WHO WILL BE THE NEXT SHEFFIELD LEGEND? It’s your chance to have a say in who you would like to join the exclusive ‘walk of fame’ outside Sheffield’s Town Hall.

Local people are now being invited to nominate the next Sheffield Legend and join the likes of local heroes Sean Bean, Def Leppard, Seb Coe and Michael Palin, The people of Sheffield are being asked to nominate their favourites, then an independent panel will be given the tough task of choosing this year’s Legend.

Sheffield Legends honour the city’s heroes from various walks of life – from the arts to science and from sport to industry. They have a special plaque set into the pavement ‘Hollywood Boulevardstyle’ – believed to be the first of its kind in this country. Those honoured will be invited for an ‘unveiling’ ceremony outside the Town Hall in the heart of the city.

When the initiative was launched five years ago hundreds of nominations were received from the public for their heroes to become Sheffield Legends. These were considered by an independent Selection Board representing various sectors in the city - the arts, sport, education, media and modern businesses - which was chaired by the Lord Mayor.

So far 15 celebrities have been honoured, although not all have

unveiled their plaques yet. They represent a wide cross-section of activities, but all have a strong connection with Sheffield - either being born in the city or having lived here for many years and are strongly associated with the city: Gordon Banks - England’s World Cup winning goalkeeper.

Jarvis Cocker, Joe Cocker, Sebastian Coe, Derek Dooley, Brendan Ingle, Def Leppard, David Mellor, Michael Palin, Joe Scarborough, Helen Sharman, Joe Simpson, Michael Vaughan and Clinton Woods Lord Mayor, Cllr Graham Oxley said: “This is a very special honour that I know the Legends really value, as they are nominated by the people of Sheffield and chosen by an independent panel.

You now have an opportunity to nominate those who have brought recognition to Sheffield at national or international level. We already have some wonderful Legends in our ‘walk of fame’ and there are several personalities who have a strong claim to join them.

“I hope everyone will send in their favourite local heroes to make our Sheffield Legends truly representative of the celebrities from many walks of life associated with this city. The aim is to keep the Legends topical, so we are looking for people who

the public can relate to today.”

Those eligible for the awards must either have been born in Sheffield or have a very strong association with the city and must have achieved recognition at national or preferably at international level.

Nominees will be required to write a short note of around 50 words to say why their choice should receive the honour. All the nominations will be considered by the Selection Board.

Nominations may be sent to the Lord Mayor, Sheffield City Council at the Town Hall, Pinstone Street, Sheffield S1 2HH by post clearly marked ‘Sheffield Legends’ or by e-mail to lordmayor@sheffield.gov. uk by Friday 19 February.

heart is beyond amazing.

So, you may be surprised to learn, in an age where emotions are classed as girly and logic is king, that the human heart has at least forty thousand neurons, as many as there are in the brain. The heart also sends as many messages to the brain as the brain sends out to the other organs. The heart has its own nervous system yet we don’t listen to what it says as much as we listen to our thoughts.

The heart is more than qualified to steer us.

When our brain sends information to react in a certain way to the rest of the body, all organs co-operate apart from the heart.

There is a delay and the heart ‘thinks’ how to react and does so according to the situation not the stimulus from the brain alone.

The heart deserves listening too and next week we are going to look at how we listen to our heart and access yet another guidance system that can lead us to the life we deserve :0)

BIG STRYDE’S ‘Star In The Hood’ Tinchy Stryder returns. (O2 Academy, 6th Feb). After topping the charts with his groundbreaking debut ‘Catch 22’.

Stryder hails from the Bow in East London, and has been referred to by Rewind Magazine as the “Prince of Grime”. He first gained fame performing on pirate radio stations in his early teens, including Deja Vu and Rinse. He became prominent in the underground scene after constantly going on radio and performing live shows with Wiley and Dizzee Rascal, who were prominent figures in grime at the time. Stryder came to prominence first in 2003, winning ‘best newcomer’ at the Sidewinder awards. Since then he has collaborated with many major artists in the grime genre, including two re-mixes with The Streets. Stryder received

a financial boost around this time when Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament Norman Lamb re-mortgaged his house to raise funds to chart Stryder’s first songs. (Now that’s what I call an MP!). Lamb’s son Archie is Stryder’s producer. His debut album Star In the Hood was released on 13th August 2007. A single “Breakaway” was released from the album, along with “Something About Your Smile”, and “Mainstream Money” as a bonus track. His next single, called “Take Me Back”, featuring Taio Cruz, was a popular hit following numerous plays on Radio 1, Kiss FM and many other TV and radio stations. Stryder’s next single, a collaboration with N-Dubz (whom he had toured with on their recent Uncle B tour), titled “Number 1” topped the UK Singles Chart giving Stryder and N-Dubz their first number one single.

