the week as well as weekends to make up for lost time. The marquees are being used to create an artificial climate to work in, making sure that temperatures stay high enough to lay the paving in the square and to protect the work already done from snow and rain. So rather than downing tools when a cold snap bites, workers can continue to get the square completed. Councillor Colin Ross, Cabinet Member for Employment, Enterprise and Development at Sheffield City Council said: “The cold weather has affected work on Tudor Square but the team have

done everything they can to get back on track. They’ve thought outside the box to make sure that they can get the maximum amount of work completed despite the continuing cold spell. We’re sorry for the inconvenience the continued works will be causing but I’m sure Sheffielders will be happy with the result when Tudor Square is finally revealed.“ Much of the programme of work on the square has been dictated by the delivery of the giant stone ‘boulders’ or planters. The precision stone cutting/shaping is controlled by state of the art robots but is still lubricated by water and this has also been

affected by the cold weather causing the water to freeze. The quarry is now working literally around the clock to produce the huge segments of stone, each one a unique shape. Discovery of an unrecorded electricity main at the corner of Norfolk St has also delayed work in that small area until Yorkshire Electricity were able to come out and make the cable safe. This project is supported financially by the European Union. The project has attracted £4.1 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.

10 Golden Rules for a Perfect Wedding 1. Personal recommendations are the best way to find reliable suppliers. Be sure to ask your family and friends if they know of any good wedding suppliers from car hire companies to caterers. If you are using a company you’re unfamiliar with, don’t be afraid to ask to speak to previous customers about their service. Reputable companies often have a collection of thank you letters from satisfied customers to put your mind at rest. 2. Always confirm everything in writing. Whenever you make a booking it’s worth taking the time to put all the details in writing. Make two copies so both of you and your supplier can see exactly what has been agreed and can refer to it when necessary. The same applies when paying for anything, even a deposit; make sure you get a receipt and keep it safe.

like a particular colour scheme or era. 6. Delegate! You may love the idea of organising your own wedding but if you’re not careful it could turn into a nightmare. By letting friends and family get involved you’ll have lots of fun as well as easing the workload. 7. Avoid family friction at all costs. The initial delight of your engagement can soon become a distant memory as everyone starts telling you how to plan your wedding. While it’s good to compromise in some situations make it clear from the start that it’s your big day and that you as a couple have the final say.

8. You don’t need to spend a fortune to have a spectacular wedding but you do need to plan your budget carefully. Think about which are the most important aspects of the day to help you decide where you want to splash out and 3. Start keeping a wedding folder so you where you can make savings. can collect all your ideas together in one place. If you see a picture in a magazine 9. An Open Mind

MUSICIANS INSURANCE

Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th Social opportunities abound this week. Go to as many parties and gatherings as possible, as you’re sure to meet some fantastic people. An old friendship could turn into a passionate romance quite unexpectedly. You’re not exactly sure what has changed between you, but mutual attraction is undeniable. Take into account how friends and loved ones might feel and don’t introduce your would be wooer until you’ve made a serious commitment to each other.

INTUITION

LISTENING TO YOUR INNER GUIDANCE! Part 2 An Intelligent Heart not only determine what comes to us but also shows us how or what we are manifesting. Listening to how we feel will determine where we are heading. If you are feeling great you will manifest great stuff if you’re not you won’t! Therefore if you want to manifest great stuff to yourself you have to be as much as possible in a good feeling place. Biologically we perform better when we start at this place. Our digestion and blood pressure all stabilise and become more productive when we get to this place. You can deliberately slow down your racing heart by altering your breathing. Caring and doing nice things for others, without control, is a way in which we can feel good and therefore reach our potential. Our heart wants to guide us away from stress and towards happiness. Therefore if something feels good it is right to pursue it as it will serve you well in the long run. It is ok to spend time on fun things. Stress is created by our perception of a situation not the situation itself. If you think that you have no time and are swamped with problems

you will become stressed which is counter productive. Releasing yourself of expectations will mean that you’ll get through the situation easier because you aren’t stressed and therefore productive. When you get yourself into a feel good place your heart and your head synchronise and you again become more productive. The scientific term for synchronisation within the universe is entrainment. At this point you will become inspired, healthier, productive and basically everything goes right. Ignoring negative thoughts and promptings are also a way in which we can move forward. Feelings happen before thought when we are presented with a situation. If we learn to listen to our heart before our mind we will avoid the panic a negative thought can deliver. Ask yourself what you feel like not what you think and you will see that you are always ok. As is the case within the universe everything is set to work perfectly for the highest good. Have some faith that if you go with the flow, so to speak all will be well.

A weekly column written by International Medium, Author & Visionary Joanne Gregory

Last week we looked at the reason we should listen to our heart for guidance and our well being, this week we are looking at how we do just that. Feelings, as we know, make life what it is but they are also vital in our connection with the universe and essential if we are to manifest anything into our life. We often refer to feeling with our heart. When we ‘care’ our heart shows the effect. Stress is so very prevalent in this day and age and it can completely disable us. Caring is the key to access the hearts intelligence yet over caring can be the biggest factor in stress, so we have to find the right balance. Often when we love someone we want to protect them and guide them in a direction that we ‘feel’ we know will be good for them. The truth of the matter is we have no rights to do so but we also have a very limited perspective of what others really need and therefore should avoid this pattern of control that will lead to stress for both parties. The following guidelines will allow you to access your hearts intelligence and be guided smoothly though life’s up and downs. Our thoughts and feelings

SINGING GROUP

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Getting some new career goals will give you the momentum you need. You’re tired of doing the same thing day after day. Fortunately, you’ve got a lot of experience over the past few years, and now you’re ready to put it to good use. Opportunities in broadcasting, air travel and research are highly favoured. You might also apply for a job in the arts. Turn a deaf ear to a male relative who thinks your plans are just so many fantastic fantasies. He’s afraid of your success. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st You feel rather restless and ill at ease so you’ll be more receptive to people who suggest you use your positive creative energies or organising abilities to teach or train others or mastermind a fund raising campaign to educate and train people overseas. Alternatively, adding to your own qualifications or gaining experience in a new job or professional position can give you the intellectual stimulation you need. Send out your applications now to maximise your chances.

