Joanne Catherall and Susan Sulley, who became the iconic trio that fronted the band as it went onto world wide acclaim. Sheffield in the 1970s definately didn’t guarantee a good time for all of its citizens. Peter Stringfellow failed to emulate his sixties success that had produced legendary local venues The Mojo and Black Cat. He ended up packing his bags for Leeds after unruly punters became a regular feature of his new Penthouse on Dixon Lane. Neil Anderson, author of ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield’ said: “The enthusiasm of people for the time has been infectious. I’ve interviewed former staff of venues that include Club Fiesta, Buccaneer, Hofbrauhaus, Top Rank, Josephine’s, Black Swan, Baileys, Sheffield City Hall and more. “As well as the scores of people that contacted me who still reside in the area I’ve also spoke to people that live hundreds of miles away, in one case thousands.

Judi Emm, now an author based in Canada and a former Sheffielder, sent me some amazing stuff from her time working as a cocktail waitress in Club Fiesta.” The amount of venue Sheffield boasted in the 1970s dwarfs anything the city has today: cabaret clubs, discotheques, pubs, restaurants, Working Men’s Clubs, live music venues and even a 24 hour Wimpy on Fargate, one of the city centre’s main shopping streets. Neil Anderson, who wrote the best-selling ‘Take It To The Limit’ book about the city’s iconic Limit club, said: “I think the 1970s regularly gets a raw deal. All you ever hear about is flared trousers and Abba when the reality is far different. “It was one of the coolest and most iconic decades of the 20th century that produced some of the most stark twists in youth culture ever experienced, from glam rock at the start of the era to disco via the scene that changed everything – punk rock.” ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide

to 1970s Sheffield’ also vividly portrays the stark cultural differences that have taken place in the last 40 years. Neil Anderson said: “It’s fair to say the champions of political correctness didn’t rear their heads much in the 1970s. “Dinner time entertainment was a far cry from the sandwich and quick wander round town most city centre workers make do with in 2010. Despite the rise of the feminist movement you could still bag three strippers, topless go-go dancer and free beer for only 5p at Hofbrauhaus on Eyre Street six lunchtimes a week. “Women were praised for undertaking marathon drinking sessions in the name of charity, tales of wife swapping parties in Dronfield were front page news and drinking and driving was publically acceptable behaviour.” To purchase this fine book or if you want any more information on Neil’s publications please visit www. acmretro.com

SEVENTIES ʻDIRTY STOP OUTʼSʼ HAD IT ALL AND MORE IN SHEFFIELD... Many view it as the decade that style forgot, but a new book about Sheffield nightlife in the 1970s is set to prove it was one of the most exciting and influential periods in the country’s history. ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield’ lifts the lid on the era that saw the city boast the largest nightclub in Europe in the shape of Club Fiesta. , The biggest names on the planet performed up close and personal with Sheffield audiences, with only a chicken-ina-basket meal separating the likes of The Jacksons, Stevie Wonder and Tommy Cooper with spellbound fans. It was the venue that helped launch the career of Sheffield’s own Marti Caine. Local boy Tony Christie, the city’s only hit maker of the era, was also a regular performer. Across town was the renowned Crazy Daizy, the venue that became legendary as the place Human League singer Phil Oakey first spotted future band members

COPLEY’S COLUMN The ridiculous decision to release the vilest mass murderer in British legal history, Megrahi, the only person convicted for the Lockerbie bombings, is now being highlighted. The decision, made by the Scottish executive, was on compassionate grounds, as he had supposedly only three months to live. Guess what, a year on and the murderous bastard is still alive. Anyone found guilty of heinous crimes should rot in jail for the rest of their lives. Commonsense did prevail in the case of Yorkshire ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, who has been advised, quite rightly, by a judge that he must remain in prison until he dies. I can’t get over the cheek of the man, thinking that anyone would release him with his track record. I have much sympathy for the unfortunate holidaymakers who are suffering as a result of the crash of holiday firm, Goldtrail, many stuck in Greece and Turkey. However, this just goes to show that the cheapest is not always the best option. My holiday in Majorca is not cheap by any means, but as it was booked through Thomas Cook, I am at present sunning myself in the secure knowledge that everything will be as advertised. Having booked three holidays this year, Majorca, Tenerife and Cancuin in Mexico, I took out travel insurance, world wide, for

twelve months and was amazed that it cost only fifty five pounds, so a useful tip is if you are intending to travel more than once in the year, insure both at the same time rather than two individual policies. I deliberately never get involved in racial matters, but I feel I have to bring p the cases of Muslim bus and taxi drivers refusing to allow guide dogs for the blind on their buses or cabs. Apparently, the reason for this is that Islam teaches that a dog’s saliva is impure. What a lot of old codswallop. Offenders of this nature should be publicly stoned to death. I have done many things I should not have done in my life, from raiding orchards as a kid and drinking after time as an adult, but one thing I have steered away from is drink driving, as if driving a car with one arm is not hard enough sober. In New York, anybody convicted of driving under the influence will have a gadget fixed to their car with a nozzle, into which they will have to blow before inserting the ignition key. If they are over the limit and unfit to drive. Whilst driving, they will have to endure further self breathalyser tests to ensure that they are not drinking whilst actually driving. Drivers who fail will have their ignition locked, the horn will sound repeatedly and a deafening

