Following Russell Howard’s sell out debut show at Sheffield Arena in 2009, the comedian has announced that he will return to South Yorkshire in 2011 when he brings his Right Here Right Now Tour to the Arena on Thursday 17th February 2011. Tickets priced £25 (may be subject to booking fee) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 26th March. In addition to his live work, Russell has his own BBC Three show, Russell Howard’s Good News. Russell also has two bestselling DVDs to his name, 2008’s Russell Howard Live and 2009’s Russell Howard Live - Dingledodies, both of which were the fifth highest selling stand up titles of their respective years. Russell is a regular on Mock The Week (BBC Two’s highest rating comedy show, which has seen viewing figures of over 5
million per week), and has twice appeared on Live At The Apollo (BBC ONE) alongside some of the biggest names in comedy. This year he cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End for Sport Relief as part of a team which included DAVID WALLIAMS, JIMMY CARR, and MIRANDA HART. help local businesses thrive too.” Sheffield City Council wants to involve local people and businesses early on in the process, so that the overall strategy to improve district and local centres is a direct result of what local people tell us. Cllr Scriven added: “Our aim is that that every community will have an attractive and thriving centre that acts as a focal point. A local space where people can live, work, shop and relax. We want centres that enable businesses and public services to cater to the needs of the surrounding communities - and enhance people’s daily lives. “In order to do that, we need Sheffielders to tell us what they want from their district and local centres, so that we can start planning to make district and local centres the hubs of the city’s communities.”

we have seen a great deal of investment and improvement in the city centre, as part of our plans to boost the city’s economy. We now have public space and facilities in the city centre that Sheffielders can rightly be proud of. We want to take the same approach to improve district and local centres across the city, so that local people benefit by having easy access to good quality facilities, including: shops, libraries, schools, post offices, community buildings and health centres. We also want to reduce congestion across the city and cut Sheffield’s carbon footprint, which we can only do if people can access the services they need in the area they live in. “Taking this approach will also bring learning, work and enterprise opportunities closer to where people live, which is not only good for residents but will

Sheffield residents and businesses are being asked to help develop ambitious plans to create thriving district and local centres, across the whole of the city. The Council, through the city’s seven Communities Assemblies, will be consulting extensively with Sheffielders to develop a new, citywide approach to improving district and neighbourhood centres, so local people can benefit by having easy access to high quality local facilities and services. Councillor Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We want local people and business to be at the heart of developing this strategy. We need their opinions about which centres matter, what needs to be improved and where public investment should be prioritised. “Over recent years,

Band: The Automatic Venue: O2 Academy, Sheffield Date: 18/03/10 By Kt Evans and Annie Darling
After a blinding performance by Welsh rockers, The Automatic, it would be fair to say that we are now die-hard supporters of the rock group. Gracing the 02 Academy stage on 18th March, the four-piece performed a superb set of new and old material, which didn’t fail to hype up the eager crowd. The band captivated the youthful audience from the word ‘go’, opening with ‘Insides’; coincidently the first track off their exciting new third album ‘Tear the Signs Down’, which was released 8th March. Energetic and buzzing with electrifying enthusiasm, The Automatic performed tight, challenging pieces whilst displaying an effortless performance. After all, this is what breed’s success. Robin Hawkins and Paul Mullen, both lead vocals, showed off impressive lyrical ability in ‘Run and Hide’. The track is tipped as a potential future hit off the new album, which perfectly demonstrates the band’s awe-inspiring work from electric guitarist James Frost. Passionate drummer, Iwan Griffith, also supplied a head banging rhythmic section throughout the set; especially felt in ‘Cannot be Saved’ that confirmed the band’s unarguable talent for instrumental craftsmanship. Arguably one of the most catchiest songs of the 21st century, the band went on to perform ‘Monster’, which accompanied by impatient strobe lighting, instigated adrenaline rushes throughout the already lively audience. Pulling on a freakishly realistic alien mask and screeching into a stripy Dictaphone, Paul Mullen can take credit for the weirdest stage presence we’ve ever witnessed at a gig. All of this, however, works in favour for the uniqueness of The Automatic. The band has it all; a scorchinghot new album with catchy tunes you can’t help but sing along to and a surreal stage performance. But not only this - they are masters of working a crowd and are clearly enthused about music, all of which equates to a cracking future ahead for The Automatic.
LINING!
A Silver Mt. Zion is a Canadian post-rock band formed in 1999 by Godspeed You! Black Emperor musicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. According to an interview with VPRO Radio in the Netherlands, originally the project was for Efrim to learn how to score music, but the idea was soon abandoned as Efrim decided that he preferred music not to be defined by rules, preferring simply what sounds best. Despite this, he continued the project out of a desire to experiment with ideas that would not work within the context of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The decision to record an album was partly inspired by the death of his dog Wanda, who had died while Godspeed You! Black Emperor was on tour. He wanted to record an album in her memory, but did not feel that he

could effectively do this through Godspeed’s collective, consensus format. Unlike Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Silver Mt. Zion’s music often features vocals. The last album they released contained no purely instrumental tracks. Efrim confessed that he was uncomfortable with this at first, feeling “foolish” and uncomfortable with the role of the singer in music generally. That is, he did not want to be the focus of the band’s music but rather wished to use vocals as a stylistic tool. Some fans were initially ambivalent about the use of vocals, but Efrim’s poetic lyrical style is now well respected among fans. Furthermore, A Silver Mt. Zion’s fan base has expanded, and they are no longer seen merely as an offshoot of Godspeed You! Black Emperor but as a unique and separate entity. There are strong political motifs in the band’s music. The instrumental “13 Angels Standing Guard ‘round the Side of Your Bed” is apparently directed toward black bloc anarchists, according to liner notes. The song
“Triumph of Our Tired Eyes” could be interpreted as lamenting the present state of the world while espousing strong hope for the future. (Good luck with that lads) It also references the old anarchist song, “To the Barricades,” sung by anarchists during the Spanish Revolution. The band’s most recent album, Horses in the Sky, contains ostensibly political tracks, including “God Bless Our Dead Marines” and “Ring dom Has Come and Gone).” However, it is worth noting that when asked about the political elements of A Silver Mt. Zion’s songs after a concert in Nottingham, Efrim Menuck said that the band are not trying to be ‘political’ per se with their songs, but write songs about the sorts of things they talk about with their friends. Whew! If that sounds like your thing check them out live at the Corp on the 25th.

