MUST SEE EVENTS AT THE SHEFFIELD FOOD FESTIVAL Sheffield Food Festival celebrates the South Yorkshire launch of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign on Saturday 5 June, where Celebrity Chef Nigel Brown will be on hand to show just how easy it is to eat well, save money and help the environment. Nigel will feature in the deliciouslyorkshire ‘Demonstration Theatre’ located in the Peace Gardens at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 14.30pm. Nigel will be showcasing mouthwatering recipes from

everyday ingredients; proving to the audience how easy it really can be to use up your leftovers and make your food go further. At 1.00pm Nigel will host the ‘Love Food Hate Waste Cook Off’, where DJ’s from Hallam FM and Magic AM will go up against a special guest in a ‘Ready, Steady Cook’ style challenge – with leftover ingredients suggested by the radio stations’ listeners. Staff from the waste and recycling team at Sheffield City Council will be present in

Millennium Square on Saturday 5 June between 10am and 3pm with information, recipes, alongside a bicycle powered smoothie maker! Chef Nigel Brown is committed to reducing the amount of food that gets thrown away, he said: “A great deal of effort goes into producing and delivering our food and it’s sad to think so much of it ends up in the bin. If I can help people really use everything they buy, they can reduce their weekly spend on groceries and eat healthy imaginative

meals. It’s what our mum’s and grannies have been telling us for years, “waste not, want not”, it’s time we started listening and acting on their excellent advice.” Love Food Hate Waste is the ‘Waste Not Want Not’ of the modern day, providing handy tips, advice and recipes for leftovers to help everyone waste less food. An astonishing 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year; 5.3 million tonnes of this is perfectly good food that has just not been

eaten in time, or too much was cooked and the remainder thrown away. This is the same in weight as 5, 300,000 small cars. Wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year. It also has serious environmental implications. If every household stopped wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road. But while the effects of this wasted food are shocking, Love Food Hate Waste focuses on simple,

positive, common sense steps to help you eat well, save money and make your food go further - planning meals, checking stocks, building confidence in the kitchen, taking a list when you go shopping, understanding best-before and use-by dates, good storage and portion control. Cllr Andrew Sangar, cabinet member for Climate Change, Waste Management and Environmental Regulatory Services said: “We are very supportive of the Love Food Hate

Waste campaign and thrilled that they have a presence at the Food Festival. I am sure that people will find their hints and tips extremely useful to reduce waste, save money and enjoy good food.” Sheffield City Council Leader Cllr Paul Scriven said: “What an excellent addition to Sheffield’s first Food Festival! I’m really excited about the variety we have to offer and I’m looking forward to getting fit whilst making my own smoothie.”

THIS WEEK’S COMPETITIONS Win a pair of Tickets The Independence Day Jazz Evening at The Copthorne Hotel Page 3 VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 39 by Mel Jacques

This week is National Volunteers week, an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. Radio Nightingale is operated by volunteers carrying out all sorts of tasks from sorting CDs, collecting requests, fundraising, making jingles, outside broadcasts, interviews, programmes etc. The aim of it all being the same, to bring entertainment and comfort to people in hospital. I’d like to share with you a memory of volunteering that will stay with me forever and reminds me why we do it… One Monday evening, some years ago a nurse came into our library room and asked that I play Cliff Richard, any song, as soon as possible for a patient. Sensing an unusual urgency about this request I started the programme a little bit early and after a brief good evening played the request. Having completed the request I carried on with the programme and paid no more was thought of it. Several months later I bumped into an old friend of mine at a local rock gig and having known him and his family for many years I asked “how’s your mum” to which he replied “she passed away three months ago”. After offering my condolences, knowing that I was involved with Radio Nightingale he said “she was in your hospital and they played a request for her on Nightingale”. He didn’t need to go any further; I knew what he was going to say next, “I played it – Cliff Richard”. “Yes”, he replied, “her favourite song, all the family was sat round listening to it and as it ended she said ‘I’m going to heaven with Cliff’”. If you would like to volunteer to be part of a radio station that can offer comfort contact us on 01709 304244 or admin@radionightingale. org.uk. You don’t need any expert knowledge or technical expertise to be successful Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. LADY GAGA Lady Gaga is currently touring the extension of her Monster Ball Tour. Unfortunately the logistical issues of extending this tour meant that some of the original dates had to be re-scheduled and this affected her concert at the Sheffield Arena. The Arena did apologise for this change, but the Sheffield Arena show will now be taking place on Friday 4th June 2010. Ticketholders who purchased tickets from Sheffield Arena Box Office are being contacted by letter. Tickets purchased for the Lady Gaga concert at the Sheffield Arena on Sunday 7th March 2010 will be valid for the new date of Friday 4th June 2010 and do not need to be exchanged. Lady Gaga last appeared at the Sheffield Arena in February

2009 as special guests on The Pussycat Dolls Tour and this will be her first headline show here at the Sheffield Arena. The Fame Monster is a two-disc re-package of Lady Gaga’s 4 million-selling debut The Fame. It will feature the entire breakthrough album – including the hit singles Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi, LoveGame, Bad Romance and Telephone – alongside eight entirely new songs.

COPLEY’S COLUMN I did last week’s column in a bit of a rush, and did not have time to proof read it, and in consequence there were a couple of omissions, which I am happy to correct this week. First gaffe was I went to great lengths to praise an excellent singer at the FABLE concert, and not naming him, save for the fact that he was the son of Lynn Gillette. I am happy to reveal all and tell you that this superb artiste was in fact Scott Anson. Secondly, whilst extolling the virtues of Lizzie Palmer for applying dressings to my badly injured toe, I described her as my nurse, when in fact she is the finest chiropodist in Dronfield. That over, down to the business of the past seven days, and I am pleased to report that Dronfield, the Las Vegas of N.E. Derbyshire is now to have some regular jazz sessions, fortnightly, commencing on the first of June at the Manor Hotel, which is part of ex Sheffield United’s Kevin Gage’s empire. The big news of the week is the murders of three prostitutes in Bradford. It is of course not for me to judge the innocence or guilt of Stephen Griffiths, but he did not help his cause by replying, when asked his name, the crossbow cannibal, particularly in light of the fact that one of the murders was caught on cctv cameras where the victim was killed

