CELEBRATIONS ALL ROUND FOR TWO YEARS TO GO
Sheffielders can enjoy a ‘ring’ side seat this weekend to celebrate two years to go to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Hoola hoop and circus skills demonstrations, Sheffield‘s very own Olympic torch bearers and a mass play by musicians are just some of the fun events planned in Sheffield for the Open Weekend, Friday July 23 to Sunday July 25. In the City Centre on Friday and Saturday street entertainers will entertain shoppers with juggling, plate spinning, the tightwire, stilts and more. Five ‘Sheffield Olympians’
- metallic performers who are each the colour of one of the Olympic rings - will make a special procession through the city centre on Saturday. And on Sunday performance artist Madam Mango will be demonstrating her skills with hoola hoops in the Winter Garden, including an amazing five Olympic rings trick. Young people in the Concord Youth Music and Performance Organisation will take part in a mass play by 2,012 musicians from across the country on Saturday at 11.30am. Swimmers can take part in a challenge to swim 2,012 metres in any of
the city’s swimming pools and special exercise classes and sports days organised for the Weekend are open to all. Cllr Roger Davison, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism from Sheffield City Council said: “That’s just a taste of what’s happening at the Open Weekend in Sheffield. It is a great opportunity to celebrate now the fact that the Olympics and Paralympics are coming to London in just two years time. Join in the excitement by going along to any of these fantastic events, whether that’s having a go with hoola hoops,

COPLEYʼS COLUMN It was perhaps fitting that a South African, Louis Oosthuizen, should win the Golf Open Championship on the ninety second birthday of the wonderful Nelson Mandella. who has been in jail for twenty seven years, so he is in effect only sixty five. Record crowds were treated to a superb exhibition of golf from Oosthuizen, a two hundred to one outsider. My money was on Lee Westwood, second but at least my bet was each way. I did feel sorry for young Rory McIlroy, who had a disastrous second round after a record breaking nine under par. The inclement weather, rain and strong winds, made play very difficult. Indeed, play was held up for an hour as the strong winds were blowing the golf balls off the green. It was nice to see that five times champion, Tom Watson, along with the legendary Arnold Palmer and Padraig Harrington were given honorary doctorates of law by St. Andrews University. I desperately wanted ‘Doctor’ Watson to survive the half way cut, when we could have had a pairing of J.B.Holmes and himself. Holmes and Doctor Watson would have made a dream headline.Tom Watson is a very popular golfer from the USA, and he received an emotional farewell from the crowd at St.Andrews as he walked up the eighteenth fairway for the last time. It may well not be his last Open, as although he is sixty years of age, he can still play a bit, but as the championship will not be held at St. Andrews for another five years, it was the last appearance at the home of golf.
Last week was officially ‘daughter’s week’ I don’t know who is responsible for this but little happened of note. I should, however, like to record that my daughter Rosanne, has never been any trouble for me, has been successful at work, lives in a beautiful house, and has been someone of whom I am very proud.. Thank you for that my dear, your dad loves you very much. Socially, I have had three great nights out this week. On Tuesday night, I attended Russ Dennett’s open mike night at the White Swan in Dronfield, which never fails to be a fantastic night. I returned to the White Swan on Thursday night, where Russ Dennett and Andy Birks presented an acoustic night. This was marvellous, with these two very talented lads combining well for a great chill out evening. Saturday night took us to the Forest Showbar, Rutland Road, where a great night is guaranteed. Mine hosts Norman Bottom and top local entertainer, Gary Phillips are always very hospitable and we had a most enjoyable evening. Two of the regulars, Gary and Bridget, despite looking no older than forty years old were celebrating their thirtieth wedding anniversary. Both are obviously still very much in love with each other, with Gary looking forward to the next thirty years. They have been infinitely more successful than I have, as I cannot reach thirty years if I add all my marriages together. The benefit night for Glen Dale, to be held at Wadsley Working Men’s Club has now been finalised, and

The evening will be compered by Sheffield’s best all round entertainer, Gary Phillips, and Paul Shane and Lance Edwards will be in attendance. Artistes who have confirmed are in no particular order, Cassie Kennedy, Diana Edwards (Agnetha from international Abba tribute Bjorn Again) Robin Good, top local band Junkyard Dog, Glen himself and his two sons, Dave Lee and Lee Johns, both brilliant singers in their own right. Ticket details will be made known in this column next week, when I shall be happily relaxing on Majorca. This is the time of year when the annual school reports are out. Jack Bromley, the nine year old son of my partner Caron receives a twenty pound note and a mention in this column as reward for a good report. I am more than happy to keep my promise as this year, like last year, he has performed admirably, and he fills me with much pride. Education is so important, and I will always be there to help and encourage him throughout his schooldays. This country, at present, has to endure a period of austerity to put right the financial mess created by the last government. My memories of Gordon Brown, shouting off at prime ministers question time about how good was the state of the economy really makes my blood boil. I have consistently warned over the last ten years of the inadvisability of voting these incompetents into power. Perhaps now that the full extent of their total inadequacy and inability to govern has come to lght, the warnings will now be heeded.
Dancing legend Michael Flatley will tap his way back onto the world stage as he reprises his role as Lord of the Dance. For a limited run commencing in autumn, 2010, Lord of the Dance starring Michael Flatley will play in venues throughout the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including Sheffield Arena on Saturday 30th October. Tickets priced £75, £49.50 & £35 (subject to booking fee) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 23rd April. Flatley said, “I am very excited to dance again”. I’ve created many shows but Lord of the Dance has a special place in my heart and I haven’t performed in it since 1998.” For 14 years Lord of the Dance has captivated audiences around the world, playing to over 60 million people in over 60 countries in every continent. Michael will be joined by a 40 strong cast, some of whom performed originally with Michael when the show debuted in 1996. It is a phenomenal show and Flatley’s return to it has been hugely anticipated. He just completed a successful tour of Taiwan with ‘Feet of Flames’ that exceeded box office
expectations and had audiences begging for more even after five standing ovations. Michael Flatley was catapulted into stardom when he created, choreographed and produced Lord of the Dance after realising his lifelong dream of taking Irish Dance to another level by creating a spectacle that would break box office records in arenas and stadiums worldwide. Lord of the Dance is a timeless story based on Irish folklore of good versus evil, and through the media of dance and music it is understood and appreciated by every culture; there is no language barrier. Dance has never been more popular and Michael¹s return to the stage promises not to disappoint. “It will be different this time around” remarks Michael, “I¹ve achieved my success and I’m proud of what I’ve done, this is like a victory lap. This time is for my loyal fans who have been there from the beginning.” Tickets priced at £75, £49.50 and £35 (subject to booking fee) go on sale at 9am on Friday 23rd April in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at ww.sheffieldarena.co.uk or www.arenaticketshop.co.uk

