PARAMORE ANNOUNCE SHEFFIELD VISIT ARENA NEWS - PAGE 4
Exciting New Play Areas Springing Up Across Sheffield Young people across Sheffield now have even more opportunities to get active during the school holidays Eleven new-style active play areas have been completed across Sheffield in time for the Spring Bank holiday as part of the city’s Play Project scheme. Each of the playgrounds features a range of play equipment chosen by local children. Amongst the equipment on offer is a climbing forest in Hillsborough Park, giant nest swings at Beaver Hill and Rolling Acres, climbing boulders at Darnall and Richmond Parks, a willow tunnel at Charnock, waterplay at Millhouses, a BMX track at Richmond
Park, climbing nets at Tara Springs Park on Dorset Street and a giant circus hoop at Fox Hill. Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, the Council’s Cabinet member for Communities said: “One of the things we said we would do is provide extra investment to improve our much loved parks and green spaces right across the city. Despite the terrible weather conditions through the winter, the first phase of the scheme has been successfully completed. We consulted with local people, including the young people who
will actually use the equipment, to ensure the play areas meet their demands”. Last year Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet approved the injection of around £2 million into 23 play spaces across the city over a two year period. The City Council has been closely working with NHS Sheffield as part of the Let’s Change4Life programme to create a new generation of playgrounds that offer young people a challenge, helping them to get fit while providing fun and in more natural surroundings. “This money will
make improvements right across the city including Chapletown in the North, Herdings in the South, and Woodhouse in the East and Stannington in the West.” Councillor Mohammed added: “The key to this programme’s success is engaging with communities and working with the friends groups. Of course, it’s vital that we also talk to the children themselves. By doing this we intend to get the best possible result for local people from this major investment.” To mark the completion of the first 11
playgrounds the Council’s Activity Sheffield and Parks and Countryside Ranger Service are holding events at six of the improved parks over the Spring Bank Holiday. (see notes for editors). Andy Chaplin of the Friends of Hillsborough Park said: “The new play area is already proving very popular with young people and provides a useful alternative for slightly older youths to the original playground, which is ideal for younger children. This is yet another excellent facility for the park,
but by no means the last!” The second year of the Play Project is well under way, with designs being prepared for 12 further sites right across the city. One of the most ambitious proposals for next year is a new woodland play site in the Rivelin Valley, which makes the most of the natural surroundings to create a city destination site that will attract users across Sheffield. Sheffield was awarded £1.1 million to provide challenging, exciting, accessible and innovative play equipment and spaces for children and young people.
The programme was enhanced by an additional £500,000 through the Sheffield Let’s Change4Life programme under their Active Play initiative. This programme aims to dramatically reduce levels of childhood obesity within the city and the designs have been chosen to provide a physical challenge for children to help in the campaign to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity. The remaining funding has come from the Big Lottery, Yorkshire Water, Landfill Tax Credits and Section 106 (planning gain income).

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 39 by Mel Jacques Someone asked this week ‘how can I make a donation to Radio Nightingale?’ which reminded that sometimes what is obvious to us isn’t obvious to everyone. So Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and we welcome donations of any size towards the funds for continuation of the station. Cheques should be made payable to Radio Nightingale and can be sent to Rotherham General Hospital, Moorgate Road, Rotherham S60 2UD. We don’t generally accept donations of record collections simply because we don’t play records anymore and we rarely accept donations of CD collections as they often create duplication with our already extensive library. Straight forward donations are brilliant but we also understand that people don’t necessarily have the spare cash to hand over so some of our fundraising options don’t cost you anything. For example, our webshop where you can purchase goods online and the donation to Radio Nightingale comes from the retailer, not from you. Plus, fundraise for Radio Nightingale before the end of the month and WIN! A TV WORTH OVER £1000. Easyfundraising have teamed up with Argos to give away an awesome flat screen TV worth over £1000. This 42inch, High Definition beauty comes complete with Freesat so whatever you want to watch, you can watch it in style. It couldn’t be easier to enter, when you register at www.easyfundraising.org.uk/radionightingale between 1st and 31st May, you’ll be entered into a free prize draw to win this great prize. Plus for every purchase you make through the easyfundraising site until May 31st 2010 you’ll get that many more entries into the draw so make 20 purchases and you’ll get 20 entries! But if you’re purchases are from Argos then you’ll get double entries. When you’ve discovered how great easyfundraising is, tell your friends about it too and for every friend you refer you’ll receive another entry into the draw. So get along to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/radionightingale and start collecting your entries into the draw and raising money for Radio Nightingale. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www. radionightingale.org.uk

Get ready for the Bank Holiday heat at Crystal Peaks It’s official, we’re heading for a scorching Summer if the recent weather reports are anything to go by! Temperatures are set to hit a high note from the end of May, and this gives the perfect opportunity for you to get down to Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre and stock up on all those Summer fun items! With another Bank Holiday coming up this weekend, it’s a great time to get your friends and family over and have a BBQ, play some games and of course, catch some Summer rays. For all these items, a visit to Argos on the retail park could be in order. In store, they have over 60 BBQs to choose from so you’re sure to find the one you’re looking for. With prices starting from as little as £12.99, you can go for a simple instant lighting option, or if you fancy becoming the next Jamie Oliver of the BBQ world, go all out and get a gas powered multi burner option, with two grills for optimum cooking options! We all know that gathering round the BBQ is where men really find their home, so he’ll be in his element looking through all the items available to buy at the Crystal Peaks store. While you’re in there, why not pick up some outdoor games as well? Always handy for keeping everyone entertained whilst the food is cooking. The country is soon to enter World Cup madness, so why not have your own mini tournament in the garden? You can purchase a football and temporary goal posts set for £9.99 so get one set up and get kicking off!! For the younger children, why not pick up a paddling pool and fill it with play balls? And, if you dare,
Argos offer a great range of water pistols – be sure to pick one up for yourself as well so you don’t get caught out! Once you’ve sorted the garden out, now might be a good time to kit out the whole family with a new Summer wardrobe. Next door to Argos on the retail park is TK Maxx, which carries many hot arrivals perfect for all the family – and they also have a home section so you can pick up the items you couldn’t find in Argos, still at great prices. TK Maxx offers famous name brands at high street prices. In store at the moment they have a great range of designer sunglasses, many with 75% off. While your other half enjoys the football, get inspired by the WAG style and pick up an oversized bright coloured pair of shades a’la Victoria Beckham - you’ll be avoiding the designer price tag however as these start at around £12.99 each. They also stock male sunglasses if you fancy turning your partner into
David as well, so even if his football skills let him down as least he’ll look the part. For the kids, the Crystal Peaks store offers a range of clothes for both boys and girls. To keep them safe in the sun this weekend, why not pick them up some sunglasses as well? A Summer hat can also help shelter them from the sun. Finally, pop into the home section where you’ll find plenty of outdoor cutlery accessories for use at the BBQ. They also stock a range of cool bags, perfect for keeping your drinks cold. The bright plastic cups and plates start from £2.00 so buy them in a range of colours and really make a statement. So, now you’ve got the garden and the family sorted for the weekend, let’s just hope the sun does shine all weekend! And, just in case it doesn’t, it’s worth noting Argos also sell gazebos at really low prices – perfect for emergency shelter if needed!
Swift Nest boxes installed at Crystal Peaks
nesting Swifts have been recorded in the nearby village of Beighton, we’re hoping this will encourage nesting here also. To further attract the Swifts, we’re planning to play recordings of Swift calls throughout the day and we hope to see some of the birds nesting here in the very near future.” Crystal Peaks are working closely with Sally Pereira, Landscape Planning Officer at Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Bird Study Group. This relationship continues to grow, and ensures both parties are maximising opportunities to raise awareness of wildlife and environmental issues in the areas surrounding
Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre. For more information about Crystal Peaks B:Responsible campaign, please visit www. bresponsible.co.uk. To learn more about the plight of swifts see www.concernforswifts.com
In a bid to help support the declining numbers of Swift birds in the UK, Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre have installed six specially made nest boxes to help encourage the birds to make a home there. As part of their continuing B:Responsible campaign, the centre already has installed beehives on their roof, and it is hoped the Swift boxes will continue to bring more wildlife to the site. The centre is also working with Sheffield County Council to create a ‘Bio- Diversity Management Plan’ in 2010 which will help ensure areas around Crystal Peaks remain an attractive habitat for new and existing wildlife. Centre manager Lee Greenwood commented: “Following recent research by the RSPB, it was highlighted that Swift numbers have declined in the UK by 47% in the past 10 years. As