with a crossbow. This of course will bring back to memory the atrocious crimes of the Yorkshire ripper, and will doubtless hinder any chance he has of being paroled. Just when the new coalition government seemed to have got off to a good start, the expenses scandal again reared its’ ugly head. David Laws, supposed bright boy from the Liberal Democrats, and prominent member of the cabinet has resigned after claiming £950 per month for eight years, which was paid to his live in lover, James Lundie. I have a certain amount of sympathy for David Laws, as to make a complete disclosure would have in effect ‘outed’ him as a homosexual, causing much embarassment to his family. However, after the massive fraudulent claims of many members of parliament, it is now paramount that every single one of them is seen to be squeaky clean. The first I knew of the death of top ventriloquist, Ray Alan, was when I received many texts about his dummy, Lord Charles, being speechless, and making no comment etc. Thank the Lord that when I die, I won’t have to witness all the tasteless ‘one arm jokes, most of which are so old they were probably told at my christening. There has been a lot of action

ushered in a new era of sports. Former player Mannie Jackson purchased the team in 1993, becoming the first African-American to own a major international sports and entertainment organization. He led the team to unprecedented levels, tripling its revenue in three years and quadrupling its size in five, cementing its status as the most predominant and recognized sports and entertainment organization in the world In September 2005, Burbankbased Shamrock Capital Growth Fund purchased 80 percent of the team from Jackson. Jackson eventually stepped back from day-to-day functions, and the Globetrotters announced the appointment of Kurt Schneider as Chief Executive Officer in May 2007. Jackson remains Chairman of the Board of Directors and retains 20 percent ownership in the team. The Globetrotters’ show will feature even more amazing basketball skills and wizardry, with a continued focus on family entertainment. Off the court, the organization will increase alliances with global partners, develop a full line of licensed products, execute a multi-media strategy to gain worldwide saliency, and continue the brand’s legacy of deep social involvement in local communities. Tickets priced £12.50 - £40 (subject to booking fee) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 19th February, in person at the box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk

TWO STRINGS These two strings walk up to a bar. The first string walks in and orders and the bartender throws him out and yells “I don’t serve strings in this bar...” The other string ruffs himself up on the street and curls up and orders... The bartender shouts, “Hey, didn’t you hear what I told your buddy?” String says “Yeah.” Bartender says, “aren’t you a string?” String says, “No, I’m a frayed knot...” A PASSING COMPLIMENT A man walked into a bar and sat down, ordered a beer. As he sipped the beer, he heard a soothing voice say “nice tie!”. Looking around he noticed that the bar was empty except for himself and the bartender at the end of the bar. A few sips later the voice said “beautiful shirt”. At this, the man called the bartender over. “Hey...I must be losing my mind,” he told the bartender. “I keep hearing these voices saying nice things, and there’s not a soul in here but us.” “It’s the peanuts” answered the bartender. “Say what?” “You heard me” said the barkeep.”it’s the peanuts...they’re complimentary.” THE YOUNG BUSINESSMAN A young businessman had just started his own firm. AROUND THE CLOCK GYM PROMISES TO GIVE CITY BUNS OF STEEL! The UK’s fastest growing fitness chain, Pure Gym, opened its revolutionary new gym concept of 24 hour opening times and no fixed contracts for members, in Sheffield late yesterday with the help of the current Miss Sheffield, Kayleigh Hewitt. The city, famous for its steel industry saw Kayleigh officially open the new health and fitness club, on Manton Street in Sheaf Gardens, alongside Gym Manager, Anthony Berry and Assistant Manager, Matthew Williamson as the first 24 hour fitness commitment launches to the Sheffield public. Great news for the flourishing Sheffield economy, as the former car dealership building has benefited from a £1 million investment to redevelop and create what is now a modern, spacious and clean 15,000 square foot gymnasium, set to employ up to 20 staff. The new club also boasts world renowned cyclist, Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG® SSeries indoor cycles by Matrix, only the second club in the UK to feature these advanced pieces of fitness equipment. It is also the first club in Sheffield to showcase the next generation of vibration technology in the form of Bodycore functional training platforms. The 24 hour opening is also welcome news to the 17,000 plus businesses in Sheffield, of which the largest area of employment is within the hotel, leisure and restaurant sector, renowned for unfavourable working hours. This more accessible, but no frills approach to fitness which has already been launched and is successful in six other UK cities, was brought to fruition by

entrepreneur and leisure industry specialist Peter Roberts. Peter, Pure Gym’s CEO said: “In the current economic climate everyone is looking for ways to save money and Pure Gym offers that, without compromise. We offer a brand new, fun and desirable place to work-out for at least half the price of our competitors, there’s no binding contract and our members have the opportunity to exercise 24/7 in a safe and secure environment.” Armed with a wealth of experience in the leisure industry, having started the Langdale Group PLC in 1980; set up Luminar Leisure in 1989 and launched the Golden Tulip UK hotel chain in 2002 before selling it to Whitbread PLC in 2007, Peter is now focussed on expanding and making the same success of Pure Gym. He added: “As well as the

DOWNLOAD 2010 UNSIGNED TAKEOVER Yes its that time of year again the Download festival is upon us. It seems this past few years Rock music is beginning to pull itself out of the dark ages, and following on from one of the most successful years this year’s lineup looks set to follow the trend. The Download Festival was conceived as a follow up to the Monsters of Rock festivals, which had been held in at the Donington Park circuit between 1980 and 1996. Rather than run as a single day event Download was initially a 2-day event (expanding to 3 days in 2005). The name Download was chosen for the festival for two reasons. Downloading was a dirty word in the music industry at the time, due to file sharing, and rock is seen as a rebellious genre of music. The organisers faced pressure from the rest of the industry, with some even claiming that the Download Festival would “destroy the music industry”. Also Download was to be a Monsters Of Rock for the 21st Century and the Internet would provide connectivity with its audience. So onto this year’s Headliners: Friday sees AC/DC who are bringing their own stage with them! In true AC/DC, over-the-top style, only their own stage can handle the legendary spectacle that is AC/DC – resplendent with pyrotechnics, hell’s bells, cannons, and of course the inflatable Rosie! For the first time ever a headlining act is bringing their own stage and specifications to the Donington site. The AC/ DC Stage will be situated next to the Main Stage. This means that rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures will be headlining the Main Stage on the Friday, before AC/DC take over on their own stage. Supporting Them Crooked Vultures will be Wolfmother, 36 Crazyfists and Unearth. All other stages will be up and running as usual. Saturday presents Rage Against The Machine, considered the forefathers of the whole rap-rock fusion movement, double Grammywinning Rage burst onto the music scene with their hugely influential debut album,