In the two years since 2007’s On The Leyline – described

by Uncut as their “career best” – they’ve played with thrash metal bands in Korea, stolen the show at this year’s ‘V’ (where they were named ‘Band Of The Festival’ by Radio 2 and Absolute Radio) and later this month will jet off for a debut show in Dubai. Falling between the energetic pop/rock of mod revival and the psychedelic experimentation’s of Traffic, Ocean Colour Scene came to be

one of the leading bands of the traditionalist, post-Oasis British rock of the mid-’90s. Although they had formed in the late ‘80s and had several hits during the height of Madchester in the early ‘90s, the band didn’t earn a large following until 1996, when their second album, Moseley Shoals, became a multi-platinum success story in the U.K. Their ascent was greatly aided by Paul Weller and Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, who both publicly praised Ocean Colour Scene for keeping the flame of real rock & roll burning during the ‘90s. And, according to one specific definition, they were right, since Ocean Colour Scene was nothing if not rock & roll traditionalists, drawing heavily from British Invasion pop, psychedelia, soul, R&B, and blues-rock to create a reverential homage to classic rock. The Nigerian born singer exploded onto the Worlds charts in the ‘80’s. Making lounge music sound cool (kinda). ‘You’re Love Is King’ and ‘Smooth Operator’ being her two biggest hits at the time.

The album ‘Diamond Life’ sold trillions it seemed and then she seemed to disappear from our radar. It’s easy for artists to disappear unwittingly, if the promotion isn’t there or the record company stops putting the money in, then you’re nowhere.

The consensus at the time was that Sade had earnt so much money that she didn’t need to work ever again and so, quite simply, she stopped.

That isn’t quite the whole truth, as with most things in the press (here not included) you have to not take everything at face value and try to eek the little bit of truth out of the whole thing. Yes she’s made a fortune, but she still made a few more albums, she just didn’t do the whole promotion trail as much as she once had. Having said that, this is the first album recorded and released for ten years. So what do we get? There’s an ageing in her voice that has improved it a lot I feel. It has much more depth to it. It’s maybe not as unique but it is far richer (bit like her bank balance!……….I know, bad gag!) The album’s production is as beautifully done as you would expect, but it’s much more than that.

The only thing I can describe it to is the few ‘90’s Bryan Ferry albums, the Slave to Love era and beyond.

It’s as full and as rich and passionate as that but with a powerful bottom end and chugging sparse guitar riffs stabbing in and out that makes it feel very current. If you weren’t sure about hearing Sade again, this is far better than anyone could have expected from her, it really is a very accomplished album. As always, if you want to check it out first, have a listen to it on her Myspace page, just Google the words Myspace and Sade.

I think partly, the CSI series is to blame for this release as they use ‘Wont Get Fooled Again’ heavily in their series. Well I say blame, what I should be saying is thankyou.

Everyone should have a little bit of The Who in their collection somewhere I believe. Like The Beatles and The Stones you’re probably gonna prefer one era over another, I know I do. I wasn’t ever into the early mod stuff, but when they started to do the brilliant rock opera ‘Tommy’ and then later albums such as ‘Who Are You’ I loved them. The blues were still there but the rock was slammed right into the centre of their sound and it was astounding.

If like me you only prefer one era then a collection of their biggest hits may not be the way to go, but on the other hand all the songs on here are such classics that it’s hard not to like ‘em. Plus if you go for the Special Edition (only two quid more) you get a full live 75 minute cd too, a bargain surely.

This is ok but it’s not amazing.

NEWSPAPERS CAN BE THE FUTURE I keep reading that newspapers are on the demise and that regional titles such as The Yorkshire Post and even our own Sheffield Star are looking towards new ways, for them, to make money. We know that the circulation of The Star is far below the levels it was however the parent company Johnstons Press have many titles under their belt which rely on classified advertising for their income.

Johnston Press is to close its final salary pension scheme to existing members. The

company says it will help cut its pensions deficit, which has grown from £74m to £146m since 2002 which is another indicator that these are less prosperous times for them.