CAR SPECIALISTS

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Your natural charm and nurturing ways have won you lots of friends in the past and the trend continues now. Lending a sympathetic ear to a friend, neighbour or fellow worker will win you a reputation for being a wise counsellor and a great source of sound advice and common sense. Later in the week you must resist an extravagant whim to splash out on something or someone in the hope that they will improve your life or make a dream come true. LEO July 24th - August 23rd It’s a great time to sign a contract, negotiate a deal or apply for a senior position. Working alongside a partner will boost your interests, both personal and professional. An engagement or marriage is also possible. If you’ve been dating someone special, you may feel you are now ready to take your relationship to the next level. It’s hard to contain your temper at an indecisive relative or neighbour. Don’t wait for them to make a choice if there’s a deadline involved. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd Stepping up your exercise regime will have quick and impressive results. You get a big boost from activities designed to lengthen and strengthen your muscles. Mix up your regimen as much as possible to stave off boredom. Silence that little seductive voice that has encouraged you to sleep in, put your feet up and generally laze around. An offer of a steady job could come your way that could spell an end to an economy drive and the start of more affluent times. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd A romance is taking off and you couldn’t be happier. It’s such a thrill to feel needed and desired. If you’ve been with your partner for some time, this would be a great opportunity to go on a romantic trip together. You’ll rediscover the passion that first drew you together. It’s more than likely that both of you may decide to build even firmer and longer lasting foundations together. Alternatively, you could collaborate on a creative project that draws both critical and commercial success. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd An upsurge of emotion causes you to make some important changes to your home life. If you’re thinking of moving or undertaking a decorating project, now is the time to get cracking. Painting your bedroom a beautiful colour can have a dramatic impact on your mood. Rich hues like cerise, midnight blue, or chocolate brown will put you in touch with your sensual side. News of a pregnancy or adoption makes you excited about the future. Young people lift your spirits. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st You’ll be quite busy this week, making the rounds of parties, work engagements and family gatherings. Fortunately, you’re an outgoing creature that thrives in the company of others. If you’ve been thinking about getting a new phone, PDA or computer, now is the time to do so. You can get a terrific deal if you’re willing to do a little research. It may be difficult to bring a project to conclusion, due to your scattered energy. Make time to focus exclusively on this job. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th A new opportunity to make money will bring you creative fulfilment, too. You’re starting to realise you can make a very nice living by using your artistic talent. There’s no reason why a capable person like you must stay in a boring job. It’s just a matter of taking a risk. People respect your leadership ability and are willing to pay you handsomely for it. If you’ve developed a crush on somebody, ask for a date now. Your charms are virtually irresistible. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th You’re ready to reinvent yourself in some dramatic way. Getting a radical makeover will ramp up your sex appeal. If you’re not sure where to begin, ask a trendsetting friend for advice. Some of their head turning ideas will sound perfectly daft, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you give them a try. You’ll be able to put your specialised knowledge to use this week. Your efforts will attract several impressive job offers. It’s time to move up the ladder of success. PISCES February 20th - March 20th A contemplative person like you needs to occasionally withdraw from the daily stress of life. Heading for a solitary retreat helps you recharge your batteries. If this means hiring a babysitter or taking a few days off work, so be it. You can’t continue to perform well if you’re stressed and anxious. Fortunately, extra cash is coming in from an inheritance, investment or refund. Use this sum to enjoy a little luxury. You’re long overdue for some pampering.

GLAMOUR GIRLS NIGHT IN! Spa At Home which caters for groups of ladies to hold pamper parties in their homes. The parties are a great idea to get friends and family together for birthdays, hen nights or just simply to catch up. It’s a great alternative to rowdy expensive bars where conversation is limited. There are a choice of two events. The Pamper Party is a great way to catch up with friends, while being pampered and having the opportunity to get glamorous with such treatments as manicures, pedicures, eyebrows / eyelashes, self tan, facials, and much more. This type of party is great for working people or busy mums who may find, keeping to a beauty salon appointment can be difficult due to commitments. This type of party tends to much more lively, with the “girls night out” CD playing some of the greatest songs. The other party event is the Spa Evening where such treatments as Indian Head Massage, Hot Stone, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Back Massage etc, can be taken as a treatment. The lighting is more subdued, the music more tranquil and calming, with the candles burning away the beautiful aroma of essential oils. The parties are just going from strength to strength, and getting 2-3 repeat bookings from guests at the party. Included in the price is to include, two treatments, wine, chocolate and a big deluxe robe. Visit www.spapartyathome. co.uk to see the list of tempting treatments available. The company set up by Julie Drummond who was really excited when she was funded by BIG (Chamber of Commerce) after they saw a gap in the market for businesses around Yorkshire, to really benefit from this service. A grant was contributed for marketing and promotional materials. With so much enthusiasm, coming from an industry of 20 years, including Spa Director in the Middle East, Cyprus, Mallorca, and other parts of Europe, where she set up destination spas in 5* hotels, health clubs. PJS MUSIC SERVICES GROWING NEW MARKETS

have great shop on High Street Dodworth. In an era when retail is not having the best of times and some of our longest established music shops have closed down PJS have moved to bigger premises, grown the business and won new customers. In addition to this from a music shop that specialised in brass and woodwind they have become well known for providing guitars, amps, drums

and percussion. Our involvement with PJS, on a professional level, came as a consequence of being asked where acts could buy spares, strings, drumsticks etc. after Reverb, formerly known as Academy of Sound, had closed on City Road. I’d known the owner of PJS, Phil Shaw, for years as he had been assistant principal cornet with the world famous Black Dyke Millls Band. It’s always

point, so when we played nobody really knew who we were at the time. This year we plan to change that and already have around 30 die hard Foreigner & Journey fans who have already booked to come over to support the band and we are hopeful that many more will make the decision to have a rocking week in the sun with us.’’ This week long event will take place in Lindos at St Paul’s bay where the stage backdrop is a stunning view of the bay and the ancient acropolis. For more information on the event and how to book through the band to get the best possible deals check out. www.aforeignersjourney.com Some 12 months on and following the band’s debut sell out show on the 10th January 09, the band have now played over 50

shows throughout the UK. In August 2009 the band joined forces with award winning singer/ songwriter Jimi Anderson whose vocals and stage presence are guaranteed to captivate you. Saxophone player Chris Backhouse completes this new and exciting line-up, taking this dual tribute show of Foreigner and Journey to another level. The band will be touring extensively throughout the UK in 2010 and now with the bands inclusion of this year’s Rhodes Rock event, A Foreigners Journey’s foundations seem to be firmly set alongside some of Europe’s most established and respected tribute bands around today.