which contained the single “Killing In The Name” with the infamous ‘Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me’ refrain, and of course was responsible for keeping the X factor Xmas single off the No1 spot. Sunday welcomes Rock legends Aerosmith known as ‘The Bad Boys from Boston’ or ‘America’s Greatest Rock ‘N’ Roll Group’, Aerosmith are the best selling American rock band of all time. Fronted by the inimitable Steven Tyler, their hit singles include Livin’ On The Edge, Crazy, and Love In An Elevator. “In the early days of Aerosmith we were infected with the vibe coming out of the UK with The Yardbirds, Blues Breakers, Pretty Things and the Stones, and we wanted what they had bad,” says Steven Tyler. “So baby, we’re coming home. Rock & Roll can be pure sex and we can¹t wait to Download...” As usual the line-up is vast and we don’t have the space to list every band, but look out for Stone Temple Pilots, Motorhead, Slash, Billy Idol, Ratt, Deftones, Megadeth, Lamb Of God, Thirty seconds to MARS, HIM, and Bullet For My Valentine, to name but a few. Details can be found on line at the Official Download site, or the myriad of other sites covering the event. So that’s the Download Festival 2010….See ya there!

The Leadmill is being taken over by unsigned acts On Saturday 5th June. 4 local Indie acts are to take to the stage at The Leadmill as part of a big unsigned night promoted by the bands themselves. The Magi, Pistola Kicks, The Ratells and Ketamine Kim are the acts in question and it promises to be a great Pre-world cup party. The Leadmill which has been host to some of the greatest bands of the past 15 years is delighted to have such a high calibre of unsigned acts on the bill. At only £5 a ticket it promises to be a steal with all four acts from Sheffield. The Magi, Pistola Kicks, The Ratells & Ketamine Kim - The Leadmill - Saturday 5th June - £5 entry

STRAIGHT FROM LEFTFIELD Leftfield are set to be one of the mustsee bands of this summer’s festival season. Leading the dance music charge of the early ‘90s, Leftfield carved a path for a raft of great artists including Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy. Their pioneering debut album ‘Leftism’ often tops ‘Best Dance Album’ polls, whilst their live shows are the stuff of legend. Leftfield’s live return is an opportunity for everyone to experience one of this country’s most influential dance artists.

It’s quite scary for one to be so talented and still only be 18 years old. She, apparently, is still very excited that she’s now old enough to out clubbing with her sisters. This is the title track of her debut album. With the previous two singles she’s set the charts alight. This song will probably follow that success. It’s an upbeat song that features her very soulful voice, unusually soulful for her age. She does tend to drop in the erm………. lets call it “the common accent” from time to time. As readers of this page will know, I’m not a lover of accents in music. The Lilly Allen et al thing I find quite grating, but thankfully she doesn’t do it too much. I’m hoping the accent thing is just a fad and eventually we can get back to some authentic pronunciation in pop (wink).

A brand new album ‘Praise and Blame’ will be upon us by late July. This landmark album comes in the legendary singer’s 70th year, a glowing achievement in what has been a ground-breaking, unpredictable roller-coaster of a 45-year career. The songs are taken from repertoire that includes American traditional, gospel and country, seeing Tom going back to his roots and creating a truly evocative musical work, aided and abetted by producer/ musician Ethan Johns. It’s preceded by this single which is a cover, originally done by John Lee Hooker. It’s actually a double A-Side with the slightly softer tune ‘What Good Am I’ Personally, I believe this is the best thing Tom’s done in years. Its dirty, gritty, soulful and oozes gospel and class. The guitar is wonderful, in-fact there’s little else to this song, just a basic sparse drum and Tom’s vocal, one of the best vocals he’s probably ever done. This is what I’d loved Elvis to be doing now if he was still with us. Go to www.myspace.com/tomjones and have a free listen. It’ll make you want to sit on your front porch in your rocking chair drinking bourbon straight from the bottle.

track album. These albums may include music from the movie; then again, they may not. Bizarre I know? A lot of these (so called) soundtrack albums can be awful, but this one has a fair few top names on it. Bands such as Muse, offering up ‘Neutron Star Collision’ Florence and the Machine’s ‘Heavy in your Arms’ and The Bravery’s ‘Ours’. Plus you get Beck dueting with Bat For Lashes as well as Vampire Weekend. As far as soundtracks go, this is pretty good and worth a listen or two. Just make sure you hide the sleeve from you know who! embark on a solo career with the release of my first solo album. I also want to continue concentrating on my DJ’ing work, so I’ve decided I won’t be joining Neil on stage for the Leftfield dates this year. I want to thank all the fans for their past support and all the people who will be hearing and seeing the band for the first time.” Neil Barnes has confirmed who will be joining him in front of the legendary Leftfield sound system. Original vocalists Djum Djum, Earl 16 and Cheshire Cat, all of whom played key roles in Leftfield’s classic albums ‘Leftism’ and ‘Rhythm & Stealth’, will be joining Neil for the shows. Completing the live line up will be Adam Wren (keyboards), Jess Mills (vocals) and Sebastian Beresford on drums, replacing Paul Daley.

This movie franchise is a phenomenally huge success. Its also affected teen-age girls in ways that only beautiful looking male vampires can affect teen-age girls. Don’t ever mention the name Robert Pattinson to 14 year old girls, your ears will probably bleed with the screams and screeches that will undoubtedly ensue. Of course, with a huge movie success there has to come the obligatory soundThe sound system returns, but sadly Paul Daley will not. Neil Barnes will undertake these shows without Daley, as he has other recording commitments this summer. Barnes is currently assembling an exciting line-up for these eagerly anticipated shows. Neil Barnes says: “Leftfield Live was an incredible experience for everyone involved. We really pushed the boat out and created something live that reflected how we felt a real live show should be. Everyone who saw it will know what I mean. The opportunity to take the band out again once more with the sound system and some of the original singers and perform the songs again to a whole new audience is an opportunity that I simply couldn’t turn down. The good will surrounding the live show has overwhelmed me. The expectation is tremendous I simply can’t wait to blow everybody away. Literally!” Paul Daley comments: “I’m about to

