CHANCE TO CELEBRATE TWO YEARS TO GO TO GAMES Sheffielders can look forward to a host of activities, events and challenges coming their way next month to celebrate two years to go to the London 2012 Games. Details of what’s on in Sheffield to celebrate the Open Weekend 2010, (23 – 25 July), are out now. And they are all completely free. If you like swimming you could take part in a challenge to swim 2,012 metres. You can do it in any of the city’s swimming pools either in all one go or gradually through the week of July 17 – 25. Or why not check out a gig by local musicians? The Concord Youth Music and Performance Organisation will take
part in a simultaneous mass play of 2,012 musicians all across the UK. You can see them at 11.30am on the Moor on July 24. If art’s more your thing, why not go to Art in the Park on Sunday July 25? The event is a chance to create street art with professional artists inspired by the landscape of Middlewood Park. There’s more to see and do, including five-a-side football, exercise classes, organised walks and free health checks. And there is also the Council’s organised programme of summer play activities for children and young people called Go For It. Cllr Roger Davison, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport
and Tourism, at Sheffield City Council, said:”There will be wide range of different sporting, cultural and arts activities people can enjoy here in Sheffield, and more events are being added all the time. The Open Weekend is a great opportunity to share in the excitement of the Games and to celebrate the two year countdown by challenging yourself to do something new or take an interest to a new level. Have a look at what’s on and join in the big celebration looking forward to the world’s biggest and most prestigious sporting event.” With the support of BP, Premier Partner of the Cultural Olympiad and
long-standing supporter of arts and culture in the UK, the Open Weekend takes place every year until the start of the London 2012 Games on July 27 2010. The Open Weekend is now in its third year.
The previous two Open Weekends have enabled over a million people to take part in sport, arts and cultural events across the length and breadth of the UK. For more information about Sheffield’s Open
Weekend 2012 events go to www.lightingtheflame.co.uk or www. eventsheffield.co.uk. To find out what’s happening across the country see www. london2012.com/ openweekend

Radio Nightingale exists to provide entertainment and comfort to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. So we take great care to build our programme schedule to ensure that it offers the best possible entertainment at the times when the patients need it most. With this in mind a change to our programme schedule has been in the planning stages for some time but the first sod was cut this week as we started the development work to achieve phase one which should be completed by the end of the summer. I’ll tell you more about this as the change gets nearer. We said a fond farewell to Adam Bennett this week. We came into contact with Adam through his university dissertation on hospital radio about a year ago and he’s been a regular contributor to programmes with his whats on guide ever since. But other commitments mean that he can no longer offer the time to produce the weekly information feature. For the time-being our Tuesday whats on guide broadcaster, John, is taking up the Wednesday edition but a vacant position exists for a new volunteer. We are looking for someone who can offer a weekly commitment to research and broadcast a feature packed full of information about local events. Our fundraising this week was boosted by the beautiful weather which brought people out in numbers to the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley. Thank you to those who contributed and helped to raise £158.62. There was an additional boost to funds this week with a generous donation from The Charles & Elsie Sykes Trust to purchase some new equipment. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk Current volunteer vacancies: • Whats on Guide broadcaster (Wednesdays) • Saturday sports show presenter • Football commentator • Request collector (Tuesday or Wednesday morning) • Fundraiser • Voice over artist / creator Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

COPLEYʼS COLUMN What a fiasco this World Cup has become with terrible refereeing decisions, notably the disallowed goal of Frank Lampard’s, which clearly crossed the goal line and the allowed goal ‘scored’ by Carlos Tevez, which was clearly offside. To make matters worse, the latter was replayed on the pitch big screen, leaving the officials in no doubt that they had made a mistake, yet according to the rules, the goal had to stand. England were an absolute disgrace, and the faithful travelling fans were given a glimmer of hope against Slovenia with a goal from Jermaine Defoe, surely the best thing to happen in the Defoe family since their Daniel wrote Robinson Crusoe. However, it was all to no avail, as a lacklustre performance was punished by a young German side, thrashing England by four goals to one. Never have I seen such an inept performance by a football team, and I felt gutted for the travelling England fans that have spent fortunes following the national team. What is the answer, surely not sacking Fabio Capello. The blame is laid at the useless team of non triers, all millionaires, some of whom showed no pride in playing for their country by not sticking their chests out and singing the national anthem. As I have mentioned previously in this column, the main culprit is Wayne Rooney, who has been abysmal throughout the competition. I take no pride in the fact that I was the only journalist that stated quite clearly from the off that England would not win the World Cup. Let’s hope that lessons have been learnt. I thought that the emergency budget
from the new coalition government was brilliant and extremely fair. The increase in v.a.t. makes sure that each and every one of us does our bit to get us out of the mess that we have inherited from the last government. Harriet Harmon made me sick in the House of Commons, particularly when Nick Clegg was the chief whipping boy. Not once was there an admission that it was her party that had got us in this terrible mess, let alone an apology. The main good thing to emerge is the clampdown on benefit fraudsters, with people claiming bad backs and my favourite, the phantom epileptics having to attend a stringent medical. A simple brain scan will expose the latter, and after a term of imprisonment, they should be made to repay all the money.. I intend to write to the appropriate government department with my views on the matter. Just when I thought that last weekend could not be bettered, this one has been even better. I was honoured to be the guest of Sheffield Eagles at a fundraising luncheon at Baldwin’s Omega on Friday. It was a pleasure to meet Mark Aston,( Mr. Sheffield Eagles) whose passion for this club is to be admired. Seated next to me on the top table was Jimmy Bright, an excellent comedian from Manchester, who apart from saying he would buy me a new suit if he won the lottery, (three numbers should do it) made me laugh. In view of the fact that my suit probably cost more than his total wardrobe, it was probably his best gag of the day. By coincidence, Jimmy was star turn at Hillsborough, home of Sheffield Wednesday, later on in the day,

where an evening with legendary England footballer, Paul Merson was taking place. I was fortunate to receive three v.i.p. complimentary tickets for the show, and duly took my close pal Andy Butcher and his father. We were all delighted to spend over an hour with Paul Merson before the start of the show, and I am indebted to the organisers for their generosity, as the tickets would have cost one hundred and five pounds. The evening was a resounding success, well run, and I was pleased to call out the stand up bingo. The only blot on the weekend was the football, as I got four numbers on the National Lottery on Sunday night. The premature death of Andy King was extremely sad, and I must admit that it frightens me as I reach the final chapters in my life. I am presently making some plans for my own funeral, preparing a c.d. for the big day. Song selection is not easy, but my final song is definitely going to be ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by the Platters. I would like to devote the final paragraph of this report to my many friends in showbusiness, taken long before their time. I am honoured to keep the memory alive of Jim Greaves of the Barton Brothers, Ray Stewart, Barry Glynn, Tubby Andrews (Fat Ted), Steve Denton, Tony Capstick, Terry Clayton, Dave Green, Roger Moffatt and last but by no means least, Dave Kilner. There are of course, many more, but the above list were all well known to me and my life is poorer for their passing.

