SIX WEEKS OF ʻGREENʼ ACTIVITIES LAUNCHED Local people will be able to join in the launch of one of Sheffield’s longest-running city-wide events next weekend. The next six weeks will be packed with great activities for all ages that make up Sheffield’s Environment Weeks. There are many popular events from previous years as well as some fascinating new ones, with themed countryside walks led by experts, cycle rides, talks, exhibitions and open

days at local heritage centres. The Environment Weeks will be launched on Fargate in the city centre by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Graham Oxley, on Saturday (24 April) at 12 noon. Around 25 stalls and activities, featuring local crafts, wildlife protection and advice on green living as well as willow weaving workshops will be on offer between 10am and 4pm, with the popular Loxley Silver Band entertaining city

centre shoppers from 10.30am until 12.30pm. Pat Barsby, Chair of the Environment Weeks Working Group said: “This is the 26th year of the Environment Weeks. They have gone from strength to strength - growing from a one week series of activities to six weeks with over 250 events. I am very grateful to all the volunteers, community groups, organisations and sponsors who have supported the Environment Weeks

this year. We believe that there is something of interest for everyone right across the city, so please go along and give them your support.” The weeks are now established as the highlight of the city’s Spring events and the 48-page programmes, featuring over 250 events, are now available from libraries, First Point and housing offices, health centres and many public buildings. Alternatively, you can access the programme of events at www.

sheffieldenvironment.org Many regular sponsors have signed up to support the event this year including Beauchief Environment Group, Environment Agency, Heeley City Farm, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Conservation Volunteers, Sheffield Town Trust and Veolia Environmental Services. The six week celebration will be full of community events for all ages and most events are free to attend.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 34 Finally we got to complete our collection at the Don Valley Stadium this week. We’ve had a couple of false starts, first where football league membership meant that Rotherham United had to hold a collection for the benefit of the leagues chose charity of Help for Heroes. Then on our rearranged date we struggled for volunteer numbers due to it being bank holiday weekend. But Saturdays game against Cheltenham provided the opportunity and it turned out to be a glorious afternoon and

ideal weather for collecting. We’d like to thank the Rotherham United supporters who dug deep to support the station and help us raise £194.27. This money will go towards the running costs of the station. The collection tins are in action again soon as we head back to the Tanyard shopping centre at Wickersley next week. We have another fundraising venture starting very soon, the Small Charity Car Draw. Organised through The FSI this raffle has just one fabulous prize – a brand new MINI First. We joined the draw last year and as 95.2% of the proceeds of the sale goes to Radio Nightingale it’s an excellent way raise funds. Each ticket costs £2 and can be purchased either online at www.thefsi.org/ charityprofile/radionightin-

gale or offline by contacting us by phone on 01709 304244 or by email to admin@radionightingale. org.uk Ticket sales will be commencing shortly and will continue throughout the summer until the draw is made on 14th October 2010. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. Current volunteer vacancies: • Saturday sports show presenter • Football commentator • Fundraiser • MW transmitter engineer • Voice over artist / creator Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS

DOG BITES A man walks into a pub and sits down next to a man with a dog at his feet. “Does your dog bite?” “No.”

A few minutes later the dog takes a huge chunk out of his leg. “I thought you said your dog didn’t bite!” the man says indignantly. “That’s not my dog.” THE DEAF DRUNKS A man was sitting in a bar and noticed a group of people using sign language. He also noticed that the bartender was using sign language to speak to them. When the bartender returned to him, the man asked how he had learned to use sign language. The bartender explained that these were regular customers and had taught him to speak in sign. The man thought that was great. A few minutes later the man noticed that the people in the group were waving their hands around very wildly. The bartender looked over and signed “Now cut that out! I warned you!” and threw the group out of the bar.

The eagerly awaited televised appearance of the leaders of all the three main political parties on the same platform has now taken place and turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax. The truth of the matter is that Nick Clegg, member for Hallam and leader of the Liberal Democrats evidenced himself to be very charismatic, and very popular as a man, but with little to offer the electorate. Gordon Brown was very dour, having to defend thirteen years of Labour mis-management of the economy, both as Chancellor of the Exchequer under the loathsome Tony Blair and also as probably the worst Prime Minister in history. He does not come across as a person to be trusted with management of the much needed recovery in this country. David Cameron, on the other hand really portrays honesty and integrity and although his education at Eton may not be an asset when seeking the support of the marginal seats voters, right thinking people will surely not be fooled by the promises and manifestoes of the other two contenders. A hung Parliament is now the bookies favourite, which would give a lot of power to the Liberal Democrats, a party clearly not equipped to govern, and so this would not be good for the country. There are times when I wonder what on earth is going on when I read about things that you could not make up. Get this; brave paratrooper Ben Parkinson suffered thirty seven injuries, including severe brain damage, as a result of a landmine blast in Afghanistan. He was originally offered compensation

of £152.000 which was only increased to £570,000 after much public pressure. This brave lad will need a lifetime of care and deserves every penny. Compare this with Tillern Debique, who has won a sex discrimination case against the Ministry of Defence, claiming that the single mother of a four year old daughter was forced to choose between a career in the military or caring for her daughter. due to lack of facilities to look after her. The total amount claimed is well over a million pounds, taking into account loss of earnings, loss of army benefits and pension rights and would you believe £18,000 for ‘Hurt feelings’ This country of ours is unbelievable, yet still is the favourite place to be if you are an illegal immigrant. Another grave miscarriage of justice that caught my eye this week was the more than two thousand penalty awarded against a hotel because a dimwitted handyman, pruning a tree, had put his ladder against the branch that he was cutting, making him fall when the bough broke. Health and safety rules were apparently broken as risk assessments were not carried out. I am sorry, but I cannot envisage it crossing anyone’s mind that anybody could be so stupid. After much shouting and predicting by the fans of each side, the long awaited Sheffield derby match ended in a one all draw. This was not a good result for the Owls who look like having to win the last match of the season against Crystal Palace to survive. However, if Palace beat West Brom and Wednesday lose at Cardiff, and Plymouth and

Watford win, then it is relegation time, and I shall honour my pledge of fifty pounds to Help for Heroes. Rob Hardwick-Jones has a fantastic night at the Lyric Theatre, Dinnington this Friday with Andy Scott Lee, Laura MGann, Tristan Drew, The Impact Showgirls and the intriguingly named Miss Thunderpussy. Ticket enquiries to Rob on 07947723316 Friday is St. George’s day and there are two charity nights which will be outstanding. Craig Daniels, entertainment officer at Firth Park WMC can always be relied to put on a good show on St. George’s night and this year is no exception. This star studded occasion has top television comedian Johnny Casson, Stephanie King’s stage show, Bev Brookes, Mark Ellis and local vocalist Gordon Carr. Tickets are only a fiver and all proceeds go to a very worthy cause. On the same evening, Gary Phillips, top boss at the Forest Show Bar, Rutland Road is hosting a similar event with top local comedian, Jimmy Carol, the star attraction. Gary will also appear, and such is his popularity amongst other acts, there will be a few guest artistes, only to happy to appear on the night. It is my sad duty to report that Maggi, the lovely wife of Sammi, John Sampson, who partners Richie Alexander in The Truth, has finally lost her battle after a long illness. I am sure you will join me in tendering my heartfelt sympathy to Sammi and the family.

The man asked why he had done that and the bartender said, “If I told them once I told them 100 times - NO SINGING IN THE BAR!” UNDER THE STREET LIGHT Late at night, a drunk was on his knees beneath a street-light, evidently looking for something. A passer-by, being a good Samaritan, offered to help. “What is it you have lost?” he asked. “My watch,” replied the drunk. “It fell off when I tripped over the pavement.” The passer-by joined in the search but after a quarter of an hour, there was still no sign of the watch. “Where exactly did you trip?” asked the passer-by. “About half a block up the street,” replied the drunk. “Then why are you looking for your watch here if you lost it half a block up the street?” The drunk said: “Because the light’s a lot better here.”

