The car supermarket giant has broken with tradition once again by making a sevenfigure investment in the city to rename the internationallyrenowned venue the ‘Motorpoint Arena’ from August onwards.

COPLEY’S COLUMN Having been on holiday for the past two weeks, I am afraid I have little to report locally, and so this week’s column will be a bit of a holiday blog, with bits of information of and pitfalls we have experienced. Before setting off to East Midlands airport, I had the foresight to weigh our cases o check that we were within the twenty kilos, and was alarmed to see that although my case weighed only seventeen kilos, Caron’s weighed thirty, typical woman. As the penalties for overweight are twelve euros per kilo, I was anxious not to be stuck with a bill of over one hundred pounds, and so we had to repack. During this process, Caron’s expensive cosmetics were relocated to hand luggage, and what a mistake this turned out to be. On arrival at East Midlands, half of these cosmetics were impounded, presumably because it was thought that they could be components to make an explosive device. Caron was livid, and I did not improve matters by suggesting that it was her fault for looking like a terrorist. If looks could kill, I would have perished after what I thought was a fairly bland bit of humour, particularly as we were allowed to purchase cheaper cosmetics on the other side of the barrier. Therefore, tip number one is always pack items of this nature in your cases which are stored in the hold. This was the first time we had booked a night flight, and I will never do it again. We arrived in Majorca in the early hours, and
were too knackered to unpack. Tip number two is never fly at night. However, on the bright side, the hotel, the Hawaii at Torre Nova, midway between Palma Nova and Magaluf was excellent. I have given this superb hotel a free plug elsewhere in this week’s paper. Breakfast in the morning had an excellent choice for all nationalities, and I got stuck in every morning to a typical English breakfast of bacon, sausage mushrooms, beans, tomatoes and fried eggs, which was divine after three months of severe dieting. We skipped lunch on every day except one, due to our massive food intake in the morning, but we were surprised to note the fantastic choice yet again, with the obligatory bottle of Cava on the menu. Dinners were also perfect, with a large choice of dishes, entrees, main course and sweets. It is little wonder that I put on a stone in weight whilst there. We chose not to take advantage of the bar in the evening, even though we were all inclusive, as I have many friends out there and our social life was fantastic, much due to my very good friend Robert Knox, his wife Zoe and son James, who own the driving range at Bradway, and have property in Terra Nova, together with renewing acquaintance with three generations of a lovely family, consisting of the matriarchal Mary, her very attractive daughter Victoria and lovely children Robert and Ella.It was a pity that business commitments precluded husband Robert being unable to be there. It was also nice

I also bumped into fellow Dronfeldians, Tony and Karen in the hotel restaurant, epitomising what a small world it is. Tip number three, if you are a bit mature in years are the best places to have a drink. The Rose and Crown, where owners Tony and Paco make you very welcome, sells a good pint of John Smith’s, is an obvious favourite, and further up the road is Sue’s Place, run by the delightful Sue, which has a great set of regulars who are really friendly. Spain is not as cheap as it used to be and my favourite diet ingredient of Benson and Hedges were dearer than previously, but still half the price. Now I am back home it is like being returned to prison after two week’s home leave. What paradise it is when you can smoke in every bar and the gin is poured out like tizer when you order a gin and tonic. I stupidly took my mobile phone with me, another tip, don’t do this, as I received many joke texts, an invitation to go to the White Swan (twice) to see Russ Dennett perform and even a voicemail from Stephen in our office directing me to take a party of six, all free of charge to a dinner with Jack Charlton. As much as I enjoy watching Russ, I was not prepared to make the two thousand mile round trip twice, and Jack Charlton is not my favourite person. I was saddened to learn of the death of poor old Alex Higgins, what a star, but gladdened by the winning start of my beloved Owls
The 13,000 capacity Arena, which opened in 1991, has played host to most of the world’s biggest touring acts including Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Cirque du Soleil and U2 as well as major events such as the International Show Jumping and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. Over 15m fans have passed through the Arena as the building approaches its own milestone of 20 years in show business. The Arena is operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) and managed by Live Nation, the largest live music company in the world. The naming rights agreement will not only see a total rebranding of the building but also includes the Motorpoint logo appearing on all concert tickets, concert advertising, show leaflets and posters together with a new name for the venues website – www. motorpointarena.co.uk – which receives over 200,000 visits a month. The deal represents a significant change of direction for Motorpoint, which is better
known for its sponsorship of British Superbikes, Cycling and Rugby Union teams in recent years. However, as Gary Warren, Managing Director of Motorpoint, explains: “The Arena is renowned as one of the country’s foremost entertainment venues. Taking the naming rights will provide us with a huge opportunity to promote the Motorpoint brand to a completely new customer base over the next few years. “We are also delighted to be investing in Sheffield and, as the UK’s leading car supermarket group, are proud to be supporting and promoting the city, and wider Yorkshire region, to investors both nationally and internationally.” Rob O’Shea, General Manager at the Sheffield Arena adds: “I am delighted to be working with such a dynamic company as Motorpoint. We are both passionate about our products and believe in delivering quality and value in equal measure. This deal will help the Arena to continue to be at the forefront of the regions live entertainment market.” Says Steve Brailey, Chief Executive of Sheffield International Venues (SIV): “In times of such austerity this is clearly a stamp of approval for what the venue and the City are striving to achieve and demonstrates the benefit that the Arena brings to the area.”
Weekly Wit With...
ALBERT SNODGRASS
“Ever since we got married, my wife has tried to change me.” “She got me to stop drinking, smoking and running around until all hours of the night. She taught me how to dress well, enjoy the fine arts, gourmet cooking, classical music, even how to invest in the stock market,” said the man. “Sounds like you may be bitter because she changed you so drastically,” remarked his friend. “I’m not bitter. Now that I’m so improved, she just isn’t good enough for me.”
A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. The next week the man realised that he would need his wife to wake him at 5.00 am for an early morning business flight to America. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence, he finally wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me at 5.00 am.” The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9.00am, and that he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t woken him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed ... it said... “It is 5.00am; wake up.” A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, “How many women can a man marry?” “Sixteen,” the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. “How do you know that?” “Easy,” the little boy said. “All you have to do is add it up, like the Bishop said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer” A couple had been married for 45 years and had raised a brood of 11 children and was blessed with 22 grandchildren. When asked the secret for staying together all that time, the wife replies, “Many years ago we made a promise to each other: the first one to pack up and leave has to take all the kids.”