Weekly Wit JUST SHOWING OFF This guy walks into a bar on the top of a very tall building. He sits down, orders a huge beer, chugs it, walks over to the window, and jumps out. Five minutes later, the guy walks into the bar again, orders another huge beer, chugs it, walks over to the window, and jumps out again. Five minutes later, he re-appears and repeats the whole thing. About half an hour later, another guy at the bar stops the first guy and says, “hey, how the hell are you doing that?!” The first guy responds, “oh, it’s really simple physics. When you chug the beer, it makes you all warm inside and since warm air rises, if you just hold your breath you become lighter than air and float down to the sidewalk.” “WOW!” exclaims the second man, “I gotta try that!” So he orders a huge beer, chugs it, goes over to the window, jumps out, and splats on the sidewalk below. The bartender looks over to the first man and says, “Superman, you’re an a***hole when you’re drunk.”
FIVE WHISKEY SHOTS A man goes into a bar and seats himself on a stool. The bartender looks at him and says, “What’ll it be buddy?” The man says, “Set me up with five whiskey shots, and make ‘em doubles.” The bartender does this and watches the man slug one down, then the next, then the next, and so on until all five are gone almost as quickly as they were served. Staring in disbelief, the bartender asks why he’s doing all this drinking. “You’d drink ‘em this fast too if you had what I have.”, said the man. The bartender hastily asks, “What do you have pal?” The man drunkenly replies, “I have a pound.” THE CABLE GUY A guy goes into a restaurant wearing a shirt open at the collar and is met by a bouncer who tells him he must wear a necktie to gain admission. So the guy goes out to his car and he looks around for a necktie and discovers that he just doesn’t have one. He sees a set of jumper cables in his trunk. In desperation he ties these around his neck, manages to fashion a fairly acceptable looking knot and lets the ends dangle free. He goes back to the restaurant and the bouncer carefully looks him over for a few minutes and then says, “Well, OK, I guess you can come in - just don’t start anything.” JUST WATCHING TV Two guys were in a bar watching the television when the news came on. It showed a guy on a bridge that was about to jump, obviously suicidal. “I’ll bet you $10 he’ll jump,” said the first guy. “Bet you $10 he won’t,” replied the second. Then, the guy on the television closed his eyes and threw himself off the bridge. The second guy hands the first his money. “I can’t take your money,” said the first guy. “I cheated you. The same story was on the five o’clock news.” “No, no. Take it,” said the second guy. “I saw the five o’clock news too. I just didn’t think the guy was dumb enough to jump again!”

BONAMASSA @ MAGNA Just awarded the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the U.K.’s prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, blues-rock guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his tenth full-length solo album, “Black Rock”. The disc re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), who most recently produced 2009’s “The Ballad of John Henry”, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues Chart in February of last year. The album release will be followed by a multi-country tour taking Bonamassa to the U.S., U.K., Europe, Russia, Japan and Australia. The album was recorded at, and named for, Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece. “With this album, we wanted to explore a ‘world’ feeling, and this was the inspiration behind going to record in Greece and using some of the best Greek musicians to add a little flavor to a couple of the tracks. But it’s by no means a ‘world’ album. We wanted Joe’s usual youthful and energetic
LIVE REVIEW - RIHANNA venue: Sheffield Arena date: Thur 13th May
Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth tour landed at Sheffield Arena for one night only with an all singing, all dancing extravaganza. The show was a staging spectacular with props and visual effects that led the audience through Rihanna’s dreams and nightmares. And what dreams they were; filled with larger than life monsters on stilts, topless soldiers with bright pink guns and masked Rihanna clones. From the moment she appeared on stage for Russian Roulette on a travelling platform dazzling in a black dress covered in a red LED light array it was obvious that this was not going to be just any concert. Numerous props on stage never became the focus of the show but were used to great effect; a large neon cube which descended from the ceiling became a climbing frame for raving dancers in day-glo tracksuits and a large pink tank
BACK IN BLACK The Corp plays host to a 3-piece Alternative art-Rock band from Manchester “David R Black” on the 28th May. The band consists of ‘David R’, Paul ‘Pai’ Williams, and Ms Sarit Black. As I don’t know much about the band here are a few quotes from the press that make them sound quite interesting: “This Mancunian three-piece hone a unique combination of Undertones, Husker Du and Pixies influences. The statuesque, pop-tastic melodies, mature introspection and Who-esque riffs are simply intoxicating.” - CLASSIC ROCK (8/10) “It’s rare

