COPLEY’S COLUMN The results are in and the nation now knows the identity of the winner of Britains Got Talent, and Spelbound were worthy winners. Having some experience, judging the heats of Stephanie King’s Stars of the Future , I know how difficult it can be, and I would not have liked the unenviable task of selecting the winner, so leaving it to the public vote was the best option. I personally thought that Paul the impressionist was a certainty to get into the last three. The dancing dog was amazing, giving me fanciful thoughts of entering next year with one of my two Lhassa Apso dogs. However, there is not a chance as Henry, at four years old, has only one talent which is barking, and Rosie, the puppy would probably defacate on the stage. The standard this year has been exceptionally high, and I thought the fifth semi-final was nearly as good as the final. The country is really getting into the mood for the World Cup, except unfortunately my girlfriend who is not at all interested, notwithstanding that her next door neighbour is the mother of former Arsenal, Leeds and England goalkeeper, John Lukic and her mothers’ next door neighbour is the mother in law of top football commentator, John Motson.
Thankfully, we both have more than one television in our respective houses. Kevin Blackwell, the manager of Sheffield United, regrettably when coaching his players, does not teach loyalty. I seriously felt sorry for the club, by the treatment they have received from Gary Naysmith, paying his wages (he is apparently one of the higher earners in the club), for the past twelve months whilst he has been injured, and being repaid by him leaving the club and signing for Huddersfield. They have received a double whammy now that Paddy Kenny has implemented a clause in his contract and has signed for Neil Warnock at Queens Park Rangers for a ridiculously low price of £750,000. This is after the club stood by him all through his nine months drug ban, buying cough mixture containing the banned drug ephedrine. Had United not stood by him, his football career would have been over. The pointless murders of twelve innocent members of the public in Cumbria has shocked the nation, bringing back memories of similar tragedies in Dunblaine and Hungerford. Why on earth these unhinged assassins, when they tire of life have to take others with them is beyond me,
they should just turn the gun on themselves. The heartache caused is incalcuable. I attended the funeral this week of Tony Baines, former landlord of he Greyhound in Dronfield, and Shepley Spitfire in Totley, before settling in at the Fitzwilliam Arms in Rotherham, who was tragically killed in an accident in Sheffield town centre. The funeral was conducted by a member of the Humanist Society, where the theme is to celebrate the life of, rather than mourn the death of the person involved. There were no hymns, but some Frank Sinatra as well as the whole congregation singing ‘Delilah’, Tony was a great guy evidenced by the huge turnout, which filled the chapel with twice as many outside. No expense was spared celebrating the birthday of Caron, my girlfriend, starting with a fantastic meal at the Curry Inn at the Greyhound in Dronfield before going to a fabulous pub, the Miners’ Arms in Hundall, just outside Dronfield, where my close pal Steve Birks was appearing as Neirly Diamond. Dave, the landlord, made us really welcome, and was incredibly generous. We will certainly call again.
extremely talented finalists; Christopher Stone, Connected, Janey Cutler, Kieran Gaffney, Liam McNally, Paul Burling, Tina & Chandi, Tobias Mead and Twist & Pulse to complete our best line-up of live British talent ever! Paddy McGuinness will host the Britain’s Got Talent Live Tour, which kicks off in Manchester on Saturday 19th June. This year’s tour is set to be even bigger and better than previous years with live show feed on big screens for the first time ever, plus more excitement, adrenalin and originality than ever. Tickets for Britain’s Got Talent Live at Sheffield Arena on Tuesday 29th June, priced £32.50 (booking fee may apply), are available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or book online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk
ONCE IN A LIFETIME The 2010 Once In A Lifetime Tour comes to Sheffield Arena. The tour brings together four of the biggest acts of the seventies. The Osmonds, David Essex, Leo Sayer and Les McKeown’s Legendary Bay City Rollers on one stage make this tour a truly one-off experience. THE OSMONDS The Osmonds, pop heartthrobs in the 1970’s, features original lead vocalist Merrill alongside brothers Wayne, Jay and Jimmy (who more recently appeared in ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ and in the West End in both Chicago and Grease last year). The Osmonds have sold over 77 million records and their concert career parallels that of their recording success! The bands hits include two No 1’s – ‘Love Me For A Reason’ and ‘Crazy Horses’ – other Top Ten Hits include ‘Going Home’, ‘Let Me In’, and ‘The Proud One’. DAVID ESSEX From hit records to hit musicals David Essex OBE has had one of the most enduring careers in music - lasting over 30 years to date. David has starred in the musicals Godspell, Evita and Mutiny which he also wrote. His breadth of hits include two No 1’s – ‘Gonna Make U A Star’ and ‘Hold Me Close’ -other top ten hits include ‘Rock On’, ‘Lamplight’, ‘Stardust’, ‘Oh What A Circus’, ‘Brave New World’, ‘Silver Dream Machine’ and ‘A Winter’s Tale’. LEO SAYER With a career spanning four decades and hits topping both side of the Atlantic – singer songwriter Leo Sayer needs no introduction. Discovered by David Courtney and
originally managed by Adam Faith, he launched his career I a pierrot style outfit and make-up with the song ‘The Show Must Go On’ (No 2). His biggest success came in 1977 with “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” (US No1 and won him a Grammy and which later went onto feature in the massive box office film ‘Charlies Angels’), as well as the romantic ballad, “When I Need You” (1977), which reached number one in both the UK and U.S. In 2006, he made a surprise return to number one in the UK Singles Chart, with Meck’s remix of “Thunder In My Heart”. Sayer has appeared in various TV shows including The Muppet Show, The Wiggles and Celebrity Big Brother UK in 2007. LES MCKEOWN’S LEGENDARY BAY CITY ROLLERS The Bay City Rollers, featuring lead singer Les McKeown, were an international Supergroup. Dubbed Rollermania by the press, this kind of mass hysteria hadn’t been seen since The Beatles. The Bay City Rollers notched up nine UK top ten hits including ‘Keep On Dancing’, ‘Remember (Sha-La-La)’, ‘Shang-A-Lang’, ‘Summer Love Sensation’, ‘All Of Me Loves All Of You’, ‘Money Honey’ and ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’ plus two number ones ‘Bye Bye Baby’ and ‘Give A Little Love’. Tickets are priced £36.50. Tickets for Once In A Lifetime Tour 2010 at Sheffield Arena on Wednesday 30th June are available online through this web site at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk, through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or in person at the Sheffield Arena Box Office.