SPIRITUAL

HOROSCOPES MEADOW FARM Aries (Mar21/Apr20) You find it hard to relax and hard to get time to yourself and you have to deal with too many unexpected events and developments this week. The problem lies in the fact that you want to do your own thing and when the world comes crowding in on you making demands and filling up your days you tend to resent it. Taurus (Apr21/May21) Be careful what you ask for because you’re likely to get it! It’s hard to admit, but you only see what you want to see and there’s no point in trying to be someone or something you’re not. In the long run you’ll get found out. Gemini (May22/June21) Some people simply don’t play fair. It could be up to you to point it out, even if it means a stand-off or a stand up row. Maybe they don’t realise the effect they’re having because they’ve been allowed to get away with behaving like this for so long that it’s become second nature. Cancer (June22/July23) You can talk yourself out of and into anything this week. Solutions to all the little problems that have been getting you down suddenly seem obvious. Leo (July24/Aug23) You start the week feeling fed up and feisty, but try not to lose your cool with people who don’t understand. Instead take time out to recharge your batteries rather than air your feelings as you run the risk of saying something you could regret later. Virgo (Aug24/Sept23) The unusual and exotic attracts you this week. You want to get as far away as possible so if you can head for the hills and take a break go for it now. If that’s a nonstarter spend some time with people from different backgrounds to your own. Libra (Sept24/Oct23) You need to be careful at the start of the week. It’s all too easy to lash out at the people around you especially as they seem to be more temper testing than usual and you feel like they’re not there for you when you really need them. Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) You’ve got your rose tinted glasses planted firmly on the end of your nose this week and your judgment isn’t too good when it comes to handling relationships. No-one is quite as perfect as you like to think and you might feel let down by someone close, but chances are you were expecting a bit too much. Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Early in the week, you wear your heart on your sleeve and there’s no way you can keep your feelings under wraps. The main thing to figure out is how to balance your life to make things run smoothly. Different people demand different things from you, often at the same time. Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) You can ring the changes, especially if you’re looking for a new job or new ways of spending your time. If you’ve been feeling blocked this week will bring you an opportunity to change things for the better. You’ll also feel able to use your skills and talents more productively and positively. Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) Because you have a lightning quick mind you are more easily bored than most people. One thing you can rely on is the potent power of your intuition. You can turn this to your advantage as you work out the best ways to get things done. Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) You seem to have lost all your old zest and vitality this week. Don’t worry; it’ll soon come back so why not take this opportunity to take a back seat for a wee while.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made standard ‘Mirror

Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the local authority get it all?”

Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future Care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a childs divorce, re-marrage or financial difficulties.

SMACKEEʼS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO CLUBLAND For the first time in over ten years club goers in Sheffield were able to enjoy one of the classiest shows around – Smackee performed at Crookes Club to an audience of over 400 in the latest Mercury Roadshow, and wowed the audience with over two hours of West End Musical hits, interspersed with nostalgia from the 50s and 60s. It was as long ago as 1976 when they made their Sheffield debut, performing at the Dial House Club supporting Del Shannon. Since then they have gone on to bigger and better things, regularly performing in large theatres nationwide. There was therefore much anticipation of a great night ahead even before Gary Philips, the compere for the evening, began the show with some great swing numbers, readily admitting

ENGLANDʼS VESTED INTEREST As we go to press on the 2nd June, the big kick-off is less than ten days away. This year, more than any other in living memory, there is a vested interest in England fulfilling their potential and progressing as far as possible in the competition. Perhaps the highly paid prima donnas who will be flying to South Africa (in first class, no doubt) should be forcefully made aware of the importance of the next few weeks for many thousands of the people watching and supporting. Fabio Capello and his squad carry not only the hopes of the millions of football fans, but also responsibility for the continued livelihood of many in the leisure industry. This year potentially the World Cup offers the beleaguered pubs and clubs a chance to claw back some of the trade lost over the last eighteen months of misery and depression, and in many cases a successful world cup run will even mean the difference between the doors closing for good, or the chance to keep on trading in the hope of a good run up to Christmas. Even so, things will not be easy. We hear tales of breweries arbitrarily ramping up the price of a barrel of lager, (and by significant amounts!) whilst simultaneously the same product in tins is slashed

that he was no more than “the warm up” for the night’s main attraction. It is some measure of Smackee’s reputation that the audience included several well-known artistes and a number of agents and committee members from fellow clubs, as well as people who had travelled some considerable distance to enjoy the show. They were not disappointed. Despite arriving very late in the day due to a major motorway delay, Smackee were determined to give the audience a night to remember. They ripped through a medley of numbers from Miss Saigon to open, before a quick costume change led into a blistering rendition of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” A rapid selection of songs by Barry and Laura followed, before Dawn came back on stage with a selection of hits from “Cabaret”, leaving the audience breathless – and only a quarter of the night was gone! Next up was a solo spot from Barry, and the musical “Buddy” with the crowd joining in

enthusiastically. This was followed by a superb acoustic guitar arrangement of “Evita,” with Barry’s vocals accompanied by a tremendous backing from lead guitarist Rob Mackenzie. Rob has been with the band from the age of seventeen, and along with keyboard player Darren Porter laid the whole foundation for the show, creating a superb musical backing for the vocalists. Enter Dawn in a spectacular costume for the highlight of the show so far – an amazing rendition of “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” which had the crowd on its feet in appreciation. It was Laura’s turn for a solo spot now – and “All that Jazz” from Chicago did not disappoint! Barry returned with “Mack the Knife” before

closing the first half with the classic “Coat of Many Colours” from Joseph. Gary opened the second half with another short set, before welcoming back the troupe for a medley from “Les Miserables”“ topped off with Dawn’s wonderful rendition of “I dreamed a dream”. Next up was Phantom – and what a show stopper this was! Laura’s vocals were amazing as she duetted with Barry in the headline song, effortlessly reaching higher and higher up the scale as the song thundered to a crescendo, with the audience cheering long and loud in appreciation of a truly amazing performance. Had this been the finale no-one would have been disappointed – but there was still a lot more to come! Dawn performed the hits of Doris Day - Barry returned for a swing session – and the girls appeared performing part of their Abba tribute. Then came the encore – and

it was obvious that Smackee were performing on the fly, with song after song from their repertoire keeping us entertained for a further fifteen minutes before finally bringing the curtain down with cast and audience dancing away to New York New York – ¬ a fitting end to a truly memorable night of almost three hours of music. A video of Jesus Christ Superstar is now available on YouTube – search “Smackee” to view it, or follow the link on www. mercurynewspaper.co.uk.

for established local singers and performers to showcase themselves through providing the entertainment as support acts.” says Chris Heathcote, the event organiser. He also adds “People like a good night out and expect to be entertained when supporting a friend or family member in the competition, it’s also a great way to provide an audience for established acts to perform to.” The 2010 winner will take home a £3,000 prize fund which includes £1,000 cash, a 5 track recording, a mini photographic portfolio, a purpose built website plus other prizes. This years competition will be held at the Pacific Lounge Bar and Restaurant in Chesterfield

and is supported by The Mercury Newspaper along with Bodyline Photographic Studio, Beefstock Live Sound, Maxine Johnson (vocal coach), Karen Hegarty, Bingham Leisure, Black Eyed Susan Florists and BellaJo Productions. ‘Search For A Star’ is open to anyone over the age of 18. The auditions will take place on Sunday 27th June 2010 and the event runs every Wednesday night throughout July and August. If you think you have what it takes and you want more information on how to enter then please either visit www.pacificloungebarandrestaurant.co.uk or ring the Pacific Lounge Bar on 01246 210700 and ask for Vicki.

