SHEFFIELD UK CITY OF CULTURE 2013 – BRASS BAND CENTRAL The Department for Culture, Media and Sport recently announced that Sheffield has made it onto the shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2013 title. This follows an intense bid process throughout 2009 involving Sheffield City Council, CreativeSheffield and Sheffield’s Culture Board. The other three cities short-listed are Birmingham, Derry and Norwich; essentially meaning that Sheffield will fly the flag for North of England. Success will, however, be measured by the very act of participating, creating and making, and the Sheffield brass band community is ready to be part of that success. Within the area covered by the Sheffield post code there are around 30 well

established brass bands many of whom have been in existence for over 100 years? Long thought to be the domain of the male working class and having largely evolved out of the mining community, in the modern brass band you could easily find a company director playing alongside a plumber, or a nurse sitting next to a policeman. Some of our home grown brass bands have nurtured players of international standing and many local bands themselves are of world renown. For the most part, although the brass players are amateurs and the bands non-profit making organisations; they could easily hold their own in any professional orchestra on any stage in Europe, but that’s not why they do it.

Brass band players love the music that they play, much of it is ‘traditional band music’ specifically written or arranged for the brass band format, but also there are a host of contemporary brass band composers who provide modern challenging pieces of music that is conspicuous by its absence in any other genre. There is, however, a downside for all this home grown aptitude; during the last two decades there have been significant financial difficulties for many of the brass band sponsors and many of the businesses and corporations supporting our local talent have reduced or ceased their subsidies. The fact that there are still approximately 30 brass bands within the Sheffield

area is a testament to their sheer determination. The recent TV series centred on Dinnington Colliery Band highlighted many of the issues affecting all our local brass bands and it took national television coverage and a very effectual Sue Perkins to drag them into the 21st Century where they have now received just reward for their efforts. But what of the lesser known local brass bands like Oughtibridge - www. oughtibridgebrassband. co.uk - or Loxley Silver Band - www.loxleysilverband.org.uk who, between them, have been in existence for over 240 years? A look at either of their websites will show you what they are doing; they are providing a cultural service to the local Sheffield community and they, and many

others like them, deserve our support. Because, not only are they continuing to maintain and enhance a local tradition, they are nurturing and developing the lives of the younger members of our villagelike community by providing the opportunity for them to learn to play a musical instrument, be part of a team environment, grow in confidence, increase their self-worth, have fun and enjoyment while creating outstanding music and ultimately put something back into our local community; how many other ‘hobbies’ can do all that? The winner of the four short listed will be announced later this month and, if successful, Sheffield UK City of Culture 2013 Bid leadership team will launch the commission in 2011,

NEW OM SHOWRO NOW OPEN!

thereby enabling early investments to be put in place in time for 2013. They have said that; ‘we won’t just ask what the 2013 Programme can do for the people of the city; we will ask the people what they can do for the Programme’! The brass band community of Sheffield is here, we’re ready and we’re waiting! Come and support Loxley Silver Band at Weston Park on Sunday July 11th 2010 from 2:00 ‘til 4:00pm – for a ‘free’ concert – bring the whole family and a picnic and get a taste of how the brass band community of Sheffield could help to put Sheffield on the cultural map.

COPLEYʼS COLUMN I have to confess that my knowledge of football is not what it was as my favoured four in the World Cup were Brazil, Argentina, France and Portugal. How wrong can a man be? I did, however, stand alone in stating that England would win nothing. A clever advertising hoarding caught my eye at Gilder’s, Meadowhead. It depicted three magnificent lions with the caption “@ Gilder’s, the team that won’t let you down!” Whoever is responsible for that topical masterpiece showed sheer brilliance. The wonderful Sunny Daye attended my breakfast club this week with Terry Herrington, who was musical director for Ronny Dukes and Ricky Lee. He was accompanying Ronnie on the night that he had a fatal heart attack on stage. Terry is perhaps best remembered for his long stint at Greasborough club, where he appeared with all the top stars of the day, including Bob Monkhouse and Matt Monro. Terry and his wife were delightful company and when I went to settle my bill, it transpired that he had paid for me. I am delighted to announce the engagement of my granddaughter, Gemma, to Gary Cahill, a top defender who spent some time on loan at Bramall Lane when previously with Aston Villa, and who now plays for Bolton Wanderers.

You won’t hear me joining in when the debates are on about the ridiculously high wages of footballers in the Premiership. My very good wishes go out to the happy couple. Refurbishment work has commenced on the Victoria pub, Stubley Lane Dronfield, and by the look of what has already been done, it is going to be fantastic. Landlord Chris Clark has worked tirelessly since taking over, and I predict a rosy future for this hostelry, so close to my house. Shopping for holiday shirts and shorts, I was amazed how inexpensive everything is. Prices on everything have come down, which should well offset the increase in value added tax. For me, the biggest pain is going to be the increase in the price of petrol. I am on the lookout for a new car, and the petrol guzzlers can be bought for a fraction of earlier prices. The final Big Brother is now into the third week, and I can’t seem to get interested. The house is full of nondescripts, and there is not one who I would like to socialise with on the outside, with the exception of Steve, the man who lost both his legs in Northern Ireland whilst serving his country. He is not at all confrontational in the house and has so far received no nominations. I will, however, not put a jinx on him by tipping him as the winner.

