FESTIVAL PLEDGES TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Last year’s Tramlines saw over 400 litres of paper, 2080 litres of plastic and 560 litres of aluminium recycled from the outdoor element of the festival alone – and that’s before you count what each of the 35 venues recycled. Sustainability is back on the agenda this year, with Sheffield Is My Planet getting involved to help reduce the environmental impact the festival has on the city. The partnership will see the festival’s carbon footprint reduced, while encouraging festival
goers to change their behaviour for the better. Initiatives include: • A solar powered headphone disco on Devonshire Green between 6-10pm on Saturday 24 July and Sunday 25 July •Cheap accommodation for festival goers via Unite. •Carbon pledges – take a shower instead of a bath or recycle those empty beer bottles, for instance. See Sheffield Is My Planet’s website for more. • The use of recycled and recyclable print wherever possible, and Biodiesel to
power the site’s generators. • Major recycling areas at all of the outdoor stages, and a daily recycling programme for the indoor venues and traders. With your help, we can make Tramlines as environmentally friendly as possible – do your bit! Building on the success of last year, this year’s Tramlines festival will take place between Friday 23rd - Sunday 25th July 2010 as part of Sheffield Music City. Tramlines had a fantastic start last year with 30 venues and five outdoor stages
putting on a massive free music showcase in the city. Sheffield’s free urban music festival saw over 35,000 people take to the city centre in its first year, and this year that figure is expected to rise to over 50,000 revellers. This year the Main Stage on Devonshire Green has been expanded to host 8,000, and there’s some new additions including a New Music Stage on Tudor Square and a new Youth Music Festival. Keep your eyes on our Facebook and Twitter pages for more news.

This week saw the long overdue return to St Leonards Church at Dinnington, Sheffield to broadcast a special Sunday service live to the patients back at the hospital. Our last visit to St Leonards was back in 2008 to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. This week congregations from different denominations of churches came together to celebrate Fathers Day. The service was led by the Rector of St Leonards, the Rev Jane Bolton and consisted of readings and poems all with a Fatherly theme. The choir and congregation were in great voice for the hymns and were joined by The Wells Singers who also performed three numbers. The Wells Singers are a local group of singers, originally from North and South Anston Methodist churches. Named after their origins from the North Anston Church, known as the Chapel in The Wells, the group can perform a variety of types of music but remained focussed on music in keeping with the service this time. The service was broadcast to the patients at the hospital, as an entertainment for all but especially for those who are regular attendees of church to help reduce the isolation experienced by being in hospital. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www. radionightingale.org.uk Current volunteer vacancies: • Saturday sports show presenter • Football commentator • Request collector (Tuesday or Wednesday morning) • Fundraiser • Voice over artist / creator Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

COPLEY’S COLUMN The nation is in mourning, thanks to a bunch of pathetic, spoilt individuals, collectively known as the England football team. They were disgraceful against Algeria, so bad in fact that a brown bird had settled on top of the Algerian goal, and was never disturbed. My confidence in Fabio Capello has evaporated, but of course, four weeks ago, it was written into his contract that was he to leave prematurely, he would receive 9.6 million pounds, and therefore he has plenty to gain either way. A football manager is the best job in the world, being the only post that you can make a complete mess of, and you receive life changing money to go and there is a queue of other clubs who will give you immediate employment. This newspaper will be in circulation at the time of Wednesday’s crucial game, and I pray to God that the wonderful English support is rewarded with qualification to the next round. Shopping at the retail park at junction 28 on Sunday for some holiday shorts, I was amazed at the number of outlets still selling England shirts, scarves and many other novelty items. Realistically, with mediocre opposition like U.S.A. and Algeria, we should be home and hosed by now. There was great news, however, on the rugby front with England performing the unthinkable, a victory, albeit by only one point against Australia on their home turf. The look of pride on the faces of the victorious team was a joy to behold, and all the players performing week in, week out, for a fraction of the
money received by their footballing counterparts. Sunday was father’s day, and although my dad, who was my hero, passed away thirty seven years ago, there has not been a day that I have not thought about him with much love. I had a great morning with my daughter, Rosanne, but couldn’t help feeling envious of those dads who not only had children of their own to spend some time with but also had a dad as well. I found the best alternative by borrowing my girlfriend Caron’s dad, Arthur, who is a smashing man, as my dad for the day. I am at present, with the help of Andrew Platts, managing editor of the Mercury, arranging a tribute night for my good friend Glen Dale, who had his leg amputated recently. More details will be revealed closer to the date, September 3rd, but I can tell you that Paul Shane, of Hi de Hi fame. Scott Anson, Stephanie King and Glen’s two sons have already promised to support the evening to pay homage to a great entertainer. The full extent of the financial mess that this country is in as a result of Gordon Brown’s mis-management of the economy is now being fully realised, with according to that font of all knowledge, the Daily Star, reporting that we in fact actually owe £4.8 trillion pounds, equivalent to every British subject owing £78, 000. Treasury forecasts put the figure at £772 million, but the figure rises dramatically when public sector pensions and the money used to bail out the banks is added on. During my ten years of writing this
column, I have consistently warned of the dangers of New Labour. Regrettably, my sound advice, until the last election, has fallen on deaf ears. Sadly, the worst affected is South Yorkshire, where an Alsatian dog with a red rosette would have a great chance of being elected. Now, the faithful will have to endure severe cuts as a result and will probably lay all the blame on Messrs. Cameron and Clegg. I have every confidence that they will sort out the problem, albeit with stringent cuts, and I suggest that they should take advice from Richard Branson and Alan Sugar, two proven entrepreneurs, who will have great knowledge in how to reduce the deficit. I went on Friday to a public house, close to my home, for the first time to see an up and coming band, The Score. It was a late start, as I, like many others, had stayed in to watch the awful England match against Algeria. The Score are a great band, full of enthusiasm, but have had problems getting a settled line up. Guest lead guitar on the evening was Firecracker‘s Chris Firminger, who was so proficient, he looked as if he had played with the band for ever. Regular lead guitarist Marvin was fulfilling a previous booking, but is now back full time. New bass player, John, acquitted himself very well as did the other band members, Haley, Brendan and Keel. The prestigious Mercury Awards night will soon be upon us, so don’t forget to get your votes in for your favourite acts.
This year’s Disney On Ice spectacular will celebrate two very special anniversaries 100 Years of Magic, and the fact that this will be the 20th Disney On Ice show to perform at the Sheffield Arena! Back in 1991, the year in which the Arena opened, Disney On Ice debuted here with Mickey’s Diamond Jubilee and followed every year with an ice spectacular In 2010, 100 Years of Magic sees Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their friends from Disney’s Mulan, The Lion King and Pinocchio, and Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, will be taking to the ice while Stitch from Lilo & Stitch drops in to wreak his usual havoc during this grand celebration in Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic. Produced by Feld Entertainment, this fanfare production features more than 60 unforgettable Disney stars that span the decades, a sing-along score of awardwinning Disney music, stunning choreography, elaborate sets and beautiful costumes. With Mickey and Minnie leading the fun, audiences enjoy breathtaking production numbers choreographed by Emmy Award®-winner Sarah Kawahara. Kawahara previously worked with Michelle Kwan and choreographed the skating segment for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Complementing Kawahara’s fabulous skate sequences are the memorable tunes compiled by music directors Art Kempel
and Stan Beard that bring the wonderful memories of Disney to life on ice. Scenic Designer David Potts and Lighting Designer LeRoy Bennett create the mood and settings that showcase extraordinary Disney moments. Outfitting this cast of more than 60 characters was the challenge facing Costume Designer Scott Lane. His dazzling designs range from Mickey’s Marching Band, to the “it’s a small world” dolls, to the stars of Mulan and Finding Nemo. The bright colors and minimal structure in the Nemo costumes allow the characters to move freely in order to mimic the natural movement in water. Renowned designer Bob Mackie also lends his talents to a red sequined evening gown worn by Minnie. Scenic Designer David Potts, who has worked on numerous Broadway productions, creates a theatrical atmosphere on ice. Skaters weave around and enliven the “it’s a small world” sequence amidst sparkling floats that turn into a radiant light parade; a blanket of snow and an avalanche fall as Mulan battles the Huns; and a giant present is opened to reveal Buzz Lightyear as he’s first introduced to that favorite toy cowboy, Woody and his pal Jessie. Tickets for Disney On Ice celebrates 100 years of Disney Magic at Sheffield Arena on 16th - 21st November are available online through this web site at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk, through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or in person at the Sheffield Arena Box Office.

