UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD AND SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL LAUNCH 2ND MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Cathedral will host a diverse and vibrant programme of events in June exploring music, film, literature, contemporary art, local history, current trends, world cultures and much more. The Summer Music and Arts Festival which will run between 3 – 12 June 2010, will take place at Sheffield Cathedral and builds upon the success of last year’s inaugural festival, which has seen both institutions contribute more to the cultural life of the city centre, making the festival an integral part of the city centre calendar. The Festival opens on Thursday 03 June with a trip down memory lane in The Reel Monty and a Shopaholics Guide to 1970s. Comprising of two short films and a talk, this event documents

Sheffield in its `boom and bust´ era of the 1970s, in a time when Sheffield was boasted as the Shopping Capital of the North, with Christmas Illuminations to rival Blackpool. On Friday 04 June, the wise words of local legend, poet Ian McMillan, will be interspersed with a set of swinging jazz standards by the Impressions Jazz Quintet in an evening of Poetry and Jazz. Ian McMillan has been a poet, broadcaster, commentator and programme-maker for over 20 years, often appearing on television and radio and contributing to national media. On Saturday 05 June, world music is represented with the Krar Collective presenting a stunning programme of music and dance from different parts of Ethiopia. Full of the worldly magic of Ethiopian modes and hypnotic rhythms, the

dancers re-enact scenes of village life in colourful traditional dress and with jaw-droppingly energetic folk dances unique to Ethiopia. Exploring current trends are two literature components, the first on Monday 07 June, Sheffield’s Lost Symbols, looks at the 2009 novel by American writer Dan Brown “The Lost Symbol” in an illustrated lecture by the Very Reverend Peter Bradley, and Freemasonry expert Dr Andreas Onnerfors . The talk looks into why Dan Brown´s work is so intriguing, if the rituals and imagery described is fact or fiction, followed by a tour of the city centre, pointing out some of Sheffield’s own lost symbols. On Wednesday 07 June, the Twilight phenomenon is also featured in Twilight, Vampires and the Uncanny, exploring our current

obsession with vampires, the mythology and history behind their existence, the bizarre concept of a vegetarian vampire, in a must see for all who currently obsessed with the Cullens, and the vampire craze! An Electric Prom takes place on Tuesday 08 June, where local band Screaming Maldini follows in the footsteps of Robbie Williams, Dizzee Rascal, Doves, Dame Shirley Bassey and Smokey Robinson in a format that will see the group presenting orchestral and choral arrangements of their sensational songs, combined with some of the classics in a unique and rare programme where popular music of the 21st century meets the classical greats. Contemporary Art makes an appearance on Thursday 10 June in The Painter, the Frenchman

and the Organist. Mark Rowan-Hull is a highly successful abstract painter, whose large, vibrant, colourful canvasses are inspired by the colours he hears in music. He will paint to live organ music by the composer Maurice Durufle (played by Anthony Gowing, Organist of Sheffield Cathedral) in an event that explores interpretation, between the composer the organist and the painter. A sequel event to last year´s sell-out Nosferatu the Vampyre, two further cinematic horror masterpieces of the silent film genre with improvised organ accompaniment appear on Friday 11 June. In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde one man’s desire to split the contrasting side of human nature, has disastrous results, and in one of the most influential films of the silent era, the annual fair descends on a

sleepy town in Germany where the arrival of the mysterious hypnotist prompts a series of grisly murders, in The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Rounding off the 2010 festival, on Saturday 12 June the almighty sound of three cathedral choirs are met with leading composer Gabriel Jackson talking about his approach to composition for choirs, with musical contributions from the choirs of Sheffield, Blackburn and New York (USA) Cathedrals. Gabriel Jackson’s music has been performed and broadcast worldwide and has won multiple awards. His music is being recorded with increasing frequency and in January 2010 Gabriel Jackson began his prestigious appointment as Associate Composer to the BBC Singers. Stewart Campbell,

Festival Director and Concerts Manager for the University, said: “I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to continue the creative partnership between the two institutions. This year’s programme of events encompasses many different art forms, combined with several inspirational performers; the Festival will undoubtedly be hugely beneficial to the University, Cathedral and the City of Sheffield.” The Very Reverend Peter Bradley, Dean of Sheffield Cathedral said “This is the second year of the partnership between the Cathedral and the University, and the result is a stunning programme full of quality and variety. We are proud in this way to make our distinctive contribution to the cultural life of the City of Sheffield.”

ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW

SHAPPI KHORSANDI AND JOHN RICHARDSON AT THE BARNSLEY CIVIC by Andrew Platts Readers may be aware that the Barnsley Civic underwent extensive re-design and modernisation and it is now a first class modern venue with an intimate and comfortable auditorium, ideal for the comedy shows that are currently touring the country. I would recommend to our readers that they keep an eye on the Barnsley Civic advert as they bring a freshness and originality to the South Yorkshire entertainment scene. In Shappi Khorsandi’s shows, the personal is always political. The Anglo-Iranian comic (below) has always drawn her material from aspects of her own history, particularly her family’s flight to England after her father Hadi, a satirist, fell foul of the ayatollah, and this heritage still informs some of her comedy. But for much of the time she’s moved from the past into her own present, drawing on her recent divorce and rejoining the dating scene. “In my 20s it was easy - you could just get drunk and fall on someone,” she laments. “In your late 30s that’s very much frowned upon. Especially at playgroup.” Perhaps it’s down to the frankness of the new material, but Khorsandi seems to have gained a new confidence on stage. Greater exposure on TV has brought her new audiences over the past year, but she seems more relaxed, chatting easily with the audience. Without leaving the past altogether, she’s emerged as a sharp and engaging observer of contemporary life. The second half of the show featured John Richardson and from the off he had engaged the audience with his relaxed and personable style. The question Richardson is asking is does perfection exist? Does striving for perfection enrich or mar our existence? He has a deeply held belief that every mistake is equal whether it be dropping a

