COUNCIL SEEKS VIEWS ON LICENSING Sheffield City Council is inviting the city’s residents, community groups, businesses, licensees and other agencies to have their say on licensing in the city. They are being asked to comment on a revised licensing policy for Sheffield, which has recently been reviewed to offer more information and guidance not only to applicants

for licences, but also residents and businesses. The consultation runs to August 9 2010. After the consultation the policy will be revised to take into account the comments received, and the final version will be agreed by the Council. Chief Licensing Officer, Steve Lonnia, explains: “The policy must be reviewed every three years in accordance with the

law. Although the policy has worked well we wanted to give much more information and guidance to everyone who uses it so that they find it helpful and easy to use.” The Chair of Licensing, Cllr Clive Skelton, said “We want to hear the views of everyone. Having a good policy in place will help us ensure that we have a city that people want to

live, work and visit on a regular basis and where they are safe to enjoy their leisure time. Please let us have your comments.” Paul Thompson, Assistant Manager of the Frog and Parrott pub who was crowned Sheffield’s first winner of the Best Bar None awards in January, said: “The revised policy should help everyone ensure that Sheffield is the place to visit and

that we continue to offer safe and well-managed licensed premises for everyone to enjoy.” Comments on the policy from residents, community groups and businesses are welcome. You can see the policy on the Council’s website at www. sheffield.gov.uk/ policyconsultation. A hard copy of the policy can be obtained by contacting the

Licensing General Section on 0114 203 7752. You can email your comments to general.licensing@ sheffield.gov.uk or, alternatively, write to “Licensing Consultation”, Licensing General Section, Sheffield City Council, Town Hall, Pinstone Street, Sheffield, S1 2HH. All comments need to be received before 5pm on August 9 2010.

It’s been a while since out last outside broadcast and what better way to get back into it than returning to an old favourite. For several years Radio Nightingale regularly broadcast from St Leonard’s church in Dinnington but our last visit was in June 2008 celebrating our 30th anniversary. A chance meeting at the hospital late last year with one of the regular participants in the services brought a to light a misunderstanding of why there had been no more broadcasts – we were waiting to be invited, they were waiting for us to ask! So with all that sorted out we are back to Dinnington on Sunday 20th June. The service will be led by the Rev. Jane Bolton and will bring together people from different denominations. The service will be relayed live back to the patients at the Rotherham General Hospital from 4.00pm. We’re visiting the church this week for a rehearsal, maybe I shouldn’t say that and give the game away as to why everything sounds so well organised. Keep it between you and me then! The 20th June is also Father’s Day and don’t forget to thank dad for all those years of taxi-ing you around, putting up with your loud music and acting as your cash machine. No matter how many years ago it was, it’s never too late to show him you care. Visiting easyfundraising for your Father’s Day present means everyone’s a winner - Dad gets a great gift, you save money and we get a donation at no cost to yourself. There are some special offers too including: 30% OFF top experiences from lastminute.com; double donations from DELL; FREE CD from Play.com; £5 OFF at Prezzybox. Visit easyfundraising’s dedicated Father’s Day page now at www.easyfundraising.org.uk/radionightingale Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. COPLEYʼS COLUMN We have at last got the World Cup underway, and I have to say that England made a poor start against U.S.A, with Robert Green, our goalkeeper gifting them a goal, which never looked like coming. Thoughtfully, channel four have also got the final Big Brother on our screens, thus giving those not interested in football some alternative viewing. I can say, without fear of contradiction that England will not win the World Cup, (how this will gladden the hearts of the Scots) and having watched France and Holland, neither will they. Spain would appear to be the favourites, with probably the strongest opposition coming from Brazil. Big Brother put out on show a pretty weird bunch of housemates, with the only girl I found in the least attractive coming from Lesbania. They are all a bunch of wannabees without a prayer of making it any other way, and unless Endomoll, the producers, conjure up some steamy scenes, I fear that viewing figures will drop each week the show goes on. I have been fortunate to have been entertained regally, first on Thursday night, where a great many of us gathered to celebrate the birthday of Ray Keddy, who along with Bev runs the White Swan, Dronfield., a splendid hostelry. The entertainment was provided by Joel White, Emma Naylor and splendid guitarist, Russ Dennett. All are excellent artistes in their own right, and performing together were absolutely fantastic, well worthy of Ray’s birthday. Ray, an eternal Newcastle fan was presented with a large framed number nine Newcastle shirt signed by his favourite player,

Alan Shearer. I woke up on Friday morning thinking that how my life was fantastic, nice house, beautiful girlfriend, some quality friends, great entertainment, thirty one days of non-stop football and reasonably good health when I was struck down with toothache. On Sunday night, I wanted to spend some time with my great friend and top disc jockey, Gary Sinclair, now hopefully getting over his recent stroke and six of us went to see the number one Michael Jackson tribute Navi at The Dusty Miller, Barlborough, owned by my mate Adrian Fazackerly. We dined at his famous carvery, surely the best for miles around and great value for money, before the show started at nine thirty, and what a show it was, absolutely fantastic, with Navi looking exactly like Michael Jackson and putting a huge amount of energy into the production, along with his dancers. Navi is big time now, and the Dusty Miller, for which he has much

affection, is the only public house where he can be seen. Owner Adrian, very sportingly got on stage with six other volunteers to perform a dance routine, and he certainly impressed the large audience. He has obviously been having a few lessons since Navi’s last appearance. Navi is to appear later on this year and should not be missed, if you can obtain a ticket. After the show, Adrian brought Navi to meet me and I found him to be most charming and humble. He told me that he had sung for the king of pop and promised to e-mail me a photograph of the two of them for inclusion in the Mercury. However, it had not arrived by print deadline time. In these times of economic depression, Adrian evidences that with a lot of hard work and thought, it is not impossible to buck the trend. There is much to look forward to this year with the Mercury putting some great shows on and of course the Mercury awards.

After a few minutes the guy turns to the priest and asks, “Say, Father, what causes arthritis?” “Loose living; cheap, wicked woman; too much alcohol; and contempt for your fellow man,” answers the priest. “I’ll be damned,” the drunk mutters, returning to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he said, nudges the man and apologizes. “I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to be so harsh. How long have you had arthritis?”

SHREDDED WHEAT!