That would seem to sort out the problem. Secure indoor airport parking is now very popular, as opposed to using taxis and I was much encouraged to hear that a company offering this service got ninety per cent of their business through advertising with this newspaper. This really exemplifies the power of advertising. I am often accused, not by the Mercury I might add, of giving some people a bit of a freebie by mentioning them in this column, and my answer to that is it does no harm giving people a helping hand in these times of economic strife, particularly if there is some interest to be gained In this vein, I went to view the refurbishment at the Victoria in Dronfield. This is a bold move by Punch Taverns, reportedly not over flush with cash themselves, and shows much confidence in the ability of landlord, Chris Clarke. Chris is new to the licensing trade, and his enthusiasm for the job is infectious. I wish him all the best, particularly as the pub is in walking distance from my house. He very wisely booked top local band Junkyard Dog for his open day party night. Chris intends to keep a high standard of entertainment at the pub and I understand that an appearance by the lovely Sunny Daye is imminent.

BAU BAU CRISIS CENTRE! BLACK SHEEP! The Bauhaus frontman, known as ‘The Godfather of Goth’ will be playing 50% Bauhaus material, when he plays live in Sheffield at the Corp on the 6th this week. Peter Murphy is an English gothic rock vocalist. He was the vocalist of the rock group Bauhaus, and later went on to release a number of solo albums, such as Deep and Love Hysteria. Thin, with prominent cheekbones, a rich Baritone voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, Murphy is often called the “Godfather of Goth.” New York, NY - Iconic Bauhaus main man PETER MURPHY makes a central cameo appearance as ‘The Cold One’ in Eclipse, the most recent instalment of the Twilight series. Murphy’s last film appearance was in 1983 when Bauhaus performed “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” in the opening credit sequence of Tony Scott’s vampire thriller The Hunger starring David Bowie. As a bookend to the now-infamous “Bela” performance, Peter felt that a cameo in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was too good to turn down. “Who else could have and should have done it?” he laughs. “It was really lovely and smart of David Slade to ask me…I was honoured, actually.” Murphy’s cinematic role marks the commencement of an eventful rest of the year for the artist, who is now on a world-wide tour named the “Dirty Dirt Tour” and is adding the finishing touches to his new studio album NINTH, due any time now. Currently living between Istanbul and New York City, the famed post-punk innovator, sonic alchemist and celebrated founding father of the Gothic movement, has been working on several exciting new projects over the past 2 years, most importantly his long-awaited ninth studio album aptly-titled, Ninth. “I have had my Ninth album ready to go for a while now,” Peter explains. “I’ve been playing it live, alongside Bauhaus classics and my own hits, long before the official release and it’s added more stardust to the long shelf life of songs I have under my belt.” Most recently, Peter ignited a new generation of fans while appearing with Trent Reznor during his 2009 final Nine Inch Nails tour. Famously descending on a chain from the rafters upside down (like the theatrical genius he is) at New York’s Terminal 5, Peter joined Reznor and his band to perform The Downward Spiral favourite “Reptile,” along with Murphy’s “Strange Kind Of Love,” Bauhaus’ “Kick in the Eye,” Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” and Pere Ubu’s “Final Solution.” Murphy’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” has also been a recent staple of live sets. Formed in 1979, Liverpool New Wave band China Crisis have produced six full length albums and have a fan base spanning Western Europe, Australia and the Americas. Sharing an affection for Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, David Bowie, and Brian Eno. Daly and Lundon played with various Knowsley post-punk groups. Daly then spent time tinkering with synthesisers and a drum machine. Along with Lundon, Daly began writing songs. The pair eventually asked drummer and percussionist Dave Reilly to join them, and in 1982 they released their debut single “African and White” as China Crisis on the independent record label, Inevitable. In June 1982, they supported the former Television guitarist, Tom Verlaine, at London’s Venue. The band was signed to Virgin Records and recorded their debut album, Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It’s Fun To Entertain, which was released in December 1982. A re-release of “African & White” became China Crisis’ first hit in the UK, reaching No 45 in the UK

