Sheffield’s two-year countdown to the 2012 Olympics begins With two years to go until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Sheffield is celebrating a year of outstanding achievements and is firmly focused on maximising opportunities for the city in the two year countdown until the games start in 2012. Extensive work has been carried out to help ensure that Sheffield’s offer is recognised both nationally and internationally, as well as putting in place a number of initiatives to directly benefit the people of Sheffield. On the 27th July, exactly 2 years until the start of the games, four volunteers from Sheffield were selected to become the regional faces of LOCOGs volunteering campaign for London 2012 and two of the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders in Sport (SAYLS) volunteers will travel to London to raise awareness of the integral role over 70,000 volunteers will play in the delivery of the games. There have a number of major developments and achievements throughout the year, these include: • Sheffield’s golden girl
Jessica Ennis became World Heptathlon Champion in August 2009, closely followed by winning the World Indoor Pentathlon title in March 2010. A further 4 Sheffield based athletes were also crowned World Champions in 2009. • The 4 Great Britain high performance training centres in boxing, diving, volleyball and table tennis committed themselves to being based in Sheffield in the run up to 2012. These 4 sports alone have generated between £1.5 £2 million into the local economy. • Sheffield’s Major Sports Events and 2012 Programme for 2009/10 has generated between £6-8million in to the local economy, as well as having one of its events the 65th English Open Table Tennis Championships voted best in the world by the international federation. • While other cities are aiming to host International training camps in 2012, Sheffield is ahead of the game and already hosting them now (with over 20 hosted so far). This year we will have hosted Japan volleyball who are number 5 in the world.
A four nations boxing camp with Great Britain, France, Kazakhstan and China. US boxing, Canadian and Swedish Paralympic teams for wheelchair rugby. Canadian Paralympic sports of wheelchair basketball and goalball. • The links between raising participation and delivering international sporting events have been improved by giving over 4000 Sheffield children the chance to try diving, table tennis and goalball for the first time. Cllr Roger Davison, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism for Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield has already benefitted significantly from London 2102. The games are a catalyst that will help to increase participation in sport, benefit the economy of our city and help to raise its profile. “It is important that we recognise the considerable amount of work that is taking place to maximise these opportunities and understand the different ways that the people of Sheffield can benefit right up until 2012.” The next major event that will take place in the city is The British Gas
asa National Age Group Championships and British Gas asa National Youth Championships, taking place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. Over 40 City of Sheffield swimmers have qualified to take part in the event which attracts 1000’s of visitors to the city. The athletes competing in these Championships hold the key for the future success of British Swimming, and many of the GB Olympic squad embarked on their Olympic journey competing in asa National Age Group and Youth Championships over the years. Sheffield City Council launched it’s annual ‘Sheffield - Lighting the Flame for Sport’ strategy on 27th July with details of the many achievements to date and highlights from the past year also important developments and aspirations for the next two years. The ultimate goal of the strategy is to leave a lasting legacy for Sheffield as a result of the London 2012 games. For more information, visit www.sheffieldlightingtheflame.co.uk

COPLEY’S COLUMN When you read this I will be enjoying my second week on Majorca. My propensity for mixing with people much younger than myself has meant that Glen Dale is not known to them. Glen was a founder member of top sixties vocal harmony group, The Fortunes, who were based in Birmingham. Originally named the Clifftones, and later the Merry Men, who backed London vocalist Robbie Hood.who was managed by music promoter and owner of pirate radio station, Radio City, which was based in the Thames Estuary, Reg Calvert. It was Calvert’s involvement in the latter that ultimately led to his death, when he was shot to death during an argument with an employee of rival pirate station, Radio London. Their involvement with Robbie Hood did not last long as they were required to wear theatrical Merry Men outfits on stage including green tights, which were embarrassing for the smaller members. Now managed by Reg Calvert, they were re-named The Fortunes, and were signed by Decca Records in 1963. After four mediocre recordings, they really hit the big time when they recorded a song, ‘You’ve Got Your Troubles’ written by Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook, a hit song writing team of the era, also known as David and Johnathan. Cook also sang with Blue Mink. ‘You’ve Got Your Troubles’ reached no 2 in the British charts, number one in Canada and featured in the American top ten at number seven. Now interna-
tionally known, a second single, ‘Here It Comes Again’ also penned by Greenaway and Cook, quickly followed, and reached number four in the British charts. Now very successful, the Fortunes went on a package tour of America with Peter and Gordon and one of my favourite groups of all time,’The Moody Blues’ who at that time were enjoying worldwide success with their hit single ‘Go Now’ A quick further single, ‘This Golden Ring’ was also successful charting at fifteen, but the next few singles missed the charts and in July 1966, Glen Dale left the group to pursue a solo career, playing many gigs in Sheffield pubs and clubs. Glen Dale, born Richard Garforth, was born in Deal, Kent on the 24th April 1943. He performed latterly very occasionally, notably at my birthday party, until tragically having to have his left leg amputated recently. I visited him in hospital and was amazed by his cheerful attitude, maybe because I informed him that amputees, for some reason, were an incredible attraction to the opposite sex. I have been friendly with Glen for over twenty years, and I must say he is one of the nicest, most genuine men in showbusiness. Tickets for his benefit night, to be held at Wadsley WMC, on Friday 3rd September, priced at six pounds are now on sale from the Mercury office, Telephone 01142 763633. Artistes, who have given their time and talent completely free of charge are Diana Edwards, international performer as Agnetha,
Paul, who at the NME Awards in February was quite rightly ‘crowned’ the year’s Godlike Genius, released his eagerly anticipated new album on Island Records on April 19th. “Wake Up The Nation” has earned him a nomination for this year’s Mercury Music Prize. Anyone going to see Paul’s shows should expect to hear highlights from the new album plus a good smattering of oldies and goldies and perhaps a few surprises… Tickets priced £35 (booking fee may apply) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 26th March. You can purchase your tickets in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk or www.arenaticketshop.co.uk