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW Artist: The Drums Kt Evans and Annie Darling
Who would have thought...emerging from the heavy electro, indie orchestrated modern music industry, New York’s very own answer to the Beach Boys, The Drums (Jonathan Pierce, Vocals, Jacob Graham, Guitar, Adam Kessler, Guitar, Connor Hanwick, Drums) have demonstrated their nonconformist nature by shining a relatively unexplored retro light onto the British music scene. Their ‘vulnerably sad melodies’ don’t deter from the fact that the four-piece have quickly marked this vintage-pop niche as their own, so it deemed a necessity that we caught up with front man Jonny, regarding teenage cravings, British festivals and best friends. You’ve seen them running along the beach in their hit video ‘Let’s Go Surfing,’ now the UK’s festival circuit will host the race track for The Drums this summer. Having played only small-time British festivals in Wales and Glasgow, it certainly came as a shock to the Brooklyn born quartet when approached to grace the stage at Reading and Leeds this year. ‘We’ve only played at really small festivals, not big ones like Glastonbury. We really didn’t think we’d be doing this, we’ve only been playing for a year or so and we’re really excited.’ The Drums will be performing their ‘beach boys-esque’ live set on Saturday 28th August, on the NME/Radio 1 stage at Leeds Festival, something which Jonny described as ‘a whole world, which is so new to us.’ Before the formation of The Drums in late 2008, none of the band members had ever set foot on British territory, always having stayed in America. ‘Before the band, we’d never been to the UK. Festivals in the US aren’t as big, so playing in England is something we’re psyched about.’
THE NEW FJORD FOCUS!
With their unique progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the seventies as the most successful and the most appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. (Oh yes! And you thought ABBA are the only Dutch pop export). The band were fronted by the much admired duo of Thijs van Leer on the Hammond organ/flute and Jan Akkerman on the guitar. Their hit potential came in the form of a couple of instrumentals, “Hocus Pocus”, “House of the King”, and “Sylvia”, but we shouldn’t forget their timeless albums “Moving Waves”, “Focus 3” and “Hamburger Concerto”. But like all good things, it couldn’t last and internal wrangling ended this legendary group. After an initial careful comeback which resulted in a well-received album “Focus 8”, the band are now back on the frontline, with a fantastic line-up! Of course the founder member and musical genius Thijs van Leer is still holding the fort. Also back in his old spot is Pierre van der Linden, the drummer who is internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, and who was and still is a defining factor in the whole Focus sound. Together with Bobby Jacobs who stems from a well acclaimed Dutch musical family, they are responsible for the rhythm section and that unmistakable Focus groove. The talented Niels van der Steenhoven, who without any shadow of a doubt can hit the mark when it comes to the guitar, completes the band’s line-up. A new Focus era has arrived. There is a rejuvenated passion in the new compositions, that adorn the new album “Focus 9 / New Skin”, which has been released on the famous Red Bullet label of Willem van Kooten. This album -and the following gigs- will surprise the loyal fans. They will hear once again all the classic Focus tunes and they will be surprised at the strength and depth of the new material. “Our music is evolution, not revolution”; Thijs van Leer once said about the music of Focus. Well now, the evolution is at full pace. In May 2010 Nike included “Hocus Pocus” as the main theme tune
The band’s self-titled début album was released shortly after ‘Summertime EP’ in late 2009, both of which took eight months to write and record. ‘We finished recording in our bedroom. The songs just flowed really fast, so much so that we had no time to labour over anything. A good pop song should come naturally.’ Musically flawless, the album combines bitter-sweet lyrics alongside a laid back, absent attitude, all of which contributes to the perfect summer anthem. Nevertheless, that is not to say the journey to the top has not been easy for the group, who originally could not play the guitar let alone afford one. ‘We didn’t know what we were doing when we created the album. There were lots of limitations, but we had such a strong vision that our selfishness enabled us to succeed.’ With an array of likeable tracks on the album, Jonny tells us ‘Best Friends is my favourite, because it was the first song we wrote. It means a lot to me. Having said this, Book Of Stories sums up what The Drums are and what we want to be.’ However, it seems The Drums are equally about the image as they are the music. It is clear through live performances that showcasing the bands pretentiously quirky style has heavily aided the musicians’ success. Albeit, Jonny tells us that they have never felt that they had to fit into a certain stereotype. ‘We’ve never thought about whether we were considered indie or commercial or anything else. We’d prefer to write good songs to be heard by small crowds, rather than bad songs for large crowds.’ With regards to the bands influences, Jonny explains a range of different genres, including ‘early electro,’ have each played a part in establishing The Drums sound. ‘John Foxx and The Whig have all contributed. I fell in love with music when I first listened to The Smiths as a lonely sixteen year old boy, who in their extended FIFA World Cup commercial. This has created renewed interest and acclaim on the many Internet sites that link to the Nike advert, and rekindled an interest in the band itself. wanted to find music to satisfy his cravings. One thing these bands all have in common is that they aren’t afraid to write beautiful pop songs, with vulnerably sad melodies. This is something I can really appreciate.’ It’s hard not to have a level of respect for The Drums, whose confidence has not yet been shattered by that of harsh publicity. ‘We’ve learnt not to read reviews. Its not good as they effect us, whether it be negative or positive in the studio. We don’t want to get big heads or feel rejected, we’ve leant to put down the blinds and focus on our vision.’ Jonny explains the group are ‘a gang of control freaks’ who mix, produce and write their own songs and videos. ‘We’re so busy touring and will be every day for the next two years, that we don’t have time to think or care about what people say.’ Thus, it could be argued that they’ve had to rapidly grow a thick skin. However, having being critically acclaimed by the likes of NME and the BBC Sounds of 2010 Poll, it’s a wonder there isn’t more pressure on the band to live up to such high expectations. ‘We barely knew what the BBC was, we had to have it explained to us so we knew how significant it all is. I’m sure it had a big part to play, it was so surreal and unexpected.’ Jonny goes on to explain that The Drums are different to other bands and the pressures of the press was eased due to self belief and personal goals. ‘Our goal was to simply create songs we love. I believe we’ve already done that. We’ve gone beyond anything we were ever dreaming of, everything else that happens to us is just a bonus. We’re really thankful for everything that’s happened, but we’ve already achieved our goal. People can love you today and can hate you tomorrow.’
WHITE LINES!
It’s the tramlines music festival in Sheffield all week, that means you can scour the city for just about any taste in music that takes your fancy from metal to indie, hip hop to bhangra! Just about all the major venues will have live music shows absolutely free all week and all the pub venues will be creaking with the plethora of live bands jostling for your attention, “go get ‘em baby!” Tramlines is put on by Sheffield’s music community – with the enthusiastic support of the city council. Their aim is to let each venue, promoter and musician, express themselves and showcase what they do best. The whole festival is free. There is music and entertainment everywhere. The organisers say why not experiment a bit? Wander into a venue you’ve never visited before. See someone you’ve never heard of. Do something you wouldn’t normally do. You have nothing to lose. This year, the book-