Brinsworth Club to catch a band I haven’t seen for over twelve months. It’s fair to say their last visit was not an unqualified success – the singer only managed three songs. However this time he was on form – the name of the band is “Here’s Johnny”. If you haven’t seen them, I can assure you the front man is one of the craziest you will ever see, right up there with Neil Tomlinson and Roy Johnson. He’s not the best singer in the world, but certainly he makes up for that in entertainment and energy. The band opened with “Ever fallen in love” from the Buzzcocks and do material from The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Thin Lizzy, which gives you a flavour of their musical style, before finish-

ing with the fabulous “Pretty Vacant” from the Sex Pistols, all with Johnny jumping about, singing laid out on the floor and licking the speakers while singing the Stones. All in all it’s a fabulous entertainment package and well done. Also after covering karaoke last week, I took the family to the coast on Bank Holiday Monday. Only 2 venues had live acts, the rest resorting to the wonderful thing, confirming my editorial was spot on. Having said that, the people performing were obviously enjoying themselves, but the two venues with live acts on were noticeably busier. As I said last week, you pay your money and take your choice!

Here at the Mercury we have some exciting news - Smackee have agreed to return on Friday 10th December, performing a special Christmas show which they are creating especially for the night. Tickets are now on sale on the Mercury Hotline – 01142 763701 – but hurry – we have already sold over 200 following the show on Friday night!

ARE YOU A FOODIE? MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas

There are loads of things going on this week in support of the Sheffield Food Festival. Reggae performer and creator of the now famous ‘Reggae Reggae’ sauce, Levi Roots is in the city to mark the launch of another season of Wednesday Night Live, there’s a chance to make your own sausages at Greave House Farm, Stocksbridge on Sunday, and even a nightly cocktail master class at 23 Bar and Restaurant. We’re also looking to compile our own Magic South Yorkshire People’s Cook Book as well and would love to hear about your own recipes, whether they’re tried and tested family secrets, or perhaps a result of your experiments in the kitchen. Just head to our website at www.magicam.co.uk, follow the link and you could even win a prize. On a similar note last week on the Breakfast Show, I mentioned an interesting statistic. Heinz found that we eat more baked beans here in the UK than the rest of the world three times over. Are you a fan? We heard about some great dishes from listeners – Sue in Bolton on Dearne puts them in her Chilli Con Carne rather than kidney beans, Big Al in Sheffield eats them with Marmite and an Oxo cube and Terry used to enjoy baked bean and gravy sandwiches. Whereas I’m not the biggest fan myself, I do enjoy the odd baked beans on toast, but they can’t be too watery in texture for me, and one of my friends did turn my stomach once by telling me she enjoys mashed baked beans. There’s more fun, news and of course the best of the 60s, 70s and more with me on the Breakfast Show every weekday morning between 6 and 10am, and listen next week to find out how you could be off to see the newly reformed Blondie who are playing in Sheffield later in the month.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally May Elders’ Congress Help Shape the Hilary Taylor-Firth, Sheffield 50+ Communications Officer

This month Congress was pleased to welcome two speakers, who in their different ways, were of immediate interest to everybody. On our last Older People’s page, we passed on a lot of information from the first presentation to Congress about making sure we were receiving all the benefits we may be entitled to. For the second very timely presentation we welcomed Sheffield City Council’s Tim Wright from the Safer and Sustainable Communities Support Team about the work the City Council is doing to prevent violent extremism in Sheffield. Using opportunities created by the national strategy for reducing the risk of international terrorism, Sheffield has developed its own version; tailored to meet the particular needs of Sheffield it focuses on all forms of extremism. Working in partnership with the statutory and the voluntary, faith and community sectors it is helping to promote stronger communities and make sure that there are open and democratic ways of addressing grievances, which otherwise can be used by extremists. By creating an environment, where there is mutual respect and appreciation of the similarities and differences that make people unique, Tim’s team are trying to develop ways locally to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting violent extremists. The team encourages activities and initiatives which challenge violent extremist ideology and support mainstream voices, which help to disrupt those who promote violent extremism and support those individuals who are being targeted and recruited to its cause So far there is an advisory group and ongoing engagement work, some research into attitudes and solutions, a toolkit for schools and some small grants available. In the future they will seek to commission priority activities and to provide more training and awareness. It was reassuring to hear of the positive way that the City Council is working to help keep our city safe. If you have any concerns you can contact Tim Wright by email: Tim.wright@sheffield.gov.uk

Sheffield of the Future Sheffielders are being encouraged to have their say on the shape of Sheffield. Not it’s physical shape of course but the way the city will look and feel in years to come. The Sheffield Development Framework or ‘SDF’ states how the city should develop in the future. It acts as the backbone to all planning and development across Sheffield outlining what can be built and where. The Council is gearing up to ask people their views on parts of the draft SDF during the summer. Cllr Penny Baker Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Planning at Sheffield City Council said: “We know that Sheffield people are the experts in their local area. You know your streets and the places you spend your time in better than anyone else. This is your chance to share your views on the future of the city.” The SDF covers the whole of Sheffield. It is made up of a group of documents and a map. The Council will be consulting over the summer on the ‘City Policies and Sites’ document and the ‘Proposals Map’. The ‘City Policies and Sites’ document will inform future planning decisions. It also identifies sites for new development. The ‘Proposals Map’ shows how these proposals will affect different areas. To find out more visit www.sheffield. gov.uk/sdfconsult - you will find information on where to see the document and map, how to share your views and details of SDF events. You can also email sdf@sheffield.gov.uk or call the SDF hotline (0114) 2053075