Personally I buy The Star every night as it is a fairly decent read and obviously I have a professional interest in the content.

When we look at all of the titles available in South Yorkshire it strikes me that none of them are as involved in the community these days as we are at The Mercury. A newspaper has

traditionally been much more than somewhere to read news and advertise and as the bigger titles have passed into national ownership they really do seem to have lost the community spirit. I well remember the days of the ‘Star Walk’ and there didn’t seem to be a community event that didn’t have the support of the local press. Successful business are all too well aware that it’s people that make the difference.

JON SET TO MAKE A BIG IMPRESSION AT TRIBUTE CONCERT Entertainment and television star Jon Culshaw is the latest big name to sign up to a tribute concert in memory of the charity achievements of former radio presenter Dave Kilner.

The impressionist and comedian will form part of the star-studded line-up performing at Dave Kilner - A Night to Remember.

The event, taking place at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 30 April, has been organised

by Dave’s widow Shirley and his two daughters Rebecca and Nicola and will mark the launch of a new charity to help local, disadvantaged children.

Jon is renowned for his work with Radio 1’s Chris Moyles, Dead Ringers and Spitting Image where he came to fame with more than 40 voice impressions of personalities including the then Prime Minister John Major.

More recently he has launched a new comedy sketch show with Debra Stephenson, The Impression Show, which is due to be released on DVD. Jon said: “Dave was a warm, bright, kind, funny man and a good friend. And a broadcasting legend, let’s not forget that. It is an honour to be part of a show that pays such a fitting tribute to him.”

Other entertainment stars and bands linked to Sheffield who have confirmed so far include Joe Elliott and Rick

Savage from legendary rock group Def Leppard, Tony Christie whose recent Made in Sheffield album was an outstanding success and singer/songwriter John Parr – renowned for St Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion).

Shirley said: “It is fantastic that Jon has agreed to perform at the concert. Dave and Jon were really close and, during his visits to Sheffield, he often used to pop round to our house to watch football on TV with Dave.

“They worked together on many occasions and Jon supported Dave throughout his career, particularly when it came to charity events and we are so grateful he giving up his time once again. I’m sure his impressions will delight the audience and also help raise money for a worthwhile cause.

“We are currently talking to other big names from Sheffield and are very confident of making further announcements in the coming weeks about additional acts to join the line-up.”

Dave died aged 48. Born and bred in Sheffield, the fatherof-two, who lived in Whirlow, was a radio presenter with the best contacts book in the local world of showbiz and sport.

He was also a prominent voice at Sheffield United, in fundraising for local charities and even in pantomime.

It was as a DJ with Radio

Hallam and Hallam FM that he made his initial major impression. Starting as a 17-year-old trainee, he was with the radio station for more than 20 years. He eventually moved to Magic AM before becoming one of the guiding forces behind Peak FM when the Chesterfield station was launched. Then he returned to Magic AM. After his radio career, he became fundraising manager for Help A Hallam Child, running charity balls and other events. All the money raised from Dave Kilner - A Night to Remember will go to help local disadvantaged children.

More and more people are telling us that they see The Mercury all over the place and an indication of how well the paper is read is the simple fact that we never seem to have any returns at the end of the week.

Advertisers come back to us time and time again and it’s good to hear people telling us how their advertising is working well for them.

As businesses face difficult times the last thing they should do is stop telling people what they do as public relations and advertising are the very oxygen that businesses rely on for growth. If nobody tells you how are you supposed to

know. The secret of good advertising is to see your business as other people see it. Furthermore, if the medium you choose to advertise in doesn’t get read then it’s as bad as not advertising at all. Advertising is nearly always the first budget to be cut and then the accountants wonder why business continues to fall. Advertising should be a minimum of 6% of your annual turnover so if you take £3000 over the bar at the weekend it would not be unreasonable to look at a budget of £180 just for that weekend alone. The problem here is that you can only get out of any business what you are prepared to put in so if you only spend £20 per week on advertising that level of investment will yield a lower return. As we have the benefit of knowing how much is spent on advertising it will not surprise anyone that the most successful clubs are the ones that advertise the most. I rest my case.

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS The Lone Ranger and Tonto walked into a bar and sat down for a beer.

After a few minutes, a big mean looking cowboy walked into the saloon and said “Who owns that big white horse out-side?”

The Lone Ranger stood up, felt for his gun and said “I do… Why?” The cowboy looked at the Lone Ranger and said “ I just thought you’d like to know that your horse is about dead outside” The Lone Ranger and Tonto rushed outside and sure enough Silver was ready to die from heat exhaustion.