with the title “Death”. And the song was the last song The Rev wrote for the album, and when he handed it in, he said, that’s it, that’s the last song for this record. And then 3 days later, he died” So what do we have here? Well the self titled single ‘Nightmare’ bizarrely sounds like Queen on the opening……….great! It’s the guitars I think. Then a great rock vocal and rock sound come in, one line is pure rock, the second line is more metal, then the chorus is more melodic. I like this idea, haven’t really heard it since the band Filter did it many years ago. The Queen guitars make more appearances I’m happy to say. The album follows a similar path, standout tunes are definitely ‘Danger Line’ ‘God Hates Us’ and the outstanding ‘Save Me’. “And what about the drumming” I hear you ask, well The Rev did almost all of it but Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater (a major influence on The Rev and the rest of the band) agreed to finish recording the drumming tracks for the album. I personally cannot tell which is him and which is The Rev, they’re all brilliant, powerful, punchy and heavy. If you like your rock music with b*ll**ks then this is the album for you.

performance, then you might as well listen to the album at home surely? But alas, no. No performance whatsoever. Well maybe the songs and the musicianship will be so outstanding that it’ll compensate for all that is lacking. But again, alas no. Anyway, benefit of the doubt and all that, maybe this album will change my view of that depressing day out. The answer, yep you guessed it…alas no. This is so painfully dull it’s hard to put into words. Its overly insipid, extremely drab music. Could they be the most boring band on the planet…alas yes.
They hail from the sunny state of California…………yep, where they have real sun! I digress, this is their fifth album. It seems only yesterday they were upon us though? They’ve never really made it huge over here but they’re well enough known to sell out the 02 Academy’s of this country fairly easily. Recently they’ve moved from a metal kinda sound to a more rock sound, not totally mainstream though, they’ll always have that extra bit of noise to help your ears bleed. Late last year they lost an important element of the band. On December 28, 2009, drummer James “The Rev” Sullivan was found dead at his home at the age of 28. Autopsy results were inconclusive, but on June 9, 2010, the cause of death was revealed to have been an “acute polydrug intoxication due to combined effects of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/ Nordiazepam and ethanol”………blimey. It’s strange though isn’t it, as with Michael Jackson and many other musicians, actors, artists and now doubt god knows how many of the general public, it’s the legal drugs that seem to be worst killer, not the street drugs? I’m not sure what that says about our society, but it’s just not right somehow. Very recently the band put out this statement about the upcoming album, obviously without James. “The new album, Nightmare, is dedicated to The Rev memory and although it’s not exactly a concept album, it does centre around The Rev. The eeriest thing about it is there is a song on the album called “Fiction” (a nickname The Rev gave himself) which started out
I first saw this band at a UK Festival a few years ago, which one exactly escapes me. I think that’s because when I saw and heard this band my brain, since then, has tried to erase them and said festival from my memory. No offence to them, but they don’t really look like a Rock ‘n’ Roll band, but maybe they could perform a little on-stage? I mean, if they don’t make a live show a
ing team have excelled themselves. There’s great headliners, a mind blowing roster of local artists, and some really quirky treats at over 50 venues around town. With so much interest in Tramlines, they’re expecting thousands to turn up for the party. There’ll be times when some arenas or venues will be full. At these times, they will need your co-operation. They ask that people show the festival and fellow revellers as much respect as they can, keep smiling, queue nicely and leave your rubbish in the bins. (Yeah I second that!). So get out there and support live music and you never know you may just discover the next big thing.