Weekly Wit
IN THE WAITING ROOM I was sitting in the waiting room of the hospital after my wife had gone into labour and the nurse walked out and said to the man sitting next to me, “Congratulations sir, you’re the new father of twins!” The man replied, “How about that, I work for the Doublemint Chewing Gum Company.” The man then followed the woman to his wife’s room. About an hour later, the same nurse entered the waiting room and announced that Mr. Smith’s wife has just had triplets. Mr. Smith stood up and said, “Well, how do ya like that, I work for the 3M Company.” The gentleman that was sitting next to me then got up and started to leave. When I asked him why he was leaving, he remarked, “I think I need a breath of fresh air.” The man continued, “I work for 7-UP.” AN OLD COUPLE AT THE DOCTORS An old couple go to the doctor. The old man goes first to have his physical. When the doctor is done with him, he sends the old man back into the waiting room and calls the old woman in. The doctor tells her, “Before we proceed with the examination, I would like to talk to you about your husband first.” The old woman says, “Oh, no, it’s his heart. I told him to lay off the eggs.” The doctor says, “Well, I asked your husband how he is feeling and he told me he felt great. He said that when he got up to go to the bathroom, he opened the door and God turned the light on for him. When he was done, he would shut the door and God would turn the light out for him.” The old woman responded, “Damn it, he’s peeing in the fridge again!” CAN YOU GET MARRIED IN HEAVEN? On their way to get married, a young Catholic couple is involved in a fatal car accident. The couple find themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven. While waiting, they begin to wonder: Could they possibly get married in Heaven? When St. Peter showed up, they asked him. St. Peter said, ‘I don’t know. This is the first time anyone has asked. Let me go find out,’ and he leaves. The couple sat and waited, and waited. Two months passed and the couple are still waiting. As they waited, they discussed that if they were allowed to get married in Heaven, what was the eternal aspect of it all. ‘What if it doesn’t work?’ they wondered, ‘Are we stuck together forever?’ After yet another month, St. Peter finally returns, looking somewhat bedraggled. ‘Yes,’ he informs the couple, ‘you can get married in Heaven.’ ‘Great!’ said the couple, ‘But we were just wondering, what if things don’t work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?’ St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slammed his clipboard onto the ground. ‘What’s wrong?’ asked the frightened couple. ‘OH, COME ON!’, St. Peter shouted, ‘It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it’ll take me to find a Lawyer?!’

BLONDIE RETURN SKIN UP! Sheffield plays host to one of the most Iconic bands in the music industry when Blondie explode onto the O2 Academy stage on the 17th. Inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, Blondie emerged as the great pop icons of New York’s celebrated late ‘70s new wave punk scene by defying easy categorisation. They wrote great rock hooks and brilliant, ironic lyrics. They had the hippest clothes and the coolest hair. Debbie Harry went from the pages of Punk magazine to being on the cover of just about every mainstream publication on the news-stands. The original Blondie was formed in 1974 by art student/ guitarist Chris Stein and ex-folkie and ex-Max’s Kansas City waitress, vocalist/songwriter Deborah Harry. Drummer Clem Burke and keyboard player Jimmy Destri joined in 1975. The band played the fabled New York downtown circuit of CBGB’s, Max’s Kansas City and Mothers, amassing a major following before recording their first album Blondie in 1976 for the Private Stock label. It was released in 1977 and was well received as the band toured in support of Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Hit after hit soon followed, Picture This, Hanging on the Telephone, Heart of Glass, Sunday Girl, Atomic, Call Me, The Tide Is High, the list is endless and all of them classics, I guarantee at least one of them will be playing somewhere on a radio station as you read this. In 1982, the single “Island of Lost Souls,” turned out to be their final U.S. hit before Chris was taken ill by a rare and often fatal genetic disease, which led to a sudden hiatus for the group. Debbie went on to appear in numerous films and plays and to create music in various contexts. In recent years she has been the featured vocalist of the Jazz Passengers. Jimmy left music for a while to become a family man and contractor. Chris produced various bands in New York. Clem continued to record and tour with top acts. Sixteen years later the band members were used to being apart,
but miraculously they were still talking. The friendships were still there. The doors were ajar. Responding to a request, they reformed to play a concert and had so much fun and found so much chemistry remaining that they decided to try to make some new music. That worked out so well that they re-formed and made a new album, No Exit, the seventh Blondie studio album. It was an auspicious return, highlighted by the hit “Maria,” which went to be No1 in 14 countries! In 2008, EMI celebrated the 30-year anniversary of Blondie’s Parallel Lines with a re-release of the iconic album that gave the band their first No1 hit in the U.S., “Heart of Glass,” and went on to sell over 20 million copies - an extraordinary feat achieved only by an elite club of artists. The timeless band that broke records and crossed boundaries with their unique style and music are on the road again for a tour that will take them across the U.S. and Europe. Debbie is rightfully proud of the band’s hard work and accolades: “The guys have gotten really good at what they do. I mean, they always were good players and songwriters, but I think now you could say they’re accomplished.” ……Don’t miss this one! Skin are back with a bang. The band prepare for the release of a new album this year and arrive in Sheffield with a show at the O2 Academy on the 19th. Skin were formed in the early 1990s Originally called Taste, they went through a number of names (Obsession, Bad For Good, Phoenix) as they played a smattering of small club dates throughout 1992. The band showed enough quality on these dates to be offered a management deal with Sanctuary Management, who also handled Iron Maiden and, ultimately, a record deal with Parlophone. Through Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, the band came to the attention of noted American producer Keith Olsen who offered to produce their debut at his ‘Goodnight LA’ Studio. Prior to the release of the album, the band finally decided upon the name Skin (someone had written it down on a wall) and embarked upon a 14 date UK tour supporting Little Angels. Another support tour, this time with Thunder helped swell their growing fan base and, in 1993, they released their debut single The Skin Up EP. 1995 saw Skin consolidating their fan base by recording and releasing Live at the Borderline. A very limited edition CD of classic rock cover versions given away free with Kerrang! Magazine, only 50 were available and it has become one of the most prized collector’s items among Skin fans although a Japanese import version was released shortly after. In order to capitalise upon their appearance supporting Bon Jovi, the band also recorded and released Take Me Down to the River as a double CD along with some of the Borderline cuts. The Bon Jovi appearance marked a high and low point in the career of Skin. A gig that would potentially give excellent exposure was marred by a fault with the band equipment as a voltage converter was incorrectly installed to USA settings by a stage tech, which resulted in blowing the guitar amp and the hammond organ. (Hope they sacked the roadie!) Neither the second