If you look at the top of this page you will notice a new banner ad. and sponsor for the page. This is PJS Music Services who

A FOREIGNERS JOURNEY RETURN TO RHODES.. Yorkshire based band ‘A Foreigners Journey’ are set to return to the beautiful Greek Island of Rhodes again this summer to perform at ‘Rhodes Rock 2010’ music festival. Paul Flanaghan bass player for the band explains, ‘’we were added to the bill for last year’s event by the promoter at the very last minute, which we so grateful for but this left us with very little time to prepare considering that we had only been together as a band for around 5 months and had only done a handful of gigs at that

All nominations for the award, complete with name and address, can be submitted online at www.camra.org.uk/coty or sent to:

FREEDOM2 CHOOSE Saturday last it was the turn of The Handsworth Social Club to provide some of the best entertainment i’ve seen for some time. Stardust billed as a boy girl duo, were most definitely both male. Fantastic voices, plenty of movement and a good selection of songs. Anybody who gets three encores is definitely worthwhile. It was nice to see the club practically full. A big improvement of late. This club seems to be trying to actively attract people improving the quality of entertainment on offer, they have even put up a illuminated cabinet, on the outside of the premises, advertising forthcoming attractions. I notice that a group will be appearing towards the end of the month. Don’t know how long the cabinet will last without some sort of wire screen around to keep the vandals at bay. News from Denmark’s evidencebased review of their smoking ban will no doubt come as a shock to Health Secretary Andy Burnham who has announced plans in Britain to further tighten tobacco control, in an attempt to reduce the number of smokers to 10% of the population by 2020. Denmark currently allows smoking in smoking rooms and also in bars under a 40m2 serving area. Their law was reviewed after two years as planned in December 2009, and the ruling majority did not tighten their ban as everyone expected. The reasons for this decision were: 1. Several other European countries relaxed their ban in 2009 because of financial trouble in the hospitality businesses. Liechtenstein, Croatia and Bayern all relaxed their bans and the Czech Republic voted against a ban. Greece relaxed its ban and although a total ban has been announced in Spain, it has yet to be implemented. Politicians are very likely to do what other countries do. 2. The Health authority could not show any fewer heart attacks in the two years after the ban, which was reported to the parliament. The Health authority had expected this would happen – they almost promised it – leaving several politicians feeling that they were misled. 3. Those against the ban in Denmark made sure that their politicians knew about these things in detail – delivering the truth about the heart miracle studies from scientists and anti-tobacco professor Dr Siegel. 4. One of the two hospitality organizations in Denmark said that all the small smoking bars would close if the government tightened the ban further. They are now working to have further relaxation of the rules, i.e. to make it legal to serve food in the smoking rooms of restaurants within the limits of the law. Interestingly, many of the Danish politicians feel that their health authorities are ‘spamming’ them. One of their leading health politicians said of the top high-profile female anti-smoking lobbyist: “She is just saying the same thing every day in the press”. The Danish politicians also welcome the views of the anti-ban movement and do not take the view that the ‘debate is over’. Phil Johnson, chairman of Freedom2Choose asks, “Why do we not have smaller bars exempted or given choice? Why do we not have allowance for smoking rooms in larger pubs, clubs and restaurants? Why do we not follow the suit of most of our European counterparts who have quickly realised the dire economic impact of smoking bans? These latest proposals to reduce smoking prevalence to 10% are totally unattainable for you only have to see that smoking rates, after years of decline, have now increased since the implementation of our smoking ban in 2007. This appears to be the last desperate throw of the dice from a dying government hoping to appease the Health Lobby.”

Weekly Fun

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS What is it when a man talks dirty to a woman? Sexual Harassment. What is it when a woman talks dirty to a man? £3.99 a minute.

What’s the fastest way to a man’s heart? Through his chest with a sharp knife. Why is it so hard for women to find men that are sensitive, caring and good-looking? Because those men already have boyfriends. How do men sort their laundry? Filthy” and “Filthy but Wearable” What’s the difference between a new husband and a new dog? After a year, the dog is still excited to see you. What makes men chase women they have no intention of marrying? The same urge that makes dogs chase cars they have no intention of driving. What is the difference between a battery and a man? A battery has a positive side. Do you know the punishment for bigamy? Two mothers-in-law. How many men does it take to open a beer? None. It should be opened by the time she brings it. Why do women have smaller feet than men? It’s one of those “evolutionary things” that allows them to stand closer to the kitchen sink.

I must confess to a bit of self interest when I recommended Sunny Daye as a top act to the White Swanin Dronfield, although I have to say that a small advertisement in this newspaper would have more than doubled the attendance. Sunny is a quality performer and she certainly did not disappoint gettingrapturous applause after each number. I had arranged to meet Cassie Kennedy, and it was great to see her performing a couple of numbers with Sunny, These two high personality girls really bounced off eachother, and who knows, a new duo may be formed in the future. Both have promised to appear in my proposed benefit night later in the year for Mercury life time achievement winner, Glen Dale, who sadlyhad to have his leg amputated last year. The wintry weather keeps coming and going which must be a nightmare for the councils who have run out of salt I notice more and more people buying wild bird food to keep our feathered friends well fed during the inclement weather. I have had a robin, who I understand are very territorial, in my garden this winter, and I saw some great tits this week. The big football story of the week is that of Chelsea footballer, John Terry being sacked as Englandfootball captain. England manager, Fabio Capello had no mercy, not surprising as he looks the type of man who would

frown on an overdue library book. I have to ask though, what is his crime to have topay such a high price? He has succumbed to a temptation which would test the most faithful red bloodedmale. His punishment lies for the rest of his life from his wife, who will bring it up every time they have anargument. He will not want to jump ship as he has children, and although his wife is a decent girl who would not deprive him of good access, it is not the same as everyday contact, I just don’t see this as a scandal. What is scandalous however is the fact that many members of parliament caught up in the expenses fiddle will leave the House of Commons with a big pay off. The cost of paying off the seventy three who have had to return their ill gotten gains is close on thirty million pounds. At least by deducting what they owe from their retirement payoff, it guarantees that all the money is repaid. The forthcoming Grand Variety Performance to raise funds for the Radio Sheffield Children’s Hospital Scannerappeal looks like it is going to be a super night, with the fantastic Billy Pearce headlining, Billy is a tremendous lad . I remember only too well ten years ago when the founder of our newspaper, Phil Booker, booked Billy to star in a charity show at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. on a fee of fifteen hundred