in London and Berlin. Dee Plume and Sue Denim are the only two members, apart from a drummer named Ann Droid. Sue and Dee met whilst students in Liverpool, and have taken their stage names from the word for a writer’s pen name: “nom de plume” (Dee Plume) and the word for an assumed name “pseudonym” (Sue Denim). They have a show at the O2 Academy on the 27th. They
have played Sheffield before and I met one of the girls after the show and she was quite rude to me and I really didn’t do anything to deserve it Honest! But I thought they were brilliant I really enjoyed them, so girls please be nice to me this time around.... I do like you.

reviews by presley artist: Mariah Carey single: Angels Cry release date: March 29th
On the back of a huge stripped down raw performance in the hugely successful movie ‘Precious’. A huge tour and album, we see Mariah teaming up with Ne-Yo on vocal duties. What we get here is exactly what you’d expect from Mariah, it’s a ballad that is full of depth, she thankfully doesn’t go too overboard with her vocal, and Ne-Yo does a good job in his solo section in the middle of the song. The only problem I have with these kind of ballads are that they leave me a bit cold. They are well done, beautifully produced but they lack something that I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe it’s just the lack of a really good tune, I can never ever see another artist covering this song for example. The melody is quite standard too, it feels like you’ve heard this song (or something very similar) a million times times before. It, for me, feels pretty soulless and that’s the main problem here I think.
artist: Duran Duran single: Duran Duran release date: March 29th A special edition re-release of the brummie boys debut album. Its not far away from being their classic album, but maybe the follow up ‘Rio’ just pips it to the post. This is probably the perfect New Romantic album. Filled with classics such as ‘Planet Earth’ ‘Girls On Film’ and ‘Careless Memories’ there isn’t anything out there to match it. The first Spandau album is possibly the closest but nowhere near as cool. What you get with this special edition is a huge 27 song double disc packed with b-sides, demos, radio sessions and the very cool night versions. The ‘Girls On Film’ one being the standout of these, mainly because it was this version that they did the explicit video to that got banned in so many places and broke them on MTV and then obviously in America. Worth getting if you like a bit of synth-camp.
artist: Plan B single: She Said release date: March 29th
Mr B popped up on the Jonathan Ross show a week or two ago. One thing was instantly apparent, this artist is gonna be sold to us in a quite aggressive way. Not aggressive in its marketing, oh no, aggressive in Mr B’s persona. Very much sold as a white street smart gangster type, the guy you’d see down the dog track wheeling and dealing and with a very much “don’t f**k with me” attitude. For me, I find stuff like that quite gross, I don’t find it appealing, funny or impressive and I also think it’s not a very good role model for kids to be seeing. That’s not what we want to our kids to aspire to, is it? I digress, on to the music. The odd thing is, this aggressive looking guy takes to the stage and then sings in a high pitched voice. It’s quite funny at first. The music is very ‘60’s soul and really good for that kind of style. The song itself is great, really catchy. Two problems though, you realise that his high pitched vocal is infectious but very limited in its range. And then!! Yep he goes and ruins it all by going into white boy rap, imagine a harder Madness with some hard nose cockney banter in the middle. It’s a real shame because the music is really good. This will appeal to blokes more than girls without a doubt and the type who wanna get tanked up and barge about at gigs.