Weekly Wit Glad to be drunk A completely inebriated man was stumbling down the street with one foot on the curb and one foot in the gutter. A cop pulled up and said, “I’ve got to take you in, pal. You’re obviously drunk.” Our wasted friend asked, “Officer, are ya absolutely sure I’m drunk?” “Yeah, buddy, I’m sure,” said the copper. “Let’s go.” Breathing a sigh of relief, the wino said, “Thank goodness, I thought I was crippled.”
Pirate’s Misfortunes A pirate was talking to a “landlubber” in a bar. The landlubber noticed that, like any self-respecting pirate, this guy had a peg leg, a hook in place of one of his hands, and a patch over one eye. The land-lubber just had to find out how the pirate got in such bad shape. He asked the pirate, “How did you lose your leg?” The pirate responded, “I lost me leg in a battle off the coast of Jamaica!” His new acquaintance was still curious so he asked, “What about you hand. Did you lose it at the same time?” “No,” answered the pirate. “I lost it to the sharks off the Florida Keys.” Finally, the landlubber asked, “I notice you also have an eye patch. How did you lose your eye?” The pirate answered, “I was sleeping on a beach when a seagull flew over and crapped right in me eye.” The land-lubber asked: “How could a little seagull crap make you loose your eye?” The pirate snapped, “It was the day after I got me hook!”

SAY YEA While hip bands in Brooklyn tried to be the next Strokes, Yeasayer set about being as untrendy as possible. The plan has backfired: now they are the hottest gig going. According to aggregator website the Hype Machine, they are now officially world’s most blogged-about band. Yeasayer aren’t just an experimental rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. They’re crossover behemoths, hook laden “middle eastern-psych-snap-gospel” purveyors. The band was formed in 2006 and consists of three core members, Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Anand Wilder. They first came to attention after appearing at the SXSW festival in early 2007. Their debut album All Hour Cymbals was released in October 2007. To mass critical acclaim. International tour dates and festival appearances followed, during which the band honed its blend of live instrumentation and prerecorded samples. When it came time to record a second album, Yeasayer traveled to Woodstock, NY, and rented out the country home of percussionist Jerry Marotta. The resulting record, Odd Blood, appeared in early 2010 and showcases a different side of the band, with synthetic sounds and dance-inspired production playing a much larger role. Massive singles ‘Ambling Alp’ and ‘O.N.E’ have seen the band propelled into the conscious of music lovers around the world. This will be the last time you’ll be able to see this band in this small a venue. That’s right, it’s going to be arenas from here on out. Since the release of their critically acclaimed 2007 debut All Hour Cymbals (We Are Free), Yeasayer has been around the world and back again. While their first record was conceived in total artistic isolation, constant touring forced Yeasayer to engage with their contemporaries, making them strive to set themselves apart as the most exciting and forward thinking pop group working today. Never content to maintain the status quo, Yeasayer aims to exists ahead of the music curve, inspired equally by musicians hell-bent on sonic experimentation as well as their peers more comfortable in a pop context. With this ethos in mind Yeasayer emerged from the studio with their new full length aptly titled ODD BLOOD. If All Hour Cymbals was Yeasayer’s attempt at global and ambient cultural mash-up then their new record ODD BLOOD takes place on an off-world colony sometime after the singularity. Glimmering reverb haze is eschewed and replaced by a cavalcade of disorienting pitch effects and flickering ectoplasmic wisps. Instead of layered vocal harmonies the penitent processed vocals congeal into blots and blobs of otherworldly
chatter. Many organic elements are left behind and replaced by truly unique sounds and rhythms that inspire the body as much as the mind. At times Yeasayer sound as if they would be at home playing live in scene from Blade Runner or inside one of Oscar Neimeyer’s concrete modernist temples from the 1960s. ODD BLOOD is an album divided into two halves. The album’s opener “The Children” is a bold departure from their previous work, laying to rest any prior appraisals of the band beneath a pile of debris, as the sounds of prison labor support a damaged chorus of formant-shifted vocals. These musicians have a new set of studio tools at their disposal, and aren’t content to rest on their laurels, constantly experimenting with novel ways of using instruments and effects units. The rhythmic onslaught continues as towering pop songs like “Ambling Alp” and “Madder Red” butt up against each other, struggling for dominance, each song having its own distinct emotional identity, and all maintaining a uniquely Yeasayer approach to the anthemic sing-a-long. The latter half of ODD BLOOD is more experimental and playful in nature. It finds the band exploring more paranoid motifs, but never deprives the listener of persistent hooks and ear candy. Their songwriting runs the gamut of saccharine dance-pop, confessional dirges, character based story songs, and love ballads. Lyrically, this is a more mature and honest album than the first, as the band demonstrates a confidence to explore more personal themes amidst vividly depicted tales. This plays out at a blistering pace; clocking in at under forty minutes, ODD BLOOD embraces brevity without sacrificing depth or content. One thing remains constant: Yeasayer are accomplished audiologists who are willing to pilfer decades of pop sensibilities to find pieces of cultural history to include in their songs. The band sprays out a very cosmopolitan, very New York psychedelic, dubbed out, electro-pop vibe without ever seeming derivative or contrived. ROTTED MAN!
A bit of a full on “Metal Treat” for fans of the genre at the Corp on the 4th July. (Sort of Independence label day!) with a double headliner from: Man Must Die and The Rotted. Man Must Die formed in October 2002 in the underbelly of Glasgow, Scotland. It became evident that after the first rehearsal that something special was brewing, the songs practically wrote themselves and the intensity was devastating, four songs were quickly written and recorded in May of 2003. The band immediately set out to make a name for themselves by playing shows throughout the United Kingdom. One song was placed on the then MP3.com site and within two weeks, hit number one on the world-wide Death Metal chart. MMD also received an invitation to play Maryland Deathfest 2004 based solely on this first demo. The demo was sent out to a select number of labels and by August of 2003 the band had signed to Retribute Records. The Rotted’s subject matter reflects the times we live in, but unlike most bands that rant about the world as they see it, The Rotted do things differently. There is no preaching, no soap box bullshit with this band, The Rotted take the negative and twist and turn it and combine it with British gallows humour into something positive! The music is a unique blend of death metal, black metal, hardcore punk and dark cynical lyrical humour. Nothing contrived, no gimmicks, their music is honest and from the heart! The live shows are intense, fast and furious and littered with banter and audience participation; it provides a much-needed release for the band and the fans, a good time to be had by all! If extreme metal’s ya thing this is the show to be at! Man Must Die + The Rotted Co-Headliner: The Corporation, Sunday 4th July, £8.00 adv. Doors 7:00PM, age 14+