pounds. The event was poorly attended, and when Billy looked out on the audience offered to reduce his fee to four hundred pounds. Phil Booker, an honourable mandeclined on the basis that a deal was deal, and after a lot of conversation a fee of a thousand pounds was agreed. When Phil handed over the grand, Billy immediately contributed six hundred pounds to the charity. This gesturesays much about this super guy. The undercard for this event is fantastic, with top local comedian Jimmy Carol appearing with One Way, Gary Phillips, The New Chevrons, Stephanie King’s Stageshow, Carlo Santana and Whizzkid.I attended the fortieth birthday celebration of my good friend Mick Birks, nephew of top singer songwriter Vincent,Celebrities in attendance included John Reilly and Cary Bayliss from Acoustic Angels and Diana Edwards from top Abbatribute band Bjorn Again. The evening was fabulous filling the White Swan Dronfield to capacity. An invitation I received was this week addressed to Uncle Howard made me particularly happy as it was from soon to be three years old twinsJaycee and Evie who, as a father of twins myself, are very dear to my heart. They are absolute sweethearts and I am looking forward to celebrating with them, when a clown has been booked.

If your dog is barking at the back door and your wife is yelling at the front door, whom do you let in first? The dog of course. He’ll shut up once you let him in. What’s worse than a Male Chauvinist Pig? A woman that won’t do what she’s told. I married Miss Right, I just didn’t know her first name was Always. I haven’t spoken to my wife for 18 months. I don’t like to interrupt her. What do you call a man who has lost 95% of his intelligence? Divorced. Scientists have discovered a food that diminishes a woman’s sex drive by 90%. It is called Wedding Cake. Marriage is a 3-ring circus: Engagement Ring Wedding Ring, Suffering.

and drummer Omar Abdid. Realising they needed a bass player to enter the studio, a schoolmate of Westaway’s, Dan Haigh, soon joined Fightstar’s ranks. Rehearsing and playing as often as Simpson’s Busted schedule would allow, things quickly got more serious and it became apparent that a decision regarding the band’s future had to be made. Simpson ultimately left Busted - the group officially called it quits in early 2005 - and he looked eagerly ahead to life with Fightstar. The guys began making a name for themselves around England, both playing the Reading and Leeds Festival. Charlie Simpson could almost be accused of underestimating the challenges the band faced during the recording of “be human”, their third album and first self-funded release. After parting company with Gut Records, at the end of 2008, the band decided to release “be human” in partnership with their

management company, Raw Power, on a brand new label – Search And Destroy. “The music industry is changing and bands have to change with it,” says Westaway, “We realised we needed to be in control.” That new found control has extended to the recording of the new record. After working with Colin Richardson (Funeral For A Friend) and Matt Wallace (Faith No More) on their previous two albums, the band opted to co-produce “be human” with long time friend of the band, Laruso guitarist Carl Bown. Simpson says, “We were incredibly lucky to work with two of the best producers in rock. We learned so much from them that it felt like the time to try doing it ourselves. Carl did an exceptional job.” But the record was almost not completed at all when drummer Omar Abidi broke his wrist almost halfway through the process. “It was a full break, there was no touching bone,” Abidi says with a wince, “I

had to have an emergency operation a week later to put two pins in my wrist.” Drums had only been recorded for six tracks – recording had hit a roadblock. But rather than recruit a replacement or delay recording, the band decided, as Simpson puts it, “to keep it in the family”. While recording was a physical struggle, “be human” was free of the artistic frustrations that dogged the band’s previous albums. Simpson says, “It was great to not have anyone breathing down our necks. With our second album [One Day Son, All This Will Be Yours] I didn’t like some of the mixes the label had done and all hell broke lose. Carl was the one who redid them. On this record, we’ve nailed the sound we wanted to create when we started as a band.”

and is released on Hadouken!’s own Surface Noise Recordings. ‘For The Masses’ is a landmark modern dance-rock album that cements their reputation, as Britain’s most forward-thinking and dynamic young band. The band embark on a European tour in February 2010, and it all kicks off at The Leadmill on Feb 16th. Primarily the band are based in Leeds. They formed after

James Smith and Daniel “Pilau” Rice met at Leeds University, where they set up their own Label, Surface Noise Records. After forming the label, Smith began writing and demoing the first Hadouken! tracks. And In February 2007 Hadouken! released a two song vinyl with the song “That Boy That Girl”, which gained popularity after the video, directed by friend Bob Harlow,

made it onto MTV2. If you are wondering about that name? The band’s name comes from a special move - a throwing fireball attack called “the Hadouken” - in the video game “Street Fighter”. (Now you know).

reviews by presley artist: Kasabian single:Vlad the ImpalerFeb release date: Mon 15th

artist: Peter Gabriel album Scratch My BackFeb release date: Mon 15th

For us here at Drag, Kasabian were possibly the best band last year. Their album was head and shoulders above their competition and they really seemed to come of age. They suddenly sounded more accomplished, more polished, but with a slightly dirtier rock and roll edge to them and less of that indie vibe. For me personally their single ‘Fire’ was one of the two best singles of the year along with Muse’ ‘Uprising’. So I was more than happy to hear a new single was being released. This is possibly the least commercial song they’ve bought out. It starts of with the dirtiest guitar sound you’re ever likely to hear and then the vocal at first is a slightly distant (sung in another room) kinda vibe. It then transcends into a rock n’ roll Black Grape with even elements of U2 (I think I may get lambasted for that comment, but I mean it in a complimentary way, even the guitar is a tad The Edge). Plus the string synth sound at the end out is absolutely gorgeous. This is so catchy its ridiculous, plus it’s an oddity in parts and that’s why I love it!