PERSONAL INJURY

Solicitor Chris Middleton of Sheffield Injury Lawyers, Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors new accident claims service, answers questions on Personal Injury Compensation Claims. What will it cost me to claim and what does ‘no win no fee’ mean? You will not pay any legal fees, win or lose. If we win you will keep 100% of your compensation, with no deductions. If your claim is unsuccessful we will not charge you any legal fees for the work carried out. How do you get paid? When we win a claim for compensation the party at fault, or their insurers, has to pay our legal fees. If we lose, we do not get paid. Will I have to go to court? The vast majority of cases never get to court. Most cases are settled out of court by negotiation between your solicitor and the party at fault. In the unlikely event that your case does go to a court hearing, an experienced solicitor will support you throughout the whole process. What can I claim for and how much compensation will I receive? The circumstances of each accident are different and the amount of compensation will depend on a number of factors. Compensation payments are generally made up of two parts; General damages and Special damages. General damages are commonly paid for what is known as pain and suffering. The amount paid under this element will depend on the type and severity of the injury suffered, how long you suffered for, and whether or not you have any ongoing problems associated with the injury. Special damages is a payment which is made to cover your out of pocket expenses such as loss of earnings, medical expenses, travel expenses, etc. I’m not sure if I can make a claim? If you have suffered an injury and it was not your fault, and it can be proven that someone else had been negligent, you should be able to make a claim. Our experts will identify who is responsible for the accident and pursue a claim for compensation against them. If you are unsure about whether you have a valid claim you can speak to us in confidence and we will assess your accident and tell you if you have a valid claim for compensation. This service is free of charge. For further advice call 0114 248 4890 or visit www.sheffieldinjurylawyers.co.uk to find your local branch.

I took a trip up to Bennetts of Sheffield this week to meet MD Harry Peck. Mail order and internet shopping is not something I’ve really looked into before, but it’s a huge operation they have running right in the heart of Sheffield which dispatches all over Europe and the UK. Harry was kind enough to show me around, describe the processes used to get 5-10,000 catalogues a week through the door and deal with the corresponding orders, as well as show me some of the stock and the procurement involved. Bennetts use up to 320,000 individual sheets of paper per week supplied on pallets weighing in at ¾ of a tonne each to provide a wide variety of mail order directories covering every angling discipline. I met many of the 30 staff members during the day, (including Harry’s dog asleep under the boardroom table) and had each stage of the retail process carefully explained to me. At Bennetts, everything is done in house; each item is photographed, descriptions written and layout configured before it goes to print. During the process, all folding trimming and stapling is done by one machine, and then the completed publications are automatically bagged and computer printed labels affixed before they are sent to subscribers. They even do all the marketing, publicity and advertising to be featured in the mainstream angling media and maintain a fantastic website! STARTER’S ORDERS HORSE RACING by Timelord

It’s Derby week once more and the world famous Epsom Downs will again see the crowds thronging to witness top class racing at this unique switchback venue. This year could be a “result” for the bookies with all three favourites in the three Group 1 races over the mile and a half being turned over. Hopefully it will also turn out to be a “result” for this column as we continue with the “value bet” approach. In the Derby I reckon that Rewilding (best current price 11/1) can kick-start the fledgling career of Mahmood Al Zarooni in the UK by outclassing his rivals and lifting the Derby. Make no mistake though it will not be easy with Aidan O’Brien fielding a possible team of three, Jan Vermeer, Cape Blanco and Midas Touch. The “stiff” St Nicholas Abbey is ruled out dealing a body blow to ante post punters. Of his trio I like the unbeaten Cape Blanco (best current price 10/1) as he put in a good run in the Dante, looking every inch as if he would get further than the 10.5 furlongs of that race and, if it is true of any horse in the line-up, it is just remotely possible that this one really doesn’t know the meaning of the word defeat. Jan Vermeer (best current price 15/8) already has a Group 1 victory to his name and won a Group 3 race well over 10 furlongs at the Curragh on his recent return to action so he is a worthy favourite now that the race is shaping up. I think that the race really revolves around these three and, though there are other fancied runners, I cannot see any of the others having the class to trouble them. Why have I chosen Rewilding? Well his Prix Noailles second to Planteur is beginning to look pretty good form and the race time of 2m 12.04s on soft going compares very favourably with Cape Blanco’s 2m

STEELERS ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle

Ervins’ Is The One The Sheffield Steelers last week announced the signing of their new first-string netminder, Ervins Mustukovs, the club’s first ever Latvian player. He was the Latvian national team’s back-up netminder at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and has played starting netminder for his country at both U18 and U20 levels. “There are times you come across a player and you get a gut feeling that this guy is going to be a

6.7s on good to firm in the Dante and Jan Vermeer’s 2m 11.38s in the Gallinule Stakes, once going allowances are taken into account. Rewilding then easily won a Listed race at Goodwood by four lengths to underscore the value of the French form. Incidentally, I strongly fancy Planteur for the French Derby in a couple of weeks time, so keep an eye out for him. In the Oaks Gertrude Bell (current best price 14/1) can outshine Aviate (9/2) and Akdarena (10/1) to land first prize. Admittedly she does need to step up a little to do so but she has already won the Cheshire Oaks and looked ready made for the slight step up in distance of the classic. She is with a first rate handler in John Gosden and rates a decent each way value selection. Aviate may prove to be a tough nut to crack as she is unbeaten so far in her career and came with a withering late run to beat my selection, Gold Bubbles, in the Musidora at York, also looking as though she would get further. Akdarena has won her last two races, a Listed and a Group 3 (by seven lengths no less), also beating another of my selections, Indiana Gal, in the process. My 1-2-3 order would be Gertrude Bell, Akdarena and Aviate. In the older horses’ version of the classics, the Coronation Cup, Mick Channon’s Youmzain can gain compensation for narrow defeats in the last two renewals of this race. Beaten by ¾ of a length by Soldier of Fortune in 2008 he was agonisingly closer last year when beaten a nose by Ask. He has secondplaced in three consecutive Arc De Triomphes and is a real battler and a thoroughly likeable individual. In my view he has been unlucky in his career so far and it would come as no surprise if this was to be his year – possibly his last before being shipped off to stud. Sariska will not be easy to beat, nor will Fame and Glory, but these two can “make the market” for Youmzain to be real good value.