MICHAEL FLATLEY’S lord of the dance

Dancing legend Michael Flatley will tap his way back onto the world stage as he reprises his role as Lord of the Dance. For a limited run commencing in autumn, 2010, Lord of the Dance starring Michael Flatley will play in venues throughout the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including Sheffield Arena on Saturday 30th October. Tickets priced £75, £49.50 & £35 (subject to booking fee) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 23rd April. Flatley said, “I am very excited to dance again”. I’ve created many shows but Lord of the Dance has a special place in my heart and I haven’t performed in it since 1998.” For 14 years Lord of the Dance has captivated audiences around the world, playing to over 60 million people in over 60 countries in every continent. Michael will be joined by a 40 strong cast, some of whom performed originally with Michael when the show debuted in 1996. It is a phenomenal show and Flatley’s return to it has been hugely anticipated. He just completed a successful tour of Taiwan with ‘Feet of Flames’ that exceeded box office expectations and had audiences begging for more even after five standing ovations. Michael Flatley was catapulted into stardom when he created, choreographed and

produced Lord of the Dance after realising his lifelong dream of taking Irish Dance to another level by creating a spectacle that would break box office records in arenas and stadiums worldwide. Lord of the Dance is a timeless story based on Irish folklore of good versus evil, and through the media of dance and music it is understood and appreciated by every culture; there is no language barrier. Dance has never been more popular and Michael¹s return to the stage promises not to disappoint. “It will be different this time around” remarks Michael, “I¹ve achieved my success and I’m proud of what I’ve done, this is like a victory lap. This time is for my loyal fans who have been there from the beginning.” Tickets priced at £75, £49.50 and £35 (subject to booking fee) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 23rd April in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at ww.sheffieldarena.co.uk or www.arenaticketshop.co.uk

Due to phenomenal demand, Westlife have added a second date to the Sheffield leg of their tour. In addition to Sunday 9th May the band will also perform at the Sheffield Arena on Monday 10th May. Tickets for both dates priced £32.50 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale. Revered for their spectacular live shows, created with visionary William Baker (Kylie, Leona, Bjork) Westlife are thrilled to be returning to the stage two years since their last concert tour. The show will include fan favorites, the band’s biggest hits and brand new tracks taken from their first new album in two years, ‘Where We Are,’ released November 30th 2009. Westlife are among the world’s most prolific touring acts, with eight sell out world tours already under their belts. Their most recent concert tour, 2008’s ‘Back Home Tour’ visited arenas across the UK and New Zealand, culminating in stadium shows in Ireland, including a sell out show at the legendary Croke Park in Dublin. On the show’s arrival at London’s Wembley Arena, it was declared that the boys had sold more tickets at the venue than any other act and had played a record number of dates there, an amazing 25. The tour will support the band’s brand new album ‘Where We Are’, which was recorded during much of 2009 in studios across Europe and the US. The record features work from pop’s finest craftsmen, including grammy

nominated Ryan Tedder (Leona Lewis, Beyonce) Steve Robson (James Morrison, Take That) Steve Booker (Duffy) Louis Biancaniello and Sam Watters (Whitney Houston, Anastacia.) and Shaznay Lewis, who co-writes a track with band member Mark Feehily. These stellar production teams have helped the boys create a new and contemporary sound, whilst retaining those classic Westlife soaring melodies and rousing lyrics. Featuring the already massive hit single ‘What About Now,’ as seen on The X Factor, it’s a collection bound to excite fans and pop enthusiasts alike. No pop band can compare to Westlife’s extraordinary success. During their 11 years at the top of pop’s hierarchy, the band has sold over 40 million records globally. In the UK alone they have scored nine multi-platinum albums and a record breaking 14 No.1 hits (behind only Elvis and The Beatles). They have also picked up innumerable awards and appeared on hundreds of magazine covers around the world. They are the only recording artists to win the prestigious ‘Record Of The Year’ an incredible four times (other top awards include two BRITS and an MTV Europe Award). Tickets for Westlife at Sheffield Arena priced £38 (subject to booking fee) are available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena. co.uk

FLUX PAVILION & DOCTOR P

LIVE_REVIEW artist: N-DUBZ venue: O2 Academy 1/04/10 If hip hop highlights the generational divide then nobody highlights this better than N-Dubz. The queue of teenagers that assembled outside the Academy stretched all the way to the Hallam University Building. I had arrived at seven like I’d been told and I found myself ushered to what I was told was the ‘Meet and Greet’ queue. The ‘Meet & Greet’ is a new phenomenon to me (though I was assured it has existed before tonight) and I found out that these kids (or more likely their parents) had paid over one hundred and fifty pounds for a chance to eat cold sandwiches and shake hands with the N-Dubz. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with this as I once paid three hundred pounds for a dinner with Ian Botham, and had these youngsters not bought these exclusive tickets then they probably would have spent the money on annoying ringtones and woolly hats (all of which I presume you can buy from the N-Dubz merchandise stall anyway). So what is it about Dappy, Fazer and Tulisa that makes these teens part with their hard earned paper round money? Music is part of our identity and clearly the band represented something the fans all identified with. Where as I on the other hand was clearly identifiable as not being one of them. Firstly I was the only one wearing shoes (which were beige, suede and covered in Ribena by the end of the gig), I also think the tweed blazer was too much, but luckily I left the pipe at home. As I stood in a sea of toddlers and teens I felt like I had arrived at a Smash Hits poll winners party and I’d been nominated for the award for ‘Most Boring T**t’. My isolation was amplified by songs like ‘Should have put something on’, which I later found out was not referring to the regret of deciding against wearing a coat on a breezy day but in fact dealing with the realities of sex without a condom…wow! The Dubz (maybe this is what they are known by to their as fans) started with the tracks ‘No One Knows’(wich I definitely didn’t), ‘Na Na’, and ‘Strong Again’. What was immediately apparent was how easy they found it to connect with their crowd, and it was more like a party at a friend’s house whilst their parents have gone to Bogna for the weekend than the usual rituals of rock n roll gigs. I had rarely seen a band dominate a crowd the way N-Dubz were doing tonight. As a live act they had honed their act to almost perfection, each knowing their strengths and not venturing far from their particular roles. Though the microphones at times were inaudible, the beats monotonous and the backing dancers at times were more of a spectacle than the actual band, none of this seemed to matter. Their fans loved them, and most spent the night singing the words to each other or filming it on their phones rather than concentrating on what the group were actually doing. Only somebody as out of touch as me could manage to restrain themselves from singing along to songs as catchy as ‘Number One’ and ‘Playing with Fire’. These are well crafted pop songs and as catchy as anything being exported from her majesty’s former colony, America. I feel bad saying anything negative about N-Dubz, because I know I’m being a snob. Before the gig most the audience looked like the only things they found exiting were watching a burning car or filming someone like me getting slapped across the face and tonight they got the same thrill from watching N-Dubz, so they cant be that bad. N-Dubz remind me I’m not young anymore and that’s probably the only reason I don’t like them, but in the words of Dappy himself, “we don’t give a f**k about what you think” and they shouldn’t because there’s nothing offensive about N-Dubz and the fact I’m offended just shows I’m too old for this skit.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE! Shakespears Sister is a synth-poprock band formed by former Bananarama singer–songwriter Siobhan Fahey in 1988. It was Fahey’s first musical project since leaving Bananarama. Later in 1989, American backing vocalist and guitarist Marcella Detroit was featured more as London Records presented the band as a duo. The name is taken from the title of the song “Shakespeare’s Sister” by The Smiths and in reference to Virginia Woolf’s work A Room of One’s Own. Shakespears Sister’s, first top-ten hit was “History” and the debut album, “Sacred Heart”, also went top ten, though further singles taken from the album were less successful. Taking some time off due to both members’ pregnancies, Shakespears Sister returned in late 1991 with the release of the single “Goodbye Cruel World”, which peaked at number 59 in the UK Singles Chart. However, in early 1992, the duo released what would become their biggest hit single, “Stay”. The single reached number one in the UK for eight weeks. It was also a six-week number one in Ireland, and became their biggest US hit, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The success of the single was enhanced by a campy, gothic music video. After a year-long world-wide tour throughout 1992, Fahey cancelled further European touring due to physical and emotional exhaustion and subsequently admitted herself into a psychiatric unit with severe depression. Following this, Shakespears Sister were nominated for several BRIT Awards, including best group, best album, best video, best single and best female artist (for Fahey). However, out of these they only won Best Video for “Stay”, which was voted for by the British public. At the 1993 Ivor Novello Awards it was announced that Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit had split. Fahey was not present at the awards due to personal problems, however Detroit was present and was unaware of the split until the public announcement. According to Marcella Detroit, the pair have occasionally been in touch via e-mail since, but have not met in person since 1993. Shakespears Sister then reverted to Fahey on her own again till 1996. Then after a 13-year hiatus, in 2009, Siobhan Fahey resurrected the name and released a new body of work. She is now out on tour and she brings her show in support of her fourth record, entitled ‘Songs From The Red Room’ to Sheffield on the 24th at the O2 Academy. With their new material designed for the live arena, prepare for clear arrangements, catchy melodies and high energy throughout as seminal rock band UFO tread the boards at the O2 Academy on the 27th. For UFO, it’s always the audience who passes the final judgement on the quality of a song. Only when a number has proved its worth at a UFO gig, can Mogg and the rest of the band be confident that it will also stand the test of time. So the live situation always plays a decisive role in the back of the minds of UFO’s creative spirits when they start working on a new album. “The parameters for our new tracks are that they have to work live,” he explains the selection criteria applied to the material on The Visitor, which UFO are touring extensively this year. The three original band members, Phil Mogg (vocals), Andy Parker (drums) and Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards) plus American world-class guitarist Vinnie Moore composed more than 35 tracks for their latest album (bass player and original member Pete Way is currently suffering from a liver disease and was unfortunately not available for the studio production), thirteen of which were thoroughly tested at an intensive meeting in Hannover, Germany before they were arranged in detail and rehearsed. Drums and bass parts were recorded immediately afterwards at the Area 51 Studio in Celle, while Paul Raymond contributed rhythm guitar and keyboards in London and Vinnie Moore put down additional rhythm guitar parts as well as the guitar solos in Delaware, USA. When Phil Mogg travelled to Area 51 to record his vocal parts, the tracks already featured clearly defined outlines. “All those who have been into UFO for a long time will find all our characteristic trademarks on The Visitor, and anybody new to the band will enjoy our enthusiasm and dynamism,” frontman Phil Mogg enthuses on the subject of the new songs. The Visitor sees the band benefiting especially from their collaboration with Vinnie Moore, who joined UFO in autumn 2003 and has made an excellent impression on the albums, Mogg: “Without running down previous UFO line-ups, it’s been a long time since we had a team as strong as this one. Vinnie contributes his energy and amazing guitar technique, and in Andy’s return we’ve seen the reappearance of a musician who has always been very important to the band’s original sound.” So it’s no surprise that The Visitor features the same musicality and energy which UFO fans have come to cherish from the band’s tours in the past five years. Traditional rock music that could hardly sound more classic, with gritty hooks, Vinnie Moore’s powerful riffs and leads, and Phil Mogg’s lyrics full of eccentric humour, as well as a talent for observation and occasionally great depth. This is one of the classic rock bands don’t miss ‘em!