From Genesis to his solo career, Gabriel has always been fascinating to me. His off the wall musical style has always intrigued me. His live shows have always been stunning, I urge you to try and see his last tour on Youtube or DVD or wherever you can find it, he walks upside down in the middle of the air!?!? I don’t know how it was done but it’s incredible. Anyway, onto ‘Scratch My Back’. This is a really unusual concept. It’s the first part of a series of song exchanges in which Peter and other leading artists reinterpret each other’s songs. To help craft his recording of the album’s eclectic array of cult favourites and classic tracks, Gabriel enlisted former Durutti Column member John Metcalfe, composer, arranger and the expertise of producer Bob Ezrin [Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’, Lou Reed’s ‘Berlin’] and engineer, mixer and producer Tchad Blake [Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits]. Gabriel describes this as a very personal record with twelve songs performed only with orchestral instruments and voice. He made the choice not to include guitar or drums. The album’s richly diverse sounds include the sparse romance of Lou Reed’s ‘The Power of the Heart’, the powerful musical journey of Elbow’s ‘Mirrorball’ and an epic arrangement of Arcade Fire’s ‘My Body Is A Cage’). There is also a cover of Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ which is being used to help the aid effort for the people of Haiti. What you get with this album is pure beauty; to hear songs done with no uniform rhythm section seems totally normal in this case because Gabriel is so clever and talented. His voice is as passionate as I’ve ever heard him. This could be one of the albums of this year. It is absolutely incredible!

artist: Mika s single: Blame it on the Girl release date: Mon 15th Feb Sometimes brilliant, sometimes annoying as hell. What do we have this time around then I hear you ask? Not annoying………good start, no ridiculous screeching high voice antics. Average song though, instantly forgettable………..so a bad end sadly.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 24 This week was the first of our extra outside collections and could we have picked a better day?! A cold, dank Saturday morning on the Tanyard shopping centre at Wickersley in Rotherham for collections raised an extra £83.77 towards the running costs of the station. Thank you to everyone who donated and also to those who volunteered their time to help out on such a terrible day. Lets hope next week is a bit warmer… It was an ice hockey double bill this week, with the Sheffield Steelers in action on Wednesday evening in the Challenge Cup semi-final first leg against the Nottingham Panthers. As always great rivalry when these two come together but the Steelers were second best on the night as the Panthers took a 4-2 lead into the second

leg. Then on Saturday it was back to Elite league action against the Belfast Giants with the game underway with a much anticipated bust up between the two teams enforcers it wasn’t a good night again for the Steelers as it finished 3-1 to the title-chasing Giants. We had commentary of both games on Radio Nightingale for the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital and there’ll be more on Saturday as the Panthers return to the House of Steel in league action. There’s still time to register for our Challenge 2010, our sponsored run or walk over either 4km or 10km in June. In association with the Foundation for Social Improvement we are looking for people to raise money for Radio Nightingale by taking part in Challenge 2010. The event is a sponsored walk or run over two distances, either 4km or 10km taking in the fantastic scenery of Derbyshire. The event takes place on Saturday 5 June 2010 finishing at Thornbridge Hall with a BBQ and drinks. There’s no entrance fee or minimum sponsorship

level but places are limited so if you are interested in taking part in this fantastic fundraising opportunity, please get in touch with us as soon as possible either by telephone on 01709 304244 or by email to info@ radionightingale.org.uk to register your interest so that you can start collecting your sponsors. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk Current volunteer vacancies: • Saturday sports show pre senter • Football commentator • Request collector (Tuesday or Wednesday morning) • Fundraiser • MW transmitter engineer • Voice over artist / creator Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering

Rotherham United crashed to their second consecutive league defeat after a 2-0 loss at Darlington. The home side netted either side of half time with goals from Tadhg Purcell and Gareth Waite to leave the Millers in fifth place in League Two. Rotherham had plenty of possession but struggled throughout to create any clear cut chances, with Quakers ‘keeper Shane Redmond barely having a save to make. The signs looked good at the start for the Millers when they created an opening after four minutes. Gavin Gunning’s header forward was seized upon by Adam Le Fondre and his cross to the far post just eluded Tom Pope. Darlington began to come into the match with Purcell missing a great chance when he dragged his shot across goal on 19 minutes. Two minutes later Purcell redeemed himself when he burst into the area before firing past Andy Warrington via a deflection. Danny Harrison almost put the Millers level when Redmond was stranded outside of his goal but the Millers midfielder couldn’t find the net with a shot on the run from fully 40 yards. The Millers’ only other chance before the interval came late on when Pablo Mills connected firmly with a volley from 20 yards but his effort flew over the bar. Darlington added a second seven minutes into the second half. The awkward front man Mor Diop had LOCAL SPORT NEWS

an effort saved by Warrington low down with the ball rebounding to the striker, who laid the ball to Waite for a simple tap-in. The Millers responded and picked up the tempo but couldn’t create anything of any real substance. On 56 minutes Le Fondre looked like he was in on goal but a fantastic last ditch challenge by Ian Miller denied the prolific marksman. It coud have been worse for the Millers when sub Nathan Mulligan had an effort smothered by Warrington, with Nick Fenton clearing the rebound. Le Fondre was denied a late consolation when he skied an effort after being put through on goal. Darlington: Redmond; Miller, Madden, White, Giddings, J. Smith (Gray 84), Dempsey, Waite, Diop (Deane 61), Purcell, Main (Mulligan 70). Subs not used: Liversedge, G. Smith, Groves, Byrne. Rotherham: Warrington; Tonge, Fenton, Sharps, Gunning, Law, Mills (Roberts 55), Cummins (Broughton 61), Harrison (Marshall 74), Pope, Le Fondre. Subs: Taylor, Lund, Ellison, Joseph.

Millers not good enough, says Ronnie Ronnie Moore was once again scathing at his players performance after the Millers fell to their second consecutive league defeat away at Darlington. Goals from Tadhg Purcell and Gareth Waite were enough to see off the Millers who struggled to create any clear cut chances. “It was embarrassing,” admitted Ronnie after the game. “I am embarrassed to lose six points to the bottom of the league and if the players aren’t embarrassed then they want locking up. We changed the system today to try and get the ball on the floor but we kept pumping balls long. We have got players here who can play, pass, move and shoot but we just didn’t see that today. We are miles better than that but we are off the pace at the moment, it’s a matter of getting the players in and working hard, that starts tomorrow.” Darlington ‘keeper Shane Redmond had very little to do which displeased Moore but he was also disappointed with the defending on both Darlington goals: “We didn’t test the goalkeeper but to be fair I don’t think our ‘keeper has had many saves to make,” added Ronnie. “The goals we gave away were comical. We couldn’t deal with the long ball into the box for the first and the lad scores, we had four or five chances to clear the second goal and we didn’t. When we did have a couple of half chances Alfie has put them past the post, on another day he scores.”