One of our very best exponents of dance music, along with (of course) The Prodigy and probably Basement Jaxx and Fatboy Slim. This duo has earned our respect over the years for bringing out some banging tunes. Tracks such as ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ and ‘Hey Boy, Hey Girl’ are still played today across virtually all genre’s of clubs, radio and music television. The album opener ‘Snow’ has a kind of Morse code opening to it that reminds me very much of Kraftwerks ‘Radioactivity’ (no bad thing there I say). Then tracks such as ‘Escape Velocity’ (a twelve minute epic) and ‘Another World’ are lush sounding landscapes of songs that are ethereal in parts but can also bang out of the speakers at you. The only real classic sounding Chemical Brothers song is ‘Horse Power’ which is a harsh up-tempo electronic stabbing monster of a track that harks back to their most classic moments such as ‘Galvanize’. The single from the album is ‘Swoon’. It starts with an electronic guitar sound that isn’t dissimilar to Pendulum and then builds and builds into a crescendo of warm synths. I love it! It may not be typical of The Chemical Brothers but this should go down in history as one of their classics. Whether it will work on club dancefloors I’m not sure, but where it will be massive is at festivals. The whole album is just perfect for that kind of environment. In fact it’d be perfect at around 2am on a hot beach with a few thousand people. That would be an experience. For me, this is the best and most complete album they’ve ever done. It may not be 100% classic Chemical Brothers, but bands need to move forward and this has done that brilliantly. It oozes class and stampedes all over any competition these guys may have. I urge you to check it out, its one of the best albums of 2010 so far.
We all know about Eminem, so I won’t harp on about his career thus far. Except to mention that I wasn’t overly keen on his last album ‘Relapse’. It had a lot of humour in it (that’s not innit……….do you like what I did there!) But for me a tad too much. I prefer Eminem when it’s serious, when it kinda makes me feel uneasy. This is the new single from his new album ‘Recovery’ which is promised to be a much more serious affair. As you may or may not know, I’m not an overly keen lover of rap. But Eminem is able to take it to another level. For me he stands head and shoulders above all others. Its more poetry and very complicated rhymes than just plain old rap. His vocal on this is perfect and extremely intense. It’s certainly not full of humour! It’s heavy lyrically and avoid it if you don’t like blasphemy. The other thing is with Eminem, the hooks are really good, this is also very catchy and if doesn’t get to Number 1 then I for one will be stunned! ‘Recovery’ the album, will be released on June the 21st.
album, “Lucky” or the two singles, the first being “How Lucky You Are” and “Perfect Day” achieved the chart success of the debut album. The progression of British chart music at this time, along with the lack of backing for rock music in the mainstream media, led to the band being dropped by Parlophone. (Maybe in retrospect “Lucky” was not a good name for the album eh guys.) Eventually skin announced they would be embarking on their farewell tour in 1998. Skin remained inactive until it was announced that the band would be playing their first live show since 1998 at the Download Festival 2009, UK. Warm up shows in London and Wolverhampton were announced, the London show quickly sold out and another London warm up show
was added. After Skin’s successful appearance at the Download Festival the band decided to reform permanently. SKIN (reunited): O2 Academy 2, Wednesday 9th June, Door time: 7.00pm, Show time: TBC

SPIRITUAL
HOROSCOPES MEADOW FARM Aries (Mar21/Apr20) You might feel that you have run up against a brick wall, but sticking to your guns and standing up for what you know is right will get you there in the end. So set down your targets, plan carefully for the results and with a little luck you will start reaping the rewards you’ve earned. Taurus (Apr21/May21) Where are going in life? Don’t just dream of what you hope is possible, take a little reality check. Sometimes our expectations get a little over inflated. It’s not that we shouldn’t hope that our dreams may come true it’s just that things may not turn out quite as you wish. Gemini (May22/June21) You are feeling communicative, eloquent and assertive at the moment and nothing seems to stem your need to get out, network and talk to people who can help you get where you want to go. If you have projects you need to explain to others then go for it and you will find others in a very receptive mood and keen to jump on your bandwagon. Cancer (June22/July23) You are going through a very intense and emotional time this week. I know this is nothing particularly unusual for you but you do need to be a little careful at the moment. It is easy to fly off the handle or say too much, but that won’t help and it certainly won’t move the issue on. Leo (July 24/Aug23) Issues at home work could get difficult but you’ll find the delays that seem to have held you back over recent weeks begin to sort themselves now. You will soon feel able to make some headway in solving the problems. Virgo (Aug24/Sep23) It’s an introspective time for quiet reflection and deep thought. You are quite a spiritual person at heart and you should be taking this time to reflect on where and what you are doing at the moment and what you really want out of life. Libra (Sept 24/Oct23) You love a get together and will jump at any chance to let your hair down and live it up a little. If you feel you just want to relax and recharge your batteries, this week won’t be the quiet down time you are hoping for. Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) Keep your temper on a tight rein even if people do get on your nerves and drive you to distraction with their lack of action and sometimes even their open hostility. Just keep your cool and don’t rise to the bait. Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Every time you start something; you find there is a hassle or a hitch that stops you in your tracks. However over the next few weeks, things will begin to click into place and you will start to make positive, purposeful progress with your plans. Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) You can’t always sit on the fence and hedge your bets; at some point you will have to make the decisions and choices that have been giving you pause for thought. There are people around that can help you make your mind up but in the end it is you that is going to be the one that has to make the choice. Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) Wherever you get your boundless energy from just tap into it now. It’s a great time for taking a break from routine and doing something different, a holiday, however short will revitalise you; even just a day away from the normal mundane routine will do you a power of good. Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) Sort out any relationship issues and don’t keep burying your head in the sand because it won’t make the problems go away, just delay it. In fact you are in the brilliant position of being able to make changes and ensure your relationships go from strength to strength.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.
Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made standard ‘Mirror
Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.
“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the local authority get it all?”
Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future Care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a childs divorce, re-marrage or financial difficulties.