The Lone Ranger got the horse some water and soon Silver was starting to feel better. The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said “ Tonto, I want you to run around Silver as fast as you can and see if you can create enough of a breeze to cool Silver down and make him feel better.”

Tonto said “Sure thing, Kemosabe” and took off running circles around Silver as fast as he could.

Not able to do anything else but wait, the Lone Ranger returned to the bar to finish his drink.

A few minutes later, another cowboy strutted into the saloon and asked “who owns that big white horse outside?”

The Lone Ranger stood again and claimed “I do, what’s wrong with him this time?”

The cowboy looked him in the eye and said “ Nothing, but you left your Injun runnin!”

I was intrigued by an advertisement in this newspaper for freedom and rights. I had to discover what this was all about and duly rang the advertiser, Phil Johnson.

Regrettably, when I rang, Phil answered with the mother and father of all sore throats, and I could barely understand him. He did agree to send me an e-mail however. I was delighted to discover that at last we have an organisation prepared to take on the government with the aim of repealing the smoking ban. Phil stated that freedom2choose.info are a non political, non funded organisation made up of people from all walks of life, 70% of whom are non-smokers, who support freedom of choice on whether we smoke in public places. I tend to agree with Phil that this is a calculated tactic by the government to set 75% of the population against the now minority 25% of smokers, getting the population into a controlled state, where the government take control of our everyday life.

I am indebted to Phil for the following statistics regarding the consequences of the smoking ban; five thousand businesses closed, 110,000 added to the unemployment list an ever increasing number of bankruptcies, twenty seven couples rendered homeless and four suicides. The smoking ban took away 68% of pubs regular drinkers, a number impossible to recover from. The government’s spin about the number of new drinkers, promised on

July 1st 2007 simply did not materialise. The Pubco’s are the major sufferers in all this, (good enough for them I hear you cry), leaving Punch and Enterprise £3.5 bn. in the red, and neither could sell all their outlets and finish up solvent.

I feel very comfortable giving some free publicity to this worthy organisation, and I am sure that it will receive the full backing of this newspaper, which is committed to help and support our ailing club and publand scene.

The top showbusiness story of the week has to be Mr. Jordan, Alex Reid winning Celebrity Big Brother. Alex entered the house to tumultuous boos and hisses, and left to massive applause. During his stay in the house, he has shown his true character, a likeable chap and perfect gentleman. Now that he has achieved a certain level of celebrity status, he felt confident in asking the awful Katie Price to marry him and got an affirmative reply. I have to say that despite the criticism that the celebrities were not A list, apart from Vinnie Jones according to him, this has been the best yet. It actually seemed to be quite real with liberal amounts of farting, and not only from the men. Vinnie Jones was the big disappointment for me. His sulking when Lady Sov (who is she?) escaped eviction was pathetic.

Vinnie wants to remember his roots and not act like some kind of superstar. After all his football career is best remembered for him grabbing Gazza’s

testicles and signing for the Blades for the magnificent sum of 700k. If I remember right, a linesman would fetch 500k at that time, so he was hardly rated world class.

Sheffield Wednesday continue to stack up the points, getting twelve out of the last possible fifteen. That is promotion form if ever I saw it, and they will continue to play with great confidence now that relegation is no longer likely. The Blades, meanwhile, continue to scrape wins on a regular basis despite not playing well.

My act of the week has to go to a young man who really impressed me the first and only other time I saw him, Ged Hill.

Ged was playing at the Victoria in Dronfield, and I went with the missus and two lovely lady friends of ours. I had arranged to meet Mandy G, Chesterfield’s very own top vocalist.

Ged’s first spot lasted an hour and a half, long by most artiste’s standards, but he looked as if he was thoroughly enjoying himself. His material was terrific, including some sixties classics, Queen, the Beatles, Coldplay, and pretty much anything the appreciative audience requested. Ged is a competent guitarist, fantastic vocalist and his relaxed style made him very popular. As part of their 30th Anniversary Tour Heaven 17 will perform their seminal 1981 album of the year ‘Penthouse And Pavement’ live in its entirety for the very first time at Magna, Rotherham on Saturday 6th March.

Featuring original members lead singer Glenn Gregory and synthesist and vocalist Martyn Ware, together with backing vocalist Billie Godfrey, electric guitarist Asa Bennett, Joel Farland on electronic percussion and legendary bass guitarist Randy Hope-Taylor.