ISSUE 835

STEELERS END THE WEEK BETTER THAN THEY STARTED IT The Sheffield Steelers’ week certainly improved over time, after an abysmal defeat to the Nottingham Panthers on Wednesday in the Challenge Cup Semi Finals, they drew with the Belfast Giants on Saturday, and beat the Irish side on Sunday, rounding off a grueling six games in ten days. Yet another “Biggest game of the season” came and went at the Arena on Wednesday, and Sheffield netminder Andrew Verner would probably rather forget his 100th EIHL game, as the Steelers were 3-0 down by the end of the first period, and 4-0 down with just three minutes remaining on the clock. Goals from Jay Henderson, Cameron Mann and Marty Gascon put the Panthers ahead in the first 20 minutes. The second period passed with no goals for either side, and with just over a minute gone in the third period David Clarke fired home the Panthers’ fourth goal, much to the dismay of the home crowd. All was not lost, however, as Joey Talbot scored the Steelers’ first goal at 57:00, and soon after Steelers’ tough guy Mike Sgroi was brought down in sight of the goal and awarded a penalty shot. Jonathan Zion stepped up to take the shot and scored, giving the Steelers hope as they go into Nottingham on the 10th for the second leg of the semi final. On Saturday the Belfast Giants came to the Sheffield Arena, for the first of a double-header weekend. As pre-arranged via the Steelers radio show on BBC Radio Sheffield, the two teams’ big guns, Mike Sgroi in the Steelers’ corner and Sean McMorrow in the Giants’

corner, started the game with a fight, Sgroi not even bothering to get into position for the face-off, preferring to stand in preparation for the fight instead. Sadly for Steelers fans it was Sgroi who hit the ice first, both players picking up fighting majors with 00:01 on the clock. Neither team scored in the opening period, though the Steelers were out-shot 13-8. Joey Talbot opened the scoring for the Steelers in the second period, before the Giants drew level with a goal from Colin Shields. McMorrow was spoken to by officials on more than one occasion for leaning so far over the Giants’ bench in an attempt to converse with Steelers’ Captain Jonathan Phillips, and Jason Hewitt, but it was Randy Dagenais who would be the one in a scuffle before the end of the game. It took until 50:26 for the next goal, and when it came it was for the Giants, Pat Bateman scoring for the visitors before Pierre-Luc Faubert scored an empty-netter with just four

seconds on the clock. Sunday brought the second game of the double header, and it was almost 15 minutes before one of the sides gave up a goal, with Steelers’ Jonathan Zion scoring past Stephen Murphy in the Giants’ net. The Giants soon leveled the scores with a goal from Jeff Szwez, but Kevin Bolibruck put the Steelers back in the lead going into the second period. Once again the Giants drew level as Szwez added his second of the night, but the Steelers soon took the lead once again with a goal from Jeff Legue on the powerplay. Doug Sheppard gave the Steelers further advantage with a goal in the 47th minute, but the Giants pulled one back at 58:58. The Steelers are in action at the Arena once again this weekend, with a game on Saturday February 13th against their biggest rivals, the Nottingham Panthers. Tickets are available from the Sheffield Arena Box Office (0114 256 56 56).

Sheffield Wednesday went down to an unfortunate defeat against high-flying Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday. The Owls seemed to have secured a point when in-form hitman Luke Varney cancelled out Dexter Blackstock’s first half opener from the penalty spot. But Forest striker Blackstock had the final word, claiming a late winner to settle an entertaining contest that SWFC dominated in part. And despite the narrow loss, there were plenty of positives for newly crowned Manager of the Month Alan Irvine to take as his side gave promotion hopefuls Forest one of their toughest tests of the season so far. Wednesday made one change from the side that beat Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough last weekend as Frank Simek returned to the right back berth following Lewis Buxton’s hamstring injury. That switch aside, it was as you were for the Owls in the Midlands to face a Forest side out to get back on track after suffering their first defeat in 20 games at local rivals Derby County - and their first league loss in almost a year. Wednesday opened with a Varney snapshot that Lee Camp saved comfortably and the visitors continued on the front foot through the early exchanges, albeit without causing any undue concern in the Forest half. When Forest ventured up front, the Owls’ defence held firm as Irvine’s side looked well organised all over the pitch. Chances were at a premium at both ends until Forest were awarded a penalty midway through the half. Blackstock thumped a shot into the arm of Darren Purse and the Wednesday skipper could count himself unfortunate to see the referee point to the spot. Penalty duty fell to Blackstock, who calmly dispatched past Lee Grant from 12 yards. Forest were duly buoyed and Nathan Tyson tested Grant with a low drive from distance moments later before Robert Earnshaw sent a halfchance high into the 4,000 travelling Wednesdayites packed behind Grant’s goal. The Owls needed a response and almost got it as Luke Varney forced an excellent save from Camp after the loanee