a touching truth and openness to spoon or something much worse this performance that is incredibly – and the only way to rectify it is moving. On his search for the ideto get so angry and enraged that you never make the same mistake al world, Richardson has achieved perfection with this show. again. Yet all this ire is wrapped in this likable, grinning, innocent looking man. I don’t know if you have ever seen jovial fury but it is a thing to behold. The topics at the eye of Richardson’s hissy hurricane are really very mundane. BT gets its moment in the storm, alongside the BNP, dating and tube strikes but every topic is approached from a distinct angle. It is not the usual woes that trouble Richardson, it is the minutia, the seemingly insignificant details that rile him and it makes for surprising, refreshing and unique comedy, who else has ever ranted about a big corporation trying to save them money? As he dissects his life, delving into the two sides of his personality – the cheery chappy he brings out in company and the darker side that hates the world because it is imperfect – we get a genuine glimpse of his inner workings and also a mirror held up to our own imperfections. This all may sound like heavy stuff but the gleeful way in which Richardson vents his spleen and the absolute lunacy of the objects at the root of his despair keep the laughs flowing, and I mean tears down the cheeks, aching sides, roaring belly laughs. Levity is also provided with a tale of ice skating that despite the fairly innocuous content, is so brilliantly descriptive and gloriously delivered that it leaves the entire audience rolling in their seats and New and Used snooker and pool clutching their tables supplied, recovered, ribs. COPLEY’S COLUMN With the advent of two very important occasions in my life, namely the world cup and the Ryder Cup, I have endeavoured to stress the importance of sport to Caron, my girlfriend, as it will inevitably occupy much of my time in the coming months. I have, however, not been helped in this regard by the match fixing allegations in snooker against former world champion John Higgins. Having explained that these are only allegations against Higgins, I was dealt a further body blow by revelations that two Essex cricketers have been arrested for spot fixing, whatever that may be. The cricketers in question are Pakistan leg spinner, Danish Kaneria and fast bowler Mervin Westfield. On top of that, the chairman of the football association, Lord Triesman, by a loose lipped indiscretion, has all but kissed goodbye any hopes we had of staging the 2018 world cup. His claim that Russia and Spain were planning to bribe referees in this year’s final is both preposterous and most certainly unwarranted. All this after the shaming of Tiger Woods makes my argument that sport is one of the most important things in life a little bit offside. However, like a knight on a white charger, Paul Collingwood and the rest of the England twenty 20 cricket team may have come to my rescue by winning the world cup at the expense of the old enemy

Australia. Well done lads and also a special mention to my cricket team, Yorkshire, although I live in Derbyshire, for a tremendous start to the season, with many of their batsmen in good nick. Friday night took me, the girls, and Gary Sinclair to the Forest Showbar, Where I was honour bound to honour my pledge of fifty pounds to Help for Heroes. What a fantastic night was had by all, with the vocal entertainment being provided by lovely pensioner, Margaret, Dave Henry, sadly now retired through illness, Jeff Daniels, Geoff Summers, B.J.White and of course the wonderful Gary Phillips, who all sang without a fee. Top of the bill was top local comic, Jimmy Carol, who was his usual quick witted funny self. I like Jimmy; both as a comic and a person, and I have to say he looked like a man smitten with his lovely girlfriend Juliette, who was absolutely delightful. A total of £1700 was raised on the night, of which £420 was kindly donated by Wadsley W.M.C. What a great effort from this fabulous pub, not forgetting the untiring work put in by pub regulars Norma and Val. There is a lot about the local entertainment circuit to be proud of. When will there be an end to the volcanic ash problem? I am over fifty and can never remember it happening before so why now? I feel so sorry for the thousands of holidaymakers worried whether

the air space will be open when they travel, not least of all me, as I am off for a well earned rest in July.I t will be just my luck to be stranded abroad for an extra couple of weeks, yummy yummy. The proposed investment in my beloved Owls has all but fallen through, doubtless as a result of relegation. American investment company, Club 9 Sports, are now proposing an initial payment of £1.6 million pounds in exchange for 40% stake in the club and majority control of the board. Furthermore they want to charge £420,000 per annum in management fees. This ridiculous proposal has quite rightly been turned down, and chairman, Lee Strafford has left so stand in Howard Wilkinson has the job of looking for alternative investment. Me thinks that a cap in hand contact with Denis Hobson Jnr. May well be the next step. Denis is a smashing lad, whose offer of help should have been accepted long ago, a situation that was pooh-poohed by then chairman Dave Allen, for what I suspect were personal reasons. Tony Baines, ex-landlord of the Greyhound, Dronfield, and the Shepley Spitfire lost his life this week as a result of a tragic accident. Tony was one of life’s gentlemen, who will be sadly missed. My sincere condolences go out to Carol and family.

LEGLESS! An Irishman’s been drinking at a pub all night. The bartender finally says that the bar is closing. So the Irishman stands up to leave and falls flat on his face. He tries to stand one more time, same result. He figures he’ll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up. Once outside he stands up and falls flat on his face. So he decides to crawl the 4 miles home and when he arrives at the door he stands up and falls flat on his face. He crawls through the door into his bedroom. When he reaches his bed he tries one more time to stand up. This time he manages to pull himself upright but he quickly falls right into bed and is sound asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. He awakens the next morning to his wife standing over him shouting at him. “So, you’ve been out drinking again!!” “What makes you say that?” He asks as he puts on an innocent look. “The pub called, you left your wheelchair there again.” THE UNLUCKY PIRATE A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said, “Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. What happened, you look terrible!” “What do you mean? I’m fine.” “What about that wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.” “Well,” said the pirate, “We were in a battle at sea and a cannon ball hit my leg but the Doc fixed me up, and I’m fine, really.” “Oh yeah? Well what about that hook? The last time I saw you, you had both hands.” “We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but the Doc fixed me up with the hook, and I feel great, really.” “Oh,” said the bartender, “what about that eye patch? The last time you were in here you had both eyes.” “One day when we were at sea some birds were flying over the ship. I looked up and one of them crapped in my eye.” “You’re kidding,” said the bartender, “you couldn’t have lost an eye just from some bird crap!” “Well, I really wasn’t used to the hook yet.”

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made standard ‘Mirror

Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the local authority get it all?”

Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future Care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a childs divorce, re-marrage or financial difficulties.

LIVE REVIEW - LA ROUX venue: O2 Academy date: Mon 3rd May Hypnotising the audience from the word go, La Roux injected electronic euphoria into the hearts of everyone who attended the Gold Tour Deluxe Gig at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on 3rd May. Opening with Tiger Lily, arguably the most underestimated track off her chart topping début album, La Roux perfectly demonstrated why she is regarded as one of the UK’s finest pop acts. Her vocals were surprisingly good; to say she is all about the performance would be ignoring the fact that she really does have a first class voice. However, the adrenaline fuelled strobe lighting and dry ice clouds made it perfectly clear that La Roux wanted her audience to not only listen to her music, but to feel it aswell. This, she pulled off with simple clarity. Although she looked like a female Elvis Presley performing on Top Of The Pops