BEAR BLOOD ON THE ALL! DANCE FLOOR! Polar Bear Club is an indie rock/ hardcore band from Rochester and Syracuse, New York. A demo released in 2005 brought them much attention, and was a precursor to their first EP, “The Redder, the Better”, released in Summer 2006 on Triple Attack and Luchador Records. The EP contained catchy, pop-punk songs with lots of opportunities for energetic sing-alongs, and was found to be a fan and zine favourite throughout the year. The band’s debut full-length, “Sometimes Things Just Disappear” was released in March 2008, also receiving glowing reviews from an even wider number of webzines and great reception from their rapidly growing fanbase. Appearances in “best of” lists followed, as well as tours with The Gaslight Anthem, American Steel, Crime in Stereo, A Wilhelm Scream and Cancer Bats, leading to the band’s signing to Bridge Nine Records, officially announced on January 8, 2009. Label owner Chris Wrenn said the following in regards to the bands signing: “ We couldn’t be more excited to add Polar Bear Club to the family. This was one of the best and easiest decisions we’ve made and it’s a great way to start off 2009. Not only are they an incredible band, but they know who they are and what they want to be-and they fit in perfectly with the way B9 is growing. ” The label at the same time announced they would issue “Sometimes Things Just Disappear” on vinyl sometime during the spring. In February/March 2009, the band toured the UK and Europe with The Gaslight Anthem and Frank Turner, with a small string of UK headlining dates subsequent to the tour. During the European visit, they announced plans to return for a US tour with labelmates “Have Heart”. They also announced that they were to start work on a new album, to be produced by Matt Bayles. On May 28, 2009, the title and release date of the band’s second full-length, “Chasing Hamburg” was announced in a press release. In compliance to the press release, the album was released on the previously announced date through Bridge Nine Records on both 12” vinyl and CD. Catch the band in Sheffield at the Corp on the 12th. 2010 is the year Purified in Blood return with fire. The new album “Under Black Skies” will always be a milestone representing a fresh start with no genre shackles. “Heaven knows the horizon” has expanded to the unlimited regarding making music and Under Black Skies is the result of this. The new album unveils a band that has developed ferociously since their first full-length “Reaper of Souls” in 2006. Heavier than ever before, these Norwegians are ready to conquer and destroy all that comes in their way. (I’d better get out of the way then eh!) Still contributing to the awareness of our Earth’s withering condition; they continue to dethrone injustice with all their strength through their lyrics and appearance. Recording “Under Black Skies” took place, with producer Ashley Stubbert behind the table, just outside Stavanger, their hometown. With the heavy swells from the North Sea being their nearest neighbour they laid down the tracks that later would be mixed by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis, Botch) in Seattle, US. The writing process was inspired by a lot of diverse music. It’s all there in the new album that will be released in Norway this spring by Universal, international release

to follow. With the 2006 Alarm Award for best live act freshly in memory Purified in Blood brings brutality to the table every time they enter a stage. No exceptions! They have shared stages with bands like Slayer, Mastodon, In Flames, Converge and Hatebreed to name a few. Touring US, Europe and Scandinavia multiple times made them the peerless double-axe, double-vox live attack they are today. Regarding 2010, Purified in Blood will once again show the world the heaviness they carry with their presence, be it on stage or with their upcoming album “Under Black Skies”. So if your thing is metal with a conscience then be sure to check these guys out when they hit the boards in Sheffield with a gig at the Corp on the 16th. artist: Klaxons Single: Echoes release date: 16th August This is the first single to be taken from Klaxons second album ‘Surfing The Void’. The first album got them hugely noticed and they’ll be wanting this new single to keep up that momentum. With a cool weird guitar effect as the intro and then a barrage of riffs quickly following, this single certainly does have impact. The vocals are still a bit too breathy and dull for my taste; they don’t inspire or excite me, shame. This song aint particularly commercial, which isn’t a criticism, and it is putting indie music into a