Andy Murray, our best (only?) hope for a Wimbledon champion, spurned his best ever opportunity with the shock defeat of Roger Federer but was totally outclassed by Nadal. This country is in a bad run, sporting wise, which does not bode well for our Ryder Cup team. Most of Saturday night was spent looking at Russ Dennett’s fingers. Russ is the finest guitar player I have ever seen playing live, and is far too good to be playing in pubs, when he could acquit himself well with any band in the country. Geoff Allen, father of Def Leppard drummer Rick and Robert, (Taylor Swift’ manager) is very poorly in hospital. Geoff is a smashing chap, and I am sure you will join with me in wishing him well. The date has been set for the benefit night for Glen Dale. This will be at Wadsley Bridge WMC on 3rd September. Final details are not as yet to hand, but Paul Shane has promised to put in an appearance, Cassie Kennedy (one for the boys) has kindly agreed to appear, and Glen’s two lads, Dave Lee and Lee Johns, both fabulous singers, will be there to support Dad. It would be fitting if I were to sing that old Max Bygraves classic ‘You Need Hands’ whilst Glen could do a rendition of ‘Jake the Peg. Perhaps not!

Come and enjoy fast paced, action packed football right here in Sheffield when the greatest names of the game go head-to-head once more in pursuit of the most coveted prize in indoor football. Tickets priced £7 - £20 (booking fee may apply) are on sale now. The Masters Cup returns to the Sheffield Arena on Sunday 25th July with 6 of the best teams in the region ready to battle it out for the Yorkshire Masters title and the chance to qualify for September’s Grand Final. Barnsley return as Yorkshire champions and are eager to hang on to their title. However, they face stiff competition from the two Steel City teams, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, the return of Doncaster and Hull with a point to prove and Huddersfield, who are making their Masters debut. Come and see teams packed full of stars including the likes of Benito Carbone, Dean Windass, Kevin Pressman, Efan Ekoku, Jon McCarthy, Scott Oakes, Ian Bennett,

The lovely people at the arena have given us a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky reader so they can go and see this fantastic event. Simply answer the following question and send your answer along with daytime contact details to dave@mercurynewspaper.co.uk before 12 noon on Fri 16th July. What position did Rod’s latest album ‘Soulbook’ chart in the UK? Closing Date: 12 Noon - 16/07

Weekly Wit

An elderly woman went to her local doctor’s office and asked to speak with her doctor. When the receptionist asked why she was there, she replied, “I’d like to have some birth control pills.” Taken back, the doctor thought for a minute and then said, “Excuse me, Mrs. Glenwood, but you’re 80 years old. What would you possibly need birth control pills for?” The woman replied, “They help me sleep better.” The doctor considered this for a second, and continued… “How in the world do birth control pills help you sleep?” The woman said, “I put them in my granddaughter’s orange juice, and I sleep better at night.” “Mister, why doesn’t this cow have any horns?” asked the young lady from a nearby city. The farmer cocked his head for a moment, then began in a patient tone, “Well, ma’am, cattle can do a powerful lot of damage with horns. Sometimes we keep’em trimmed down with a hacksaw. Other times we can fix up the young ‘uns by puttin’ a couple drops of acid where their horns would grow in, and that stops ‘em cold. Still, there are some breeds of cattle that never grow horns. But the reason this cow don’t have no horns, ma’am, is ‘cause it’s a horse.”

CHANTEL TOOT TOOT BLUES Realising at an early age that if you picked up a guitar you got attention, especially from her dad whose guitar it usually was, it was inevitable that she would get one of her own. So at the ripe old age of three, she got her first guitar, a half size acoustic. That will be Chantel McGregor. At seven she started lessons but soon noticed that not only did the electric guitars have a smaller neck, making them ideal for little hands, but they could also make a lot more noise. After more lessons and a lot more noise and at the grand old age of eight she became the youngest person in the country to pass a Rockschool grade (Clever girl). More lessons followed and with them came the realisation that if you want people to listen, you need to sing! So it came to pass that at the age of twelve she arrived at the famous Melborn Hotel in Bradford to play and sing at the weekly jam session. Helped and encouraged by all the musicians, she developed rapidly into an incredible rock and blues musician. Now described as a “prodigy”, a visit from a major label soon followed and at fourteen she was told “great voice, but girls don’t play guitar like that!” by the head of their A&R. Their advise was to change styles because boys would be intimidated was met with an attitude of “that’s their problem! I’m not changing!” Singing and playing on national television and radio soon followed. A meeting with two renowned producers soon lead to a change in direction from live performance to recording and writing. This coupled with exams and advice meant an end to live performing for four years. As seems common in the music industry, once lawyers get involved, things can get messy!!!!! Now qualified at grade eight and the holder of the prize for outstanding musicianship at the world renowned Leeds College of Music, a chance meeting with a well known local band saw Chantel back at what she does best! - Singing and playing with feel to die for. This has now lead to the formation of the “Chantel McGregor Band” a rock/blues trio, with Alex Jeffrey on bass and Martin Rushworth on drums. And you can check out this talented lady when she performs in Sheffield with a gig at the Corp on the 10th. Yeah! No doubt about it “Girls can rock!!” Chantel McGregor + Support: The Corporation, Saturday 10th July, £8.00 adv., Doors 7:00PM, age 14+

Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen. In Kingston, Hibbert met Henry “Raleigh” Gordon and Nathaniel “Jerry” McCarthy, forming a group whose early recordings were attributed to “The Flames” and, possibly, “The Vikings”. Having renamed the group the Maytals, the vocal trio recorded their first album, “Never Grow Old – presenting the Maytals”, for producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd at Studio One in 1962-63. With musical backing from Dodd’s house band, the legendary Skatalites, the Maytals’ closeharmony gospel singing ensured instant success for the 1964 release, overshadowing Dodd’s other up-and-coming gospel trio, The Wailers. The original album augmented by studio out-takes from the Studio One sessions was re-released by Heartbeat/Rounder Records in 1997, and is essential listening for Maytals and Skatalites fans. After staying at Studio One for about two years, the group moved on to do sessions for Prince Buster (released in 1974) before recording their second album produced by Byron Lee in 1965 . However, the band’s musical career was rudely interrupted in late 1966 when Hibbert was arrested and imprisoned on drugs possession charges. Following Hibbert’s release from jail towards the end of 1967, the band officially changed their name to Toots and the Maytals and began working with Chinese-Jamaican producer Leslie Kong, a collaboration which produced three classic albums and a string of hits throughout the late sixties and early seventies – “Do the Reggay”, a 1968 single widely credited with coining the word reggae, “Pressure Drop”, “54-46 was my number” and “Monkey Man”, the group’s first international hit in 1970 . The group was featured in one of reggae’s greatest breakthrough events – The Harder They Come, the 1972 film and soundtrack starring Jimmy Cliff, named as one of Vanity Fair’s Top 10 Best Soundtracks of all time. Following Kong’s death in 1971, the group continued to record with

WOULD YOU ADAM AND EVE IT! Written for the theatrical adaptation of Paul Auster’s novel ‘Timbuktu’, Adam Green’s latest album is another off-kilter triumph of swirling arrangements and skilful composition. “I was still a teenager when we got our record deal with Rough Trade, so I was really living a double life,” Adam Green recalls. “On the one hand, I was touring the world and making albums, but on the other, my parents didn’t really have any idea what I was doing. I come from a family where everyone has degrees: my dad’s a professor of neurology at Columbia University, my mom’s a psychiatrist who works at the Museum of Natural History, and my brother’s an astrophysicist. I’m absolutely the first person in my family to not go to college (Rock ‘n” Roll!). To them, it was absurd that I had to do this other thing.” His obsession with this “other thing” has given the world one of today’s most acclaimed and arguedabout young artists. With a style that steps closer to the likes of Bacharach and Jacques Brel with each release, Green has created Gemstones, his third solo record, combining his singular songwriting vision and plaintive, almost-angelic tenor with elegant melodies and playful art-pop arrangements. Gemstones is an album whose songs transcend indie rock in favour of more enduring virtues, and it offers 15 prime examples of Green’s sculpted-yetirreverent songcraft that has won him a sizeable and ever-increasing audience in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan, where he’s toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller and The Strokes. Rolling Stone praised his “pure genius,” Mojo referred to him as an “unexpectedly rich talent” and Elle Girl called him “wicked awesome.” Adam Green was 14 when he and partner

Kong’s former sound engineer, Warwick Lyn; produced by Lyn and Chris Blackwell of Island Records, the group released three best-selling albums, and enjoyed international hits with Funky Kingston in 1973 and Reggae Got Soul in 1976. Toots and the Maytals’ compositions would be given a second airing in 197880 during the reggae-punk and ska revival period in the UK, when The Specials included “Monkey Man” on their 1979 debut album and The Clash produced their version of “Pressure Drop”. Having toured throughout the world for many years, Toots and the Maytals disbanded in the early 1980s, but reformed in the early 90s to continue touring and recording successfully. Sublime recorded cover versions of some Maytals songs in the 1990s as well. The band recently won the 2005 Grammy award for best reggae album True Love, an album consisting of re-recorded versions of their classics alongside popular and legendary musicians such as Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Keith Richards, as well as popular artists today such as No Doubt, Ben Harper, The Roots, and Shaggy. Toots and the Maytals remains a relevant influence on today’s global music scene with artists from Amy Winehouse to Sublime re-recording classic tracks. Toots recieved another Grammy nomination for his 2008 release “Light Your Light. In recent years Toots has toured with The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow and Los Lonely Boys. Always recording when not touring “Flip & Twist” will be release on 4/20/10 on Toot’s own D & F Music label. Look for Toots on the road spring and fall in the US and summer in Europe. Kimya Dawson joined forces to form the Moldy Peaches, whose albums incorporated a resourceful mix of youthful sweetness, pottymouthed surrealism and perfect pop craftsmanship. By the time the duo went on indefinite hiatus in 2001, they’d captivated critics and won fans around the world, while propelling New York’s Antifolk scene to international prominence. As a solo artist, Green has quickly evolved from the Moldy Peaches’ spontaneity to a more instinctive, crafted approach. “Moldy Peaches,” he states, “was about going from idea to execution in five minutes. We’d think of something, we’d write the song, we’d record it, and it was out. We only recorded at home because we didn’t have any way to record in a studio.” Catch Adam in Sheffield at the O2 Academy on the 12th. reviews by presley artist: Enrique Inglesias Single: I Like It release date: 12th July The most handsome bloke in pop………..probably. Julio’s son has done very well for himself over the past eight years or so. Whether this is down to his surname opening doors in the first place we will never know. But he has released some decent pop tunes over the years and he is extremely inoffensive. This brand new tune does go a bit too Europop for my liking however. Enrique’s voice is as good as ever but they have stuck autotune all over it to give it that odd effect that’s way overused at the moment. You don’t need to do vocal trickery in the producing stage of a song when you have a really good vocalist singing it in the first place, but it’s the trend at the moment and Enrique’s fallen into that trap sadly. This is extremely commercial throughout and even has a Lionel Richie ‘All Night Long’ sample in it. You know the “Party! Karamu! Fiesta! Forever” bit ………..just to make sure you like it in some form or another. The song, although horribly cheesy, is kind of all right and I quite like it???? You see what I mean………..their trickery has worked even on me!!!!