LIVE REVIEW - PENDULUM venue: Doncaster Dome date: Saturday 22nd May

Wheatus is an American rock group from New York. They are known largely for their 2000 hit single “Teenage Dirtbag” which was featured in the movie Loser. Wheatus was formed by Brendan B. Brown in 1995. Brown wrote a few songs, enlisted the help of his brother Peter on drums and Rich Liegey on bass (he was replaced by Mike McCabe after the release of their selftitled debut Wheatus). The band regularly performed at Luna Lounge and were one of the first groups to emerge out of the lower east side NYC downtown music scene. In 1999, they hired New York attorney Ray Maiello to shop their self produced debut album and signed with Kevin Patrick at Columbia Records; shortly thereafter, Maiello was hired as band manager. Due to disagreements with their record label over Brendan B. Brown’s refusal to lip sync on Top Of The Pops, Wheatus’ second album, Hand Over Your Loved Ones, received little or no promotion in the UK and was never even released by Sony in the USA. Consequently it did not sell well, with the single “American in Amsterdam” also failed to significantly impact the music charts. The band re-released their second album in 2005 under the title Suck Fony (good one guys) on their own label Montauk Mantis with two new songs, “William McGovern” and the Pat Benatar cover “Hit Me with Your Best Shot”. The album was originally only available from the band’s website, except in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Here there

is a greater demand for Wheatus albums, and a greater proliferation of independent music stores, which allowed the band to get a distribution contract, despite the relative obscurity of their record label. (As of April 2007, Suck Fony is available on iTunes and eMusic). Wheatus was signed by Warner Bros. to perform a theme for the Warner Bros. cartoon show Jackie Chan Adventures. The band members decided to remake one of their rather obscure songs titled “Punk Ass Bitch” for the theme (“Punk Ass Bitch” which was penned by Liegey, remains one of the most downloaded Wheatus songs according to iTunes). Their performance was later scrapped in favour of an instrumental theme for the show, but was used as the ending theme, and in a few commercial advertisements for the show, on the Warner Bros. television network. On Twitter Brendan B. Brown announced that Pop, Songs, and Death: Vol. 2 The Jupiter EP was scheduled for release in May 2010, however, the release was postponed indefinitely due to unforeseen circumstances including the death of ex-band-member Phil Jimenez’s sister in a car accident and tour line-up changes. The EP is likely to be released in August on the label Blacktop Records and will be released on vinyl and CD format. The 10th Anniversary Tour of the US, UK and one date in Austria has begun (yes it really is 10 years!) and that tour brings them to Sheffield’s O2 Academy on the 20th. Arguably Australia’s greatest export since Mick Dundee, the wild 6 piece outfit held the Doncaster Dome in a strangle hold on Saturday the 22nd May. I approached this gig with an air of entrepedation, the last time I went to Doncaster was to watch The Prodigy earlier in the year when my friend had his elbow shattered after falling in the mosh pit and the last time I watched Pendulum a crowd surfer volleyed me in the back of the head knocking me semi-unconscious and chipping my front tooth. Despite this however I fully enjoyed both previous events. The Dome has always been popular with dance fans, hosting regular names such as The Prodigy & Faithless and yet again it was a shoulder to shoulder, face wedged in the guy in fronts wet back, swirling sweat pit as the crowd lapped up a volcanic two hour set. The D&B rockers are to the world music scene what Aussie Rules Football is to ball sports; hyper energetic, testosterone fuelled and decidedly unlike anything else. Formed in 2002 by 3 musicians from Western Australia, this group have always strove to create a fresh new sound within dance music, mixing Drum and Bass beats with soaring riffs, epic vocals and rock attitude. After the epic single ‘Vault’ in 2003, followed a run of acclaimed singles such as ‘Slam’ and ‘Fasten Your Seatbelt’ which broke Pendulum into the public domain. The band released their debut album ‘Hold Your Colour’ selling in excess of 300,000

reviews by presley artist: Scissor Sisters album: Fire with Fire release date:21st June

artist:Diddy Dirty Money Hello single: Good Morning release date:21st June

6 long years ago, the Scissor Sisters started to break through into our charts with a bizarre cover of Pink Floyds ‘Comfortably Numb’. At the time it seemed like an extraordinary version. I remember hearing it for the first time in Top Shop on Fargate (I’d stumbled in by mistake, I was looking for the pub…………honest!) Now that cover seems totally normal because we are used to what this band is all about. Songs such as ‘Laura’ ‘Take Your Mama’ and ‘Filthy/ Gorgeous’ were huge hits. Brit awards followed and the band became huge. Now they’re back, it does seem like they’ve been away an awfully long time though. With an album ‘Nightwork’ to follow on the 28th of this month, this precursor to that is a big deal. The difficult 3rd album! I know people say the difficult album is supposed to be the second one and they’re probably right. But this one will prove, for the Scissor Sisters at least, to be the one that leaves their careers either hanging in the balance or taking them onto another level entirely. ‘Fire with Fire’ isn’t what we’ve come to expect from them. There is no sign of the glamness, of the gay campness or even the disconess (is that even a real word??). This song is serious. It’s very uplifting, it’s catchy too. But its putting out a much more straight faced Sisters. Now the question is, will the public go for this? My theory is a resounding yes. As long as they keep the basic elements of what fans of theirs love about them they’ll be fine. But what this song may do is win them a whole load of new fans. This is an accomplished tune, its still fun, but maybe more adult fun. Imagine a gay Coldplay and you may get a very rough idea of what this sounds like.

A lot of the major rap artists are releasing stuff at the moment. Eminem etc etc. This is P Diddy’s new creation, basically him and a couple of women. I heard this for the first time on the Jonathon Ross show on the Beeb the other night. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a mixture of electro and rap and it does make rap sound a bit fresher. Diddy had on stage with him, wait for this………………on drums, our very own Matt Helders……… yes he of the Arctic Monkeys. How odd??? But it worked really well and it looked and sounded right. What did impress me was that Diddy performed more like a rockstar than a rapper, I liked that. This will be a big hit; his name will make sure of that and it aint half bad.

copies and prompted their headlining of the 2005 Glastonbury Dance Stage. The rest, as they say, is history. The second album ‘In Silico’ debuted at #2 in the UK and featured crossover hit ‘Propane Nightmares’, since then they have received global praise, gracing live stages ranging from Sheffield’s own Tuesday Club to headlining last year’s Download Festival. After a tantalizing warm up set from Sub Focus, the crowd erupt as Pendulum dive into ‘Under The Waves’ and ‘Witchcraft’ from the chart topping third album ‘Immersion’ – the result of multiplying ‘Hold Your Colour’ by ‘In Silico’ and then sprinkling it with yet more fresh guitar riffs and big beats. Perhaps the reason these boys attract such a loyal yet diverse fan base is the sheer depth and breadth of their musical ability.