Hairy Situation My neighbour found out that her dog ( a Schnauzer) could hardly hear, so she took it to the veterinarian. The vet found that the problem was hair in the dog’s ears. He cleaned both ears, and the dog could then hear fine. The vet then proceeded to tell the lady that, if she wanted to keep this from recurring, she should go to the chemist and get some “Nair” hair remover and rub it in the dog’s ears once a month. The lady went to the chemist and bought some “Nair” hair remover. At the register, the pharmacist told her, “If you’re going to use this under your arms, don’t use deodorant for a few days.” The lady said, “I’m not using it under my arms.” The pharmacist said, “If you’re using it on your legs, don’t shave for a couple of days.” The lady replied, “I’m not using it on my legs either. If you must know, I’m using it on my Schnauzer.” The pharmacist says, “Well stay off your bicycle for about a week.” OBSERVING THE BABY Observing The Baby One night a wife found her husband standing over their baby’s crib. Silently she watched him. As he stood looking down at the sleeping infant, she saw on his face a mixture of emotions: disbelief, doubt, delight, amazement, enchantment, scepticism. Touched by this unusual display and the deep emotions it aroused, with eyes glistening she slipped her arm around her husband. “A penny for your thoughts,” she said. “It’s amazing!” he replied. “I just can’t see how anybody can make a crib like that for only £46.50.” WHO REALLY WEARS THE TROUSERS There were three men talking in the pub. Two of them are talking about the amount of control they have over their wives, while the third man remains quiet. After a while one of the first two turns to the third and says “Well, what about you, what sort of control do you have over your wife?” The third fellow says “I’ll tell you. Just the other night my wife came to me on her hands and knees.” The first two blokes where amazed. “What happened then?” they asked. “She said ‘GET OUT FROM UNDER THE BED AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN!’.” THE ESCAPED CONVICT An escaped convict broke into a house and tied up a young couple who had been sleeping in the bedroom. As soon as he had a chance, the husband turned to his voluptuous young wife, bound up on the bed in a skimpy nightgown, and whispered, “Honey, this guy hasn’t seen a woman in years. Just cooperate with anything he wants. If he wants to have sex with you, just go along with it and pretend you like it. Our lives depend on it.” “Dear,” the wife hissed, spitting out her gag, “I’m so relieved you feel that way, because he just told me he thinks you are really cute!”

CHANTEL BRINGS THE BLUES HOME
DIZZEE MY HEAD IS SPINNING!
Blues-beauty set to make an intimate home turf Yorkshire appearance. Blues-rock megastar Chantel McGregor will be hitting her home county of Yorkshire with a date at Sheffield’s Corporation venue on Saturday 10th July. Having played sell-out shows across the country and Europe and gaining a devoted fan base, she brings her Awakening tour to Sheffield to much anticipation and excitement. Chantel has shared the stage with the likes of blues master Joe Bonamassa, Andy Powell’s Wishbone Ash and she even had a personal invite from Deborah Bonham (sister of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham) to jam with her on stage at a show earlier this year. Her fans, critics and fellow musos alike just can’t fail to love Chantel’s smooth style and appreciate her immense talent. Speaking of her upcoming Sheffield date, Chantel said, “I can’t wait to play Sheffield. I love travelling and playing so many nice places and visiting Europe, but coming home to Yorkshire is always special and exciting for me.” The Sheffield show is in the middle of a tour which see’s her make appearances at many rock and blues festivals across the UK and Europe this summer. This is your chance to catch Chantel on home turf and enjoy her in the intimacy of the Corporation… while you still can! Advance tickets are available from Corporation from Monday 21st June priced at £8 (£10 on the door). Doors open at 7pm and Chantel will be taking to the stage at 8.30pm and providing a meet and greet with fans after the show. Support will be announced soon.
East London’s most infamous Rascal plays a one off special show at the O2 Academy on the 24th to warm up for the festival season. Dylan Kwabena Mills, better known by his stage name Dizzee Rascal, for those not in the know is a British rapper, songwriter and record producer of Nigerian and Ghanaian descent. His music is a blend of Garage, Hip-Hop, Grime, Ragga, Pop and electronic music, with extremely eclectic samples and more exotic styles. Best known for his number-one hits “Dance wiv Me”, “Bonkers”, “Holiday”, “Dirtee Disco” & “Shout”, his debut album, Boy in da Corner, won him the 2003 Mercury Prize. Follow-up albums Showtime, Maths + English and Tongue n’ Cheek have all been critically acclaimed and certified gold, the latter going platinum for sales exceeding 300,000 units. Mills was born in Bow, east London. His father died when he was young, and he was raised for most of his life in a single-parent family by his Ghanaianborn mother, Priscilla, who did the best she could for her rebellious son. He says: “I had issues as a kid. I was violent and disruptive. The way my mum helped was by finding me a different school every time I got kicked out, always fighting to keep me in the school system”. He attended a series of schools in East London, excluded from four secondary schools in four years - it was a teacher who first called him “Rascal”. Cagey about exactly what his youthful “madnesses” entailed, in early interviews he mentioned fighting with teachers, stealing cars and robbing pizza delivery men! His music is a mixture of UK Garage and hip-hop beats with an extremely broad palette of influences, ranging from metal guitars to found sound, drill and bass synth lines, eclectic samples and even Japanese court music. It can best be summarised as a high-octane tribal skank, or even an unreconstructed step-up council skank; Dizzee also makes extensive use of un-coupled octuplets and double and triple couplets in his machine-gun-paced staccato lyrics. Like most grime artists, he uses “beats born of ringtones, video games and staticky pirate-radio sounds” In 2004, Dizzee Rascal made an international endorsement deal with urban brand Ecko and designed his own shoe with Nike in 2005. The recent re-release of the album Tongue N’ Cheek with a few new tracks added included a song called Dirtee Disco

