LOCAHOMES Local Liberal Democrat leader backs new style estate agency located in Post Offices

Locahomes is a new style estate agency that was launched by Sheffield’s Liberal Democrate leader, Paul Scriven, on Saturday. Fronted by entrpreneur Russell Paul, Locahomes is a new style estate agency that is located within local Post Offices. “I was looking for a different angle to estate agency, and a way to lower the fees for sellers and buyers, and came up with the idea of using Post Office windows,” says Locahomes owner, Russell Paul. “I have seen the effect of Post Offices closing around the region, and thought this would be a mutually beneficial way of using a local resource as well as keeping overheads down. This means that we can offer a commission free service.” Saturday saw the launch of Locahomes by Paul Scriven. Paul started a campaign to save Sheffield’s threatened Post Offices in August 2008, and saw Russell’s idea of utilising the Post Offices as a great way to help save the local businesses. “As a passionate believer in enterprise and the Post Office in the heart of the community, this is a great way to link the two together,” says Paul Scriven. “Russell Paul’s idea of Locahomes and the community, and using Post Offices so they stay the vibrant hub of the community, is a bright and innovative idea.” Russell has also secured an exclusive agreement with the National federation of Subpostmasters to offer estate agency services through their members’ post offices. For further information, please visit www. locahomes.co.uk or call 0114 360 0095. Locahomes offers the same full service that a traditional estate agency does, as well as lettings. Locahomes is commission free and does not charge tenants administration fees. The average cost saving from using Locahomes as opposed to a traditional estate agency is over £2,125.

Have a Cracking Easter at Crystal Peaks! The much awaited Easter weekend is almost upon us, so it’s time to start planning how to best spend your time off. Whether you’re after Easter gift inspiration or are struggling for ideas on what to do over the Bank Holiday, Crystal Peaks will offer you help and guidance to ensure you enjoy every moment. For lots of people Easter means one thing – Chocolate - so why not indulge in some of Thorntons most fabulous selections of eggs and Easter chocolate gifts, perfect presents for all the family and your friends, plus it’s something you can enjoy too! However, Easter treats for your friends and family do not always have to be chocolaty. Perhaps you know someone who has vowed to keep away from the sugary treats, so instead of naughtily tempting them, spoil them with a special present from Superdrug, such as a pampering bath set or other smellies. Try to set aside some quality time for those people who

are important to you this Bank Holiday. Perhaps a long walk with your parents or children would be the perfect welcome to spring. We may wish it was warmer, but the winter coolness can still catch us out around this time of year. So, wrap up warm with a bit of help from Next to guarantee the whole family is suitably warm but looking stylish in their outfits. Eggs are a big part of Easter. Why not encourage the kids to paint and use them as special Easter decorations? They can range from simple to more elaborate multi-coloured designs. Use paint, pens, glitter and stickers from WH Smith to decorate them. Before starting to decorate the eggs, make certain that you either hard boil or blow them first to avoid egg explosions! They also make the perfect Easter gift. For more fun and games, Egg Hunts put the fun into Easter- and it’s great for all the family to get involved. Pop into Poundland for a bucket of mini eggs then

hide them around the house and garden, be creative with hiding places to make it more of a challenge and good fun! Easter Sunday would not be complete without a delicious Roast Dinner. Why not invite the whole family around for some food fun. Pop into Sainsbury’s to get all your favourite ingredients and cook up a real treat for everyone to make it an Easter Sunday to remember. After the Easter eggs have been consumed and the roast dinner has been finished, it could be time to get out and about. A well-balanced life style is easy to achieve and it’s important to make it fun! Pop into JJB Sports and treat yourself to some new kit for the gym. Or make the most of the weather warming up and hop on your bike and get active! Perhaps you could pick up a few items to help you work out at home, for example, a fit ball used in Pilates. Come and discover your perfect Easter at Crystal Peaks.

Get Spotted; let the votes commence! Shoppers have been entering in their hundreds for the chance to be crowned Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre’s Ultimate Shopaholic as part of the Get Spotted campaign. The Get Spotted competition was open to all those shoppers who believe they have a flair for fashion, enthusiasm for home styling and an eye for a bargain. To vote for the person you believe should be Crystal Peaks’ Ultimate Shopaholic 2010 visit www. crystalpeakscentre.com <http://www.crystalpeakscentre.com/> and have your say! Online voting

will be open from 29th March until 9th April. When the ballots close the four entrants with the highest scores will be selected to take part in the live final on Saturday 24th April. As part of the Get Spotted live final show the contestants will have to prove their passion for shopping in a number of style and shopping based challenges. As well as the prestigious title, the winner will also receive a £1,000 shopping spree at Crystal Peaks and will become the shopping centre’s fashion and home styling blogger with a dedicated page on the centre’s website. Lee Greenwood, Centre Manager at Crystal Peaks comments, “The competi-

tion has been really popular and we have been inundated with entries. We’re really excited about the live final which promises to be a great day out for both the finalists and shoppers; with the Crystal Peaks style experts on hand to give fashion and styling advice as well as the finalists getting involved in various challenges - it’s an event not be missed. Plus, at the end of the day, one lucky contestant will go home as the centre’s Ultimate Shopaholic and a £1000 to spend at Crystal Peaks. ” For further information on Get Spotted visit www. crystalpeakscentre.com

INTERVIEW It would be hard not to already know some prior knowledge about Mini Viva; a top ten hit in 2009 with ‘Left My Heart In Tokyo’ became iconic, followed by dance floor filler ‘I Wish’ which stole the hearts of British public music lovers. The English duo consists of Frankee Connolly and Britt Love, who have successfully taken our country’s music industry by storm. Mercury caught up with Britt, one half of the lively pop group, to find out about the band’s aspirations for the future and how it feels to be known as the ‘Tokyo Girls.’ Time and time again, manufactured girl groups have fallen into the trap of ‘one hit wonders,’ something which Mini Viva want to steer well away from. ‘We want people to see us as Mini Viva not just as the Tokyo Girls, we’re not all about that one song.’ Ambitious and eager for their popularity to expand, the girls’ are taking every opportunity to get themselves out there. In 2009, they supported widely popular girl group The Saturdays, which they describe as ‘a great experience to have under our belts. We were so young and were just getting started. As performers we grew up so much and had such a great time.’ Not bad to say the group has only been together since 2008. Inspiration is something Mini Viva heavily rely on, however Britt was keen to tell us that ‘individually, we both have very different idols and tastes. We love performing upbeat songs that people listen to and instantly want to hit the dance floor.’ It’s fair to say that the group have already fulfilled this goal; their tracks are a sure favourite among young party animals throughout the UK. However, the girls argue that their sound isn’t just for the younger generation. ‘Our music is not too young and not too old. We rap and we sing. It’s important to have a cool edge, and we feel we have that street cred. We’re not too feisty, but feisty enough.’ Hungry for more than just ‘home success’, Mini Viva have ambitious plans for the forth-coming summer. ‘We’re touring America for three weeks this July to get ourselves known out there and will be making an appearance at the Isle of White Festival in June. We both