tones to play alongside the worldly vibes of the Greek bouzouki and clarino,” said Shirley. Bonamassa adds, “It was the kind of record Kevin and I wanted to make. We needed to rock again a bit like on my first album. It’s youthful, like going back to your childhood.” Joe Bonamassa has signed up blues legend B.B. King for a duet on his new album. The song they will perform together is a rendition of the Willie Nelson-penned song, “Night Life,” which appeared on King’s 1967 album Blues Is King. Shirley says about the experience, “This is a rollicking Stonesy-vibe version of the Willie Nelson song on which B.B. King duets with Joe, both vocally and on his famous Lucille guitar. What a joy and an honor to work with the legend who is possibly the pivot point and unifying musician between blues and rock.” 2009 was a big year for Bonamassa which saw him play to a sold out crowd at London’s Royal Albert Hall, arguably the most prestigious concert venue in the world. Adding to the excitement, Eric Clapton joined him on stage for a joint-performance of Clapton’s hit “Further On Up The Road.”
Shortly after, Bonamassa released a 2-DVD live set – Joe Bonamassa – Live From The Royal Albert Hall – which captures the night in full for posterity, and for all the fans that couldn’t be among the roughly 5,000 concert goers filling the seats. Last year also marked Bonamassa’s twentieth year as a professional musician, a huge achievement for a performer just into his 30s. Recently, he was named Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine’s 2009 Readers’ Choice Awards for the third consecutive year. He is a spokesperson for the Blues Foundation’s respected Blues In The Schools program, volunteering his time during tours to speak with groups of high school students about the first pure American music form. Keeping with his blues roots but fluently moving between rock n’ roll and international sounds, 2010 is not only a new decade but a new era for Bonamassa.
which appeared to arrive from nowhere became a seat for a pared down version of Wonderwall. Set and costume changes were seamless with video montages tying together the different ‘acts’ of the show. Dancers and musicians alike were woven into the storytelling, and only occasionally did visually brilliant sequences, including acrobatic wire work from suspended metal work guns, distract from the vocal performance. For those who would suggest that the technical brilliance of the production was smoke and mirrors to disguise a lack of musical talent there were brief quieter moments where the stage spectacular was toned back and Rihanna’s voice was allowed to shine. One such moment saw her sat atop a grand piano, centre stage, for Stupid in Love. As a woman who has had her share of tabloid attention for her personal life, she demonstrated that she has every right to be known for her passion and talent. A problem with her microphone was covered up with ease and Rihanna did not appear to flag through the
90 minute set with her cries of “Let me hear you Sheffield!” being met with rapturous screaming from the mostly young female fans around the stage. The set contained the majority of the tracks from Rihanna’s current album, ‘Rated R’ including stand out singles Rude Boy and Te Amo, alongside the less well known such as Hard and Firebomb. Older tracks such as Don’t Stop the Music, Take a Bow and Unfaithful were scattered throughout the show and the glow of raised camera phones accompanied word perfect singing from those nearer the front of the arena. Rihanna ended the show with Umbrella, her biggest UK hit to date, complete with ticker tape rain-shower and accompanying twirling umbrellas across the arena floor, Retiring to the back of the stage on her moving platform, waving to the crowd, the video wall informed that the dream was over and it was time to “Wake Up”, pick the ticker tape from their hair and return to the real world.
these days for rock bands to make it big on the merit of great songs alone, but David R Black may just do that. The Manchester trio recalls a simpler time when raw, edgy, energetic guitar music had the power to impress without the aid of gimmicks or a six-figure marketing plan. Think Skunk Anansie or Feeder.” – ROCKSOUND. “An emotive debut from UK art-rockers!” – METAL HAMMER. “… the combination of song-writing, arranging, playing, singing and production, all wrapped up in an unstoppable adrenaline rush of rockin’ proportions, that stops you in your tracks and leaves you jaw-dropped in amazement as song after glorious song just erupts into your consciousness” – DEAD EARNEST. (A bit over the top that one mate) “A level
of musical integrity that gives me the confidence to truly define them as art-house rock…a genuine sound – a real band for real people, with a frothy layer of grit on the side.” – CMU MUSIC NETWORK. “Flying low under the radar, David R Black are the real underground” – LA WEEKLY. “David R Blacks’ sound borrows elements of classic British indie adding elements of true compassion and rock brilliance.” –ALTERNATIVE LINKS. If any of that has convinced you then don’t miss the live show on the 28th.

We should be really proud of our fair city (and surrounding areas of course). Sheffield has been such an important player in the musical world. From the ‘60’s and Joe Cocker right through to now with Reverend and the Makers. But in-between that was an era in which Sheffield really came alive and made this city infamous around the World. In the mid to late ‘70’s we had local bands that were on the cusp of a whole new movement. Taking influences from German electronic music such as Cann and Kraftwerk and discovering the synthesizer (sometimes even building their own). Mixed with the greyness of Sheffield, the soundtrack of working life at the steel foundries that were pounding away throughout the night. This city was ‘steel’ and because of the invention of electronic musical equipment, local bands could now reflect this bleakness within their music. Of course there was the early Human League, but also bands such as Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, Artery and Vice Versa (later to become ABC) were all in this fledgling underground scene. It was always going to be the “Which one will break through into the big time?” scenario. The Human League famously split, Phil Oakey bought in two girls and history for the League was made. Martin Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, now without a band, instantly formed BEF (The British Electric Foundation) so they could work on all kinds of different musical projects. Their first being the formation of Heaven 17. They bought in vocalist Glenn Gregory and the trio set out to prove a point…………....you cant blame them can you, the success of the League must have been galling. Penthouse and Pavement was their first project and was a huge success. Where the League had gone down the electronic/pop route Heaven 17 went more down the electronic/soul road. It had synth rhythms and sounds from the first two League albums, so much more so than the new Human League and their Dare album. But it had more depth to it also, it was definitely more muso, that was obvious. The other glaring fact was that
FANCLUB AT THE MILL! Teenage Fanclub return with an album, single and tour. The single is Baby Lee and is out now available as a 7” and download. It precedes the album; Shadows and you can catch the band’s tour when they play Sheffield on the 28th. After first gaining acclaim for a densely melodic sound which anticipated the coming emergence of grunge, Scotland’s Teenage Fanclub spent the remainder of their career as torch-bearers for the power pop revival, unparalleled among their generation for both their unwavering adherence to and brilliant reinvention of the classic guitar pop approach of vintage acts like Big Star and Badfinger. Blessed with the talents of three formidable singers and songwriters, all sharing an unerring knack for crafting immediately infectious melodies. Teenage Fanclub’s radiant brand of pop classicism enjoyed only a brief moment of devotion to its unapologetically old-fashioned sensibility yielded of commercial and critical
reviews by presley
Gregory sounded so much like Phil Oakey. That would make it an easier sell to the public. The first single ‘(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang’ was much more manic than what the League were doing and probably in hindsight was still a tad too obscure for the charts at that time. The radio ban probably didn’t help either! Was it banned because of what men behind desks at radio HQ thought was its political leanings………..huh?? Or was it because it had the word ass in the lyric? Who knows? The strange thing is though, the next three singles ‘Play To Win’ ‘Penthouse and Pavement’ and the stunning ‘At the Height of the Fighting’ didn’t get into the Top 40, they all hovered around 5-10 places lower. Was this a disaster at the time? The album charted at No.14 and steadily sold well, but it was no ‘Dare’ in the sales department. But retrospect is a wonderful thing, and now this album is seen as a classic and rightly so. You won’t hear another album like this, the imagery; artwork and sound are all unique. Yes you get hints of the brilliant first two Human League albums and thank goodness for that, but no-one else has ever come close to doing an album like this. Their ability to make an album that is electronically cold but has a warm depth to it is unique. With their follow up album ‘The Luxury Gap’ the guys eventually got the success they deserved with the massive ‘Temptation’ and really cool ‘Come Live with Me’ (check out the video to this on Youtube). More hits followed and their reputation was ensured. They continued doing other projects as BEF and in fact were completely responsible for Tina Turner’s comeback in 1982. They did ‘Ball of Confusion’ with her and then Ware produced her next single ‘Lets Stick Together’ and the rest is history as they say. We need to be proud of bands such as the ones mentioned in this revue. They are partly responsible for making Sheffield what it is today and how we are viewed musically around the World. vogue, and over time, the band’s dogged increasingly dwindling fan base and virtually non-existent record sales. Nevertheless, almost none of their contemporaries can claim either Teenage Fanclub’s consistency or longevity -- though never groundbreaking or hip, their music possesses a timelessness and accessibility matched by precious few. But we are not to forget that at the height of the band’s career; The album Bandwagonesque topped Spin magazine’s best-of-1991 year-end list in the face of staggering competition including Nirvana’s Nevermind, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, and R.E.M.’s Out of Time; a few months later, they were tapped as Rolling Stone’s Hot Band for 1992, and at the peak of their success, they even performed on Saturday Night Live, that same year also opening for Nirvana. Long illustrious pedigree don’t you agree ….. go see! TEENAGE FANCLUB: The Leadmill, Friday 28th May, Doors: 7.30pm, Price: £12.00 (optional delivery £1.00) Age limit: 14s+