LIVE REVIEW - WESTLIFE venue: Sheffield Arena date: Sun 9th May

After a two-year break from the road Westlife returned to Sheffield for the opening week of their latest national tour - Where We Are. The boys were definitely back in town and reminded us of that by slotting into the show their own rendition of the classic Thin Lizzy anthem where in parts Kian rocked out on electric guitar. To get the atmosphere flowing the boys set about performing well know tracks such as popular covers Home, Mandy and also Up town Girl. What set this night apart from most was when the band erupted into more current up tempo music, performing hits such as I’ve got a feeling by The Black eyed Peas, Halo by Beyonce and also Sex If On Fire by Kings of Leon. The boys treated us to a little acappella medley of My Love and also I’m Never Gonna Say Goodbye all of which got the crowd on their feet and dancing. On stage Westlife paid tribute to two of the bands late fathers who passed away last year with the song Shadows from their new album. The show came to an end with a massive explosion of pyrotechnic fireworks and confetti which rained down and covered the crowd - an amazing end to an amazing night.

in the early 1990’s, La Roux somehow made this look unusually cool; she really did rock the whole ‘gold jacket, black slacks’ look, something only an electro die-hard could pull off. Along with this, her ‘I-don’t-care-what-people-thinkabout-me’ stage presence keyed up the atmosphere; especially when the opening bars of I’m Not Your Toy were played, sending the audience into a spontaneous frenzy of erratic dance moves. Abandoning the regular scenario where the artist will perform tracks solely of their current album, La Roux surprised the crowd by whipping out an acoustic guitar to play her ‘favourite Rolling Stones song’ Under My Thumb. The contrast between the soft guitar riffs as oppose to the previous heavy electronic beats worked magically, portraying the stars less edgy, more vulnerable side. Having felt like we were being hypnotised by a red haired snake charmer, La Roux suddenly plunged us all back into reality however, when Colourless Colour was blared out onto the audience. After a

AMEN TO THAT!

Rock band The Kamen have just finished filming a video with Rolling Dice productions, the video for the single “ALIVE” is due to be released on 31st May via The But! Music Group/But! Records. It was filmed at the Corporation nightclub in Sheffield over two days. One day with the band and another session with two actors for the extra storyboard shots. The single will be followed by their debut album “DISINFORMATION” due for release in July. The band have a campaign idea to get the single into the top 100 or if they get enough people on board they may even crack the top 40. The bands aim, in order to get exposure for their completely self-financed debut album is to crack the top 100 singles chart. You may think this sounds ridiculous but believe it or not these days this is a lot easier than it sounds. Only around 1000 - 1500 copies need to be downloaded within a week in order for it to crack the top 100 and 3000+ to be in with a chance of the top 40. What each member of THE KAMEN is trying to do, is get friends/family/work colleagues etc to help them get into the charts. To make this happen “Alive” needs to be downloaded between MONDAY 7th JUNE and SATURDAY 12th JUNE. So scoot on over to the bands Myspace site and give them a helping hand, and look out for the band when they support Dan Reed at The Corporation, on Friday 4th June where they will also be promoting the release of “ALIVE” and the album “Disinformation” www.myspace.com/thekamenrock

speedy outfit change, into an even more bizarre military jacket, the crowd was once again busting some serious shapes to the chart topping tunes. Saving her most famous two songs to the latter part of the show, In For The Kill and Bullet Proof, La Roux sure knew how to build up an electric climax. Although signs of physical fatigue were starting to appear, her performance was carried through by the sheer excitement of the crowd, who, it appeared, were word perfect on both cracking tunes...impressive. However, it would be fair to question the choice of La Roux’s last song, Fascination, which although has catchy ‘Human League’ elements, isn’t one of her best. Having said this, the performance was so good, so polished; we were more than willing to forgive her for this. La Roux is unquestionably one of Britain’s finest live acts and with such a mind-blowing stage performance, its more than clear to see why.

THE EIGHTIES ARE BACK!

The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster Originally formed in 1999, the band comprised Guy McKnight (vocals), Andy Huxley (lead guitarist), Marc R. Norris (rhythm guitarist), Symren ‘Sym’ Gharial (bassist), and Tom Diamantopoulo (drummer), until May 2005, in which Andy Huxley “decided to leave due to a decrease in musical similarities” to form the death-jazz band Vile Imbeciles and was replaced by Rich Fownes from With Scissors. In their first few years as a band, they were known for their large black car with red and orange flames on each side. According to Guy McKnight on MTV Two’s Gonzo the car has now gone. The band are renowned for their intense live shows, where McKnight regularly leaves the stage during numbers to mingle with the crowd. They have released two full-length albums, Hörse

reviews by presley

The time is almost upon us for The South African World Cup and I for one can hardly wait. I’d be even more excited if Becks wasn’t injured though, it won’t quite be the same without him. But hopefully we can go further than the Quarter Finals this time. Football songs are usually extremely dodgy, there have only ever been a couple of decent ones…..….EVER! So to bring a quality album out isn’t going to be easy, is it? Well firstly, this album was first released in 2006 so its already done the rounds. Plus what you have on here isn’t quite what you’d expect. You see, I thought it’d be just the songs written especially for football occasions. But it is much more than that, its got all the songs you’re likely to hear on the terraces of most football matches, not just the ones you’d hear at England football matches. Album opener Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ is a case in point, you wont have heard this sung at many England World Cup campaigns. The same goes with Tina Turner’s ‘The Best’. Bell & Spurling’s ‘ Sven Sven Sven’ is one that

you won’t hear anymore at any English football match unless he gets a new job over here. I’m hoping he doesn’t, just for the simple fact that thankfully I won’t have to endure this awful tune ever again (cd player now programmed to skip at track 18). I mentioned earlier that there are a couple of decent football songs and obviously (thankfully) they’re both on here. ‘3 Lions’ and the best of them all New Order’s ‘World In Motion’. One hiccup is that the latter has had a 2010 makeover and now feature Dizzee Rascal……………..I know, I know, total sacrilege or what?? But with the songs ‘Eat My Goal’, ‘Jumparound’ and a rendition of ‘(Is This The Way to) The World Cup’ by Tony Christie you can almost forgive the makers of this cd…………….almost. The thing is when football and music collide you’re going to have casualties and Neil Morrisey & England’s Pride’s ‘England’s On The Way (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)’ is certainly one of them. If you can make it past this classic (!) then you’ll be rewarded with a bit of patriotism with ‘Jerusalem’ ‘The Dambuster’s March’ and finally ‘Land Of Hope And Glory’. A fantastic end to an album full of ups and downs, which sums watching England play football up very perfectly.

artist: Dizzee Rascal album: Dirty Disco release date: 24th May

artist: Alicia Keys album: Try Sleeping with... release date: 24th May

And talking of the cheeky rapper……………..here is his new (football free) single. As the title suggests, it is a nod towards the ‘70’s disco era. Musically its pretty cool, very retro (obviously) the backing vocals are fabulous. Dizzee’s rap is ok, nothing groundbreaking but apt for a track such as this. It’s very commercial but not in any naff way and if a rap can get you on your feet then this one certainly will. I actually don’t mind this tune at all.