Queens of Door time: 6.30pm, Show time: TBC the Stone Age developed a style of riff-oriented, heavy music which has been described by lead singer Josh Homme as “robot rock”, saying that he “wanted to create a heavy sound based on a solid jam, and just pound it into your head”. 2000’s Rated R featured a myriad of musicians familiar with Homme and Oliveri’s work and “crew” of sorts: among others, drummers Nick Lucero and Gene Trautmann, guitarists Dave Catching, Brendon McNichol, and Chris Goss contributed, and even Judas Priest frontman Rob for you all: £1.50 DOUBLE VODKA Halford, recording next door, MIXER B4 12, £1.60 RUM + COKE, stepped in for a guest spot on £2 BOMBS,£1.60 BEER, DOUBLE “Feel Good Hit of the SumVODKA ENERGY £2.50 after 12 mer”. The album garnered positive reviews and received Doors 10.30pm - Curfew 3.00am Entry £4.00 a lot more attention than their Tanz Die ReVolution! debut, despite the fact that the lyrics to “Feel Good Hit of the Summer” were deemed by mega-retailer Wal-Mart to promote drug use, almost causing the record to get pulled CLUB LIGHTING from store shelves, SOUND SYSTEMS cant blame ‘em I suppose when the

opening tracks chorus is “Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol…..Cocaine”. The success of the record also earned the band notable opening slots with The Smashing Pumpkins, the Foo Fighters, Hole, and a place at Ozzfest 2000. It’s probably one of the most original rock records out there still today. “The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret” is really the track that sets out the feel of the rest of the album. Intelligent lyrics, great vocals, grinding guitars and a great chorus. Songs such as “Better Living through Chemistry” probably helped Wal-Marts cause, but songs such as “Auto- Pilot” and “Lightning Song” see the band do a Stone Age version of ballads (they’re not really ballads as in a Whitney Houston ballad you understand, but a ballad done in their own special way, and its intriguing). Probably the best two songs on the whole album though are “Monsters in the Parasol” it features a stunning guitar riff and a chorus and vocal to die for. The other is the hilarious “Quick and to the Pointless” the title sums it up perfectly running at only 1 minute and 44 seconds. Starting with “Yeah yeah yeah” female vocals and is the story of an older guy spotting a girl walking across the street and thinking “Wow………… but she’s too young and I’m too old” It’s a brilliant and funny tune, worth checking out. This band is hugely important in rock circles but are able to be not too heavy to put off the rockless listener, there is no other band like them and I applaud them for that. This is a classic and it’s a pleasure to see it re-released. With this you also get all the b-sides and their 9 song appearance at the Reading Festival in 2000, bargain!

Friction may have entered a tie. Perhaps there have been patterns working away that have never really fully surfaced. However, the arrival of Venus in your partnership sector can work wonders. Perhaps both of you need to be a little kinder. Why not make the first move Aries? Call for more…

After last week’s bumps and scrapes of the Mars/Saturn conjunction Venus can help to soothe things. You can also add your raw sex appeal, the smoother dimension for which you are so known. If you are solo, the rest of this month promises to be a time of exploration and saucy fun! Call for more…

Be gentle with yourself. If you’ve been flat out recently, this is an ideal time to pause, reflect and pamper. Your body will love being made a fuss of, and remember there is a human aspect to this, sharing how you feel, and having a therapist care for you can be nurturing. Call for more advice…

If there have been emotional scenes, it may be because someone is finding it difficult to say how they feel. Don’t try to force things into the open, but if you can both respect there may be emotions that one of you finds hard to understand, it will help to get the dialogue moving. Call for more…

Solo? The next month can change all that with someone entering your situation, and perhaps even sweeping you off your feet. Solo and happy to indulge yourself and have fun? There is unlikely to be a lack of admirers. If there’ve been harsh words, do something to reignite the magic. Call for more…

The friction that crept into last week can be resolved through taking a step back and feeling less threatened if others and in particular friends, have different ideas. If you can just bite your tongue and embrace diplomacy, there can be a rapid about turn in relations. Call now for more advice…

Have you been a bit too quick to take offence recently? If so this week offers an ideal opportunity to extend the olive branch. Then again it can be someone close who seems more affectionate once again. There can be a lot to look forward to socially for the rest of this month. Call for more news…

If you and the boss or a colleague, have been finding it difficult to see eye to eye, why not call a truce and try to improve things? With a little more understanding on both sides, even if you can’t be bosom buddies, mutual respect can forge a more harmonious tie. Call for your in-depth forecast…

Not only will your conversation take on new energy, you can find yourself surrounded, with folk keen to be part of your gang. This can mean greater interaction with those in your everyday life or a flirty link developing with someone you see locally. Call me now Leo for your love scope in full…

Someone can capture your attention, but this is unlikely to be a person, who is, well…ordinary. No, now you can find yourself fascinated by differences, seeing them as a great way to expand your world and your thinking. A salsa class can also prove intriguing. Call for your in-depth forecast…

Look to bring comfort into your life. You may not need oodles of money to do this either. However, a fair amount of imagination can help. You may also start to think more about food and diet. If you have a particular love for rich, sticky stuff, you may find your resolve starts to waver. Call for more..