YOUR WEEKLY
HOROSCOPES Miss by Deborah Turner-Broadhead Aries 20 March - 20 April Try not to lose momentum this week as restrictive Saturn and deep, pondering Neptune cruise into your sign. These planets may slow you down but that doesn’t mean that you actually have to stop or even postpone your many plans. Instead you must work that little bit harder to achieve them. However, it would be wise to review your situation and really think about the possible outcomes of your actions. Only proceed when you are sure about what you want. Angel Message - It takes courage to examine the truth and wisdom to except it. Taurus 21 April - 20 May Like Aries you are feeling the effects of Saturn and Neptune in your sign this week as your mood and indeed your energy levels seem depleted. You may feel as though your outer world has frozen in time. However, your inner world is still very active as your mind races with all sorts of plans, projects and ideas that you wish to push forward. The key here is to see this pause in your life as a stabiliser, effortlessly gliding you through this retrograde transition. Enjoy the rest as very soon your life will be hectic once again. Angel message Trust and have faith that behind the scenes your dreams are rapidly manifesting. Gemini 21 May - 20 June Money certainly makes your world go round this week as your lucky nature lands you in the right place at the right time. The opportunities you are offered will lead to even more lucrative surprises so stop procrastinating and grab them with both hands. It is a time to embrace and enjoy these experiences so relax and see where life takes you. Just be sure not to neglect your loved ones as they too are on your life path with you . Angel message - Be true to your vision and you will always find blessings in your situation. Cancer 21 June - 21 July Don’t panic if others seem a little distant and reclusive this week as planetary shifts have effected many of the signs. You are highly sensitive and you may indeed find it difficult to adjust to the low moods that surround you. However, by this weekend clarity is restored so make the most of the great weather. You have cosmic permission to entertain, socialise, eat and be merry. Angel Message - If you see someone without a smile please give them yours as you have the power of joy within you. Leo 22 July - 22 August Uranus the revolutionary planet certainly fires you up this week but do make sure you use this energy wisely and honour your commitments. If you fail to do so you may burn yourself out and ruffle other peoples’ feathers in the process. Remember to appreciate all the support you receive from friends and family as your reward will be their loyalty. Romantically what are you waiting for? There is no time like the present! Angel Message - It is safe for you to show your emotions. Virgo 22 August - 21 September Thursday’s full moon awakens your energy and determination to fight for the life that you not only want but deserve. It is time to take charge of your situation and prepare to move forward. Take baby steps towards your goals as steady progress is all that is needed here. Do let others in on your secret as you may find that the support just keeps on rolling in. Angel Message - You know that only love is real, everything else can be manifested. Libra 20 September - 21 October What an emotional week and some of you may still be feeling the aftershocks for a few more days yet. A much needed life review is in order to balance and re-harmonise any stressful situations. You simply cannot go on as you have been. The good news here is that you do know what to do to restore your inner peace and the universe is supporting you with these decisions. Have the courage and faith to make those necessary changes. Angel Message - Dissolve away any harsh or judgemental situations that no longer serve you - only open your heart to sweetness and love. Scorpio 22 October - 21 November Wow, even though two planets appear to be stuck in the sky restricting other Zodiac signs, you Scorpio are trail blazing and wasting no time at all. You are doing all that is required to create a successful life path. However, please remember the story of the tortoise and the hare - it is great to start a project with all that passion but please maintain and conserve your energy in order to complete it. Romantically you are on fire too! Just remember your heart is on the line so don’t make any hasty decisions. Angel Message - Ask for guidance and wait to receive a sign from above. Sagittarius 21 November - 21 December With the sun opposing your chart and the moon tracking through your sign it really is about connecting with people this week. You seem to be the star of your own show with friends, family and loved ones basking in your energy and enjoying the new memories that they are making with you. You can do no wrong! Yet again your adventurous spirit resurfaces as distant shores beckon you. Do I sense another holiday coming soon? Angel message -Renew and change your life path so that you feel passionate everyday making sure that you include work connections. Capricorn 21 December- 20 January Major cosmic fireworks could be heading your way over the next few weeks as the arrival of Uranus and Saturn make you stand your ground. The issue here seems to be connected to family and tradition and your reluctance to conform in any way, shape or form. You are ready for new challenges but try not to forget loved ones as they feel you are leaving them behind. Angel message - Positive change is all around you so go now and be the best that you can be. Aquarius 21 January - 19 February This vague, disillusioned state that you are feeling will soon pass and you will be pleased to know that it is just the planetary events that have made you feel this way. The full moon doesn’t help either as all your insecurities resurface and yes it is time to face all those recurring demons once again. You are a revolutionary but your energy seems to be wasted on repeating past patterns. Only you hold the power here to make these positive cosmic changes and with discipline I feel that you will. Angel message - You know what to do - cancel, clear and delete anything that no longer serves you and this includes your thoughts too. Pisces 19 February - 20 March Wow, despite the full moon’s influence leaving you feeling exhausted, over these next few days you will start to see your plans taking shape. Yes, opportunity knocks for you and you will find the strength to answer your calling. From a social and romantic view what amazing support you have. You will soon recognise that you have already obtained your happy ever after. Angel message - Clear your mind of any negative thoughts so that only good will return to you.