We need people like Lemmy in our music business; he’s a true rocker through and through. This album celebrates the 35th anniversary since the former Hawkwind bassist and Jimi Hendrix roadie, put together one of the loudest, nastiest & filthiest sounding bands of all time to. including ‘Ace Of Spades’, which is bigger, brighter and better as the years go by. ‘Eat The Rich’ to ‘Bomber’, ‘Iron Fist’ to ‘Killed By Death’, ‘Overkill’ to ‘Stay Clean’… they’re each fully matured and individual, albeit clearly belong to the same band. This compilation spans the ten-year period from the 1977 single ‘Leaving Here’ (their first single) to the aforementioned ‘Eat The Rich’. Each track is unique, every song is special. This is a perfect compilation, no duff tracks and no annoying omissions. But be prepared for everything to be turned up to 11!!

It’s as if the Inspiral Carpets are harnessing their indie power and forcing it onto all of today’s dying indie scene. Bands need to move away completely from that sound and feel. But I give the Klaxons credit for trying,
The Killers frontman has a go at a solo album. He has a lot to live up to. The upcoming album will be called ‘Flamingo’. I was slightly nervous for him on first listening; sometimes solo projects can be a disaster. This instantly oozes quality though. It’s close enough to the Killers sound that it won’t turn off his fans one iota. But a bit like the last two Killers albums it isn’t absolutely amazing, unlike the very first Killers debut. In fact I think this single is better than those last two albums, it has more of a classic feel to it. The video, as all good videos should, enhances the song no end. So if you’re intrigued to check this song out I urge you to Youtube it and watch it first. The video is basically Brandon being tied up and tortured, but being saved over and over by Hollywood actress Charlize Theron………….. life must be good at times eh!

THE WILLOWS MARKET STREET, ECKINGTON SANDWICH BAR Uranus reverses out of your sign, but the recent restlessness that you’ve been experiencing may just be replaced, by a sense of uncertainty. You can find yourself asking some deeper questions about your closest alliances, or how you link with people or one person in particular Aries. Call for more…
The Sun goes face to face with Neptune this week. This can trigger magic or confusion in your love life, but it will not be lacking in tantalizing possibilities. Certainly this can be a flirty time, and you are unlikely to be short of friends, even if you are settled romantically. Call for your love scope…
Your whole outlook in terms of your independence is ripe for a review. This may also show itself in thinking about possibilities as far as employment or wider responsibilities are concerned. You won’t mind doing your bit, but feeling you “have” to do things, can sap your motivation. Call for more…
Family or emotional worries can weigh you down. And someone who may have been an arch rival in the past can yet come back into your life. This can equally be true of a past love. In a current tie, trust is the key factor. If you don’t have it, it can cause a lot of issues. Call for your love scope…
You need to find balance in your life, whether it is to do with how much socializing you do or how much money you spend on non-essentials. Yet if you can get things on an even keel, this can be an important time. Single? Accept all invitations, a very special connection is possible. Call for more…

The Sun is pumping up your power. You can do so much with this, not least because others are even more responsive to you. If this is NOT how it feels, it may be that you are too caught up in everyday obligations. But rarely has there been a better time to break out and have fun. Call for more news…
If you are true to yourself, someone could end up feeling bemused, but that shouldn’t be you, because for every person who doesn’t “get you”, there will be plenty of others who will absolutely love your very uniqueness. So, be bold and brave and see where it takes you. Call for more…
A tie which has been off and on can be off and on again, but you could find yourself almost addicted to this unpredictability - or will you finally bond? Around your finances, your common sense, mixed with a partner’s ingenuity, can see you do very well indeed. This can work well. Call me for more…
This can be a very engaging week, but direct your energies carefully because the Sun’s opposition to your co-ruler Neptune, can be a draining influence, so any changes you make, will need to be seen through, and if you’re short of the raw drive to do this, it may create chaos. Call for more news…