The look of lust can emerge from now, as Venus burrows its way into the steamiest part of your situation. It can also take the edge off the restrictive powers of Saturn. The suggestion here is that if one relationship has come to a close, it can be replaced by something more valuable. Call for more…

MYSTERY SOLVED CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker

An update on last week – Neil Tomlinson tells me he has now tracked down virtually all the original members of the “Internationals” – the first band I ever saw. As I have mentioned, Neil, who was the lead singer, set up the highly successful “Was Is” agency which I am featuring this month. Sax player Phil Pilsworth now owns Freestyle UK, one of the biggest manufacturers of flight cases in the country. Jem Taylor, formerly the bass player, makes a living in Benidorm as a successful comedian, whilst guitarist Kev Simons is still working locally as one half of the duo “Motor City.” Mike Dennett recently returned to Sheffield after a long spell in Alcudia, and the only mystery is the whereabouts of Russ Dennett, who many readers will remember left the Internationals to join Human League, is believed to be somewhere in the Dronfield area. Great memories of a fantastic band!

AN EVENING WITH WATCH OUT FOR PETER IDRIS STANNINGTON REVIEW by Jamie Pinder

Peter is the latest link in a long family chain of natural spirit communicators. His extensive range of skills is impressive and makes for an interesting evening. We went along to his show at The Duke of York, Eckington for what turned out to be a memorable evening. Peter delivered messages to many in the audience which were both accurate and unique to each person! The evening was made more enjoyable by Peters natural wit and charisma which lightened the mood and gave another dimension to an emotional and interesting evening. Peters exceptional ability to access his client’s loved ones, either their family or friends, which has helped countless people. He has enabled those people to realise that we are never alone, and that guidance and love is only ever a thought away. Peter is also very skilled in the art of Tarot reading, which he has also done for a number of years. He is available for bookings for various events and for private readings. For more information, please contact Peter Idris on peter@peteridris.com or telephone him on 07502 010922

AGENCY OF THE MONTH - “Was Is” CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker

After delighting Clubland audiences since the 70’s in bands such as “The Internationals”, and “The Gutter Band”, Neil decided to set up his own agency. I called in for a chat and a catch up. Q: When did the Was Is agency begin? A: Officially in April 2000 when I reached my 40th birthday although I had dabbled a bit for the 12 months before. Q: What made you think about starting an agency? A: It felt like a logical step having been involved in club-land ever since 1976 and my first band “Local Anaesthetic” a punk covers band. I love my job and love being part of a great tradition.

the acts I look after to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes in their career. Q: A famous quote? A: One man when I was in the Internationals collared me in the toilets at Bolton on Dearne WMC & told me “you’re good, but your crap” That’s going on my gravestone. Q: Do you have any funny stories? A: In my reckless days I have been known to go slightly over the top and my daftest stunt was climbing on top of my pa stack, into a brand new hung ceiling at Edlington Club and climbing right to the other end popping my head out over the bar and ordering a beer – it didn’t go down too well with the committee!

Q: Can you remember the first acts you booked?

Q: How do you see the “Was Is” stable developing in the future?

A: The first “Was Is” shows we actively promoted were Heavenly, Space Cadets, The Groovies and at the time I was still in the Gutterband too.

A: We are always looking for bands – right now we would really like to find a boy band. We do take on duos and trios but tend to specialize in bands having been a band man myself since the 70’s

Q: What are you looking for in the future? A: To forge a living, and to help acts with advice & guidance so that they can be as successful as possible. I made lots of mistakes myself being in bands, so I feel I’m well qualified to guide and advise

Thanks to Neil and also to Carl who works in the office. If you do have any questions or you are thinking of getting in touch, the “Was Is” number is 01142 819475 Next week we shall be featuring the one and only Darren York.

BRASS

Every night this week on Look North there has been a great deal about 'A Symphony for Yorkshire' a symphony in 4 movements commissioned by the BBC and composed by Benjamin Till. Around 250 musicians from all over Yorkshire took part in the recording and the BBC also made a documentary to go along with the music as it was always intended to be viewed and listend to. The symphony was commissioned to be first broadcast on Yorksire Day, August 1st, and it was played on Radio Sheffield last Sunday morning on the Rony Robinson show with Mercury Managing Editor Andrew Platts reviewing it live. Sheffield should be rightly proud of it's own Stannington Brass