artist: Dandy Warhols album: Best of release date: 12th July The full title of this is actually ‘The Best of the Capitol Years 1995-2007”. A couple of years ago The Warhols decided to break from their label and go it on their own. Their fan base is probably big enough to keep success coming their way, but to not have a huge label like Capitol behind you has gotta hurt your sales. Then again, they’ll probably earn 7 or 8 times what they would have done on each new sale now. All that aside, for me The Dandy’s……… ……..I cant decide what to call ‘em? Are one of my favourite bands. So you’re not gonna get much criticism from me. This 15 track ‘best of’ gives us a plethora of great songs. The opener is ‘Boys Better’ from their ‘Come Down’ album, followed by ‘Everyday Should be a Holiday’ and the stunningly ironic ‘Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth’. This was the tune that really broke them in this country. ‘Godless’ follows, which is just gorgeously hypnotic (although it nicks George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’ riff…..ish?). Two amazingly catchy singles follow with ‘Get Off and their biggest hit to date ‘Bohemian like You’. Everybody knows this tune and it really sums up what the band is all about. Its coolness personified. Personally my favourite Dandy Warhols album is ‘Welcome to the

Monkeyhouse’. It was produced my Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and saw the band go a bit less indie jangly weedhead and a tad more electronic (but nothing at all like Duran). It’s a stunning album, in my Top 10 of all time, but it flopped and their hardcore fan base didn’t seem to warm to it too much. The band quickly reverted back to the tried and tested Warhol’s sound on the next album, of which ironically ‘Smoke It’ is on here.. But we do get four songs from that album, the highlight being ‘You Were the Last High’ one of the cleverest chorus’ ever written, its pure genius. We do get one brand new song called ‘This Is The Tide’ which could easily be from the ‘Come Down’ album, its fuzzed up guitars and vocals being a staple of this band. These guys always deserved more success than they’ve ever got, but now on their own label that’ll probably never happen but you should definitely check this cd out, there isn’t one weak track on it.

SUMMERSLAM WITH SUMMERLIN Say hello to snowballing faster than The Atari’s Chris Roe, SUMMERLIN; a group that's on a mission to put the party back into pop rock. The Doncaster/Leeds based 5 piece set out to carve their own niche with a unique blend of lighthearted power- pop. With their debut E.P, So Make Your Move out in July, the group aims to give the musical masses something to smile about. Summerlin’s Drew Lawson (vocals), Ben Jackson (guitar, vocals), Jake Greenwood (bass), Lee Whitaker (guitar) and Liam Broad (drums) met while their current bands were falling apart and were immediately bonded by their shared love of pop music and party. They began playing music together and in turn created Summerlin in Late 2008. Drawing on a wide range of influences, the group crafted an upbeat poprock sound, "We wanted to write love songs you could party too" With their fan base growing rapidly, attention on the band began to swirl after playing sold out shows across the UK with the likes of

Twenty Twenty, My PassionQuitedrive, Set Your Goals, Sherwood and Army of Freshman. 2010 seems to be the year for Summerlin. First they became one of the top 20 played unsigned acts on Myspace, followed by being asked to appear on BBC Radio One Annie&Nick Switch show where they were interviewed, recorded a jingle and they were tipped as one of the bands to look out for by Edith Bowman. With The release of their debut E.P an first UK headline tour July the buzz for this band is

they ever imagined. Checkout Summerlin on www.myspace.com/ summerlin with links to facebook&twitter

THIS WEEK IN CLUBLAND THE CLUBS HERO CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker

CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker

It’s been a beautiful week, and I chose to top up my tan on the river banks with a spot of fishing. Chatting to someone who recognised me, I was sad to hear that Dougie has retired from Eastwood Club (one of my favourite venues) after many successful years as Secretary. I have enjoyed a wonderful working relationship with him over the years, and will, like many, be sad to see him go. I’d like to wish him all the best for the future, and also wish his successor good luck in maintaining the club, as I would hate to see it follow other large venues into oblivion. We used to work Wednesdays on a Rotherham mini-circuit of Eastwood, Greasborough and the fantastic Titanic. Unfortunately the Titanic sold off some land for building, the new residents complained about the noise, and ironically the Council stopped acts performing even though the club was there long before the houses! So, the World Cup is almost over; Wimbledon has been and gone; and looking out of the window the sunshine seems to have finished. Let’s hope it reappears for the school holidays, and it would be great if some brave club decided to put on some outdoor entertainment evenings! Next week I will be showcasing another venue in the area.

What better way for me to start a new feature than by introducing you to my partner in 2Real, Glyn Davies. Many of you will know him as the former front man of the legendary “Men’s Club” but his time ib Clubland began many years before, at the age of nineteen. Given that he celebrates his fiftieth birthday this year, it means his career spans over thirty years! First up for Glyn was “Slack Alice” with Martin Burton, Mick Robson and Pete Johnson. After Mick and Pete left, Steve Kendal and Steve Chambers joined, and the lineup subsequently became the long-running “Gents.” With Glyn playing drums and adding the vocals to a variety of songs, the “Gents” went from strength to strength and

BUSINESS CORNER “There are two times you need to advertise, when sales are good and when sales are bad.” Not surprisingly, as a newspaper, we agree with this quote, considering we are in the advertising and marketing world. However, if you are a small business in these difficult times, then there are strong reasons for taking note of this message. Some key facts that might surprise you in this digital age; • 40 million people read a local newspaper every week • 73% of 15-24 year olds read a local newspaper only • Advertisers in local news papers are 77% more likely to be believed and trusted • Over 70% of people respond to advertising in their local newspaper