Prior to the live performance of Penthouse and Pavements, Magna will host several audio visual experiences in its many rooms, the audience is encouraged to participate in this experience as a build up to the main event. These curated rooms will not involve live performances and provide an excellent opportunity to discover the many parts of magna.

Lighting designer Pip Rhodes will coordinate a live digital visual show featuring some of the biggest names and most talented up-and-coming artists from the worlds of digital and graphic design, fine art and film, including Chris Bird (United Visual Artists), graphic designer Malcolm Garrett, Mike Faulkner (D-Fuse), famous artist Tim Head, Ian Anderson (Designers Republic), Ross Phillips (ShowStudio), Brian Duffy (Modified Toy Orchestra), James Strong, Kim Leliboux, Ed Cookson (The Sancho Plan), BAFTAwinning filmmaker Julian Henriques, Ben Tomlinson, James Bates, Chris Cheeseman and, of course, Pip Rhodes and Heaven 17 themselves.

The event will be curated from the moment the audience enters the venue, as the LED wall will be showing the visual artists’ interpretations of BEF compositions from the same period, including tracks from BEF albums ‘Music For Stowaways’ and ‘Music Of Quality

And Distinction Vol.1’ – and all artists have been allowed to express their interpretations freely with no prior guidance from Heaven 17. The artists contributing to this ‘group show’ will be credited – this will be a world-first multimedia show – part art installation and part concert – the evening culminating with Penthouse And Pavement being performed in its entirety, the two sides punctuated by special BEF performances featuring surprise guest singers.

This will be a unique opportunity for the audience to immerse themselves in Heaven 17 and BEF’s futuristic musical vision of the period, using today’s technologies and sensibilities – this is no nostalgia show…

CAMRA, The Campaign for Real Ale, is currently seeking nominations from across the UK to find its National Club of the Year for 2011.

Under the rules of the competition, any club whose membership is open to all, and serves top quality real ale, is eligible to enter into the CAMRA Club of the Year competition.

John Holland, CAMRA Club of the Year competition Coordinator, said: ‘This much sought after, prestigious award is open to all clubs that show commitment to good quality real ale and I’m really looking forward to seeing which clubs are nominated, whether known to CAMRA or not. No doubt they will come from

every corner of the UK and represent virtually every type of club we have. I fully expect the judges to have a hard job deciding between them.’

In 2009, the CAMRA Club of the Year Award went to the Guiseley Factory Workers club in West Yorkshire.

Deadline for self-nominations is March 31st 2010, with the winner to be announced in May 2011.

Gavin Gunning and Marcus Marshall have both extended their loans from Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season.

The Millers have introduced certain measures over the past 18 months designed to encourage younger supporters to attend Don Valley, and with Under 8s able to attend every home game free of charge, the Millers are looking to attract the supporters for the future: “It is very encouraging that we have seen an increase in our average attendance in comparison to last season and we are determined to do what we can in order to gather momentum with continuing that trend,” said Mr. Stewart.

“To see young Rotherham United supporters, our next generation of Millers, enjoying games with their families is always a welcoming sight and, with this in mind, I am keen to remind all supporters that it is free of charge to come to every home League fixture for Under 8s.”

A Long Wait For a Power Play (Almost 87 Minutes, To Be Precise) Referee Moray Hanson might have removed the Scottish flag sticker from the back of his helmet, but his Scottish bias is still in plain view. It took him until the 87th minute of play during the Capitals vs Steelers double header weekend to award the Steelers their first power play, much to the frustration of the Steelers’ bench and traveling fans.

New import Mike Sgroi, who only landed in the UK the day before the Scottish trip after a whirlwind journey across the US and Canada to obtain his travel documents, seemed immensely unimpressed with only his second experience of EIHL refereeing – and this is a man you don’t want to irritate.

Sgroi, a trained UFC cage fighter, mixed martial arts instructor, AND pro hockey player, made his home debut on Friday against the Cardiff Devils after signing for Sheffield last week. Hype over his first meeting with Devils’ captain and resident hard man Brad Voth meant that Ice Sheffield was a sell-out, though the two were on their best behaviour all night. It looked like the sell-out crowd were going to witness another Steelers defeat, with the Devils taking a two goal lead early in the game. Ex-Steeler Ryan Finnerty fired home their first goal with just 15 seconds on the clock (the fastest goal this season), and Phil Hill doubled their lead in the 7th minute. Scott Basiuk gave hope to the Sheffield fans as he put one on the board for the Steelers at 43:08, but the Steelers fans were kept waiting for another 15 nail-biting minutes before Joey Talbot took the game

into overtime with a goal at 58:30. Overtime wasn’t needed however, as new boy Sgroi fired home the game-winning goal with just 11 seconds left on the clock.