For Musicians, Karaoke, DJs & Professional Entertainers MERCURY 60s NIGHT IS A MAGIC SUCCESS PAUL WALKER’s CLUBSCENE There was almost a full house at Wadsley Bridge Club on Friday night for the Mercury 60s Party – and what a great night it was! Many of the audience dug out the old wardrobe and recreated the Flower Power atmosphere of the late 60s, joining in the fun, and helping raise money for Weston Park Hospital and Cavendish Cancer Care. We were delighted to welcome a number of friends from Magic AM, and in particular our regular columnist Trevor Thomas, presenter of the Breakfast Show, who got up on stage to open the evening. First up was a band new to the South Yorkshire Clubland scene – the fabulous “Beatles 4 Sale” who ran through a great repertoire of the Fab Four’s best known hits, as well as some more unusual choices, all faithfully replicat-
ing the original arrangements, before closing the set with a great rendition of the classic “Hey Jude” with the audience joining in. I think it’s safe to say that, from the reception they got from the crowd, and the number of people asking for their details, it won’t be long before we see them on stage in our area again. “California Dreaming” have been around a long time – in fact I’m sure the boys wouldn’t mind me commenting that nowadays they look almost the same age as the original Beach Boys! Despite a six hour trip from South Wales, they showed fantastic energy and showmanship as they performed classic hit after classic hit for over an hour – “Surfing USA, Sloop John B, Little Deuce Coupe, Help me Rhonda” and many more – leaving to a round of rapturous applause from the audience.
full bladders decided to grin and bear the pain rather than risking the response from the stage if they dared to move! As always, a great pro and a thirty minute slot that had the audience rolling on the floor. Final set of the night came from the “Bootleg Sixties.” A first rate set of classic songs including hits from the Searchers, the Kinks, the Mamas and the Papas and the Rolling Stones filled the dance floor. “Daydream Believer” as a closing number meant the audience demanded an encore – and the band responded with a blistering rock n’ roller to close – “What’d I say” wrapped the night up on a real high.
The “Bootleg Sixties” performed an entertaining and wide selection of hits from the 60s

Letter sent on behalf of Gary Philips (The Forest Showbar) A big hello to all The Mercury readers and I trust we are all enjoying some much overdue sunshine after the coldest winter in 32 years - two years before I was born!!! I’d like to say many thanks to everyone connected with our Help For Heroes charity night here at the Forest Showbar on Friday 14th May. Special thanks to Roger and all the ‘gang’ at Walkley WMC for contributing £420 to the ‘kitty’. Is this a first major pub/club cooperative joining forces in these financially uncertain times for the good of a universally acclaimed charity? Special thanks also to our artistes Geoff Michaels, B.J. White, Dave Henry, our Maggie - “the publican’s sweetheart” and of course to Jimmy Carol who, after 90 minutes on stage, left our customers wanting more! Thanks to our fundraisers, Norma & Val and Alan & Karen, all our wonderful customers for their generosity and support, Mr Howard “The Leg-end” Copley for his kind support (not forgetting the £50 he donated following the relegation of his beloved Owls) All these wonderful people raised a grand total of £1,726 for the Help For Heroes charity. And last but not least thank you to our servicemen and women fighting overseas for their bravery and courage. Take care and enjoy the summer (C’mon Eng-er-land!!!) Cheers Gary Philips
The energetic “California Dreaming” performed the hits of The Beach Boys
Next up was Jimmy Carol, who was quite offended to be asked to be involved in a 60s Night! We all know Jimmy, and I certainly do not intend to comment on his spot here, other than to observe that, as always, political correctness was not his first priority when producing his material, and secondly a lot of people with
BRIAN TAKES A LOOK BACK Sue Scholey contacted us here at the Mercury this week to let us know that Brian Carol, her father and veteran Clubland comedian, was about to reach his 80th birthday. We couldn’t let such a momentous occasion pass by without doing our bit to help celebrate, so we sent our reporter Jamie Pinder off to meet him and talk about his time on the stage in South Yorkshire! A lorry driver by trade, Brian turned his back on one life on the road to trade it for another in 1953. His first year was spent in the Sheffield pubs and clubs for the princely sum of 17s 6d per night (that’s 87p in new money!) He recalls his favourite venue on the circuit was the much-missed Dial House Club. Brian, who still gets out and about regularly, is saddened by the lack of popular comedy club acts nowadays and recalls the sense of community and fun amongst the artists back then. He tells me some of his favou-
Selected clips from the night featuring all the bands are available on Youtube (search Mercury 60s) or by following the link from www.mercurynewspaper.co.uk. There are several more Mercury Roadshow nights already planned during 2010 – see the advert in the newspaper. Tickets are now on sale for most of these from the Mercury Hotline (0114 2763633) or direct from the venues themselves. If you are quick, there a limited number of tickets still available for “Smackee” next Friday on 28th May at Crookes WMC. rites at the time were Ron Dukes, Paul Bryan and Allen Squires. Brian went professional in 1966 with ‘The Discos’, a famous mime act with the distinction of being the only club act to sell out the Fiesta Club, not once but for three consecutive nights! They toured all over the country, packing out clubs and theatres and were always in high demand on the American bases. When asked about his worst show he talks about an evening in Durham where ‘The Discos’ were due to play to two sell-out houses in one evening; however for the full 50 minutes of the first show, they performed to total silence from the audience. Fortunately the second identical show he tells me brought the house down. Luckily Brian sees the funny side and accepts ‘that all comedians die on stage sometimes!’ He looks back fondly on this period of his time in show business and refers to it as ‘the most enjoyable part of my career’. In 1971 he moved to Sunderland and became entertainments manager of a holiday camp where he was a popular and frequent performer for a number of years, before returning to Sheffield in the late 70s, joining a review with fellow acts Morris Burns, Irene, The Darrell Sisters, Caroline Jones, Dave Newman, Gail Marshall and Ernest Jones. In the 1980s he made an impact
DIFFERENT ENTERTAINMENT
I am focussing this week on a couple of alternative forms of entertainment that take place regularly in the pubs and clubs. Firstly karaoke. The massive growth in popularity probably caused a lot of damage to the traditional acts, as any pub could set up a decent rig for not a lot of money. Regulars would go in and become very very good at singing a few songs, to the point where the audience would encourage them to go out and perform for a fee. However the fees they were asking were unrealistic, causing great problems for the full time acts on the circuit who were often asking two or three times as much to sing at the same venues. Nowadays there’s an overkill –especially in the coastal resorts where every pub has a karaoke rig and there’s very little variety. On the other hand there are some fantastic acts on the circuit who started out on the karaoke, and developed the skills and confidence that have enabled them to make a living from pubs and clubs. I was drinking with one such act recently, watching an act perform, when he came out with the comment “he’s just a karaoke singer!” which really tickled me, given his beginnings! Personally I have nothing against karaoke as a form of entertainment, and I go to my local on a Sunday night and enjoy listening to people’s styles and the atmosphere that is generated by the karaoke. The nationally, reaching the final of “New Faces” and being voted back in as the viewers’ most popular choice throughout the series. In addition to his stage appearances he made numerous appearances on TV and radio, including ‘The Windsor Davies Show’ where he worked alongside Les Dawson and Sheena Davies. In the late 80s, planning to wind down and relax. Brian went on holiday to Benidorm. Unfortunately friend and colleague Johnny Kalander had other ideas. Johnny persuaded Brian to stay and perform in Spain for a few weeks - as a popular resident comedian he ended up spending over 16 years in the resort until he retired in 2003! As he approaches his 80th birthday Brian looks back at his 40 year showbiz career and says ‘I’ve had a great life – I’ve enjoyed every minute and all the special friends I made’ Brian and his family would like to invite Mercury readers and anyone who knows him to celebrate his 80th birthday with him and his family at Norton Oakes Cricket Club on Saturday22nd June at 2pm.