Research shows that advertising during challenging times creates significant brand loyalty; helps maintain sales during the storm and truly separates you from your competition. Research has demonstrated that consumers place more trust in businesses that advertise regularly. The past two years have been challenging for everyone, but key economic indicators and company earnings show signs of hope and a slow recovery. What are you doing to make 2010 a great year? Are you assessing your market and positioning yourself for growth as the market returns? Ask yourself… What do our customers think about our business? How do we generate awareness and does that result in sales enquiries? Do we get customers through

even recorded an album. Their fan base just grew and grew until in 1989 Martin decided to change direction and left to form “Lip Service”, whilst the remaining members brought in Julian Bury on bass and Bryn Abbott and changed their name to “Men’s Club.” Although they have seen a few different line ups they are sill pulling in the crowds but sadly after 21 years Steve and Glyn have announced that “Men’s Club” are to call it a day the end of March 2011. They will be sadly missed but Glyn is continuing to perform in “2Real” so he will still be a regular on stage in the clubs. Glyn also works in the office of IMA, one of the biggest agencies in the country. I asked him for his musical influences and was surprised when he said Kylie and Jason, as well as Squeeze, The Jam, Hue and Cry and the Cheeky Girls. He also enjoys tv work, and includes “Emmerdale,” “Heartbeat” and “Rita, Sue and Bob Too” amongst his credits. Asking him about the future, he is looking forward to the challenge of “2Real,” and will keep going until his body packs in! So look out for “2Real” and “Men’s Club” – their dates will be published in the Mercury, as always!

After Paul Walker’s nostalgic club report the other week I’d like to add my views on Clubland’s backing music. I’ve been in clubland for fifty years or more and i’ve frequented most clubs in the Rotherham/ Sheffield area. In the good old days all clubs had live backing, some good, some not so good. The best ever in my opinion being the four piece that could be found at The Arundel. These four ‘old gents’ as they were affectionally called were the tops, and they must have backed everyone in clubland at some point or another including some TV Stars in their time. They were actually an act themselves and must surely be written into clubland history. Secondly, having seen most organists and drummer, the good and the bad, I have to say that the best of the lost were Ken Dagnall on the organ and his longtime drumming sidekick Norman at the Handsworth Social Club. This man really could make the organ talk and every act in clubland wanted to work this regularly packed venue with these two. If for some reason an act didn’t turn up it didn’t really matter as the crowd was happy enough just to listen to the pair on their own. They were absolute magic. Sadly, all this has now gone and we are left with all these electronic gadgets that could make anyone sound good. Bring back the good old days!

A number of pubs in the S18 and S17 area are teaming up on Saturday 17th July for a festival of real ale and entertainment. Each pub will offer an expanded selection of cask conditioned beers, with some also offering traditional cider, food, music and other attractions. A free bus service is being laid on, running every hour between Dronfield railway station and all the eleven pubs, with festival goers able to hop on and off the bus

as they please to try the different beers and attractions each venue has to offer. Local breweries featured will include Thornbridge, Barlow, Abbeydale, Kelham Island, Peak Ales, Bradfield, Steel City Brewing and Oakwell Brewery. There will also be some interesting beers from further a field too. In the cider department, look out for Woodthorpe Hall cider, produced on a small scale in Holmesfield. The pubs have been encouraged

to put this event on by the local branch of the campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), who saw the idea as a good opportunity to not just have a party but to encourage people to see what the pubs in the local communities have to offer and try some different craft brewed real ales and good quality artisan ciders, rather than sitting at home in front of the telly drinking cheap, mass produced booze from the supermarket!

SLIMMERʼS RAISE MONEY FOR THE NSPCC Slimmer’s from ChildLine and the NSPCC “It’s called Body Magic Eckington walked and ran 3 miles each, a total of 51 miles around Rother Valley Country Park to raise money for the NSPCC. Members and their families of the Slimming World group in Eckington took part in the sponsored challenge to raise money for Slimming World’s very own charity SMILES (Slimmer’s Making It a Little Easier for Someone) which supports the NSPCC. Their efforts last Sunday (27th June) were part of the annual national event called Miles for SMILES, this event is held each year to raise awareness about the amazing benefits of getting active – great for boosting weight loss, increasing energy levels, reducing stress and building self-esteem. Between 21 June and 17 July, Slimming World is challenging members in its 6,500 groups across the UK to cover as many miles as possible. Participants can walk, run, cycle or swim the distance, or try something different. Last year one team line-danced for 40 miles! SMILES’ charity partner for 2010 is the NSPCC and all of the money raised in the UK from the event will go the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal to improve

Helpline. Slimming World Consultant Lynne Riley who runs the group in Eckington says: “Miles for SMILES is a great way to raise money for charity and get fitter. “We encourage members to get moving as part of Slimming World’s Body Magic programme. People are put off exercise because they think they have to wear Lycra or get all sweaty in a gym, but Slimming World encourages you to incorporate a regular, small amount of activity into your daily routine because we know it can make a huge difference. Everything from dancing, walking or swimming counts and even activities such as washing the car, walking the dog and gardening add up.

because combining activity with our Food Optimising healthy eating plan gives members the best results in the long run (excuse the pun!) It’s nothing short of magic! By doing just three or four sessions of moderate activity a week slimmer’s can boost their weight loss by around one to two pounds (lbs) a month – that’s 12lbs to 24lbs a year. Being active can also boost your mood, increase your energy levels, and reduce stress. As well as all that it brings many, many health benefits such as lower blood pressure, a reduced risk of cancer and type 2 diabetes, and stronger bones, joints and muscles,” adds Lynne. To find out more about my group you can contact me Lynne on 01246 435282