love going to festivals, so to be apart of them is even better!’ Sounds as thought they’ve got a hectic summer ahead of them. Along with this, the girls’ also are going to be busy back on home turf. ‘We’re the main support for Diversity and are touring with them next month. It will be great being the main support act.’ Using this opportunity to it’s full potential; Britt went on to confess that ‘we at least hope to be body popping by the end of the tour!’ Also, in the pipeline for the girls is the release of their début album, to be brought out this autumn. Xenomania, their production house, have worked with the likes of Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Kylie Minogue, therefore the group know they are in safe hands. ‘We’re about half way through writing the new album. It has a real edgy vibe to it, its dancey and youthful which sums us up perfectly.’ Like any young girl, Britt was more than happy to give us an insight into where the group buy all their clothes from for their music videos. ‘It all comes down to us really. We like to keep it really cool, trendy. We like the futuristic look but want to keep it real so buy lots of our clothes from Topshop. We are cool, vibrant and cheeky and we want to get that across!’ We hope an influx of metallic jackets and shiny platforms isn’t going to hit our streets any time soon then. All in all, Mini Viva are more than just the ‘Tokyo Girls.’ They’re driven by success and have a passion for music, which will be sure to take them high places. Mini Viva will be support to Diversity on the14th April 2010 at the City Hall, Sheffield.

WIN WIN SITUATION!

2010 looks set to be Ellie Goulding’s year. Having already been touted as One To Watch by numerous critics, she kicked off the new decade with a bang by topping the BBC Sound of 2010. The Welsh lass sits somewhere between a singer-songwriter and synth-pop starlet. Like a kooky British version of Lykke Li or a more danceable Cerys Matthews. Born in Hereford, Herefordshire, England, Goulding was educated at the Lady Hawkins’ High School in Kington, Herefordshire. She attended Hereford Sixth Form College before moving onto university. Goulding learnt to play the guitar and write her own folk-inspired music at the age of fifteen. While attending the University of Kent to study drama, and exposed to electronic music, she developed her sound with the help of Frankmusik, whom she contacted via MySpace. This resulted in her leaving university after two years of study under a gap year arrangement with her tutors, and moving to West London. Prior to the release of her debut studio album, it was announced that Goulding topped the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, which showcases the critics, broadcasters and music industry insiders’ top choices for rising stars and artists for the coming year. She also won the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2010 BRITS (which has previously been given to acts such as Adele and Florence + The Machine), which makes her the only artist to top the BBC Sound of... poll and win the Critic’s Choice award in the same year. Her debut album, entitled Lights has just been released, and you can catch Ellie live when she arrives in Sheffield on the 31st with a show at the O2 Academy.

A former member of Alice Cooper’s band, bassist Kip Winger formed his own group in 1986. Winger specialised in the stylish hard rock that sent Bon Jovi and Poison to the top of the charts. The band’s eponymous debut sold over a million copies on the strength of the rocker “Seventeen” and the ballad “Headed for a Heartbreak.” The band reunited after more than a decade in 2006 for the release of the successful comeback album entitled IV a record that pushed the boundaries of the Winger classic sound to new heights. Dealing with the concept of the military life and what it was like to be a soldier, from a soldier’s perspective, leaving politics at the door. “After Winger IV we toured the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan and made a live record” says Kip Winger. “When the chance came up to do a new Winger record, I envisioned an upbeat totally rocking record that was a cross between the 1st Winger album and Pull. So, Reb and I sat down and wrote all the music in a month or so. I worked for 6 months to finish it in the classic Winger style”. The result is an amazing new record where the four band members: Kip Winger (bass and vocals), Reb Beach (guitars now also in Whitesnake), Rod Morgenstein and John Roth shine with an incredible instrumental and vocal prowess at the service of superb Hard Rock songs, but with an uncanny sense of melody. The title “Karma” represents Winger completing its full musical circle as Kip explains, “We were discussing the very interesting path the band has had and we have all been through so much together. So we went for “Karma” as this is a word that truly sums up the experience of being in the band”. Catch them live at The Corp on the 2nd.

reviews by presley artist: Ultravox DVD/CD: Return to Eden release date: April 5th

Probably the best synth band to ever come out of the ‘70’s/’80’s. Yes we had Depeche Mode, but they only really got to that special level around the time of the Black Celebration album, until then they were very lightweight. Gary Numan was the only other synth act to use the darker side, so to speak. Early Ultravox, fans call the John Foxx years, was dark and slightly punky but with no real success chart wise. When he left and Midge Ure joined as lead singer everything changed and they got the success they deserved. They did 4 albums that were all great, then Midge Ure did his Band Aid stuff with Bob Geldof and then had a No.1 solo single (not ‘cos of his connection with Band Aid surely??? Cynics!). Then he wanted to get Ultravox to sound less electronic, more acoustic, and decided to throw out the brilliant drummer Warren Cann. They did one more album that just wasn’t really Ultravox anymore and then that was it, they were no more. 20 odd years go by, none of them ever talking to each other, a bit of a tragic shame really. Then last year through a radio session Ure and keyboardist Billy Currie

artist:Whitney Houston single: nothing but love release date: April 5th Whitney returned to us all late last year. Many of us saw her perform on TV for the first time in years on the X-Factor. Hmm, was she slightly not there, on something she shouldn’t be or just plain odd? Whatever it was, it got everybody’s attention and so she’s back now with a bang. This new single is pretty understated vocally which is endearing. She doesn’t have to show off like Mariah, we know what she’s capable of. It’s a mid-paced song that’s cool. Its not gonna damage the charts too much I don’t think. These are strange times remember, when even the Robbie Williams Sport Relief single ‘Morning Sun’ cant even break into the Top 40 with all the coverage and promotion that has had, then what chance do a lot of artists have. But anyway, this is a decent single and Whitney still definitely has IT!

did a couple of songs together and then BINGO! They call up the thrown out drummer Warren Cann in Canada and suddenly a reunion is on the cards. So this is the last UK show of that tour. The tour was a massive success, every concert sold out and it was fantastic to see them back together, something that looked like it would never happen. Of course they probably fancied a decent pay day. None of them separately had the success that they had together and now all in their late ‘50’s it’s a nice little earner towards their retirement. What you get here is the concert on DVD and CD, I’d prefer to choose one or the other to be honest with you, I don’t need the CD when I’ve got the DVD? Anyway, gig wise they are not all looking their best especially Ure who has lost all his hair and it gives you a sense of sadness really. But musically they are brilliant, the lightshow is really cool, the track listing is perfection and if you close your eyes it’s the Ultravox of old. Even Ure has got that swagger, the cool way of playing guitar back that he lost for so many years. If you want to reminisce or just see a great dark synth band then this is worth getting.