DIARY DATES AN APOLOGY Bank Holiday Monday sees an all day charity event at the Sand Hill Tavern in Darfield. I will be playing, along with the Jam Band and other acts to be confirmed. With an all day barbeque and bouncy castle the event kicks off at 2.00 p.m. and offers something for all the family. On 14th October Treeton Miners are hosting an event in aid of Breast cancer, with “Real, Deep, Darren Yorke, Keith Senior and the Ritchie James Show already confirmed. Tickets are only £2.00 and the show will be a great night out.
Sorry to Walkley for not mentioning their dressing rooms a couple of issues ago, but not having played there in a long time I wasn’t really in a position to offer an opinion. The clubs mentioned were only meant as an example, but thanks to the Walkley Committee for getting in touch, and to be fair I have had some positive feedback about the way they look after their acts. Perhaps other clubs could take on board the message that the dressing room is not a dumping ground!
THE WORLD CUP WAS ENGLANDʼS WORST EVER !!!
A FEW ACTS CLUBSCENE by Paul Walker
Thursday nights in Rotherham are really good around the clubs, so this week I decided to do the rounds. Starting at East Dene, my old friends Graham and Angie (aka “Picture This”) performed a great spot including “Ruby Ruby,” “Poker Face” “Rule the World” and a fabulous version of Celine Dion’s “I’m Alive” to finish. The only problem so far as I could see was an old gripe – there were no backlights due to the “No Smoke Machine” policy that prevails in many clubs. Modern lighting needs a haze to enhance the effect, and they pose no health or safety
risk at all – so why can’t acts use them? Next up was Rotherham Trades, and a charity night in aid of the local hospice. A promising new artist by the name of Amelia Davies was on stage, and although her inexperience showed on stage, she has a great voice and possibly a great future. Last act up was Gary Stryke – performing a string of 50s and 60s numbers that very quickly filled the dance floor. Well done to Angle Entertainments for the range of quality acts they provided on the night throughout the area!
Do we really need Fifa to tell us that – I think not. You may need to be told however that many of the regions public houses and clubs were heavily relying on England doing well in the World Cup to attract the crowds and replenish their tills, ravaged by the recession and no doubt by the seemingly unrelenting loss leading cheep booze offered by the supermarkets. (And I may add lavishly supplied and supported by the nations breweries.) Please believe me I am not putting down healthy competition, but I find it alarming that supermarkets are permitted to sell below trade alcoholic sales – while if a public house or club tries to extend its happy hour they are stamped all over by the licensing office and the police. In many of our towns and cities loutish drunken behaviour is mainly the result of youths getting canned up on cheap supermarket booze before they descend down town. It is then the duty of the landlords to control the behaviour of these reprobates. Who gets the blame for the trouble? the towns pubs and clubs, while the supermarket giants hand in hand with the

WHEN I GROW UP… MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
It’s one of the most asked questions of any child, “What would you like to do when you grow up?” Last Friday, my colleague Dave Campbell was joined on his afternoon show here at Magic by ‘Chrissy Boy’ of the legendary band Madness. It instantly brought back memories of trying to make myself look like their lead singer Suggs when I was in my teens at secondary school. I pestered many a back street barber to give me that famous hedgehog like haircut that band members had, but I was curious to ask who you may have tried to model yourself on? We had Sandie Shaw and Cilla Black wannabes call in when I posed the question, but top marks must go to Craig of Retford who at the age of 7 was fascinated by Alvin Stardust. He even went so far as to dip into his Mum’s jewellery box to try on rings that would fit snugly over the fingers in his gloves, just like his hero of the time. Picking up her hairbrush, that would of course substitute perfectly for a microphone on any occasion, and he was away setting the imaginary Top of the Pops crowd screaming. One band indeed around then and still playing today, having just celebrated their 40th anniversary, are Earth, Wind and Fire. Who can forget the beautiful “After the love has gone” and disco classics like “Boogie Wonderland” and “September”. If you would like to win their “Best of” compilation album featuring these hits and many more, just keep listening to Magic for full details. Don’t forget you can find us on 990, 1305 and 1548 AM, on digital radio and online at magicam. co.uk. We look forward to your company, Trevor

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally Bounce for Sheffield
Mobile libraries book in more stops
Mobile libraries will be making more visits, for longer in Sheffield thanks to improvements by the Council. It has introduced a new timetable for mobile libraries which goes into operation this week. The changes increase the amount of stopping time and reduce the amount of time the mobile libraries spend travelling. The number of mobile library stops has gone up to 197, and in the process 48 new stops are being introduced and 44 stops are no longer being used. Of the original 195 stops, 149 remain the same. Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Cabinet Member for Communities from Sheffield City Council explained: “We asked our customers what they thought of the mobile libraries and they told us to make them more accessible. So we have looked at all the stops, considered how popular they are, where they are; especially their proximity to a community library, how long the stops are and the travelling time. We also looked at where mobile libraries were having problems being able to park at the stop. “As a result we’ve changed the timetable Sheffield City Council website to provide more stops that are for longer periods of time. For many of the places Do you have any bright ideas to help where we’ve had problems parking, Sheffield City Council save money? If we’ve found alternative locations to use you do, they would like to hear from nearby. We’ve cancelled some stops that weren’t proving very popular with you. The Sheffield Big Debate is being set customers and some stops that were already close to a community library. up to give you your opportunity to say where they think savings could be And we’ve created many more new stops made. You can send in your ideas over so the mobile libraries can serve new in parts of Sheffield they’ve the summer and into early September. customers not visited These will then be fed into the budget “Above all, before. we have changed the routes setting process over the autumn and and the stops to be at the right place at winter for next year’s budget starting the right time.” in April 2011. For the first time the mobile libraries “Sheffielders are inventive and will be calling in at nurseries, sheltered creative. We’ll all have to work housing accommodation and some additional care homes. together to get through the tough Mobile libraries are free and open to all. times ahead and we’re calling for You can use any Sheffield City Council ideas on where money can be saved library, including the mobile ones, if you in the future,” said Councillor Paul Scriven, who launched the debate with become a library member. On a hot sunny day at the end of July our Treasurer, Maria-Barbara Noack and our Communications Officer, Hilary Taylor-Firth bounced a quarter of a mile to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Both completed the course and raised about £1,000 for cancer research. Barbara and Hilary are pictured below with John Derren at Wise Old Owls where they raised nearly £300 in one hour.