which was released on 24th May, went straight to Number 1 on the UK singles chart and as a result gave Dizzee the record for the most number one singles on an album by a solo male artist, and he is to perform at the 2010 Reading and Leeds Festivals, on the 28th and 27th of August respectively, below The Libertines and headliners Arcade Fire. In July 2008 Rascal’s ex girlfriend Kaya Bousquet, whom he had dated for two years died in a high speed crash on the M1 motorway, which Dizzee was said to be “devastated” by. Rascal revealed in 2010 that he plans not to use drugs or alcohol at all in the future. He told The Independent: “I’m not having any alcohol. No weed. I’m not doing anything – except some boxing to release energy. (Dizzee rapping eye of the tiger.. anyone?). Dizzee Rascal: O2 Academy, Thursday 24th June, Door time: 7.00pm, Show time: TBC
LAKE DISTRICT! One of Bella Union’s most successful and celebrated acts – MIDLAKE – made their long-awaited return in February 2010 with “THE COURAGE OF OTHERS”, their extraordinary third album. artist: kylie minogue single: All the Lovers release date:28th June
A band that have only released 2 albums thus far and only really had 2 hit singles, the main one being ‘Don’t Upset The Rhythm’ which got to No.2 in the UK Top 40 last year. I always imagine that they’ve had more success than they have, but maybe that’s because I believe that they should be so much bigger than they are. They travel really well though and across Europe, Africa, South America they are much bigger than they are over here. I think it’s the add campaigns that probably help quite a bit!! In Fall/Winter 2009 the Noisettes’ song ‘Don’t Give Up’ was used on the “Bait” ad campaign by Timberland (footwear) for their “Mountain Athletic Series 2009” line-up in US, UK and Italy. In February 2010, the Noisettes’ track ‘Never Forget You’ was the jingle for the TV commercials and all-media marketing campaign by Vodafone in Italy. The ads featured football champion Francesco Totti. Now we have a new add to celebrate Dr. Marten’s 50th Anniversary this year and the Noisettes did a cover of Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone). Now we see that song being released. Its obviously the Buzzcocks cover. Its always been a corker of a tune. So covering such a classic can leave you teetering on dodgy territory. Is this release a big mistake? The answer is a massive NO! This is how to do a good cover. They’ve made it sound new and fresh. It starts in a stripped down laid back way, with a hint of Georgio Moroder/Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ then the chorus is very recognisable and is delivered in a fairly standard way. This is a good thing because it keeps hold of the spirit of the original, it doesn’t completely b*st*rdise it. Then a genius moment when a completely original little vocal riff comes in that gives the song an extra hook. This is a fabulous cover by a brilliant band. You should definitely check them out, the black singer Shingai Shoniwa is, I think, THE best female frontwoman on the planet. This cover could really be the song that finally gets them huge recognition in this country. I hope so.
Her first single release from her new album called ‘Aphrodite’. I do love Kylie; she’s been and still is the perfect pop star. ‘Cant Get You Outta My Head’ is without doubt one of only two or three songs that I deem as perfection. Although that in itself causes problems, because how do you keep up to that extremely high standard. She’s been managing it up until fairly recently I think. But with this album opener she’s struggling. It’s a bit too predictable. The structure of the song is so standard that I knew what was about to happen ten seconds before it did. Her direction is getting a bit lost; this could easily be a single for her little sister Danni. Its losing that Kylie brand and she’s starting to sound dated. She really needs someone new to come along and do something completely different now, to re-invent herself, just like she’s done in the past. The video features hundreds of people getting down to their underwear and carrying Kylie around the streets of New York (I think its NY). It’s quite funny in the fact that it’s possibly the most airbrushed video I’ve ever seen; even a white horse appears to have been given the treatment?? This will appeal to her huge gay following but I think she could start to lose the general public a tad.
lie, then this is definitely the gig for you. The lo-fi rock quintet was formed in Denton, TX, in 2000 by a group of musicians who had attended the North Texas School of Music together: Paul Alexander (bass, keyboards), Eric Nichelson (keyboards, guitar), Eric Pulido (guitar, keyboards, background vocals), Tim Smith (vocals, keyboards, guitar), and Mckenzie Smith (drums). They issued their own EP, Milkmaid Grand Army, in 2001, and sold 1,000 copies at their Texas gigs. They attracted the attention of Simon Raymonde, who signed them to his Bella Union label in the U.K., leading to European concerts and the recording of their first full-length album, Bamnan and Slivercork, which was released in July 2004. For their
next album, the band changed gears and moved away from the psychedelic leanings of their debut toward a more ‘70s-influenced sound. 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther featured the same line-up and a sound reminiscent of harmony-rich soft rock bands like America and Laurel Canyon, and troubadours like Neil Young and Gene Clark. The band stopped touring the following year to begin work on a new album. The resulting “Courage of Others” arrived in February 2010. SUMMERSLAM WITH SUMMERLIN Say hello to snowballing faster than The Atari’s Chris Roe, SUMMERLIN; a group that's on a mission to put the party back into pop rock. The Doncaster/Leeds based 5 piece set out to carve their own niche with a unique blend of lighthearted power- pop. With their debut E.P, So Make Your Move out in July, the group aims to give the musical masses something to smile about. Summerlin’s Drew Lawson (vocals), Ben Jackson (guitar, vocals), Jake Greenwood (bass), Lee Whitaker (guitar) and Liam Broad (drums) met while their current bands were falling apart and were immediately bonded by their shared love of pop music and party. They began playing music together and in turn created Summerlin in Late 2008. Drawing on a wide range of influences, the group crafted an upbeat poprock sound, "We wanted to write love songs you could party too" With their fan base growing rapidly, attention on the band began to swirl after playing sold out shows across the UK with the likes of
Twenty Twenty, My PassionQuitedrive, Set Your Goals, Sherwood and Army of Freshman. 2010 seems to be the year for Summerlin. First they became one of the top 20 played unsigned acts on Myspace, followed by being asked to appear on BBC Radio One Annie&Nick Switch show where they were interviewed, recorded a jingle and they were tipped as one of the bands to look out for by Edith Bowman. With The release of their debut E.P an first UK headline tour July the buzz for this band is
they ever imagined. Checkout Summerlin on www.myspace.com/ summerlin with links to facebook&twitter