FAKE FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR 2010 BUDGET BLOW FOR CLUBLAND Get ready for summer and the 2010 Fake Festivals Tour, which is even bigger than last year’s! Fake Festivals is touring again this year, and 2010 promises to be bigger, and if possible, even better than last year. Sandall Park Fake Festival is the second date of the 2010 tour, and will be held at Sandall Park, Doncaster on Saturday 22nd May from 1.00pm. As usual there will be some great emerging support acts, giving locals the chance to see some of possible big names of the future on the music scene. “We have a fantastic line up this year,” says Jez Lee, owner of Fake Festivals. “There are some amazing new bands that have been begging us to join the 2010 tour. Fake Festivals franchised at the end of last year, and we have already sold four franchises, with another one soon to come. This has increased the tour to 30 festivals this year, and has enabled us to include the new bands such as Kings of Lyon and The Fillers!” Last year Fake Festivals secured Channel 5’s The Gadget Show to undertake

one of their challenges by Ortis Deley, and they also had a visit from NME’s news editor, Paul Stokes. “As a seasoned festival veteran for 15 years, there’s nothing phoney about Fake Festival’s atmosphere,” says Paul. “There’s definitely nothing fake about that!”Headlining the festival this year will be Kings of Leon (Kings of Lyon) The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (The Really Hot Chili Peppers) and The Killers (The Fillers), along with local support acts. Expect some high-octane energy on stage as the bands thrash out your favourite anthems, giving performances not to be missed. “Fake Festivals are what we as a band look forward to every year,” says Lynden Edwards of the Really Hot Chili Peppers.

“Not just because the set up is spot on, but the fact that the crowds are awesome. Roll on the summer!” For more information and those all important discounted early bird tickets which finish on 22nd April, and local ticket outlets, please visit www.fakefestivals.co.uk.

Doncaster’s 20th Annual Beer Festival gets the XX factor!! Lovers of real ale across the region are drooling with anticipation as the countdown begins for one of the region’s biggest and best beer festivals. After last year’s runaway success, at which fans of traditional ale and cider drank every last drop, Doncaster CAMRA has pledged to make this year even better. The XX factor will be apparent everywhere, as the organisers redouble their efforts to bring more to this year’s festival. There will be more real ales, more traditional cider and perry, more continental bottled beers and more entertainment. Doncaster CAMRA’s 20th Annual Beer Festival will again be staged at ‘The Hub’, the headquarters of Doncaster College, on April 8th 9th and 10th, where visitors can discover for themselves that The Hub really is The Pub, as the event will feature approximately 100 cask conditioned beers, complemented by a fine array of traditional ciders and perries, all kept in tip-top condition. Those looking for something a little different will be able to seek out the now legendary continental beer bar, which will feature bottled beers from beyond these shores. Some will be familiar, whilst there are some surprises for the more adventurous to try!

Entertainment has been arranged for the Friday and Saturday sessions, with top billing going to trad’ Irish folk/rock band ‘James Cannon and the Sinners‘, who are booked to appear on Friday night. On Saturday, there is a music festival feel to the event, as several different musical styles will feature during the afternoon. There will be short sets from local bands ‘Steel and Strings’ and ‘In Fear of Olive’, and there is also a return visit by the ‘Rockingham Brass Band’, who are always a big hit at The Hub. Popular local band ‘Strange Triangle’, will perform on Saturday evening and seem to have made this spot their own, playing their usual well received range of rock and pop standards. Hot food will be served until 9.30pm throughout the festival and a family area will also be available on Friday and Saturday until 6pm. Drinkers will also be able to join the Campaign for Real Ale at the event at a special discount rate. Those who sign up as new members at the Festival can enjoy free entry to the remaining sessions, plus discounts on CAMRA products and reduced admission at other festivals. Being centrally located, The Hub has proved to be very popular

We aim to introduce people to the fantastic brews available and want everybody to come along and see for themselves, as there will be something to suit all tastes. From dark stouts, milds and porters to amber ales and pale hoppy beers, designed for the more delicate palate.” “This year we have decided to focus on the delightful products of craft brewers from the West Country and parts of Wales. I look forward to seeing real ale fans from all parts of the region, gathered together to enjoy the different styles of beers, at our best Festival yet.”

the chancellor imposed a tax on cider which further threatens sales, profit and jobs. It was this government which went back on it’s promise when it came to the smoking ban. Private members clubs were to have partial exemption which meant that they could have had designated smoking area. Without consultation or consideration, at the last minute, they imposed a total ban. Fuel, alcohol and tobacco taxes pay this government billions of pounds in taxes year after year but we see precious little back when it comes to supporting our clubs and pubs and if this carries on we will inevitably see more and more clubs and pubs closing.

HELP! WE NEED AN ABBA GIRL Abba Fever are a live 5 piece Tribute band to the 70’s super band “Abba”. We have been established for 14 years & our current line up has been together for 4 years. We are based in Nth Notts / Sth Yorks and perform 2/3 nights a week across the U.K. in every kind of venue including Hotels, Racecourses, Theatres, Weddings, Radio Shows, Restaurants and sometimes abroad too! Unfortunately our current Agneatha (the blonde) is leaving. We’re obviously saddened by this; however this gives a great opportunity to a suitable girl singer. We’re looking for someone who has a professional attitude, good stage presence, great voice, able to take responsibility & the ability to buy a round of beers and put up with strange smells in the back of the van! Hair colour is not important as we have a vast wardrobe! Having own transport would be an advantage to able the girl to get to pick up points. Because we only work 2/3 shows a week this is an ideal job to work around other work commitments. Both our current girls do have other mid-week jobs. Please contact Steve on 01623 439 434 / 07932 894 300 or Pat on 01302 350 876 for more details. More information can be found here: www.abbafeverband.com

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS

THE PROUD FATHER A husband, so proud of the fact that his wife had given birth to 6 children, begins to call her “mother of six” rather than by her first name. The wife, amused at first, chuckles. A few years down the road, the wife has grown tired of her husband’s description. “Mother of six,” he would say, “Get me a beer!” “Hey mother of six, what’s for dinner tonight?” This type of situation persisted to a boiling point. Finally, while attending a party with her husband, he jokingly yelled out, “Hey mother of six, I think it’s time to go!” The wife seized the moment and shouted back, “I’ll be right with you - father of four!”

