due to a hamstring complaint. But with Blackwell reverting to his usual away tactics of 4-5-1, Evans also missed out as Henderson was handed the opportunity to add to his haul of seven league goals this campaign. The Blades chief’s decision was fully justified as the big striker made it ten for the season as he notched up a blistering hat trick. Henderson has had his doubters this season, for both his all round game and return in goals. But the figures do not lie, and with ten goals in seventeen appearances this season, the big man sits proudly at the top of the club’s goal-scoring charts and joint second for the Championship. So while it is generally agreed that you don’t change a winning team, I’m sure Kevin Blackwell is quietly confident he made the right call in thrusting Darius Henderson back into action.