Quality oozes from every pore of Alicia. From the quality of her songs, to the classiness of her performances. This new single is no exception. I wasn’t sure whether to review this and then I checked it out and I am so happy I did. It’s not what you’d expect. It’s extremely subtle in its delivery. The term ‘less is more’ is so apt. This is brilliantly simple, its basic drum machine and vocal endear it to you and has a big effect on the listener. This is brilliant, please check it out.

Of the Dög in 2002 and The Royal Society in October 2004 and the band have also released seven singles on various different formats, each release has had several b-sides included and so the band have a large amount of songs that cannot be found on their albums. The song “Mister Mental” was featured on the film, Shaun of the Dead, the movie also contained posters and other references to the band. In 2003 Guy McKnight, Tom Diamantopoulo and former member Andy Huxley all became Buddhists after giving up drugs. In an interview, former member Andy Huxley was questioned about his reasons for giving up drugs he said “Because it’s irresponsible, and you can’t get anything done, and it stifles your creativity, and there’s no benefit in it really, apart from its like going on vacation constantly,

I can’t write any songs when I’m on drugs, I need to be sober”. The bands third studio album, Blood And Fire, will feature heavily in the live shows and you can catch them in Sheffield with a gig at the Corp on the 22nd.

YOUR WEEKLY

HOROSCOPES by Deborah Turner-Broadhead Aries 20 March - 20 April Lots of fresh new energy is at your disposal this week as last Friday’s new moon gave you a new outlook and the determination to achieve great things. Uranus is also entering your sign and so anything is possible! Push forward fearlessly into new ground, and remember Aries, success comes from careful planning. Angel Message - Don’t stop believing! If you can dream it, you can achieve it! Taurus 21 April - 20 May Taurus, this week is very unpredictable as fate throws all sorts of situations your way. You will think fast and act even faster. Try not to feel burdened by the situation and instead concentrate on moving forward - make steady progress to achieve great results. Close relationships also need monitoring as an increased workload could cause an emotional situation to erupt. Remember these situations can be resolved. Angel Message - Trust your inner compass and you will arrive where you need to be. Gemini 21 May - 20 June Like a thundering chariot your life seems to be moving too fast, even for you. It really does seem like a case of ‘stop the world I want to get off!’ You must decide what it is that you do want as the mixed signals you send are causing you to get swept along in other peoples wishes. Financially start planning for your future and this involves seeking an adviser. Angel message - Peace comes from knowing when to say no. Cancer 21 June - 21 July Any decisions you have to make this week are difficult, especially if you feel undervalued and unsupported. Remember to have boundaries. Communicate your wishes clearly to avoid any awkward situations and to ensure that neither you or others get hurt. It really should be your time to shine so put your fears behind you and act with courage and conviction. Angel Message - Nature holds the key to your sanctuary and healing. Spend time outdoors especially near water. Leo 22 July - 22 August Wow, do try to stay focussed Leo as a major breakthrough is imminent. This really is a week of high activity and high impact. However, you must stay disciplined in order to achieve your goals. Romantically it is your time to be wined and dined as food and earthly indulgences make you feel truly blessed. Remember life is for living and in true Leo fashion you will live this life to the full. Angel Message - Respect other peoples’ energies and emotions so they may respect yours. Virgo 22 August - 21 September Positivity is the key word this week as a positive outlook will make a huge difference to your dreams and aspirations. It really is time to get that stagnant energy moving once again as you will find that those huge mountains you were trying to climb will dissolve into tiny molehills. Conquer your fears and commit to yourself as your dreams are limitless. Angel Message Trust your vision of the future and vow to obtain it .

Libra 20 September - 21 October Your dreams are there waiting so show your commitment. Please don’t let life get in the way and compromise your reward. The sun and Venus change signs on Friday which inaugurates action. For you this means working in a different way. Emotionally, try to be tolerant of self opinionated people. Do their opinions really matter to you anyway? Angel Message - You need nurturing and patience just like your dreams. Scorpio 22 October - 21 November What are your strengths and what are your weaknesses? This week will surely prove to be a revelation and a much needed life lesson as you find out that your weakness, once overcome, can become your greatest strength. You will have an increased awareness of what you need to do and say in order to proceed further with your goals. However, any tension in close relationships needs to be resolved or you may find yourself preoccupied with all kinds of emotional drama. Angel Message -Focus only on your main priorities to achieve clarity. Sagittarius 21 November - 21 December Emotions run high this week as you find yourself sailing in choppy waters. The key here is to endure these feelings of disorientation as a safe harbour is closer than you think. Many of the situations that you are now facing are not for you to try and control and you may well feel exhausted like you are swimming up stream. You must learn to release your fears and go with the flow. Just see where fate takes you! Angel Message - Heeling is needed so that you can achieve your dreams. Capricorn 21 December - 20 January Balance is needed this week as many commitments and obligations leave you feeling dishevelled. Watch out for any indulgent behaviour as it could leave you with a heavy financial burden. Your rewards will come to you if you work hard and lay the foundations well. Of course this will require patience! Angel Message - Release all your worries and tensions to be free. Aquarius 21 January - 19 February What are you waiting for Aquarius? It is time to kick up those heels and have fun. You are a social butterfly so don’t be around anyone who will undermine your confidence or try to manipulate your situation to benefit their own. You are going to meet someone soon who will give you an unusual offer. Please consider it even if it does mean a change to your old routine. Angel Message - Trust your intuition to transform your dreams into your reality. Pisces 19 February - 20 March Please try not to rush into anything this week even if opportunities present themselves, as a life review is in order. This means a change in your strategy. You must try to make decisions with your head not your heart as repeating patterns from the past could cause future disappointments and anxiety. This may seem challenging but it will be worth it in the long run. Angel Message - Resolve to change or heal anything in your life that is unbalanced.