On Saturday the Steelers made the long haul up to Edinburgh for the double-header weekend.

Saturday’s game saw the Steelers once again go 2-0 down in the first period, shots from Neil Hay and Marc Lefebvre finding the back of the Steelers’ net.

However in the second period it was all Steelers, with goals from Robert Farmer and Rob Dowd leveling the scores. In the third period Sean Perkins scored his first goal for the Capitals, at 43:13 and less than a minute later, Farmer added his second of the evening. With the Steelers bench getting visibly frustrated, as Referee Hanson turned a blind eye to Capitals’ penaltyworthy actions, the Capitals added insult to injury with goals from Martin Cingel, returning to the line-up that night from injury, and Mark Garside within a minute. Owen Fussey adding the empty net goal with just 16 seconds remaining.

With less than a minute left on the clock, ex-Steeler Andrew Sharp left the Capitals bench for the first time that night, skating over to Sgroi looking to mix it up. It took a few attempts for Sharp to get his point across, Sgroi presumably struggling to believe that the Edinburgh benchwarmer actually fancied his chances. Sharp has 36 Edinburgh games on his stats so far this season, with 78 penalty minutes, no goals and no assists. Sharp landed a couple of punches before Sgroi fired back, knocking the smaller player to

the floor. Sharpe’s penalty was the first awarded to the Capitals during the entire game.

“We worked hard” said Head Coach Dave Matsos of Saturday’s performance, “really hard and I thought we deserved better. I couldn’t believe that we didn’t get one power play chance in the whole game, we had a lot of time in their zone and I thought we drew a fair few penalties. Problem was that the referee didn’t.”

On Sunday the Steelers came out firing on all cylinders, taking the first period with a goal from Matt Hubbauer. During the second Jason Hewitt scored at 30:21, and Joey Talbot added a third, scoring his 100th EIHL career goal. It was a night for centuries, as Scott Basiuk assisted on Rob Dowd’s goal, earning his 100th EIHL career point. It was too soon for Steelers fans to sit back and relax, however, as Neil Hay and Owen Fussey added two goals in under two minutes for the home side. The Steelers soon got back in their stride, with goals from Doug Sheppard, Jeff Legue, and Rob Dowd completing the 7-2 score line.

The Steelers’ next home game is a Challenge Cup Semi-Final against arch-rivals the Nottingham Panthers, on Wednesday February 3rd. Steelers are also in action this weekend, with a double header of home games at the Sheffield Arena against the Belfast Giants. A first half brace from Luke Varney helped Sheffield Wednesday to a vital win against fellow strugglers Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.

But the Owls had to come from behind to seal their fourth win in five under new manager Alan Irvine.

Rory Fallon gave the Pilgrims the lead before Wednesday hit back with Varney’s crucial double.

The victory puts more daylight between SWFC and the bottom three, with Irvine’s side now heading into next week’s trip to high-flyers Nottingham Forest with renewed confidence.

Wednesday made one change from the side that lost to Scunthorpe in midweek, with Varney making his first start since returning to Hillsborough on loan from Derby County.

But it was Plymouth that posed the first threat inside three minutes when dangerman and top scorer Jamie Mackie sent a low shot in that fizzed past the post, although Lee Grant appeared to have the midfielder cum striker’s effort covered.

Mackie’s sidekick Fallon flicked a volley over the crossbar moments later, while the Owls struggled to make an impression in the final third.

The game then exploded into life midway through the half with two goals in a little more than a minute.

First, Plymouth took the lead through Fallon’s header from an Alan Judge corner, but the Owls hit straight back as Varney pounced on a Marcus Tudgay header to swiftly level the score from close range.

Varney almost profited from Karl Arnason’s weak backpass ten minutes before the break before the in-form hitman did double his tally 42 minutes.

Tudgay again played a key role, flicking Tommy Spurr’s punt down the left channel and from there it was all about Varney. The 27-year-old beat Rada Johnson for pace and cut inside to bury a rasping drive across David Stock-

The early throes of the second period took the same guise as the first, with Plymouth seeing much more of the ball, albeit to little end.