12 point action plan will transform the UK pubs market’ CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has warmly welcomed the action plan announced today by Pubs Minister John Healey to save Britain’s struggling community pubs. Mike Benner, Chief Executive, said, “This is a great day for people who care about the future of our community pubs. This inspired action plan could offer a lifeline to thousands of pubs and help communities stave off pub closures which threaten their quality of life and community well-being.” “I am delighted that John Healey has listened to CAMRA’s calls to help stop pubs being demolished unnecessarily, to ban the anti-competitive practice of placing restrictive covenants on pubs to stop their future use as pubs, and for the industry to self-reform the beer tie to allow pub tenants a free of tie option and to take a guest ale.” CAMRA has also welcomed steps to provide Government funding to Pub is the Hub, to ease planning restrictions on diversification and run
THE YES! PROJECT - A £300 MILLION ENTERTAINMENT RESORT IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE Details of exciting proposals for Rother Valley are given in the following press release from Oak Holdings AIM-listed development company and property consultancy Oak Holdings plc, in association with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, submitted its outline planning application for its £300-million YES ! Project, a major entertainment resort. Hailed as the largest indoor leisure and tourism development in Europe, YES! will regenerate 320 acres (130 hectares) of brownfield land adjoining the Rother Valley Country Park , Rotherham, close to J31 of the M1. Previously the site was the Pithouse West coal mine and coking plant which has been disused for many years. The project will not only bring tourists from all over the country to the area, but will create 2,700 new jobs in South Yorkshire across a broad spectrum of skills, addressing two of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Northern Way targets, promoting tourism and leisure and tackling unemployment, particularly worklessness.
YES! will feature over one million sq ft of entertainment facilities with supporting infrastructure that includes a unique combination of a major theatre complex, extreme sports centre, major indoor entertainment facilities, four star resort spa and conference hotel, exhibition centre and golf range, along with restaurants, bars, cafes and festival retailing. The new theatre, set to be the largest outside the West End will help bolster the area’s growing reputation as a centre for the creative and cultural industries. By broadening the South Yorkshire leisure offer tourists from not only the UK, but also abroad, (using the new Robin Hood Airport) will be attracted to the area. The major indoor-themed leisure and world class extreme sports complex, which will be integrated into the Rother Valley Park’s existing excellent sports facilities, will create a destination unrivalled in the region. The four-star resort spa hotel, conference and exhibition centre will form a much needed boost to the hotel provision in the area, and will
attract visitors in its own right. Appointed Preferred Developers for the site in 2003 by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Yorkshire Forward, Oak has already signed Memoranda of Understanding with three major occupiers for YES! Clear Channel Entertainment, one of the world’s biggest promoters of live entertainment, is being lined up to operate the theatre complex. Venture Xtreme UK Ltd plans to create a world class indoor and outdoor extreme pursuits sports facility which will include an Olympic standard canoe slalom. The Baydrive Group, the Promoters of the innovative TopGolf Centres, will open one of their innovative golf driving range centres, currently being rolled out worldwide. This offers a golfing experience for novice and families alike whilst providing a challenge for serious golfers. There has also been strong interest from several major global hotel operators in locating at YES! and a further announcement will be made in due course. Oak Holdings chief
executive Steve Lewis says:’Undoubtedly, YES! will be a sensation, providing South Yorkshire and the UK with a tourism and leisure development to be proud of and encouraging people to travel into the area. It will certainly be the largest undercover tourism and leisure development in Europe.’ ‘Apart from creating up to 2,700 new jobs, YES! also has educational, environmental and cultural merits that will significantly benefit surrounding communities.’ The design has been prepared by world renowned architects CZWG and Holder Mathias who have formed a joint venture for this project known as CZWG Holder Mathias and between them they have produced a stunning scheme South Yorkshire can be proud of. Piers Gough of CZWG Architects was responsible for the acclaimed Regency Wing of the National Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London. He is also working on the Vaux Brewery development in Sunderland and the design of the buildings for what will be the largest solarpowered village in Kendal
Rise, West London. Peter Mathias of Holder Mathias Architects was responsible for the acclaimed Centre Parc’s Oasis centre in Cumbria Rotherham Economic & Development Services’ executive director, Adam Wilkinson, leading the project for the council, said: ‘There’s a rigorous planning process ahead, but we’re confident Oak can meet the criteria. Once that’s complete, we’ll be creating more than a development - it would be a vision of how future leisure attractions could take shape. There are over 20 million people within easy travelling distance, but the scheme would bring in visitors from all over the country, even internationally, so the scope for extra tourism is huge. Add YES! to other facilities in South Yorkshire and the area would become a leading centre for leisure and tourism. Regeneration benefits would be massive – YES! would bring in extra spending and create jobs for people right across South Yorkshire.’
a three year trial to provide much-needed support for communities who wish to buy their local pub. Mike Benner added, “These plans have the potential to totally transform the UK pubs market leading to a freer, more competitive market where consumers will benefit from greater choice, improved amenity and lower prices. It is essential that the industry responds swiftly to reform the beer tie through a free of tie option for tenants and a guest beer. The rewards will be a much more vibrant and sustainable pub market.” “I hope pub-goers throughout the land will be raising a toast to these plans in their local tonight”.
HORSE AND JOCKEY TRIES SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT The Horse and Jockey at Wadsley was the place to be last Saturday night. As the photo clearly shows, revellers enjoyed the ‘Vicars and Tarts’ night to the max. It’s a great example of going out there to win customers and give people a good reason to go out and enjoy themselves. Jean Stratford commented: A fab night was had by all. As with every theme night there is always a great party atmosphere with games and prizes and free shots..... The Bishop( or The Dean of Wadsley as he called himself... his name is Dean tho ;-) headed a conga line around the pub to the music of’ jump in the line’ by Harry Belafonte followed by a selection of Tarts and a Pimp which was a sight to behold!!!! Disco / Karaoke was provided as usual by the wonderful Daz!!! who always joins in with the fancy dress theme is always open to suggestions for a theme, Customers old and new are always made to feel very welcome. Congratulations to everyone involved for a making a good night into A GREAT ONE

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS DURING THE WEDDING REHEARSAL
During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the vicar with an unusual offer. “Look, I’ll give you £100 if you’ll change the wedding vows. When you get to me and the part where I’m to promise to ‘love, honor and obey’ and ‘forsaking all others, be faithful to her forever,’ I’d appreciate it if you’d just leave that part out.” He passed the clergyman the cash and walked away satisfied. It is now the day of the wedding, and the bride and groom have moved to that part of the ceremony where the vows are exchanged. When it comes time for the groom’s vows, the vicar looks the young man in the eye and says: “Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?” The groom gulped and looked around, and said in a tiny voice, “Yes.” The groom leaned toward the vicar and hissed, “I thought we had a deal.”
My attention was drawn to a headline in the Sun newspaper which in large bold print stated ‘Boycott the troop hater’. As that did not appear to be a true reflection of ‘Sir’ Geoffrey, the country’s finest batsman for many a year, I felt compelled to read what it was all about. The article was about some nutter by the name of Karl Winn, who has publicly stated that he would prefer to employ a drug dealer or a paedophile than an ex-serviceman is quite frankly appalling. If ever a statement was entitled to public revulsion, this was it. This shows total disrespect for the families of our brave troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, and I sincerely hope that all right-minded people will not trade with this vile man and his business goes to the wall. Certainly, if the readers letters are anything to go by, Mr. Karl (I am always suspicious of people who spell that Christian name with a kicking k) Winn has most certainly committed financial suicide. There has been much evidence, this week, of people rallying round to ease the pressure, particularly the supermarkets, whilst this country is in economic turmoil. However, an advertisement on television from a finance company, Quick Quid, rather put the damper on proceedings. This company specialises in short term loans at an annual percentage rate of 2356 %, and has the gall to state that it is not recommended as a long term financial solution. I was always under the impression that in order to control usurers, the maximum percentage al-
lowed was 48% (This actually only applies to Pawn Brokers). The new government must take urgent steps to halt this business before we read of suicides, marital break up and all the other casualties of poverty. I spent the whole evening watching Sport Relief, and was extremely moved by the plight of the poor children in Uganda dying with malaria. as was presenter Chris Moyles, and the high percentage of people with aids in Kenya. If ever anything ever showed the wisdom of putting something on the end of it (a condom) this was surely the strongest message. However, this did not minimise the sorrow I felt for the poor grieving parents and loved ones. I recently was brought a commemorative edition of Britain’s oldest newspaper, and guess what? It was called the Mercury. Originating from 1695, the Rutland and Stamford Mercury is still going strong after all these years, although not with the original journalists and editor. St. George’s day presented me with a bit of a dilemma this year as I was torn between supporting Craig Daniels who has his annual celebration at Firth Park Club or another close pal, Gary Phillips who has a Help the Heroes night at the Forest Showbar, starring the wonderful Jimmy Carol on the same night. I was going to attend both, as they are not too far apart, but a wedding invitation dropped through my letter box to a wedding on the same night. I am delighted to accept this kind invitation from Miss Hollie Stevenson, daughter of my dear
friend Alma, and Peter Stevenson, a brave serving soldier, shortly off to Afghanistan. My neighbour, and gardening expert Pat Alderson has been mentioned in this column before and she is a little reluctant where publicity is concerned. However, I feel duty bound to write that this remarkable lady, who does not enjoy the best of health, has again been raising money for Ashgate Hospice, by making decorative Christmas trees since midsummer and has raised a grand total of £633. Well done Pat, you surely do not get the recognition you deserve, and accordingly, I am more than happy to give you a mention in this column. I had the great pleasure, this week, of spending some time with Bernie Clifton, the ostrich riding, trombone playing comedian, who is a delightful man as well as being very funny. What about poor old Jackie Toaduff.? Not only has his life story been told before, with the parallel story of Billy Elliott, he now has to contend with the fact that close friend of Katie Price is releasing an autobiography entitled Coaldust to Stardust, which of course is the title of his bestselling book. Well, Jackie boy, I have to tell you that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.Your fascinating journey through life, is the most interesting and enjoyable read ever, and may now be bought on line at Tesco,Waterstones and Amazon books where you are currently sitting at number one in your category.
The vicar put the £100 into his hand and whispered back, “She made me a much better offer.” A CONFESSION FROM THE DEATHBED A women on her deathbed called her husband and instructed him to look under their bed and open the wooden box he found. He was puzzled by the 3 eggs and £7,000 in cash he found in the box, so he asked his wife what the eggs were for. “Oh those”, she replied, “every time we had bad sex, I put an egg in the box”. Not bad, the husband thought to himself, after 35 years of marriage, then he asked, “But what about the £7,000?” “Oh that”, she replied, “every time I got a dozen I sold them.”