METAL HAMMER!
Anvil rocked their way back into the hearts of metal fans with the critically acclaimed 2008 documentary ‘Anvil! And to date, the band has released thirteen studio albums, and has been cited as having influenced many notable heavy metal groups, including Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica. The roots of Anvil began in April 1973 in Toronto, when high school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner began playing music together. The film has received high praise, which has put Anvil back into the public consciousness. Upon its release, the film garnered critical acclaim from many major publications, and has since brought the band renewed recognition, including opening slots with AC/DC and Saxon, propelling them to play several festivals including the Download Festival in 2009 at which they headlined the Tuborg stage. Rolling Stone called the movie “the year’s most praised rock doc.” And not only that the band played “Cat Scratch Fever” with Slash and Anthrax’s Scott Ian at the Sundance Film Festival where the movie premiered. Regarding the movie, Kudlow states: “ It stands as a prime example of what an industry — particularly the music industry — can put an artist through. At the same time, I take responsibility for our actions in the past. We were just sustaining who we are. Now someone’s come along and brought it to a new level. Now we’re getting praise for never selling out and sticking to our guns. It’s a vindicating thing. We got our notoriety on our own terms. We’ve done what we want. Not what someone told us to do.” The band is currently working on a new album titled Juggernaut of Justice, they have about 20 songs written, but are currently booked to tour until September 2010. That tour brings them to Sheffield with a gig at the O2
Academy on the 7th. This band is living proof of “never to give up on your dreams” and if you haven’t seen the Anvil film and you are in a band I suggest you buy or rent it….. “You are never to old and it’s only over when you are dead!” Anvil + Girlschool: O2 Academy, Wednesday 7th July, Door time: 7.00pm, Show time: TBC

artist: Die So Fluid Album:The World is too Big release date: 5th July This 3-piece London based band have been supporting some huge rock acts over the last few years. Bands such as Drowning Pool, Clawfinger, Girlschool, The Wildhearts and Feeder to name but a few. With that pedigree of gigs, it’s no real surprise to see them getting some of the limelight themselves now. Fronted by the female enigma that is Grog they boast a powerful blend of catchy dark rhythms and haunting melodies. The album kicks off with a beautiful vocal out on its own. ‘Figurine’ has got a kind of church like feel to it, that is until everything comes blasting in, nearly pushing you backwards as it does so. Then its pure rock! Pulsating, throbbing guitars, harsh drums and a vocal that has an ethereal quality to it. The danger for some rock albums is that they can sometimes be a bit one dimensional, a bit samey. I think that’s because they’re concentrating too much on the overall power sometimes. This album doesn’t do that. The title track ‘The World is too big for One Lifetime’ is a prime example. It begins quietly, with a feeling and a sense of being in the Everglades, floating amongst the alligators, or in an episode of True Blood. It then turns into an epic guitar lead song, full of emotion and feeling, one of the most in-depth rock songs I’ve heard in a long time. ‘Heart of Hollow’ follows and is completely the opposite. It’s very direct, full on and has an almost punky feel to it. Grog’s vocals are
artist: Mark Ronson single: Bang Bang Bang release date: 5th July We all know who Mark Ronson is don’t we? Surely……….well his obvious connections with Amy Wnehouse are legendary. His brilliance at being able to bring that brass ‘60’s sound back into our consciousness is now stamped in the history of UK music. His album ‘Version’ is fantastic. The lead track ‘God Put a Smile on Your Face’ is as classic as classic can possibly get, you’ll have heard it all over F1 and most other sports programs at least a hundred times. The Business Intl is his new band, his new project. ‘Record Collection’ is the title of this third album. It features Q-Tip…... No comment!........This first single has a female vocal and has a kinda French feel to it. Its very summery and really good fun……..even Q-Tip can’t spoil it. Actually, it reminds a bit of Gorillaz. A great pop song that has edge, has a cool retro feel to it, uses rap in a good way and is able to put a smile on your face. Beware! This is very catchy.
fantastic on this. ‘Raven’ and ‘How Vampire Kiss’ are again completely different; they’ve both got tribal drumming as its lead instrument at the beginning. Then you get a sense of The Pretenders first album as the guitars crash in. This must be the next single surely? ‘Themis’ is an out and out balled, it’s both beautiful and slightly unnerving at the same time and very original. ‘If Wishes Were Bullets’ is more of an Nirvana-esque tune, but what helps it stand out from that seminal band is the extraordinary vocal, unique is the only way I can describe it.. This band are in danger of becoming really really big! It’s an exciting album that is full of differing rock clichés but has originality about it. Its well worth checking out, probably its one of the most complete rock albums I’ve heard this year.