Anyone who has not seen Junkyard Dog before are in for a real treat. Their will be personal appearances by local legend, Paul Shane, from Hi De- Hi, and the very funny Lance Edwards. At a recent visit to the Forest Showbar, I was pleased to meet up again with my old pal, Paul Joshua. Paul is a great guy, and I was saddened to learn that he has retired from the local circuit, due to business commitments. Paul has entertained us regally over the years and will be sadly missed. However, don’t rule out his occasional Saturday night guest spots at the Forest. The football season starts on Saturday, and I am really expecting my beloved Owls to bounce straight back to the Championship league, as due to some shrewd wheeling and dealing by manager Alan Irvine, the team is much stronger than last season. As you read this I shall be enjoying the Majorcan heat wave, and best of all, having a cigarette with my pint of San Miguel in the bars. It is high time this country followed suit and rebelled about these ridiculous ‘Big Brother’ laws from Europe that infringe on our civil liberty.

ALBERT SNODGRASS Smart Ass Answers A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without missing a beat she said, “Sir, I need to see your ticket not your stub.” A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but she couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock boy replied, “No ma’am, they’re dead.” The cop got out of his car and the kid who was stopped for speeding rolled down his window. “I’ve been waiting for you all day,” the cop said. The kid replied, “Yeah, well I got here as fast as I could.” When the cop finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket. A truck driver was driving along the freeway. A sign comes up that reads, “Low Bridge Ahead.” Before he knows it, the bridge is right ahead of him and he gets stuck under the bridge. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, “Got stuck, huh?” The truck driver says, “No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas.” A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow’s final exam. “Now class, I won’t tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury or illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that’s it, no other excuses whatsoever!” A smart ass guy in the back of the room raised his hand and asked, “What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?” The entire class is reduced to laughter and snickering. When silence is restored, the teacher smiles knowingly at the student, shakes her head and sweetly says “Well, I guess you’d have to write the exam with your other hand.”

LCD & HOT DONʼT FEAR CHIP DOUBLE THE REAPER! UP @MAGNA Long term friends and pioneering electronic musical comrades LCD Soundsystem & Hot Chip have announced they will play a series of special co-headline shows in the UK this autumn. This includes a trip to what I consider to be one of the best live music venues in the UK, Magna at Rotherham on Saturday 13th November. LCD Soundsystem recently released their third album ‘This Is Happening’ to mass critical acclaim. Since then, the speculation has continued to build that this is their final album and the prelude to the end! Anyone who witnessed their recent sold-out headline tour of the UK, Wireless headline show and rapturous Glastonbury performance will know that LCD are still one of the most explosive and relevant live bands around today. Currently in mainland Europe on a festival trail, they return to the US heading to Japan, Korea, Australia (for another bunch of shows with Hot Chip) before returning to the UK later this Summer for Reading/ Leeds, Electric Picnic & Bestival. The 5-headed pop colossus known as Hot Chip have an enviable live reputation. With an arsenal that includes hits ‘Over and Over’, Ready For The Floor’, ‘Boy From School’ & ‘One Life Stand’ to name but a few, the band continue to tour the summer festivals before heading to the U.S. for their biggest headline shows to date at New York’s Summerstage in Central Park and 2nd on the bill under Lady Gaga at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. Having recently stormed Glastonbury as penultimate headliners on the Other Stage and still fresh from the critical acclaim showered upon them for their fourth long player, “One Life Stand” which garnered their first Radio 1 A-list single (One Life Stand) and lead to collaborations with likes of Peter Serafinowicz and Bonnie Prince Billie (I Feel Better), Hot Chip continue to prove they are one of the most interesting, forward thinking and most loved bands in the UK today. Together this marks one of the most interesting & un-missable tours of the year. The tickets for the Magna event went on sale on last Friday. LCD Soundsystem & Hot Chip - Magna, Rotherham - Tickets available from www.livenation.co.uk priced £25

Fear Factory play an exclusive warm up gig (before they play the Bloodstock festival) in Sheffield at the Corp on the 4th. Fear Factory is an American industrial/groove metal band. The band formed in 1989 and has released seven full-length albums and a number of singles and re-mixes. Over the course of their career they have evolved from a succession of styles, as well as steadily pioneered a combination of the styles death metal, groove metal, thrash metal and industrial metal. The resultant sound proved to be enormously influential on the metal scene from the mid-90s and onwards. Their last album, Transgression, described as a more experimental and atypical effort, also contains elements of pop music and progressive metal. The band has performed at three Ozzfests as well as the inaugural Gigantour and has had singles in the US Mainstream Rock Top 40 and albums in the Billboard Top 40, 100 and 200. They have toured more than 2000 shows, and have sold over a million albums in the U.S. alone. Fear Factory’s innovative approach towards, and hybridization of the genres
MONA LISA! Ramona is the daughter of an African American U.S. soldier and a German. She grew up with foster parents who recognised her talent and allowed her private vocal lessons. In 1969 she was discovered in Frankfurt at a talent contest and recorded her first single. Ramona began as a creative outlet for producer / audio engineer / guitarist Dave Fritz when he wasn’t engineering or playing guitar in Junior Achiever (A Canadian power pop band formed in 2009 featuring Dave Fritz and Jeremy Knowles) he kept busy recording demos at home. Dave finally decided to commit five of these songs to “tape”, his initial intention to give a few copies away to family and friends. Dave began to take Ramona more seriously however once others took interest in his project. Upon hearing the track “A Way Over” bass player Matt trotter insisted that Ramona perform live and that he be part of it. Dave’s former band mate Jeremy
TIME TO FISH “According to the fabled Rough guide to Rock, Country Joe & The Fish ‘formed in Berkeley, California, 1965’ and made ‘substantial contributions to the halcyon days of psychedelic music’. The very same Barry ‘The Fish’ Melton graced Northampton with this intimate gig, taking to the hot seat only after Joe Woolley set the scene with his always delightfully affecting yet unaffected acoustic ditties. While the rickety old Labour Club holds no more history for some than a few Friday night drinking excursions, Barry Melton is enamoured with its links to a labour movement arguably long forgotten. debut album ‘The Family Jewels’ was released on 22 February 2010. It peaked at number five in the UK Albums Chart and was certified silver in the United Kingdom days before its release. ‘I Am Not a Robot’ was the third single released and it’s the one that really broke her through. Now we have the fourth single. ‘Oh No’. It’s a completely different animal to ‘Robot’. This is upbeat, poppy and very cartoon like, especially if you see the video! I don’t love it, but it’s a decent pop song. I do love her voice though and when you’ve got a face like hers then, well, I can excuse her of almost anything.