Wednesday were solid in defence but needed more possession - particularly towards the Pilgrims’ half - as the West Country outfit had the hosts on the back foot.

Spurr’s superb last-ditch tackle denied Fallon a second goal following a teasing cross from Chris Clark and Irvine sent on Akpo Sodje for Tom Soares in a bid to up the attacking ante.

The visitors continued to press but failed to trouble the Owls’ rearguard, who stood firm and helped the team to three more vital points in the battle against relegation.

Sodje signs for Charlton Sheffield Wednesday striker Akpo Sodje has signed for Charlton Athletic on a halfseason loan, which will take the 29-year-old to the end of his current contract at Hillsborough.

Sodje joined the League One side on a similar loan deal in November 2009 until the turn of the year and went on to make nine appearances for the Londoners, scoring twice.

The former Port Vale man is eligible to play in Charlton’s trip to Walsall on Tuesday.

Sodje signed for the Owls in August 2007 and made 44 appearances, scoring nine goals along the way.

Winning ugly will do

The players have emerged from a hectic recent schedule with four wins from a possible five in a fortnight and Irvine welcomes the albeit brief respite.

But any win makes my weekend football experience a lot more fulfilling.

It turns a brace after the match into a gallon. I’ll stay up to watch The Football League Show and endure someone telling me what Trev from Wycombe thinks so I can see the goals again. I’ll buy the Sunday newspaper, read the match report and throw the rest away. I’ll even sit through Calendar on a Monday evening to relive the goals once more.

Personally, I’ll never get bored of winning but something tells me I won’t get the chance.

However, a few more “horrible” wins will mean I won’t be relaying Greek proverbs about an ugly win over the Grecians next season.

BAGGIES LEAD BLADES TO FIRST DEFEAT OF 2010

United missed the chance to close the gap on West Brom following a first league defeat of 2010.

A suspect penalty gave West Brom the initiative and the Blades were unable to recover - despite Darius Henderson netting his first goal since the end of November.

Graham Dorrans, Roman Bednar and Jerome Thomas were on target for the home side Stewart and Henderson were recalled at the expense of Taylor, injured, and Evans, who dropped to the bench, prompting a switch to a 4-5-1 system with Ward and Cresswell supporting the leading goalscorer from the flanks. Yeates again had to be content with a place amongst the substitutes and West Brom included Bednar and Dorrans, both of whom were rated as doubts.

The sun was shining in the West Midlands, but the winter chill was not over, forcing a number of the outfield players to don gloves.

The early action was frantic but with opportunities at a premium.

Albion won the first corner and at the other end Ward’s lay off was cut out just before Quinn arrived.

Thomas danced inside Harper and Fortune but his left-footer was blocked by Morgan and Carson was the first goalkeeper called into action, saving from Cresswell on 10 minutes after a quick throw

by Henderson had caught the home defence cold.

On 19 minutes, Albion were gifted the lead thanks to two decisions that clearly benefitted the home side. In the build up Quinn was adjudged to have fouled when he was, if anything, the victim and then referee Russell thought a penalty was in order when the ball hit Montgomery, who was attempting to halt the progress of Dorrans. United’s protests were arduous to the point of explaining to the official that he had made a mistake, but the spot-kick stood and DORRANS sent Bunn the wrong way.

Within five minutes there was a chance to get back on level terms when Mulumbu failed to clear but Ward’s instinctive shot was saved

by Carson and then Bednar missed from the centre of the goal, just six yards out, after a good move involving Koren and Jara.

But the striker made amends on the half hour. From a United free-kick, the Baggies broke away with a number of neat passes and Thomas found an unmarked BEDNAR, who had been involved earlier in the move, and he slid beyond Bunn into the corner of the net.

The second Albion goal prompted a rethink and for the remainder of the half Cresswell joined Henderson in attack with Quinn moving to the left. A slack back-pass by the Irish midfielder was cut out by Bednar but Bunn did well to force the striker wide and Koren was also off target for the home side.

Ward was prevented from a shooting chance by Olsson’s challenge whilst the final opportunity of the first period fell to the home side but Koren’s shot looked to be blocked by a combination of Fortune’s arm and body but the referee, funnily enough, opted to ignore, although it didn’t stop him being questioned about the earlier penalty decision by the Blades management as he left the pitch for his half-time cuppa.