SUMMERSLAM WITH SUMMERLIN Say hello to snowballing faster than The Atari’s Chris Roe, SUMMERLIN; a group that's on a mission to put the party back into pop rock. The Doncaster/Leeds based 5 piece set out to carve their own niche with a unique blend of lighthearted power- pop. With their debut E.P, So Make Your Move out in July, the group aims to give the musical masses something to smile about. Summerlin’s Drew Lawson (vocals), Ben Jackson (guitar, vocals), Jake Greenwood (bass), Lee Whitaker (guitar) and Liam Broad (drums) met while their current bands were falling apart and were immediately bonded by their shared love of pop music and party. WHAT’S ON GUIDE
Three Valleys Beer Festival A number of pubs in the S18 and S17 area are teaming up on Saturday 17th July for a festival of real ale and entertainment. Each pub will offer an expanded selection of cask conditioned beers, with some also offering traditional cider, food, music and other attractions. A free bus service is being laid on, running every hour between Dronfield railway station and all the eleven pubs, with festival goers able
to hop on and off the bus as they please to try the different beers and attractions each venue has to offer. Local breweries featured will include Thornbridge, Barlow, Abbeydale, Kelham Island, Peak Ales, Bradfield, Steel City Brewing and Oakwell Brewery. There will also be some interesting beers from further a field too. In the cider department, look out for Woodthorpe Hall cider, produced on a small scale in Holmesfield.
The pubs have been encouraged to put this event on by the local branch of the campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), who saw the idea as a good opportunity to not just have a party but to encourage people to see what the pubs in the local communities have to offer and try some different craft brewed real ales and good quality artisan ciders, rather than sitting at home in front of the telly drinking cheap, mass produced booze from the supermarket!

FAMILY FUN DAY & CAR BOOT SALE IN AID OF THE CHILDRENʼS HOSPITAL CHARITY
I can’t think of any business that doesn’t want more business and increased profits, and we are the Mercury are certainly no different. Regular readers of the paper will have noticed that the paper has changed, for the better, and they will also have noticed that our sister company Mercury Media Ltd is promoting more and more events. We’re also reaching out to other organisations, for example Magic AM, and working together for mutual benefit. It’s at this point that I’d like you to look towards the bottom of the page where you will see a yellow banner outlining the details of the online newspaper nW Sheffield. I’d encourage you to go and have a look. This is a full online newspaper for North West Sheffield and it supports our increased distribution in that area. The Mercury Newspaper can now be found, in addition to all our usual distribution points, at the following venues. Burncross Surgery, Bevan Way, High Green Health Centre, Tompson Hill, Market Inn, Wortley Road, The Queens Head, Wortley Road, Fairlawns Surgery, Middlewood Road, Oughtibridge Surgery, Church Street, Deepcar Medical Centre, Manchester Road, The Peggy Tub, New Road, The Pen Nook, Helliwell
Lane, The Castle Inn, Bolsterstone, Stocksbridge Sports Centre, Moorland Drive, Tramways Medical Centre, Holme Lane, Stocksbridge Coop, Julios Cafe, Langsett Road. This is in addition to Asda Chapeltown and Morrisons in the Hillsborough Barracks which came online recently. DO YOU KNOW WHAT A USP IS? A USP is a’Unique Selling Point’ and it is the special quality about your business, organisation or service that make you different, and better than your competitors. I was recently speaking with a pet food supplier and after some discussion we established that he sold a range of dog food for dogs with delicate digestive systems. This is what he needs to advertise if he is to gain new customers. Everyone knows that pet food suppliers sell pet food it’s the special things that attract new business. This applies to every business. Give us a call, let’s establish your USP and you’ll be surprised how well this works. This is what we’re here for to increase business and profits for our advertisers. I’m not too keen on blowing our own vuvuzela but every now and then we have something new to tell you which we’re happy to share
THE ROSE AND CROWN CHARITY FUN DAY
CLUBLAND NEWS MEXBOROUGH CLUBSCENE SHOWCASE by Paul Walker
Last Saturday in Eckington the Rose and Crown hosted a charity day on behalf of The Meningitis Trust, in memory of Jaden Green. The event was held on what would have been his 3rd birthday. As well as stalls from many local businesses, there were games, raffles, tombola, a penalty shoot out, firemen, a bouncy castle and special appearances from Peppa Pig and Frank Plank! The day was great for the community and loads of the locals turned up to show their support. The fabulous cover band Junk Yard Dog played in the beer garden to a great response. A huge thanks vote of thanks for the generosity of everyone that went along, and congratulations to the organisers for making the event such a success. The hot summer weather helped the day along and with just short of £2,500 raised it was a great result for a great cause!
With the ever tightening of purse strings as the recession bites deeper and the T.V world cup dream firmly set aside for another 4 years – what better cost effective way to pass your Sunday mornings than a visit to a car boot sale. Once perhaps seen as the lowest form of market trading, the car boot sales of today offer a unique opportunity to purchase quality goods at unbelievably low prices. Venturing into this thriving market is Sheffield’s own Ski Village Family Entertainment Centre based up at Parkwood Springs, who are not only offering the chance to partake as a car boot trader or customer, but have also opened up their extensive family entertainment centre for the whole family to experience. From the unique Ski & Snowboarding slopes including a chance to try your hand at Tobogganing and Snow tubing – to a play at Jungle Jim’s and on Adventure Mountain. Follow that up with a game on the new state of the art indoor Ten Pin Bowling alley, before a relaxing visit to the family bar, beer garden and restaurant and it’s plain to see that the Ski Village are offering the whole family a low cost fun day out experience. Even better 5 – 10 year olds get free taster sessions on all activities, plus the car boot event is in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity. So treat the family in aid of a good cause and experience The Ski Village thrill. Sunday 11th.July 10am – 3pm, Sheffield Ski Village, Vale Rd. Parkwood Springs, Sheffield 0114 2760044
I recently caught up with a well-known duo by the name of Deep. Pete and Diane are a really nice, down-to-earth couple with a great show featuring a variety of soul, Motown and rock numbers. After many years in the business it becomes easy to spot the true pros from the rest, and Duo are a great act who really know how to entertain the audience. I spotted Paul Walker in the crowd, and he told me that he would like to feature the couple in a future column, given their long history in Clubland. Talking of Paul, I took my daughter along to Beighton Social Club on Saturday for the first time in a number of years. Working in West Yorkshire as I do now, it’s not often I get a weekend off to visit the clubs. Not having checked out the line up, I was delighted to see Paul on stage giving a great show that had the crowd singing and clapping along. Many readers won’t realize that I began working with Paul in 1994 as his lighting man, and along with Paul and Donna Bell I formed the original Two Out Of Three. We had a good chat about the old times, and I can recommend his show for a good night out! Keep looking for my occasional reports in future issues of the Mercury! Paul (Rocky Horror Show)
It’s been a long time since I had anything to report on as regards to clubland artists. I’ve been seeing nothing different from weekend to weekend, that was until I visited Handsworth Social on Sunday 20th June, when I went expecting to see Nicky Darren. Nicky didn’t turn up on the evening so a replacement had to be found at very short notice, this came in the shape of Tony Fletcher from Dewsbury way-on. Tony had a very smart appearance, a good voice and I thought I was going to be for a night of the ususal stuff, but to everyone’s suprise in the half full club Tony started pulling on wigs and putting on impersinations of all the top stars from Elvis to Mick Jagger and much more. His act was full of funny banter and movement simulating the stars, alot of work has gone into the act and it was highly polished all round. Tony started his entertaining career as an Elvis impersonator and has just kept adding to his reportoire ever since. Tony is one not to be missed when he is at your local venue as he makes a refreshing change from the usual male vocalists. Cheers mi dears Phil Spencer
JUST ABOUT HALFWAY MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
Well the weeks roll on and on and it hardly seems like another seven days have passed, but low and behold we’re now just about passed the midway mark in 2010. Some interesting facts and figures continue to bombard the Magic Breakfast Show production office on a daily basis. I mentioned last week just how safe the colour of your car makes you on the roads of South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. If your car is black, you’re most likely to be involved in a crash statistically because your vehicle is most like the colour of the road. There’s good news if you drive a white car or an orange car though, because you’re the safest. One thing I can vouch for in driving a black car is that we must have the hardest job when it comes to keeping the things clean anyway. I also mentioned the so called ‘underpants that can save your life’ developed in California. They come with sensors in the elastic to constantly monitor your blood pressure. I wonder if they work as well inside out and back to front! Here at Magic we’re giving you a chance to win a real must have accessory over the next few weeks – that being a brand new Pure Digital Radio. Make sure you’re tuned in at 8am precisely every day from next Monday and simply take a note of the first song you hear after the News, and then call us when you hear the same tune played again for a second time later in the day and you could be a winner. Tune in to Magic on AM – 990, 1305 or 1548, DAB digital radio or find us online at magicam.co.uk to find out more, and Good Luck!