we do less to help balance the books. Our officers are currently hard at work scrutinising our budgets and developing proposals on where money can be saved. We don’t always have every answer and there will be some bright ideas out there that will make the inevitable pain we’ll go through in the years ahead a bit more palatable. If there is something that you’ve always thought could be a money saver, we want to hear from you.” Those suggestions taken forward will also form the basis of a city debate later in the autumn and help steer a city-wide discussion with other public sector organisations on how they can further work together to deliver services that are priorities for local people. Ideas can be sent either in writing or via email initially until Friday September 10 to: sheffieldbigdebate@sheffield.gov. uk, or write to Sheffield Big Debate, Sheffield Town Hall, Room 223, Pinstone Street, Sheffield S1 2HH. HOTEL HAWAII IN TERRA NOVA I feel I have to pay tribute to the Hotel Hawaii, in Terra Nova, and have no hesitation in recommending this fine establishment for the perfect holiday I t was truly magnificent, with helpful friendly staff, excellent room service and probably the best run restaurant I have experienced, having stayed in many hotels. I would like to thank our very efficient head waiter, Cesar Rodriguez,
for really looking after us, and being responsible for the smooth running of the restaurant. Take my tip, book a holiday at this hotel and you will experience how a hotel and particularly a restaurant should be run. The food was of a very high standard and Cesar Rodriguez is to be commended. I shall be singing his praises to his general manager

VINTAGE EVENTS MARGATE
Margate is a riot of kitsch and somewhat saucy seaside shenanigans. From 16 to 21 August, the Walpole Bay hotel hosts Burlesque on the Beach – a series of vintage-inspired workshops and performances, with the emphasis on cream teas and tassels. The following week (20-27 August), there’ll be 1950s-style keep fit classes on the beach (8am, MonFri) as part of the Dippers and Dunkers Festival of New Variety. There will be burlesque workshops for adults, the Magnificent Insect Circus Museum and five performances of Sideshow Illusions featuring a headless lady. For something a little more sedate, the Walpole Bay is hosting two seaside-themed vintage film nights (16 September and 14 October) arranged by the Friends of the Shell Grotto, including Magical Margate (circa 1919) and The Belle of Kent (1958). Expect immaculate RP narration, usherettes and lashings of gin fizz and popcorn.

There's nowhere like Blackpool for a bit of seaside nostalgia. Fortuneteller Maria Petulengro is a must-see. You'll find her booth on the North Pier, decorated with publicity shots of her with a young Cliff Richard and Eddie Cochran (the American rock'n'roller who died in a car accident while on tour in the UK, aged just 21). Take tea in the magnificent gilded Tower Ballroom (theblackpooltower. co.uk), where you can watch serious ballroom dancers as you're served sandwiches and scones by waitresses in French maid outfits. For a souvenir, pop your head into the Old Time Portrait Studio on Central Pier (oldtimeportraitstudio. co.uk), where you can don Victorian swimwear and pose for a sepia portrait in front of a 1900 Blackpool back-drop. by Clint Walker
Recently, I wrote about things which have a detrimental effect on our fantastic sport; I’d like to continue the theme by discussing other spoilers. Many fishery owners spend huge amounts of money to provide the paying angler with a venue which is pleasant to attend, full of fish and with great access. There are currently major concerns about the amount of predation which occurs within nature that has a direct impact on fish stocks. Because of these concerns, a new pressure group has been formulated, headed by esteemed names such as Danny Fairbrass, John Wilson MBE and renowned specimen catcher Martin Bowler. The Predation Action Group has been set up to lobby and appeal against the devastation caused by both indigenous and alien species found in our waterways. A recent press release by the group includes the following information; There is a growing feeling of concern in angling circles, particularly among those anglers concerned with salmon, barbel, carp and specialist fishing regarding the impact of predation by signal crayfish, cormorants, otters and, possibly to a lesser extent, mink on fish stocks in this country. There is a consensus that over the last 15 years the impact of cormorants on small fish in lakes and rivers has been significant. Historically otters’ main food sources have been small fish in rivers, but that food source has been seriously depleted by the impact of cormorants. As a result otters have started to look elsewhere for their food supplies and there is a growing body of evidence that their diet increasingly includes large, valuable
specimen fish, including salmon, carp and barbel. The feeling is that it is no coincidence that the impact of otters has coincided with the policy of rearing them in captivity and releasing them into the wild, with little or no regard for a prior assessment of the food sources available to them. Much has already been written by venue owners who have seen stocks of specimen fish decimated by uncontrolled management of otters, and the amount of red tape involved in culling cormorants is seriously affecting UK angling. Many anglers remain blissfully unaware of the problems; I once witnessed a signal red crayfish being returned to the water as the angler was ignorant of the impact on fish eggs and fry that these alien invaders have. For me, the answer is to remove them, cook them and have them with balsamic dressing in a nice warm salad! Obviously I don’t condone otter or mink as a starter, but sightings of predators need to be reported by anglers so that something can be done to reverse the trend and allow properly introduced species to thrive ALONGSIDE established flora and fauna. The P.A.G. needs support from anglers across the UK in two ways; firstly to report any predation witnessed, and secondly by financial donations to raise further awareness of what is a serious issue. For more details, contact P.A.G. at info@predationactiongroup.co.uk, or write to them Predation Action Group PO Box 6313, Essex SS14 0HW. All contact is treated in complete confidence.