PAUL WALKER’s CLUBSCENE

John’s story

Interesting story this week, I was having a couple of new tyres fitted when a man came over and asked whether I was the columnist for The Mercury newspaper. He introduced himself as John and explained that he was just starting out in the business. He was currently performing at nursing homes but he had got a wide variety of material and was hoping to move into pubs and clubs. John continued to tell me that he was struggling with how to link the songs in his act and was in a local pub observing how other performers did this, when he saw an agent. He approached the agent with his concerns. The agent responded by taking John’s card but said nothing. He made no attempt to answer John’s enquiry. As you can imagine. John was

CAMRA CLUB OF THE YEAR Clubs from Cheshire, East London and Surrey make top four! An historic hidden gem situated in a converted railway station room has today been crowned as the best Club in Britain by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. Previously a joint CAMRA National Club of the Year winner in 2000, the Rushden Historical Transport Society’s Social Club has taken the title outright in 2010 after a panel of judges were impressed by the Club’s outstanding commitment to quality real ale. The Club is a regular in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, with a choice of up to 7 real ales on at all times. Back in 1986, the Society transformed a disused Ladies Waiting Room into a Victorian-themed real ale bar. Having obtained Charitable Status only two years earlier, the Club was opened to raise funds for the renovation of the old Midland Railway Station of 1894 in which it is housed. The Club soon built up a reputation for the quality and choice of its beer range and in the present day remains a haven for real ale

Bourne out of personal tragedy and a traumatic period in her life. Bev Lister was determined to set up a charitable foundation which could offer financial and supportive help to parents who were so sadly experiencing the same hardships that Bev had endured, trying to cope and care for her terminally ill son. The show on Saturday, all be it a fund raiser, was also by way of a celebration and thank you to all the hard work supporters of this charity undertake during their busy year. Following the champagne reception where guests were entertained by the fabulous keyboard skills of Lewis Nitikman (piano player and fellow song writer with John Reilly). The call to dinner was at 7.45 where again guests were entertained by The June Fletcher Academy. Compere Mr. Gary Phillips introduced us all to the night in his

shocked at the agent’s lack of manners and asked me whether this was common behaviour amongst agents. I explained that it was not. Agents should help and advice people and to put doubt into the mind of someone who is just starting out in the business is certainly not acceptable, not to mention bad business practice. However, there are many good agents out there (like Cee Bee Variety Agency who were featured in the column a couple of weeks ago). If you are the agent concerned then I hope you feel extremely ashamed, and John, if you’re reading, keep performing and phone a reputable agent who will give you the advice that you need. If you have had a similar experience or would like advice on starting out in the entertainment world then drop me a line at The Mercury or email me at paulwalker@mercurynewspaper. co.uk

Out and about Remember last week when I talked about certain acts pulling in crowds, well, this week I witnessed a prime example. I called in at Wickersley Club where the tremendous Alexander’s Palace were performing (An act that I never get tired of seeing). The place was packed and it was a struggle to get to the bar but if you like rock music then it was certainly the place to be. Rock music doesn’t get much better than this band - five men playing live and delivering an extremely well rehearsed and polished show. They performed a range of songs from Journey to a ‘rocked up’ rendition of Westlife, with a fantastic response from the crowd. Talking to Alex and Dave (members of the band) after the show they both agreed that they had noticed a change in Club Land. They said that although they were still managing to pull in the crowds Club Land was definitely

year’s National finalists reinforces the fact there are still plenty of fantastic clubs in the UK where people can drink quality beer. The future viability of some clubs around the UK remains a concern for CAMRA’s Clubs Committee, but today it’s all about praising the success of the overall champion. ‘Rushden Historical Transport Society is revered for its quality in all areas, and is a worthy winner of this National accolade. Bearing in mind the station itself was once threatened with demolition, it’s great to see the Club has gone from strength to strength, as its historic decor and great commitment to quality real ale make it a truly unique place to try Britain’s national drink!’ Julian Tubbs, CAMRA’s Regional Director for the East Midlands, concluded by reiterating the importance of the Club to the local community. He said: - Appleton Thorn Village Hall, ‘The Club is a real attraction for Appleton Thorn, Cheshire both the discerning beer drinker - Leyton Orient Supporters Club, Leyton, Greater London and beer novice alike, but despite - United Services Club, Egham, its special appeal to railway enthusiasts, it’s a valued community Surrey outlet, where people of all ages John Holland, Chair of CAMRA’s and backgrounds can meet for a drink. The Club truly deserves the Clubs Committee, spoke of title as Best Club in Britain, and the high standard of this year’s I hope its success brings further entrants. He said: publicity to this historic site.’ ‘The faultless standard of this drinkers across the UK. Ruth Pendlington, Secretary of the Club’s Bar Committee, on hearing the results of the National competition, said: ‘We are delighted and honoured to receive this award. We know how tough the competition is out there, so to win this outright is a huge accolade. We would like to thank our Beer Manager Simon Bishop, our bar staff and the unpaid volunteers who help behind the bar and in the cellar, without whom the bar could not operate.’ In order to find the National Club of the Year for 2010, submissions were put forward by CAMRA’s 200-plus local branches across the UK, with the criteria based around the club’s commitment to real ale. This year, after some strong competition, the Rushden Historical Transport Society beat three other National finalists, which were-

unique and personally charming way. There seems no end to this man’s talent - no wonder he has so rightly won the accolade of Mr. All Round Entertainer. With dinner served and all feeling suitably stuffed, Gary took to the floor with a few songs again ably backed by The June Fletcher dances. A quick game of Heads and Tails as part of the fund raising efforts followed by a heart rendering and very moving video and talk by Jane Knight one of the parents Sincere Support had helped. This really put into perspective the desperate need for Sincere Support. 9.45pm and the stage was clear for the man who everyone is talking about at the moment Paul Pashley. First time I have had the pleasure of seeing this man in action and no wonder he is tipped to be a huge star very soon. Take That’s Gary Barlow along with Bryan Adams are already writing songs for him and a new EP is due out soon. The short space allocated to this review could in no way do this man justice, suffice to say a fabulous talent and one I urge everyone to see.

Next to the stage Sheffield’s finest The Acoustic Angels fronted by John Reilly. When you get to such a high calibre of musicianship and vocal ability as these guys posess you know that you’re in for a musical treat. The band cover all styles and genres in music. Fabulous to sing and dance along to. Dave Baldwin of Baldwin’s Omega simply described them as “The Greatest Party Band you could ever book” and you could not argue to the contrary they are fabulous. The Acoustic clan entertained us into the wee hours before finally finishing at 12.45am. Following a quick auction and raffle we were again treated to another set by Paul Pashley. My dancing legs finally gave way at 2.15 and with thanks to all for a superb night I finally made my way home. In this day and age of big business charities it is extremely heart warming to have supported a charity that stays true to its principles and the reasons for its foundation. Well done Bev and all who support such a wonderful charity.

not as busy as it use to be. I had a very different club experience on Sunday night. I called into Greasborough Club to the see singer Robin Gooda (an old friend of mine) perform to a crowd of 30 people. Now I know how demoralising it can be playing to a small crowd but Robin took it in his stride and like a true pro put everything into entertaining his audience. Now comes some constructive criticism, Robin is a fantastic multi instrumentalist, so why did he spend more time telling jokes than singing or playing? I know we all tell a few stories inbetween songs but personally I think Robin may have over done it. However, the crowd did seem to enjoy it. Robin finished with a great version of James Blunt’s ‘You’re Beautiful’.