PERSONAL INJURY
aps
Solicitor Chris Middleton of Sheffield Injury Lawyers, Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors new accident claims service, answers questions on Personal Injury Compensation Claims. I was a passenger in a road accident, can I make a claim? Yes. If you suffered an injury you can make a claim. Even if you were travelling in a family member or friend’s car, and the accident was their fault, you can still pursue a claim for compensation. In these circumstances it is important to remember that your compensation will be paid by the insurance company and not by the person responsible for the accident. If I claim against my employer for an accident at work, can they sack me? It is illegal for your employer to dismiss you simply for making a personal injury claim against them. If they were to do this you would be able to make a claim for wrongful dismissal under UK employment law. www.sheffieldinjurylawyers.co.uk/contact-us Employers are obliged to take out Employers Liability Insurance to cover them in the event of an accident in the workplace. If you make a claim for compensation for an injury at work it will usually be your employer’s insurer who will pay your compensation. If you are concerned about repercussions from your employer, speak to one of our advisors in confidence. I was injured in a road accident and the other driver was not insured, can I still claim? Yes. All motor insurers are required to pay into a scheme operated by the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB). This is effectively a contingency fund which is used to pay out claims arising from accidents caused by uninsured and ‘hit and run’ drivers. How long have I got to make a claim? For most types of injury, with a few exceptions, you have to make a claim for compensation within 3 years of the accident occurring. Can a child claim compensation for an injury? If a child under 18 has suffered an injury, a claim for compensation can be made on their behalf by a parent or guardian. If you suffered an injury as a child, and have not yet claimed, you can make a claim up to the age of 21. For further advice call 0114 248 4890 or visit www. sheffieldinjurylawyers.co.uk to find your local branch.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.
Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made standard ‘Mirror
Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.
“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the local authority get it all?”
Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future Care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a childs divorce, re-marrage or financial difficulties.

In Association with
This week, I have been after carp on my local club water. It’s nearer Manchester than Sheffield, but if it’s anything like other venues, it’s got ‘hot’ pegs. I arrived at 0400 on a mid week morning to find an angler already in the spot I fancied. After a short chat with him, he told me he would leave around lunch time so I set up in the woods on the opposite side to try and pinch a fish or two. Just after I’d made camp, he decided to leave having caught nothing overnight. I absolutely HATE moving pegs as I don’t travel light, and a shift meant negotiating TWO stiles! However, this particular water does have two ‘banker’ pegs and I had to make the effort. Thirty minutes of sweaty labour later and I’m firmly lodged in my original choice. Other anglers just waking from their slumbers are horrified to see me move before they have had chance to whip a bait bucket across to claim it as their own…..don’t be last! The reason this particular peg is so good is that the surrounding snags and overhanging growth give the carp plenty of cover from bright sunlight and angling pressure. (of which there is plenty!). Casting my two rods out along the far margin of the sheltered bay, I manage to hook into my first fish within 20 minutes, much to the disgruntlement of those who missed out. Hitting the net at a few ounces under 20lbs, it’s a great start and I’m most pleased. I’m only on for a short day session, so it couldn’t have got away to a better start. To cut a long story short, throughout the day, I managed six carp, all doubles between 12lbs20lbs, and no-one else on the water caught! Would you have moved? It can make all the difference on the day, especially if you have only limited time, so if you can see fish elsewhere and they are not in front of you, MOVE! You can’t catch them if they are not there!