CHASE & STATUS ARRIVE AT THE ACADEMY Check this out…… Plug have managed to secure a date on the latest tour for drum and bass legends CHASE AND STATUS. Wednesday 5th of May is going to be a mental night, and will be held at the O2 Academy (they’re so popular they’ve had to find a bigger venue to fit everyone in!) Huge tunes, on a huge sound system from a duo well on top of their game. Just the way we like it. Since the start of their DJ careers back in 2004, things have been moving very quickly for the London based duo. From their very first release on Renegade Hardware they’ve churned out a continuous supply of quality music, catapulting them into the premiership of Drum and Bass. The smash hit album More Than A Lot and single End Credits (alongside Plan B) have further cemented the duo as serious heavyweights on not only the drum and bass scene but the music scene as a whole. Their live show is a cracker too, and not just 2 blokes staring down at a laptop. Live drums, MCs and a full on in your face lighting set-up all combine to dazzle your ears and eyes. reviews by presley artist: Hole single: Skinny Little Bitch release date: April 26th Much criticised and much maligned is Hole’s front woman Courtney Love. She was always gonna get verbally attacked for the simple fact of being married to Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. She was partially blamed for his suicide; she’s forever being blamed for how she handles his career since his death. But who are we to attack people’s private lives when we have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. She has since then been extremely scandalous, of that there is no doubt. Her partying is legendary, her interviews over the years have been as close to bizarre that your ever going to get, but entertaining?...........f**k yeah! And that is what I want from my Rockstars! Even the fairly recent affair with Steve Coogan (aka Alan Partridge) went mental and ended with her blaming him for actor Owen Wilson’s attempted suicide??? But, one very important thing…………Hole’s music is great rock n’ roll and always has been. Courtney is a great rocker, she’s a great performer to watch and of course you get the added element of you’re never quite sure what she may do next, I love that, its exciting and edgy. Her new album and this single have been delayed numerous times but it’s finally upon us. The title isn’t quite original (it’s actually a fairly recent Angelspit tune) but Courtney no doubt doesn’t give a **** about that. The song is pure Hole. Its does exactly what it says on the tin. Its as good a song as ‘Celebrity Skin’ and rocks out brilliantly. Live it will be a stormer especially as the end out speeds up, gets faster and faster and ends in a crescendo of guitars. She plays Manchester and Birmingham in May and will definitely be worth checking out, it’ll be a riot.

artist: Adam Lambert single: For Your Enter.... release date: April 26th

“Who?” You may be asking. Well, Adam was on American Idol last season. He came second which was just plain wrong! He was without doubt the best performer that’s been on one of these shows since the very first winner Kelly Clarkson and should have won by a country mile. Why? Because he wasn’t the usual, he was different; he was rock n’ roll rather than the bland dross these programs usually dig up. Firstly he looks like a rockstar; secondly vocally he’s incredible and has an incredible range. Every week he would be the person that stood out a mile. It was like having, if you can imagine, Mick Jagger on Britain’s Got Talent, he just got your attention. He was always able to put a different spin on songs that you would never expect, he made everything sound unique. After the program ended the problem would be to find material good enough for him, I’m not sure that the people working around him have managed that yet. It all seems to be a little all over the place. His first single was a cover of Tears For Fears ‘Mad World’ and it was stunning, but that was taken from the program itself really. Since then it’s been a bit too poppy, even edging on GaGa sounding material. This single even has an electro sound all over it, its decent stuff but I believe he should be more of a rocker than a male Lady GaGa. But she’s doing pretty well so I might be completely wrong……………..but I’m not!