Festivals kick off with a sell out! The 2010 Fake Festivals tour has kicked off with a sell out at the first two festivals. With 19 dates in the calendar so far, and a few more to be added, Fake Festivals has certainly not had a fake start to their 2010 tour. “It’s been a fantastic start for us in 2010,” says Jez Lee, founder of Fake Festivals. “We franchised the business at the end of last year, to enable us to have more festivals around the UK, and it’s certainly paid off.” Fake Festivals is a one day live music festival with the local community in mind. Three international tribute bands headline the festival, such as the Antarctic Monkeys, New 2, Kings of Lyon, Coldplace and The Fillers. They are supported by local bands and artists, giving them a great platform to showcase their music. The festivals are held inside a marquee so the British weather cannot out a dampner on things, and there is a secure fenced area outside with food stalls, face painting, simulated surfing and other activities, to give it that festival feel. Festival-goers will also be surprised to see a few famous fake faces walking around the festival ground too such as Pete Doherty, Ozzie Osbourne, Mr Bean and David Brent who has recently been on Britain’s Got Talent. With the first two festivals selling out before the day of the festival, Fake Festivals are proving to be a hit with people who don’t want to spend a fortune on the bigger festivals, but fancy a good day out with their friends and family. “We have loads more festivals to come this year,” continues Jez, “and I’m looking at extending some of the marquees so we can accommodate more people.” Visit www.fakefestivals.co.uk to find out where there is a festival near you, and book your tickets as they are selling out fast! Haxey Fake Festival is on Saturday 26th June from 1.00pm with Kings of Lyon, Coldplace and Queen B.
Well, firstly what a great night we had last Friday! Our big 60s night at Wadsley Bridge Working Mens Club included a Beatles tribute, Beach Boys tribute and comedy from Jimmy Carol. If you’d like to have quick look at what happened if you missed it, or to relive any of it again if you were there, you can watch video highlights on our website now – magicam.co.uk Thanks to everyone who came up to chat as well, including Pete from Rotherham who, by his own admission, is a Jim ‘Bullseye’ Bowen lookalike. His daughter Debbie is also the spitting image for another famous face, actress Pauline Quirke from TV’s Birds of a Feather. This is because I asked who you’ve been told you look like, during the Breakfast Show… We heard from Steve, who is a dead ringer for football manager Mick McCarthy, and Diana in Stocksbridge, who while on holiday in Cyprus fooled waiters into thinking she is Shelley, actress Sally Lindsay, who used to serve behind the bar in Coronation Street. As for me, I was once told I bore a resemblance to Alan Shearer, but I think it’s just the receding hairline. What do you think? Don’t forget to keep listening all this week as well for a chance to win dinner, bed and breakfast along with use of all facilities for you and your partner at the Sheffield Hilton. Make a note of the “feel good” songs you’ll hear at some point in the day – 1 per day. Call in during Friday’s Breakfast Show when I play the last one, tell me the names of all the tunes and you could be a winner. The number to call is 0114 220 1548.

Top French Breaks Francophile Russell Cavanagh discovers unspoilt holiday destinations in Western France An hour from Leeds Bradford International Airport lies the pre-Roman city of Nantes. This is an attractive destination for those seeking short breaks, aided by Ryan Air connections every Monday and Friday. Capital of the Pays de la Loire region, Nantes is full of history and, with heavy industry such as shipbuilding all but gone, is successfully reinventing itself as a tourism centre. Numerous small vineyards - most famously producing Muscadet - buried traditional rivalries to set up the excellent Maison du Vin (offering wine-tasting sessions) and promote the area. English language is also being spoken more widely. Guided tours around the city abound, and there's much to visit: Cathedral Saint de Pierre & Saint Paul and the Castle of Ducs de Bretagne both document the city's past - from early settlement, through slave trade commerce and beyond; artists' colourful homes sit beside a thriving club scene on the Loire's left bank; the “Transfer the Machines” (pictured) artist/engineering laboratory situated in defunct shipyards; classy restaurants such as Brasserie La Cigale (authentic Art-Nouveau) and Restaurant Baron Lefevre; and much more! Hotel Belfort (from 60€ to 100€) is recommended accommodation. Other locations nearby are the fishing port town of Pornic and the Puy du Fou historical theme park. Although public transport is available, Ryan Air offers car-hire deals with Hertz (with English-speaking sat-nav to help explore beautiful countryside!) cheaper than any available locally. Pornic sits on the Atlantic coast and its attractions include sail-boat tours and the bleakly beautiful Bluebeard's Chateau. Its sandy beaches, with their rocky
outcrops and fishing huts, draw in locals and tourists alike. Le Calluna is a lovely hotel, ideally situated and costing 117€ to 171€. Puy de Fou is a huge theme park. Different re-enactments of battles from Medieval, Viking and Roman eras show regularly. Stunning displays of falconry, gladiators, wild animals, horseriding stunts, scenery changes … will delight adults and children alike. There are also splendid restaurant and hotel facilities on the grounds. Evening attractions include a “Richelieu's Musketeer” extravaganza. And those preferring tranquillity in the neighbouring Vendée countryside can luxuriate at
Domaine de Barbiniere. This rural six-room chateau is friendly, family-run, stylish and plays host to artists' exhibitions (with sculptures dotted around expansive grounds and images throughout the building). Cost is 100€ to 200€. Any or all, a recommended five-star break! Ryan Air - ryanair.com Nantes Tourism nantes-tourisme.com Loire tourist offices: sem-paysdelaloire.fr and ohlaloireatlantique.com