STEELERS TITLE SPONSOR ANNOUNCED, BUT NO MONEY WILL CHANGE HANDS ICE HOCKEY Sheffield Steelers
Sheffield Steelers’ new management team announced a brand new title sponsor last week, the perhaps ironically named Linked2Success will be sponsoring Phillips’ men for the 2010-11 season. However, in an unusual turn it has been announced that the title sponsors, usually the ones to put the most money into the club, will be putting up no cash whatsoever this season. Instead Linked2Success will be assisting the Steelers with online ticket sales, hoping to improve the club’s bank balance by selling tickets rather than paying a lump sum for the privilege of title sponsorship, which traditionally includes in-ice branding, a logo on the front of the team jerseys, and numerous advertising benefits and name-checks at games. The Steelers website, which re-launched on August 1st, has in previous seasons been covered with sponsors’ logos, but this year looks sadly bare, leaving fans wondering where Steelers’ GM Maraini Phillips (ex-owner Bob Phillips’ wife) will be finding the money to fund the 2010-11 season. “Perhaps they are hoping that tickets and merchandise will bring in the money” a fan told The Mercury, “but I won’t be buying a jersey this season and I won’t be buying them for my family either. We are not season ticket holders and have decided that this season
we will be supporting the team on the road rather than at home.” Certainly from online social sites it would appear that a significant number of fans are suggesting that they “will be attending away games rather than fill Phillips’ coffers any further”, many spurred on by friends and family members’ season ticket money “disappearing” under Bob Phillips’ regime, something a majority of fans refuse to believe is the fault of the old management team. Whether fans will hold firm to their ideals once the season starts is yet to be revealed, but during the latter part of the Phillips’ reign at the Cardiff Devils, fewer than 100 fans watched home games, the majority preferring to protest against their club’s ownership outside the arena than buy tickets. Steelers’ new coach Ben Simon has gone a long way towards reassuring fans, speaking to all of the team’s “big names”, Joey Talbot, Steve Munn, Ashley Tait, and Jonathan Phillips, before confirming their signatures on the Steelers’ website. The Steelers will now play their home games at the Motorpoint Arena, as the Sheffield Arena was re-named over the weekend. Motorpoint, “The UK’s No.1 Car Supermarket” according to their website, are the latest company to boast their brand with sponsorship of the Sheffield Arena, following in the footsteps of Hallam FM, who were associated with the Arena for many years.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2010/11
BATTLING BLADES DEFY THE ODDS LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk A goal from Welshman Ched Evans helped the Blades to open the npower Championship with hard fought draw in the Welsh capital.
The Blades could have gone on to collect all three points in front of the Sky cameras at Cardiff City had the performance not been hampered by a debatable red card shown to youngster Matt Lowton in the first half. United defended majestically, particularly in the second half, and thoroughly deserved to repeat the scoreline of the only previous meeting between the sides at the Cardiff City Stadium. Britton and Ertl were handed their first competitive starts, whilst Lowton was given the nod over Kozluk at right-back. The personnel selected by Blackwell offered flexibility but it was quickly apparent that Evans was up front, closely supported by Britton down the middle and Cresswell and Yeates from the flanks. Montgomery and Quinn took up the holding midfield roles and Ertl partnered in Morgan in central defence. Both benches were sparse, with United naming six - including youngsters James and Chapell - whilst Cardiff could only find four bodies. After a frantic start, with both sides looking to stamp an early authority, Taylor won the first corner of the game for United and it almost resulted in the lead. Goalkeeper Marshall failed to deal with Ward’s delivery and McNaughton’s headed clearance clipped the top of his own crossbar. Chopra placed the ball past Simonsen and into the net on 12 minutes but he clearly fouled Ertl in the build up, although referee Walton took his time before awarding a free-kick to the visitors. Burke, from the right,
GAFFERS VERDICT LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
Thwarted by Cardiff’s secondhalf leveller Kevin Blackwell was forced to accept a point in the season’s opener but, playing with a man short for much of it, he wasn’t too downhearted: “Considering the circumstances we gave a thoroughly dogged and professional performance at what was always going to be a tough place to start. “We started well, got the goal and were getting a grip on the game when Lowton was sent-off. They hadn’t caused us any problems, Marshall had made a couple of good saves and we could have