striker slipped his marker in the penalty area. The hosts were undaunted, though, and Grant had to be alert to parry Robert Earnshaw’s curling free kick to safety. Wednesday started the second half as they did the first and came close to restoring parity three minutes in. Darren Potter lofted a 25-yard free kick goalwards but the ball deflected from the wall and onto the crossbar with Camp flat-footed. The Owls continued to press as Forest struggled to make an impression in the final third but that said, the hosts’ rearguard was also largely untroubled after the scare from Potter. Irvine sent on Leon Clarke and Etienne Esajas to add some attacking impetus and the move paid dividends as Esajas was instrumental in hauling Wednesday level on 74 minutes. The Dutchman drilled a low shot across goal that fell kindly to Varney, who made no mistake with a firm finish past Camp. But just as the Owls threatened to really turn the screw, Forest scored from their first meaningful attack of the second half on 79 minutes. Chris Cohen sent a dangerous free kick into the box and although Grant kept out Blackstock’s low header, the keeper could do nothing to prevent the hitman pouncing on the rebound to double his tally and secure three valuable points. Irvine: ‘we deserved something’ Alan Irvine was left disappointed to leave the City Ground empty handed on Saturday evening after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. A penalty incorrectly awarded to Forest after Darren Purse tried to avoid Dexter Blackstock’s first half shot saw the home side go 1-0 up against the run of play and Irvine was gravely disappointed to be on the end of referee, Trevor Kettle’s wrong decision to give a spot kick. “There was only man who thought that was a penalty and unfortunately it was given,” Irvine told press after the match. “I have watched the incident again and the ball hit Darren Purse on the back. But even with the ones that do strike players’ arms in those circumstances you’re never quite sure what is going to be given; often it isn’t a penalty and sometimes it is a penalty. I really wish that could be cleared up once and for all. Irvine had been encouraged by his team’s performance at Forest, as the Owls were on top for long spells of the game. Wednesday equalised through Luke Varney inside the last 20 minutes of the game but Blackstock pounced from a set piece to score his second of the match and secure all three points five minutes later. “I thought that for ten or 15 minutes after conceding the penalty it did affect us a bit,” Irvine admitted. “We got a little bit wrapped up in contesting every decision the referee made at that point but we got our concentration and our focus back at half time. We talked about a few things that were important tactically and I thought we were in the ascendency in the second half. “I have been here a number of times and Forest have been terrific here. I thought we gave them a lot more problems than I have seen any other team give them this season so I was pleased about that. “I felt we thoroughly deserved something from the game. I am not saying we deserved to win but I thought we might win having got to 1-1 because we were on the front foot at the time. I don’t know if Lee Grant actually had a save to make in the second half other than conceding the goal.” Irvine added: “When you put into context how good Forest are I thought it was a very good performance. They are a really good team and I think Billy has got them playing very well. I think they will have an excellent chance of getting automatic promotion. Taking all that into consideration I think our lads did very well to have them on the back foot as much as we did.” The Owls boss, who was named as the Coca-Cola Championship’s Manager of the Month just before kick-off, will now be focussing on his players’ recovery and quickly switching his attentions to Tuesday evening’s encounter with Blackpool at Hillsborough.

Irvine scoops Manager of the Month After a storming start as manager of Sheffield Wednesday, Alan Irvine has been announced as the Championship Manager of the Month for January. Irvine was appointed as the new Wednesday manager one week prior to his first league match in charge against Barnsley. The Owls were rooted in the bottom three upon Irvine’s arrival but the former Preston boss hit the ground running and steered Wednesday to four wins from five games. Against the odds, Wednesday recorded back to back away victories against Barnsley and Blackpool before beating Peterborough United on home soil. Despite defeat to Scunthorpe United, the Owls retuned to winning ways against Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough. Irvine said: “It’s a fantastic start and the award is a mark of the players working really hard and the staff working really hard behind the scenes. We’re all going to have to do this again from now until the end of the season so that we can get to where we want to be.” Also short-listed for the January award were Dave Jones of Cardiff City, Billy Davies of Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe United’s Nigel Adkins. Alan Curbishley, chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: “Alan Irvine has done remarkably well in double-quick time since taking the reins at Sheffield Wednesday. His side are now out of the relegation places and can look forward to the rest of the season with great optimism.”

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

Written by Bunsen Bob

As we approach the business end of the season the time has come to check all other relegation candidates’ fixtures and results as intently as we check our own. I still believe we’ll be OK due to our own endeavours and we’ll get by without relying on winners from Chad Bond, Romone Rose or the brilliantly named Cedric Van Der Gun to save our souls. However, it’s also a boost to hear a rival losing and knowing that they have slipped deeper into the mire due to poor performances by Pim Balkestein, Hameur Bouazza or Eddie Oshodi. I often wonder why football grounds have stopped displaying the latest scores on placards at the side of the pitch (on the North Stand side if I remember rightly), each with a corresponding letter assigned to each fixture that is clearly labelled in the matchday programme. It will give a boost to programme sales, relieve reliance on our Spectrum style scoreboard and give a little rustic feel to the ground – a welcome reminder of what is was like to see such Wednesday greats as Malcom Darling, Ivor Seemley and Harold Wilcockson. As all eyes turn to another hectic month of vitally important fixtures, we’re all hoping for a better performance from the officials who goofed up at the City Ground. Let’s hope for refs in the ilk of former whistlers including Roger Furnandiz, Lester Shapter and Billy Bombroff. What a wonderfully exotic game it is we all love.

WILLIAMSON GRABS LAST MINUTE POINT Derby-born Lee Williamson grabbed United’s late leveller in Saturday’s Championship encounter. The midfielder struck in injurytime to ensure that United’s hard work was rewarded with a point. After going 592 minutes without conceding in the league at Bramall Lane, Robbie Savage gave Derby the lead before United bossed the second half. Nosworthy, Kallio and Yeates all made their full home debuts and Evans was recalled for the home encounter. The injured duo of Morgan and Harper missed out, whilst Ward and Geary dropped to the bench. Derby gave a full debut to former Blade Tonge, whilst Hulse also started. With only three recognised defenders in the starting eleven, the visitors would have been wondering how United would line up and it was quickly evident that Montgomery would start at rightback with Nosworthy and Kallio the new pairing in central defence. Evans joined Henderson - captain the absence of Monday - in attack, with Cresswell switching to the left side of midfield. With a completely different back four from the one that started the previous home game, it was understandable that they would take time to gel, although the visitors almost took advantage. On three minutes Stewart’s quick free-kick backfired and after Commons outstripped Kallio down the flank, his cross was deflected just wide at the near post by Hulse. The Derby striker, and Nosworthy, connected with Bunn in the incident and the Blades goalkeeper needed treatment before continuing. United were appealing for a penalty soon after when Yeates was impeded by McEveley from Cresswell’s cross but there was no award and the subsequent shot by Williamson was snuffed out. Worse was to follow as Derby netted with their next opportunity - a speculative effort.