You kinda always know what you’re going to get with this band, that isn’t a criticism, when you’re this good why spoil it and change musical styles. This is a big production, pure Linkin Park through and through and guess what…………..it doesn’t have a rap in it, result!
Knowles, who had already contributed to the EP, eagerly hopped on board as drummer. A superb talent in her own right, keyboardist / vocalist Elliot Caroll was the only person to reply to an online advert posted by the band. As fate would have it she was the missing piece fitting perfectly into the Ramona puzzle. (I love it when a plan comes together!). The new line up had completed an EP, secured a record deal and filmed a music video long before they had even played a single show together. Ramona’s debut EP “Mornington Crescent Now Open” is melodic and infectious, following in the great power pop tradition established by pioneers such as The Kinks and The Cars. The EP was recorded by Dave in Toronto at Savile Row studio. Finding inspiration in classic 60’s Mod records, the EP was a conscious effort to make a recording that was a little rough around the edges and organic. ‘Mornington Crescent Now Open’ is a sonic departure from sterile and heavily produced rock albums that seem to dominate the music scene in North America. Ramona is now out on tour and you can catch her in

inspiring folk songs of the early 1930s American labour movement, mirrored in the union posters on the walls of Northampton’s own Labour Club. Turns out that like a fine wine you’ve never heard of but you know you’re going to enjoy, Barry Melton is rich and satisfying in the drinking. Far from stuck in a 1960s time warp, he recalls Woodstock psychedelia with the wry humour of a man who knows that getting wasted and writing songs about hamburgers falling in love with hotdogs is a novelty that just won’t last. Still, he doesn’t regret one moment of it, and neither do we as his awesome, and at times ridiculous, gravelly blues and traditional union chants float into the night air, reminding Northampton that there’s a vintage you can’t buy on Camden High Street. And The Fish has it, down to a T.”

of industrial metal, death metal and alternative metal has had a lasting impact on metal music ever since the release of their first album in 1992. Fear Factory is noteworthy among contemporaries for their lyrical focus on science fiction, with much of their music telling a single story spanning several concept albums. The band has often been called a “stepping stone” leading mainstream listeners to venture into less-known/more extreme bands, and are consistently appreciated. After long and extreme legal battles with ex band members the band is back on form and if “METAL” is your thing then this is one of the originals…”don’t miss!” Fear Factory (Special Bloodstock Warm-up Show) + Beholder: The Corporation, Wednesday 4th August, £15 adv., Doors 7:00PM, age 14+
When someone is stunning looking, they always grab my attention……… ……I know, shallow eh, but there ya go. I first heard and saw Marina and the Diamonds when they/she did an appearance on TV’s Justin Collins show. I ‘Am Not a Robot’ was the song and I really liked it (although it does tend to split opinion it seems). But what got me even more was her face. It was so full of expression but in a totally sultry way, I couldn’t take my eyes of her. So much so that her performance enhanced the music and I believe that is such an important part of the whole music experience. You need to see something special not just hear it. Hence my negative reaction to the new Magic Numbers album we reviewed last week (although with that album there wasn’t even anything special in the music, so a lose lose situation there). Marina is a welsh girl of Greek decent, her name is actually Marina Lambrini Diamandis, not sure why her middle name is Lambrini? But those Welsh girls do like a drink or two, or so I’m told. Her
One of THE best rock band ever! I’m sure I don’t have to explain much to you about these guys. Let’s just say, they are probably the only band that can make rap sound really cool. With huge album success, movie soundtracks, stadium tours, there’s little else for this band to achieve, except of course to keep it all going.
Ramona: O2 Academy 2, Wednesday 4th August, Door time: 7.00pm, Show time: TBC
Most people love their debut album ‘Funeral’……….I didn’t. I found it a tad drab. But it was successful. Now we’re here with the first single from the tricky third album named ‘The Suburbs’. Its pretty grandiose, a bit self indulgent and it seems they take themselves far too seriously. As the dying indie scene continues grabbing momentum though, these guys could be one of the last bands around that are of any importance. The piano is a bit plinky plonky for my liking but it’s not too bad a tune overall. If you like your indie a bit pompous, you’ll love this.

HOROSCOPES Aries (Mar21/Apr20) Steer clear of disputes brewing locally or at work. Issues you’re dragged into can’t easily be resolved so you are best staying out of them. Keep those who are known to stir up trouble at arm’s length and keep your opinions to yourself.