THE SECRET OF A LONG AND HAPPY MARRIAGE I met a man who had been married for 66 years. “Amazing. 66 years!” I said. “What’s the secret to such a long, happy marriage?” “Well,” he replied, “It’s like this. The man makes all the big decisions... and the woman just makes the little decisions.” “Really?” I responded. “Does that really work?” “Oh, yes,” he said proudly. “66 years, and so far, not one big decision!” RECOVERING FROM THE SURGERY A husband was just coming out of anaesthesia after having surgery in the hospital, and his faithful wife was sitting at his bedside. His eyes started to open and he quietly uttered, “You’re beautiful.” He soon drifted back to sleep, and after awhile he woke up and said, “You’re cute.” “What happened to beautiful?” she asked him. “The drugs are wearing off,” he replied.

Summertime officially began at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, a time I look forward to immensely as it heralds the start of the barbecue season and an opportunity to do some gardening as the nights stay lighter. That is were it not for the present inclement weather, with snow forecasted for later in the week. A thought did cross my mind on Monday morning whilst staying with my girlfriend, as I heard the nearby church clock strike. Who goes into the church at 2 a.m. to put the clocks forward? This must be the case nationwide, and I, for one, would not fancy walking through a churchyard alone at two in the morning. I am indebted to Dene Michael, from Black Lace, who reminded me of the fifteenth anniversary of the untimely death of former Smokie front man, who was sadly tragically killed as a result of a bus accident in a blizzard on a German autobahn, returning from performing on stage with top band Smokie. He also appeared with Dene Michael in Black Lace. It says much about Alan that he is so fondly remembered after fifteen years, and also his dear friend, Dene Michael for keeping his memory alive. The good die young is particularly appropriate. I took the opportunity to see three times Mercury award winners’ One Way and I am pleased to report that they were breathtakingly great. Lead singer Gaz has an amazing voice, and it was easy to see why this Bradford-based band has held on to their award for

the past three years. All of the band were exceedingly pleasant, and don’t be surprised if this excellent band retain their title for the fourth time next year. They sold a fair number of CDs on the night, and I was fortunate to receive one free gratis. I have listened to this fine album, and it is definitely one for my car. It is admirable that Dick Armitage booked this high quality act for Hilltop Club, Dronfield, and of course it was not far for me to travel. Hilltop Club is extremely well run, and is in good financial shape because of this. Next weekend is a dream for me with top Abba tribute band Bjorn Again appearing at the City Hall, as part of their nationwide tour, and I am particularly looking forward to seeing my friend Diana Edwards (Agnetha) on the night. Another class act is appearing at the Forest Showbar on Sunday night. I refer to Paul Pashley, who famously sang at Wayne Rooney’s wedding. I have had the pleasure of seeing Paul before, and believe me he is an amazing talent, who if you close your eyes, you could be listening to ‘Old Blue Eyes’ Frank Sinatra. Ex Sheffield United players are strong as publicans in Dronfield. We already have my good pal Kevin Gage and now we have another, ex Blades goalkeeper, Paul Thomlinson who, with his beautiful wife Veronica, has returned from a spell in Spain to take over the Hyde Park, a public house previously kept by his parents and also his brother. Paul and I go back a long way and I wish him and Veronica

much success and welcome home. The pre-election budget was predictably bland, with Alistair Darling craftily increasing fuel duty bit by bit so as not to look so bad in the forthcoming election. This government has been a disgrace, mis-handling the economy, and I urge all readers to show their disapproval by ensuring that David Cameron is our next Prime Minister. If anyone thinks that this government has been in favour of the working man, all you have to do is check the price of alcohol, cigarettes and petrol, three commodities that should not be too expensive for anybody. I t is significant that under this government, we are back to the bad old days of industrial action, with British Airways, the railways and civil servants all on or about to go on strike. I am happy to report that my massive weight gain from when I stopped smoking has now been redressed, and I am now back to my former non-fighting weight of thirteen stones and seven pounds. This has not been achieved by using any of the better known diets, but by my own formula, which I am happy to share. Cereal or nothing for breakfast, definitely no potatoes, and just one more meal at teatime, but the most important ingredient is twenty Benson and Hedges per day. My dear old Dad, God bless him, would have been one hundred and four this week.

A BIG GAME HUNTER A big-game hunter went on safari with his wife and mother-in-law. One evening, while still deep in the jungle, the Mrs awoke to find her mother gone. Rushing to her husband, she insisted on them both trying to find her mother. The hunter picked up his rifle, took a swig of whiskey, and started to look for her. In a clearing not far from the camp, they came upon a chilling sight the mother-in-law was backed up against a thick, impenetrable bush, and a large male lion stood facing her. The wife cried, “What are we going to do?” “Nothing,” said the hunter husband. “The lion got himself into this mess, let him get himself out of it.”

DANCING ON ICE Congratulations to Hayley Tamaddon who won this year’s Dancing On Ice with Gary Lucy coming second. Both skaters are appearing on the 2010 tour which starts in Sheffield on Thursday 8th April. After wowing more than 750,000 people across the country in previous years with stunning ice performances, skating legends Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean will embark on a fourth live UK tour of Dancing on Ice which comes to Sheffield Arena for 6 performances from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th April. TV personality and one time King of the Jungle, Christopher Biggins is to join the Dancing on Ice Tour judging panel. He will be joined by another new addition, Danny Young who will be making a special guest performance with Frankie Poultney performing his bare chested Rocky Routine, as well as Kyran Bracken, who was crowned ice dancing champion in the 2007 ITV1 series. Both will assume their seats behind the desk alongside judges from the hit ITV1 show, Karen Barber and Nicky Slater. Biggins, who has no ice skating experience but who is an avid fan of the show will be judging performances by Inbetweeners star Emily Atack, 2Point4 Children actress Clare Buckfield. Coronation Street’s Gaynor Faye, ex-Hollyoaks actor Chris Fountain, Boyzone’s Mikey Graham, ex-Footballers’ Wives actor Gary Lucy, former Emmerdale star and this year’s winner Hayley Tamaddon and former X factor champ Ray Quinn. Speaking about joining the Dancing On Ice Tour, Biggins said, “I am thrilled to be on the judging panel of Dancing On Ice Tour this year. I’m very much looking forward to joining the celebrity skaters and their partners in all their sparkling finery, as we take this favourite show of mine on the road to arena audiences all over the UK.” The format for the Tour is the same as previous years and as in the hit ITV1 show, the audience will be able to use their mobile phone to text vote for their favourite dancing couple. The votes will then be added to the scores from the Judges to decide the winner. Once the votes have been counted, the winning celebrity will join their skating partner to perform a magical finale. As with the previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity; more than £80,000 has been raised to date. All of the celebrities will be trained and choreographed by Torvill & Dean, who will also perform on the tour.