looked a threat for and Bothroyd won early headers for Cardiff.
who had positioned themselves on the goal-line.
However, the first opportunity for United to put a few passes together resulted in the first goal. The Blades refused to rush around the home side’s penalty area and although there was no penalty award when Gyepes connected with Evans, the momentum continued. Britton kept the ball alive in box and picked his moment to play in EVANS, who did the rest, directing beyond Marshall.
Simonsen was quick to make amends, racing to the edge of his penalty area to prevent McCormack latching on to Burke’s pass and then he collected Chopra’s cross. The United goalkeeper also made two saves in the space of a couple of minutes, dropped to his right to save from McCormack and then to his left to keep out Chopra’s shot.
Ertl did well to head away Blake’s cross with Bothroyd lurking and Whittingham curled a free-kick into the side-netting as Cardiff looked to hit back. At the other end Ward’s powerful left-footer, following another Taylor cross, needed pushing out by Marshall.
Blackwell made a double change, introducing ex Barnsley duo Kozluk and Bogdanovic, which enabled Ward to revert to his midfield role.
The temperature then rose ten minutes before the interval, following a whole hearted challenge between McNaughton and Lowton. The young Blades defender was slightly late but was shocked to see referee Walton show him a red card and shout ‘get off’ in his face. Protests and counter protests ensued, which resulted in bookings for Bothroyd and Evans, before the restart. Of course, United needed to reshape and Ward dropped to right-back as Blackwell adopted a 4-4-1 formation. Understandably, the visitors slowed down the action and played out the four minutes of injury-time without further problems, especially when Simonsen comfortably collected Whittingham’s free-kick. United began the second half as they ended the first with Ward as an auxiliary full-back. Quinn and Taylor were in the right place at the right time to stop promising Cardiff attacks and Hudson headed wide a Whittingham corner. Using their numerical advantage, Cardiff saw more of the second period ball and they worked a leveller just after the hour. Blake’s delivery down the right channel tempted Simonsen off his line but the pacey Chopra danced around the goalkeeper and then found BOTHROYD with a perfect cross for his strike partner to direct the ball between Ward and Morgan, gone two or three up. “I would have liked to see how things would have panned out if it had been eleven against eleven all the way through.” Lowton’s dismissal forced the Blades into a reshuffle which handed Cardiff the initiative but the Welshmen were held at bay by some resolute defending throughout the team: “We were very tenacious with players out of position - Johnny Ertl is not a centre-back and Matt Lowton isn’t a right-back, and then Jamie Ward had a stint at right-back.
With the momentum clearly with the home side, United were intent on protecting a share of the spoils but Simonsen had to be at his best to beat away shots from both Blake and Burke. Ward was booked for slowing down the action but the visitors continued with the attacks on the Blades goal. Into the last ten minutes, an unmarked McCormack headed weakly at Simonsen from a deep Burke cross and then Whittingham fired over the crossbar from 20 yards. The tiring Ward was replaced by Yeates late on and five minutes of added time was announced to encourage the home side. The Blades were still on the back foot in the additional period - and there were a number of nervous moments, including a couple of corners - before the final whistle signalled that United were off the mark in terms of a point on the board. Cardiff: Marshall, McNaughton, Rae (McCormack 54), Hudson, Gyepes, Whittingham, Chopra, Bothroyd, Burke, Drinkwater, Blake. Unused: Gerrard, Heaton, Matthews. Blades: Simonsen, Montgomery, Morgan, Ertl, Britton (Kozluk 68), Evans (Bogdanovic 68), Taylor, Cresswell, Ward (Yeates 88), Quinn, Lowton. Unused: Aksalu, James, Chapell. have to be satisfied.” Referee Peter Walton’s decision to send-off Lowton seemed harsh to many observers, but the United boss accepted that there is little point in trying to make it an issue: “I don’t think that there is any point in appealing. There were two players coming from different angles at full-pelt and there was no malice from Matt - it was just unfortunate that his momentum made things look worse than it was but he will handle it.”
“We might not be the best team in the division but we are very organised and we were more than a match for them before the red card. “It’s frustrating but in this division when things aren’t going your way you just have to dig in and get something out of it so I