Taurus (Apr21/May21) A female relative offloads some of her troubles and emotional problems onto you. You seem to succeed better in helping others than in pulling off anything you’re trying to achieve on a personal level now. Gemini (May22/June21) Relationships are highlighted by your ruling planet Mercury but with Pluto involved early in September, things might not be a bed of roses! Something you hear or see sends your active imagination into a fairytale spin! Cancer (June22/July23) If you’ve come up with a practical way of saving time or increasing your general output or efficiency, tell everyone! The sooner you voice your ideas, the quicker they’ll be put into practice. Leo (July24/Aug23) A young person in the family is keen on demonstrating a newly learned skill and you will be genuinely impressed by their talent. What might upset you is the lack of encouragement they are receiving from those who should know better. Virgo (Aug24/Sept23) Tension between you and a relative or neighbour is starting to get you down. You find it hard to relax when the air between you is so brittle. Perhaps you are a little on the tetchy side or maybe your partner is irritable and moody. Libra (Sept24/Oct23) If you’re feeling as if you need more colour in your life, surround yourself with rich, warm hues. Bright and uplifting hints and tints will raise your spirits when you wake up on a grey morning. It’s often the simplest things of life which please you most now. Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) People pulling out of long standing arrangements for no justifiable reason could cause you a lot of inconvenience. Despite your annoyance, you will be determined to come up with alternative plans. Why let someone who lacks good manners and consideration ruin things completely? Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Your involvement and even your interest in a distant matter is not easy to sustain. You are reluctant to cut ties with someone but communication between you is increasingly difficult because of the distance that separates you. Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) It might be because someone is being temperamental or moody but there is something of a hushed hue prevailing right now. People seem to be walking on egg shells and all the hubbub of everyday life is muted. You sense tension in the atmosphere but it won’t be easy to explain why. Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) A partner or close friend demands more time than you had planned to give them. You need to take everyone’s expectations into account and discuss issues to find a compromise. Is there a middle ground? You might sense it is insecurity or uncertainty that causes them to act in this demanding way. Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) A friend, neighbour or workmate’s curiosity tests your patience. You’re reluctant to show your anger and your never ending patience while you’re secretly fuming inside is to your credit.

A WEEK OF FUN
CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker Plenty of news this week! It’s official – the “Gents” are reforming for a few gigs, with Glyn, Martin and Steve getting together and kicking off in September at the Leopard in Doncaster. Also “A View from S62” will be performing at this weekend’s Party in the Park at Rosehill in Rotherham, a great day out with street dancing and stalls alongside the Main Stage. I had the pleasure of returning to the Alverly pub on Friday, and I was delighted to see Ozzy (aka Tony) and Elaine sitting at the front, as usual. They travel many miles to follow Clubland’s finest, and it’s good to be able to take this opportunity to thank them for the support they give to many acts. A little story from Saturday night – I was in York and halfway through my “Fallen from Hell” set, when Paul, the Chairman (who’s a great guy) passed me a note asking me to sing some Neil Diamond tracks! Thanks to everyone at Haxby for a great night! Finally a note on the 12 hour charity event I previewed last week. Personally I managed to catch “Mask of Virtue” – young, up and coming act with a great future, and I believe you can catch them at the Dickens soon. I also saw old friends Carl and Rob performing with “E Street” – a classic Bruce Springsteen tribute band. The event was very well supported and hopefully made a good deal of money for the charities.
FREEDOM TO CHOOSE So, we have seen the first toothless gesture by the new coalition government. In fact toothless barely describes the act-gumless would be better quoted! The adopted son of Sheffield Hallam, who now masquerades as our Deputy Prime Minister had the political opening of a lifetime for one so young, yet threw it all away in 15 seconds flat! Being leader of the Lib/Dems was about as far up the political ladder as our Nick could have hoped for. The position as elected Prime Minister was always a complete ‘no-no’ for the Lib/Dems would never ever command enough seats to actually be in power. By sidling up to Cameron and forming a coalition government it gave the boy from Chalfont St Giles (Buckinghamshire) the opportunity to introduce some of that liberalism and freedoms into Parliamentary procedures that the Lib/Dems had been crowing
about in the months leading up to the election. “Our Nick” decides that the fairest way to see what the people were most upset about was to create a website entitled “YOUR FREEDOMS” where topics could be introduced and debated fully before going for consideration by “Our Nick”. From scrapping dog licences to re-opening extinct coal mines was suggested on the site but one subject went sky rocketing to the top of the list in a matter of days. REFORM THE SMOKING BAN There were more sub headings and comments under that title than any other subject raised on the site. If you looked carefully through the comments sections all the answers to allowing smoking rooms in pubs & clubs were there. Thousands of people responded to that particular heading, far more than ideas about immigration, economic salvation etc, yet in a 15 second video clip “Our Nick” dashed all hope with these words, “.....and of course we won’t be visiting things like bringing back hanging or the smoking ban.....” What a complete prat! He created an opening for 25% of the population to suddenly
hail him as the new messiah then promptly wet his infantile political nappy when he saw the multitude of responses from the general public. First chance of providing liberalism & much promised freedoms and what does he do? soils his pants and runs away. So, despite all his brave words and bluster he is no more-nor- no less the same as Blair-when he came to power all those miserable years ago! He’s not interested in the people who matter, the working classes, the very backbone of this country, he is only interested in being seen to ‘tow the line’, to be ‘politically correct’, for there are 5 years good wages to be had as deputy PM! That’s if this coalition lasts past Christmas? Sad to say, “the adopted son” has made a giant faux-pas with his first Parliamentary action for the whole website is now looked upon as a shambolic attempt to give the people hope when in actual fact he has led them up the garden path. It is the most naive of moves for whatever trust people had in him has disappeared in 15 seconds! In Yorkshire a pub is being closed down by Punch Taverns
A VALID POINT CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker A point was made to me this week, and I would really like the Club Committees out there to take notice! Why is it that a number of clubs use the artists’ dressing rooms as a store cupboard? There are exceptions, and many clubs go out of their way to make the acts feel welcome, but there is nothing more off-putting than having to shift chairs, cleaning kit, old speakers and busted fluorescent tubes before you can even hang your clothes on a peg! I know if a band piled up their cases around the bingo machine or even in the Secretary’s office then there would a bit of a to-do to put it mildly! On the other hand, can I give a big thank-you to Southey and Handsworth and the others who do go out of their way to welcome the acts that perform there!
GOOD NEWS
CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker I am happy to report good news on the “Internationals” front since I last wrote. Neil from the Was Is Agency has been tracking down the missing members, and hopefully by this time next week we will have details and some photos of the lads! Was Is will also be next month’s featured agency. I’ll be talking to Neil and Carl Taylor, to get their views on the future prospects for Clubland. I’m certain they will also be able to contribute some interesting and very funny stories from their careers! We would also be happy to print any tales from the other acts out there, so send them along to the Mercury!
after decades of service to the community because “it is not viable anymore”. Punch Taverns further stated, “the barrelage was 227 three years ago, it is now only 60 therefore the pub can no longer operate as a going concern.” Just over 3 years ago there wasn’t a smoking ban-now there is! Where have 167 barrels gone in 3 years? Answer: to the cheap booze outlets called supermarkets. Smokers don’t like being treated worse than dogs as they are human beings so they have walked-and they will continue walking until this law is reformed. Licensees must join the fight to save this great industry, their livelihoods, their lives! It is no good sitting back waiting to see what will happen next. Sit and suffer or get up and fight, your adopted son has betrayed you all! You can reply to any article found on the Talkback page by emailing info@mercurynewspaper. co.uk or by writing to Mercury Newspaper, 4B Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG

Sir Cleanalot
Commercial & Domestic Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning. Pubs, Clubs, Hotels & Domestic.
The first thing a customer will see is the floor, even if not looking down some floors will be sticky under foot. This will have a negative effect on your premises and customers. • Soil in carpets is generally embedded so suction cleaning alone will not be enough to remove it. Choose a deep clean or a revival clean to bring the life back into your carpets and upholstery, from as little as £2 per square meter. • Chewing gum removal and stain protection. • Dried within 1 to 2 hours. • Outside smoking areas cleaned and refreshed including scrubbing the floor. • Guttering cleared to avoid leaks and flooding. • Toilet areas cleared and refreshed.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally

Putting people in Have your say on Bus Vision for control of their care hearing services in South Rotherham More than 1,000 people in Sheffield are now benefiting from an innovative scheme which puts people in control of their own social care. Self Directed Support is a new way of allocating money to people receiving social care. People have a personal budget which means they can decide which services best meet their needs. Since Sheffield began to pilot the scheme in March 2008, 1,356 people have received a budget. Now Sheffield City Council is as acknowledging the success of Self Directed Support so far and is making sure that it is more widely available. Currently just less than eight per cent of the total number of people receiving support from adults’ services have a personal budget. Self Directed Support will be available to all new and existing service users from August this year. Leslie Smith has seen huge changes for the better in her son, Christopher, since he was given a personal budget. Aged 20, Christopher has ADHD, epilepsy, an undiagnosed genetic condition and is also on the autistic spectrum. The family became concerned about Christopher’s long term prospects when the time came for him to leave school a year ago. Initially sceptical about personal budgets because of the process she had to go through, Leslie now believes it has been life changing for Christopher and built his confidence. He is now given sums of money for his health care, his social care, and his education and training, and can choose how he spends his money. Christopher now has support to go to college three days a week, and spends two days a week at The Dairy, an initiative run by Spectrum Social Care, where he takes part in gardening, crafts and other activities. Leslie says: “Christopher’s adult life is now fantastic – he is at college and really enjoying it. He has a great time, and I now know that when we’re not here he will be OK.” Councillor Steve Ayris, Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for Independent and Healthy Living, says: “We want to make sure that everyone receiving adult social care has as much control over their life as possible. People are already using their personal budgets to arrange very individual and innovative types of support that work for them. We hope that many more people will take advantage of the flexibility offered by this system.”

People in Sheffield are being invited to help to shape future audiology (hearing) services in the city by giving their views on new proposals. NHS Sheffield is proposing to provide audiology services at community locations across the city - meaning that patients would no longer have to visit the hospital for routine procedures such as hearing tests and hearing aid repairs. Anyone is able to comment on the proposals, regardless of whether or not they have accessed audiology services in the city. People will be able to give their views until 31st August. To take part visit www.sheffield. nhs.uk/consultations/audiology call Freephone 0800 085 7539, or email: pals.manager@sheffieldpct.nhs.uk
The South Rotherham and Sheffield Bus Vision is being developed by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and with Sheffield City Council and they would like to hear views from local residents, businesses and the travelling public about our specific proposals. Their main aim is to improve access to jobs, schools, hospitals and leisure activities to cope with the growing demand created by future investment and new job opportunities. The plans also include introducing a simplified ‘smartcard’ fare system across the network. These new developments will enable bus services to run across South Rotherham and Sheffield more efficiently, making bus travel a much more attractive, accessible and more enjoyable experience for everyone. They want to ensure that we get these measures right, and would like to give you the opportunity to read this information and provide your feedback. Feedback can be given online at http://www.busvision. co.uk/

T: 0114 248 4353 www.mosboroughhall.co.uk Summertime slimming made extra easy! A weight loss expert in Eckington is warning that holidays can be one of the riskiest times for family weight gain. Her advice comes after an online survey of nearly 1,000 slimmer’s revealed that nearly a quarter of them find summer the most challenging time to lose weight and one fifth (22%) report gaining more than a stone (6kg) over the summer. Lynne Riley who runs the Eckington Slimming World group says: “Summer is one of the most testing times for slimmer’s it can be really difficult to stay on track when normal routines go out of the window because of holidays away from home and the kids off school. Slimmer’s find that eating out on days away with the kids can be difficult too. Just keeping the family occupied, fed and active over the school holidays can be stressful for many mums and dads.” In the survey Slimming World asked more than
1,000 people what their greatest seasonal challenges were when trying to lose weight.
Those who found summer the most challenging time of year reported the biggest trials were: • Going on holiday (54%) • Eating out at restaurants and cafes (35%) • BBQs in the garden (29%) • Having more days out (28%) • Spending more time with children (15%). Rising obesity is a growing concern for public health authorities. More than one million children under 16 in the UK are now classified as obese as a result of changing eating habits and less active lifestyles. Making small, easy changes like swapping white bread for wholemeal bread and snacking regularly on fruit and yogurt rather than chocolate and ice cream can make a big difference.
Finding ways of sharing more healthy family meals and becoming more active and getting out with the kids can help to avoid weight gain too. “Our members are already doing something to manage their weight and they can become quite desperate when, having worked hard on their weight loss campaign all year, their efforts are undone by holidays,” says Lynne. “So this summer we’re offering a special slimming summer success package with plenty of hints and tips and great group support to help slimmer’s protect their weight loss, enjoy quality time with the family and stay on track on their slimming journey, whatever their holiday destination.” Anyone who would like to find out more about healthy living for families this summer can contact Lynne on 01246 435282 or come along to the Slimming World group at Eckington Civic Centre on Wednesday at 5.00pm Or 7.00pm. To find out more about Slimming World or to find your nearest group visit www.slimmingworld.com or call 0844 8978000.