After last weeks gloomy report on the subject of water safety, I have some MUCH brighter news this week. I recently had an invite for a cup of tea (I love tea!) at Nitrobaits tackle shop owned by Mark Oakes. Situated at 5a Southey Road, Parson Cross, Sheffield, Mark has opened this new outlet ostensibly to cope with the high demand for his baits. Nitro baits featured in Angling Times as a result of Mark’s decision to donate some left over paste to an unlucky angler who just wasn’t catching. The result; he won the match he was fishing! The angler just happened to work for Angling Times and set out to track Mark down to find out more about his products. During the resulting photo shoot, over 90lbs of fish hit the bank and Nitro baits were on the map! The store features all you would expect from an independent retailer, with the addition of friendly advice on local venues, tackle and hot news; you might even get a cuppa if you hang around for long enough..... Mark has kindly offered 5 Individual Lakes
to sponsor a monthly competition aimed at the younger angler; open to ALL anglers under the age of 16, all you have to do is send a picture of your catch, whatever size, whatever species, to me at clint597@btinternet. com It doesn’t have to be a 30lb carp, just a great angling shot! The prize is purely for the nicest catch picture! Remember to include your name, address and a few details of the venue and tactics and you could walk away with £25 of Nitrobaits!! The best picture of the year will take home a fantastic Daiwa rod and reel combo worth over £150! Make sure you visit www.nitrobaits.co.uk or the shop to see the complete range of Nitrobaits. Some news now from Candy Corner Fishery near Doncaster. Jamie has sent through the latest match reports and you have to be catching at least 70lbs to be in with a chance of framing on AJ’S lake at this prolific venue. Paul Wright fished pellet waggler set just 18 inches deep to take carp to 17lbs in his match winning 115lbs. This is apparently the best 20 Acres of Water 150 Pegs

EAGLES MAKE IT FOUR ON THE BOUNCE Dewsbury Rams 20 Sheffield Eagles 22
Tetley Stadium, Dewsbury, Thursday 20 May A dramatic last-minute penalty kicked by Mitch Stringer gave the Eagles four straight wins in a tight game at Dewsbury. With the teams level on 20-20 the Rams fullback Lee Lingard knocked on then kicked the ball away. Referee Ronnie Laughton awarded the penalty and Stringer coolly slotted it over. The Eagles started well but faded late in the first half and struggled against a battling Rams team from then on. In the first 20 minutes stand-off Brendon Lindsay and his halfback partner Aaron Groom were moving the ball out fast with forward Trevor Exton and centre Menzie Yere putting in blasting runs. Exton and Yere made the opening to send Richie Barnett in but the winger was body-checked and from the tap penalty hooker Craig Cook squeezed his way over for the opening try. The Eagles were making the running with a 40-20 kick giving them possession and after a weaving run by Barnett set up the position Michael Haley soften up the Rams defensive line with a power run before Stringer finished the job blasting over the line. Stringer added the goal. Dewsbury came back with Ed Barber sweeping through a gap near the line after tap penalty for an unconverted try. A passing move between Matty Brooks and Lindsay was finished with Dane McDonald bursting on to Groom’s pass for the try.
SEASIDERS CLINCH MILLION POUND A MINUTE FINAL
Lindsay couldn’t add the goal. Only a great chase and covering tackled by Lindsay prevented a Rams try from an interception. Former Eagles half-back Dominic Brambani led a revival by the Rams with second row James Lockwood getting try and Pat Walker adding the goal to narrow the Eagles lead to 14-10 at the break. Batley kept the pressure up with a try soon after the break from Andy Bostock from Brambani’s chip kick. Pat Walker added the goal for the Rams to take a two point lead. It needed a quick response and the Eagles got it as prop forward Haley used brute force in a great ball carry that took him close to the Rams posts. It was just right for Cook who dropped over from dummy half for try 15 for the season Stringer added the goal. For most of the rest of the half the Rams laid siege to the Eagles line. The pressure had to tell and the Rams levelled the score with an unconverted try from winger Bryn Powell. With only four minutes it seemed a drop goal would settle the points but after Cook’s attempt was charged down Rams fullback Lingard knocked on then kicked the ball away in frustation giving Stringer the match winning penalty. Blackpool’s manager Ian Holloway stuck to the attacking principles adopted this season and sent his team out with an adventurous 4-3-3 formation. However, Cardiff City settled into the game quicker than their opponents and deservedly took the lead on 9 minutes. Peter Whittingham threaded the ball through the Blackpool defence to play in the lively Michael Chopra after he had made an intelligent run to stay onside. MIXED DISCIPLINE A SUCCESS
As the Eagles welcomed Toulouse for the Championship Fixture there was a sense of unity in the air as in the pre match games Rugby and Football came together to provide a unique curtain raiser. Players from Sheffield Hawks under 12’s (amateur rugby league) and Thorncliffe Juniors Under 13’s (amateur football) provided 4 teams of 7 players to participate in a 7 a side game of football and a 7 a side game of touch rugby league running side by side on the pitch at Bramall Lane. As the games where going on coaches from both sides came up and said how much they were enjoying it and you could see on the faces of all the participants that everyone was having a great day and really enjoying the experience. Adam Hughes the Community Manager at the Sheffield Eagles said ‘the day was a huge success to see rugby and football being played alongside each other at such a high quality venue was a pleasure to see, even more pleasing was the amount of enjoyment the children got from the opportunity’.