The next hour was a showcase which led to the capacity crowd suffering near exhaustion in the extreme heat and intensity, before the final punishment came in the form of ‘Propane Nightmares’ and the remix of the legendary Prodigy tune ‘Voodoo People’. The only thing left after this was the mass jettisoning of shirts, shoes and most other garments, as the crowd, and the band, had given everything they had to give at yet another monster gig at The Dome.

artist:BowWowWow single: Bow Wow Wow release date:21st June Maybe because of the sad passing of Malcolm McLaren recently, this has been re-packaged and put back out onto the shelves of the record shops. It was his first big project after the Sex Pistols imploded, and the erstwhile media manipulator made sure his new band bounded onto the scene with a whole gaggle of gimmicks. The first was Annabella Lwin, a 14-yearold Burmese immigrant he found working in a laundry and decided to remake into a post punk goddess. Then there was what used to be Adam’s Ants, the trio of Matthew Ashman [guitar],Leroy Gorman [bass] and Dave Barbarossa [drums], whom McLaren introduced to African music [specifically, the sound of Burundi tribal drumming] then induced them to dump Adam and follow him. The major scandal of the time though was that, even though she was only 14, Annabella was naked on the sleeve. This probably was a better marketing ploy than the music, which in the main was a bit poor. Although ‘Chihuahua’ and ‘Go Wild in the Country are great songs. An album to buy? Maybe not. But a couple of songs to check out online, most definitely.

SUMMERSLAM WITH SUMMERLIN Say hello to snowballing faster than The Atari’s Chris Roe, SUMMERLIN; a group that's on a mission to put the party back into pop rock. The Doncaster/Leeds based 5 piece set out to carve their own niche with a unique blend of lighthearted power- pop. With their debut E.P, So Make Your Move out in July, the group aims to give the musical masses something to smile about. Summerlin’s Drew Lawson (vocals), Ben Jackson (guitar, vocals), Jake Greenwood (bass), Lee Whitaker (guitar) and Liam Broad (drums) met while their current bands were falling apart and were immediately bonded by their shared love of pop music and party. They began playing music together and in turn created Summerlin in Late 2008. Drawing on a wide range of influences, the group crafted an upbeat poprock sound, "We wanted to write love songs you could party too" With their fan base growing rapidly, attention on the band began to swirl after playing sold out shows across the UK with the likes of

Twenty Twenty, My PassionQuitedrive, Set Your Goals, Sherwood and Army of Freshman. 2010 seems to be the year for Summerlin. First they became one of the top 20 played unsigned acts on Myspace, followed by being asked to appear on BBC Radio One Annie&Nick Switch show where they were interviewed, recorded a jingle and they were tipped as one of the bands to look out for by Edith Bowman. With The release of their debut E.P an first UK headline tour July the buzz for this band is

they ever imagined. Checkout Summerlin on www.myspace.com/ summerlin with links to facebook&twitter

ZEENAT RESTAURANT Attercliffe’s Gem goes from strength to strength!

Winning the International Curry Club Awards for the past 4 consecutive years, being awarded Chef of the Year 5* Hospitality Service Award and over twenty years’ successful trading must surely be enough to place the Zeenat Restaurant in the high echelons of the Sheffield dining out scene. Now following a high standard refurbishment, set with mood lighting, air conditioning and an exquisitely decorated interior, the Zeenat has raised its game plan to attract Sheffield’s ever demanding clientele. For the purpose of this review we opted for the buffet night, a weekly gem which has already built a fair reputation for good, honest fresh apna style Asian cuisine. The all-you-can-eat buffet (which is changed weekly) for only £7.95 was certainly

proving popular with a steady stream of customers entering the restaurant throughout our visit. This week’s offer consisted of starters of homemade vegetable samosas, seekh kebab and aloo chops all of which we eagerly sampled, fresh tasting and nicely spiced with the accompanying mint and chilli sauce. Two freshly cooked popadoms were attentively served with one of the spiciest pickle trays I have had the pleasure of sampling. A pint of draught Cobra Lager at only £2.80 was very much appreciated to cool things down for the main course. The main course buffet offered a choice of four top quality dishes; the house speciality of lamb on the bone Maharaja, superbly cooked with tender lamb and spicy mince meat; chicken tikka karhie richly seasoned with chunky pieces of slow cooked chicken; saag panier with ample amounts of spinach (easily my personal favourite); and aloo mater, again nicely spiced with hearty potatoes. As well as the generous selection of fresh salads, I opted for an accompanying peshwari

naan bread while my guest braved the garlic naan with which must have been cooked with several cloves of garlic. Both were eagerly devoured and richly enjoyed. Feeling suitably stuffed we hesitated at a desert but both succumbed to the sweet kheer which could be best described as a very sweet rice pudding but very refreshing and light. A quick glance at the drinks list offered several well known draught beers which all seemed excellent value considering the average price of restaurant beers. The wine list also appeared extensive with prices topping out at £12.95 for a nice Chardonnay and £34.50 for the Moet Champagne. All in all both a great value meal and an enjoyable night out. We will certainly return to sample the weekend specials and the extensive menu. includes the new 2010 Steiff and Charlie Bear collectables of which The Bear Emporium is one of the main UK stockists. The British bear makers Merrythought celebrate their 80th birthday this year releasing Limited Edition bears including special 1930’s replicas. Lynne (A bear artist herself) makes her own range; ‘The Wishing Well Bears’ are individual, oneof-a-kind bears all of which are totally unique and inspired by the fabrics she sees on her travels! The Bear Emporium can produce bespoke bears made to order, which means a customer can design their own teddy safe in the knowledge that no-one else will have an identical

twin! They have a vast choice of fabrics in all textures and colours for if you have something specific in mind or just want a personalised design. The shop also stocks a large selection of trinkets and gift ideals, rag dolls, golly wogs, key rings and handmade cards. Running alongside the design, manufacture and supply is the unique Teddy Hospital, offering specialist health care for your bear, from a simple re-stuffing to major surgery following rips, wear and tear or even dog attacks! Each bear is sympathetically and lovingly restored by hand. They have successfully restored bears of all ages returning them to as near to their original state as possible. The teddy bear hospital is renowned up and down the country with people travelling from all over for their services. On Saturday 26th June 10am wile 4pm the shop is host to the ‘Sew What and Stuff It’ Event. A LESSON TO BE LEARNED experienced a bumper Saturday night, helped in no small part by the end of the mini heat wave which, fortunately, put a lot of BBQ plans on hold. What a shame that our boys in South Africa did little to heighten the mood of optimism ahead of next Friday’s second fixture, especially since the key third group match is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon! Slipping under the radar therefore are the year-end results for Majestic Wines, who have managed a staggering 15.6% growth in like-for-like sales, completely bucking the trend of results from breweries, off licence and pub chains alike. Even Tesco, despite their drastic slashing of drink prices, only managed a “disappoint-