The foundation for Smithywood Club’s current viability and continued existence owes much to the prudence of the committees of the past.
During the late 1980s in particular we enjoyed a big upsurge in the club’s popularity and for several years we earned very good profits. I managed to put away a large proportion of the surplus with one eye on future times. This was just as well, for the 1990s saw Clubland suffer another downturn in popularity which has carried through to this day and has resulted in hundreds of club closures. There are many reasons given for this including supermarkets, television and the rising fees of artists, some of whom are perhaps deluded by the astronomical figures being talked about as a result of X Factor and the like. I personally believe that clubs which don’t recognise the need to change will struggle to survive. Smaller is better - a small club is easier to heat and light, the rates are less etc. I would also advise clubs to remember their original heritage, and make more effort to get more involved in the local community, in order to attract the grass roots members that are crucial to a good club’s health and survival. Let us remember that the local club has much to offer, especially in these austere times. Where else can you enjoy a great night out in decent facilities, watching top class entertainment with drink at reasonable prices, for a tenner a head or less? We must be positive and forward thinking, and promote our strengths as an institution. Our management is working hard to put the club into a more stable situation and on a brighter note, the club has no reason to be worried about its immediate future. The club has assets which far outweigh its commitments and along with the management I will work continuously to keep it this way. I don’t think I will be the one to write the 100 years celebration but I will try my utmost to make sure someone does! Kind Regards B Davy Club Secretary

A QUESTION FOR CLUB GOERS CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker
Are you a member of a club – and if so, do you get to have a say in how your club is run? I ask this following last week’s
SHOWTIME OF OLD CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker
Time for a bit of nostalgia this week – I wonder how many readers remember the resident backing musicians who graced clubs the length and breadth of the country, playing behind some of the biggest acts in show business? Most of you will have been brought up on a diet of singers with electronic backing tracks, and will be wondering what on earth I’m talking about. However veteran performers will remember carrying around their “dots” – sheet music of their sets which were handed over to the organist
FAMILY FUNDAY IN ECKINGTON
debate about committee men, and some of the feedback I have received. I often get asked by Committee members to recommend acts. I have to say I am uncomfortable about doing so – it is not my place to make a decision on which acts perform where, and there is always the danger that an act I like personally may not suit the venue in question. However I will always recommend
new acts to agents if I think they are worth a go, but even so it is ultimately their decision whether or not to take the act on board. Finally I would urge any act who would like a feature to get in touch. I’ve looked at agents and venues, and would like to run a monthly feature on local Clubland heroes!
and drummer on arrival at the gig. I remember my first such gig at East Dene club – Mr Jeff Shaw was a gentleman and excellent musician, and together with drummer Bernard they provided the platform for entertainment for many many years. Shortly afterwards I had the pleasure of working with Dawn and Nigel at Albion Road, and then went on a series of ten day runs all over the country, working with a variety of musicians. Not all were perfect – I remember playing in one club in Sheffield and neither me nor the audience recognised the organist’s version of my first two numbers! Memorably another club in Hull had an accordion player instead of an organist – which left gaps in the music whenever he had to
turn the pages. Why have I chosen to raise this subject? Last Monday I worked at the Arundel in Sheffield, and was delighted to see Syd Longdon at the organ. Although he doesn’t do backing these days, he still plays four days a week and brings back great memories of the good days. Also I was booked for a solo spot in Club Tropicana at Chapel St Leonards. Having dusted down my dots, I was amazed to see Chris and John on stage waiting for me. Chris has been playing keyboards for over seventeen years and is still a great partner on stage. It was the first time in sixteen years that I had performed like this, and it was great fun! So here’s to the next time and even hopefully the sign of things to come!

NO HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR PUB GOERS AFTER VAT INCREASE
If you’re free on June 26th, we would like to recommend you take a trip to the Family Fun Day being held at the Rose and Crown in Eckington, to help Rebecca Hinchcliff and Sarah Brentnall raise money for Meningitis UK. Rachel sadly lost her son Jaden to this disease in 2007, and the event is being held on what would have been his third birthday.
• Balloon release, prizes for the first balloon back and the one that’s travelled the furthest. • Penalty shoot out • Raffle • Guess the Teddy’s name • Tom bola • Hook a duck • Face painting • Cake stall • Free bouncy castle • BBQ • Live music - Junk Yard Dog
Since then, the two of them have raised money for the new Children’s Hospital’s intensive care ambulance, Bear 2, and have put
The event starts at 12 noon, and all proceeds will be donated to Meningitis UK in memory of Jaden.
Come on England!
- VAT increase means combined VAT and duty rates on a pint in the pub to hit £1 in New Year - VAT increase means up to 10p increase on a pint CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today predicted that the impact of a VAT hike to 20% in January 2011 will force the rate of pub closure to increase above the current devastating rate of 39 a week. Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive, said: ‘In the New Year, many pub goers will be hit with a VAT increase that will push up the combined taxation on a pint of beer to over a pound! This historically sad moment for the nation’s 15 million pub goers is compounded by the knowledge that this increase will cause yet more well-run community pubs to shut their doors unless the Government acts. Relentless tax increases on the nation’s pubs are contributing to pub closures, job losses and a decline in community spirit. ‘The announcement of a review into alcohol pricing and taxation this Autumn gives the Government an opportunity to avoid the harm that this VAT increase will impose on pubs. CAMRA will be pressing for targeted measures to support well-run community pubs. These measures could include a new class of business rate relief for community pubs and a compensatory reduction in beer duty.’
FREEDOM 2 CHOOSE Has anyone noticed just how many local provincial papers are starting to print rather long articles about smoking cessation successes? The internet is full of them just lately and I cite today’s abomination from Norfolk where it is claimed that 6,400 people ‘quit smoking’ between April 2009/ March 2010! 6,400 sounds very impressive..... and it would be if it were true! But, you see, these figures are based on a 4 week cycle only, therefore if a smoker starts again after this 4 week observation period they are still counted as a success – which totally distorts the true picture! However, this is what the government want as they need to show the world that the good people of this country are bending to their will and in so doing are totally distorting the figures. The Department of Health released figures not long ago that showed NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) had a 98.4% FAILURE rate so how on earth can ‘they’ expect anyone of sane mind to accept that 6,400 (Norfolk) 5,378 (Warwickshire, Sussex, Cumbria) etc managed to quit smoking using NRT? We now know, as I have explained to Mercury readers previously, that the smokeban was brought in on the back of lies, fabrications, manipulated statistics & junk science and we now know that the figures that supposedly support the successful quit rate are also fabricated for if you added up all the supposed quitters nationwide since July, 2007, there would hardly be any smokers left! Meanwhile, amid this flurry of media activity with ‘cessation figures’, pubs & clubs are still closing at an alarming rate. Seven (yes 7) Working Men’s Clubs closed their doors forever last month. That is seven little communities lost forever. Seven social outlets for elderly people - never to go to again. Seven more locations where individual isolation will be rampant. It is a disgrace that this country has lowered itself to bow to the health lobby to the detriment of its people. We are still averaging 35 pubs per week closing; ok, it’s less than the record 52 per week last winter but it is still a hell of a lot of pubs! 35 pubs closed means at least another 100 people claiming benefits of one sort or another, quite possible a lot more than 100! The World Cup has been heralded as a £100m boost to the pub trade but if, or when, England get knocked out (I sincerely hope they win it by the way) are people going to traipse down to their local to watch the likes of USA v Mexico? I don’t think so do you? It has come to some sort of sad state when a World Cup has to come to the rescue of our flailing pub industry. And this will go on and on and on until something is done to bring smokers back into pubs/clubs. Separate rooms is the simplest answer as non smokers then have no gripe with smokers, but landlords/ landladies nationwide will rejoice to the sound of ringing tills. To make this happen we need YOUR support-don’t just sit there awaiting the hangman’s noose!