The professional skaters on the Dancing on Ice Tour this year are Fred Palascak dancing with Emily Atack; Lukasz Rozycki dancing with Clare Buckfield; Matt Evers dancing with Gaynor Faye; Brianne Delacourt dancing with Chris Fountain; Melanie Lambert dancing with Mikey Graham; Maria Filipov dancing with Gary Lucy; Dan Whiston dancing with Hayley Tamaddon and Alexandra Schauman dancing with Ray Quinn. Tickets for Torvill & Dean’s Dancing On Ice at Sheffield Arena, priced £32.50-£65 (booking fee may apply) are available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 and online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk ‘ONE IN A MILLION’ CHANCE TO ICE SKATE WITH TORVILL & DEAN LUCKY WINNER FROM DONCASTER REVEALED… The millionth ticket for the Dancing on Ice UK Tour has been sold to one lucky fan from Doncaster who wins a once in a lifetime opportunity to skate with legends Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean. The Olympic gold medallists recently revealed that the live arena tour, now in its fourth year, was close to selling its millionth ticket. To celebrate the occasion the legendary ice duo decided the person who bought the millionth ticket would be treated to a one to one master class with them on the ice. Lynne Rothwell, aged 50 from Doncaster, was the lucky winner when she bought tickets to the show at Sheffield Arena on Thursday, March 26. The mother of two who used to skate when she was younger said she first became a fan of Torvill & Dean after watching their flawless Bolero performance at the 1984 Olympics. Lynne, a senior manager for the NHS said she had watched each series of the ITV1 Dancing on Ice show and had been particularly looking forward to seeing the celebrities perform live at the tour. She said: “I’m over the moon. I used to skate when I was a girl in Sheffield, I can’t believe it. I haven’t skated for about 10 years but I can’t wait to meet Torvill & Dean”

SURFACING

Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th Your workload is picking up again, forcing you to adhere to a strict schedule. If you don’t follow a routine, your health will start to flag. Beware of overindulging in food and drink. Although you normally don’t have difficulty finding time for exercise, this could be a problem now. There just aren’t enough hours in the day for you to finish everything you need to do. An irritating youngster is getting on your nerves. Take a deep breath before taking them to task. TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Anything involving art, film, music, or fashion is worth pursuing. Although you’ll have to take a financial risk, it will be worth the sacrifice in the long term. You have bucket loads of talent. Using it to make a living will give you a great deal of happiness. It will also give you the resources you need to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. Someone in the family might not think much of your ideas because they’re jealous of all the opportunities waiting for you. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Creating a cosy home for your loved ones is your chief priority. Your nearest and dearest appreciate all the hard work you do for them. Make sure you don’t get so wrapped up with responsibilities you forget to have fun. A trip to a romantic hideaway with a passion packed partner will do you a power of good. If you’re single, you could meet someone special at a cooking, gardening, or wine tasting class. Avoid rowing with an argumentative neighbour. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd A business trip is in the cards. Although you hate spending time away from home, you need to attend to this matter before it spirals out of control. Signing a new client or making a lucrative deal will pave the way for a financially secure future. Beware of going on an emotional spending spree. If you’re feeling down, put your feelings in into words and share them with a long time trusted friend or confidante. Avoid retail therapy, it could cost you more than you think. LEO July 24th - August 23rd Shrewd business sense is critical to your success. Although it’s great you are so generous, you have to remember the bottom line. Don’t extend people unlimited credit, or you’ll never recoup your losses. Be prepared to go after your debtors, even at the risk of losing some friends. Above all, don’t mix business with pleasure. If the prospect of bill collecting is too terrible, hire somebody to do the job, but don’t micromanage them or they won’t be effective. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd You feel compelled to keep order in an increasingly chaotic situation. Although you will play a key role in keeping people safe, it’s important to remember you can’t rescue destructive rebels from themselves. A bitter enemy is doing everything they can to block your progress. Nothing you can do or say will change their view of you. Channel your energy in a more positive direction, like learning a language or taking up a musical instrument.

CONVENIENCE STORE

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd A hospital, university, or government agency can be tremendously helpful in the weeks ahead. You need the support of a big player to put your plans into practice. Don’t hesitate to ask for a grant or scholarship. A male friend is behaving strangely. Try to keep your finances separate from them, as he may be struggling with problems you can’t understand. Fortunately, your family is poised to rally around you especially when it comes to making a brave decision. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd Who you know is more important than what you know. Cultivate relationships with people with experience in your desired field. These friends will help you get a foothold in an impressive company or organisation. You may wonder whether you will be able to work effectively with an argumentative colleague. Their over the top style is in radical opposition to your understated attitude. Maybe this will be a case of opposites balancing each other well. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st You need to exercise your authority when working on an important job. There’s too much at stake to leave to chance. If some members of your team start slacking off, crack the whip. Yes, people will grumble, but they’ll respect your insistence on excellence. A teacher or expert will try to take advantage of their position. It’s up to you to set them straight. Just because they know more than you doesn’t give them the right to get all high and mighty. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th An interest in spiritual or philosophical matters makes you want to find out more. If you need help get in touch with a guide or guru who can show you the way to the enlightenment you seek. Look for someone who will challenge your assumptions, but will encourage your interests. Jealousy and negativity could rear their ugly heads in an intimate relationship. You need to assert your independence more strongly than ever, or you’ll always feel smothered. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th Be scrupulously fair and even handed when it comes to dealing with shared possessions and joint money matters. You need to be cautious with cash and avoid extravagant gestures aimed at impressing people. Instead look for ways to economise and build a better budget for times to come. Those who care for you most and love you will give you all the support and encouragement you need to make any changes necessary to improve things. PISCES February 20th - March 20th You take your obligations seriously, especially when it comes to family and loving relationships. Although it’s great that you want to go the extra mile for your beloved, it’s also important to let them shower you with affection, too. By allowing yourself to be pampered and petted, you’ll pave the way for happier times. A colleague will be very uncooperative but you’ll find ways to work with them and your boss or line manager will be impressed by how you handle yourself.

MERCURY TAXIS

This week is just a short column as I don’t really like the Easter weekend racing. It’s fairly late for the jumps and too early for the flat. The weather can be quite changeable and consequently the ground becomes another imponderable. It is safer therefore to look forward to the big meetings at Aintree and Punchestown in April. Over the weekend I was having an early review of the National entries and thought that there were a number of interesting candidate. This piece looks at some of the principals. I will update it next week when final runners should be known. I do like Mon Mome. He is a very stout stayer and was last year’s National hero off 11 stone. This year he has 11stone 7lb as the weights currently stand but he won so well last year that the extra weight may not stop him from repeating the feat. He looks to have been campaigned all year with this race in mind and, of all the entries, did probably the best National trial by finishing third in the Gold Cup. Yes he has another year on his back but at the current 12/1 he has to have a very decent chance. Of the others I like Chief Dan George and The Package. Both ran really well in the William Hill handicap at the Festival, Chief Dan George just holding the late thrust of the fast finishing The Package. The Package is my dark horse for the