“a good quality experience” rather than an obsession with price points and undercutting everyone else. Why are Majestic’s results so interesting? Simply because they contradict many of the claims that have been abounding in the “cheap booze” debate. The average bottle of still wine sold by Majestic is up in value – from £6.35 to £6.59. The number of transactions has increased by almost 16% - and the average transaction per customer has reached a heady high of £129.00. There is a strong message being sent out to the licensed trade, should anyone care to listen. Even in these austere times (and perhaps even more so because of the climate!) the consumer is looking for qual-

perhaps not of a sufficiently high quality, or simply wrong for the particular venue. Certain areas, for example Leeds, have a monthly showcase; an agent will put on several acts (often on a Wednesday night) and all the clubs send representatives to see what is new on the circuit. Some local agents are trying to replicate this; and one is taking place shortly, at Main Street Club in Mexborough, on June 23rd. However, the success of this venture will depend entirely on whether the Chairmen and Concert Secretaries can give it their backing. It would be great to get some feedback on this from the acts, agents and club committees, so drop us a line at the Mercury with your thoughts. Also don’t miss some of the fantastic events that the Mercury are arranging later on in the year – the more people we get through the doors in Clubland, the better it will be for everyone!

CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker

This month’s debate centres around the change in practice when clubs are booking acts. In the old days, a Concert Secretary would visit other venues to view acts before informing the agent who they wanted to book. However times have changed; life is busier and it seems the Secretaries, understandably, have less time to commit to the role, and more and more reliance is placed on the agent to supply entertainment of the right calibre. This causes its own problems; agents regularly perform “swaps” and often have to rely on the judgement of others; as a consequence there are times when the act that is booked is unseen and

SHOWTIME UK AGENT PROFILE by Paul Walker

It’s time this month to meet another of the agents who play such a big part in keeping Clubland alive – and this month I would like to feature Showtime UK, run by Cliff Matthews Jnr. With whom I’ve been associated personally as he represents “Fallen from Hell.” Cliff began life in Clubland in his father’s office – Cliff Matthews Snr. was a well-known figure, running a successful agency with Graham Platts, with a large stable of well-known acts and responsibility for a number of leading clubs. In 1996 Cliff Jnr decided to go it alone, and formed “Big Time” with Lee and Darren, before moving on to join Norman Thewliss and Barry Marshall in the “International Management” stable. Whilst in the office, he was

offered the chance to work in an act called “Nightshift” – he soon realised there was a lot of fun to be had on stage as well as in the back office, and whilst working with a group called “Joop” he met Stewart, and the idea of Showtime UK was born. Joining forces again with Darren, his original partner in Big Time, Coyote and AKA were his first acts, both featuring Stewart from Joop. Quickly following was Darren’s own act Foxy with the fabulous Sharon Lewis, and although Darren has since left, Cliff now boasts an impressive roster including Stevie Paver Jnr, Steve Costa, Alan Turner of Factor fame, Chris Carr, Bon Jovi tribute band Bad Medicine and of course Yours Truly! Cliff is always on the lookout for quality new talent, so give him a call on 01709 322779, as he is always happy to pass on advice and the benefit of his experience to aspiring newcomers.

earned money for a product which delivers an enjoyable experience. In other words, Mr Tesco - a tin of cheapo lager for a shade over ten bob is not the main motivation for us to go into your shop! And Mr Publican should also take note – we will drink your beer, at prices that enable you to make a living, provided you take the time and trouble to make the experience enjoyable! Be it good food, good entertainment, or simply a comfortable and pleasant ambience in which to relax – we will pay your prices, enjoy the experience, and return again – but you must work hard to give us what we want.

OUT & ABOUT CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker

When you see a full car park outside a club on Sunday night, you know there is something different happening, and so this Sunday I was intrigued to find out what was going on in Greasborough Club. As usual there was a vocalist – Steve Andrews was doing a great rendition of classics such as “Unchained Melody” – there was the usual bingo – but the big attraction on the night was ballroom dancing in between the usual offerings! There was a time when the younger generation thought that “waltz” was a fairground ride, or “tango” was a can of orange, but all that has been changed by “Strictly Come Dancing,” which has brought a new lease of life to ballroom dancing. So it’s great to see that a venue has had the initiative to introduce something that caters for members of all ages and offers something a little bit different by way of entertainment – congratulations to Greasborough! I would like to ask for a little bit of help on a personal note; I am trying to organise an all-day charity concert for Bank Holiday Monday in August, and we are looking for an outdoor venue with a stage to host nine or ten acts, sideshows, auctions and other stalls. Already the “Gents” are reforming specially for the day, “Black Rising” and “Men’s Club” have committed, and I am forming a special celebrity band for the night. The Rotherham Lions and the Hallamshire Neurology Department will be the chief beneficiaries, so leave space in your diary to support us!

We often read about how people are staying at home and drinking rather than going out. Well, if you care to come for a night out in Eckington there’s every reason to spend some time there and sample some of the great offers in the local pubs. There are 5 great pubs in Eckington and they have all joined together to give residents and near neighbours every reason to visit. At the bottom end there are 4 great pubs near to one another; The George, The Royal Hotel, The Angel, and the Duke of York. A little further up the road is another great venue, the Rose and Crown. Each of these has great offers on beers, lager and bottled beer and you can watch the World Cup in great company. When you’re not watching the football there’s entertainment which includes live music, DJ’s etc. Eckington really is a great night out if you want a drink and entertainment in good company without the expense and inconvenience of travelling into Sheffield or Chesterfield. Visit the pubs there and say hello to everyone from The Mercury.

JAZZ DOWN AT THE LESCAR

Wednesday 30th June sees Sarah Ellen Hughes visit The Lescar for a performance with her jazz trio. Vocalist Sarah has been making a name for herself in London – where she currently resides – having just released her first album, “Darning the Dream” to a full house at London’s famous 606 club. This May and June, Sarah has been touring the country to promote the album, which features appearances from Dave O’Higgins and Ian Shaw. Sarah recently became the first British singer to win the Grand Prix at the International Jazz Singing Competition “Jazz Voices”. She came away with the top prize, after beating 31 International contestants over a gruelling 3-day rehearsal and performance schedule. The performance The Lescar starts at 9pm and admission is £3. The Lescar, 303 Sharrow Vale Road, Sheffield, S11 8ZF. Sarah’s album, “Darning the Dream”, is available for purchase from Amazon, iTunes, HMV and many other retailers. Her 24-date UK tour is supported by Jazz Services, and continues throughout the country until the end of June. See her website www.sarahellenhughes.co.uk/gigs for all details.