OBITUARY ANDY KING - RIP It is with deep sadness that I have to report the passing of former Big Business frontman Andy King at the, all too early, age of 48. His funeral will take place at City Road on Friday 2nd July at 11:15am. Andy was born to perform and his infectious personality and humour touched everyone that knew him. Originally he started to learn violin at school however it was as a guitarist and vocalist that he made his reputation as a performer. He started playing guitar with his first band, ‘Piccadilly’ however he soon became better known with the rock band ‘Alibi’ before moving on to his first name band John O’Hara and the Playboys. The benefit of working regularly with John and the experience and ‘stagecraft’ he gained encouraged him to to strike out on his own and he left ‘The Playboys’ to become a solo performer and he soon became popular. He moved back to working with a band when he was to join the popular and excellent ‘Nassa’. In 2001 the ‘Nassa’ show incorporated brass and grew into the ‘Big Business’ show with a big PA rig and huge light show and Andy was in his element. Over 8 years I took to the stage every week knowing that the audience would be shouting for more having seen a great show. He was the funniest and nicest of men, always good company and I could guarantee that he would lift our spirits by his antics. Although he showed confidence on stage, and to the public, those of us that knew Andy well also knew there was a caring, sensitive emotional side to him. An earlier lost relationship and the loss of his Mum, who he loved and adored, and the more recent loss of his sister led to a lifestyle that eventually took a tole on his health. Andy stopped performing with the band. His recent health problems and passing are very sad indeed however Andy has provided us with great memories, endless smiles, great company, great perfomances and a life well lived. His legacy cannot be measured in wealth but he leaves us with something far more precious insomuch as we were fortunate indeed to have known him. He will be well remembered.
CELEBRATE GREEN DAY MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
Here’s an interesting idea, this was held at Alton Towers over the weekend. The theme park gave free rides to anyone who could produce evidence to show they were also called Robert Green, in honour of our dropped England goalkeeper. It was no doubt to make up for the amount of stick you would have received all last week, although it’s ironic. Green Day for me is every day I visit Alton Towers after taking one look at those scary rides! Talking of scary… No, that’s not a replica of my face in the bathroom mirror in a morning, but in fact the character ‘Balok’ who appeared on the end credits of Star Trek. At a Hollywood auction recently, this fetched an amazing £48,000. Since it used to have me hiding behind the sofa, not during but just at the end of the programme, I asked on the air which characters frightened you as a child? Pete in Rotherham remembers being horrified by a picture of the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk, used to advertise the panto one year at Sheffield’s Lyceum. We also had nominations for Christopher Lee as Dracula, the Wicked Witches from Snow White, the Wizard of Oz and oddly from Lyn at Parkhill, Sheffield with Mr Magoo. Apparently threatening to send him round did help send her daughter to sleep though. Staying on the theme of childhood, listen each morning this week for chances to win a laptop computer if you can piece together the names of the fairytales two mystery segments of story have come from. Plus it’s also Billy Ocean week too with copies of his “Very Best of” CD right now. Talk to you back on air every weekday morning 6 to 10am.