NEWS
PAUL WELLER After instantly selling out 5 nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall in May, Paul Weller – surely one of the hardest working men in rock - announces a UK arena tour throughout November and December 2010, including a night at Sheffield Arena on Tuesday 30th November. Tickets priced £35 (booking fee may apply) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 26th March. Anyone going to see Paul’s shows should expect to hear highlights from the new album plus a good smattering of old-
ies and goldies and perhaps a few surprises… Paul has also been confirmed to appear at this year’s V Festival in August. TV personality and one time ‘King of the Jungle,’ Christopher Biggins is to join the Dancing on Ice Tour judging panel. He will be joined by another new addition, Kyran Bracken, who was crowned ice dancing champion in the 2007 ITV1 series. Both will assume their seats behind the desk alongside judges from the hit ITV1 show, Karen Barber and Nicky Slater. The 25 date Tour kicks off with 6 performances at Sheffield Arena from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th April. Tickets are priced £65, £55, £40 & £32.50 (booking fee may apply). Biggins, who has no ice skating experience but who is an avid fan of the show will be judging performances by Inbetweeners star Emily Atack, 2Point4 Children actress Clare Buckfield. Coronation Street’s Gaynor Faye, ex-Hollyoaks actor Chris Fountain, Boyzone’s Mikey Graham who exited the ITV1 show last night, ex-Footballers’ Wives actor Gary Lucy, former Emmerdale star and still the bookies favourite to win the show after full marks last night Hayley Tamaddon and former X factor champ Ray Quinn. Speaking about joining the Dancing On Ice Tour, Biggins said, “I am thrilled to be on the judging panel of Dancing On Ice Tour this year. I’m very much looking forward to joining the celebrity skaters and their partners in all their sparkling refinery, as we take this favourite show of mine on the road to arena audiences all over the UK.” The format of the tour is the same as previous years and as in the hit ITV1 show, the audience will be able to use their mobile phone to text vote for their favourite dancing couple. The votes will then be added to the scores from the Judges to decide the winner. Once the votes have been counted, the winning celebrity will join their skating partner to perform a magical finale. As with the previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity; more than £80,000 has been raised to date. The professional skaters on the Dancing on Ice Tour this year are Fred Palascak dancing with Emily Atack; Lukasz Rozycki dancing with Clare Buckfield; Matt Evers dancing with Gaynor Faye; Brianne Delacourt dancing with Chris Fountain;
Melanie Lambert dancing with Mikey Graham; Maria Filipov dancing with Gary Lucy; Dan Whiston dancing with Hayley Tamaddon and Alexandra Schauman dancing with Ray Quinn.