National. Being by Kayf Tara out of an Ardross mare he will stay longer than the mother-in-law! He looks to be a good jumper on the upgrade and has all the right credentials to provide a bold showing. The current 16/1 looks reasonable value. Eric’s Charm ran a fantastic race at Newbury recently and has my best “last time out” speed rating by some distance. At the age of 12 he is probably past winning the National but he has now won his last two races and you can’t take a performance like his last one too lightly. Newbury has a similar configuration (flat and left-handed) to Aintree so, providing he gets round, he must be in with a shout of sorts. At the current 66/1 he makes some appeal as an each way chance. Character Building is an interesting entry. He would have carried some of my money had he gone to Cheltenham. An Accordion gelding out of a Roselier mare he should get the distance. He has won over 3m 2f in the past and at stiff tracks like Towcester (which makes the north face of the Eiger look flat). His form figures don’t exactly leap off the page at you but I quite fancy him as an each way possible. The current 25/1 is reasonable, if not spectacular, value. Many of last year’s vanquished re-oppose Mon Mome this time, notably:

Comply or Die (2nd); My Will (3rd.); State of Play (4th); Cerium (5th); Big Fella Thanks (6th); Snowy Morning (9th); Can’t Buy Time (Fell) and Cloudy Lane (unseated rider). All have decent chances but Big Fella Thanks gave a pretty good account when winning last time out and, at only 8, has age on his side. As always luck in running and good jumping will be required elements for this year’s winner and in a well-contested 40 runner handicap you can’t afford to take too short a price. I think that if you have a go you have to have three or four running for you as it is too easy to get yours brought down. Finally one at a big price currently that has a squeak, but only a squeak, is Ellerslie George. He is currently 100/1 but has got round Aintree twice before without falling, once over the National fences. This weekend the Irish Grand National is run on Easter Monday. After his performance at Cheltenham A New Story has to be the call. On Sunday in the Powers Gold Cup I think that the finish will concern Shakervilz, Kempes and Osana. My preference is for the latter who is my bet of the week. Watch out for next week’s Aintree preview and good punting this week.

Ronnie upbeat despite defeat Ronnie Moore was an upbeat manager despite the Millers late defeat at Notts County, praising his teams’ commitment after a battling display. It looked like the Millers had secured a priceless point in their hunt for promotion but they conceded in the 90th minute to a strike by Luke Rodgers. “It was cruel there is no doubt about that,” admitted Ronnie after the game. “I didn’t really see it coming to be honest. For the first 15 minutes we were at sixes and sevens, the two front lads caused us one or two problems, but after that I think that we more than matched them.” There was controversy in the second half when the Millers had a goal disallowed when Marcus Marshall netted, only for the linesman to flag for offside against Adam Le Fondre. “The linesman has said that Alf has tapped it in but how he has seen that I don’t know because he was nowhere near it,” added Ronnie. “What a crucial decision to make. Alfie has sworn blind to me that he hasn’t touched it and then in the end we have been done with a lung punt down the middle from the ‘keeper and we didn’t deal with the second ball. “Football is cruel. Today was a massive game for us but I have nothing but praise for the lads they have given their all.We have come to a really difficult place and more than held our own.”

It is rare that a Play-Off weekend doesn’t feature the Sheffield Steelers in the final four lining up at the NIC in Nottingham for the League’s showpiece tournament, but the 2009-10 play-offs will be just that. The Steelers lost both of their double-leg qualifying games against the Cardiff Devils, the first on Saturday at Cardiff, and the second in front of the home crowd in Sheffield. With notable exceptions, Jason Hewitt, Joey Talbot, Jonathan Zion, Jeff Legue and Matt Hubbauer to name a selection, the team appeared to be lacking the heart and desire usually seen in Steelers’ teams. “It pains me to say this” said Head Coach Dave Matsos “it really does, but we didn’t deserve to go through, we couldn’t play one strong game against Cardiff let alone two, we couldn’t raise our game to the level needed to make the finals.” After the 6-2 trouncing of archrivals the Nottingham Panthers the weekend before, Steelers fans’ spirits were high going into the play-offs, and a large following including a full Supporters Club coach made the long trip to Cardiff for the first leg of the quarter-final. Cardiff opened the scoring to the delight of their fans, with a goal from Phil Hill at 12:35, but Steelers’ Mike Sgroi put the teams back on level pegging with a goal less than three minutes later. Again the Devils took the lead in the second period with a goal on the power play, and not for the first time this season fans watched in horror as the Steelers’ defence parted like the red sea as Max Birbraer came down the ice, scoring the Devils’ third goal. At 56:55 it looked like the Steelers’ play-off hopes were over early, as Matt Miller gave the home side a three goal lead, but Jeff Legue gave a little hope to the travelling support with a goal at 58:53. Sunday’s game was set from the start to be an emotional one, the Steelers’ last home game of the 2009-10 season, and defenceman Randy Dagenais’ last game before hanging up his skates and retiring from the game. From the opening faceoff, however, the hope from

the previous night had gone as ex-Steeler Ryan Finnerty opened the scoring at 2:48. With few penalties called on Cardiff, the Steelers struggled to keep a full complement on the ice, but managed to go into the second period with the scores tied at 1-1 after a goal from Jonathan Zion. In the second period once again the Steelers fell apart, with Matt Miller scoring in the 21st minute of the game, closely followed by Mark Smith and Tyler Michel to give the visitors a 4-1 lead (8-2 on aggregate). Joey Talbot added a powerplay goal at 33:50, but the Steelers had a mountain to climb in the third period. Had it been a Steelers team from previous years, there would have been more than a glimmer of hope that the fires would be stoked in the period break and the team would come back to take the game at least into overtime, however this season the downhearted fans took their seats to watch the rest of the massacre unfold. Mark Smith did not disappoint, adding his second of the night, and though Matt Hubbauer added a consolation goal at 57:28 the Steelers’ season was over as the

Devils sailed easily through to the play-off finals weekend 9-5 on aggregate. The Steelers skated around the ice for their final farewell of the season as “It’s Alright” boomed from the PA system. Maybe “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” would have been a more appropriate track to sum up the Steelers’ season. The Steelers fan base has been cheered by two signings this week, firstly the news that much-missed defenceman Steve Munn will be returning to Sheffield after a season in Japan, and then the news that Captain Jonathan Phillips has resigned for next season. The Steelers season ticket application forms are now available for the 2010-11 season, you can collect yours from the Steelers office at the Sheffield Arena. The SSSC will be holding their Annual General Meeting on May 27th at Outo Kumpu Sports and Social Club on Bawtry Road. All members are welcome to attend though junior members are not permitted to vote. You will need your membership card to enter/vote.