YOUR WEEKLY

SPIRITUAL

An Open Mind

HOROSCOPES INNER HORIZONS ARIES March 21st - April 20th A competition at work is draining you of valuable energy. Instead of trying to outdo a colleague, try raising your own game. Acquire some new skills or look for another work opportunity. You might even decide to take a sabbatical and focus on a personal project. Launching your own business, writing a book, or raising a child could be in the cards. Improving your health will give you the necessary energy to tackle the exciting challenges ahead.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Striking a balance between exercising discipline and encouraging freedom is difficult. You’re such a hard worker you sometimes forget to sit back and enjoy the ride. Instead of piling more responsibilities on your plate, take a few days off. Your colleagues will have to pick up the slack, but that’s fine. Usually, you’re the one who has to compensate for everybody else’s shoddy work. A loved one is poised to give you a wonderful gift. Accept it with a grateful heart. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Unexpected changes at work will force you to alter your plans. It may be necessary to downsize your lifestyle. Driving a less expensive car or moving to a smaller home could be in the cards. Fortunately, you’re pretty versatile. The same isn’t true for lovers and loved ones. You will need to help them through the changes ahead. Take some time out of your busy schedule to focus on your relationship. Head for a zoo, museum, or playground together. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd A smooth talker has aroused your suspicions. It’s time to stand up for people who are being used and abused by a manipulative charmer. At first, your warnings about this character will fall on deaf ears. Everybody is eager to rally around this charismatic figure. In time people will realise they have created a false idol. When that happens, you need to be ready to pick up the pieces. There are going to be a lot of disillusioned people around. LEO July 24th - August 23rd Finances are tight, and it’s hard not to take your frustrations out on a romantic partner. At times like these, the two of you need to stand together. The next time you feel the need to lash out, pick up a paintbrush or a power tool. Working on a DIY repair project will make you forget your troubles. It will also leave you with a new and improved living space. If you’re trying to sell your home, it may be necessary to lower the asking price. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd A down in the dumps, pessimistic attitude is harming a close relationship and your partner is getting just a little fed up with it all. Instead of predicting everything that could go wrong with a plan, offer your support. This runs contrary to your controlling nature, but maybe that’s a good thing. By letting go just a little, you’ll make room for spontaneity and romance. You have to admit, it’s been too long since you enjoyed such pleasures. Lighten up! LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd Some upsetting memories make it hard to get any work done. You need to resolve them now, even if it means taking some time off from your job. Get help from a spiritual guide or social worker to help work through your anger and frustration. It may be necessary to confront a teacher or instructor who abused their power. Now that you’re more self sufficient, you’ll be able to stand toe to toe with this manipulator. It will feel so good to reclaim your power. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd A new friend or loving relationship is wreaking havoc on your life. Although it’s exciting to never know what your partner will do or say, you have to admit this relationship has taken you away from your friends. They don’t like this new arrival and think it’s not good for you. Maybe they’re right, but their opinion won’t be enough to break it off. You need to make the decision yourself. Money from an inheritance or legacy will give you a little more independence. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st A move, announcement or decision causes some old feeling to be stirred up. You’re not sure what to think about a relative trying to impose a warped belief system on you. Instead of dwelling on these feelings of resentment, create a lifestyle that makes sense for you. Surround yourself with kind hearted, open minded friends. Stay away from busybodies who enjoy telling others what to think and how to behave. Life is too short for all that. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th Getting the education or training you need will be difficult. Full courses and a lack of instructors are getting in the way of your progress and success. You’ll have to fill your time with something productive while you wait for a place in the next available class. Arranging a party for a friend will be fun. Not everyone will be able to attend, but you can still have a good time with a small group of people. An intimate supper will give everybody the chance to talk. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th A source of income could suddenly dry up. Although the prospect of finding a new job is daunting, you need to get to work. You may decide to launch a business from home. Caring for people’s pets or children will give you the free time necessary to work out a new career plan. These aren’t the best of times to find a full time job, but that will soon change. Meanwhile, you need to find a way to bring in some money without exhausting yourself. PISCES February 20th - March 20th Your erratic behaviour is taking a toll on your personal life. If you’re in a relationship, your partner may be seriously considering a break up. It’s not fair to subject your beloved to a series of crazy whims. Think carefully before making a decision, and then stick to it once you’ve made your choice. If you’re single, it will be difficulty finding love, simply because you’re not sure what you what from a partnership. Maybe you need to be your own best friend right now.

a recharge of our batteries. You would not bash your ipod if its battery was flat; merely charge it up, its common sense. It’s easy to condone some kinds of busy and if day light hours run out and there’s still things to do it follows we will use whatever other hours are available. How ever the time that we go to bed is very important. I personally can see the effect in days when I frequently stay up ‘past my bedtime’. Sleep timing is controlled by the circadian clock, sleep-wake homeostasis, and in humans, within certain bounds, willed behaviour. The circadian clock is an inner timekeeping, temperaturefluctuating, enzyme-controlling device which works in tandem with adenosine, a neurotransmitter that inhibits many of the bodily processes associated with wakefulness. Adenosine is created over the course of the day; high levels of adenosine lead to sleepiness as does the release of the hormone melatonin and a gradual decrease in core body temperature. A University of California, San Diego psychiatry study of more than one million adults found that people who live the longest self-report sleeping for six to seven hours each night. Another study of sleep duration and mortality risk in women showed similar results. However other

near as hectic as mine you may find that it is interrupted, almost rudely, by a need to rest and, dare I say it, even sleep! Frequently in this day and age there seems to be a shortage of hours as we push ourselves to meet unreasonable targets and deadlines. It seems almost ludicrous that I have recently had to remind myself of some basic biological facts like, ‘we sleep for a reason’. Even without burning the candle at both ends, our lifestyles can often result in a counterproductive deluge of stress and exhaustion. I guess that there are many of you out there, like me that have a well used self destruct button; therefore I feel the need to share said basic biological facts with you out of respect for your well being. We need to sleep! Sleep is a naturally recurring state of relatively suspended sensory and motor activity, characterized by total or partial unconsciousness and the inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles.http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep - cite_note-0 The great thing about sleep is it is a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems. It is a veritable reboot of our systems and

studies show that sleeping more than 7 to 8 hours per day has been consistently associated with increased mortality, though this study suggests the cause is probably other factors such as depression and socioeconomic status, which would correlate statistically. It has been suggested that the correlation between lower sleep hours and reduced morbidity only occurs with those who wake after less sleep naturally, rather than those who use an alarm. Sleep deprivation can cause irritability, cognitive impairment, memory lapse or loss, impaired moral judgment, hallucinations, ADHD type symptoms, impaired immune system, risk of type 2 diabetes, increased heart rate, tremors, aches, decreased reactions, growth suppression and even a risk of obesity. I think you will agree with me that none of these are helpful if you want to keep up with your workload. My Grandmother used to swear by a good old forty winks and she lived to a ripe old age and never looked her age either. So I know you’re busy and I know your boss thinks you should be but there has to be a cut off point when your body says ‘I’m tired’ why not stop and sleep if you can? At the very least, try to get to bed at a decent time then you will rejuvenate and be there to carry on the cause the next day. If not you will grind to a halt completely!

MODEL TRAINING AT G CASINO SHEFFIELD G Casino Sheffield has teamed up with The Grooming Academy to launch a campaign for Marie Curie Cancer Care. ‘Become a Model for Marie Curie’, is a workshop which encourages men and women above the age of 18 to train to be a model with

a grand finale catwalk at the casino on 29th April. The workshop event will take place at the casino on 24th April. The budding models will pay a registration fee of £30 and receive a full day of tutorials covering make-up and hair, taking part in a photo shoot and learning how to walk on a catwalk. The day also includes a delicious lunch from the Casino’s gourmet restaurant; a real treat for any food lovers! All models will have their hair and make-up done professionally courtesy of The Grooming Academy for the Grand Finale on 29th April. Their previous

week’s training will be invaluable as they show their talents off at a live fashion show. Friends and family are encouraged to attend what is expected to be a very entertaining evening. Tickets are £5 for entrance and a seat at the show; £1 of every ticket sold will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care. The charitable contribution will help to continue the good work of Marie Curie which includes care for terminally ill people in their own homes at the end of their lives as well as leading cancer research. THE SHOW DID GO ON! Stannington Brass Band were up against it at the weekend - what with volcanoes erupting, flights grounded, and a guest soloist in hospital but in true showbiz style, the show DID go on! A concert in their home village of Stannington was in danger of being cancelled when the band’s Musical Director, Derek Renshaw, rang to say that he was stuck in Egypt with no flights home for several days. The band’s bass trombone player and deputy conductor, Andrew Platts saved the day and put the band through their paces. The concert got off to a rousing start with “Men of Harlech” made famous in the film Zulu. The band put in a polished performance, showcasing its versatility from the big band sound of “The Big Mancini” and the Mexican Mariachi style of “Guadalajara” featuring the cornet section to the haunting “She Moved through the Fair”. No stranger to the art of comparing, Andrew delighted the audience with his quips and anecdotes as well as acquitting himself expertly with the baton. At short notice, John Lee, formerly flugel horn player with Brighouse and Rastrick, also stepped into the breach when guest soloist Richard Walker was taken ill. John delighted the Lomas Hall audience with his opener “Right Here Waiting” and they particularly appreciated his rendition of the local hymn tune “Stannington” specially arranged by David Moore. In the second half, the band provided a stirring backdrop to John’s poignant solo “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar. Peter Mosley, Band Chairman commented “We are indebted to Andrew and John for coming to the rescue at short notice and allowing the concert to go ahead”.