SWITCHING TO BEER CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT AND CUT ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, and the Beer Academy, have today come together to highlight to UK consumers that beer, when drunk in moderation, can help you lose weight, cut alcohol consumption, and more generally, help supplement a healthy lifestyle. New research released during CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court, London (August 3rd-7th) where over 500 British real ales are currently being showcased, shows that 34% of men and 29% of women incorrectly believe that beer contains more calories than other alcoholic drinks. (ICM interviewed a random sample of 2004 adults aged 18+ online between 26th-28th February 2010) Today’s new research released by CAMRA follows on from a groundbreaking report by the Beer Academy entitled ‘Beer the Natural Choice?’, and authored by Isla Whitcroft, a leading health journalist. The report is a broad, eye opening examination of the health giving properties of beer, and its composition as a natural product. In a calorie comparison of beer versus other alcoholic drinks, the report found thatHalf pint of 3.8% Bitter (284ml) 85 calories 1.1 ALCOHOLIC UNITS Medium sized glass of 12% red wine (175ml) - 119 calories 2.1 ALCOHOLIC UNITS Medium sized glass of 12% white wine (175ml) - 131 calories 2.1 ALCOHOLIC UNITS Bottle of 5% ‘alcopop’ (275ml) 179 calories 1.4 ALCOHOLIC UNITS Professor Charlie Bamforth, renowned technical brewing expert, praised today’s findings. He said: ‘For years beer has been blighted by a reputation for being more fattening than other alcoholic

Band who were asked to be part of this fantastic project. A Symphony for Yorkshire could not be complete without a brass band and Stannington can be seen on Look North this Thursday when the final movement is played.

MERCURY CLUBLAND AWARDS 2010 Voting is still open for the awards – we shall be running a special feature this month, revealing the front runners as we approach Awards Night. Don’t forget – this is being held at Crookes Club this year, on Thursday 7th October! Tickets are on sale from the Club, or the Mercury Hotline (01142 763701) and are already selling fast – so book early to avoid disappointment! drinks when in reality the exact opposite is true. The major source of calories in any alcoholic drink is the alcohol itself, and because beer is the drinks category with the lowest average alcohol content it is also lowest in calories. Beer also contains no fat or cholesterol and very few free sugars. So for someone looking to lose weight, swapping their glass of wine for a beer every day would not only reduce their weekly alcohol intake by seven units – but also cut out more calories than are burned off during a typical 30 minute jog!’ Speaking at the Great British Beer Festival, Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive, reiterated the impact of these findings. He said: ‘It is great news to see the myth of the beer belly finally laid to rest. The main message we are putting forward today is that as a low alcohol drink, beer can supplement a healthy lifestyle if consumed in a responsible manner. And as a quality product, one need only visit the Great British Beer Festival this week to see that a number of beers, whilst low in alcohol, are still packed with a fantastic amount of flavour. After all, two of the last four Champion Beer of Britain winners have been Milds, traditionally weighing in at around 3% ABV, therefore in no way does less alcohol translate into less flavour.’

RESPONSE With reference to the letter in the Mercury 28th Jul - 3rd Aug commenting on the artistes dressing rooms. I would think the one at Walkley WMC should be rated as one of the best. The room is pleasantly decorated showing memorabilia of past artistes, there are coffee and tea facilities and also a television. The artistes are always very complimentary towards all this so it would be nice to be mentioned alongside Handsworth and Southey as one of the clubs who care and make the effort. Regards Geraldine Stansall

WHATʼS YOUR CLAIM TO FAME Well I’m back again to report on two of your local club acts. The first act I went to see was a male/ female duo called CAMEO. The duo is made up of John and Gill - two talented musicians with an impressive musical background. John was originally a member of the 80’s band Grace Pool 5. He then went on the road with 60’s band The Mixtures and was also a member of the great Billy J. Kramer backing band. He played all the old festivals (older readers will remember just how popular these festivals were) and writes his own original music. Gill would perhaps be best known as a member of 80’s band Girls On Film or as a member of the all female trio Loop De Loop. She has been in various duos but is also well respected as a solo singer. Gill has also done TV work. As you can imagine when two talented artists such as John and Gill perform together the result is not to be missed. They are good all round entertainers and have an act that I wouldn’t hesitate to watch over and over again. I have heard that Gill may do some more solo work but I don’t yet know what her stage name will be. I will let you all know as soon as I find out. The next act I would like to discuss is one of my favourite female artists - the one and only Miss Rachel Rayner. Rachel first appeared on stage at the age of 6, at 12 she joined a local drama group and then trained for a number of years with a vocal coach, paying particular attention to classical music. Rachel entered a great deal of talent shows which established her as one of the greatest female solo singers performing in our clubs. It is a pleasure to hear her sing. Rachel’s act includes a variety of songs from old classics to current chart music. She has fantastic vocal ability, stage presence and interacts with the audience incredibly well. Rachel also does a significant amount of work for charity. She is a must see. I cannot go without mentioning the people who work behind the scenes - the sound engineers, the lighting engineers and the roadies who load/unload and set up all the gear for our artists. These people work extremely hard and without them there would be no show. I know what it is like to go to college and study sound and lighting effects. It is certainly not easy. I can assure you that these guys and lasses don’t get enough credit. Keep up the good work guys I do appreciate it.

MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas

Did you ever get to know someone who went on to be famous? May be you lived next door to the relative of somebody famous, or it could even be a distant family connection to royalty! Having had a lady call in to the Magic Breakfast Show who confessed to her Mum being the resident cleaner of Frank Windsor (Z Cars, Softly Softly and Life Insurance commercials), I asked this question last Friday morning. Terry lived near Brian Blessed’s Aunty, Janet from Deepcar had family connections to Michael Caine’s ex, and Alison used to live round the corner from Mike Yarwood. Do you remember him? John from Crookes remembers being at school with Joe from Def Leppard, and I also had a few calls from people who went to school with our local nightclub king Peter Stringfellow. Meanwhile, Betty from Middlewood is Peter’s cousin and recalled her Dad loaning him £10 to start his career. Apparently, he’s yet to repay the debt, so I would certainly add interest here Betty, for definite. On the Breakfast Show, the Magic Word contest also continues where we’re looking for a correct description of 80s star Howard Jones’s legendary haircut, and a big thank you for all the stories about our own hair colouring nightmares and mishaps as well. Apparently brown is the colour for this year if you’re after a new shade, and it won’t be long until all the world’s fair hair is manufactured. Yes, natural blondes could soon be confined to history since the black hair gene is increasingly dominating the world’s population. I’m clinging on with what little is left on my head though. Now off to find that commemorative carriage clock from Frank Windsor! Talk to you in the morning between 6 and 10am. Trevor

Well that’s all from me this week Happy Reading Paul (Rocky Horror show )

In Association with

The Angling Trust; what do you know about it? Who are they, and what do they do? If, like me, you spend time on the bank, see things going wrong and wonder who to contact to put it right, then the Angling Trust is something that will interest you. It’s the only single national organisation that is currently spearheading the fight for angling. AT campaign to promote conservation, angling and fish welfare across a huge spectrum of issues that are relevant to every discipline of our angling. Illegal poaching, predator control, unlawful navigation, pollution and restocking of affected waterways are just some of the multitude of tasks undertaken by the Angling Trust in support of anglers. All very worthy, but how do they assist in our area? Fish Legal is a membership offshoot which uses the law to protect anglers and take action on our behalf. Recent successes included bringing charges against Glebe Mines ltd who entered guilty pleas with regard to unlawful pollution of the Derbyshire Derwent which resulted in spawning areas being affected by sediment discharged into the river. A fine of £22000 and costs of over £16000 were awarded by the courts, and a civil claim is also being launched. In North Yorkshire, Fish Legal secured a Court Order and claimed £10000 in compensation in an action brought against a rainbow trout farm after repeated ecaspes of farmed fish into the River Wenning. Native fish in the river were put at considerable risk from disease and faced increased competition for food after farmed fish entered the waterway. The Court Order included a clause stating that should any ‘alien’ fish be found in the river within the next 10 years, then the fish farm would be liable for all costs incurred in removing them! It’s not just about having some ‘clout’ though. Angling is the number one pastime in the UK, and the Angling Trust intend to make sure it stays that way; the Angling Whole Sport Plan (2009-2013) will provide more angling coaches than ever before, all highly qualified, licensed and able to secure regional funding for further work with inexperienced anglers. Working

in partnership with the Angling Trade Asssociation (ATA) and the EA will allow countrywide promotion of the National Fishing Month which ends in August and will endeavour to get angling subjects onto the national curriculum in schools in an effort to attract more youngsters into our sport. Can you get involved and add your input? Of course you can; visit the website www.anglingtrust.net to find out more, pay your annual subscription of just £20 for adults and see what other benefits you can take advantage of. With over 14000 indivdual members and more than 1300 clubs already signed up, maybe it’s time to add your voice?? I’m still after your catch reports and the latest news from your venue, so get in touch with me at clint597@ btinternet.com and let me know your news. Send Your Local Sports News to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk Thursday This Saturday’s racing comprises Glorious Goodmainly difficult handicaps but there 2.10 Capponi 9th @ 5/1 2.45 Moorhouse Lad 8th @ 66/1 is a Group race at Newmarket, the wood Review and Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes. I The Betchworth Kid weekend preview have just considered the TV races 3.25 7th @ 50/1 HORSE RACING by Timelord