Just opposite G casino. penalty area and Charlie Adam, Blackpool’s record £500,000 signing from Rangers, fired a left footed free kick through the wall giving David Marshall in the Cardiff goal no chance whatsoever. Cardiff’s woes deepened two minutes later when star striker Jay Bothroyd was forced from the game to be replaced by Kelvin Etuhu, brother of Fulham’s Dickson. Buoyed by the goal, Blackpool then took the game to Cardiff and were in the ascendancy for the rest of the first half. However, against the run of play, Joe Ledley put the Bluebirds back in front on 37 minutes. Ledley combined well with Whittingham to make a run through the inside left channel before placing the ball past the oncoming Gilks in the Blackpool goal. The same player had scored a Wembley FA Cup semi final goal against Barnsley two years ago. In the 8 minutes that remained of the first half, the ball ended up in the back of the net another three times. Blackpool levelled again on 41 minutes when Marshall spilled a corner kick, Ian Evatt’s shot was blocked on the line by Mark Kennedy, but the ball fell for Gary Taylor-Fletcher to stab into the net. In the first minute of added time at the end of the first half, Ormerod scored his winning goal. DJ Campbell collected the ball at he edge of the City area and initially looked to slip, but the ball squirmed through to Ormerod and he finished past Marshall from close range. A Darcy Blake effort for Cardiff could have given them an equaliser before referee Andre Mariner had the chance to blow for half time, but his effort was correctly ruled out for an offside infringement. Cardiff pressed for an equaliser in the second half, but their efforts were in vain as they toiled to break down a resolute Blackpool rearguard in the energy sapping conditions. Ultimately Blackpool ran out deserved winners and have the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal to welcome to their 12,555 capacity Bloomfield Road ground next season. Meanwhile Cardiff will plough on through another season in the Coca Cola Championship facing winding up orders from Her Majesties Revenue and Customs over an £1.9 million unpaid tax bill.
International blow for young Owl
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Liam Palmer’s Scotland Under19 side suffered a dent to their European Championship qualifying ambitions in Croatia on Saturday. Billy Stark’s team looked to be heading for a valuable point against Belgium, only to go down to a last-gasp strike that gave the Belgians a 2-1 win. Owls academy product Palmer played 79 minutes of the game that left Scotland’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance. The Scots are now level in second place with Belgium, with both countries trailing leaders and hosts Croatia by three points. Scotland can still qualify for the
finals if they beat Croatia in the last bout of games but it is not completely in their own hands, as even if they take three points from their final contest, they will still have to depend on Belgium dropping points to Montenegro. Otherwise, goal difference will come into play. Meanwhile, Wednesday manager Alan Irvine says it will be ‘a massive bonus’ if Palmer makes a name for himself domestically next season. The versatile teenager recently put pen to paper on a first-year pro contract at Hillsborough and the challenge ahead is to forge a path into the Owls’ first team. Irvine said: “If Liam breaks into the first-team this year I think that will be a massive bonus for us. I’m not looking at Liam as someone who is suddenly going to have an impact on the first team stage. “If he does, then fantastic, but I am not going to put the lad under that pressure.

Blade DEL TAKES Ex lauds A BREAK Seasiders LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
Derek Geary has admitted it has been an emotional few days after learning he would not have his current deal with the Blades extended and he is unsure what the future holds. The popular full-back has typified United’s identity during his time at the Lane, fighting back from several serious injuries along the way, although he has acknowledged that the time is right to make a clean break. Geary has nothing but praise for the support he has received from the terraces: “I have been with the club a long time so it is disappointing to be leaving, but with the injuries over the last two years it is probably the right time to move on, although it is still emotional. “My six years with the Blades have been great after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, but I have just loved every minute of my time in the city, to be honest. “I need to take a break over the summer and rest the knee. Everyone knows about my problems, but I will assess things and see what my options are. “I want to carry on but I am also realistic about the situation, too. I am 30 next month so I will see how I feel in a few weeks. If I can carry on I will, if not I won’t - it is that simple. “I knew I would get back playing and it was satisfying to play quite a few matches, although it would have been nice to get a proper chance to say goodbye to the fans in the last couple of matches. “The main thing is I have no regrets from my twelve years in Sheffield and I will look back at them with plenty of fond memories.”
Former Blade Alan Wright has joined the chorus of approval for Blackpool’s astonishing elevation to the top flight last Saturday. His former club clinched promotion in dramatic fashion, making it a double celebration for the defender as his current club, Fleetwood Town, has also been promoted from the Conference North to the Conference Premier. “It is a terrific achievement, built on attacking football and the ability to score goals. They have played some entertaining stuff, a bit like West Brom, with two attacking full-backs and a midfielder dropping into a holding role, usually Vaughan,” Wright told Sky Sports News before Blackpool’s victory homecoming parade. As unlikely members of the Premiership next season Blackpool will have to astound the critics again to survive but Wright refuses to write them off: “The forwards will be the key because they win you matches whereas defenders help stop you losing them. If they can add one or two I believe that they will score goals at the top level.” The Seasiders have other pressing problems, not least trying to upgrade Bloomfield Road to cope with the extra demands, both of their own fans and of the opposition, after averaging only around 8,000 last season: “Providing extra capacity is massively important to them. More fans mean more revenue and the big Premiership clubs will want to bring thousands of supporters.”
Page 35
“Liam is very comfortable on the ball, has got good awareness and is athletic. He has got attributes and there is no doubt about that. “He has done well in training but there is a huge difference between doing well in training and then performing well in the team. “Liam has got a long way to go but his attitude is right so hopefully he will continue to progress.”

THE SHARPEST BLADE
WEEKLY FANS COLUMN Jon Warburton Did you ever hear the story of the Sheffield-born striker that scored goals at every club he ever played for except the team he supported as a boy? Billy Sharp’s footballing career thus far has been littered with goal-scoring success, except when it comes to the time spent playing for Sheffield United. It is for this reason that a player regarded as one of the Championship’s most prolific marksmen may be on the verge of leaving our club on the cheap. Sharp’s situation as it stands is something of a quandary. His form at Doncaster Rovers this season has shown that he is most definitely capable of scoring goals at this level, yet somehow he never managed to replicate that form for the Blades. The argument that rears its head most often by way of explanation is that he doesn’t fit into our style of play, but is better suited to Doncaster’s fluent passing philosophy. While I haven’t seen as much of our neighbours from up the M18 as I have the Blades, what I have seen of them has greatly impressed me. In our encounter at the Keepmoat last season they created chance after chance in the first half, many of which were tap ins, and if Billy had been on the field he would have no doubt had a field day. But whenever Billy Sharp turned out for the Blades he more than often had is back to goal, was nowhere near the penalty area and appeared to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. It is probably fair to say that a striker at Bramall Lane has to put in a lot more individual graft to add to his tally than a striker at Doncaster Rovers, a task that Richard Cresswell gladly took to in the second half of the season. But whatever the reasons for his failure to launch at Bramall Lane, it doesn’t take the sharpest Blade to realise he will most likely be on his way.