holidays in the world's most westernised Arabic country
Tunisia is a destination dedicated to tourism, with 80% of its workforce employed in the industry, sunshine all year round and reliable North African temperatures. A French protectorate from 1881 to 1956, Tunisia is considered a voice of moderation amongst Muslim nations. That its dialect mixes Arabic, French and even Italian within the space of one sentence reminds visitors that this is an outward-looking country. Tunisians are mainly friendly and many speak reasonable English. Air travel from London Heathrow to Tunis-Carthage International Airport should take about two and a half hours. Tunisair and other companies fly from several UK airports to airports near coastal resorts. Good public transport connections exist between various cities and towns. Although historical landmarks – e.g., C6th BC ruins at Carthage - are dotted around, the main draw for tourists is its 800 miles of clean, sandy beaches. Popular resorts include Hammamet and Yasmine Hammamet – both less than 60 – 90 minutes from airports in Tunis and Monastir – as well as Tabarka (in the north), Djerba and Port El Kantaoul. These resorts are well served with five, four and three star hotels. Port El Kantoul was Tunisia's first purposebuilt resort and opened in 1979. Whilst one can locate decent B&B from as little as £10 a night, folk on a budget can easily find affordable deals giving access to more up-market accommodation. The Magic Life Hotel in Yasmine Hammamet is particularly suited to sports activities, families with children and evening entertainment. The Movenpick Hotel (pictured), in the city of Sousse, is more formal but still boasts access to great facilities and a gorgeous beach. Both hotels recently won awards from Thomson Holidays and discounted package deals are available. Medinas – street markets – exist in many places and the example in Sousse (pictured) goes back many centuries. Sousse is one of Tunisia's older cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers good beaches and a clear turquoise sea. Although rarely aggressive, medina street traders do persist in calling passers-by into their shops. This can become irksome, so perhaps avoid chat unless looking to purchase. Traditional leather and craft items are plentiful and haggling is ok. However, negotiating prices on imported goods – even fake Diesel bags from China! – won't succeed. Local currency is the Dinar. A closed currency (until April 2011), it must be exchanged within Tunisia; easily done at hotels and other outlets. One Dinar equals approximately 50p. Remember to keep conversion receipts if looking to change back! Food comes mainly from the sea - sardines, squid, shellfish and fruit-de-mer providing a staple diet. Beef and lamb are also popular in this land where vegetarians must convey their wishes carefully. Many restaurants serve an extra “free” pre-starter course. Most common is Marissa; a spicy pepper paste served alongside olive oil, olives, tuna chunks, local vegetables and varieties of bread. Don't eat too much though as portions in ensuing courses can be generous. Restaurants should display fork symbols indicating their price ranges. One fork denotes cheap and three forks signals five-star tariffs. One can also dine well for as little as £1.50 in street outlets. Local beer and wine is both cheap and pleasant but imported drinks are expensive. Check out Boukha (fig brandy that goes well with cola or orange) and Thibarinen (a date-based digestive liqueur guaranteed to round off any meal either alone or mixed with a final small cup of strong coffee). Mint tea provides a popular refreshment at any time of the day. Shisha pipes are smoked by natives and tourists alike. The only drug will be tobacco, mixed with apple and other fruit flavourings. A shisha can make its smoker “high” but this is mainly down to excess oxygen absorption when inhaling. Tunisia offers great opportunities to tan, swim in the Med or hotel pool, eat great food and sample lovely local soft and alcoholic drinks. Golf courses abound and there are also night clubs pumping out western dance music and occasionally featuring top live local musicians. In Association with
The fantastic ‘Nitro baits’ sponsored competition for anglers under 16 years old has started to take shape with the first entries received. As you know if you read ‘Angler’s Corner’ regularly, ‘Nitro Baits’ tackle shop is situated in Parson Cross, Sheffield and owner Mark Oakes has generously agreed to support the column by offering a bait prize consisting of superb ‘nitro baits’ products!! We both considered the best way to promote local angling and bring youngsters into the sport would be to offer a prize for the best catch picture; not necessarily a big fish, but a picture which captures the fun or relaxation of fishing. To kick us off, I’ve got a stunning fish, surely close to a British record, but sadly not weighed! Youngster Reece Cooper was fishing with proud Dad Darren at a local water when he hooked into this MONSTER gudgeon! I’ve never seen one as big in all my years fishing and it’s a lovely result. Reece caught it on a big bait too, a single grain of corn tipped with a red maggot was snapped up by this month’s prize winning fish, so well done Reece. I’ll have a word with Mark to make he knows where to send the prize. Nitro baits are guaranteed to catch you some more great fish, so let us know how you do. More good news for readers of ‘Angler’s Corner’. Bennetts of Sheffield have the top of the range Waterline 3 drawer seatbox available exclusively to Mercury readers for the unbeatable price of £99.99! With an rrp of £199.99,that’s less than half price! If you contact them on 01142760123 and quote WL020M, they will even send it carriage free. Check out more great bargains at www.bosfish. co.uk or pop into the shop on Stanley Street and see what you can save. Keep an eye on this column to see if there are
any more stunning offers for readers of ‘Angler’s Corner’. The catch reports keep trickling into and this week I’d like to congratulate Brian Oakes on his first ever double figure carp. 53 year old Brian took it from prolific Drayton Fishery and it hit the bank at 13lb 3ozs and was taken on ‘Nitro baits’ own method mix (told you it worked!). Brian only took up angling last year so its nice to see the hard work pay off. I got the chance to go fishing this week instead of writing about it. With the glorious 16th upon us, I took a trip to my local club water in search of carp. It’s a 3 acre highly pressured venue with a couple of ‘hot’ pegs and I managed to get onto the favoured peg after moving across the lake. A short day session produced 6 pristine carp ranging from 12lbs up to a smasher at 19lbs 12ozs to finish off. All fish taken on ACE rig bits and crab/oyster boilies presented tight to features. A day of stunning sunshine made it a lovely visit! Don’t forget to let me know what you are catching, tight lines, Clint.