500 Election Candidates sign up to support CAMRA Charter Following the launch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale’s Beer Drinkers and Pub Goers Charter in February, over 500 Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs) have signed up to five commitments to speak up for community pubs, real ale and consumers if elected. Among the supporters are Green Party Leader Caroline Lucas, Labour PPC Ruth Smeeth, Conservative PPC Nigel Evans and Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats. On the basis of current polling, well over 100 of these supporters are set to be elected on May 6th. Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive said: ‘The overwhelming response from PPCs is great news for beer drinkers and pub goers across the UK. We expect the next parliament to contain a huge number of MPs who have committed to vital reforms which are necessary to save the UK pub industry. ‘The issues that matter to CAMRA like reform of the beer tie, protection of community pubs and a fair deal for consumers can no longer be ignored by politicians. Many of CAMRA’s key policies including reform of planning law, amendment of licensing law and encouraging responsible drinking featured in each of the main parties’ manifestos last week.’ Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat Leader said: ‘I am proud to be a signatory to the charter and to help bring attention to the much-needed support required for well-run community pubs, local brewers and consumer rights which all contribute to community life and boost the local economy. ‘Well-run pubs are important to tackling alcohol misuse, they are not part of the problem. Government policies, such as continually raising duty on beer and refusing to reform the beer tie, have led to a situation in which more than 5 pubs a day are said to be closing. It is hugely important that we stand up for the pub industry during these difficult times.’ Paul Kenny, Labour PPC for Boston and Skegness said: ‘I think that CAMRA has done a sterling job over the years and I am very happy to back their Charter. Decent and well-run pubs are the bedrock of our communities and deserve our support.’ Claire Perry, Conservative PPC for Devizes said: ‘I absolutely agree with all of your aims and believe a village pub to be one of the pillars of the local community.’ CAMRA is now encouraging all 500 candidates to integrate their support for CAMRA’s Charter and community pubs with their election campaigning by visiting community pubs, gaining local press coverage and getting involved with their local CAMRA branch. So far PPCs have launched campaigns to save a pub in their constituency, and commissioned campaign beer mats.

IT’S A KIND OF MAGIC

Hi I’m Trevor Thomas from the Breakfast Show on Magic AM - your station for the best of the 60s, 70s and more. It’s my job to help you get going wherever you are in South Yorkshire every weekday morning from 6am, which is for my money the best occupation there is around when you’re as big a music fan as me. We play nothing but real classic songs we’ve all grown up with, danced to and even sang along with, and I’m looking forward to writing regularly here in the Mercury to keep you up to date with what we’re up to. Tune us in on 990, 1305 or 1548 AM/MW, or on DAB digital radio. For starters though this week, here’s a little about me ... Favourite music - Really is a bit of everything but especially 80s Favourite singer - Phil Collins First song I bought - On 7” single, Pop Music by M Best album - Face Value by Phil Collins Star sign - Sagittarius Favourite food - Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding Tea or coffee - Tea always …Or choice from the bar - Pint of bitter Favourite film - Duel Spielberg’s first offering about a lone car driver pursued along the California highways by a mystery truck Favourite TV – outside of the reality stuff and soaps, I am an avid follower of Lost, all about the survivors of a plane crash who end of stranded on a mysterious island which was supposedly all part of their individual destinies Holidays - My favourite destination is really anywhere in the USA - Been a few times to New York, Atlanta and Orlando plus San Francisco, Vegas and Nashville Worst habit - Falling asleep in the cinema, or in front of the TV

POLITICAL ANIMAL WEBSITE We need your help to lobby prospective parliamentary candidates ahead of the next government election on our new interactive website. We want to make sure laws protecting animals are not watered down and progress is sustained under the next government. The Political animal site gives you all the information you need to lobby your prospective parliamentary candidates, debate key issues and help write an animal welfare manifesto for the next government. This is a great opportunity to vote on issues that you feel strongly about.

A unique resource The website gives suggestions on ways to quiz your local parliamentary candidates, and our experts will be able to come online to answer your queries. There is vidoe footage to watch and up-to-the-minute information about Political animal on Twitter too. This is a unique resource, explaining our stance on issues like status dogs, higher welfare farming, wild animals in circuses, and animals used in experiments. RSPCA parliamentary officer Stacey Frier said: The Political Animal microsite is a unique project allowing our supporters to drive the debate by letting politicians know what they want them to do for animal welfare if they are elected. Stacey added “The RSPCA and its supporters have been instrumental in campaigning for change in animal welfare legislation since the Society’s creation in 1824, and we’re urging the incoming parliament to continue to work with us to achieve further animal welfare milestones.” The Political animal site contains a timeline of the last 20 years of animal welfare law, leading up to the Animal Welfare Act 2006, showing landmark changes.

Another guy walks in the bar with a Chihuahua. The first guys sees him, stops him and says “You can’t bring that dog in here unless you tell him it’s a seeing-eye dog.” The second man graciously thanks the first man and continues to the bar. He asks for a drink. The bartender says “Hey, you can’t bring that dog in here!” The second man replies “This is my seeing-eye dog.” The bartender says, “No, I don’t think so. They do not have Chiwauas as seeing-eye dogs.” The man pauses for a half-second and replies “What?!?! They gave me a Chihuahua?!?”

A man goes to a bar with his dog. He goes up to the bar and asks for a drink. The bartender says “You can’t bring that dog in here!” The guy, without missing a beat, says “This is my seeing-eye dog.” “Oh man, “ the bartender says, “I’m sorry, here, the first one’s on me.” The man takes his drink and goes to a table near the door.

A little later on there’s a sad part and suddenly the dog starts crying. This goes on throughout the entire film, laughing and crying at all the right places. A man sitting a few rows back has witnessed the entire thing and decides to follow the man out. In the foyer, he approaches the dog owner and says, “That’s truly amazing!” “It certainly is” The dog owner replied, “He hated the book!”

PUPPY TRAFFICKING AND HELPING TO STOP THE PUPPY TRAFFICKERS Thinking of getting a puppy? Make sure you know where your puppy comes from. Buying a puppy is not as simple as you may think. Sadly, not all puppy breeders and sellers are reputable. There is a dark side to the trade - puppy trafficking. This is where puppies are bred in large numbers for profit, often with little regard for animal welfare. Many puppies fall sick, and some die.

Grim realities of buying a puppy exposed

Chardonnay, a cavalier King Charles spaniel cross, was diagnosed with pneumonia and, despite constant care, sadly died two weeks later. Frank, a mastiff, had parvo virus, but was fortunately saved by vets. Following the launch of our campaign, BBC One’s Rogue Traders also went undercover with RSPCA officers to reveal the shocking truth behind this lucrative market. Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally COUNCIL’S FREE ROLL STARK FIRE Dates for OF INSULATION GOES SERVICE WARNING FURTHER your Diary South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue has launched a campaign aimed at reducing the number smoking related incidents it attends, with smoking still the biggest cause of deaths in accidental house fires across the county. This is after two South Yorkshire residents recently cheated death in separate smoking related house fires. Steve Makepeace, Head of Community Safety at South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, said: “These two incidents, each within a few hours of each other, again highlight the dangers of smoking. A house has been devastated by fire and a man has been taken to hospital. Fortunately, the residents involved in these two incidents escaped with their lives. But on any day the outcomes could have been far more serious. “The message to smokers could not be clearer. Never smoke in bed, never leave a lit cigarette unattended, always ensure that cigarettes are put out properly and keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.” Smokers can help to keep the risk of fire low, by following some basic fire safety advice:

A scheme which is bringing cheaper fuel bills to thousands of Sheffield residents is setting the standard nationally. The City Council’s innovative Free Insulation Scheme is being promoted by the Energy Saving Trust, the UK’s independent national body focused on energy efficiency and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. So far over 11,000 households have signed up to free loft and cavity wall insulation provided by the Council, which is working in partnership with Eaga Insulation. Now homeowners and private tenants in Darnall can take advantage of the scheme as it rolls into their area Richard Webb, Executive Director of Communities at Sheffield City Council, said: “Households which have already been insulated for free have reported savings on their fuel bills of up to 21 per cent over the winter. “As well as Darnall our Energy Advisors are still working in Hillsborough, Manor Castle, Arbourthorne and Walkley wards, so if you’ve not heard from us please give us a call to make sure you don’t miss out. This scheme is free to all private households, regardless of income.” Although the scheme is being rolled out area by area, priority customers - defined as aged 70 or over or on qualifying benefits - can sign up at any time no matter where they live in the city. To find out more about the scheme, and to see if you are eligible, please call our free phone number 0800 915 9096 or see our dedicated web pages at www. sheffield.gov.uk/freeinsulation

FAMILY CHILD CONTACT Solicitor Emily Abbey of Norrie Waite & Slater answers questions on child contact How are contact arrangements with children decided after a separation? The law in relation to children is based on what is in their best interests. The law generally accepts that it is in the interests of children to have regular contact with both parents, provided the children are safe and are not at risk. In Association with