YOUR WEEKLY
HOROSCOPES Aries (Mar21/Apr20) You might get together with friends and relatives to work through new plans and ideas for the future. This is a great time to investigate a possible change of address, employment or lifestyle. Taurus (Apr21/May21) Where family and other close relationships are concerned there’s an atmosphere of total tranquillity that will help all the tensions and strain of the past few weeks to drain away. Gemini (May22/June21) If you’ve been entertaining live in guests, their departure means you at last have the place to yourself again. Time that has slipped away with friends and family can be made up now. This means an uninterrupted period of sheer hard work but it will be worth it once you get on top of it all. Cancer (June22/July23) There is always a way to change things if you really want to. Even if it means taking a chance or two, this would be better than remaining in a situation that makes you miserable. Leo (July24/Aug23) If you spot an opportunity that other people seem to have overlooked don’t be too quick to point them out. Look after your own interests first and foremost before spreading the news to all and sundry. Virgo (Aug24/Sept23) A happy and light hearted aura surrounds you now. You aren’t so fixated on getting some jobs out of the way and there’s more time to sit back and re-evaluate your recent successes. Libra (Sept24/Oct23) An intellectual friend or relative seems to be deliberately twisting their words to put you off their trail. If they are either talking in riddles or being economical with the truth, you aren’t going to get any sense from them. To play them at their own game you need to get advice from an independent third party. Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) Teaming up with an active person will help you get through an amazing amount of work. Spending more time in the company of someone you’ve not worked with before helps you get to know each other better. Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Even people in high places have been known to fall short of perfection. Someone in power seems to have come to work and left their brain at home this week. One way to make your own position more secure is to be there to catch them every time they take a tumble. Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) Arranging a journey for business or pleasure should be a lot easier than it was perhaps a few weeks ago. If you’re half of a loving twosome your partner will be less resistant to your ideas. In your work, you will do well if you use your imagination. Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) If someone close has been acting strangely recently keep a close eye on their mood swings. They might expect you to be indifferent to their emotional needs and you are about to prove otherwise. Go out of your way to introduce a lighter note to your life and relationships. Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) Friends want to spend as much time with you as they can so expect to be in demand socially. A housemate who isn’t always the easiest person to live with seems to be going out of their way to please you now leading you to wonder what they’re up to. Ideas for the start of September might take you by surprise. Don’t look for reasons why you can’t join in. Throw yourself into spur of the moment happenings with enthusiasm.

A LETTER OF THANKS CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker
A few thank yous to give out this week. I’d like to thank all the people who have been in touch over me packing in the Meatloaf act - thank you for your support. I’d also like to thank the people who made my first Sunday of three at The Plough a success. We had a cracking night, a few surprises were to be had with the fantastic Mick 1,2,3,4, 5, and 6 giving us brill renditions of popular songs. Also Lenny called in to sing a few songs and reminded me of a fabulous jam night he is involved with on a Monday night at the Kimberworth Park pub in Rotherham. Brian French even got up for a few songs and I am pleased to report that he has still got it. A young man with a tremendous voice called Andy (I don’t mean his voice is called Andy) gave us a great range. A young man called Steve and
his lovely other half Lynn gave us some fabulous harmony numbers, including a couple of Elvis and Lady Ga Ga songs. Alan did his bit with some Dean Martin and Alison treated us to Cher. Karen (my darling) tried something new with a fab version of ‘Angel’ by Sarah McCallam and I cannot forget Steve with his brilliant rendition of ‘Human’. Thanks guys it was a ball and here’s to next week. I previously mentioned Steve and Lynn. Now I haven’t seen them for a good few years and I was really impressed on how well they work together. They will, I’m sure, be appearing at a club near you very soon. They go by the name ‘Extra Mile’, so look out for them! I will be featuring them in the artist feature in a couple of months time. If you fancy a Sunday night out join me at The Plough in Wingfield, Rotherham for the next two Sundays. Another couple of events to tell you about this week. Firstly, on Wednesday night I’m coming out of retirement to do a jam night at the Sand Hill Tavern for my mate Yorkie’s birthday. Now if you don’t know Mr Darren York then believe me you don’t want to! lol! Only joking, he’s
one in a million and he will be my featured Clubland hero for August. Another day to tell you about is this Saturday, there is an all day charity event happening at The Star pub at Rawmarsh, Rotherham. There are two stages, one inside and one out. There are bands on stage from about 12 O’Clock untill late and all the proceeds raised are for Bluebell Wood and in memory of Rob, a young lad from Rawmarsh who was taken early from his family after a terrible car accident.
CLUBLAND ACTIVITIES CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker I saw an interesting thing this week, I don’t know if this would work in every club but I was told by a friend that a club he performed in last week, instead of playing bingo, played a similar game but they used 13 cards. Now I don’t know if anyone out there has come across this game? I have but not for a few years. You buy 13 cards already selected at random. The caller (who has a full deck) shouts out cards from this deck and if you have the card called then you remove it from your hand. The first person to get all their cards out wins. Now this seems very popular in the venues that I have been to and it makes a great alternative to bingo. I’m interested in different activities that clubs try, if you do come across something different in a club you visit then please let me know. I would love to publish the activities details and give people the opportunity to try it for themselves. Next week I will be introducing you to another agency and telling you a bit of background about them. Also don’t forget if you have an event going off and think we should know about it then drop me a line at the Mercury office. If I can get along to do a review I’ll publish a report on these very pages. I remember long ago that there was a TV programme called ‘What are they doing now?’ and I was wondering if you the readers would help me track down some of your bands from the past. Between us we may be able to find out what they are doing now. I’d like to start it off with a easy one but the 1st band I ever saw was ‘The Internationals’. Now we know that Neil Tomlinson has the Was/is agency but what of the other lads? Are they still in the business or turned to pastures new? It will be interesting to find out and I think what would be fab is if we can get some ‘then and now’ pictures. I will leave that with you and if you had a favourite band or act let me know and I will do my best to find out what they are up to. Thanks to the people who have given me lovely comments about the clubscene bit and watch out the tenners in the post, lol. See you next week. Hope the sun comes out and stays for a bit. Regards Paul x
SEARCH FOR A STAR 2010 They say that live entertainment is a dying art. Try telling that the to the people supporting Search For A Star 2010 at the Pacific Lounge Bar in Chesterfield. This year’s competition is in full swing and is already proving a hit. “Every year the aim is to make it a bigger and better competition and this year the quality of singers is higher than ever before”, said Chris Heathcote, the event organiser. “Search For A Star’ is now in its 4th year and has become the biggest and best singing competition in Chesterfield offering a prize fund of £3,000 to this year’s winner”. Chris continues “There is very little opportunity, these days, for singers to learn and grow as performers. I know many look up to the likes of ‘X-Factor’ as their chance to shine but only a very small percentage get to experience
ETHANʼS STORY Like Most Goldenhar families you don’t know your child is affected until there born. My pregnancy was normal I had horrible morning sickness but there was nothing strange in that. On all the scans everything appeared normal the sonographer never mentioned anything strange. When Ethan was born we instantly spotted something was wrong he was breathing fine, 10 fingers, 10 toes but he only had 1 ear, it didn’t matter I thought instantly though they’ll make him a new one. At first the doctors suspected Down syndrome but quickly decided it wasn’t. Days passed in hospital different doctors came in and out, scans, x-rays and ultra sounds. Later we were informed Ethan’s condition was known as Hemi facial Microsomia (Goldenhar Syndrome) he has no ear and no hearing on his right side, his jaw and cheek bone and teeth are affected which will require surgery when he’s stopped growing. I couldn’t breast feed Ethan as the doctors just wanted to make sure he could feed properly as many children need to be feed through a nasal tube, Ethan actually could feed quite well but he had to have a towel rather than a bib as he could fire a spout of milk nearly 2 feet until he learnt how to suckle properly. We left hospital 5 days later with no information; we had to Google the name of his condition. At a meeting weeks later we were given the first literature on Goldenhar and it was from the Goldenhar Family Support Group. We visited hospital regularly until Ethan was one, and then annually meet a team of doctors, speech therapists and orthodontist at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital who monitor Ethan’s progress and the ENT department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. We have had CT scans at Nottingham Queens’s hospital which they made a real size copy of Ethan bones structure and have been referred to many doctors that may be able to help Ethan in the future. There are always things that surprises me about this condition
singing in front of a live audience. This competition provides them that opportunity in a wonderful venue”. The Mercury Newspaper is supporting Search For A Star this year and is offering the winner further opportunities of appearing at showcase events over the coming months. This year Search For A Star has decided to also give something back and is supporting three local charities; Derbyshire Association of the Blind, Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline and Alfreton Park Community Special School. If you are interested in finding out more about the event the please ring Chris on 07734 324479. If you just fancy a good night out then please come down to the Pacific Lounge Bar, 6 Church Lane, Chesterfield S40 1SD. The competition is running every Wednesday night until 25th August 2010. To book tickets please ring Vicki on 01246 210700.