Festive Fun Russell Cavanagh on the Edinburgh experience
Scots returning to Edinburgh would be ashamed. Beggars (indigenous and from abroad) have proliferated there since the mid-1990s; its city fathers apparently uncaring that this international jewel in Scotland’s crown is visibly disgraced. Yet this beautiful city – built on seven hills like Lisbon, Rome and indeed Sheffield – still maintains many enduring, positive qualities. And it’s not always about the Castle, Holyrood or the Royal Mile running between them. Edinburgh is fundamentally about places to eat, drink and be entertained; hardly surprising given its reputation as a tourist draw. The family-run “City Restaurant” at Surgeon’s Hall (up “The Bridges”) serves fabulous all-day breakfasts that include haggis alongside traditional sausages, bacon, eggs, beans, etc. A real Edinburgh chip shop on the Grassmarket offers deep-fried haggis/ white pudding/ smoked sausage/ pies/ black pudding/haddock and more (tip: try the gorgeous thin brown sauce that’s available only in east coast Scottish chippies!). Fans of Sheffield Showroom Cinema’s cafe-bar should feel at ease when visiting the Filmhouse on Lothian Road. An independent cinema, celebrating its 25th anniversary throughout August, the Filmhouse shows less-mainstream cinema and provides a popular place to eat and meet before a film. Despite slightly limited menus, food quality is good (lasagne is highly recommended). Lore has it that author Irvine Welsh used to visit for many an hour with pencil and notebook. Authentic pubs include Beehive Inn (Grassmarket) and the Royal Oak (traditional pub on Infirmary Street hosting live folk music nightly). There’s even a literary pub tour exploring the drinking habits of Scottish writers ancient and modern. The Festivals Around August each year, Edinburgh’s pavements overflow with tourists, street-performers and international artistes performing or promoting their shows in one or other of several international festivals coinciding that month. Edinburgh therefore remains a great draw for tourists from across the globe. With the International Film Festival 2010 just finished, having been moved forward to July in
01909 01909 770065 770065
recent years, there remain several festivals still to run throughout August and into September. The Jazz Festival lasts until Sunday August 8 and stars include Acker Bilk, Chris Barber, Peter Green, Brian Auger, Curtis Stigers, Carol Kidd amongst many others. Superb local performers also attend this popular week and each represents the highest quality. Fringe Festival attractions include some of the best (and worst!) acts playing venues ranging from small theatres down to pokey church halls. Die-hards can see several shows daily as performers share thousands of timetabled spaces. Classical ensemble recitals. storytelling, promenade theatre, tragic plays, stand-up comedy, folk or latin music concerts – just a small part of the broad menu available. Running 6 – 30 August, “the Fringe” long ago overtook the main International Festival in terms of size. And the main Edinburgh International Festival is certainly a more formal affair than the Fringe experience with perhaps more highbrow offerings. This year, the Usher Hall hosts contemporary classical music by Alaskan composer John Adams - performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra with the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. There’s also more mainstream Mozart, Puccini, Ravel and Purcell programmes scheduled. Kronos Quartet, pianist Melvyn Tan, Scottish National Jazz Orchestra – each count among dozens of international performers appearing at this great institution. Fans of dance, ballet, and top-flight theatre won’t be disappointed either. Dates are 13 August – 5 September.. Writing workshops, kids’ activities, famous writers discussing their works - all come together for the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Unfolding across 14 – 30 August, this huge-scale event is a must for more cerebral tourists. And there’s also the ethnic MELA festival (6 – 8 August) and the extravagant spectacle of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (6 – 28 August). A stunning fireworks display from the Castle with a live concert marks the official Festival finish on 5 September (9:00pm – 10:45pm). Get free views from Calton Hill, the Mound or from Inverleith Park. Alternatively, pay to hear the Scottish Chamber Orchestra live - broadcast on radio - in the Ross Bandstand (Princes Street Gardens) underneath an explosive night sky! Finally, although festival accommodation tends to be at a premium, an internet search reveals several agencies that should still be able to locate somewhere suiting most pockets. If only once in a lifetime, visit Edinburgh to enjoy some real culture. In Association with
Right; it appears that I have been recently duped and I’d like to put the record straight. A couple of weeks ago I went to the ‘Go-Fishing show’ held at Cudmore fisheries in Staffordshire and met the team from www.intofish.com a new social networking site for anglers. I mentioned the fact that a certain Matt Hayes was also a new member of the site which it seems wasn’t strictly true! Company directors of Intofish, Shaun Vernon and Paul Hammond have asked me to point out that there is in fact an imposter claiming to be the celebrity angler, which is apparently more common than I thought.... (Why?) Both Matt Hayes and Angling Times are currently investigating the incident, so I’m happy to put the record straight. The intofish website does however continue to increase its membership, and the opportunity to log your catches in a diary format and share your favourite venues throughout the world means that the site will just keep getting bigger! See what you can add by visiting www.intofish.com and joining for free. Bennett’s of Sheffield have yet another great offer for readers of Angler’s Corner; you can pick up the fantastic 13ft Daiwa ‘Meanstreak’ waggler rod for the reduced price of £39.99 and get it POST FREE if you contact them and quote DW215M. For top brand tackle at bargain basement prices, nip into the shop on Stanley Street and speak to the team, or check out www.bosfish.co.uk and see what you can pick up from their massive product stock. Reece Cooper was the most recent winner of the junior angler picture prize. Sadly, due to a mix up with parcel returns at Parson Cross shop ‘Nitrobaits’, the prize wasn’t dispatched as soon as it should have been. I’d like to thank Mark Oakes at ‘Nitrobaits’ who sorted it out and added extra prizes to the superb ‘Nitrobaits’ bait range for a very happy Reece. I would also like to add that I was extremely impressed to receive a ‘thank you’ call from 8 year old Reece
himself who contacted me shortly afterwards to say how happy he was with his booty! Thanks for the call, I appreciated it very much and hope you catch loads more fish with your ‘Nitrobaits’ prize package. If you are an angler under 16 years old, why not send in your fishy photos for a chance to win some great prizes? My fishing this week (I’ve had a week off work) has consisted of a blank session on the River Severn at Shrewsbury, several hours up various trees looking for a fabled 40lb common on a free fishing pit, (I saw it, but only when someone else caught it.... shhhh!) and a few hours after carp on a club water near Knutsford. I blame the weather; angling has been tough over the past few days and I can only put it down to the downpours of rain that have crossed the country. (It can’t be my angling surely?!) I did manage one fish of just 17 ½ lbs when all others failed to catch, so I suppose I should be happy with that. Contact me on 07807034164 or clint597@btinternet. com to share your news and catches!