As this is going to be the first of many columns I write for the Mercury, I thought I’d better say hello and tell you a bit about me and my fishing. My name is Clint Walker, I’m 40 years old, married to the lovely Dawn and have 4 step children aged 11-26. I have a full time job but enjoy the opportunity to contribute to several publications and angling websites in my spare time. I class myself as a general coarse angler, I’m not really bothered what I catch as long as it has a mouth at one end, a tail at the other, doesn’t have feathers and can’t fly!! I have done a little bit of match fishing in the past, mainly as a member of the Staffordshire Fire Service team and was part of the successful squad which took the UK championship in 2008. This year I have joined the impressive Lymm Angling Club and have a place on a private syndicate which will be developed and stocked almost from scratch so I will be learning new skills along

the way as we improve and maintain the venue. I also write a North West report for a national weekly carp magazine, have featured in Angling Times recently and been published in other ‘hard copy’ magazines. As I’ve previously mentioned, I regularly write for various websites, and, if you are a ‘Northern Monkey’, we may have already met! Some of my fishing is backed by companies such as ACE, Screamer Baits and SAE bait developments so you may see hot news about great new items, ideas and releases from top quality suppliers and manufacturers. From a personal perspective, my focus over the last season or two has been to improve my own best specimen weights; in 2009, my target was a 6lb chub which was accomplished from the River Dove at a smashing 6lb 6ozs. Prior to that, I spent many hours tracking down double figure day ticket bream resulting in a 13lb 3ozs slab from Staffordshire venue Baden Hall. This year I’m after a big tench. The wa-

ter I’m currently fishing just south of Manchester, has produced fish to over 11lbs, and this week I opened my account with a ‘doctor fish’ of 5lbs 14ozs, taken on a Screamer Baits white chocolate pop up presented over a PVA bag. Did you know that tench slime was once supposed to have medicinal qualities and was rubbed into wounds in an attempt to get them to heal or massaged into skin to cure ailments... hence the term ‘doctor fish’. If I’m honest, it’s not something I would fancy.....! I’ve been asked by the editor to provide a piece each week that will follow angling in the Mercury circulation area. It will be a mix of hints, tips, match results, catch reports, news and reviews and hopefully you will be a regular reader and maybe even be featured with your fish of a lifetime..... Tight lines Clint

ICE HOCKEY - STEELERS NEWS Words & Pics by Sarah Youle

DOWD RETURNS FOR 2010-11 Sheffield Steelers fans were treated to some good news this weekend, as the club broke the news that forward Robert Dowd is to return to Sheffield for the 2010-11 season. Dowd, who is currently on international duty in Slovenia with Team GB and scored a goal during their game vs Croatia on Saturday, returns for his fourth season with the Steelers after scoring 12 goals and 24 assists in the 2009-10 season last year. Steelers’ Head Coach Dave Matsos secured another prized signature last week, that of Jerramie Domish, who spent last season with the Newcastle Vipers, his first in the Elite League. Hunted by many Elite League clubs after the close of the season, Domish signed on the dotted line for the Steelers after being impressed with the club’s vision for next season. A former team-mate of returning Steeler Steve Munn, Domish scored 28 points last season and came highly recommended both by Munn and his ex-coach at Newcastle, Rob Wilson. Following the news that Steelers’ Assistant Coach Doug Sheppard had been released by the club, it was announced that returning player Ashley Tait would be filling the role of Matsos’ second-in-command. “When we first spoke with Ash he confirmed that he would like and enjoy a bigger role at the club and the position of player assistant

coach excited him. Back then a decision hadn’t been taken on Doug Sheppard’s future and there was a thought process of them both holding that position. However with Shepp now moving on I can confirm that Ashley will be my sole player assistant next season. Ash brings many qualities, his intensity and desire is without question, he makes those around him better and that kind of leadership is priceless.” David Matsos Steelers’ Head Coach

League’s play-offs Ashley Tait joined GB in Slovenia. Goals from Jonathan Phillips, Ben O’Connor, Greg Chambers and Robert Dowd sealed the 4-1 victory, and it was the Steelers’ contingent finding the back of the net again on Sunday as Jason Hewitt scored the game-winning goal in their 2-1 victory over Korea, after Phil Hill put the British boys ahead in the second period.

GOLF TOURS

Team GB’s trip to Slovenia was hampered, as thousands of other international journeys were, by the closing of airspace due to volcanic ash. Rather than flying out of the UK and into Slovenia, the players faced a 26-hour coach journey. Far from using their travel inconveniences as an excuse despite only arriving at the rink two hours before the game began, GB hammered their first opponents, Croatia, 4-1 in their first game of the tournament. Following his team’s exit from the Italian

Punchestown Festival

Last week I gave some advance selections for the Punchestown Festival. However, since then there have been changes in running plans so those choices are no longer relevant – one of the pitfalls of doing advance selections I’m afraid! With some trepidation (because of the huge fields still entered at this stage) I have made tentative choices for most of the races on each of the four days. You will need to check each day for nonrunners but, if they run, I reckon that all have realistic chances of running well and troubling the judge and that the prices on offer should be reasonable. MILLERS COME CLOSE BUT ARE HELD Rotherham United saw two efforts cleared off the line, as they were held 0-0 by a resilient Cheltenham side at Don Valley Stadium. Pablo Mills and Nick Fenton were both denied by excellent clearances, but the despite not being able to break down the Robins, the Millers moved a point closer to securing a guaranteed play-off place. Ronnie Moore was forced into one change, with Mark Lynch replacing the suspended Danny Harrison. Mills started the game in midfield, and created the first chance on three minutes; his ball over the top found Adam Le Fondre, who couldn’t get the ball under the control in the area, allowing Shane Duff to make the tackle. Kevin Ellison and Marcus Marshall combined on the right, before Ellison cut inside, but his shot was comfortable for Scott Brown in the Robins’ goal. The visitors had two attempts from set-pieces, but Justin Richards blazed the first over the bar, and headed into the side netting four minutes later. Marshall went close from the Millers first corner of the game, and when Rotherham found themselves in a two on one situation on the counter attack shortly after, Nicky Law was controversially flagged offside. Just minutes later, two contenders for comedy moment of the season came during the same passage of play. Brown misjudged a back-pass from Duff, allowing Milers top scorer Adam Le Fondre to capitalise, and as he squared for Ellison, the winger slipped from 12 yards out. The best chance of the half fell on the half hour. Law burst into the area from the right hand side and squared for Le Fondre, whose side footed effort was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Mills’ speculative effort from 35 yards wasn’t likely to trouble the Robins’ goal. Marshall

If so take the hint that the selected race is the trainer’s preferred engagement for the horse. Remember to keep stakes light as these races are ultracompetitive and horses have often been laid out for this meeting all year. The 2,000 Guineas trials produced a convincing win for Elusive Pimpernel (tipped here) and a good performance from Dick FOOTBALL - MILLERS NEWS forced a save from Brown moments later, as the Millers pressed for an opener. The last chance of the half came from Ellison, who fired wide from the edge of the area following some good work on the left by Marshall. The second half began much the same as the first, and Ellison almost capped a fine Millers move with a rasping half volley from the edge of the area. Law picked up the ball in his own half, before finding Josh Walker in the centre circle. His cross-field ball was headed down by Ellison to Le Fondre who returned the favour, but the winger’s effort was just over Brown’s crossbar. Cheltenham’s first chance of the half came from a free-kick on the edge of the area, but Michael Pook fired over the bar. Mills came closest to opening the scoring with just under half an hour remaining. After peeling off his defender at the back post from Law’s corner, his shot was blocked on the line by Cheltenham forward Justin Richards. Ellison, now operating up front was found with a clever pass by Mills from midfield, and his shot on the turn was deflected just over for a corner. With their first meaningful attack of the half, Cheltenham almost took the lead. Josh Low got the better of substitute Jamie Green on the right-hand side, and when the ball found Medy Elito in the area, his side-footed shot was cleared off the line by Ian Sharps. At the other end Le Fondre glanced wide a header from Abdulai Bell-Baggie’s cross. Five minutes were indicated by the fourth official, and Millers hearts were in their mouths as Julian Alsop met Matt Thornhill’s cross, but his header was narrowly over the bar. Rotherham were awarded a free-kick with seconds remaining, and when the ball fell to Craig McAllister 15 yards out, his curling shot was tipped just wide by Brown. The resulting corner saw Fenton have a header cleared off the line, with the last action of the game.