Mans Best friend - A staggering 107,228 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities from UK streets in the last year, many of these inevitably will have been put to sleep, all sensible dog owners can help to reduce this statistic by having their pet neutered. In addition to preventing unwanted puppies, neutering your dog has many benefits, Female dogs who are spayed early in life have a significantly reduced chance of developing mammary (breast) cancer. Spayed females can’t develop pyometra, a condition of the uterus that can be quite severe and can even result in death, also spayed females tend to have more even temperaments especially if they are prone to having “false pregnancies” which can cause them to become moody and aggressive Neutered male dogs often are better behaved. Not only are they less likely to roam they are also less likely to mark their territory by urinating in the house and are much less likely to be aggressive toward other male dogs. These behavior benefits are particularly true if you castrate your dog between the ages of 9 and 12 months, before he becomes sexually mature and develops bad habits. Neutering prevents the development of prostate problems, testicular cancer, and anal adenomas both common cancers of older, intact male dogs. 21,000 reasons why you should get your cat neutered ! - because that’s potentially how many offspring could result from one un-neutered female cat and her descendants in just seven years! It is a complete myth that a female cat should be allowed to have one litter. There is no biological or psychological benefit to the cat whatsoever. Many stray, un-neutered males carry the FIV virus, and female cats are often infected if they are bitten during mating. Males often infect each other with FIV or feline leukaemia when fighting over a female. A female cat should be neutered (spayed) at 5 - 6 months but can be neutered at any age. Even if your cat is to be XQ as an ‘indoor cat’, it is kinder to neuter her, as she will still come into season, which is very frustrating for her and for you. Un-neutered females are also more at risk of developing cystic ovaries and the potentially fatal pyometra. Male Cats - if you love them, get them neutered! When an un-neutered male reaches maturity, he will begin to roam looking for a mate , this often leads to him not only having territory battles with other tom cats but also at high risk of being injured in a car accident . Un-neutered male cats are very aggressive towards other cats including females. They are regularly involved in fights resulting in a range of injuries including abscesses, and also spread of fatal viral diseases as mentioned before. Male cats can be neutered any time after the age of 4 months. If your cat is kept indoors, neutering is still the best option. Neutering will prevent him from become sexually frustrated and continually trying to escape, and will also save you from the smelly problem of urine-spraying. Having the snip will not ‘change his personality’ if anything it will make him more friendly. Rabbits - neutering is one of the best ways to ensure your pet will enjoy a long ,healthy and happy life. Obviously the main reason to have your rabbit neutered is so you can keep more than one rabbit without them fighting or causing a population explosion. It’s amazing what a change neutering brings to male rabbits. Male rabbits naturally want to fight off others from their territory, and for such a cuddly animal, they can be quite aggressive. They will also spray urine to mark territory If your male is neutered, he will be a much more loving, calm and cuddly animal. Similarly female rabbits become territorial and aggressive from the age of 4 months. They have repeated false pregnancies, and may growl, scratch and even bite their owners.. Spaying reduces and sometimes eliminates these behavioural problems. Female rabbits also have a high risk of developing uterine cancer by 5 years of age this is easily avoided.