WORLDʼS BEST DIVERS RETURN TO SHEFFIELD FOR WORLD SERIES As Sheffield prepares to host the world’s leading international divers for the final leg of the prestigious FINA/Li Ning Diving World Series powered by British Gas on 23rd – 24th April, tickets for the event have now been made available with prices starting at just £10 for adults and £5 for children. Ponds Forge International Sports Centre will once again host the world’s leading divers from the best international diving teams including the likes of Great Britain, USA and China, Current World Champion and Team GB star Tom Daley will lead the British challenge with the likes of Peter Waterfield, Rebecca Gallantree and Nick Robinson-Baker also competing for honours. Daley, who secured silver in the 10m Platform at the 2009 FINA Diving World Series before becoming the country’s youngest World Champion when he won gold in Rome later that summer, commented: “It’s an exciting and daring sport to watch and Great Britain have a strong team so with the fans cheering us on there are definitely some good medal opportunities.” With £15 adult and £7.50 child weekend tickets, demand is expected to be high. Family deals are also available, starting at £25 per day or £50 for the whole weekend. British Swimming, who are organising the event, have also included special group offers designed to make the event even more accessible to Diving Clubs from around the UK. The British team enjoyed further success at the Sheffield leg in 2009 with Ben Swain and Nick Robinson-Baker winning bronze on their way to claiming the overall Series title in the 3m Synchro. Sister duo, Helen and Carol Galashan also finished a credible fourth place in the women’s 10m Platform. British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes said: “The FINA Diving World Series is, for British Swimming, a major event when our elite divers place themselves head-to-head against the very best in the world and this event is critical in our preparation for the all important Olympics in 2012.” “I hope that having the opportunity to see such amazing athletes competing on their doorstep, will inspire young people in Sheffield to have a go and take up diving themselves.” Lucy Crickmore, UK Sport’s Events Consultant, said: “The FINA Diving World Series is a great opportunity for the fans to come out and watch some of the best divers in the world compete in this country, and it’s great preparation for the Brits to dive in front of a home crowd leading up to 2012.” Cllr Sylvia Dunkley, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism from Sheffield City Council said “Sheffield is proud to host the prestigious FINA Diving World series for the fourth year running. Previous events have given a serious boost to the local economy by attracting significant numbers of visitors to the city during the competition weekend.” For ticketing details and to book online please visit: http://www.swimming.org/events/event/finadiving-world-series
GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st A creative project has come to fruition. Get ready to take a bow. The success of this endeavour will result in a teaching or writing opportunity. At first, you won’t be sure if you’re up to the job, but after the first few tries you’ll develop a taste for this work. Be patient. An artistic, creative friend has some wonderful advice regarding your new job. If they recommend a book, movie, or piece of music, you can be sure it’s wonderful. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Your family has reached an exciting turning point. A youngster is old enough to assume some big responsibilities, enabling you to turn your attention to work you abandoned years ago. It makes you so proud to see everybody developing so nicely. Most of the credit is due to you. You’ve put a lot of time and attention into creating a happy household. Now you have more time to rest and relax with your nearest and dearest. Fairy tales can come true! LEO July 24th - August 23rd The time has come to sign a legal paper or make an agreement. Fortunately, the stars look favourably on this alliance. It looks as if you’ll acquire a creative partner in the mix. Together, the two of you can make a very profitable partnership. If you have no intention of launching a business, you may decide to write reviews or product descriptions for a manufacturer of quality goods. Set time aside in your schedule for a youngster’s performance or recital. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd You’ll finally receive payment for a job you performed some time ago. Take this opportunity to treat yourself to a luxurious item that has been tempting for months. As a general rule, you’re not very materialistic. You do have a weakness for natural materials and master craftsmanship. Go ahead and splurge. You’ve earned it. A dream job will fall into your lap. This assignment will feel more like work than play. If you’re suffering from an ache or pain, get a massage. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd You’re tired of smiling politely while a romantic or business partner steals your thunder. Over the past two weeks, you’ve had several impressive successes. Now it’s time to make sure everyone knows about them. Fortunately, an appreciative agent or manager will catch sight of your work and reward you accordingly. Nothing opens doors like professional representation. Good news regarding an investment, divorce settlement, or inheritance will soon reach your ears. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd A deep, dark secret comes to light, enabling you to see a relative’s true motives. It turns out your family member had your best interests at heart, after all. Embarking on a romance could be in the cards. It looks as if a talented artist has taken a shine to you. Together, you make an attractive couple. If you’re already in a relationship, take this opportunity to do something special for your amour. A glittering token of your affection will go over well. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st A group effort finally comes to a successful conclusion, much to your relief. For a while there, you wondered if any of you were going to survive! Now the champagne has been opened and the awards have been presented, you can rest and relax. Good news from a counsellor or spiritual advisor is music to your ears. Now you’re able to put plans for a child into motion. Getting special instruction will help them develop their natural talent. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th At long last, you’re getting the attention and acclaim you desire. A job you’ve been craving will suddenly become available. This time around, you’ll be given the top spot. Getting paid to exercise your creative vision will feel like heaven on earth. Alternatively, you may be thinking of quitting your job to raise a youngster. People will think you’re crazy, but deep down inside, you know it’s the right thing to do for you and your family. Follow your heart. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th It’s time to take a leap of faith. Even an ultra logical person like you needs to follow their heart from time to time. If you’ve wanted to change your look, now is the time to do so. Go ahead and spend a little extra money on new clothes, a different hairstyle, or a personal trainer. Signing a contract or making a business deal will give you more time for the leisure activities you love. You have to admit, tackling all the work by yourself has been exhausting. PISCES February 20th - March 20th It’s time to settle an obligation, whether it’s repaying a loan or keeping an old promise. Do a kind deed anonymously. Serving as someone’s secret benefactor puts a spring in your step. This would be a good time to make a donation to charity, too. The more generous you are, the easier it will be to attract good fortune. Don’t be surprised when a lucrative job falls in your lap. This position will enable you to mix with highly creative clients who uplift and inspire you

CHELTENHAM REVIEW 2010
too much hype, rumour and speculation. When it comes right down to it the reputed pigeon catchers at home have to do it on the track in public and Well, firstly it’s about 360 too many of them are found days until the next Cheltenham Festival (or should it be wanting. The next major National Bookies’ benefit?). Hunt meeting is the Aintree Secondly if ever there was Grand National meeting an advert for not blindly that starts on 8th April. The backing favourites this was National itself is on Saturday it. Only one favourite won each 10th April when last year’s hero, Mon Mome, is set to day. The starting price odds were (respectively): 6/4; 4/1; defend his crown. 5/6; and 9/2 (joint favourite). After the way he finished up the hill in the Gold Cup Out of 26 races a £1 level at Cheltenham who is to stake on the favourites returned a loss of £11.20 (and say that he won’t succeed? that is not counting the extra I will be previewing this stakes needed to cover joint meeting in the next but one edition of the Mercury - so favourites!). Finally, for this week’s bet of the week I am going to the EBF Mares “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle Final at Newbury. This race often throws up good horses and is usually run in a fast time. My selection is Queen Poline who I think will relish the distance and forecast ground. In the meantime I suggest that you keep your powder dry for the better opportunities that are just around the corner at Aintree and Punchestown in April.