EVENT REVIEW VIVA LA FRANCE NIGHT COPTHORNE HOTEL - BRAMALL LANE by David Hayes

The 4 Star Copthorne Hotel is another of Sheffield’s great and good in the ever emerging hotel restaurant world. The recently opened modern hotel adjacent to the SUFC stadium has given birth to The 18FIFTY5 Restaurant, an up market contemporary bistro, which is airy and spacious. It seems equally suited to couples or groups, as it’s lively without being overbearing. There’s a comfortable lounge bar area for the inevitable wait that comes with a Saturday evening table booking and it was so full of bright young things that it was hard to believe we were still in good old Sheffield... a more upbeat Manchester sprang to mind. We were cordially welcomed by the staff with the personal attention of the management eagerly visiting each table to assure us of the fabulous night ahead. Our wait for a table was brief and we were pleased to see that the suitably themed French menu offered a delightful choice, further complemented by a fairly substantial wine menu, ranging from the very reasonable for the average diner, to excellent but upmarket (with a price to match) for the connoisseur! Within minutes of being seated our starter of a classic Salade Nicoise comprising cherry tomatoes, cucumber, black olives, eggs and seared tuna laid out on a bed of green beans was before us. Delightfully presented and fresh tasting. The French themed entertainment started in earnest featuring three hugely talented singers presenting a musical show from the classical to the modern, but importantly all with a French style. With the wine now flowing and our starters eagerly enjoyed the main course of Coq au vin was presented. The chicken was plentiful and moist although thankfully not overly soaked in the red wine sauce. The first half of the musical show concluded to lively applause, and the waitresses served a very refreshing but incredibly strong Champagne sorbet. Judging by the sudden quietness of my guests as they tucked it away I

Dear Sir, In your Talkback column (Issue 847) you stated that “nowhere in any party’s manifsto is there any reference to the problems suffered by the pubs and clubs over the past few years”. In fact, the manifesto of the 4th largest party (by votes cast), the UK Independence Party contains the following : “Pubs & Smoking UKIP realises that the local pub is a unique part of British community life, but it is under serious threat from supermarket price undercutting, brewery company indifference and the smoking ban. UKIP supports designated smoking rooms in pubs, clubs and public buildings.” UKIP has also published a more detailed Policy Statement entitled “Pubs and Smoking”. This can be read and downloaded from that party’s website www.ukip.org/ content/ukip-policies/1531-pubsand-smoking Please tell your readers that it is only the three largest (oldest) parties that are ignoring this issue. guess all enjoyed it as much as me. After a brief interlude to allow for the very funny and clever table magician to present a ten minute show the 2nd half of the musical cabaret started in time to greet the desert of Caramelized apple tart which my partner assured me was delicious. I however, ever mindful of my ever expanding waistline, opted for the cheese and biscuits offer, which would have been better described as a cheese platter, as there was easily enough cheese and biscuits for two or three people. There was a nice selection of cheeses which complimented the second bottle of red wine. The music continued to delight with a superb presentation of songs from Les Miserables and Phantom of The Opera, building up to the Abba crescendo (which although not French certainly got all and sundry dancing and singing along). With fresh coffees, teas and some divine chocolate truffles to finish the meal off I can safely say we all had a lovely evening and one I would recommend to all. I shall certainly watch out for the further forthcoming themed events nights at the Copthorne, including an Independence Day Jazz Night on the 3rd. July and a Beat Music night on the 18th September - both presented with a 4 course meal and both at fantastic value for only £19.95 a head. Also I can highly recommended the 18FIFTY5 Sunday 2 course carvery lunch, at a very reasonable £9.95 for adults and £5.95 for children.

LIFE INTEREST WILLS Solicitor Katy Burgin of Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors answers questions on Wills

I am remarried after a divorce. How can I ensure that my children from my first marriage inherit their share of my estate, without penalising my current spouse?

their own children, thus depriving your children of any inheritance. With a ‘Life interest Will’ it is possible to avoid this situation. The family home is a perfect example. You may wish to leave this to your children eventually, but If you have remarried still enable your current following bereavement partner to live in it after or divorce, and have children from a previous you have died. It is possible to give your partner marriage, it is possible a life interest in the to ensure the financial security of your current property, which means that after you die they spouse whilst still procan live in the property tecting your children’s inheritance by making a until they die (or remarry if you wish), at which ‘life interest will’. You may wish to ensure point it passes to your beneficiaries. that your current partner is financially secure In this way you can should you die first, but protect both your partner and eventual you feel it is only right beneficiaries. that your children from your previous marriage What are should inherit your asmirror Wills? sets, particularly if the main asset is the family Mirror Wills is the term aphome which may have plied to almost been substantially paid identical Wills for during the previous made by a marriage. With a standard Will, if husband and you leave everything to wife. It relates to when both your new partner your parties have the assets would become same Will but theirs. When they die those assets would then in reverse, for example, they be passed to their benleave everyeficiaries, who may be

For couples it is not possible to have a joint Will. Each person must have their own Will, although the cost of making mirror Wills is usually less than the cost of making 2 Wills independently. For further advice call 0114 276 6166 or visit www.norriewaite.co.uk to find your local branch.

I went fishing yesterday; nothing unusual in that, I go once a week like many anglers, but I had an extremely interesting conversation with a chap I met on the bank about safety in angling. Are you one of those people who think “.... it will never happen to me”, or are you an angler that considers the dangers inherent when near water? What about the statistics? How many accidental drownings happen annually throughout the UK? The latest available figures show that almost 700 drownings occur each year, the majority of which happen between May and July as the weather warms up. This may point to the assumption that many of the deaths are youngsters, after all, we older (wiser?) anglers don’t go swimming about when we get bored do we? As a serving firefighter on a boat equipped station, I have been witness to many recoveries from water; note that I do not say ‘rescue’; once you are in the water and in difficulty, it’s very un5 Individual Lakes

likely you will get back out unless trained rescue is already on site. Many of these incidents have been angling related and of those that are, all have been under 18 years old. There are many hazards which may or may not be easily visible, and as water is a dynamic environment, they may change daily. What makes it so dangerous then? After all, it’s only water, we swim in it, drink it, bathe in it and use it every day for a variety of tasks, all without coming to harm. What looks like a cool, inviting pool could harbour many hazards including deep (or unexpectedly shallow) areas, freezing temperatures, diseases, undertow, currents, subsurface obstructions, and who knows what else. So, what can be done to reduce the tragic figures? It’s up to us as anglers to watch out for each other. A bit of basic first aid training goes an awfully long way as these kind of incidents often happen a long way from the nearest access and you could be the only help immediately available; a 20 Acres of Water 150 Pegs

mobile phone to summon help is an essential piece of angling equipment these days, but it’s useless if you are unsure of your exact location! Wear sensible footwear, (especially in winter), don’t go near overhanging or undercut banks as they may give way unexpectedly, fish with a friend, and be properly prepared for fishing at night, taking sufficient lighting and spare batteries! There is much we can do to help each other out and avoid another unnecessary drowning, I realise (as a father to 4 step kids) that a few younger anglers may consider that they don’t need advice as they already have a ‘know it all’ part of the brain, but a little bit of thought before you go may be the thing that makes a difference to us all. Trust me, it’s not pleasant recovering someone from the water, especially kids, and it’s even worse when it could have been avoided..... Tight lines Clint

ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle

Hewy’s Coming Home Sheffield Steelers’ Jason Hewitt will be returning to the club next season for his 6th year with the team. Hewitt, who also regularly ices for Team GB, scored a career-high 11 goals last season, and is the team’s best penalty killer. “I’m delighted to be returning,” said Hewitt “I love the Steelers, I love being a Steeler, I love everything about the history, the club, the Arena. This is where I want to be now and for the rest of my career. We have had so much success and good times here recently, then last year came along and brought us all down to earth with a bump. We have experienced winning and losing and I know which one I prefer.” - Jason Hewitt. Team GB coach Paul Thompson has given the Steelers’ latest signings his seal of approval, as coach Dave Matsos has recently secured the signatures of three GB internationals in Ashley Tait, Robert Dowd and now Jason Hewitt. “...Hewey is a man, on the ice and in the room, he doesn’t act it out, he genuinely cares. He knows his role as well, he is very good in his own end something that’s hard to teach.

I use him a lot as a penalty killer and I trust him when he is out there, he is in control.” - GB Head Coach Paul Thompson. Hewitt adds skill and experience to the Steelers’ Brit Pack, which in recent weeks has seen the loss of Ben Morgan, Robert Farmer, and last week, back-up netminder Dan Green, who has gone to “The Dark Side” and signed as the Nottingham Panthers secondstring netminder. SHEFFIELD EAGLES RUGBY LEAGUE sheffieldeagles.com

Sheffield Eagles 22 Batley Bulldogs 12 Eagles produced a great second half performance with Alex Rowe scoring two late tries to claim a dramatic win over Batley Bulldogs. Prop forward Rowe tries in the final five minutes to have the fans on their feet at Bramall Lane. It’s now two straight wins for the eagles with Toulouse Olympique next up at the Lane on Saturday 15 May (kick-off 3pm) Batley had the best of the first half and could have doubled their half-time 12-0 lead but the Eagles apart from a couple of lapses hung in. At halftime coach Mark Aston read the riot act and then with ten minutes to go in a master stroke sent back on Rowe - and it worked! The Eagles were stunned as Batley took an early lead with Gareth Moore seeing his chance from dummy half and cutting through the Eagles line from 20 metres for a try. The scrum-half added the goal. Paul Handforth and Moore were controlling the plays for Batley with the forwards blasting their way through the middle. Rowe came on for the Eagles and put in some big runs but the Bulldogs defence was in a mean mood. The Handforth and Moore combination almost sent in centre Danny Maun but the Eagles line defence held. At the other end the home side were taking a battering and the pressure told with prop Dave Tootill following up a kick to touchdown soon after he came off the bench. Moore added the goal. Tootill also got his second try but he was held up over the line. The Eagles were struggling to get out of their half and lacked the power and kicking game they had shown in the big win over Whitehaven. Half-time saw Batley go in with a 12-0 lead. The Eagles were a different team from the restart taking the game to Batley with some good passing moves.

A 60 metre break from Rowe set up the move that led to the Eagles first try. Rowe was held near the posts but the ball was put out wide and Tangi Ropati off-loaded to winger Ashley Thackeray who went in at the corner. Brendon Lindsay added the goal. Soon after Thackeray had to go off with a knee injury. Eagles narrowed the gap to two points following a break from his own half by Menzie Yere which led to Lindsay and the centre sending Mills in near the flag. Lindsay’s kick hit the upright. Moore looked to have got Batley’s third try with a break near the line but he was held up. Batley tested the Eagles with a series of high kicks but a couple of penalties relieved the pressure. Into the final five minutes and the next score was vital, that’s when Rowe exploded on the scene. The prop produced a perfectly timed run to blast over for a try near the posts. Ropati added the goal and the Eagles were ahead for the first time in the game. With two minutes left Rowe sealed the win with a burst that took him over under the posts and Ropati added the two points. Eagles: Misi Taulapapa, Ashley Thackeray, Tangi Ropati, Menzie Yere, Danny Mills; Brendon Lindsay, Aaron Groom; Ryan Hepworth, Craig Cook, Trevor Exton, Alex Szostak, Peter Green, Dane McDonald. Subs: Joe Hirst, Alex Rove, Matty Brooks, Ged Corcoran. Tries: Thackeray (44), Mills (49), Rowe (75, 78). WIN TICKETS TO THE CO-OPERATIVE CHAMPIONSHIP!

MONTH OF GLOOM

Want to guarantee your seat at the next Sheffield Eagles match? We’ve joined forces with The Co-operative, sponsors of The Co-operative Championships and official partner of the RFL to give you the chance to win four pairs of tickets to Sheffield Eagles verses Keighley Cougars on 27th May.

Let’s take a moment to recap. We were relegated on the last day of the season, a lacklustre investment approach was rebuffed, our chairman has resigned and Gail is still in prison. As far as months go, May has been a pretty bad one and we still have a few weeks for things to mutate and evolve into something worse. Crisis management is best achieved when the problem at hand is split into smaller issues that can be dealt with. So, here goes. The relegation hurt. In fact it hurt quite badly but it was deserved and it is what it is. A foolproof remedy is a quickfire promotion but we all know that is easier said than done. What I hope to be true is that Irvine has the guile and grit

A golf-trip-of-a-lifetime to the Bahamas awaits amateur Ross Dodge and his Bondhay PGA professional Justin Fores if they can come through the regional final of Europe’s biggest pro-am competition, the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-Am Championship supported by SkyCaddie. The tournament which draws in more than 50,000 competitors from across Great Britain and Ireland is now its 26th competitive year and will be sponsored by the UK’s award-winning long haul airline for the second successive year. Dodge took his first big step towards a luxury six-day all inclusive trip to the island of Grand Exuma between November 23-28, when he won his club qualifying competition with a nett score of 66. He and Fores now advance to Coxmoor Golf Club on Monday 7 June, one of 16 regional finals, where they will play one round of better-ball medal play. The winning professional in the regional final receives £500, and there are valuable prizes for the top amateurs. The winners at each regional final throughout Great Britain and Ireland will secure their place on board a Virgin Atlantic jet for the exotic trip and the chance to compete in the Grand Final held on the Greg Norman-designed course at Emerald Reef Golf Club, part of the Sandals Emerald Bay Resort, which boasts the only ‘all butler’ service in the Bahamas. The PGA National Pro-Am Championship has a prize fund of £30,000, with the winning professional at the Grand Final taking home a cheque for £5,000. Ross Dodge, is a 21-year-old bricklayer from Sheffield. He has been playing golf for 11 years and plays off a handicap of seven. Justin Fores, 35, has been a professional at Bondhay for eight years. Last year’s winners were from Far Grange Park Golf Club in East Yorkshire, with PGA professional Darren Leng and his talented amateur partner Phill Killey collecting the trophy.