My old friend Andy King is not well at all. I went to see him at the Northern General yesterday and I am sad to inform everyone that ‘Kingy’ is suffering from acute liver failure. Anyone that knows him, or has worked with him, will tell you that he is a ‘good lad’ and he can be most amusing. Some of the time this is not intentional it’s just his nature and character. Andy is best known a the frontman of Big Business the band that developed out of the highly successful Nassa. Previously he was was guitarist with John O’Hara and the Playboys and for some years he enjoyed solo success prior to joining Nassa. I worked with Andy for 7 years with Big Business and he was a great frontman and entertainer and I have laughed, almost to

PARLIAMENTARY SAVE THE PUB GROUP The post election re-launch meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group on Wednesday June 9th was attended by over a dozen MPs and saw Greg Mulholland MP (for Leeds North West) elected as the Chair; and Brian Binley MP (for Northampton South) and Lord Bilston as joint Vice Chairs. The meeting also appointed CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale to provide secretariat support to the Group and approved plans for the formation of a new Executive Committee of MPs and Peers. Greg Mulholland MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, said: ‘In the last Parliament the Save the Pub Group was successful in persuading the Government to take seriously the threats facing Britain’s pubs. The Group will build on this success in the new Parliament by effective campaigning on a whole range of issues including beer taxation, planning law, and reform of the beer tie. ‘Early priorities for the Group include maintaining progress on reform of the beer tie, working with the new Government on the Decentralisation and Localism Bill which will introduce a Community Right to Buy for pubs threatened with closure and the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill which will ban the below cost sale of alcohol.’ Jonathan Mail, CAMRA’s Head of Policy and Public Affairs, said: ‘CAMRA is looking forward to supporting the Save the Pub Group in its objective to preserve and protect the British Pub. CAMRA will also be supporting MPs to run pub campaigns in their local constituencies in partnership with pub licensees and pub goers. The Save the Pub Group will undoubtedly play a key role in ensuring the Coalition Government bring forward a package of policies to support and incentivise well-run pubs.’

DO BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN? MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas

All these years of hurt, can England do it? It’s finally here of course, the World Cup is underway in South Africa with our next game against Algeria taking place on Friday night. On the Magic Breakfast Show we’ve been talking about our chances. I heard an interesting comment during the TV coverage of our first game against the USA, making reference to our campaign not starting too well during the two previous competitions where we actually went on to perform at our best. Those being both the time we got to the semi finals, in Italy in 1990, and when we won in 1966. Can we win this year then? We’d like to hear from you in our simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ poll. Log on to our website at magicam.co.uk, look to the bottom right hand corner of the home page screen and cast your vote. Thanks to everyone who participated in our ‘Get Stripped’ day at the start of the World Cup last week too. No it didn’t involve my Magic DJ colleagues flaunting our beer bellies, just simply wearing our football shirts to work for the day and donating £2 each to our charity ‘Cash for Kids’ (previously ‘Help a Hallam Child’) to help the lives of underprivileged children in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. Keep listening for details of more fun charity days, and of course for more great music and prizes. If you’ve been tuned in over the last week or so, you will no doubt have heard our brand new Magic Word game. After months of incorrect guesses, a big well done to Paul Bailey of Rawmarsh who finally worked out that celebrity chef James Martin was commenting on Casualty being full “intoxicated ladies with bits of one leg hanging off”. Talk to you back on air weekday mornings 6 to 10am

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally Cancer Awareness – It might just make all the difference Stella Mekonnen, NHS Sheffield

There are about 2,500 new diagnoses of cancer every year in Sheffield. We are living longer and 70% of cancers occur in the over 60s. The most common cancers for this age group are lung, breast, bowel, prostate, stomach, pancreatic and bladder. Compared to the rest of Europe people in the UK tend to have more advanced stage of breast and bowel cancer by the time they are treated. One explanation for this may be our national characteristic of being “a bit reticent”. Cancer is still a taboo illness for many and there is a lot of fear surrounding the disease, but the fact is, the earlier you are treated the much better your chance of making a full recovery. We can’t do anything about getting older, but we can minimize our risks and keep an eye on any changes in our bodies. We recommend that you: • Know what is normal for you • Self examine regularly • Participate in screening programmes • Report any changes, however vague, to your doctor. DON’T JUST PUT THESE CHANGES DOWN TO GETTING OLD! See your doctor if you notice: • A lump or a sore which does not heal, including one in the mouth • A mole which changes in shape or colour • Any abnormal bleeding • A persistent cough, hoarseness or breathlessness • Changes in your toilet routine • Any unexpected weight loss or feelings of tiredness Know your body and what is normal for you; check your breasts, skin and testicles regularly for any unexplained

Lord Mayor celebrates young people’s valuable contribution to society On a wonderful bright sunny morning the Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Alan Law invited children and young people from Shortbrook School and Westfield Sports College into his parlour to hear how their innovative and creative approach to improving services within in the Westfield area of Sheffield was progressing. Sheffield City Council has purchased the Public House previously known as the Golden keys from Youth Capital National Funding stream and young people are leading on shaping and

changes in their look or feel. There are three national cancer screening programmes designed to detect cancer in its very early stages. They are there for you so if you don’t already, please take up the opportunity to participate in these programmes. Bowel Screening – both men and women age 60 up to 75 will automatically receive a home screening kit in the post every two years (so long as you are registered with a GP), if you are older or you think you have misplaced your kit, you can still request a test to be sent to you by calling the helpline number on 0800 707 6060. Breast Screening – all women aged 47 to 74 will be invited every 3 years for screening, over this age you are entitled to request a mammogram by calling the Breast Screening Centre on 0114 271 1920. Cervical Screening – women between 50 and 65 will be invited for cervical screening every 5 years. Above this age you will be invited if you have not had a test since you were 50, or if your 3 most recent results were abnormal. Above this age, a woman’s risks of developing cervical cancer are greatly reduced. There are national legal requirements on waiting times and there are a number of waiting time targets for cancer. One of them is a 2 week wait for an out patients appointment following an urgent GP referral of suspected cancer. If you feel you are not being treated in accordance with the guidelines, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service at NHS Sheffield on 0800 085 7539 and they will help with any problems you are experiencing. Remember, there is still a lot you can do to continue to reduce your risks of getting cancer and they include: maintain a healthy balanced diet and weight, keep as active as you can, moderate your alcohol intake and, if you smoke, STOP. Stella is working to promote Cancer Health Awareness and is available to talk to groups. Her contact details are 0114 305 1077 designing the building. The young people are working on this project with SCC’s Integrated Youth Support Services and Premises Team, Sheffield Futures, Sheffield United’s Kickz Programme, Westfield Tenants and Residents Association, Sheffield 50+ and the Westfield Stakeholders. After presenting their progress report the children and young people were presented with certificates to recognise their substantial contribution to their community from the Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor said “It is absolutely fantastic that Children, Young People and local families from the Westfield area are actively involved in making this a flagship project and are making a real difference. I was extremely pleased to be able commend them for all their hard work”.