In the 4.50, immediately after the Oaks, Kaptain Kirkup can continue his good run and provide us with another success following his win for us at York. Yaa Wayl and Dherghaam are the dangers but both are also declared for the last race on the card where Yaa Wayl looks to hold a decent chance. Selections for the full meeting at

star and that’s the feeling I get with him.” Head Coach Dave Matsos said, “I’ve taken references from people in Europe and North American, where Ervins has played as well and I’ve been told nothing but great things...You don’t go to the Olympics if you’re a poor goalie, this guy is a risk but he is a real find, a star in the making and a player our fans will get behind.” Mustukovs is a gamble for the Steelers, but has the potential to be a starting goalie in the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League, Russia) and a star in the making, a potential he is sure to realise in Sheffield, according to Matsos.

following unpaid sponsorship payments from an un-named sponsor from the 2008-09 season which left the company in “...an untenable position”. Fans have been reassured that all season ticket money already paid for the 2010-11 season is safe, and that season tickets will be honoured. The club’s press release ended “The club will continue to keep all supporters fully advised of all the exciting changes that will be happening, both on and off the ice. This is a fresh start for everyone.” Season Ticket application forms are available from the Steelers office at Sheffield Arena, call in to Entrance B or phone (0114 242 35 35) for further details. Last Thursday the Sheffield Steelers Supporters Club held their Annual General Meeting at Outo Kumpu Sports and Social Club. Full details of the newly elected committee members can be found on their website, www. thesssc.co.uk.

Back-Office Blow for Steelers In off-ice news Steelers fans were rocked last week by reports that, once again, an associated company has hit financial problems. Yorkshire Sports Ltd, the operating company behind the Sheffield Steelers, will go into liquidation later this week,

SHEFFIELD EAGLES RUGBY LEAGUE by Jim Collins A drop goal in the final seconds ended ended Eagles four-match winning run and gave Keighley their third win of the season. The Eagles had battled back into the game with three second half tries but poor discipline and erratic ball handling kept Keighley in the game. The Eagles had to settle for a bonus point which lifted them above Widnes Viking to fifth in the Championship but they have played more games than their main play-off rivals. The Cougars had to thank scrumhalf Danny Jones who scored a try, kicked six goals and the vital drop goal for their win. Keighley took an early lead with a penalty from Jones but the Eagles came back with a try from loose forward Joe Hirst from Trevor Exton’s pass. The Eagles doubled their lead as Menzie Yere used pure strength to get the touchdown. Stringer was unable to add either conversion with touchline kicks. Keighley hit back and a chip kick by Jones bounced off an Eagles player and the scrum-half gratefully caught the ball and went over for the try before adding the goal. The Cougars took the lead with a try from James Hutchinson and a Jones goal. A fumble by an Eagles player following a scrum in front of their posts saw Tom Sheldrake nipping in to pick up the ball and claim the try. Jones added the goal for the Cougars to lead 20-8 at half-time. The second half was a totally different story as the Eagles came back with three tries in a sixminute spell with Michael Haley the game’s outstanding forward leading the charge. Exton got the first score of the half following a Haley break. Matty Brooks set up the next for Sam Barlow with Stringer kicking a goal, his only conversion of the night. An Exton break followed by an

overhead inside pass from Danny Mills gave Brendon Lindsay a touchdown and the stand-off added the goal to put the Eagles ahead at 24-20. Keighley levelled with two penalties from Jones either side of Missi Taulapapa being denied a try for a double movement. It was down to drop goals and Matty Brooks missed one for the Eagles and Jones for Keighley until in the final 30 seconds Jones put over a kick to claim the win. Ronnie praise for Millers despite defeat LOCAL FOOTBALL www.themillers.co.uk

Ronnie Moore couldn’t hide his disappointment at the full time whistle after Rotherham United fell at the final hurdle after a 3-2 defeat against Dagenham and Redbridge. In a pulsating game that swung one way and then another the Millers came up just short, despite showing courage and character to come from behind on two occasions. “It was a horrible feeling,” said Ronnie after the game. “The players tried and tried and it was end to end stuff but when you defend like that you are not going to win the game. We have had six out of seven clean sheets but we couldn’t do it today. I feel for the players because they gave everything. “It is soul destroying to be honest. I have come here before and won and I have lost here. I went through so many emotions and it is a feeling that I don’t want to have again. It’s frustrating when you bring such a wonderful crowd here. When you get a minute you think could we have done anything better, and yes we could have defended better but that has been our problem, the inconsistencies.” Ryan Taylor was the Millers man of the match on the day after an excellent performance which was capped by two goals. “I feel for Ryan Taylor because he was brilliant on the day,” added Ronnie. “He worked his socks off all day and got us back into it. Ryan has bossed it, he chased things and he got the goals but for all the fine attacking play you need to be right at the back and it is a shame that they scored from two set pieces. At 2-2 we had one or two little chances but it wasn’t to be.

left and fired in an excellent strike past Warrington from the angle of the box. Harrison could have, once again, equalised almost immediately, but his effort from inside the six yard box went over the bar. Rotherham did respond with a second equalizer when Taylor coolly brought the ball down inside the box and stabbed it beyond Tony Roberts on 61 minutes. Dagenham took the lead for a third and final time on 70 minutes when Nurse fired in a deflected shot after the Rotherham defence failed to clear a corner properly. The shot may have been going wide, but a wicked deflection off Ellison ensured that it ended up in the back of the net. During the final twenty minutes of the game Rotherham looked very capable of taking the game into extra time, including when Fenton saw his header go just wide deep into injury time, but ultimately the faithful Millers following, numbering in excess of 15,000 fans, were to be disappointed. Sadly, Rotherham will not have the welcome headache of accommodating the visiting fans of Sheffield Wednesday next season. However, tickets for games against the Owls, Southampton and Charlton Athletic will be at a premium for next seasons games held at Dagenham. Their ground has the longest name in the football league (The London Borough of Dagenham and Barking Stadium), but at a capacity of 6,007, where Dagenham averaged just 2,088 spectators in the 200910 campaign, they have one of the smallest ground capacities in the country and the smallest in League One.