SHEFFIELD CAT SHELTER
The Sheffield Cats Shelter is a small, local charity which has cared for cats & kittens since 1897. Our aim is to promote responsible pet ownership & help find loving homes for some of the many cats in Sheffield that, for some reason, do not have somebody to look after them. We never put a healthy cat to sleep; all the cats that come into our care are seen by a vet, are given the appropriate vaccinations & medicines and are neutered. We do not receive any lottery or state aid & our annual running costs are funded exclusively by voluntary donations & legacies.
Urgent Appeal
We have lots of lovely cats that are desperate for a new a home, such as these two below:
Dusty
Tibby
Dusty is a 12 year old male. He needs a home with lots of peace and quiet. He could live with another, quiet cat but needs his own space and some ‘Dusty time’ with his owner. Tibby is an 11 year old male. He is an absolute charmer, but he has diabetes and desperately needs an experienced, organised home. The Shelter will meet medical costs. If you can help us by adopting or fostering a cat, becoming a member or making a donation of food or money please contact us on 0114 272 4441 (between 1.00pm and 4.00pm) any day. SHEFFIELD VET WARNS OF HIDDEN DOG DANGER Sheffield vet, Richard Patton, from the Hunters Bar Veterinary Clinic, is warning dog owners to stay vigilant for signs of a potentially fatal disease which is affecting dogs across the country. Lungworm infection, caused by the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum, is a condition which can be fatal if not recognised early and treated correctly. Dogs become infected through eating slugs and snails which can carry the larvae of the parasite. “Once seen as a problem in isolated areas, this parasite appears to be spreading,” says Richard. “The veterinary community has worked hard over the past year to make owners aware of the danger. While more of our clients seem to have heard of the condition and recognise that it can be fatal, there is still a lack of understanding as to how dogs catch the disease and what symptoms to look out for.” This particular lungworm is able to live in most species of slug and snail. While some dogs will eat these common garden visitors on purpose, the hidden danger arises from small slugs and snails which can be accidentally swallowed when dogs are drinking from outdoor water bowls, playing with toys left out in the garden, or rummaging through the undergrowth. Certain slug species appear to be more effectively surviving through the winter, meaning they become more abundant in certain areas, while our recent wet summers favour breeding conditions for slugs and snails. Experts believe these factors could be aiding the spread of the disease. Movement of foxes, which can also become infected with the parasite, may also play a role in spreading the disease to new areas. Dogs which have picked up a lungworm infection can show a number of different symptoms. Richard Patton advises owners: “This lungworm often gives rise to breathing difficulties, ranging from a lack of energy to coughing. Dogs may also show general signs of being unwell including weight loss, reduced appetite and vomiting. Persistent bleeding, even from minor cuts is also a sign to watch out for. However, the symptoms can be varied so if owners are concerned about their dog’s health, they should contact their local veterinary practice for advice.” Thankfully treatment is available although conventional use of worming tablets is not effective. Vets can prescribe a specific spot-on treatment to deal with the infection. Owners are urged to look out for the signs of the disease and report them to their veterinary surgeon immediately as taking action early will improve the chance of recovery.

In Association with
I don’t get to go to many of the big tackle shows, so it was a nice to get a chance to visit the ‘Go-Fishing’ show this weekend at Cudmore Fisheries near Newcastle-underLyme in Staffordshire. Since it moved outdoors from the NEC in Birmingham, Cyril Brewster and his team have combined it with the ‘Fish o’ Mania’ match fishing finals which are shown on Sky television to give even more esteem to the event. The staff at Cudmore work tirelessly to make the show a success, so rightly deserve a bit of recognition for all the hard work they put in; well done boys! I went with the intention of seeing what is new on the tackle scene, meeting up with a few people I know and trying to make new contacts. I managed a chat with editor Kev Green, who I haven’t seen since last year’s show to find out what is going at ‘Improve Your Coarse Fishing’ magazine, Steve Broad (Angling Times) to discuss new articles and I met Ian Macmillan (Nash tackle) for the first time to talk ‘Northern Monkeys’! Throughout the day, I spoke to John Wilson of ‘Go-Fishing’ fame and found a smashing chap more than happy to meet and chat to his many fans young and old, Martin Bowler who is currently on tv with ‘Catching the Impossible’ (great show, watch it if you get chance), 4 times world champion Bob Nudd, and a host of other ‘stars’ of the angling world. The beauty of the outdoor show is that you can get up close and personal with your favourites, ask them a question and learn more about your angling; fantastic. I asked several of them to sign a prize for Reece Cooper who was the first winner of Angler’s Corner junior picture
competition and they were all happy to recognise Reece’s award. Well done Reece, the prize will be with you shortly... I would also like to thank the staff at ‘www. intofish.com’ with whom I was lucky enough to spend some time with during the day. This is a stunning new website along similar lines to ‘Facebook’ which gives anglers the opportunity to upload and log each of their catches and share them with others. Director Simon Baker explained that they are aiming for 150,000 members by the end of their first year; imagine the information you could access with so many users?! Fisheries, tackle shops, clubs and manufacturers, tips, tactics and methods, all in one place and it’s so good even Matt Hayes is a member! Why not take a look at the site? It’s completely free to join and well worth a visit. Further developments are planned so get involved and see if you can make a difference. Thanks also to the lads at ‘Rigmarole’ tackle who demonstrated their range of coated braids and fluorocarbons; I was most impressed and took some away to play with! I’ll let you know what I get up to, but first impressions are that the kit has untold possibilities for me to construct some really devious rigs! I’m still on the lookout for your catch reports and news from your fisheries, so if you would like to feature in Angler’s Corner, then get in touch at clint597@btinternet.com