CHILD RESIDENCE & MAINTENANCE

Solicitor Emily Abbey of Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors answers questions on child maintenance and residence. I am separating from my partner and each of us wants our children to live with us. How is it decided who the children will live with? It is of overriding importance for any children involved to have a stable and safe place to live. In most cases the children will live primarily with one parent and the other parent will have regular contact. Who the children live with can be negotiated with the help of a solicitor, collaborative lawyer or mediator. Factors influencing the outcome include whether one party has historically undertaken more of the day to day care than the other, the wishes and feelings of the children (considered in light of their age and understanding), the likely impact of any change and who is better placed to meet the ongoing future needs of the children. In practice the law prefers voluntary agreements between parents rather than court imposed settlements as it feels that voluntary agreements are more likely to succeed in the long run. The courts will only usually become involved if both parents are unable to reach a suitable compromise. If a case does get to court then the court can order a ‘residence order’ setting out who the children should live with. In some cases shared residence orders are made for the children. For this to work it has to be in the childrens best interests and practical for the children to move regularly between homes without it being too disruptive and unsettling for them. Older childrens wishes and feelings are taken into account too in light of their age and understanding. How much child maintenance do I have to pay? All parents have a responsibility to provide financial support to their children, regardless of whether or not they have contact with them. Child maintenance and contact are not legally related. Child maintenance is the payment of a regular sum of money to support the child’s living costs and is payable by the parent who the child is not resident with. (In cases of shared residence the arrangements may differ.) Child maintenance can be arranged by agreement between both parents, with the help of a solicitor, or through the Child Support Agency (CSA). The CSA use a set formula, which takes into account the parents’ net income, number of children and number of overnight stays spent with that parent. For example if the child stays overnight one night a week then the amount of maintenance can be reduced to reflect this. All About Eckington The name Eckington originates from Saxon times and means the township of Ecca. Eckington is located in north-east Derbyshire, just seven miles north-east of Chesterfield and has a population of about 11,000. It is a picturesque village of manor houses and cottages built from the local Derbyshire stone. The main occupations of Eckington were farming and mining but after the local pits were closed a number of light industries were established and a great deal of farming land was lost to building development. In 1998, a regeneration project was launched to battle the effects of mine closures and out of town retail developments. A market is held each Friday on pedestrianised Market Street giving the centre of the village a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. The Civic Centre, also on Market Street, is used for a great number of functions and activities and stands proudly beside the swimming pool and library. A notable landmark of Eckington is the parish church of St Peter and St Paul which dates from the year 1100. It boasts exceptional and well-preserved architectural features, including an original Norman doorway. Another architectural highlight of the village is the rectory – a late Georgian house with Venetian windows. A popular town trail will allow you to take in the parish church, along with a cruck barn which part dates back to the 16th-century and Coldwell’s Cottage - the last remaining thatched cottage in Eckington. Sir Reresby and Lady Sitwell live at Renishaw Hall. The beautiful house is located on the outskirts of Eckington, one mile from the village’s centre and is surrounded by parkland and a golf course. Renishaw Hall has been the family home of the Sitwell family for nearly 400 years. It has gained fame through the writing of Edith Osbert and Sacheverell Sitwell, father of the present owner. A novel feature at the hall is the vineyard begun in 1972.

In Association with

What spoils your angling? Fishing is a hobby which should be relaxing, peaceful and enjoyable, but sometimes it can leave you more stressed than when you set out! I had a chat with one of the staff at Bennett’s of Sheffield recently whilst I was working on a feature there, and we got onto the subject of litter. To be honest, it’s just one of those things that shouldn’t be an issue, but unfortunately it is because of the actions of a few ‘anglers’ who spoil it for the rest of us. What constitutes litter though? The general consensus was that it is something you bring with you, but then choose to leave behind when you leave the fishery. Fair enough; but what happens if you arrive at your peg and there is already rubbish lying around? Does it then become your litter…..? If we are being direct, then no, it’s not your refuse, but it could be your responsibility if the fishery rules state ‘no litter’, and what of the moral obligations? I have always taught my kids to pick up or put in their pocket any litter they generate so why should it be different at a fishery? European laws now place somewhat draconian regulations on waste collection from fisheries. Local venues must both apply (and pay) for waste transfer licences, or put the emphasis on the angler to collect and take their rubbish home with them. Simple answer is to get you to take it home; it’s not an unreasonable request from any fishery owner who allows you to enjoy your sport on his land. Before you say “I pay for the privilege”, yes, you do, but does it mean it isn’t to be treated with basic respect for others around you and the environment? Some of the things I’ve come across on my visits to various fisheries around our area have to be seen to be believed; aside from the Monday morning Stella crate debris, fast food tubs, cigarette ends and ‘Millets’ packaging from first time overnighters, I’ve found dirty clothing, used needles, bags of glue and who knows what else! This brings me nicely onto the subject of foul litter, i.e. bodily waste. There is little that annoys me more on a lovely warm summer day 5 Individual Lakes

than to walk around the back of my bivvy or brolly when I’m pegging it out and tread in someone else’s faeces!! It may be hidden by long grass, wrapped in toilet roll or whatever, but I bet I’m not the only angler who has stood in it!! My current club rules state that all anglers should have adequate toilet facilities available which will be checked by bailliffs. A great idea; a small lidded bucket with a plastic bag liner prevents any unecessary filth on the bank. Its not the nicest ‘job’ to dispose of, but it helps reduce the amount left on the bank side which can only be a good thing! To be more considerate to our fellows, there are just a few small things we can all do to make our fisheries cleaner, nicer and smell a bit better; pick it up, bin it; simples!! STARTER’S ORDERS HORSE RACING by Timelord