On a more sombre note; sad news reached me recently of a death by drowning at a beauty spot near Rotherham after a group of teenagers chose to cool off during the hot weather. The lake in Wath-uponDearne is a popular spot and the youngster recovered by police divers is believed to be only in his midteens. By the time this is published, the young fella will have been named and some of you may even know him. I’m sure every angler who reads this column will join me in saying that our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this tragic time. This tragedy is unfortunately likely to happen again if the heatwave continues and kids are tempted to go for a dip in a refreshing pool. Try and educate your youngsters about the dangers of water, the unseen hazards below the surface and the unnecesary risks they may be taking. Reminding them of this heartbreaking event may just prevent another…. Tight lines, Clint

Eclipse Weekend HORSE RACING by Timelord
This week’s big race is the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, a Group 1 race over 10 furlongs. This is an all-aged race that attracts top class horses and tends to give some comparability between generations. This year’s renewal is no exception and there are some really good entries. The top stables dominate the entries once again this year. Top rated in my system is John Gosden’s Dar Re Mi – an admirable triple Group 1 winner. This versatile mare looks tailor-made for this contest, is a course and distance winner, and will be a real danger to all. In my book she is far and away the best of the older brigade in this race. Aidan O’Brien had entered Cape Blanco, but he now looks destined to run in the King George. He has, however, also entered six others including Viscount Nelson. My preference of his runners is for Viscount Nelson, who gets my second best rating from his fourth in the French Derby where he beat Cape Blanco by something like 4 lengths – form which doesn’t seem too shabby given Cape Blanco’s exploits last weekend. I have long had quite a high regard for this one and think that the Sandown Park 10 furlongs could be right up his street. His form figures aren’t that impressive so he could go off at a reasonable value price. (At the risk of over-repeating myself I must say that the French Derby form, which is beginning to work out, could prove to be the key piece of form for this year’s crop of three year olds.) This race is the first generational clash at this level in the UK this year and though some pundits have been a little disparaging about this year’s crop of three year olds I am not so sure that they are all that bad. In addition I reckon that the weight-for-age scale at this time of year can favour the three year olds quite markedly. In view of the likely
Two New Signings for Steelers ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle
Last week the Steelers announced two brand new additions to their roster, Derek Campbell (ex-Coventry Blaze) and a new face to the UK, Neil Clark. Campbell is a player who has proven that he can score alongside adding to the “team toughness” Head Coach Dave Matsos is known to strive for, having fought most of the league’s heavyweights last season. Clarke comes to Sheffield after a season in Wichita. “Clark comes very highly recommended,” said Matsos, “again another big solid winger who I know will score and contribute for us, Clark also has an edge, can make that big hit and look after his self and his team mates.” Over 200 fans filled Abbeydale Sports Club last Thursday to attend a fan forum which featured new members of the Steelers’ management Geraint Newman (social media/marketing) and Helena Platts (finance/legal), alongside GM Mike O’Connor and owner Bob Phillips. They were accompanied on stage by representatives from the SSSC, FAB, Dronfield and Bassetlaw Bandits
odds I think that Viscount Nelson (currently 8/1) represents the best value in the race but Dar Re Mi (11/4) represents a significant danger from a leading yard. In the other races at Sandown I like Moorhouse Lad to lift the Group 3 Coral Charge Stakes, Kyllachy Star for the Class 2 Coral Challenge Stakes Handicap and Lady Darshaan for the Listed Coral Distaff. Over at Haydock Park Michael Jarvis’s once raced gelding Shubaat can secure the Class 2 Betfred Handicap on his way to better things. In the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks I am very sweet on the chances of previous course and distance winner Les Fazzani although Barshiba and Polly’s Mark will test her mettle. The Old Newton Cup Handicap looks typically tricky but Pevensey can give us a run for our money at decent each way odds, beware however as there are plenty of dangers with good chances, chief of which is probably Hillview Boy. So, in the televised big races on Saturday my selections are: Sandown Park 2.00 Moorhouse Lad dangers: Johnny Mudball, Wi Dud, Hamish Mc Gonagall; 2.35 Kyllachy Star dangers: Collateral Damage, Huzzah, Dunn’o, Opus Maximus; 3.10 Viscount Nelson (Nap) dangers: Dar Re Mi; 3.40 Lady Darshaan dangers: Sweet Sonnet, Jacqueline Quest. Marie De Medici. Haydock Park 2.15 Shubaat dangers: Kingdom of Munster, Music of the Moor; 2.50 Les Fazzani (n.b.) dangers: Barshiba, Polly’s Mark; 3.25 Pevensey (e/w) dangers: Hillview Boy, Demolition, Record Breaker, Fiery Lad, Munsef, Alcalde, Hanoverian Baron. Next week sees the midweek Newmarket July meeting featuring the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes and July Cup races. supporters groups. Questions asked were mainly concerned with the club’s financial position along with that of their operating company, currently going through liquidation, Yorkshire Sport Ltd. Phillips reassured fans with the news that their season ticket money for 2010-11 was safe in a seperate account to the YS Ltd account, and that a new operating company was in the works. In an article featured on popular website prohockeynews.com, Phillips claimed that the current problems at YS ltd are nothing
Last week’s results Newmarket Saturday 2.20 Sweetie Time - N/R (incidentally Khor Sheed, which had been beaten by Sweetie Time first time out, won this race @ 3/1, so watch out for Sweetie Time running in the near future); 2.50 Laaheb – won 5/2 3.25 Arabian Gleam – N/R Newcastle Saturday 2.05 Barney Mc Grew – won 16/1 3.20 La Vecchia Scuola – 6th @25/1. Overturn – won 14/1. (I narrowed the race down to two selections but unfortunately made the wrong choice!) Windsor Saturday 3.00 Moyenne Corniche – N/R; Curragh Saturday 1.45 Viscount Nelson – N/R; (My top “danger” Precious Gem won @ 9/2); 2.20 Flying Cloud - 2nd @3/1; 4.00 Merchant of Dubai – N/R; Curragh Sunday 2.50 Equiano – N/R 3.50 High Award 5th @ 12/1; 4.20 Cape Blanco – won 7/2. (The race was actually run at 5.10.) Overall this was not a bad weekend for this column. We had 12 races, with 3 winners @ 5/2, 16/1 and 7/2. There were 6 non runners from my 12 first choice selections. Of my “dangers”, Overturn won @ 14/1 and Precious Gem won @ 9/2. Not counting the dangers that won, we therefore had 12 selections, 6 runners, 3 winners and one second place returning 25 points on an investment of 6 points. If you managed to back the selected winners combined with the “dangers” that won then well done! Finally, here is a quick reminder from last week’s “Timelord” column about the Irish Derby: “This race should give a clear collateral form line between the merits of the respective Derbys and is well worth watching. If I am right and Lope De Vega’s form is franked handsomely then he could be a good thing for the Arc even though it is still a long way off.” Good luck with this week’s investments. compared to the problems at the club when he took over from previous owner. He also stated that he had found recent reporting in The Star to be “...very disappointing to say the least.” after controversial headlines like “Steelers Bust!” left fans in turmoil and concerned as to the safety of their beloved team. Off-ice and on-ice the team will be ready and raring to go for the 2010-11 season, and season ticket forms are available to collect from Entrance B of the Sheffield Arena.