King George Report and Glorious Goodwood Preview HORSE RACING by Timelord
Harbinger put up simply the most breathtaking display in a Group 1 that I have ever witnessed in running away with the King George last Saturday. In doing so he beat the course record for the race and thrashed his rivals by an amazing 11 lengths. This was an awesome display of talent and puts him in line for a crack at the Arc de Triomphe. It is no surprise that he is now being compared to Sea The Stars. I knew he was good from his performance in the Hardwicke but I never expected anything of this calibre from him. He beat my selections (Youmzain and Cape Blanco) well and truly. There were no hard luck stories that I could detect and Cape Blanco confirmed his Dante form with Workforce. The result also confirmed (for now) my suspicion that the English Derby form is likely to prove unreliable. Cape Blanco put up another pretty impressive show in finishing second and was easily second best. Youmzain continued his good run of performances in Group 1 races with another solid display but the withdrawal of runners
spoilt the each way angle on him as he finished third. This week sees the Galway Festival in Ireland and the “Glorious” meeting at Goodwood get under way. Goodwood is always a good meeting with lots of very competitive races. In some ways it is better to watch than to punt as winner finding is often difficult but here are my selections for the races from Wednesday to Saturday: Wednesday 2.10 Markington 2.45 Major Art 3.25 Premio Loco 4.00 Mister Angry 4.35 Royalorien 5.10 Agony And Ecstasy 5.45 Thebes Thursday 2.10 Capponi 2.45 Moorhouse Lad 3.25 The Betchworth Kid 4.00 Gallic Star 4.35 Why 5.10 Gene Autry 5.45 Piazza San Pietro Friday 2.10 Manighar 2.45 Perfect Flight 3.25 Collateral Damage 4.00 Satin Love 4.35 Falkland Flyer 5.15 Tropical Paradise 5.45 Perfect Blossom Saturday 1.55 Layla’s Dancer 2.30 Treadwell 3.05 Rosanara 3.40 Castles In The Air 4.15 Swift Alhaarth 4.50 Majestic Myles 5.25 Carlitos Spirit

NYRON IS A BLADE
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk United have made a significant step forward in their team rebuilding with the capture of signing Nyron Nosworthy on a season-long loan. The Sunderland defender is back at Bramall Lane for the entirety of the 2010/11 campaign - without a recall clause for the Premiership outfit. Nosworthy was popular during his 19-game loan spell with the Blades last season, offering solid performances in a variety of position across the back line, and has been a target of boss Kevin Blackwell throughout the summer: “We made no secret of the fact that we were looking for defenders, and that Nyron was a high priority of ours. “Whilst we were - and still are monitoring other alternatives, he fits the bill in every way, not least because we know what he can do and he fitted in well. “He is a strong individual with bags of experience and he desperately wants to do well for this club because he knows the potential we have. “I want a squad that has character and leadership and Nyron, along with Morgan, Cresswell and Montgomery who have all re-