The on-loan hitman - who fired a last-minute winner against Watford on Wednesday - opened the scoring at the Ricoh before ex-Owl Richard Wood hit back for the hosts. But overall, Wednesday were the better of the teams as they enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and thoroughly deserved to head home with at least a share of the spoils. The Owls made one change for the trip to the Ricoh, with Leon Clarke starting in place of Tommy Miller, who suffered a calf injury during the crucial win over Watford at Hillsborough. And Wednesday started brightly as Darren Potter forced an early save from Keiren Westwood before City burst into life and carved two chances inside a minute. First Mark Beevers thwarted Carl Baker with a last-ditch tackle eight yards from goal before Wood saw his powerful header from the resulting corner cleared off the line by Potter. The Owls responded with Eddie Nolan, on target for the first time in his career in midweek, almost doubling his tally but Westwood was down sharply to deal with the defender’s low drive. The visitors continued to press and Potter curled in an accurate free kick that Marcus Tudgay headed narrowly wide. It was a promising opening 20 minutes for the Owls, who played some neat passing football all over the park and came close to gaining their reward when Clarke drilled high into the net past Westwood only for referee Neil Swarbrick to harshly pull play back for an earlier foul in the penalty area by Tudgay. Half time approached with Wednesday in the driving seat and the Sky Blues - who also escaped a decent SWFC shout for handball in the areacounted themselves fortunate to go down the tunnel on level terms. The Sky Blues needed a big improvement after the break and made a triple substitution, with Clinton Morrison, David Bell and Chris Hussey introduced for Freddie Eastwood, Jon Stead and Marcus Hall. But their first threat of the half came from the back when defender James McPake headed just over the bar from Sammy

Sears but his close range effort was ruled out for offside. At the other end, Varney shot high and wide from an Owls counter before Clarke forced a fine save from Westwood, who palmed the striker’s glancing header onto the post. City hit back, though, and McPake went close again, this time heading wide of Grant’s goal just after the hour-mark. But the Owls got the vital breakthrough on 68 minutes. Varney ghosted past Martin Cranie down the left flank and cut inside before executing a perfect shot across Westwood to give Alan Irvine’s side a crucial advantage. Having weathered the brief storm from City, the Owls reverted back to their passing game and the hosts struggled to make a genuine impact on the game. But that was until the 79th minute when Coventry equalised out of the blue and it was that man Wood who hauled the hosts level. Clingan launched a high, hopeful punt upfield and Wood leapt in front of Grant to nod into the empty net and earn his side a point to aid their outside chances of breaking into the play-offs.

Alan Irvine has expressed his disappointment after the Owls ‘turned three points into one’ at Coventry on Saturday. Luke Varney’s second half opener was cancelled out by former Wednesday defender Richard Wood, who levelled for City following a rare mistake by Lee Grant. But Irvine insists that no fingers will be pointed at the Owls goalkeeper, who has once more enjoyed an excellent season between the S6 sticks. Irvine said: “We’re very disappointed because we were the better team. We were by far the better team in the first half, we had some good chances. We didn’t start the second half well but then we started to dominate and get control. Their goalkeeper has made some good saves and in the end we’ve turned three points into one by a mistake. “Lee Grant has been outstanding for us and he was the first one to hold his hand up and say it was his mistake. But if Lee plays as well between now and the end of the season as he has since I have been at the club, then we will be okay.” Wednesday were certainly Coventry: Westwood, Hall hard done by overall having (Hussey 46), Clingan. Mchad a decent penalty appeal Pake, Stead (Morrison 46), turned down as well as a Leon Eastwood (Bell 46), Deegan, Clarke strike ruled out for a Cranie, Baker, Sears, Wood dubious foul at best by Marcus Unused substitutes: KonTudgay. stantopoulos, Gunnarsson, In addition, the Owls bossed Barnett, Grandison most of the game only to emerge with just that one Owls: Grant, Nolan, Beevers, point instead of all three. O’Donnell, Hinds, Simek, “I wasn’t disappointed with Boden, Esajas the draws at Preston and Swansea but I was disapReferee: N. Swarbrick pointed with this one.” Attendance: 17,608 On the plus side, Irvine was full of praise for Varney, whose goal in the Midlands was his second vital strike inside a week following his winner against Watford. He said: “It was a terrific goal with a great dribble and a great disguise. The goalkeeper thought he was going to pull it back but he slotted the ball into the back of the net very, very well at the far post. “Luke has been excellent in that position (on the left of a midfield three) for two games now and he’s scored both of his goals from there, so that shows how important it is to have versatility in the squad.” Meanwhile, the manager has issued an injury update from the Owls camp ahead of the busy Easter period next weekend. He added: “We’ve had Tommy Miller scanned and it doesn’t look good, it’s looking like it could be a tear and he could be out for a few weeks. “Jermaine Jonhnson is getting close, I would expect him to start training again next week and I would also expect Lewis Buxton to be back training then as well.”

TENNER A TICKET FOR SEASON FINALE Sheffield Wednesday is pleased to announce that tickets for the club’s last match of the season against Crystal Palace will be priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children in all home areas of the ground. The Owls’ last match of the season was not previously given a ticket category as the club wanted to gauge the potential importance of this fixture before putting match tickets on sale. And, with Sheffield Wednesday’s status as a Championship club at stake, we wanted to show a gesture of gratitude to our supporters and make it as easy as possible for Wednesdayites to be at this game. Sheffield Wednesday chairman, Lee Strafford, said: “This match against Crystal Palace could be remembered as a pivotal fixture in Sheffield Wednesday’s history and we want as many people to be at the game as possible to help Alan Irvine and his team over the line. “Hopefully the team will have secured their Championship status before May 2 and we can enjoy the match against Crystal Palace as a celebration but, either way, we want to reward our supporters for their loyal support throughout the 2009/10 season as we look to a brighter future together. Providing tickets for £10 and £5 for this match should make it accessible for most Wednesdayites and we hope to have a sell-out crowd for our final

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

Written by Bunsen Bob Since 6pm on Saturday evening I have looked at the bottom half of the Championship league table on precisely 32 separate occasions and it sure makes better reading than it did 7 days ago. The result of yesterday’s game between Watford and Palace will have a big effect on the table and how it impacts us. Any one of the 3 possible results will not be disastrous or filled with joy so we’ll just roll with whatever it throws up. With more twists and turns than a Regi Blinker dreadlock imminent in the fight for survival, I am perversely feeding off the pressure and heightened tension it provokes. Would I rather be sat in mid table ticking off the games as the come and go without a real care? My answer, and it is an honest one, is no. These kinds of situations create legends and memories. These kinds of situations also create heartache and misery but I’m willing to take that risk in order to experience the rapturous feeling of seeing Luke Varney slot home an 89th winner. Admittedly, the feeling was amplified by a generous portion of Kenyan lager (don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it but once you’ve tried it you’ll almost certainly knock it) but that is a mere footnote. As for the Derby game, one will excuse Grant the occasional clanger as without him, I don’t think we would even be discussing any chance of survival. For me he has been our most valuable, consistent and accurate Lewis Hamilton lookalike. He has also been terrific in the sticks. At this point, I must state my admiration for Richard Wood and his conduct at the weekend. I slagged him off to high heaven for holding the club to ransom and demanding to be the highest paid player at the club – I still stand by that sentiment. However, he could’ve easily thrown it back in our faces with his equaliser but he didn’t. I don’t particularly miss him but that was a fine gesture and it is duly noted. What did rankle me was the fact that Chris Coleman was ‘confused’ as to why fans booed a player who simply tried to ‘better himself’. A transfer to Coventry from Sheffield Wednesday is far from bettering ones self in my humble opinion. My dear old great grandfather once said to me, “Bob, don’t ever trust a man who is named after a brand of mustard and looks like a horse.” Wise words indeed.