It’s never too early but it can be too late to make a Will. In today’s economic climate there has never been a more crucial time to put your affairs in order. Research reveals more than half the adult population in England and Wales do not have a Will and those who need one are least likely to have one. If you care about what happens to your property after you die, you should make a Will. Without one, the State directs who inherits, so your friends, favorite charities and relatives may get nothing. It is particularly important to make a Will if you are not married or are not in a registered civil partnership (a legal arrangement that gives same-sex partners the same status as a married couple). This is because the law does not automatically recognise cohabitants (partners who live together) as having the same rights as husbands, wives and civil partners. As a result, even if you’ve lived together for many years, your cohabitant may be left with nothing if you have not made a Will. A Will is also vital if you have children or dependants who may not be able to care for themselves. Without a Will there could be uncertainty about who will look after or provide for them if you die. Writing a Will does not just dictate where and to whom your assets will go – but can also help protect your home should you need Long Term Care. It is suggested that 1 in six men and 1 in three women will need Long Term Care at some point in their lives. Without the right protection they could be putting their homes at risk to pay their fees. When asked most people say they simply haven’t got around to making a Will, never thought about it or don’t want to think about dying. Did you know that last year nearly 75,000 homes were sold to fund peoples Long Term Care - That’s over 200 homes every day!!!!! Since the introduction of charges for care for the elderly there has been a large amount of injudicious coverage in the media and by vendors of financial schemes regarding the avoidance of such charges. The harsh reality is that the government drafted the NHS and Community Care Act 1990 in the knowledge that attempts to circumvent it would be made – and guarded against them. First and foremost, the local authority is empowered to disregard, without limit of time, any transaction that they consider as “deprivation of assets”. Secondly, any change that transfers ownership of your home, robs you of your security and can result in disaster. GOOD NEWS ~ Do not become yet another statistic and protect your home now. For Musicians, Karaoke, DJs & Professional Entertainers Smackee AROUND THE FRANK Christmas Date REGION PLANK Confirmed! WORLD CUP MANIA! Frank Plank World Cup mania is sweeping North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire with his World Cup song, ‘Fabio Capello, We can live the dream’ With several radio plays on both Independent and BBC stations, numerous downloads from iTunes, amazon and napster and with over 3,000 Youtube hits on two promotional videos, this extremely catchy song is really moving fast and has even got the backing from a national newspaper. This upbeat song with several ‘hooks’ throughout it’s entirety with carefully written lyrics by Plank himself, subtly refers to Maradonna’s ‘Hand of God’ followed by the amusing line ‘We all wanna cheer, not cryin in our beer’. It certainly has a great pedigree of musicians featuring ex Jimmy James and the Vagabonds members Chris Garfield on Guitar and Alan Kirk on Keyboards. Garfield who is now a key member of Sheffield’s Paul Carrack Band, really makes this song rock and is a must listen for all guitar freaks, he is certainly a master of his profession. Alan Kirk known to have one of the sharpest ears in the music business, both recorded and produced the song at a studio in Dronfield and certainly captures a great ‘live’ atmosphere.
Nick Johnson, a football journalist and broadcaster who covers matches for Sky TV throughout the season, has been following this story for the last six weeks and filmed an early promotional video at the Hilltop Sports Club Dronfield. Frank has appeared on Peak FM’s Sean and Becky’s Breakfast Show, including ‘live’ outside broadcast performances. He has also performed the song at the last ever competitive Saltergate match at Chesterfield FC, as the Spireites are now moving on to their new ground. Voted the catchiest World Cup song, the zany, colourful, eccentric Frank Plank really puts in the energy, and makes it almost compulsive viewing on both the Youtube clips. Plank who is based in Chesterfield, works on the after dinner circuit performing both stand up and hypnotism at various Sporting and Corporate events, and has appeared with many ex World Cup players whilst promoting the song at the same time. This World Cup song is a great listen with amusing viewing, recorded on the Barmpot Record label, it is available to buy as a single from Hudson’s Music store in Chesterfield. Finally, Frank Plank would like to pass on his thanks to all the people who have been involved including Howard Copley and Harry Gorman who appeared on the Youtube video.
Visit www.frankplank.com and www.barmpotrecords. com for more information. Download at iTunes, amazon and napster.
CLUBSCENE NEWS by Paul Walker
I was able to kill two birds with one stone this week; I was due to feature a club in the Mercury area, and on Saturday afternoon whilst out fishing I received a phone call offering a solo gig at the Farm Road Club. If you’ve never been along, Farm Road can be found behind the McDonalds restaurant on Queens Road. I hadn’t worked there for over nine years, and as I arrived to set up it was a pleasure to see an almost full concert room, friendly staff and members, and of course Eric – the one-man band who acts as Concert Secretary, Chairman, and part-time Bingo Caller! He explained that, despite the difficult times, the club had on the whole managed to carry on and maintain its level of support; he put that down partly to the club’s determination to continue to supply quality entertainment and value for money, and to ensure his club was adequately promoted by advertising and publicity for the events that were taking place. So if it’s one you’ve not visited, look in the Mercury to see what’s
A WEEKEND OF ENTERTAINMENT Friday night was, for me and many others, a fantastic night at the Woodhouse Mill WMC with the Stephanie King’s Stage Show, featuring young entertainers aged 8 to 16 years. Having seen Stephanie’s last show I didn’t know how it could be improved on, but, improved it was. The local talent just gets better and better. In my opinion the entertainment on offer was vastly superior to that on offer from the T.V. show , Britain’s got Talent. Simon Cowell & co could do themselves a favour by going to one of these shows to see what real talent is is about. I cant remember the names of the young
ANOTHER FIRE ANOTHER CLUB I was somewhat dismayed to learn that yet another great Sheffield Club has had a serious fire. It's not that long ago that Dial House and Darnall Libs were detroyed by fire and now St Phillips has gone the same way. All 3 of these clubs can be described as being truly great and personally I have many great memories of playing in each of them. We have also hosted The Mercury Clubland Awards at 'The Dial' and Darnall Libs. I first played in all 3 of these back in 1976 when I joined John O'Hara and the Playboys and I also had had some great nights there playing with Big Business in the late 70's.
St Phillips was a fantastic concert room and stage and as musicians we always looked forward to playing there. I used to like the old Darnall Liberal Club and the building the new bigger concert room never really seemed to take off. Dial House was the 'king of clubs' and when I first started playing in the clubs this was the pinnacle as far as clubland was concerned. How as it come to this? It's not just the building. It's the members, the community, the employees, the acts and the memories. Every time we lose another club all clubs are the lesser for it. Park and Arbourthorne has closed it's doors and some clubs only open the concert room at weekends. We have proved that it's possible to fill clubs and there are many successful ones still pulling in the crowds.
AROUND THE CLUBS Last Friday I visited Woodhouse Mill – what a lovely club, and lovely people trying their best to put on quality entertainment for the members. I’ve had several good nights there. On Saturday I went to Gawber Road Club in Barnsley and saw a great duo – “Freshly Squeezed”. Sam and Kim are great singers, dancers and all round entertainers. Between spots they told me they are currently putting together a new routine – “Freshly Squeezed Play Time” aimed at younger
on and take a trip down there one weekend! Friday saw a tremendous charity night at Dalton Progressive Club in Rotherham. The event was organised by Cliff of Showtime UK, and showcased a selection of their acts performing in aid of Bluebell Wood Hospice and Macmillan Nurses. Steve Costa compered, and the bill featured “Fallen From Hell”, the “Paver Experience” – a new duo featuring father and son Steve paver Senior and Junior in their first appearance together, alternately singing lead and harmony with a real Motown feel, and a great duo called “Nightshift” who sang and played excellently. Also featured was Alan Turner, the former X factor finalist who made it to the last six at Simon Cowell’s house despite a wave of adverse publicity. I was delighted to win first prize in the raffle – until I found out it was six months’ free membership at a local gym! Sincere thanks to everyone who supported this great night, and especially thanks to Cliff for the organisation on the night. If you are running an event and would like some coverage in the Mercury, or publicity for charity events, please drop me a line. artists and it would probably be unfair to name individuals as overall they were all excellent. Of special note was the drummer Jazz who gave a drum solo worthy of individual note better than the young lad on the aforementioned T.V show. The proceeds of the on the door charge were donated to the charity The Sheffield Children’s hospital. Almost £300 was raised. The club was once again full but take out the parents and relatives of the young artists and you don’t have many actual club members.Their loss; they missed one of the highlights of the year. My other half and her friends paid £30 to see Lady Ga Ga at the Sheffield arena. I paid £2 at the club. that and the whisky offer of £2 for a double I think gives me a better deal. It seemed to be a weekend of drum solos as on the Saturday evening we were entertained by a very good local group The Buddies. A great old style rock and roll band. Double bass, drums, guitar and saxophone. No backing tracks or other artificial musical aids just kids, with costume changes, party dance and fun classics to make the show special and unique. I was intrigued to be invited to a rehearsal this week by another well-known duo, and wondered why they wanted me to come along. All became clear when I was treated to a complete makeover of the original act – new songs, new routines, and a new name – “Deep”. If they appear near you, don’t miss them – you certainly won’t be disappointed! Sunday night saw me in St Helen’s, appearing at the Bolton Miners Club as one half of the “Ritchie James Show”. I’m writing about myself as nobody else in Sheffield will! To be fair, all our work is usually west of the Pennines, and my partner Ritchie was on real form on the night – my main contribution was avoiding a young lady who was trying to rip off my costume during Transvestite from the Rocky Horror Show! Keep reading the Mercury!
Freshly Squeezed