Whitehaven 14 Sheffield Eagles 24 RUGBY LEAGUE by Jim Collins
Sheffield Eagles produced a late two-try burst to beat Whitehaven in an emotion charged game. The ground was silent before the kick-off as Ros Purdham, the wife of former Haven player Garry Purdham, released 12 white doves in memory of her husband and the other 11 victims of the West Cumbria shootings. The Eagles had to work hard for their win, but they also made hard work of claiming three vital points in the chase for a play-off place. Coach Mark Aston’s decision to play four forwards on the bench paid off as the big men gradually wore down a determined Whitehaven team. Centre Menzie Yere scored two tries but the game-breaker score came from hooker Craig Cook as the lead changed for the fifth time in the game. It was Cook’s 18th try of the season. Mike Burnett, on loan from Hull FC, came into the second row. Tim Bergin returned on the wing with Tangi Ropati also moving out wide and Jason Mossop coming in at centre. Eagles put in some strong defence to hold out Whitehaven early in the game with Misi Taulapapa and Bergin covering well at the back. If the Eagles had built on some good drives by forwards Mitch Stringer and Ryan Hepworth and used positions better they could have led at the break. . Instead the Eagles trailed to a try from dummy half by winger Derry Eilbeck ten minutes before the break. The opening of the second half was very different as Cook and stand-off Brendon Lindsay combined to send second rower Peter Green crashing over for a try. The Eagles took the lead when after Stringer and Ged Corcoran had set up the position before Lindsay collected his own chip and passed out to Yere - who had been threating with some of his runs but had been closed down quickly by Whitehaven - to finish. Lindsay
was unable to add either goal. Whitehaven retook the lead with a Craig Calvert try and Carl Rudd goal before the Eagles came back with breaks by Trevor Exton and Misi Taulapapa opening the way for Yere to touchdown for his second try. Winger Tim Bergin took over the kicking duties but his effort agonisingly hit the outside of a post. The lead didn’t last as Calvert scored his second try and there were a few scares close to the try line before in the final nine minutes the Eagles took control. Cook twisted and turned from dummy half, looked around for a runner to pass to but with nobody there saw a gap open and did the job himself touching down under the posts. Bergin kicked the goal. With a minute to go Lindsay made the game safe as his chip was fumbled by the Haven fullback Josh Veivers and the stand-off kicked on again and completed the try. Bergin added the goal. Whitehaven: Josh Veivers; Derry Eilbeck, Dexter Miller, Rob Jackson, Craig Calvert; Carl Rudd, Motu Tony; Andy Thornley, Greame Mattinson, Kyle Bibb, Spencer Miller, Danny Barker, Leroy Joe. Subs: Carl Sice, Howard Hill, Kurt Wilton, Mark Jackson. Tries: Eilbeck (29), Calvert (55, 69). Goals: Rudd 1/3. Eagles: Misi Taulapapa, Tangi Ropati, Menzie Yere, Jason Mossop, Tim Bergin; Brendon Lindsay, Matty Brooks; Ryan Hepworth, Craig Cook, Mitch Stringer, Trevor Exton, Mike Burnett, Dane McDonald. England to make Boss on Mulgrew Ticket giveaway for Grimsby game World Cup Final and triallists WEEKLY FANS COLUMN by Jon Warburton At approximately 0620 BST yesterday morning, the defeated England team touched down at Heathrow Airport after what has been an extremely disappointing 2010 World Cup campaign. But around eleven hours earlier, one English team was about to embark on ninety minutes that could have stood them in great stead to represent their country at the Final. Rotherham’s Howard Webb, and his assistants Darren Cann and Michael Mullarkey put in an impeccable performance that went some way to restoring faith in the ability of the English to perform on the world stage. It also served to restore faith in the standard of officiating at the tournament, after shocking decisions in both games the previous day. Howard Webb’s management of the Brazil v Chile 2nd round tie was etched with professionalism and control from start to finish. Taking into account the language barrier that has the potential to strike discord in these fixtures, he was visually clear with all his decision making and left no doubt has to who was in charge on the field of play. In a game played by two South American teams there was always going to be the potentially for trickery and deception, but Webb was wise to it throughout and encouraged the game to maintain a natural flow. Similar excellence was shown by his assistants who displayed almost flawless accuracy when it came to several tight offside calls. It is not very often that officials get the credit that they deserve, but ITV’s co-commentator Jim Beglin observed that the first time Howard Webb had made a questionable decision was the 85th minute, which is highly commendable. So well done to you Howard, and I hope that the silver lining of England’s dismal failure at this year’s World Cup tournament, is that our nation will be represented by a team of English officials who on Monday night’s showing are at the top of their game.