KING GEORGE PREVIEW
HORSE RACING by Timelord It’s King George week. This year’s renewal looks like being another cracker with Workforce and Cape Blanco clashing again, and taking on their elders. It will be fascinating to see which Derby form works out best and whether this year’s three year olds are up to beating the older bunch. As I have said in previous weeks I think that the weight-for-age scale generally favours the classic generation at this time of year. This should mean that Cape Blanco and Workforce have the best of it. At the current prices, of this pair, I just favour Cape Blanco. Apart from a blip in the French Derby on unsuitably soft ground he is unbeaten. He won the Irish Derby last time out and beat Workforce in the Dante, although there were legitimate excuses for that one (bit slipped through the mouth) and Workforce has since improved to win the English Derby. I still favour Cape Blanco however as I think that he is a very consistent and genuine animal and, for reasons I can’t really substantiate, I still have a lingering suspicion that the English Derby was a bit freakish. I will find out one way or the other this weekend. Having said this about the three year olds the older horses are certainly no mugs. Readers of this column will know that I hold Youmzain in very high regard and Dar Re Mi and Daryakana are certainly good animals on their day. Harbinger was extremely impressive in the Group 2 Hard-
wicke at Royal Ascot and is on the upgrade, having won all his races this year. He also rates a big danger. As I write this, with the High Street bookmakers, Workforce is best priced at evens (bet 365), Harbinger 5/2 (Paddy Power, Betfred, boylesports), Cape Blanco 7/1 (Hills), Dar Re Mi 14/1 (Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Hills, boylesports, bluesq), Youmzain 14/1 (Ladbrokes, bluesq) and Daryakana 16/1 (Betfred, bluesq, Hills). I cannot see either of the other two figuring, other than as pacemakers. At the prices therefore I think that, overall and despite the weight advantage for the three year olds, the best value lies with Youmzain. He is genuine and consistent and was only just touched off recently in France having been set a tough task by Richard Hughes. He rates a good value bet each way at the current prices which may even lengthen yet if there are market moves for Workforce and Harbinger. Of the three year olds the value lies with Cape Blanco in my opinion. As it is Ascot I thought that I might try to do a “Frankie” and go through the card. My selections for this admittedly almost impossible feat are (with reserves): 1.30 Fishforcompliments (if absent, Dabbers Ridge); 2.05 Satin Love (if absent, Major Art); 2.40 Dingle View (n.b. also engaged in the 2.00 York so, if absent, Perfect Tribute then Margot Did); 3.15 Ginger Jack (if absent, Capponi); 3.50 Yaa Wayl (if absent, Treadwell); 4.25 Youmzain (if absent, Cape Blanco); 5.35 Opera Gal (if absent, Explorator). Apart from Ascot there is televised racing from York and Newmarket on Channel 4, including some fiendishly difficult looking handicaps that will no doubt form
the Scoop 6. I have had a look at these and, without too much confidence have selected the following (with reserves): York 2.00 Dingle View (if absent, Sirens, then Master Macho); 2.30 Magic Echo (if absent, Starla Dancer, then Amada Carter or Fanditha); 3.05 Stotsfold (if absent, Bushman, then Cavalryman); 3.40 Lowdown (if absent, Damika, then Valery Borzov). Newmarket 2.15 Putra One (if absent, Plaisterer, then Record Breaker); 2.45 I’m Super Too (if absent, Admire The View, then Agony And Ecstasy); 3.20 Perfect Flight (if absent, Absa Lutte, then Poppet’s Lovein). Good luck if you have a punt! Last week’s results (something of an improvement on recent weeks for this column): Friday Newbury 3.10 – Temple Meads – Non runner; Saturday Market Rasen 2.00 Son of Flicka – Non runner; 3.35 Polyfast – pulled up Newbury 2.15 Barney McGrew – 9th (last) @ 28/1 3.20 Temple Meads – won 5/1; The Curragh 3.40 Arabian Gleam – 6th @4/1 Co Fav. Sunday 2.35 Dunboyne Express – won 9/2 3.40 Sarafina – Non runner. Overall there were 8 selections of which 5 ran. There were two winners @ 5/1 and 9/2 giving a return of 11.5 points for a 5 points stake, a profit of 6.5 points.

TOULOUSE; GOOD TREK RUGBY LEAGUE by Jim Collins
Eagles made it two straight away wins with a great performance in the heat of the South West of France. Half-back Simon Brown, signed from Doncaster, made his debut and scored a try on seven minutes to level the scores after Toulouse took an early lead. Eagles led 18-12 at half-time thanks to tries from Matty Brooks and Tangi Ropati. Tim Bergin converted all three of those, then added two tries of his own after the break for a personal haul of 18 points. Alex Szostak also touched down for Sheffield but late tries rescued a bonus point for the Frech side. Toulouse’s try scorers were Sylvain Houles (two), Bruno Ormeno and Patelisio Pelo with Nathan Wynn kicking the goals.

REID RETURNS TWIN TO CHARLTON SUCCESSES LOCAL FOOTBALL SAYS KB www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades have given Kyel Reid the green light to join Charlton Athletic. The winger, 23, has signed for the Addicks after being handed a free transfer. United have negotiated a healthy sell on clause. Reid joined the Blades a year ago for free but struggled to cement a regular place in Kevin Blackwell’s plans. The was loaned to Charlton in January and made 17 appearances as they reached the League One play-offs. The Londoners failed to return to the Championship, but Reid impressed sufficiently for the club to return for his services.