The A5 event which is race 4 sees a good chance given to trap 2 Kylegrove Bruno and if he keeps his mind on the job in hand should have a great chance. The A1 contest (Race 12) is a very tricky affair with the three strongest stayrs on the outside and if there is trouble on the rails should be between Trap 4 Rockmount Ace and Trap 6 Cryptospiridium

FOOTBALL - MILLERS NEWS
LOCAL SPORT NEWS
MILLERS BURY BURY Rotherham United got back to winning ways thanks to a stunning strike from Josh Walker. The game appeared to be heading towards a draw at Don Valley before Walker’s winner 10 minutes from time. Ronnie Moore made three changes to the side that was beaten at Accrington in midweek, with Dale Tonge and Gavin Gunning both being brought back into the side at full-back, as well as the fit again Nicky Law, replacing Kevin Ellison who missed out through illness. Law, beginning on the left, created the first chance of the game. He found his way into the box and squared for Adam Le Fondre, but his shot was comfortably held by Wayne Brown in the Bury goal. Marcus Marshall making his first start at Don Valley soon endeared himself to the home faithful with a marauding run which resulted in a blocked effort from the edge of the area. On seven minutes new Shakers signing Keigan Parker broke into the box, rounded Andy Warrington and put the ball into the back of the net, only to see his effort ruled out for offside. Ian Sharps almost put the Millers in front soon after. Law’s corner bounced around in the area, and when it eventually fell to the Millers skipper five yards out, his volley was put over the bar. Walker had a shot from distance saved before a goalmouth scramble ended with Le Fondre’s mis-hit eventually being blocked; and Bury were able to clear. The Millers lost Nick Fenton midway through the first half, and the Shakers soon had their best chance of the half. A corner from the left was glanced wide by Efe Sodje. Then just before the half-hour, Tom Newey’s deep LOCAL SPORT NEWS

cross was met by the head of Tom Elliott, but it sailed over Warrington’s crossbar. Parker pulled back a cross at the far post ten minutes before half-time, and as Elliott appeared poised to put the visitors ahead, Sharps dived in to divert the ball away from danger. It was the home side who started the second half brighter, and spurned a wonderful chance early on. Le Fondre got the better of Sodje on the left, before sprinting into the box, but a lack of options meant Bury were able to clear. Marshall then tested the goalkeeper when he cut in and struck with his left foot, forcing Brown to tip the ball wide at full-stretch. Former Miller Ryan Cresswell was introduced for the visitors and as the Millers continued to pile on the pressure with a succession of corner kicks which culminated in Gunning volleying over from 20 yards. A clever move on the edge of the Bury box brought the Millers next chance on 71 minutes. McAllister, Law and Harrison all combined to find Marshall, and when he was eventually crowded out, Le Fondre’s reaction shot floated wide of Brown’s right-hand post. Substitute Abdulai Bell-Baggie on his home debut was looking to cause problems and his turn in midfield almost carved out a chance for Le Fondre. However it was the impressive Marshall who was really catching the eye. Some neat footwork on the left led to him crossing for Harrison, and when he laid off for Walker, the ‘Boro loanee turned onto his left foot and fired the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards, with just ten minutes remaining. Two minutes into the three added on, Andy Morrell joined the attack and saw his header clip the top of the crossbar, before referee Mr Dunn brought proceedings to a close, giving the Millers a vital three points in their quest for the top three.

Ronnie praise for victorious Millers Ronnie Moore lavished praise on to his Rotherham United troops after the Millers saw off promotion rivals Bury 1-0 at Don Valley Stadium. The Millers edged a tight affair with a Josh Walker strike 10 minutes from time to seal the points and move them into fourth position in the table. “At the end of the day it was about the result but to a man I thought that we played well today,” said a delighted Ronnie after the game. “We played some decent stuff at times, Marshall was outstanding for us and it was nice to see the goal go in. If it was a boxing match I think we just about shaded it on points but I was pleased with the performance today more than anything. “I have nothing but praise for them today, I thought we played with a good tempo from the start, we got stuck in, we closed them down and we had to because they are a decent side with good players. They have clever wingers who come off the flanks and cause you problems, we had to be at our best defensively and we were.” Ronnie was particularly pleased with the work rate involved in creating the opportunity for Walker which led to the goal, his second in as many games. “It was a tremendous goal but to be fair Danny Harrison deserves a lot of credit,” added Ronnie. “Marshall did well in the first place but then Danny got two block tackles in, then Josh showed great skill to come inside on his left foot and then finish well. “We know that Josh has a decent shot but he doesn’t use it as often as he should do. He is good form distance and I have seen him do it for Middlesbrough but he needs to shoot more. He has the ability to do that and it was nice to see him score.”