STARTER’S ORDERS HORSE RACING by Timelord
Irish Derby weekend After Royal Ascot we are back to fairly mundane fare as far as British racing is concerned this weekend. However, over the Irish Sea there is a really good meeting at the Curragh where they run their Derby on Sunday and the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes on Saturday. In addition they have the 10 furlong Ballymacoll International Stakes (Group 3) and the At The Races Curragh Cup (Group 3) on Saturday. On Sunday the Derby is supported by the Group 2 ladbrokes.com Railway Stakes over 6 furlongs and the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Sapphire Stakes over 5 furlongs. On this side of the water we have the 6 furlong Group Three Chipchase Stakes and John Smiths Northumberland Plate Heritage Handicap (over 2 miles) at Newcastle and the Group 3 Sunley Criterion Stakes at Newmarket. There are also a couple of Listed races at Newmarket and one at Windsor. I shall concentrate on these races for my column this week. Newmarket Saturday 2.20 Michael Bell’s Sweetie Time now looks to have got the hang of racing; 2.50 I think that Laaheb has an excellent chance here although Bouguereau will be dangerous if fit enough to do himself justice after his long lay-off; 3.25 Jeremy Noseda’s triple Group 2 winning Arabian Gleam gets the vote, albeit narrowly from Yaa Wayl, Doncaster Rover and Jeninsky. Red Jazz, Himalya and St Moritz all ran well at Royal Ascot and could be troublesome if turning up here. Newcastle Saturday 2.05 I have this between Barney Mc Grew and Knot in Wood with a very marginal preference for the former at the likely odds; 3.20 The two I like here are Donald Mc Cain’s Overturn and Jim Goldie’s La Vecchia Scuola. It is close between them but I am going for La Vecchia Scuola. Windsor Saturday 3.00 In the Midsummer Plate sponsored by Totesport.com I am going to go for Michael Bell’s Moyenne Corniche, though Richard Hannon’s dual course and distance winner, Ordnance Row, will ensure that it isn’t a cakewalk. Curragh Saturday 1.45 Aidan O’Brien’s Viscount Nelson is the selection as I think that the form of his French Derby fifth behind Lope de Vega is superior to anything else on offer here. Precious Gem and Choose Me head the dangers. N.B. Lope De Vega is my long range Arc De Triomphe selection. I think that this horse could prove to be something special and should be followed until beaten. 2.20 Godophin’s Flying Cloud should prove capable enough to win here but Sariska will prove a tough nut to crack; 4.00 Alan Swinbank’s Merchant of Dubai is the choice. Michael Jarvis’s Opinion Poll and Dermot Weld’s Profound Beauty look to be the main dangers.
4.20 I am sticking with the French Derby form over the English version’s form and going for Cape Blanco to upset Workforce. I think that our Derby may prove to be somewhat unreliable and since then At First Sight has been well and truly beaten by Monterosso in a Group 2 race at the Royal meeting. Not only will Aidan O’Brien have a clear line on the winner’s Derby form through At First Sight he also has the beating of him in the Dante with Cape Blanco, albeit that there were legitimate excuses for Workforce’s poor showing there. Don’t forget that Cape Blanco himself was unbeaten until running in the French Derby. This race should give a clear collateral form line between the merits of the respective Derbys and is well worth watching. If I am right and Lope De Vega’s form is franked handsomely then he could be a good thing for the Arc even though it is still a long way off. Royal Ascot results for my selections: Tuesday: 2.30 Goldikova - won (11/8 Fav.) ( Pipedreamer last); 3.05 Markab - 2nd (14/1) (Borderlescott 3rd 16/1; Equiano won 9/2; Kingsgate Native 6th 5/2 Fav.); 3.50 Dick Turpin – 2nd (5/1) ( Makfi 7th 11/4 Jt. Steelers’ Fan Forum Called By Management The further two player signings, both billed as being new faces to the team, will be announced at the Steelers’ Fan Forum on Thursday June 24th, which takes place at Abbeydale Sports club, at 7:30pm. All Steelers fans are welcome to attend. The forum, called by management in the wake of Steelers’ associate company Yorkshire Sport Ltd going into liquidation, is to introduce new members of the management team and will bring together management, Fans’ Advisory Board, Supporters’ Club and Dronfield and Bassetlaw fan groups to answer questions from the fans. Last Tuesday saw all ten Elite League teams meet to schedule fixtures for the 2010-11 season. Originally scheduled over two days, the first day concluded with 99% of fixtures arranged.
SHEFFIELD EAGLES RUGBY LEAGUE by Jim Collins
ENGLAND TO PLAY CUMBRIA MEMORIAL GAME England Rugby League is to play a commemorative match against a Cumbria representative team to raise funds for the family of Garry Purdham. The 31-year-old former Whitehaven, Workington Town and Egremont player was one of 12 people killed by gunman Derrick Bird in Cumbria earlier this month, a tragedy which will have lifelong consequences for his wife Ros and their two young children, Flynn and Cameron. To help the Purdhams, England will play a select team of professional and community players from the county at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground on Sunday, 3 October. The match takes place the day after the Engage Super League Grand Final and will comprise members of the England squad who are preparing to fly out for New Zealand and Australia three days later to compete in the 2010 Four Nations. Although players involved in the Grand Final will not be available for selection, England coach Steve McNamara’s team will be the strongest line-up seen in Cumbria for generations. “All the Super League players knew of Garry from playing with or against his brother Rob, the Harlequins RL captain, and I’m sure they will want to put on a good show on October 3,” said McNamara. “As well as helping raise a lot of money for the family, the match will be a useful exercise in our preparations for the Four Nations.” “Hopefully as many people as possible will get behind this match: I can’t think of a more worthy cause.”

When do we play Wednesday?
WEEKLY FANS COLUMN by Jon Warburton As the first text messages began buzzing through to my phone at around 9.36am last Thursday, the excitement of the 2010/11 season fixture list announcement began to pronounce itself. All the usual questions immediately form in the brain: are we away from home on the opening day, Boxing Day and the final game of the season, as tends to be the case? Do we have any ridiculously treacherous midweek away trips to far flung destinations? And of course on which dates do we play our fiercest rivals? It actually took me a fleeting instant to realise that we wouldn’t be meeting our city rivals in the coming season after their failure to avoid relegation last season, so my attentions moved on to the other obvious dates of interest. As one rival has disappeared, another has reared its head as the “mighty” (as they are so affectionately known by all and sundry) Leeds United finally achieved promotion from League One. So we have a tasty trip to Elland Road early in the season (September 25) that will no doubt test our credentials as potential promotion challengers and go a long way to showing what sort of a proposition Leeds will pose in the coming season. As alluded to earlier, we are of course away from home on the first and last games of the season, with both ties taking place in Wales. It seems that fortune doesn’t favour the Blades where this is concerned. However there is the potential for a humdinger at home to Hull City on Boxing Day, by which point both clubs will hope to be up there challenging at least a play off spot. The final, and most irony soaked fixture to be thrown up is the very early return of Paddy Kenny to Bramall Lane, with QPR the visitors for our first home fixture. It is occurrences such as this that make you find it hard to believe the fixture list is really done at random. So all that stands between us and another season of goings on at BDTBL is heartache for the English national team and then three weeks of transfer speculation….enjoy!!!
Partnership inspires Owl’s Iceland trek LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk
A life-long Owls fan from Chesterfield is taking part in a 75 kilometre trek across Iceland this summer to raise funds for The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield. Steven Hall, aged 28, will start his six day challenge in Reykjavik on August 15 before moving to Landmannahellir then Alftavatn and finishing in Stakkhotlsgja on 21 August. An admin team co-ordinator from Inkersall, Steven has decided to take on the challenge after being inspired by the special partnership between The Children’s Hospital and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. He was also spurred on by positive comments from friends about the care their children have received at the hospital. The trek, which is run by Skyline Overseas, will involve steep climbs, interspersed with the striking scenery of streaming lava fields, icecaps, glaciers, waterfalls, bubbling hot springs and geysers. Day five will take Steven close to the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and volcano, which has been the cause of flight delays across the world due to its recent eruptions. The trek will go within a ten mile radius of the volcano but it will take Steven across much lower ground. Steven said: “I’ve done the British Heart Foundation 17 mile high peak challenge three times now and wanted something a bit more challenging to take on. “Being a Sheffield Wednesday supporter, the link between the hospital and the Owls has raised my awareness of the charity and the amazing work that it does. I also have lots of friends whose children have benefited from having this fantastic hospital so close by.” As part of his training Steven has