Royal Ascot After last week’s famine this week we have a veritable feast of top class racing at Royal Ascot. Five days of the best flat racing are on offer from Tuesday until Saturday. If you want better flat racing than this you will have to go a long way to see it. However, as with all racing that is this good, it is always ultra-competitive so be careful with your selections. These are generally top class animals that can all win on their day. I have tried to keep faith with the value approach throughout the five days. I expect some of these to be pretty reasonable each way prices as the markets are strong at this meeting. As the racing is so competitive I have many of these closely rated together. I have therefore given other possible alternatives to consider in case of withdrawals, non-runners or to suit your own preferences. I’m not going to do too much writing about these as their records speak for themselves. However Goldikova can kick the meeting off with a win and Dick Turpin looks to have decent prospects of turning the form round with Makfi in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Wednesday looks typically difficult but I do quite strongly fancy Kasbah Bliss for the Gold Cup on Thursday. So, without further ado, here are my selections: Tuesday: 2.30 Goldikova (likely favourite, but with a favourite’s chance; e/w Pipedreamer);

STEELERS ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle

“Meet The Management” Forum for Steelers Fans Sheffield Steelers HQ this week invited all of the fanbase to an open discussion forum to be held at Abbeydale Sports Club on Thursday 24th June (7:30pm). “This will give all of our fans the opportunity to meet the new management team, to hear all about the exciting changes we have planned, to hear all about the work that is being undertaken to market the club in a more dynamic way than ever before, and most importantly, the team that is being put together to bring you a fantastic next season on the ice. It will give you all an opportunity to ask questions and have your say on issues that you feel strongly about. All of the supporter groups will be in attendance and we hope that as many fans as possible can make it.” Fans will also be able to talk to and ask questions of FAB (Fans’ Advisory Board), the SSSC (Sheffield Steelers Supporters’ Club), and the Dronfield and Bassetlaw Bandits fan groups.

SHEFFIELD EAGLES

RUGBY LEAGUE by Jim Collins Whitehaven 14 Sheffield Eagles 24

Sheffield Eagles produced a late two-try burst to beat Whitehaven in an emotion charged game. The ground was silent before the kick-off as Ros Purdham, the wife of former Haven player Garry Purdham, released 12 white doves in memory of her husband and the other 11 victims of the West Cumbria shootings. The Eagles had to work hard for their win, but they also made hard work of claiming three vital points in the chase for a play-off place. Coach Mark Aston’s decision to play four forwards on the bench paid off as the big men gradually wore down a determined Whitehaven team. Centre Menzie Yere scored two tries but the game-breaker score came from hooker Craig Cook as the lead changed for the fifth time in the game. It was Cook’s 18th try of the season. Mike Burnett, on loan from Hull FC, came into the second row. Tim Bergin returned on the wing with Tangi Ropati also moving out wide and Jason Mossop coming in at centre. Eagles put in some strong defence to hold out Whitehaven early in the game with Misi Taulapapa and Bergin covering well at the back. If the Eagles had built on some good drives by forwards Mitch Stringer and Ryan Hepworth and used positions better they could have led at the break. . Instead the Eagles trailed to a try from dummy half by winger Derry Eilbeck ten minutes before the break. The opening of the second half was very different as Cook and stand-off Brendon Lindsay combined to send second rower Peter Green crashing over for a try. The Eagles took the lead when after Stringer and Ged Corcoran had set up the position before Lindsay collected his own chip and passed out to Yere - who had been threat-

ing with some of his runs but had been closed down quickly by Whitehaven - to finish. Lindsay was unable to add either goal. Whitehaven retook the lead with a Craig Calvert try and Carl Rudd goal before the Eagles came back with breaks by Trevor Exton and Misi Taulapapa opening the way for Yere to touchdown for his second try. Winger Tim Bergin took over the kicking duties but his effort agonisingly hit the outside of a post. The lead didn’t last as Calvert scored his second try and there were a few scares close to the try line before in the final nine minutes the Eagles took control. Cook twisted and turned from dummy half, looked around for a runner to pass to but with nobody there saw a gap open and did the job himself touching down under the posts. Bergin kicked the goal. With a minute to go Lindsay made the game safe as his chip was fumbled by the Haven fullback Josh Veivers and the stand-off kicked on again and completed the try. Bergin added the goal. Whitehaven: Josh Veivers; Derry Eilbeck, Dexter Miller, Rob Jackson, Craig Calvert; Carl Rudd, Motu Tony; Andy Thornley, Greame Mattinson, Kyle Bibb, Spencer Miller, Danny Barker, Leroy Joe. Subs: Carl Sice, Howard Hill, Kurt Wilton, Mark Jackson. Tries: Eilbeck (29), Calvert (55, 69). Goals: Rudd 1/3. THE GROUND IS ALIVE, WITH THE SOUND OF…HORNS!

WEEKLY FANS COLUMN by Jon Warburton On a thread taken from a Sheffield United internet messaging board, one recent poster demanded that the club make an immediate statement on an issue very close to his heart. He insisted that a very firm stance be taken on the issue to ensure that goings on at Bramall Lane did not descend into farce. The issue in question was of course that of the vuvuzela. Anyone who has been surgically attached to their television as I have since last Friday’s World Cup opener between South Africa and Mexico, will have been forgiven for attempting to alter their sound settings. The vuvuzela is a metre long trumpet like instrument, synonymous with South African football culture. The sound of a 90,000 sell out crowd playing these in unison has been likened to the buzz of a swarm of bees, or a stampede of elephants. In general, any reference to the instrument has not been positive. There have been calls from fans, players and broadcasters that the ‘intrusive’ horn should be banned, due to the detrimental effect it is apparently having on our enjoyment of the beautiful game. I have never been a fan of this type of device after its like dominated a particularly ill fated play off defeat of ours back in 2003, and the scars still run deep. However, the sheer arrogance that we can go to another country and demand that a mainstay of their football culture be banned because ‘we don’t like it’ is utterly ridiculous. Imagine if England were to secure the World Cup in 2018, and five days into the tournament South African fans called for a banning of clapping and singing as it was drowning out the sound of their vuvuzela? You get the picture. All I would say is that while it is their culture, it is most certainly not ours, and reports that supermarkets in the UK sold tens of thousands of the things over the weekend creates cause for concern. For this reason I echo the sentiments that opened the article: Mr McCabe, act now!!!

SPEED AWARDED MBE

Although born in Deeside Speed began his career with Leeds, winning the league title in 1992, before moving on to represent Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and eventually United. Kevin Blackwell said: “I remember trying to sign him when I was at Leeds United so it was great to have him here at Bramall Lane. “It was a privilege to have him in the team and it is a pity that it only lasted a few months because

of his back problems but I am so pleased he has been honoured in this way.” On of the most respected players in the last two decades, Gary is Wales’ most capped outfield International, scoring seven times in 85 appearances. He becomes the second Sheffield United employee to be made an MBE, following the late Derek Dooley.