The two biggest positives the Blades can take from their Malta tournament success have nothing to do with their lifting the trophy for winning both matches in the tournament on Friday night. After disposing of Vittoriosa Stars 1-0 and then Hibernians of Malta 2-0 in the final Kevin Blackwell looked beyond the “good workout, just what we wanted from the games” response and pointed to factors of greater importance: “We picked up no injuries and the mood about the camp is markedly different to this time last year. Getting through unscathed in two 45 minute games is crucial for us after how things went last season. “We are still two or three players short at the moment and I had to play Johnny Ertl at centreback because of that but he did a good job and showed what I had brought him in for with his effort and adaptability. “This time last year we were a long way from having a full squad but we have worked to put that right - and are still doing - and there is already a different feel about the place. “It has been very hot and sweaty over here and the lads have given their all, learnt about each other and they seem to be a group that is comfortable. “They are still learning what everyone else can or can’t do and tonight we had a back five that hadn’t played together before in the final. “But that is why we have these games and whilst I am not looking for performance peaks at this stage there were some promising aspects of our work tonight - the understanding will come.”
Owls striker Paul Heffernan believes competition for places will boost Wednesday’s chances of promotion this season. The 28-year-old stored an hour under his belt against Grimsby Town on Saturday after playing the full 90 minutes at Hallam FC earlier in the week. He told swfc.co.uk: “The squad is looking very strong and there is a lot of competition for places wherever you look, so it’s up to us to go out there and pick up points wherever we can but it’s a long, tough season ahead. “The squad we have here has experience, a lot of the lads have played at a higher level and hopefully that will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season. “We have the players capable of getting promotion.” Wednesday slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Blundell Park on Saturday but Heffernan has taken the positives from the friendly, particularly on the fitness-front. He went on: “I found it alright. I got 60 minutes on the pitch and, fitness-wise, things are coming together. Obviously the new lads are still getting to know each other and gelling into the squad but personally the game went ok. “The full backs were getting forward and putting balls into the box as well as the wingers, as we saw with our goal which is great. The more service they give, the better because that’s what strikers thrive on.”

HEFFERNAN HAILS OWLS OPTIONS
Sheffield United have issued a thank you to club sponsor Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and the people of Malta for their support during the Blades’ pre-season tour of the Mediterranean island. United’s visit to Malta proved a resounding success both on and off the pitch, with hundreds of Blades fans embracing the most action-packed tour the club has ever staged. The climax to the pre-season tour saw United beat Vittoriosa Stars and Hibernians to lift the JPL Cisk Lager Cup. Mike Farnan, group executive director at Sheffield United, was charged with overseeing the club’s stay in Malta. Farnan said: “The success of the tour underlines the special relationship that has grown between the club and the Maltese community as a whole. “Throughout the trip, Sheffield United and our fans were overwhelmed with the welcome we received in Malta. The club would like to thank everyone that played a part in making our visit such a memorable occasion. “We hope that this bond sees some our Maltese friends visit Bramall Lane, so we can replicate the same levels of hospitality.” Sheffield United would also like to acknowledge the support from the Malta FA, Hibernian FC, Vittoriosa Stars, Fortina Spa Resort, Sheffield United Supporters Club Malta and the Blades’ travel partner Alpine Sterling. A special note of appreciation is given to the large numbers of Blades fans that made the journey to Malta. The travelling support made it a trip to remember. Now back on English soil, the Blades’ next pre-season fixture is away to Burton Albion, which kicks-off on the evening of Tuesday 20th July.

OWLS SLIP AT GRIMSBY
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday suffered their first reverse of the summer as Grimsby Town emerged 2-1 winners at Blundell Park on Saturday. Alan Connell gave the Mariners an early lead before Luke Boden restored parity right on half time but Peter Bore struck the decisive goal for Grimsby eight minutes before the end. Wednesday boss Alan Irvine started four of his eight new recruits. Jon Otsemobor and Daniel Jones lined up in defence, while Chris Sedgwick and Paul Heffernan kicked off the contest in midfield and attack respectively. The first chance fell to the Owls, with Heffernan breaking free down the middle on ten minutes only to drag his shot wide of Kenny Arthur’s far post. The hosts responded with Michael Leary drilling a powerful volley that Richard O’Donnell did well to beat away before Grimsby stole into the lead on 19 minutes. Home debutant Connell found space on the right side of the penalty area to aim an accurate half-volley that flew across O’Donnell and into the young keeper’s far corner. The Mariners had the upper hand and ex-Owl Lee Peacock - skipper for the day - almost doubled the advantage but his low angled drive whistled across the danger zone to safety. Wednesday inched their way back into proceedings as the first half unfolded and captain James O’Connor went close six minutes before the interval with a curling effort from 15 yards that fell just the wrong side of the post. The same player had an even better chance on 43 minutes after Heffernan rounded the keeper and played O’Connor in only for the Irishman to sidefoot over the crossbar with the goal gaping. But the Owls did draw level right on the half time whistle as Sedgwick floated a looping ball over to the back post, where Boden was on hand to head firmly past Arthur and high into the roof of the net. Wednesday started the second half how they ended the first, with Sedgwick at the hub. The former Preston winger teed up Heffernan with a fine delivery moments after the restart and the striker’s header was only just wide. Grimsby motored forward themselves, though, and Peacock forced O’Donnell into an unorthodox save with his legs after turning smartly on the edge of the box. Wednesday made a string of changes on the hour, with Neil Mellor, Marcus Tudgay, Darren Potter, Gary Teale and Lewis Buxton all getting a slice of the action. And Tudgay went close moments after coming on, as did Jermaine Johnson moments later as the Owls began to stamp some real authority on the game. Academy product Liam Palmer was given an outing by Alan Irvine and trialist Adriano Moke also came on for the closing stages. But it was the Mariners that took the spoils as a Bore snapshot from 25 yards whistled into the back of the net to give Grimsby the perfect pre-season start.
Owls: O’Donnell, Otsemobor, Jones, O’Connor (Potter 62), Beevers (Buxton 62), Hinds, Sedgwick (Mellor 59), Miller (Palmer 72), Heffernan (Tudgay 59), Johnson (Moke 74), Boden (Teale 62)