I’ve got another great offer from national retailer Bennetts of Sheffield exclusively for readers of ‘Angler’s Corner’. We all like to pick the latest cheap deals on tackle so Harry Peck has offered to mail out for a period of ONE YEAR, free of charge, each of the monthly tackle brochures to every reader who supplies their name and address quoting ‘mercury’. Contact the Bennetts team at the shop on Stanley Street in Sheffield, on the website at www.bosfish. co.uk or give them a ring on 01142756756. There are loads of fantastic deals to be had, so don’t miss out! More junior angler pictures this week to be considered for the ‘Nitro baits’ monthly prize. Offered by Mark Oakes from his tackle emporium in Parson Cross, this bait prize is certain to catch you more fish. Any angler under the age of 16 can submit a picture of a recent catch to be in with a chance of winning. Connor Sturch enclosed a couple of shots of his fish which have come from Chappletown and District AA waters. The club has been running waters around Chappletown, New Biggin and Westwood for more than 80 years and has recently invested a lot of money to get some of their staff ADB (Angling Trust) qualifications to allow professional coaching on their waters. For membership details, contact the secretary on 01142845424, Fancy some fun? Want to help a really good local cause? The best local angling website www.yorkshirefishing. net is once again organising a charity bash to raise some funds for Bluebell Wood’s Children’s Hospice. Based in North Anston, Sheffield, this hospice provides care and support to the families of children with life limiting conditions. As Bluebell receive no Government funding, these events are essential to the continuing operation, so the annual gathering sponsored by the site provides some extra money and a good day out for all. Aston Park Fishery will host the charity match on 16th August,

Poppleton Lakes just outside York has produced some stunning match results this week for Seacroft WMC anglers. Owner Roger rang to let me know that Wayne Westmoreland came in first with a weight of 205lbs 4ozs!!! Second up with a net of 131lbs 15ozs was K. Larkin and third place with 106lbs 4ozs went to S. Pearson. Understandably, Roger is extremely happy with the way his 6 lake venue is fishing so why not give him a call on 01904737279 to find out more? Prior to the match, Roger had promised the winner an extra £100 if the 200lb barrier was broken for the first time this year in a 6 hour match..........Ooops!! New Owners For Steelers? ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle

Last week a statement was issued on the Steelers website in an attempt to clear up stories released via other Sheffield media outlets. It revealed that Bob Phillips, owner and “Chairman” of the Steelers, is still fighting a legal claim of over five

years, which began following his purchase of the club from former owner Norton Lea. Following Phillips taking ownership of the club “creditors started to come forward in addition to undisclosed legal claims.” and Phillips was advised to liquidate the club’s operating company. “Some time later, Norton Lea instigated a claim over a £50,000 debt against the company that he lost as a result of the liquidation.” Phillips’ case reaches the courts in Cardiff later this week, a hearing which could see him forced to sell the Sheffield Steelers club as an asset. “Bob Phillips has suffered great personal loss and stress trying to protect the Club

World Cup Stars Fail to Shine

WORLD CUP by Neil Caldwell There seems to be only one consistent factor in the 2010 World Cup and that is that almost all of the players who were expected to have a major impact on the tournament have given disappointing performances. This is particularly true of the supposed top strikers in the world, many of whom have failed to score so far. Top of the list must be Lionel Messi. Barcelona’s iconic scoring machine failed to score against South Korea, Greece, Nigeria and Mexico. As a team player he was influential in some of these games, but when Argentina were demolished by four goals to nil by Germany he was all but anonymous throughout the game. Another South American who, pre tournament, was tipped to set the world on fire was Kaka. Brazil breezed past Portugal, The Ivory Coast, North Korea and Chile, however, he failed to score against any of them. The most notable thing he did in any of these games was to get sent off, albeit very harshly. He also failed to score against Holland in the quarter finals with the Dutch side coming from a goal down to expose the Samba Boys lack of defensive discipline at set pieces to win by two goals to one. In another of the quarter finals Uruguay squeezed past the unlucky team from Ghana. Throughout the game Ghana had looked to be the side with the greater ambition. With the last kick of the match Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty after Uruguayan striker Suarez had handled on the line. The Uruguayan side held their nerve to edge out the last African team in the tournament when the game was decided by a penalty shoot out. In a last sixteen game against Spain, with Fernando Torres, were matched against Christian Ronaldo’s Portugal. Ronaldo has at least managed to score one goal, but this was in a 7-0 demolition of North Korea and even then the goal was somewhat fortunate when the ball fell to his feet after hitting him on

the back. Against Spain he had minimal influence on a game that the Spaniards won 1-0. Spain went on to play Paraguay in the quarter finals and won 1-0, but once again Torres failed to score. Torres was brought on as a 60th minute substitute in Spain’s opening game against Switzerland. In all four games he has played in since this he has appeared in the starting eleven, but has been substituted in the second half after putting in very disappointing displays. He still has the chance to redeem himself if selected to play in the semi final against Germany, and in the final if the Spanish get past the Germans. France’s Thierry Henry failed to score and they were dumped out of the World Cup without progressing beyond the group stages. Didier Drogba came into the World Cup with an injury. He did manage to score a goal in a group stage, against very difficult opponents, before ultimately his team, the Ivory Coast, also failed to progress beyond the group stages. Wayne who? The only striker who big things were expected of that is likely to exit the World Cup with his reputation intact or even enhanced is Spain’s David Villa. He has been excellent throughout, scoring four goals and his enterprising attacking play could have increased this tally were he to have enjoyed better fortune. Without him it is doubtful that Spain would have progressed to the semis. Two strikers who weren’t even considered as pre tournament favourites to win the Golden Boot are Germany’s Thomas Mueller and Miroslav Klose. Neither of them have had good seasons at club level and their team were regarded as no hopers before the tournament started. Yet, before the semis, both were amongst the players sharing number one spot for top goal scorer. Don’t write either of them off for finishing as Golden Boot winners, they like Germany are, as usual, quite likely to come from nowhere to take the prizes on offer.

WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE

WEEKLY FANS COLUMN by Jon Warburton The formalities have been concluded, the date has been set and the wait is now on for a clash between two titans of the world football stage. Sheffield United will host Argentinean giants Estudiantes, managed by former Blades midfielder Alex Sabella, for a pre-season friendly on Sunday, August 1. You could say that this is the next long overdue chapter in the Blades’ flirtations with Argentinean football. Back in 1978, then Sheffield United manager Harry Haslam made a foray into the Argentinean market to add some flair and trickery to his hardworking side. He returned with two nippy attackers, one Alex Sabella but also Pedro Verde, who went on to be the uncle of the rather more famous Juan Sebastian Veron. The former Manchester United and Inter Milan midfielder was quoted when he first came to England as saying that as a youngster it had been his dream to play for United, but the one in Sheffield. As he currently plies his trade with Estudiantes, it appears that he will achieve his lifelong ambition of turning out at Bramall Lane. As if the story couldn’t turn ever more surreal, it does. Reports widely suggest that when Harry Haslam went to Argentina back in 1978 he actually had his eye on another tricky 17 year old that was turning heads. Apparently he could have bagged the youngster for £200,000, but the Sheffield United board at the time wouldn’t part with the extra cash, and instead signed young Alex Sabella for the lesser fee of £160,000. You would have thought that an extra £40,000 to secure the services of Diego Maradona would have seemed like good business. It just goes to show things never change at the Lane. But who knows what this next chapter might bring. Will Veron refuse to go home with the Argentineans after realising just how much it means to him to pull on the hallowed red and white of Sheffield United Football Club?

Mellor in the mood LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday’s latest recruit Neil Mellor is itching to get started as he embarks on his season-long loan stay at Hillsborough. Mellor joined the Owls from parent club Preston on Friday and less than a day later was jetting out to Austria to the squad’s preseason training camp. Three daily sessions of high intensity training will ensure the players return to S6 in top condition ahead of what will be a gruelling campaign in League One. And striker Mellor is desperate to get started. He said: “I’m very excited to be here. It was a long time trying to sort out a deal but it’s done now and I can’t wait to get started. The size of this football club was a major factor for me coming here. I’ve played at Hillsborough in the past and the fans have always been superb. “So I’m hoping for a successful season. If we can perform well on the pitch, I’m sure the fans will support us with big crowds. I’m dropping down to League One but it doesn’t bother me that much because this is Sheffield Wednesday. Alan Irvine and the size of Sheffield Wednesday were the two main attractions.” The Sheffield-born hitman is refusing to set goal targets for the 2010/11 season but is open with two key aims - to have a significant impact in the final third and helping the Owls bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking. Mellor added: “ It’s going to be a tough season but an exciting one and hopefully I can prove myself again. Although I’ve scored goals in the Championship and when I was in the Premier League, I want a really good season here and in League One I am hoping I can do that. “We know what lies ahead but the manager has assembled a really good squad with plenty of ability to get the promotion we need.”

Steve is delighted to be back

LoCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk After a summer of speculation, Steve Simonsen has broken his silence to reveal that the Blades were always his favoured option, particularly after seeing how the new squad is being put together. The 31-year-old goalkeeper, speaking after signing a two-year contract with United, quickly agreed terms after securing his release from Stoke City: “I had a clause in my contract that allowed me to move on if I got the right offer and I activated that clause on Wednesday. Thankfully, Stoke did everything they could to help. “I knew of United’s interest when Paddy Kenny left but there wasn’t much we could do about it until July came around and, thankfully, it has all happened so quickly,” said a delighted Simonsen. He becomes the fourth experienced player to arrive at the Lane during the summer, giving him every incentive to return to a much stronger and potentially more consistent outfit. “This was my first choice, I know what the place is about and enjoyed it last season. It is a great club and I see no reason why the team can’t improve on last season, after all, it is shaping up to be a well-balanced and settled squad with a heck of a lot of knowledge about the Championship. “I have come to a club where I’m going to be playing football and it is an added bonus that it’s at a club that has a real chance of promotion.

Owls fans snap up Grimsby tickets LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk

Eager Wednesdayites snapped up the free allocation of tickets for the pre-season friendly at Grimsby in less than an hour on Saturday. The Mariners host the Owls on 17 July and pledged to allow season ticket holders free entry into the game. Wednesday were allocated the equivalent number free of charge and those tickets were issued in the Owls Megastore at the weekend - they promptly went

35

inside an hour as Wednesdayites queued from 6.45am. A further 166 were sold on top of the free tickets, giving the visitors a total of 666 at Blundell Park so far. So be a devil and join the preseason party by the sea! Wednesday have been allocated 1,000 tickets in total for the Cleethorpes clash, with the option of more if requested. In the bigger picture, anticipation is building for the 2010/11 campaign and to underline the point, the Owls are now just 33 season tickets short of breaking through the 11,000 barrier - thank you for your magnificent support.

The price has to be right

and capable of challenging for promotion. “Recruiting the players you want depends on many things, not least your targets wanting to come to your club but we are lucky in that respect because generally they do want to come to Sheffield United because in recent years we have always been in contention. “There have been loads of names thrown at me - some accurate, some not - and we have looked at everybody but we will be careful with our wheeling and dealing. “We have to be clever and I believe we have with those we have brought in so far, but there are a lot of players out there who are still holding out for better deals that in many cases just won’t come. “Some still don’t seem to understand that the wages they are asking for are unrealistic now - and I think they might be left high and dry by the time the season starts unless they get in step with what clubs can afford.”