Glorious Goodwood provided its usual spectacular racing last week and, in doing so, also provided its usual difficulties in winner finding. That is unless you simply followed Richard Hughes who had an absolute dream week. Canford Cliffs was again successful in landing the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. He is a horse of high class with a very good turn of foot on good/good to firm ground and will no doubt land other major prizes as the season progresses. Unfortunately his talents are there for all to see and he is unlikely to start at my sort of price. Premio Loco ran well in defeat and seems to be progressing nicely. He finished third but the each way wasn’t landed as there were only seven runners. This happened on a couple of occasions (Major Art was the other) and it is very frustrating when withdrawals give the bookies an edge like this. My selections ran quite well without setting the world on fire. We had to wait till late on Friday to get a winner and then there were two in consecutive races. However, I am still mentally kicking myself for losing faith in my own ratings as I had Joseph Henry top rated in the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (2.45 on Friday) and it duly won at 28/1 but I had selected Perfect Flight which did not run as I thought Joseph Henry was out of form. I should know better and I am sorry for not giving you a decent priced winner here, particularly as the horse is trained by Dandy Nicholls who loves to get sprint winners here. On Saturday Rosanara was a big disappointment in the Nassau Stakes and Dandy Nicholls went on to land an impressive double by lifting the Stewards Cup with Evens and Odds. I was very impressed by Tom Dascombe’s four year old, Jonny Mudball, in this race who ran really well on the far side and was only just reeled in by the winner near the line. He looks to be a sprinter going places and should be followed in the near future.

on Saturday but have also looked at the racing on Sunday at The Curragh where there is a decent card of Group races that just might provide some value. As usual Aidan O’Brien is mob handed and has good chances (look for Johnny Murtagh’s mounts for the ones with the best chances) but he is opposed by other good trainers who themselves have realistic chances of wins with their entries. Selections: Saturday Haydock 2.20 One Scoop Or Two (N.b) 2.50 Fallen Idol, if absent Le Fazzani or Distant Memories 3.25 Magaling, if absent Plaisterer

Newmarket 2.05 Rock Soleil, been off for a long while so,f absent, Psychic Ability (beat Dandino by 4l last year) 2.35 Madany (Nap), if absent Khor Sheed 3.10 Horatio Carter, if absent Brae Hill Redcar 3.40 Talley Close, if absent Falkland Flyer Sunday The Curragh 2.45 Precious Gem, if absent Fame and Glory (also look at Choose Me at a possible huge e/w price) 3.15 Bewitched, if absent Invisible Ash 3.40 Dunboyne Express (Nap), if absent Lake Ontario 4.45 Together, if absent Seeharn Best of luck with these if you have a go. Last week’s Goodwood results: Wednesday 2.10 Markington 12th @ 17/2 2.45 Major Art 3rd @ 5/1 3.25 Premio Loco 3rd @ 17/2 4.00 Mister Angry 11th @ 22/1 4.35 Royalorien 9th (last) @ 5/1 5.10 Agony And Ecstasy 6th @ 10/3 5.45 Thebes 5th @ 6/1

There were 2 winners (at 16/1 and 15/2) returning 25.5 points to a 1 point level stake giving a small profit of 4.5 points on the 21 points invested. Not a fortune but better than a loss. Unfortunately there was a long wait for a winner, which meant that you had to keep faith, which is always difficult when there is a losing sequence. Finally, here are a few to consider for the forthcoming York Ebor Meeting: 17th August Great Voltigeur – Dancing David/ Rewilding Juddmonte International – Viscount Nelson/Cape Blanco 18th August Gimcrack – Lake Ontario/Face The Problem Ebor – Overturn 19th August Premier Yearling Stakes – Majestic Myles/Cape To Rio Lowther – Meow Yorkshire Oaks – Sandbar/Dar Re Mi 20th August Nunthorpe – Marchand D’Or/ Equiano/Borderlescott

CRESSY - MAKING UP FOR HENDO LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk

Richard Cresswell is full of sympathy for the injured Darius Henderson, but says the Blades are blessed to have fellow strikers who can all add a different dimension to the team. United’s leading marksman from last term admits Henderson would be a loss to most at this level, but insists that the real focus amongst the forwards is getting a starting shirt at Cardiff next Sunday: “Darius is a great lad and you wouldn’t wish the injury problems he has endured on anybody. It is a blow for him and the club, but he is a strong character and I am sure all the players will wish him well following his operation.

what the Gaffer wants because it drives people on. Whoever gets the shirt has to perform to keep it and that is the name of the game.” After enjoying a prosperous first season at the Lane, Cresswell is eager to pick up from where he left off and is fully committed to spearheading a promotion push “I enjoyed last season and, although it wasn’t a successful season for the team, it was a great campaign personally and I am looking to emulate that this time around, especially after signing the new contract. “This is a team game though and team is the big word. We need 11 players pulling in the same direction every week and if that happens we have as much chance as anybody else.”

“What you see it what you get with the big man. He is strong, powerful and direct, so we are bound to miss him, but it is down to the others to show the Gaffer what they can do, given the opportunity.

Estudiantes’ assistant manger Guillermo Trama paid tribute to the Blades’ hospitality, staff and fans following the friendly on Sunday afternoon. Although his young team were beaten by the only goal of the game in the closing stages, Trama was adamant that the whole trip had been an eye-opener for the Argentineans:

“It was a very even and tight game and although we created chances, in contests like that one mistake can cost you the vital goal.