The Sheffield Arena was packed with an EIHL record-breaking crowd of 8634 people on Saturday night, all there to watch “Rocket” Ron Shudra’s shirt retired to the rafters. Fans young and old, many in jerseys from one of the 12 seasons Shudra graced the ice in a Steelers kit, stood to watch the ceremony as current Steelers’ players made a guard of honour and the number 26 shirt was raised. Of course they were there to see a game as well, and finally Steelers fans got to see the home game they had been waiting for literally all season – the Steelers thrashing the Panthers 6-2. With back-up Geoff Woolhouse in net for the Panthers (starting netminder Kevin St. Pierre still out with a groin injury), it was still no easy task in the first period, as the visitors out-shot the Steelers 12-6 but neither team made it onto the scoreboard. However just 1:40 into the second period Randy Dagenais fired home the Steelers’ first goal, followed at 24:29 by Joey Talbot who doubled the Steelers’ lead. At 32:55 the Panthers pulled a goal back, Jay Henderson the scorer, but another two goals for the Steelers, a second from Talbot and one from Doug Sheppard, put the Steelers 4-1 ahead going into the third period. From then they never looked back, despite Corey Neilson adding a second for the Panthers at 47:01. Sheppard’s second and a goal from Matt Hubbauer in the last two minutes sealed the deal for the Steelers. A less successful Sunday night, as the Steelers went down 7-4 in Hull. The Stingrays’ Curtis Huppe stole the limelight with four goals and an assist, however it was Matt Hubbauer who opened the night’s scoring, with a goal for the Steelers at 2:22. Stingrays fired home three unanswered goals in the first period, from Jason Silverthorn, Lee Esders, and Curtis Huppe, to take the first period 3-1. Jonathan
Zion added the Steelers’ second goal to start the second period, but once again the Stingrays had an answer and Jeff Glowa restored their three-goal lead. Shortly after his goal Joey Talbot was ejected from the game with a 10-plusgame penalty for abuse of an official, and at 38:00 Jeff Legue gave hope to the Steelers fans once again as he scored the Steelers’ third goal. The third period, however, was the Curtis Huppe show, and although Steelers’ captain Jonathan Phillips scored their fourth goal at 47:41, Huppe added his hat-trick and the Stingrays took their last league game of the season 7-4. The Steelers’ final home game of the 2009-10 season takes place this Sunday, as they take on the Cardiff Devils in the Play-Offs. Steelers will play the Devils in Cardiff on Saturday before the home leg on Sunday, the winning team securing a place at the Play-Off Finals weekend in Nottingham (April 3-4th). Tickets
for Sunday’s game are available from the Arena Box Office (0114 256 56 56). 2010-11 season ticket application forms are now available from the Steelers’ desk on Concourse on match nights, and from the Steelers’ office (0114 242 35 35).

what could prove a valuable point in their fight against the drop with a goalless draw against Derby on Saturday. In a game of few chances, the home side shaded possession but couldn’t find a way through the Rams defence. Tommy Miller had the best chance of the whole game inside the first minute but failed to take advantage and that pretty much summed up what was an overall tepid affair at Hillsborough. Alan Irvine resumed the Owls’ relegation battle with the same side that finished the game at Preston on Tuesday, when Wednesday recovered from a two-goal deficit to take a draw into the Rams contest. With Luke Varney ineligible to face his parent club, Leon Clarke returned to the starting line-up alongside Marcus Tudgay up front. And it was Tudgay that had a hand in the build-up as Wednesday almost burst into that early lead. The striker got a vital flick onto Clarke’s feed and the ball fell kindly to Miller, whose low drive was beaten away by Stephen Bywater. Derby responded immediately with Chris Porter forcing a reflex save from Lee Grant before a nervous ten minutes for both sides that spawned little of note. But on the 15-minute mark the Owls broke free - with Tom Soares at the hub - and again came close to taking the lead. The loanee midfielder snatched possession in the engine room and sprayed a delightful pass to Miller on the right flank. Miller sent over a teasing cross into the heart of the danger zone and Tudgay was inches away from a crucial connection. Soares was causing problems for Derby and brought another fine save out of Bywater on 28 minutes before the Rams had their best chance of the half five minutes before the break. James McEveley swung over a dipping free kick that found Rob Hulse and the big hitman got excellent purchase on a header that Grant athletically tipped over the bar. Wednesday needed to show more in the second half but the early exchanges saw a continuation of the first, with the Owls edging possession without piling significant pressure on the visitors’ defence. And with a scant amount

OʼCONNOR KEEN ON HORNETS CLASH James O’Connor is eagerly anticipating Wednesday night’s clash with Watford as the Owls go in search of a valuable three points in the Championship. Wednesday are precariously placed just one slot over the relegation zone but could leapfrog the Hornets in the event of a win tomorrow evening. And midfield man O’Connor is itching to get back on the park and help register what would be a vital S6 success. He told Wednesday Player: “It’s a good thing that people are looking forward to the games and we really need those points. But Watford are the same, they are fighting for their lives, as all the clubs

Written by Bunsen Bob
As the season shortens by another weekend, we’re really none the wiser as to whether we’ll be sneaking into the nightclub of the Championship with a fake ID or having to settle for a Panda Pop and packet of crinkle cut at the youth club that is League One. Although the patrons of the Kop still haven’t quite got the hang of which score to cheer or groan to, it really is a case of keeping one eye on us and the other on our fellow strugglers’ scores. As I have a lazy eye this comes quite naturally to me but it only serves to heighten my anxiety and, unfortunately, the rate of degrees that my pupils differ in direction. I often tell myself and other people within earshot that “it doesn’t matter what other teams are doing” or “it’s in our own hands” but, deep down, I know that I’m being as realistic as a Hollyoaks storyline. Unfortunately, this is a dogfight and what the other dogs do is very significant to our plight. SEE THE NEW BLACK KIT IN STYLE
Sheffield Wednesday will launch the club’s new PUMA away kit in style with a unique fashion show at Hillsborough Stadium. Staged in partnership with John Lewis, supporters who attend the fashion show on April 20 at 6.30pm, will have the chance to be amongst the first to purchase the new kit, which goes on general sale on April 24. Sheffield Wednesday players will be modelling the new kit and other items from the John Lewis menswear range on the catwalk on the night, including new brands Ted Baker and Barbour. Lorraine Shepherd, Men’s fashion adviser at John Lewis,
said: “I can’t wait for people to see the exciting new collections we’re featuring, and also demonstrate how simple, quality tailoring can improve any shape.” SWFC’s Corporate Partnerships Manager, Martin Bouchier, said: “This fashion show at Hillsborough will be a great way for supporters to get their hands on the Owls new away kit before anyone else and see some of their heroes in a rare outing on the catwalk. It should be a really fun night so we look forward to hosting John Lewis and our supporters for this unique event.” There will also be a buffet and the opportunity to win a new black shirt signed by the SWFC first team squad. Tickets are priced £10 for adults and £2 for children to book your place call 0871 995 1867.

OWLS STARS RAISE MONEY FOR SPORT RELIEF
Sheffield Wednesday first team stars took a moment from training on Thursday to raise money for Sport Relief by playing ‘Donations for a dunk.’ The Owls were joined at Middlewood Road by players from the Sheffield Sharks and went head to head in competition with the basketball pros. Darren Purse certainly rose to the challenge and finished the overall winner but there were also some notable performances from Frank Simek and Tom Soares. Club Chaplain, Rev Peter Allen explained more about the idea behind the event and who will benefit from the money raised on the day.