Following the recent sell-out show, we are delighted to confirm that the band will be returning to Crookes on Friday 10th December with an all-new Christmas Show created especially for the Mercury! Tickets are already selling fast, so don’t miss out! Contact the Mercury Ticket Hotline on 0114 2763701 to reserve your seats! We have several exciting events on the calendar already. Next up will be an evening with Joanne Gregory, the internationally acclaimed psychic and medium. Always well attended, her show takes place at Wadsley Bridge WMC on Thursday 1st July. Our next big Charity Event is one for the ladies – on Friday 10th September, at the Platinum Suite, Bramall Lane, we are promoting a Party Night in aid of the Firefighters’ Charity. The evening includes a two course buffet, top tribute band Fake That, disco until the early hours and real life firemen in uniform! Tickets are £20.00, and rooms are available at the Copthorne Hotel next to the suite at a special discount rate. good musicians who played and sang with gusto. The drummer gave a first class drum solo aided and assisted by the guitarist/ singer who also gave a drum solo. Multi talented lads, the audience were soon on their feet cheering. During the first interval a young lad from the audience asked if he could look at their instruments. After picking up the double bass which was bigger than him he moved over to the drums and ended up playing a excellent drum solo which once again had everybody on their feet cheering. I don’t know the lad personally but I gather his name is Devon and that he is only eight years old and is already multi talented playing piano and guitar. This is one young up and coming star one who I am sure we will hear more of in the years to come. All in all a damn good weekend of entertainment. Highly satisfied. Ian Bowen
SKIFFLE FOR CHARITY If you’re looking for something worthwhile to do then get along to the Help for Heroes Charity night at The Masons Arms, Thorpe Hesley on Wednesday June 16th from 8pm. The Masons Arms at Thorpe Hesley is a busy and popular pub in the ‘traditional style’. Tickets are £6 for and you get a song book with all the songs in so don’t worry about not knowing the words. A Pie & Pea Supper, and a half hour Cabaret from Skiffle group The Bus Pass Buskers. Steve Brearley formed the group and they are all over 65 (perhaps they could fit Howard Copley into their ranks) and they have years of musical experience. They present Skiffle and novelty songs with a flavour of humour. This looks like it will be a great night with a difference and congatulations to everyone in advance for supporting this very worthy cause.
The following week sees the “2 Tone Explosion Show” at Crookes Club on Friday 17th September, featuring top tribute acts Eton Rifles and Complete Madness together with a ska disco featuring Fat Piggy and Gordon. Tickets £10 from the venue or Mercury. Into October, and the big night of the year – The Mercury Clubland Awards featuring performances from many of the winning acts – fantastic value entertainment and again tickets are available from Crookes Club or the Mercury! A very special evening has been arranged for Friday 15th October when Paul Pashley and the Big Band appear at Crookes Club. Paul is being tipped as the UK’s answer to Michael Buble – an album is due out shortly and includes songs written for him by Gary Barlow of Take That, and rock legend Bryan Adams! Don’t miss this show, as we are certain that when Paul next appears in Sheffield, it will be at a much bigger venue! The evening is in aid of Sincere Support and tickets, at only £10 each, are already selling fast! We have several more exciting events in the pipeline, so keep watching the Mercury for details!
Do blondes have more fun? MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
First of all a big thanks to celebrity chef Nigel Brown, and to you if you came down to cheer me on in my Ready Steady Cook style challenge cook off in Millennium Square, Sheffield city centre on Saturday, as part of the Food Festival. I must admit that up against the clock, facing a dash for a select number of ingredients and then having to come up with a meal in full glare of the cameras was a little daunting at first and my mind did go blank. Thankfully, I did manage a perfect omelette with fried tomatoes, onions, side salad and partially boiled potatoes though! So the question, do blondes have more fun? Well, although I might be a little mousey coloured with what’s left of my thinning thatch, I would say so. This week on the Breakfast show I’m giving you the chance to see the one and only blondie herself Debbie Harry together with the band at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Thu 17th Jun, asking you to unscramble a daily anagram which contains a mystery blonde haired celebrity’s name. So far we’ve had a reality show judge - ‘Handle a nomad’, and one of the most popular stars who’s ever lived - ‘My Norma in lore’ to name just a few (answers below). The show features some of the classics from ‘Heart of Glass’ through to ‘The Tide is High’ and material from their brand new CD ‘Panic of Girls’. For more details, including news of a special Magic ticket discount, just log on to www.magicam.co.uk. Oh, and the answers – ‘Amanda Holden’ and ‘Marilyn Monroe’. Talk to you back on air every weekday morning 6 to 10am.