to go with his greyness to pull it off. Despite the turmoil, there will be some kind of scope to strengthen the squad and I would like to see us up there at the business end of the season. The first few games will be paramount as we need to hit the ground running. Sink or swim time. The investment saga has been trundling on for as long as the Harry Potter films and I was bored of both a long time ago. I never thought anything of any significance would ever happen with it and I still don’t. To paraphrase an old football manager of mine, we have to pee with the todger we’ve got. Strafford’s resignation didn’t stun me to be honest. I was informed that he had fell on his sword by a friend of mine whilst I was visiting my dear old Nan. At the time I was helping her look for her purse which turns out to be a microcosm of how the club should react. I simply carried on looking for it

in December 2008 have greatly enhanced the day to day business operations of the club. In particular, Mr Strafford’s work in communicating with our supporters has fostered a stronger bond between fans and Sheffield Wednesday. The aim is for Sheffield Wednesday to be challenging for promotion during the coming season and as such, major work needs to be done to the first team squad. Howard Wilkinson will work closely with Nick Parker and manager Alan Irvine to build a squad that is capable of taking the club back to the Championship as soon as possible. As previously communicated, the board is still engaged in an investment process with a number of interested parties. There can be no certainty that these will successfully conclude in time to impact upon the first team rebuilding process this summer. The board will continue to operate on the basis that no external investment will materialise this summer. We urge supporters of Sheffield Wednesday to reinforce their backing for Alan Irvine and his management team by commit-

ting to purchase season tickets for the coming season. The board and manager will consider all options in terms of the current playing staff. The main considerations in these decisions will be the need to deliver a strong squad and the board’s responsibility to manage the club’s finances. Commenting on the Board changes, Interim Chairman Howard Wilkinson said: “I would like to thank Lee for all his work over the past 18 months. He is a true fan of Sheffield Wednesday and his efforts towards rebuilding this club should not be forgotten. “It is an honour for me to become Chairman, albeit I stress that this will only be on an interim basis. My focus now is on working with Alan Irvine to build a strong team and one that is capable of achieving promotion back to the Championship as soon as possible. “It has been a tough few weeks for everybody who cares about Sheffield Wednesday but by working together, we must try to ensure that we are able to look forward to a brighter season ahead.” but we are rebuilding a squad that we hope will equip us for a promotion challenge and this will give us some leeway towards bringing others in.”

James Harper is the highest profile name to leave the Blades who have announced the list of players whose contracts are up this summer. The former Reading midfielder made 33 league and cup starts after converting his initial loan to a full move in mid season. Whilst Nick Montgomery and Gary Naysmith are both still in negotiations with United about renewing their contracts, eight others will be leaving the Club,

including Glen Little and Henri Camara. Defenders Jonathan Fortune and Derek Geary have fought back well to overcome injury, Maltese International goalkeeper Justin Haber is staying permanently at sister club Ferencvaros in Hungary, and Ian Bennett will also depart. Striker Liban Abdi and midfielder Sam Wedgbury are released after featuring for the Reserves and picking up first-team experience whilst on loan at Ferencvaros. Kevin Blackwell says: “I would like to thank all of them for what they have given Sheffield United and hope that they soon find other clubs. “It is always sad to see long serving players leave, particularly when they have served us well,

The Sheffield United transfer see-saw is looking somewhat one-sided after nine players were released as their playing contracts came to an end. The list was led by James Harper, Glenn Little and Derek Geary with six others also facing the chop. And with rumours refusing to dissipate regarding the futures of many of our previously most dependable stars, Blades fans can be excused for starting to get a little worried. How much credence we can give to the constant stories of newly promoted Leeds United being poised to plunder our squad remains to be seen. A new name appears to be added daily, with Nick Montgomery, Chris Morgan, Jamie Ward and Billy Sharp all reportedly interesting our county neighbours. I think logic would suggest that there is no way that all four will make the switch, but equally unlikely that none will. My guess is that it will be one out of four, and that one will be the Leeds born Montgomery. Admiring glances are also being cast over our squad by former Blades manager Neil Warnock

now in the hot-seat at QPR, with Darius Henderson, Paddy Kenny and again Montgomery being linked with a move south. The upshot is that if half of all this is to be believed then we have got some serious work to be done before next season. While I would agree that we need to start redressing the imbalance on the see-saw and add a couple of new faces to the squad, as I said last week the priority must be to tie up the futures of the backbone of our squad. It seems that Bramall Lane will soon begin to resemble the Mary Celeste, which will make it very difficult for Blackwell to find players who in his words ‘can handle the pressure of playing for a club like Sheffield United’. Thank goodness that we have the consolation that however bad things may get, they won’t be as bad as at Hillsborough.

LEE STRAFFORD STEPS DOWN AS CHAIRMAN FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk

The Board of Sheffield Wednesday PLC (the board) can confirm that Lee Strafford has resigned from his position as Chairman with immediate effect. Howard Wilkinson, who has been acting as Technical Advisor to the board, has been appointed as Interim Chairman. The appointment will end on 7 August 2010, the start of the new football season. The board felt that such an appointment was appropriate, given the club’s focus in the coming weeks on revitalising the first team squad and building towards the new football season. The board would like to place on record its thanks to Mr Strafford for his service and dedication to Sheffield Wednesday. The changes instigated by Mr Strafford and Chief Executive Nick Parker since their appointment

regardless without really pausing to feel sorry for myself. As it turns out, the purse was in her bag all along but I fear the easiness of finding it is where the metaphor ends. Who knows what next week will bring? A new chairman? Investment? Gail’s freedom? Tune in to find out.

FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk The Blades’ matchday programme is an important means of giving our supporters both club information and interesting reading, mostly United based, and we try and produce a high quality and interesting issue. As part of the Media Department’s planning for next season’s matchday programme, it would be of value to us to gauge opinion from supporters and readers of last season’s magazine. In order to assist us identify the popularity and value of most of the components regularly used it would be most helpful if you could grade each of the following on a scale of 1-10 in which 10 is the highest regarded for enjoyment and value - and send to andy. pack@sufc.co.uk or mail to Andy Pack, SUFC, Bramall Lane, Sheffield S2 4SU.