BOSS ON BRITTON

is his football ability that marks him out: “This is a big signing for us and you only have to look at what some respected watchers have been saying about him, that he has been the best midfielder in the Championship for the last two years. “As recently as January Wigan offered £0.75m for him and their manager Roberto Martinez speaks very highly of him. “Last season in tight games we

lacked the sort of player who could pick a pass to win a game, and I am doubly delighted to get him whilst he is out of contract because we ourselves have been victim to that on a few occasions. “It looked like being a losing battle a few weeks ago when Premiership interest stalled our bid, but he looked at everything and said that he wants to come here.”

IRVINE REFLECTS ON POSITIVE WEEK

pleased these signings have all happened. Now I am trying to get some more players in. “I said we needed eight and that’s four done, now I will look at the budget and see what else we can do. Like I have said many times before, we have to deal within the constraints of the budget. The club have worked very hard to give me the budget they have given me, which I appreciate in what are very difficult times for clubs. I am happy with the way it’s gone so far.” Irvine has strengthened all outfield areas with his four signings so far and highlighted the need to bolster his options for what is sure to be a demanding campaign ahead in League One. He reasoned: “It’s vitally important we have strength in depth. Not just in terms of competition but having the right kind of cover if there’s an injury or a suspension and we certainly were vulnerable in certain areas last season. “We were fortunate in that we didn’t get players in certain positions out injured for any period of time because had we done, we’d

have ended up with square pegs in round holes.” While the hunt for more new players continues, the clock counts down to the first day of July, when the revamped squad’s preparations kick off in earnest. And Irvine is eagerly anticipating the start of pre-season training as he looks to banish the gloom of last term’s relegation. He concluded: “I’m eager to get started and very keen for 1 July to come around, when we can start to shape things for the new season. Pre-season is a time I always look forward to, it’s a time when a lot of managers and coaches are at their happiest because you can get some proper work done on the training ground without worrying about the outcome of games. “Whereas once the season starts you always have to bear in mind what impact training has to the outcome of games. It’s certainly not a case of forgetting about what happened last season, I don’t know if I will ever forget that, but I’m looking forward with a lot of enthusiasm to getting started on 1 July.”

“I am pleased with the outcome of the investigation as it fully vindicates our matchday operation here at Hillsborough and underlines the fact that the club did everything possible in its planning and preparation to manage any incidents following what was an extremely tense game against Crystal Palace.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Sheffield United are delighted that Gary Speed has been awarded an MBE. The Blades coach has enjoyed an outstanding career at club and International level and held the record for most appearances in the Premier League with 535 until David James overtook him in 2009.

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Following his capture of Leon Britton Kevin Blackwell revealed that the acquisition would enable United to have the sort of platform they have not enjoyed in recent years. Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has reflected positively on a productive week in the transfer market that saw four new recruits commit to the Owls. Chris Sedgwick, Jon Otsemobor, Paul Heffernan and Daniel Jones each agreed S6 deals and Irvine is delighted that the many hours of ground work ultimately came to fruition. He said: “It’s not just been this week, of course, all the initial discussions and finding out about players that might be available has been going on for some time. A lot of the work of this week was actually done while I was on holiday so I’m delighted the fact that I did have my phone on while I was on holiday proved to be beneficial. “It would have been very galling if I’d had it on every single day for different periods of the day and not had any rewards, so I’m

Sheffield Wednesday will face no charges following an FA investigation into crowd disorder after the home game with Crystal Palace on 2 May. Having completed a thorough review of the incidents in question, the FA are completely satisfied by the way in which the Owls complied with mandatory ground regulations and the club was absolved as a result. An FA spokesman has confirmed that the Club will face no further action in this matter. SWFC Stadium Operations Manager John Rutherford said:

GREEN GAFFE GIFTS POINT TO USA WORLD CUP by Neil Cardwell After taking an early lead with a well worked Steven Gerrard opener in the 4th minute of the game, a mistake by goalkeeper Robert Green cost England two valuable points in their opening game in Group C of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. England had the best possible start to a game when they were awarded a throw in that was eventually worked to Emile Heskey on the edge of the US penalty area. With his back to goal, Heskey play a sublime reverse pass into the path of Gerrard. The Liverpool and England captain finished past Tim Howard in the US goal giving the Everton goalkeeper no chance of making a save. To the incessant cacophony of the African vuvuzelas that have become a feature of every game in the World Cup so far, England dominated play after scoring goal. However, the US did settle into the game after conceding the early goal and looked dangerous when they got forward on the break and from set pieces, particularly when the English defence fell asleep when they needed to defend short

FIXTURE LISTS corner routines. There were chances at both ends of the park, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu all going close for the Americans, whilst Heskey and Aaron Lennon had good chances for England. Lennon’s shot was blocked, Howard saved from Heskey. James Milner was being given a bit of a roasting by American right back Steve Cherundolo. After a third foul by the Aston Villa player the referee produced a yellow card and shortly afterwards Fabio Cappello saw fit to substitute him. Left sided player Joe Cole was overlooked and instead Shaun Wright-Phillips, who normally plays on the right, was brought on to play in Milner’s place. His pace started to cause problems for the Americans and Cherundolo was shown the yellow card by the referee. Then on 40 minutes the unthinkable happened. A tame shot from Dempsey was fumbled by Green and the ball ended up in the back of the net despite the flailing arms and desperate attempts to get to the ball before it crossed the goal line by the hapless England goalkeeper. Further bad news came at the restart of the second half with Ledley King having to be substituted due to an injury. Jamie

Carragher came on to replace him to play alongside John Terry at centre back. Despite looking to lack pace in the centre of defence, England once again started to dominate the game with the pace of Lennon and Wright-Phillips causing problems for the American defence. Heskey was also clean through on the US goal, but could only fire his shot straight at Howard. At the other end of the park the US looked very dangerous and a repeat of the infamous 1950 defeat to the US in Brazil looked likely when Green pulled off a save to deny Altidore. On 79 minutes England made their third substitution with Peter Crouch coming on to replace Heskey. England then started to play much longer up to Crouch’s head, but without threatening the US goal. The game finished with the American players celebrating the draw in a style that would have befitted a convincing victory. The English will have returned to their training camp with their manager pondering what to do about a goal shy attack, a shaky defence lacking pace at the centre and a goalkeeper whose confidence must have been affected by a costly mistake.