BRICKIE JOHN IS HOD STUFF AT VIRGIN ATLANTIC PRO-AM QUALIFIER Nottingham bricklayer John Hawley cemented a trip to the Bahamas when he came out on top at the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-Am Championship supported by SkyCaddie qualifier at Coxmoor Golf Club. Hawley won the event by four shots with Beeston Park PGA professional Lee Clarke as the pair carded a commanding score of 12 under par. And once Hawley had finished his round, he played the Sutton-in-Ashfield course all over again in a club match against Coxmoor later that evening. The pair now head for the final in the Bahamas where a £5,000 first prize is on offer at the Sandals Resort Emerald Bay, on November 23-28, The 45-year-old Hawley stopped briefly in between events to speak of his delight at coming top of the leader board with Clarke. “It went like a dream, it was absolutely brilliant,” he said. “I think we might have exceeded our expectations, it was a good team effort but Lee was brilliant and holed some superb putts. “And as for making it to the Bahamas as the prize, that’s something extraordinary and something I’ve never experienced before as a player. “Our round couldn’t have gone much better. “We had a couple of eagles early on and we were six under at the turn. “After that, we made four birdies in a row and Lee made a fantastic putt at the 14th. “We came in at 12 under par and eight under was the best at that point. We knew that someone could come in at 13 under but they didn’t so it really was the perfect day.” Clarke has been happy to rediscover his form this season. The 29-year-old finished second at the Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship at Southerndown last month and now he will be heading out for the PGA Pro-Am Grand Final. He said: “If I’d putted in the Welsh event like I did here then I’d have walked it. “I’ve been doing a lot of work on my short game and it paid off. “My form’s definitely there, I’ve been playing
some solid golf recently and I’m careful not to get too carried away in case it comes back to bite you. “But I seem to be sieving out the rubbish from my game at the moment. “John was a really fantastic bloke to team up with and it’s a dream come true to get to the Bahamas for me as well.” RESULTS 1 61 (-12) Lee Clarke/John Hawley Beeston Fields 2. 65 (-8) Ian Brown/Chad Hunt Bulwell Forest 3.65 (-8) Nigel Parkinson/Jason Coddington Renishaw Park

THREE MERRY LADS FESTIVAL A SUCCESS The bank holiday weekend saw the second annual Three Merry Lads Beer and Music Festival take place at the picturesque pub up in Lodge Moor. With rain forecast, it was a delight when the Friday turned out to be beautifully sunny and the evenings entertainment was eagerly anticipated. First up, and back by popular demand, was Ely Cattleman providing witty lyrics to heartfelt love songs in the way only capable by George Bannister, who this time was joined by new member Tom. A tongue-in-cheek cover of 'Sexual Healing' was the highlight of the set. Following George and Tom were local favourites, Dead Like Harry, fresh off the back of a successful UK tour promoting their new album, 'Know The Joy Of Good Living'. As the sun went down (with the temperature) they providing a storming headlining set that included most of the album plus a couple of new numbers. The crowd really got into the set and fed off the abundance of energy coming from the stage, especially in the songs 'Sarah' and 'When We Were Seventeen'. With the crowd screaming for more, encore song 'Joanna' had the tent singing along and back into the pub where a few more beers were enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, the predicted rain came down on Saturday, but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of the hardy souls who came down to support the battle of the bands. With a coveted slot at the Tramlines festival up for grabs and a judging panel that included BBC Radio Sheffield DJ Iain Hodgson, there was plenty of excitement when first band Gosper took the stage. Formed by friends at Sheffield University, this fourpiece are full of potential with some catchy indie-pop songs at their disposal. Although not the finished article just yet, with a bit more stage confidence and another year or two gigging under their belt, Gosper should turn into a cracking band. Second up were by far the youngest and most well supported band of the evening, The Retrospectives. Although none of this three piece were old enough to sample the fine selection of beer and cider available, they didn't let that show in their performance with an energetic and confident performance that belied their age. It will be interesting to see how these talented youngsters progress in the coming years. Soldier Blue were the penultimate band in the competition, and their years of experience playing in various bands was very apparent. Although new bass player Ian had only joined a few weeks previous, their set was tight, polished and thoroughly enjoyable. The harmonies provided by drummer Mark complimented the powerful lead vocal of Dave Beaumont and their overall sound of blues-tinged pop-rock was a big crowd pleaser.

These Black and White Flames closed the competition with a accomplished set of thoughtful and melodic rock songs. The Rotherham based four-piece certainly draw their influences from across the pond (but not the one forming at the back of the tent) from artists such as R.E.M., Ryan Adams, Tom Petty and others, but manage to avoid sounding too much like any of them. As the headliners, Violet May, were preparing to take to the stage, Iain Hodgson announced that Soldier Blue were the lucky band to be playing at Tramlines this year, and this seemed to be a popular choice. All that was left was to enjoy a very self-assured performance from the Sheffield five piece fronted by Chris McClure. Their dirty indie rock certainly got the crowd moving, although one song seemed to merge into the next without too much to differentiate between them. All in all a successful conclusion to a weekends entertainment which defied the inclement weather to once again leave Lodge Moor in peace ... until next year!

News of BIG fish this week from James Hawtin who visited Tyram Hall Fishery near Doncaster. Arriving in the early evening, James set out his stall to cast towards a snaggy margin area that had been baited with 40 odd boilies. A double 16mm hook bait was lowered over the top to set the trap...First thing in the morning after a quiet night, a screaming alarm put James into a ‘hell of a scrap’ with a stunning 35lb ghost carp! Understandably, once the new personal best had been returned to the depths, he was buzzing all night until the same rod ripped off the following morning resulting in a 31lb 10oz lump! Fantastic! Finishing off with a ‘small’ James and his 35lb Ghostie 21lb 6oz common, James reports that it was probably the best 48 hours of his life! If you fancy a crack at Tyram Hall, have a look at the website www.tyramfisheries. co.uk There are match, pleasure and a syndicate lake on the site and the web gives the very latest information. Match angling complex Garbolino Lindholme, Epsworth, Doncaster reports great results in the open matches. Former World Champion Tommy Pickering hammered out over 150lbs of fish on ‘the method’ from peg 14 on Oasis Lake, and other massive weights have been necessary to frame at this prolific venue. Meat, pellets and casters have all been fishing well, and worm has sneaked the odd placing. More good news for younger anglers; Garbolino Lindholme will be running FREE coaching sessions on Monday evenings starting at 5.30pm for those under 16 years old. Not only are the sessions completely free, you only get to fish with Tommy Pickering don’t you!!!! Not to be missed by those who want to learn from the very best anglers!! More news from www.lindholmelakes.co.uk or give them a ring. It seems that Doncaster anglers have loads of top quality fishing to go at; Candy Corner Fishery is another smashing venue which has seen a quieter week due to fish spawning. It has finished now however and the fishing is getting back to normal. Match weights on AJ’s lake were topped by Steve Barraclough fishing pellet shallow to storm away from the opposition with a stonking 180lbs of fish!! Steve used the pole at 13 metres with 6mm baits to catch consistently throughout. For details of more matches and catches, take a look at www.candycornerfisheries.co.uk 5 Individual Lakes