ISSUE 842

SCUNTHORPE END BLADE’S UNBEATEN HOME RUN The long unbeaten home run was ruined by an outfit which is quickly becoming United’s bogey team. A goal from Paul Hayes in first half injury-time gave Scunthorpe the points and also their first ever victory at Bramall Lane. The intense second half pressure ultimately proved fruitless leaving United in 10th position in the Championship table. Henderson and Yeates returned to the starting line-up for the Sunday lunchtime clash, the duo sufficiently recovered from injuries to take their place in the team at the expense of Little and Stewart, who both dropped to the bench. Scunthorpe’s former Unitedite, Forte, was only amongst the Iron’s substitutes. Sunshine and a strong breeze welcomed the sides onto the lush-looking pitch but it was a subdued start. Both teams only managed one notable attack each in the first 15 minutes but Taylor’s timely tackle prevented McDermott from making progress and a neat United move involving Harper, Quinn, Henderson and then Quinn again resulted in the latter’s delivery flashing across the face of goal. McCann’s 30-yard free-kick, which was gathered at the second attempt by Simonsen in front of the Kop, preceded a spell of pressure by the Blades and both Quinn and Yeates sent in enticing crosses from the flanks. On 18 minutes, from a Yeates corner, Connolly’s prodded effort was cleared off the line by Mirfin and, after United’s wide players had switched wings, an unmarked Yeates headed over after drifting in from the left to meet Cresswell’s pinpoint cross. A number of passing movements encouraged United’s fans but the front two of Cresswell and Henderson were being well-marshaled, whilst a mistake almost handed the visitors the lead. Just

Page 35

after the half-hour Bartley’s short back-pass put Thompson in the clear but Simonsen saved with his body and then gathered. Yeates curled a free-kick just wide with Murphy rooted to his spot in the middle of the goal and, at the other end, Woolford cut in from left but was off target with his shot. Four minutes of additional time at the end of the first half was announced and Scunthorpe took advantage to grab the lead. The lively McDermott got the better of Nosworthy down the visiting side’s right and the pull-back was ideal for HAYES, who managed to beat the diving Simonsen with the aid of a deflection off Bartley. The goal left the crowd frustrated and after the interval there was another quiet start to the half, although Connolly’s cross caused problems in the Scunthorpe box. Just eight minutes of the second half had elapsed before Blackwell made his first change, introducing Camara for Harper, which also prompted a change around in the midfield. Yeates had a free-kick tipped over by Murphy, following McCann’s foul on Quinn, and soon after Cresswell, now on the left, fired wide. United’s second change was switching Little and Yeates, whilst Scunthorpe’s first replacement was O’Connor taking the place of the injured McCann. Expectedly, United were applying most of the pressure. Little’s first contribution was to swing in a free-kick which Bartley headed over and then Camara could not get enough of a touch to a right wing cross on 65 minutes. Scunthorpe remained a threat on the break and it took a onehanded save from Simonsen to keep out Thompson after another neat McDermott pass, but United were quickly back on the offensive with Little almost tricking his way through the visiting

backline. Forte was introduced with more than 15 minutes remaining and he almost squeezed between Bartley and Nosworthy within seconds of being introduced. The former United junior also picked up the game’s first booking, for a foul on Little. At the back post Henderson headed a Little free-kick onto the top of the crossbar but the home side’s offensive options were hit on 78 minutes when substitute Camara again hobbled off. Williamson was Blackwell’s final attacking option. The final ten minutes saw almost constant Blades attacking, although getting through to Scunthorpe goalkeeper Murphy was a problem due to a solid defensive performance by the visitors. On 85 minutes Little’s corner was met by Bartley but Hayes headed clear and Henderson was deemed offside when he connected with another Little cross. Five minutes of injury-time offered hope to Blades fans and three corners in quick succession kept the pressure on but Murphy did well to hook Bartley’s header around the post and hold another delivery into a crowded box. The last chance was an ambitious long-ranged effort from Nosworthy, which failed to trouble the Iron goalkeeper. Blades: Simonsen, Montgomery, Nosworthy, Henderson, Yeates (Little 59), Harper (Camara 53, Williamson 78), Taylor, Cresswell, Bartley, Quinn, Connolly. Unused: Bennett, Stewart, Seip, Lowton. Scunthorpe: Murphy, A. Wright, Williams, Togwell, McCann (O’Connor 61), Hayes, Thompson, Mirfin (Canavan 34), Woolford, McDermott (Forte 74), Raynes. Unused: May, J. Wright, Lillis, McNulty.

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

With barely a whimper, the curtain effectively came down on our playoff hopes after a disappointing defeat against struggling Scunthorpe. Looking at our upcoming fixtures before last weekend, it seemed clear that maximum points from two home fixtures against Scunthorpe and Barnsley would be an absolute must if we were going to sneak a top six finish. So apart from a fixture against our bitterest rivals, there is little of interest left for us in this campaign and thoughts inevitably turn to plans for next season. Reading comments from Kevin Blackwell this week, it seems that no matter how much certain fans

may want him out of the club, as far as he is concerned he is going nowhere. Similarly there is no chance whatsoever that Kevin McCabe will sack a manager who has just about managed to keep a play off fight alive amid the uncertainty of our current injury crisis and revolving door transfer policy. But whether Blackwell is to leave the club or not, something needs to change pretty drastically between now and next season. According to reports we will only have eight contracted players at the start of next season as things stand, and we have heard the extended dance version of Kevin Blackwell’s number one hit ‘We’ve had 23 debuts this season’ every week for as long as I can remember. While we can bemoan bad luck, the reason for our plight is poor planning. You can’t sell five or six of your best players and replace them with journeymen with at best questionable fitness levels and expect to maintain the same levels of football you had before. We need to make several decent quality permanent signings this summer to get our club back on track. I’m not advocating spending millions, but following the example of teams such as West Brom, who find a gem such as Graham Dorrans for £100,000 from the bowels of Scottish football. So here’s hoping for an effective renovation, because if the job is not done properly then we will only be in for another turbulent and ultimately disappointing season.