Turpin to beat Canford Cliffs. I still do not think that either should be able to beat St Nicholas Abbey if he lines up for the race but there is no value now in backing him before the day. He has already beaten Elusive Pimpernel fair and square in the Racing Post Trophy and, providing he has trained on, should be very hard to beat. In the Jockey Club Cup on the same day Spanish Moon should take all the beating. At this stage the 1,000 Guineas looks much too hard to call. There appear to be several with leading chances but probably no outstanding candidate. Music Show looked to have trained on well when winning the Nell Gwynn, Revered has to have a decent shout and Termagant has some decent form in the book. If pressed for a selection I would have to go for Termagant but not with a great deal of confidence as I could probably also make a decent case for at least half a dozen others. ISSUE 845

RONNIE HAPPY WITH MILLERS EFFORT Ronnie Moore was delighted with his side’s effort and commitment but was left frustrated after the Millers failed to break down a resilient Cheltenham, after a 0-0 draw at Don Valley. The Millers had several chances and the bulk of possession but couldn’t find a way through a stubborn Robins defence. “We huffed and we puffed but we couldn’t blow the house down,” said Ronnie after the game. “Lidds was doing the counting for us and I think we had 12 shots in the opening 20 minutes. I cannot fault the players effort and commitment, we just needed a break or some luck in front of goal. At the end of the day we deserved it but we didn’t win the game.” The result almost ends the Millers hunt for automatic promotion after Bournemouth extended their lead in third place to eight points after a 2-0 win over Darlington. “It is frustrating that Bournemouth have won,” added Ronnie. “We wanted to keep hold of their shirt tails but we have three games to go and we are right in there with a shout. Today we just weren’t ruthless enough in the final third and that was the reason we didn’t win.”

goals either side of half time from Darren Potter and Lee Williamson ensured a stalemate at Hillsborough. Potter’s perfectly timed volley put the Owls in front but United drew level with a crosscum-shot from Williamson that gave Kevin Blackwell’s side a share of the spoils. United asked most of the questions in the typically frenetic early stages, forcing a string of corners that put the Owls on the backfoot. And the Blades almost went into the lead on eight minutes when Darius Henderson nodded a corner across goal and the ball struck Darren Purse before coming back into play off the post. But Wednesday rode the storm and tested the water at the other end with a Luke Varney daisycutter that was comfortably saved by Steve Simonsen. There was little then to choose between the sides as the first half unfolded. Chances were at a premium, with most of the possession staying in and around the engine room. The Owls forced their first corner of the game on the half-hour mark but failed to profit from a resolute Blades backline. Minutes later, though, the visitors again came close to taking the lead. Henderson got a vital flick on a long punt upfield from the back, sending Richard Cresswell clear on goal, but the former Wednesday striker scuffed his shot wide with just Lee Grant to beat. Wednesday responded with Tommy Spurr sending a header just over the bar from Potter’s free kick before the Owls drew first blood three minutes before half time. Varney cut inside from the left and floated a teasing cross into the box that Potter met sweetly on the volley to fire past Simonsen and hand the hosts a crucial advantage. The onus was on the Blades to

low effort on 58 minutes that Grant did well to smother. But the Owls keeper was powerless right on the hour as Williamson’s free kick from the left eluded the backline and went in off the far post to haul the visitors back into the game. Wednesday had to pick up the baton once more and Jermaine Johnson lobbed a snapshot over the bar before Varney broke free into the box but was thwarted by a last-ditch tackle from Blades skipper Chris Morgan. United countered with substitute Henri Camara fizzing a low ball across the danger zone but fortunately for the Owls, there was no Blades player attacking at the far post to apply the finishing touch. Grant saved well from Camara and Darren Purse foiled the same player with a well-timed challenge from behind as United looked the more likely in the closing stages. Wednesday still had something in the tank as Johnson forced Simonsen into a smart near post save but that was as good as it got for Alan Irvine’s side before the end of a fractious derby contest, leaving the Owls facing a nervy last two games of the season against Cardiff and relegation rivals Crystal Palace. ager Alan Irvine, was left disappointed by a derby draw on Sunday, after Lee Williamson’s freak free kick equalised Darren Potter’s volleyed opener. The 1-1 draw, was certainly less than Irvine wanted from the encounter with Sheffield United but it leaves with destiny in their own hands with just two games to go in the Championship. “It was a game we could have won,” the Scot insisted. “I thought once we got ahead I was quite confident we would go on and win the game. I knew that Sheffield United would be a threat at some point during the game - they started well, mainly because we gave away a free kick early on and that led to a couple of corners. Once we dealt with that I felt that we got more and more into the game and I felt it was a fantastic goal that we scored. “In the second half we started similarly to the way we did in the first half; we gave away some needless free-kicks and one of them led to the goal, which I felt was the way they were going to score against us because they didn’t look likely to score against us in open play.” The Owls boss was left ruing two good opportunities late in the game which could have secure three points for the home side, but is in positive frame of mind ahead of next week’s trip to Cardiff City. “We had two good opportunities at the end; one when Luke Varney got away on the right hand-side and didn’t pick anybody out and then Jermaine Johnson’s chance right at the very end which no doubt would have won the game at that point,” Irvine said. “It’s still to a large extent in our own hands. If we can match or better Crystal Palace’s result next week then it goes to the last game and unfortunately that was one of the things I predicted when I first got the job. If we can be that bit more clinical up front and stop the goals we have been conceding through bad luck then we will have a chance.” And the Wednesday chief admitted that he intended to attack the Blades from the off with four out-and-out forwards in his starting eleven; Leon Clarke, Marcus Tudgay, Luke Varney and Jermaine Johnson. “I couldn’t have been much more attacking I don’t think; unless I went for the old ‘W/M’ formation but it was like 4-2-4 so I did go for it. I wanted to win the game, I was desperate to win the game, I went with a team that I thought could win the game and they nearly did,” Irvine said.

Sheffield Wednesday captain Darren Purse will be flying across the pitch at Hillsborough after pledging his support for The Children’s Hospital Charity’s zip slide challenge. Darren, along with Owls manager Alan Irvine and chairman Lee Strafford, will be shooting from the back of the Kop and across the pitch to the Leppings Lane end, as participants in the zip slide on Sunday 25 April. Darren said: “As an ambassador for The Children’s Hospital and its charity I am always keen to support the excellent work that takes place there. Over the last year I have visited the hospital many times and I am always touched by the bravery of the young patients and their positivity, despite the difficulties they are facing. “When I heard about the zip slide I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to help raise money for the hospital and show my support for the staff and parents of children at the hospital who are taking part.” Simon Athey, Senior Fundraiser at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We are delighted that Darren has signed up for our zip slide challenge.” “In his role as ambassador for the hospital and the charity Darren has become a regular visitor on the hospital wards and is always asking about what else he can do to help us. He jumped at the chance to do the zip slide and I’m certain his presence on the day will give hospital staff and fundraisers taking part a real boost.” The zip slide challenge will take place between 9.00am and 4.30pm on Sunday 25 April 2010 and will give participants the chance to zip slide from the back of the Kop and across the pitch to the Leppings Lane end. Those wishing to join Darren for the challenge can register online at www.tchcharity.org.ukor call the charity office on 0114 2717203. A £25 registration fee reserves your place and then the charity asks that each person taking part raise a minimum of £75 in sponsorship. TERRACE

Written by Bunsen Bob It was like a funeral, great to see so many people there that you haven’t seen for a while but you just wish it was under better circumstances. The atmosphere, however, was far from funeral-like despite the reluctance of the away end to join in for the first hour. After Potter’s clinical opener the Kop was very literally bouncing – quite incredible and good testimony to our concrete suppliers of yesteryear. A nervous and relatively sombre second half understandably followed but the occasion still portrayed how formidable these occasions can be. Nothing, and I mean nothing, makes you feel the way a Sheffield derby does pre, during and post game. For the most part, the level of anxiety is that high it becomes hard to enjoy at times as you wait for that moment of unmitigated joy or indeed the chin slumping feeling of despair. Despite United’s goal being as lucky as Chris Morgan is despicable, the result was a fair one as we head to Wales looking for something or in fact anything that will make the final game of the year a meaningful one. Cardiff City doesn’t particularly daunt me as a footballing force to be reckoned with at this moment in time but the fixture is bigger than Neil Kinnock’s bald patch. Atmospherically it will be a doddle to cope with compared to the United game. We are, believe it or not, not that easy to beat over the last couple of games but we really do need a small dose of composure, class, quality or anything that doesn’t result in a shank or me shouting something that rhymes with it.