STARTER’S ORDERS HORSE RACING by Timelord
I may be talking through my pocket here but I was extremely disappointed with the ride that Frankie Dettori gave to Rewilding in the Derby. I don’t usually engage in “after-timing” and armchair jockeyship but I’m thinking of making an exception in this case – this was the Derby after all. I cannot think other than that Frankie himself will be very disappointed when he reviews his performance on Rewilding in the cold light of day. To start with I must question whether the Ballydoyle pacemaker, At First Sight, wasn’t given too much rope out in front. I simply could not believe how relaxed Dettori seemed on Rewilding at the top of the hill as the leader scampered on and away round Tattenham Corner. He appeared to be simply letting his mount canter along, showing no visible sense of urgency whatsoever that I could detect at that critical point in the race. I wonder if he was concentrating too much on what Johnny Murtagh and Jan Vermeer were doing rather than watching what was happening out in front where (critically)the race’s outcome was developing. Fair play to Ryan Moore on Workforce though – he was the one with enough tactical race sense to keep close enough to the frenetic pace set by At First Sight to give himself a winning chance, and Workforce won very impressively in the end in a very quick time. However, if it is true that Godolphin thought that by beating Jan Vermeer they would win the race then they got it badly wrong. If they thought that they had only Jan Vermeer to beat and rode the race to do just that (instead of riding it to beat all the other contestants) then they only got the plan half right. OK that part of the plan worked as they beat JV by 4 lengths. Unfortunately they reckoned without the front two, finishing 7 lengths and ¾ of a length behind them. I am confident that if Rewilding had been ridden closer to the pace not only would he not have been set too much to do from 3 furlongs out but he would then have had a possible winning chance instead of only a chance of getting placed. Don’t forget that Derby runners are
STEELERS
generally all meant to be potential Group One horses that you have to beat to win the race – horses that will also quicken when you hope to - so, unless you have a jump jet under you, you cannot lie so far out of your ground and have a hope in hell of winning. If this theory is anywhere near the truth then it shows remarkable ineptitude on the part of Godolphin race planning, whoever was responsible for the strategy. Finally on this subject, impressive as Workforce was, I would not write off Rewilding just yet on the basis of this run. I reckon that we may not yet have seen anything like the full extent if his abilities on the track and he may well be able to gain his revenge on the winner later, if ridden more judiciously, particularly on softer ground. In the Coronation Cup on the Friday Youmzain finished fourth under Keiron Fallon. I cannot crib this performance as he came to have every chance two furlongs out but was just not good enough on the day. To my mind he became unbalanced on the camber as he was making his move and looked as though he had lost his action for a critical few strides, bumping into Cavalryman as he rolled down the slope. That said Fame and Glory won deservedly in the end after a tough battle with Sariska who also ran well. In the Oaks my trio finished in the order I selected but unfortunately with four others in front of them. I still like Gertrude Bell and would suggest that she be followed through the season. I have no excuses for her in this race but it may be that she will be shown in a better light on a more conventional track. In the other races at the meeting there were some performances of particular note: I thought that Ramona Chase was given a peach of a ride by Nicky Mackay (Frankie Dettori please note!) to finish second to Fiery Lad, who got up on the wide outside under a powerpacked Fallon drive in the last furlong to deprive this column of a notable success at a long price. It is possible that our horse was unsighted as Fiery Lad was so wide of him but he remains one to follow while he is in such good heart. Yaa Wayl, my “danger” to Kaptain Kirkup (4th), ran well to finish second to Shakespearean. On Saturday High award ran out a ready winner of the Woodcote, provid-

ICE HOCKEY “I watched my first game by Sarah Youle of hockey in Sheffield,” said local lad Geoff, “it was the Steelers and the Basingstoke Bison, from that moment I was hooked on hockey and a Steelers fan. ing this column with its first success of the meeting. This was quickly followed up for us by Antara winning the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes where, for balance, I thought that in contrast to his ride on Rewilding, Frankie gave her a brilliant ride, taking the race on at the right time and keeping her up her work all the way to the line despite Reggane’s late bold bid. In the penultimate contest Mull of Dubai ran well for us getting third at 33/1 and in the last Baldemar wasn’t quite up to getting in the frame but was close up behind the principals, being beaten less than two lengths. However there were a couple of selections at good each way prices that managed to reach the frame so I hope you had these covered (Ramona Chase @ 40/1, Mull of Dubai @33/1). This weekend is generally poor fare in my opinion. I suggest that you keep your powder dry for Royal Ascot next week where I hope to have some decent each way value bets for you. However, in case you want to have a go I have had a look at the weekend’s TV races (include the Scoop 6) which look almost impossible to me at the 5 day declarations stage – N.B. wealth warning!!:

SHEFFIELD EAGLES RUGBY LEAGUE by Jim Collins
Batley Bulldogs 26 Sheffield Eagles 16 Northern Rail Cup Quarter-final Mount Pleasant Stadium Sunday 6 June Eagles’ hopes of reaching the Northern Rail Cup final slipped away on Batley Bulldog’s sloping pitch. A three-try burst in the final minutes of the first half proved too much to pull back in the final 40 minutes of quarter-final clash. Fullback Misi Taulapapa was strong in defence and forward Trevor Exton put in big sets for the Eagles but a gritty Batley defence held out. The killer blow was a late disputed penalty that gave the Bulldogs their only points of the second half and extended their lead to two converted tries with time running out. There was a minute’s silence before the kick-off in memory of the victims of the Whitehaven shootings, which included former rugby league player Garry Purdham. Eagles started playing up the Mount Pleasant slope and went into an early lead when after prop Michael Haley was held near the posts before loose-forward Dane McDonald took Aaron Groom’s pass at the angle to blast over. Brendon Lindsay couldn’t add the goal. Batley were making use of

the slope to pile on pressure and took the lead with prop Sean Hesketh forcing his way over near the posts and Gareth Moore adding the goal. The Bulldogs dominated possession and hit the Eagles with three tries in seven minutes. Substitute forward Craig Potter went over from first receiver and fullback Johnny Campbell took the ball on the charge to go under the posts. Eagles problems mounted as loose-forward Ash Lindsay sidestepped and weaved his was in for a try under the posts. Moore added the goals for a 24-4 lead at half-time. Playing down the slope after restart it was the Eagles turn to put on the pressure as they chased an early breakback try. Pressure forced a second set of six and then a penalty before hooker Craig Cook squeezed over from dummy half. Lindsay added the goal and the Eagles were back in the game. A break by Lindsay sent Yere on a power run before the centre passed to winger Danny Mills to score in the corner. Lindsay added a great goal from the touchline. Batley were given a boost when referee Robert Hicks changed his decision and gave Batley a controversial penalty that Moore kicked. The final minutes saw the Eagles frantically battered the Batley line but they were met by dogged defence. Yere was launched on a couple of blasting runs and winger Richie Barnett ran

third is split into three regions. “USK Anif are in the West region and it will be a bit of a test for us but it’s not a test I am looking to be too hard at this stage. “We will be putting our boots on for the first time and the lads will be on the back of a very tough week physically where we will certainly train three times a day for the early part of our trip to Austria and twice a day in the latter part. “Hopefully it’s a game that the lads can get a good run around in, that we can play all the players in and that we get our first taste of playing on a big pitch.”