With 17 minutes gone, the Blades half-cleared a throw-in from the left but the ball fell invitingly for SAVAGE to hammer back a first-time effort, who flew beyond Bunn’s right hand and into the net. In less than a minute after the restart, United had a chance to respond. Yeates, prominent early on, provided a cross from the right and after Henderson headed down, the difficult to control shot from Williamson was just wide. The dangerous Commons got the better of Nosworthy and saw his shot turned around the post by Bunn as the goal boosted the visitors. Pearson was also causing problems on the left flank. The name of Williamson was the first to be taken by referee Salisbury, for either a foul on Commons or subsequent dissent, whilst the Derby player was soon back on his feet and forcing Bunn into another save. As the interval drew near the Blades began to push the visitors back but a number of stray passes and break downs in communication on the pitch ensured that the half-time whistle was greeted with indications of displeasure by Unitedites. Blackwell sent out the same eleven for the second period and the Blades continued with the same momentum they finished the first half, although Derby created the first chance, Green sweeping Tonge’s cross onto the roof of the net. Yeates was keen to get on the ball but he was unable to trouble Bywater with two shots early in the second half. The first, after getting the better of Savage, was well off target with his unfavoured left foot and the second was a 25-yard free-kick which flew over the crossbar. Kallio was the second to be booked, again for a foul on Commons, whilst Bunn needed more treatment, the result of the early clash, and also relinquished goalkicking duties.

Ward taking the place of Henderson, with Cresswell moving to a central role, was boss Blackwell’s first change and Montgomery was again the replacement captain. A forced change was next, with Bunn finally succumbing and Bennett taking over in goal, whilst the manager’s final throw of the dice was introducing Camara for Evans. The majority of the attacking intent was now coming from United and a double chance on 72 minutes left the home fans wondering when a change of luck was coming. In a similar fashion to how Savage gave Derby the lead, Stewart’s long range effort was parried by Bywater and the follow up, from Camara, was kept out by a combination of the goalkeeper and Buxton. United’s opportunities continued but the clock was ticking down. From a Yeates corner, Stewart swept the ball wide at the near post and a good move between substitutes Ward and Camara went unrewarded. On 85 minutes the hard-working Yeates danced through the midfield but from his lay-off Camara’s shot was blocked by McEveley and then, from an accurate Quinn cross, Cresswell headed wide, under pressure from two defenders. Just before the fourth official announced that five injury-time minutes would be played, Quinn’s powerful effort struck Barker but United’s endeavour was finally rewarded in the first minute of the additional period. Yeates was again involved, trying to forage his way through the Derby defence and Camara was also well-placed but the ball dropped nicely for WILLIAMSON, who composed himself before firing under the body of Bywater. In the final minute of the additional time United went close once more, Buxton deflecting Williamson’s cross into the arms of Bywater, but despite picking up just a point, the Blades fans were appreciative of the efforts at the final whistle.

Gaffer’s verdict Kevin Blackwell made no attempt to gloss over United’s overall performance against Derby County but insisted that they were worth a draw in the end because of their second-half efforts. Lee Williamson’s last minute equaliser brought the reward that consistent late pressure deserved, despite a disjointed display: “We weren’t very good and Derby were better than us for probably 60% of the match. But we turned it round, had the better chances and deserved the point for perseverance. “There was tremendous block against Camara, Cresswell went close and there were a couple of saves and blocks as well. “I was disappointed with the goal we conceded because we know Robbie Savage lurks in that area and we had worked on stopping that in training “We are having to make too many changes again which is affecting confidence, and sometimes you accept a point because of the circumstances. The crowd got on the players’ backs at times but I am pleased that they didn’t buckle. “We are having a bad spell, we know that, but there is a lack of understanding because of the changes, and with what has happened to Morgan, and now Bunn and Harper I am going to have to make more. “There are players playing out of position in the back four, we had three players in Yeates, Kallio and Nosworthy making their home debuts, and you just don’t get an instant understanding. “It was probably a wake-up call to the new lads to learn what it is like to be a Sheffield United player in terms of what is expected of them by ourselves and the supporters. “I said at half-time that courage comes in many guises in football. It might mean making a tackle or a header, but when the crowd is restless and the form isn’t there it is sometimes getting on the ball and playing a pass. And if it doesn’t come off and the crowd have a go, it is having the nerve and confidence to keep trying it. “Lee Williamson took 45 minutes to really get going but after that he got on the ball more and he has a goal in him as we saw.” With James Harper ruled out with and ankle injury, Lee Williamson came in whilst Nick Montgomery was switched to right-back: “I have a couple who can play there but they are not really ready and I needed someone who was playing every week, especially as the defence didn’t know each other anyway.” Mark Bunn, replaced by Ian Bennett after 68 minutes, was damaged in the third minute in a collision with Rob Hulse but carried on bravely until forced to succumb: “He got a deadleg on each thigh and bent a finger back in the same incident, and he did well to carry on like he did. He looks likely to be out on Tuesday at Preston but he is a tough character and we will have to see how he responds. “It was doubly unfortunate for us because I wanted to use a third outfield substitute to try something else but couldn’t when ‘Benno’ had to go on.”

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

They said the Titanic was the unsinkable ship An immovable machine, completely impenetrable to anything that could be thrown at it. Similar maxims were applied to Sheffield United’s back line that finished last season so strongly, but just like the Titanic, that defence is now foundering with little sign of imminent reprieve. There have been times throughout the last twelve months when Kevin Blackwell has spoken of a supreme confidence in the Blades’ ranks, and sure belief that the team can beat anyone. It is at times like this, when the Blades’ defensive set up is about as watertight as the beaten Titanic, that Blackwell’s brazen confidence seems somewhat misjudged. There has been a catalogue of errors, misfortune and forced decisions that has decimated our rearguard. Of the ‘Famous Five’ that made us solid last season, not one of them is currently in the team. The young starlets Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton were both shipped out to Tottenham for around £10 million, a move we were told was vital for our long term financial stability. Fans frustrations surrounding this deal were tempered by the agreement that Walker would come back to the Lane on a season long loan. But like a colossal iceberg looming out of the darkness, Walker’s urgent recall has left us severely dented. The loss of Matt Kilgallon is appreciable in isolation. The ambitious defender wanted out with his sights on Premier League football, but the failure to adequately replace him rankles. We are still without Paddy Kenny, serving time for ‘Calpol’ misdemeanours, and amongst all these omissions, we have now lost Chris Morgan to injury for up to two months, the one man that in all adversity can hold us together. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that we are a sinking ship, but in the last twelve months we have hit our fair share of icebergs, and you just wonder if enough lifeboats exist to bring us through it unscathed.