signed, brings that to the table.” Chief Executive Trevor Birch added: “The manager has made it plain that getting Nyron was essential to his plans and I am delighted that we have succeeded in bringing him in because there were other clubs interested. “I think it has been significant that his team-mates at Bramall Lane were also hoping he would return because they recognised his value as an individual and to the team. “His signing will help Kevin assemble the solid, dependable squad he is looking for and it demonstrates that we intend to be a serious player in the promotion race. “We are pulling out all the stops to make this a campaign to remember and hope that fans respond by turning up in numbers every week to support us. “An average of around 25,000 at home games last season was a big factor in Nyron signing for us and a repeat would be tremendous.”
TC AND SABELLA UNITED LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
Tony Currie is looking forward to seeing the man who virtually followed him to Sheffield United and then to Leeds United thirty plus years ago. Blades legend TC left the Blades in 1976 and two years later his ‘replacement’ as the team’s most creative talent arrived in the guise of Alex Sabella, a gifted 23 year old from Argentina. Sabella went on to play for the Blades for two seasons, eventually moving to Elland Road as Currie had done although by then TC had moved on to QPR. The two are set to meet on Sunday after the Bramall Lane Open Day when Sabella’s Estudiantes team - Copa Libertadores champions - play the Blades in a friendly at 4pm. “We never played in the same team because of circumstances but I obviously watched his career with interest, and played against him at the Lane when United met Leeds in a League cup-tie in October 1978. “He was a very gifted player and hadn’t been there long at that time but he already stood out as a real talent. Unitedites - like fans of most teams - love to be enter-
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday interim chairman Howard Wilkinson has moved to allay concerns over the club’s financial situation following news that SWFC have been issued with a winding up order by HMRC. He exclusively told swfc.co.uk: “I fully understand the news reports this morning will worry a number of our supporters but I am assured that this matter will be dealt with before the court date is due. “We all recognise that the club is in need of long term investment. Nick Parker has been working
very hard on this, with discussions with major investors progressing. I still believe that Sheffield Wednesday has a very strong future in the hands of the right custodians.” Wilkinson, who was appointed interim chairman back in May, also expanded on his role at the club and his current situation moving forward. He said: “”Given the end of season relegation, the resignation of the previous chairman and the perceived instability at the time, I agreed to step into the breach as interim chairman. “My focus was to work with our excellent manager and engage in a busy period of trying to build a squad that is capable of challenging for promotion to the Championship. I am proud of the work that Alan and his team have carried out, with my assistance as appropriate, in attracting eight new players to Hillsborough. Getting the football operations of the club right remains the most important element of what we do.
Championship in that you have to work hard to win football matches. We’ll be doing that this season and the gaffer will be tuning us in for every game so we will be ready for it.”
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Owls striker Neil Mellor was disappointed to finish on the losing side on Saturday but insists Wednesday will be ready for the new season on 7 August. The Owls went down 1-0 against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park but Mellor believes the important thing at this stage is fitness levels and, on that front, things are coming together. He told Wednesday Player after the match: “I feel personally and as a team we’re getting there.
“It’s disappointing to get beat in any game, not just pre-season, but it’s about getting fit for the new season and being right come 7 August when it kicks-off. “These pre-season games are about making sure each player gets their fitness. Until we get nearer to the first game of the season we won’t know which team the manager will line-up with.” The loan striker is out to stake his claim for a place in the side in the season-opener against Dagenham & Redbridge but faces stiff competition in that department. He went on: “As a forward you want to score goals and obviously the more goals you get the more likely you are to be in the team. “We’ve not got as many as we would like but come the start of the season we’ll be raring to go and those goals will come. “I know League One is like the the Kop, said: “It was fascinating to watch the players train, to see how in shape they all are and how hard the manager works them. “It was absolutely brilliant to meet Alan Irvine in person, he was such a gentleman, taking time to shake everyone’s hand and chat with us.” Thrilled Ben said: “I have always travelled to Owls matches with Granddad so it was so nice to come here with him too.” The lucky recipient of the very first replica 10/11 away shirt to be signed by the squad, Glynn Wright, attended the training session with daughter and passionate fan Sam. Glynn, who has been coming to matches for 32 years and regularly brings daughter Sam, said: “I was really pleased when Sheffield Wednesday called me to say I had won, I didn’t even know I’d been entered into a draw to win the
prize. The shirt is absolutely great I’m hoping to have it framed and what a privilege to receive it from Alan Irvine himself.” For more chances to win, you can become a Sheffield Wednesday club member. More details available at: http://www.swfc.co.uk/ page/Membership

FANS ENJOY ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Two Sheffield Wednesday supporters enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience after being names the winners of ‘money can’t buy prizes’ after the club held a draw exclusively for 2010/11 season tick holder. Lucky winners Terry Heeley and Glynn Wright had the rare opportunity to see their lifelong team in action at the Middlewood Road training ground. Terry, who brought his grandson Ben Swales, 15, along to the ground, attended his first match when he was just 10-years-old and is now a season ticket holder on
“Of course, the club has also been undergoing a huge internal change following relegation. Nick has been having to shape a business that has lost some 20 per cent of its annual revenue. Undoubtedly, cash flow has been an issue over the summer months but Nick and Bob Grierson have been working hard with the Co-op Bank to find practical solutions to our problems. “As for my future, I am in discussions with the Board of the club and with the League Managers Association about possibly continuing as chairman post the start of the season. Irrespective of my position at the club, I have seen enough in the past few months to believe that our manager and Chief Executive will make the right decisions for this club moving forward.”

FANS INVITED TO UNVEILING LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
Sheffield United fans have the chance to watch the unveiling of the specially commissioned statues to honour club legends Derek Dooley and Joe Shaw. The statues will be officially unveiled by the widows of Derek and Joe, Sylvia Dooley and Hettie Shaw, at Bramall Lane at 7.30pm on Friday 30th July and Blades supporters are invited to be a part of the proceedings. United have installed the statues of former Chairman Derek and Joe Shaw, the centre half who holds the record number of appearances for the club, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the Blades. The impressive bronze figures arrived on Monday afternoon and were installed and fixed on to the concrete plinths that have been in place for the last few weeks. The statues are covered and will remain so until Friday’s ceremonial unveiling when sculptor Paul Vanstone, who supervised the installation, will also be present. Supporters can watch the unveiling for free or attend the Legends Supper, which includes entry to the VIP area and a light supper served in Legends of the Lane museum for just £15. Simon Argall, United’s operations director, said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for our supporters to come and watch the unveiling of the statues and pay tribute to two of the club’s biggest legends. “We know that both Derek and Joe enjoyed a special place in the hearts of Blades fans and the statues will provide a lasting memory to their legacy for many years to come.” The unveilings add to a highprofile build-up to United’s new season. On Sunday 1st August the club will be in action against world-renowned Estudiantes in a pre-season friendly at Bramall Lane. Currently managed by former Blades midfielder Alex Sabella, the Argentine giants, complete Kevin Blackwell’s preparations for the new season in a fixture that will bring the curtain down on United’s Open Day, planned for the same day. For reservations for the £15 Legends Supper package contact the club’s Commercial Department on 0871 663 2462.