Boss Blackwell said: "Losing an important member of the squad like Darius is a blow and we wish him well with his rehabilitation. Our squad is not the biggest in terms of quantity but we have other quality forwards who are keen to find the target in the early season matches."

“We would definitely like to do something again and we have learnt a lot, not least how to treat people because it was very noticeable to us all just how helpful Kevin Blackwell and the staff at Bramall Lane and the Academy were - they really looked after us.

Darius Henderson is set to undergo an operation on a hamstring complaint picked up in the fixture at Sheffield Wednesday last season. It had been hoped that the striker would be fit for the start of the campaign and had begun pre-season with the remainder of the squad. However, further soreness has resulted in Henderson being booked in for an operation, after which an assessment of his rehabilitation period can be more accurately made, although he will certainly out for the next couple of months.

SKIPPER EYES DAGGERS CLASH LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Wednesday captain Darren Purse insists the squad must be on the ball for all 46 games this season starting this Saturday against Dagenham & Redbridge. Purse is hoping for a good start to the season which will create a feel-good factor around the club and give the squad an early boost of confidence heading into the new league campaign.

The returning front man, by his own admission, is behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness but still has hopes of featuring next week against Dagenham & Redbridge. Morrison came on for the last 30 minutes against Rovers on Saturday and came close to scoring on a number of occasions - including with his first touch from a Wednesday corner. The Daggers are first up at Hillsborough and, fresh from their promotion via the play-offs in League Two, Purse expects them to come to S6 looking for three-points. He went on: “It’s going to be a tough game. They’ve just been promoted and will come here looking to win so we need to go out there and stamp our authority on the game early doors. “It will be a difficult game, it will be a difficult season and we’ll need to be on the ball for all 46 games and if we’re not, we’ll make it hard for ourselves.”

In response to speculation in previous weeks as to the future of Sheffield Wednesday, the Board wishes to make the following statement: 'In our search for new investment, we have set a number of key conditions for potential partners who wish to be part of the Club moving forward. Central to these is the ability to invest money into the Club straight away. 'We have stated in the past that £5m is the minimum figure that is needed to assist the Club on day one. This figure would allow for a major reduction in the debt position of the Club and would ultimately give

STRIKE THE BAR AT HILLSBOROUGH LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk

Strike The Bar is an exciting new half-time entertainment competition that will give Owls fans the chance to win a lifechanging £100,000. Kicking-off on Saturday when Wednesday play their first game against Dagenham & Redbridge, Strike The Bar will take place at every home league game this season. At each home match one lucky winner will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to step onto the hallowed Hillsborough turf and take a shot at the crossbar from the half way line in front of the famous Kop end.

He told Wednesday Player: "I'm obviously a few weeks behind the rest of the lads but that's not going to stop me going to the gaffer and saying I want to start on Saturday because I know if I get half a chance I can put it in the net. "Everyone wants to be in with a shout because Saturday is what counts now." The 30-year-old has had some minor injuries that have kept him out of featuring in pre-season but the striker felt good after Saturday's match at the Keepmoat. He went on: "I've had this groin and back problem for the last two weeks but I've been training these last four days, trying to do catch up running. It's hard but I felt good at Doncaster and better than I thought I would when I got on the pitch." Focus is now on the opening League One fixture next week and Morrison will be confident going into the allimportant clash at Hillsborough. He added: "If we create chances like we did against Doncaster, then we'll definitely score goals. "The most important thing is to get it right when the league games start, obviously you want to get it right in pre-season but the most important thing is next Saturday."

“If we get off to a good start, get the confidence and the feelgood factor around the place, then I think we’ll go close this season.”

Owls striker Clinton Morrison made his first appearance of pre-season for Wednesday against Doncaster Rovers and is now pushing to feature next Saturday.

He told swfc.co.uk: “We know results haven’t been fantastic in preseason but the performances have been improving and it’s now when the results start to matter.

decide which team would lift the Alex Sabella trophy, and Trama felt that the result could have gone either way:

more resources to the manager to invest in the playing squad. 'It is the duty of the Board to protect the long term interests of the Football Club. We recognise that investment is needed but will not let anybody take control of Sheffield Wednesday, unless they have the ability to meet the Club's financial requirements in the short, medium and long term. This is a position that is supported by the Co-operative Bank.

the Board. 'Out of respect for all parties and to allow for the Club to focus on the start of the new season, we will not be making any further comment on the investment process until such time as there is firm news to deliver to our supporters.' This statement has been agreed by the Co-operative Bank.

'We have been approached by a number of interested parties and it is true to say that we have been made offers that fall short of the conditions that have been set. Club 9 Sports LLC is one such party and while they continue to make noise in the media, we focus on negotiations with credible long term investment partners.