LATE HARPER STRIKE GAINS DERBY GAME POINT James Harper’s late strike arrested United’s losing streak and enabled the Blades to put further pressure on the Championship’s top six. In a repeat of the score between the two teams at Bramall Lane in October, United’s second half display was worthy of at least a point. James Hayter gave Doncaster an early lead and the home side were arguably the better team in the first half but the Blades dominated after the break. New Loanee Simonsen was named in goal and Harper recalled to a central midfield berth as Blackwell was forced into two changes with Bunn back at Blackburn and Henderson struggling with a hamstring complaint. The United boss again named just six substitutes, whilst Sharp was omitted from the Doncaster squad. In similar fashion to the early goal against Blackpool in midweek, United won a corner in the opening minute but this time Quinn could not find the target with his shot. There was worse to follow for the visitors as Rovers opened the scoring with their first significant move. Nosworthy conceded an unnecessary corner, from which United were caught napping and although Coppinger’s shot was blocked, the ball dropped kindly for HAYTER to beat a stranded Simonsen, who was off his line soon after to punch away a Woods free-kick with the goalscorer again looking dangerous. A marauding Montgomery run won a corner, from which Cresswell headed over a Yeates delivery and then Camara’s cross just evaded both Quinn and Cresswell as the visitors showed signs of an immediate recovery. However, the home side hit back with three opportunities in the space of five minutes, all of which were close to doubling the
Page 35
advantage. Another quick setpiece resulted in an Oster cross slightly too heavy for O’Connor and Emmanuel-Thomas and then Simonsen was called upon to make a sharp save at his near post from Hayter. On 21 minutes a cross from Chambers picked out Hayter at the back post and his header, with the goal at his mercy, was wide of the target. The Blades survived the onslaught, and created a good chance when Connolly’s tackle on Hayter set Camara free, but he was unable to find the target, whilst the goalmouth action - at both ends - unsurprisingly slowed as half-time approached. United were seeing a lot of the ball but the well-drilled defence and midfield of the home side held firm in keeping Sullivan protected. Blackwell threw on Little for Yeates at the start of the second half and an increase in the tempo gave the Unitedites behind Sullivan’s goal encouragement. The substitute’s first contribution was getting the better of two Rovers defenders on the right flank but his cross was claimed by the home goalkeeper. Oster’s pass released Coppinger, who cut inside but saw his shot hit the back of Connolly but United, who also introduced Bartley, were asking more questions of the home resolve and forcing the play. A good passing move saw Camara’s cross headed over by Cresswell, and the Blades had strong claims a penalty with a push by Martis on Cresswell but the referee said no. Camara was the first to be booked, for a foul on Woods, who recovered to fire in a shot which Simonsen pushed around the post, despite the ball bouncing just in front of the goalkeeper. Soon after Camara limped off and with no other fit strikers, Blackwell was forced into a
reshuffle. Taylor was introduced at left-back, Stewart moved forward and Quinn joined Cresswell in attack. Despite the upheaval, United were by far the better outfit in the second half and were dominating as the last 15 minutes approached. From a Little cross, Bartley headed over and Cresswell again looked to be impeded as he tried to get a touch on Quinn’s cross. Harper fired over after a Connolly throw was half-cleared and Blackwell instructed the powerful Bartley to finish the game as a makeshift striker, joining Cresswell and Quinn but leaving just three at the back. The pressure finally paid off on 88 minutes. Taylor’s deep freekick beat Bartley and Cresswell was again pushed as he chested down, it looked like referee Moss was about to award a penalty when HARPER drilled home in front of the Blades fans. It was the least United deserved for the second half display. Bartley returned to his central defensive position and Rovers introduced their last change, Mutch, who was immediately booked for a foul on Montgomery. Five additional minutes at the end of the 90 was music to the ears of the attacking Blades but a counter-attack almost won it for the home side when a neat Shiels flick put Hayter in the clear but he lacked poise in the box. Rovers also won two late corners but United held on to secure a deserved points. Rovers: Sullivan, O’Connor, Roberts, Chambers, Hayter, Wilson, Oster, Woods (Hird 85), Coppinger (Mutch 89), Martis, Emmanuel-Thomas (Shiels 78) Unused: McDaid, Smith, Spicer, Lockwood. Blades: Simonsen, Montgomery, Nosworthy, Yeates (Little 45), Harper, Cresswell, Stewart, Seip (Bartley 59), Quinn, Connolly, Camara (Taylor 72). Unused: Bennett, Fortune, Lowton.

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton
If the devastating bombshell I dropped last week is to be believed, then the only thing we have to look forward to between now and the end of the season is a trip to Hillsborough. And as it stands, precisely 2,800 hardy Blades will be in attendance for a game that dependent on results, could condemn Sheffield Wednesday to League One football next season. The allocation we have received has been a topic of some debate since the corresponding fixture back at Bramall Lane earlier in the season, for which our city rivals were only afforded approximately 2,200 tickets.
I can without doubt understand the frustration felt by Wednesday fans who were excluded, but the fact of the matter was that while ever there is a realistic chance the home fans will sell their allocation, they should be given priority. The frustration felt by our blue and White rivals led to many calls from their disgruntled followers for Lee Strafford to follow suit and give us a similar number, and he has of course adhered to their wishes, allocating us 4,000 tickets less than previous years. Now he is quite within his rights to have done this and it looks good to Hillsborough’s baying mob, but the decision is in all honesty a pretty ridiculous one, both practically and financially. For April’s Sheffield derby to be a sell out, the Wednesday masses would have to sell 35,000 tickets, a full 15,000 extra than turned out for their last home fixture. If this was to happen, which it won’t, Lee Strafford would be more than justified in his decision. One imagines that common sense will rule, and further tickets will be made available on the grounds that Wednesday can not afford to turn down an extra potential £100,000 they would get for United fans occupying otherwise empty seats. All that being said, one must give credit to the prices, with £21 compared to our charge of £30 earlier in the season putting us to shame.