Irvine the man, says Gray

Page 39

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Veteran star Michael Gray has reflected fondly on his time with the Owls and insists Alan Irvine is the right man to take the club forward. Gray hung up his boots following the 2009/10 campaign, towards the end of which the former England international was a fringe player under manager Irvine. But Gray still backs the Owls

boss to lead his team back to the Championship at the first attempt following relegation on the final day against Crystal Palace. He said: “it was tough towards the end and I didn’t play the last ten or 12 games of the season, which I found really hard. But overall, I totally enjoyed my time at Sheffield Wednesday, which is a massive club with a first class manager in charge who has some tremendous coaches with him as well. “I only worked with him for a short period of time but I got to know him really well and how he works. He is definitely the right

man for the job and like everybody else, I’m hoping he can lead Wednesday back at the first time of asking.” Gray signed off by issuing his thanks to Wednesdayites, who made his 18-month stay at Hillsborough ‘a fantastic experience’. He added:”I had a really good rapport with the fans, they were great to me wherever I went around the city and, of course, on matchdays as well. “It was a fantastic experience for me at Sheffield Wednesday, I’m grateful for that, and I will be certainly be coming back to watch some games next season.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Increasing transfer speculation about potential ins and outs at Bramall Lane will not be allowed to deter the Club from pursuing its intention of looking to secure the futures of existing players and exercising sensible caution. In an ideal world Manager Kevin Blackwell and Chief Executive Trevor Birch, tasked with reshaping the squad over the summer, would be keen to finish the job by the time pre-season starts, but are realistic and aware that some targets won’t declare their hands early until having looked at all their options. In the interim they are holding talks with players and agents,

alongside continuing negotiations with those whose Lane contracts are due to expire. Trevor Birch says: “We have put an improved offer to Nick Montgomery and are waiting on his response, whilst negotiations with Stephen Quinn continue following an offer we have made him. “Gary Naysmith is considering the new deal on the table here and we are quietly confident that Richard Cresswell will agree to sign his extended contract offer.” Whilst negotiations with Maltese striker Daniel Bogdanovic are expected to be concluded successfully Trevor Birch believes that player movement between clubs will not be as brisk as some might expect: “I think it will be another difficult year for clubs generally; difficult for everybody other than those at the very top. You do not want to jeopardise your future so you try to avoid being a Portsmouth, Hull

or Palace - or even Preston by the sound of it. You can see how fragile it all is and that applies everywhere outside of the limitless funds of the top PL clubs. “We have a budget in mind that we want to work to but it depends on who becomes available. Then we will make judgement calls including on any offers we might receive - and will look at each situation as it arises. “I appreciate that some of our supporters become restless at what they perceive to be a lack of transfer activity but I assure them that there are plenty of discussions going on behind the scenes. It is a time when you have to remain calm and focused. “It is also a time when speculation is rife about who might be going where but it’s impossible to give a blow by blow commentary and our policy will always be to not comment until there is something definite to confirm.”

Head Groundsman, Glen Nortcliffe, explains: “What we are doing this summer is standard procedure to give us the best possible chance of the pitch being in excellent condition throughout next season. “The top 15mm of grass is being taken off, the surface will be relevelled and then 30 tons of sand laid before the pitch is re-seeded. We’ve also embedded a sprinkler system under the pitch that will enable us to water the pitch just before and at half-time on matchdays. “We will work on it throughout steal to a midfield that may soon lose its oldest talisman in Nick Montgomery. LW: Hameur Bouazza (Blackpool) – Has always impressed against the Blades whether in a Watford or Blackpool shirt, but you would imagine may struggle to hold down a Premier League starting berth. ST: Daniel Bogdanovic (Barnsley) – Another player we have been strongly linked to and are poised to unveil as our first major

the summer ready, for the start of the Championship season in early August.”

The patience game

Pitch work begins

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Renovation work on United’s Bramall Lane pitch began on Friday morning. Sheffield Eagles played their live Sky Sports encounter against Keighley Cougars on Thursday night - the last of 11 fixtures at the Lane, including many local league cup finals, since United’s Championship campaign came to an end.

The footballing scrap heap FANS VIEWPOINT by Jon Warburton

The state of finances in football at the moment means that a large number of Championship players look set to be dumped on the footballing scrap heap as their contracts come to an end. This is my pick of the bunch. GK: Richard Wright (Ipswich) – A former England international keeper, who despite being slightly prone to error, surely has a couple of years Championship football left in him. RB: Chris Riggott (Middlesborough) – Was tipped for big things as a youngster, although has slightly lost his way of late due to prolonged injuries. Wages may prove a stumbling block. CB: Jay DeMerit (Watford) – A solid, no nonsense centre back who should be starring for his native USA in the World Cup this summer. Would make an uncompromising partnership with Chris Morgan. CB: Youl Mawene (Preston) – Slightly more cultured defender who has the ability to command games better than most in this division. A tendency towards inconsistency would maybe be an issue. LB: Stephen Crainey (Blackpool) – Another player with experience of big games from his Celtic days, but fell down the league structure. His contract could be extended after Blackpool’s promotion but a replacement may be sought. RW: Akos Buzsaky (QPR) – Dimunitive, audacious and a potential match winner can all describe this little Hungarian, who considering QPR’s constant state of flux could be surplus to requirements. CM: Leon Britton (Swansea) – A player who we have already been linked with in recent weeks, but is considering Premier League offers. Has that much needed ability to control the tempo of a game. CM: Gavin Rae (Cardiff) – In contrast to the finesse of Britton, this fiery Scot could add some

signing. Scored plenty of goals for Barnsley in his languid Berbatovlike style. ST: Gylfi Sigurdsson (Reading) – The jewel of the list who won Reading’s Player of the Season last term. Unfortunately you can’t see how the Royals will not renew his contract. I think it’s fair to say that without paying anything out in transfer fees, that team would compete strongly at this level.

Victoria

• The Victoria is an important local pub which is known throughout Sheffield as the Roundhouse, due to its distinctive ‘tower’ feature at one end, making a highly visible local landmark in the busy Heeley district of Sheffield. • It has great potential to be the heart-of-the-community local sports pub of its heyday and features separate lounge, snug, tap and large, central bar area where locals can mix and match as they like. • Available on Punch Partnership’s new Capital Builder Scheme giving opportunity for a new landlord into the industry to take on this business with limited funding.

White Horse Inn

• The White Horse is a big pub with two distinct bars and trading areas, each with its own separate external door. The Tap and Games room to the right is currently the main trading room whilst the Lounge, through the left hand door, tends to be used at weekends and for parties. The Lounge is further divided into two areas with a stage and dance floor on the raised area to the rear. • Potential for a good food offer • Available on Punch Partnership’s new Capital Builder Scheme giving opportunity for a new landlord into the industry to take on this business with limited funding.