been taking part in long walks along the Trans Pennine Way and has recently completed the 34 mile round Chesterfield walk. Cheryl Ridge, a fundraiser at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “It’s great to see the Sheffield Wednesday fans getting behind the work of the hospital and supporting their club in raising money for our young patients. “It’s a tough challenge that Steven has taken on and on behalf of everyone at the hospital and the charity I’d like to thank him for his support and wish him the best of luck!” Steven is hoping to raise more

they were greeted by supporters of John including Captain Blade from Sheffield United. Johns’ challenge finished this Wednesday which is a very important day for him. “16th June was my wife’s birthday so it was important for me to finish my challenge then. Since my daughter and wife passed away I have devoted my life to fundraising for charity and my ambition is to raise £250,000 in my life time.” John, who is 71, has spent the last 27 years walking for charity and has raised an astonishing £130,000 doing so. Fundraising Manager for Macmillan in Sheffield Rebecca
Staden said “Once again John has proved that anything is possible, his dedication is truly inspirational and to complete this epic challenge is amazing. Since May 2007 John has raised a fantastic £16,279.25, this amount of money would fund a Macmillan family support worker for five months! Oh behalf of Macmillan I would like to thank John for all his continued support, every pound he raises makes a huge difference to local people affected by cancer.”
script was written. Collectively England were awful, the Irish scored an equaliser through Kevin Sheedy and the match, one that the Irish could have won, finished in a draw. England’s next opponents, Holland, had fared no better! They had only managed a 1-1 draw with Egypt, leaving the group on a knife edge. However, the dullest of games was played out to a 0-0 stalemate. The only notable occurrence in the match saw an injury to the England talisman and captain Bryan Robson, who had been playing as badly, if not worse, than the rest of the team, putting him out of contention for the rest of the tournament. Meanwhile the Irish and the Egyptians played out a game with the same result. Therefore only a win in England’s third group game, against the Egyptians, could guarantee a place in the knockout stages. England’s confidence needed a good performance, but the reality was that a scruffy second half set piece goal from defender, Mark Wright, who was only in the team following an injury to first choice centre half Terry Butcher, clinched the game. Ireland played out a 0-0 draw with the Dutch leaving these two teams on the same points, with the same goal difference, the same number of goals scored and an equal result against each other, in joint second place. The luck of the Irish came through and 1988 European Champions Holland were out of the competition after drawing lots. Spain beware! In the next round England scraped through against Belgium with a goal from substitute David Platt in the last minute of extra time, after the first 90 minutes had been played out to 0-0 stalemate, despite Belgium hitting the woodwork twice. The next round was supposed to be another formality, as the opponents were only some unknown African team with a striker who was older than most of the host nation’s venerated historical artefacts. Again England scored an early goal from Platt, who was only in the side because of injuries to other players, midway through the first half to settle their nerves. The no hopers from Africa brought on Miller to play as a second half substitute. A rejuvenated performance inspired by the so called fossil saw Cameroon outplay England and they not only equalised, but scored again to lead 2-1. Two dubious penalties, converted by Lineker, one in extra time, saved the day for England
after another poor performance, but they were through to that semi final with all it’s memories. In the 1980’s and 90’s, when the top teams in English football all played with a 4-4-2 system, English national team managers such as Hoddle were criticised for playing alien 4-5-1 and 3-5-2 formations. In modern day Premier League football most players play 4-5-1 week in week out through the season at club level. So now we have an International manager who insists on playing a 4-4-2 formation! This without a recognised left winger, but with two central midfield players who are individually brilliant but have shown over the years that they cannot play in the same team successfully, and two strikers, one of whom cant score goals at any level and can’t even get into his club side, and the other a so called superstar whose best moment in the World Cup finals so far was his post match petulance. Will it be injury, suspension or player revolt that brings Mr Capello to his senses? Will he have the courage to bring in pace on the wings in the form of Joe Cole on the left with either Shaun Wright-Phillips or Lennon on the right, push Barry back to protect a slow central defensive pairing and have Stevie Gerrard and Frank Lampard getting forward through the middle to support a striker. For my money that would be Peter Crouch, who although he isn’t a touch player and he is relatively poor in the air for such a tall player, at least he scores goals when given the chance at club and international level. As for Mr Rooney I would leave him to sulk on the bench and would only use him as an impact player, and even then possibly putting him behind Jermaine Defoe in that particular queue. So will history repeat itself? Will England get through their group stage and go on to cover themselves in glory? Will their players, even the ones that miss penalties, go on to be loved, particularly if they can shed a few tears on the way, and be admired by the nation? Or will they be on the next plane home, their heads hung in shame and with a manager wondering how much his compensation will be when he either resigns or gets the sack? By the time you are reading this article hopefully only the latter of these questions will have been definitively answered.

John, who was been walking the Sheffield Half Marathon route six days a week since March 1st has so far raised a fantastic £6,396.47 for the charity over the past three months. “Macmillan does a wonderful job, not just by providing medical support to people affected by cancer but by also providing emotional and financial help, and every 10p I collect for them is 10p Macmillan didn’t have before.” Said John. On his 100th half marathon John was joined by Steve Loane, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan, Kevan Smith from Nabarro and Richard Caborn MP, who all got into the spirit of things by dressing as John and all pushing prams to the finish line where
WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?
WORLD CUP by Neil Cardwell The less said about England’s dismal performance against Algeria the better. The national team looked like a group of below par individuals playing together in the same team for the first time. Whilst other teams, most notably the French, Spanish, Italian and Germans, have struggled against supposedly inferior opposition in this World Cup, at least they have all looked like they could pass the ball and threaten the opposing team’s goal from time to time. Sadly this was not the case for England against Algeria. Indeed, had Algeria shown a little more confidence in their own play, they could have won the game. As it is, England still have a chance of beating Slovenia to progress into the knockout stages of the competition, and could even top their group. But has this happened before? What do we remember about the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy? The late Sir Bobby Robson, revered and respected as the most successful England manager since Sir Alf Ramsey? England only missing out on a place in the final because Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce could not score from the penalty spot? The earlier rounds of the competition fade into insignificance in the memory. England went into the 1990 World Cup finals with high expectations. Pre tournament, England were expected to do well. In the group stages they had drawn the Dutch, the Irish and the Egyptians, so therefore the only question to remain unanswered was, would it be the Dutch or the English that were to top the group? England had one of the world’s best midfield players in Manchester United’s Bryan Robson in their ranks, together with a renowned goal scorer in Gary Lineker , who had won the Golden Boot award in the previous World Cup in 1996, and flair players like Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle and John Barnes. Obviously the Irish, England’s first opponents, would meekly roll over and the rest of the group stage would be a formality, particularly after Lineker had scored a goal very early in the game. The trouble was nobody had told the Irish players how the