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Any possibility of Scottish defender Charlie Mulgrew coming to Bramall Lane has evaporated and the Blades are continuing to look at other possibilities for their new-look back four. The Aberdeen player is expected to leave this summer and has been linked with a number of clubs but Kevin Blackwell has confirmed that his interest has been shifted elsewhere: “We did speak with his agent but couldn’t agree terms and now we move on because that deal is effectively finished.” With Chris Morgan, Andy Taylor and new signing Johnny Ertl the only experienced defenders left at the club the United boss will now run the rule over three triallists: “I will have a good look at the lads from Spain, France and Belgium, two of whom have had offers from elsewhere but they want to try their luck in England. “The one from Spain has made over 70 successive appearances for Atletico Madrid, is still only 23 and is keen to pursue his career over here.” Blackwell isn’t restricted as to how long he has the triallists for but will release and who don’t fit the bill quickly.
DODGY DECISIONS DUMP ENGLAND OUT OF THE WORLD CUP
WORLD CUP by Neil Cardwell Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda denied England a second equalising goal against Germany when Frank Lampard’s shot clearly crossed the line to subject England to their heaviest ever World Cup Finals defeat. But it was not this decision that dumped England out of the World Cup. Throughout the game that England lost 4-1 against the auld enemy, the England team and individual players were a very poor second best to a German side that also looked inadequate at the back. Throughout the build ups to the World Cup Finals Fabio Cappello decided to swap and change the side he used in both qualifying and friendly games. As a result England went into the World cup without a settled side. The only players who knew each other’s play intimately were those that played together at club level. Before the current World Cup finals, under Mr Cappello, how many times have England started two consecutive games with the same starting eleven? In fact how many times have the same eleven players started any games? When Mr Cappello named his squad to take to South Africa he decided to include Tottenham’s Ledley King in the squad, a player with known fitness and injury problems. He also decided to include Jamie Carragher, a player with huge limitations with regard to his pace and who had previously taken the decision to turn his back on England because he wasn’t guaranteed a place. Mr Cappello also decided to include Matthew Upson in his squad, another player with very limited pace who has had a nightmare season at club level with West Ham United. On arrival in South Africa an unfortunate injury to Rio Ferdinand necessitated the call up of another centre back. Mr. Cappello chose to call up Michael Dawson, a player who has good pace, excellent mobility and who has had a cracking season playing at club level for Tottenham. However, Mr. Cappello decided not to give him a single kick in any game despite having a side that obvi-

Beevers braced for tough pre-season
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Owls defender Mark Beevers is prepared for the tough pre-season schedule which lies ahead when the squad regroup next week. Wednesday head to Austria on Saturday 3 July for a demanding week of training followed by a game against local side ASK Anif on 10 July. From then, Wednesday have seven domestic pre-season fixtures on the road (click here for full list) before the start of the new season. Speaking on the trip to Austria, Beevers said: “I’ve got a feeling it is going to be completely different from the last couple of pre-seasons. “Some of the lads from Preston have told me that it is an absolute nightmare. They have said that it is going to involve a lot of graft, plenty of gym work and lots of running.” The gruelling pre-season workout, which will include a combination of hard work on the training pitch and eight friendly matches in total, should stand the Owls in good stead for the 2010/11 campaign. But Beevers is ready for the ously lacked pace and mobility at the back. For the first game in the group stages Mr Cappello decided to play with a striker who can’t score goals, two central midfield players who have always struggled to play together because their style of play is too similar, a left winger who was suffering from illness, a centre back who was likely to break down at any given time and he still didn’t know who his best goalkeeper was. All too quickly the dodgy fitness of King and the under par physical condition of Milner forced substitutions. Who did Mr. Cappello decide to bring on for King? Carragher whose lack of pace saw him commit a rash challenge and receive a caution from the referee. A blunder by Robert Green in the England goal had forced England to chase the game if they wanted to win it. But with possible substitutions very limited due to those made in the first half, options were very few. Eventually Peter Crouch was brought on as a substitute with only ten minutes of the game left. The result was an embarrassing draw against that not so well known force in world football, the United States of America. Mr. Cappello decided to make changes for the second group game, but not good ones! Gareth Barry was brought into the side in the centre of midfield pushing Steven Gerrard, one of the better players against the US, into a position wide on the left, where he is far from effective and can be a liability defensively. The hapless Green was replaced in goal by David James, who most thought should have been in the team from the beginning. Mr. Cappello decided to keep Carragher in at the back alongside John Terry, leaving the centre defence woefully short of pace and it was no surprise when he was cautioned and therefore ruled out of the third group game. Mr. Cappello decided to start the game with Heskey back in the side. Was it then really a surprise when England could do no better than a boring 0-0 stalemate against another team who should have only provided shooting practice? In the third group game against the smallest nation competing in the World Cup finals, Mr. Cappello decided to bring Upson into the starting eleven in place of the suspended Carragher. Milner came back in, but on the right of midfield, and Mr. Cappello

We have to look forward and target automatic promotion next year. “We’ll be one of the biggest teams in the league and other clubs will raise their game against us and we must make sure that we are ready to handle that. “We have got some quality players in the team particularly at this level and now we have to show that on the pitch.”
decided to keep Gerrard on the left, even after bringing on Joe Cole as a substitute! The England performance was much improved, but against a side that was never going to test them thoroughly enough at the back. England scraped past Slovenia 1-0 with a Jermain Defoe goal. They took second place in the group, to the United States! and set up a far more difficult possible route to the final than if they had won the group as they should have, setting up a last 16 game against the Germans. Most unusually Mr. Cappello decided to stick with the same starting eleven against Germany as had started the previous game against Slovenia. This decision meant that the ponderous centre back pairing of Upson and Terry was always going to be exposed for pace against opponents with mobility. Germany did this on several occasions in the first half hour, including twice when scoring two goals. England pulled a goal back with an Upson header and they were then denied an equalising goal when Lampard’s shot crossed the line without a goal being awarded. Any glimmer of hope this gave the loyal England fans was soon extinguished when Germany scored two further second half goals that once again exposed England’s frailties and naivety at the back. Trailing by 4 goals to 1, and with England desperately needing goals, who did Mr. Cappello decide to introduce as a substitute? Emile Heskey, a player who needs signposts and a map to have any idea of where the goals are and who needs to go fishing to put anything in the back of a net! Defeat to the Germans means that England are left with only one hope of having representation in the World Cup final. Local referee Howard Webb has performed excellently in the three games that he has officiated in so far. Certainly he has been far more consistent and reliable in the games he has taken charge of compared with the performances of the dismally disappointing players and management of the national team. What were the decisions that dumped England out of the World Cup? They were all those of Signor Fabio Capello.