It seemed to have the desired effect as within five minutes of the restart the Blades were also the recipients of a penalty.

Walker, Ward and Quinn were all involved down the right before the latter’s run was crudely halted by Mulumbu’s clumsy challenge. The big shoulders of HENDERSON took responsibility and drilled the penalty past Carson.

United’s revival, however, was stunted within a minute as the home side added a third. A quick break down the left resulted in Bednar taking the attentions of Fortune and THOMAS cutting inside before unleashing a shot

which deflected off Morgan, taking the ball away from Bunn’s reach.

Cresswell started the half in attack with Henderson and remained in that position with the Blades trying to reduce the two-goal deficit once more whilst the bit of spice creeping into the play was ended by referee Russell showing yellow cards to Quinn and Jara.

United were doing most of the second period’s attacking, forcing Albion into two substitutions, whilst the visitors threw on Camara and Yeates to try and open up the home defence. From a Harper corner, Ward failed to keep down an acrobatic effort.

West Brom were still a threat on the break. A neat Cox pass resulted in Thomas beating Walker but his cross flew across the face of goal and Bednar was stopped by the offside flag.

On 85 minutes United’s shouts for a second penalty went unrewarded for Olsson’s lunge on Camara. A minor skirmish between the two resulted in words from the referee but no cards, although Brunt was cautioned soon after for a foul on Stewart.

Albion threw on more defensive cover for the closing minutes but from another break Bunn saved from Dorrans and, at the other end, the Baggies defence protected Carson well to negotiate the four minutes of injury-time.

BLADES SIGN INTERNATIONAL ‘KEEPER United have completed the signing of Estonian international goalkeeper Mihkel Aksalu.

The 25-year-old, who has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal, joins from FC Flora Tallinn in his homeland for a nominal fee.

He has spent time with goalkeeping coach Andy Leaning during a number of trial spells at the Shirecliffe training facility over the past two months, and joins to add competition for the goalkeeper’s jersey with Mark Bunn and Ian Bennett.

Kevin Blackwell says: “He has proved to be one of the best goalkeeping triallists we have seen for a long time.

“It is a terrific opportunity for him and if he continues his development he will become the number one Estonian goalkeeper.

We are hoping he can fulfill his undoubted potential with Sheffield United and cement his international career.”

The 6ft 4ins stopper is a full Estonia international with six caps after progressing through the U21s ranks.

He was an unused substitute as Estonia lost to England in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley in October 2007.

His list of club honours include being Estonian League runners-up in 2007 and 2008, whilst he was part of the FC Flora Tallinn team that won the Estonian Super Cup in 2009.

REID JOINS CHARLTON Blades midfielder Kyel Reid has joined League One promotion hopefuls Charlton Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

The former West Ham youngster was Kevin Blackwell’s first permanent signing of the season last summer.

But he has failed to make a meaningful impression this campaign, starting just one game against Port Vale in the Carling Cup and coming on seven times as a substitute in the league.

The loan is scheduled to run until 31st May, meaning Reid would be eligible for the Play-Offs should the Addicks be involved.

A bitter pill to swallow Football fans can generally be categorised as those who see a cup half full and those who see a cup half empty.

But when the drink has been spiked it doesn’t matter how much was in it. The drink is ruined, and that is how this January transfer window feels.

Sheffield United were all set to be celebrating a very fruitful month in the transfer market, with the acquisitions of the inventive Mark Yeates, tough tackling left back Toni Kallio from Fulham, and bruising centre half Nyron Nosworthy from Sunderland.

This was until Harry Redknapp decided, just 50 minutes before the transfer deadline, to cut short Kyle Walker’s season long loan at Bramall Lane and call the young defender back to London.

The Sheffield-born right back has been one of our most impressive performers so far this season, and to lose him in such circumstances is fairly devastating.

I had always assumed that when a player is on a season long loan, the only instance in which he can be re-called is if they were to be sold on to another club. This has been the main argument thrown at those calling for a return of Billy Sharp to aid our promotion push.

It might have been that Spurs were only happy to let Walker come back to us on loan if a clause allowing his immediate recall was included, and we were willing to run that risk.

If this is the case then that decision has backfired.

It is a bitter pill to swallow but it must not be forgotten that we have made some decent moves to sure up our defence and breathe life into our attack in this January transfer window.

Being a Sheffield United fan, you get used to dealing with massive disappointment, just when you thought things were going well.

I sometimes wonder how we’d actually react if it was any other way.