WALTON COMPLETES LOAN DEAL

Road but he does seem to have lost his way a little bit. He and Aaron Lennon were going to be the next big thing in English football and I have brought him here to try and help him catch up a bit. “His arrival helps us put together a squad we can work with because he can play midfield or in defence. Last season we often got caught out when injuries occurred and we had to use far too many loans. “With Walton and Ertl both able to play in a couple of positions we have more flexibility and can just dip into the loan market when we need to.” Plymouth have a potential recall clause in January, if they receive an offer for the player but United have an option to match any bid.

LoCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Kevin Blackwell has warned that players looking for moves this summer might be left on the shelf unless they adjust their wage demands in line with the economic climate. Although transfer fees have dramatically fallen in recent years clubs are becoming more reluctant to commit themselves to expensive, lengthy contracts that could put their finances in jeopardy: The United boss has so far managed to bring in four experienced players in Leon Britton, Daniel Bogdanovich, Johnny Ertl and Steve Simonsen, and insists that building a squad must not put the Club’s future at risk: “We will remain prudent but that doesn’t stop us trying to put together a squad that is affordable

The Blades have added 22 year old Simon Walton to their squad after securing the Plymouth Argyle utility man on a season long loan. With over 100 league appearances to his name Walton brings height and authority to the Lane and raises Kevin Blackwell’s summer total of additions to five following the arrival of Leon Britton, Johnny Ertl, Daniel Bogdanovic and Steve Simonsen. Having made his debut for Leeds whilst still only 16 Walton seemed set to be a rising star and the United boss believes that he can help Walton resurrect his career: “Obviously, I had him at Elland “Obviously I heard about ‘Morgs’ and ‘Monty’ renewing their deals, and Richard Cresswell agreeing to lengthen his contract. “They are valuable players for any club and keeping them erases a lot of question marks. And the arrival of Leon Britton, Daniel Bogdanovic and Johnny Ertl should have given everyone a boost because they are well-regarded additions.” Simonsen played seven games during his loan spell at Bramall Lane last season, culminating in a solid and assured performance in the Steel City derby at Hillsborough in April. “I’ve won promotion from the Championship before and other lads here have done the same so we have good experience. “It is a tough league to get out of but, maybe, this is one of the best years to try and win promotion. There were two strong teams last season and they are out of it now, whilst the three to come down

have got their various problems which opens the door for others. “The red and white half of this city is fanatical about their football. They were gutted about not reaching the play-offs last season but there were problems and this season will hopefully be a lot smoother. “We’ve got a very good squad coming into place and at the very least we are looking at the play-offs.”

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally Dates for your Diary

Your Centre, Your Views Over the summer months, The City Council will be asking Sheffield residents and businesses to help develop plans to create thriving district and local centres (TDLC), across the whole of the city. Centres are an important part of everyday life – they often include public spaces, libraries, schools, community buildings and health centres. They also support local businesses, including places to eat and drink, and offices and workshops. Attractive, successful centres are one of the reasons why people choose to live or work in an area. They also contribute to the success of the city as a whole. We want every community to have an attractive and thriving centre – a place where you can live, work, shop, meet and relax. We would like to hear your views on the district and local centres that you use in Sheffield - which centres you think are most important and what improvements are most needed. Look out for the TDLC team at the upcoming Sheffield 50 + event at the Quaker meeting house and come and tell us what you think and give us your ideas. This is your chance to contribute to the developing strategy for Centres across the City. If you can’t attend an event but still want to give your views you can go to our website at www.sheffield.gov.uk/thrivingcentres and complete the on-line questionnaire. For more information please contact Fiona Champion or Elaine Feeney at the North Sheffield Regeneration Team on 0114 203 9568.

South Rotherham Fun Safety Day and Sheffield Bus for over 50s On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 27, Vision 28 and 29 September a fun safety day is The South Rotherham and Sheffield Bus Vision is being developed by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and with Sheffield City Council and we would like to hear views from local residents, businesses and the travelling public about our specific proposals. Our main aim is to improve access to jobs, schools, hospitals and leisure activities to cope with the growing demand created by future investment and new job opportunities. Our plans also include introducing a simplified ‘smartcard’ fare system across the network. These new developments will enable bus services to run across South Rotherham and Sheffield more efficiently, making bus travel a much more attractive, accessible and more enjoyable experience for everyone. We want to ensure that we get these measures right, and would like to give you the opportunity to read this information and provide your feedback – visit the SYPTE stall at Sheffield 50+’s event.

taking place at the Lifewise Centre in the Grounds of Magna for over 50s in Sheffield. There is free transport from Sheffield City Centre and back, free refreshments and lunch plus a free raffle. The day will start at 10.00 am for a 10.30 am start and finish by 3.00 pm. The aim of the day is to make life for older people living in Sheffield safer and give practical advice and information on safety issues. Would you like to join us? If so please ring 0114 2735426 – booking essential. One visitor last year wrote “In September we joined a group at the Crucial Crew event in Rotherham. We were taken by coach from Sheffield to the purpose-built facility alongside the Magna museum, which is run by S.Y. Police. We spent the day being shown how to keep ourselves safe in many areas of our lives – in the kitchen, on the road, at the cash point, in the park and at home where most accidents happen. There were lots of stalls giving advice and help. After lunch we watched a scenario around doorstep safety and the necessity to keep the chain on the door and to be careful of distraction