WILLIAMSON SQUARE THINGS UP AT OWLS Lee Williamson’s impressive free-kick earned United a deserved draw in the 125th Steel City derby and kept Wednesday in the relegation mire. The Blades were the better side for the majority of the encounter but the home side grabbed the lead with United down to ten men due to Richard Cresswell’s injury. Midfielder Williamson gained parity on the hour to help United back up to 10th position and leave Wednesday in the bottom three. The Blades sold out their allocation of 5,500 tickets to swell the Hillsborough crowd to bigger than usual. Both managers made one change for the second derby of the campaign - Blackwell used Williamson wide on the right instead of Little and Irvine included Clarke at the expense of Soares. There were a couple of surprises on the Blades bench where strikers Camara and Evans were named after injury problems. Wearing the Sheffield Children’s Hospital logo proudly on the front of the jerseys, thanks to the co-operation of the Malta Tourism Authority, United turned Wednesday around to kick towards their own Kop in the first half. The Blades fans in the Leppings Lane end were vociferous, making more noise, on occasions, than the other three Hillsborough stands put together. Purse was lucky not to pick up the game’s first booking. He was possibly helped by the

fact that just 75 seconds had elapsed when he lunged in at Quinn. From the free-kick, Henderson got his head to the ball but Spurr conceded a corner. United won a series of corners in the opening minutes and from one, on eight minutes, Henderson’s free header struck Purse, cannoned against Grant’s post and away to safety, fortunately for the home side. In a nervous start, neither team could categorically claim to be on top and chances were limited. Wednesday had to wait until 16 minutes before registering their first attempt on goal and although Varney’s shot went through Morgan’s legs, Simonsen comfortably saved. Just before the half hour, Simonsen’s long clearance was flicked on by Henderson and Cresswell was in the clear but with Beevers making ground, the striker’s shot, from a difficult position, was across goal and wide. Referee Foy’s first major involvement in the match was on 35 minutes and he appeared to get the decision wrong. Cresswell was adjudged to have fouled Johnson, but it was the United man that left the field with blood pouring from his face, caught by the Wednesday winger’s elbow. It was Johnson - in the corresponding fixture last season - who did damage to Naughton. Cresswell needed to leave the field for a full six minutes and with United down to ten men, Wednesday created three chances... and took the lead. Spurr’s free header from Potter’s cross was over and then Connolly was forced to clear when Simonsen dropped Johnson’s cross but the home

side used their advantage on 41 minutes. From Varney’s cross, midfielder POTTER arrived late in the box and beat Simonsen with a well-placed side-foot volley. Cresswell, complete with head bandage, returned just in time for the restart. Five minutes of injury time was added at the end of the half, a Beevers flick header was wide from Johnson’s cross, whilst the Blades were on the attack in a promising position when the half-time whistle blew. A slow start to the second period prompted Blackwell into action, sending on Camara just eight minutes in. Harper was replaced with Cresswell and Quinn moving to fresh positions, enabling the Senegalese striker to go up front with Henderson. Taylor, O’Connor, Quinn and Nolan were all booked in quick succession with the game becoming fractious but it played into United’s hands. Nolan’s yellow card was for a foul on Quinn and the Blades levelled from the free-kick. On the hour, WILLIAMSON, from wide on the left, curled in a free-kick which looked over-hit but the ball struck Grant’s back post and dropped into the net at the Kop end. Moments earlier, Quinn’s fine volley was saved by Grant. Before the game could recommence after the goal, Blackwell was forced to withdraw the injured Taylor with Bartley, forcing another reshuffle, this time Nosworthy shifting to left-back. Most of Wednesday’s attacking intent came from the long throws of Spurr, although a hopeful ball forward put Varney in the clear and he was just about to pull the trigger when he was stopped by a

last-ditch tackle from Morgan. Camara and Cresswell delivered crosses that flew across goal, both the result of good work by Quinn, and Henderson headed Nosworthy’s delivery into the arms of Grant. On 78 minutes Camara forced another save out of Grant, slamming the rebound into the side-netting, whilst Little was the last of Blackwell’s changes, taking over from the struggling Williamson. Nerves were evident in the final ten minutes. Connolly failed to make sufficient contact to Little’s free-kick and at the other end Johnson’s shot was pushed away at his near post by Simonsen. Varney’s shot saved by Simonsen on 89 minutes, whilst an additional four was signalled soon after with Varney again prominent. The final chance fell to Johnson but he missed a sitter. Wednesday: Grant, Spurr, Purse, Tudgay, Potter, Beevers, O’Connor, Clarke (Soares 79), Varney, Johnson, Nolan. Unused: Hinds, Jeffers, Esajas, Simek, O’Donnell, Gray. Blades: Simonsen, Montgomery, Morgan, Nosworthy, Henderson, Williamson (Little 79), Harper (Camara 53), Taylor (Bartley 61), Cresswell, Quinn, Connolly. Unused: Evans, Yeates, Bennett, Seip.

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

Just when the Blades’ season was coming to a pointless end, the fixture list throws up a tie that just about keeps things tasty for another week. Our home win against Coventry ten days ago, played out by two teams going nowhere, made it quite clear that everyone is just about ready for this season’s end and the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa. However across the city our blue and white neighbours still have a job on their hands, and we were invited on Sunday to either assist or prevent their progress. As it turns out we did more damage than good for their chances of staving off relegation. After watching my fair share of Sheffield derby’s from Hillsborough’s infamous Leppings Lane end, I am completely aware of

LOCAL SPORT NEWS

Gaffer’s SHEFFIELD reaction UNITED Despite the Blades hitting back for a draw at Hillsborough and remaining unbeaten in both cross city games this season Kevin Blackwell was left ultimately disappointed with the return. And he was frustrated about the incident that led to Richard Cresswell being off the pitch having six stitches in a head wound during the period in which the Owls took the lead: “I thought that overall we were comfortable, controlled large parts of the game and that if we had been a bit more clinical in the final third we would have won. “But Paul Connolly had a great heading opportunity, Quinny might have scored and Grant made a couple of decent saves. “Wednesday were desperate to win and they only had long throws and set-pieces in the end. “We were down to ten men when they scored and we are not happy with what happened to ‘Cressy’ and we will look at it on the DVD. It was a poor decision. “The blow by Johnson almost knocked him out and caused a bad cut which was very jagged and difficult to stitch which is why it took so long to get him back on. “We showed loads of spirit to come back from that and all the lads, especially those on loan and nearing the end of their contracts who showed that they have passion for this club, even though their jobs might soon be on the line - nobody shirked a tackle.” Lee Williamson’s equaliser which found the far corner of the net after deceiving everyone from when it was swung in from the left, was revealed as part of the planning: “I am not saying that it was meant as a shot but we encourage freekicks from there to be delivered on target because if nobody gets a touch then it goes in the net.”

how giddy the Owl’s faithful can get at the prospect of a corner, never mind an actual goal. So when they took the lead through a slick finish by Darren Potter in the first half, I feared the worst, and began to tell myself that this season would be remembered as the one where Sheffield United could really not get anything right. The consolation however was that they were really poor, in fact as poor as I have ever seen them since their relegation to English football’s second tier ten years ago. Their fans seemed understandably nervous in the second half as we pretty much controlled the pace and tempo, with Stephen Quinn having a colossal influence on the game. The goal we rightly deserved came from Lee Williamson’s looping free kick that deceived everyone to nestle in at the far post. What I would take from the game is that we are an average side, and the Owls are a poor side, which is made clear by our respective league positions. So all that’s left for us Blades this season is to see if our neighbours make it the three P’s for relegation: the Posh, the Pilgrims and the P… I’ll leave it at that!