and first club Rotherham. The native Sheffielder is equally effective down either flank and is delighted to link up with his hometown club. He said: “It’s great to be here. I’ve wanted to play for Sheffield Wednesday for such a long time so to get this sorted is a great feeling. “I’ve supported Wednesday all my life, my family are all Wednesdayites too so to get this opportunity is fantastic.” Owls manager Alan Irvine had Sedgwick under his charge at Preston and says the midfielder matches his new signing criteria as he looks to lead Wednesday back to the Championship. Irvine said: “Chris is a player I know very well from my time at

dent of quickly strengthening with a replacement number one. Kenny returned to action only at the end of last season after serving a nine month ban imposed following a positive drugs test during the 2009 play off semi-final. United stood by their player and extended his contract not long after the suspension was upheld by the Football Association. Since receiving the approach United officials have spoken at length with Kenny and his representatives - pointing out how the club has stood by the player during his lengthy suspension. “We are very disappointed and frustrated by what has happened,” said Chief Executive Trevor Birch. “Paddy was offered a new three year enhanced contract
which he has chosen to reject. “Paddy has now had discussions with QPR and agreed terms. As a result we have been left with no alternative but to let him go.” Kenny joined the Blades in 2002 - originally on loan - from Bury. The deal became permanent and he went onto make 278 appearances for United and during that time played seven times for the Republic of Ireland. United’s attentions now switch to bringing in a new goalkeeper. Mr Birch added: “We now have to move on and swiftly find a replacement. That process is well under way to bring in the right player in good time for pre-season. I am very confident of finding that player.”
AND CRESSWELL MAKES THREE
three-year deal, taking him to the summer of 2013, whilst Morgan and Montgomery have both penned three year deals at Bramall Lane.“I’m very pleased to get it sorted,” said Cresswell. “At the end of the season the club came to me and we opened talks about a new deal and we have finally got it done, which I am over the moon about. Obviously I have followed in the foot steps of some really influential players like ‘Morgs’ and ‘Monty’, which is fantastic news for the club.“It is a boost for the club that experienced players are committing themselves. I was in that we could now look forward to some stability after a year struggling to adequately fill the void he’d left. But the Blades’ worst nightmare has been realised, with Paddy making a break and joining his former mentor Neil Warnock in the capital. Now personally I am trying to stay as level headed as possible on the matter. We did stand by Paddy when most clubs would have sacked him for his foolish mistake and we did offer him a new contract (all be it on reduced wages) when it looked like his career was on the blink. But his career has gone off the rails slightly and it is quite understandable why he might want a new start to get not just his professional life,
talks when the Morgs and Monty deals were ongoing so I was also pleased to see them sign new deals - it helped me make the decision to sign.” Cresswell added: “I am looking forward to pre-season and start working towards what we want to achieve. I have tasted promotion from this division before and I want to do it again.“I’ve spoken to Trevor Birch, who has been fantastic with my deal, obviously I have to thank the Chairman for putting the deal forward and the Gaffer for bringing me here in the first place.” but his personal life back on track. Those in the ‘Paddy-bashing’ camp will say we stuck by him and now he’s stabbed us in the back, and to some extent I agree. What you have to remember is that the club allowed a £750,000 release clause to be placed in his contract, which QPR’s bid activated. If we weren’t happy to sell him for that amount then we wouldn’t have included such a clause; remember Paddy was hardly in a position to negotiate when the contract was signed. Paddy is not the only reason why this transfer has gone through, although I doubt many will have that in mind when QPR visit the Lane next season.
“The reason I came here in the first place was to get this club back to the Premiership because everything is geared up for the top-flight. I am not here just to pick my money up, I am here to win promotion. “I am an ambitious individual and getting back into the Premiership is something that drives me on. We have got to set our sights on the big prize and we must give it a real good crack.” After recently stating in the press he wanted to bring the curtain down on his playing career with United, Cresswell is understandably happy to have signed on for a further three years, but says he
expects to play on beyond that and is adamant there is every reason to be positive about the forthcoming campaign: “This contract will take me to the age of 35 so it is a good one for me, but I am a fit guy - probably one of the fittest at the club - so it won’t be a problem anyway because I intend to play on for a few more years after this current deal. “We need that core of players in the squad and the Gaffer is also working hard to bring other players in. Hopefully the experience of the older lads can make it a strong dressing room and we have every reason to be optimistic.”

Yours sincerely, Angry Mob! WEEKLY FANS COLUMN by Jon Warburton
Well what a furore seems to have been unleashed by the transfer of our ‘beloved’ Paddy Kenny to cash rich Queens Park Rangers. It is just the latest chapter in the soap opera that is Sheffield United Football Club, and for once our fans appear pretty much unified in their feelings. When Paddy returned to the starting line up in the last home game of the season after completing a nine month drugs ban, he was given a heroes’ welcome. The masses were willing to forgive and forget, happy in the knowledge

Preston. I know him as a player and a professional and he has all the right attributes I am looking for. “He is very experienced, very fit, has the strength of character to play at Hillsborough and has a tremendous work ethic. He is also a Sheffield Wednesday supporter and really wants to play for this club. “I enjoyed working with him at Preston and I am looking forward to working with him again with Sheffield Wednesday.” Sedgwick joined Rotherham straight from school and went on to make 273 appearances for the Millers. He signed for Preston in 2004 and posted 254 appearances whilst on the Deepdale books.

Richard Cresswell says he has decided to remain a Blade in the hope of getting another crack at the Premiership. Cresswell penned a new threeyear deal on Monday afternoon and is now contracted at the Lane until June 2013. The experienced marksman, who netted 14 times last term, loved his first year with the Blades and is confident that a promotion push is on the cards next season: “It has been a fantastic move for me personally. I came here to play football, even took a drop in wages, and things couldn’t have gone much better. “I managed to score plenty of goals and in the end I think I won the fans over, so I want to produce that level of performance for the next three years. “It clicked here straight away, I knew a lot of the lads and to be honest I settled in quickly. Apart from breaking my rib everything went smoothly. “The Gaffer is building another new squad this summer which I am delighted to be part of, and hopefully we will have everything in place to be competing at the top end of this division next term.