Cup clash selection posers
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Injury, suspension and International calls will make life difficult for the Blades as they look to progress in the Carling Cup, first round, at Hartlepool on Wednesday.
With Darius Henderson, Ryan France and Simon Walton already out long-term, Nyron Nosworthy not yet ready, Matt Lowton’s impending suspension, and midweek International duty beckoning for Ched Evans, Daniel Bogdanovic and Mihkel Aksalu, selection options will be limited. Kevin Blackwell said: “I made a conscious decision to build a squad that can be competitive, to have quality over quantity, but it can be tricky for games like this.” The United boss is pursuing further additions and has indicated that talks with Hungarian triallist Laszlo Bodnar’s agent are ongoing, amongst other targets, but time is short if they are to be signed in time for the midweek clash: “If I can get the right men in we should end up with a decent 21 man squad that can do something provided we steer clear of injuries. “There are lots of players who want to come here because they feel we are a Club going places but they have to be the sort that can handle the situation and expectations of playing for Sheffield United.”
Blades land Jordan LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades have stiffened their defensive options with the completion of the signing of Stephen Jordan on a one year contract. The 28 year old, who left Burnley in the summer after three years at Turf Moor, passed his medical over the weekend to complete the formalities. Cheshire born, Jordan was nurtured from within the Manchester City youth development system, initially making his league debut whilst on loan at Cambridge United. He went on to make 73 Premiership starts for City before signing for The Clarets in July 2007. Jordan spent part of this summer on tour in the USA with Portsmouth but Kevin Blackwell has secured his signature as one of the three defensive recruits he feels will complete a strong squad that is equipped to challenge.
A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE
FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton 11.8.10 - Pre-season shake up but same old steel
Sheffield’s steel tradition has no doubt taken a hit of late after the new coalition government pulled back an £80 million loan to Sheffield Forgemasters. But it seems that Sheffield steel is alive and well in the form of Sheffield United Football Club after a gutsy display in Wales showed that the Blades are mentally prepared as they look to regain promotion to English football’s top tier. The squad has undertaken what now seems to be the customary pre-season overhaul, with seven players out and eight new faces at the Lane and there is still three weeks until the close of the transfer window. Despite this squad shake up, it was clear to see from the Blades’ away draw with last season’s beaten play off finalists Cardiff City, that the determination and solidarity for which we are so well known is still present in abundance. But there are also early signs that there might just be a crucial addition of craft to ‘The Blades Way’ this season. The signing of former Swansea play maker Leon Britton has been hailed as a signing that signals Kevin Blackwell’s intent to form an outfit that while retaining its gritty nature, will also play in a refreshing and attractive manner. The link up of Britton and last summer’s flagship signing Ched Evans for the Blades goal on Sunday showed early signs of this bearing fruit. The key to our success will be whether we can steer clear of the injuries that blighted our chances last term, but there have been signs that we are still being haunted after injury setbacks for loanee Nyron Nosworthy and target man Darius Henderson. Barring injuries, it is fair to say that amongst the turmoil, Kevin Blackwell has once again assembled a competitive squad with a mix of craft and guile that should see us challenging at the right end of the table come the end of the season.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2010/11 Opening day win for Wednesday LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday saw their 2010/11 campaign off to a flier as they overcame newly-promoted Dagenham & Redbridge at Hillsborough. Early goals from debutants Giles Coke and Clinton Morrison were enough to beat the Essex side, who offered little resistance in a contest the hosts largely dominated. Alan Irvine named five of his nine new recruits for the visit of the Daggers - Nicky Weaver, Coke, Gary Teale, Chris Sedgwick and Morrison - and the revamped Owls made a steady if unspectacular start to the game in warm S6 conditions. But as the early exchanges unfolded, Wednesday started to exert some authority and suddenly sparked the game into life with two goals in three minutes.
Match Reports, Reactions, News, Fans Column - All Articles copyright of www.swfc.co.uk
First, on 12 minutes, Teale picked out the onrushing Coke from a corner and the former Motherwell man slotted home with the aid of a deflection from the unfortunate Scott Doe in the six-yard box. Then it got better for Wednesday just three minutes later as Morrison also marked his debut with a goal. Teale swung over a deep, hanging cross to the back post, where Sedgwick neatly found Morrison and the striker swivelled to fire low past Tony Roberts. The Daggers were on the backfoot and Morrison could have made it three with a snapshot volley after good work from Marcus Tudgay but Roberts was down sharply to deny the Irish international. The Dagenham keeper went one better just before the half-hour mark, showing fine reflexes to palm Tudgay’s powerful header over the bar as Wednesday kept their foot to the floor. The visitors struggled to cope with the pressure and the game settled into something of a lull as half time approached. But just as a warning against
any hint of complacency for the Owls, Romain Vincelot found room inside the box to slot wide past Weaver when the Frenchman might have done better. The second half began in much the same way as the first, with Wednesday edging possession only this time without the real threat in front of goal. Irvine was of similar mind and after a tepid opening 15 minutes made a change - loanee striker Neil Mellor replacing Morrison in the final third. Darren Potter then came on for midfield counterpart James O’Connor. But the spark was missing from Wednesday’s play, albeit the same could be said for Dagenham, who looked bereft of ideas once the ball entered the Owls’ half. The Daggers had a brief flurry 15 minutes from the end with two whipped-in crosses from the left but with Mark Beevers and Darren Purse in dominant mood, Weaver’s goal was never truly threatened. From the Owls’ perspective, neither was Roberts’ - but the earlier first half flurry proved sufficient to ensure that Wednesday kicked off the season with maximum points. Owls: Weaver, Buxton, Purse, Beevers, Spurr, Sedgwick, O’Connor (Potter 65), Coke, Teale (Jones 83), Tudgay, Morrison (Mellor 63)
Opening day win for Wednesday LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk
Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver was delighted to get off to a winning start on Saturday against Dagenham & Redbridge.
"It's going to take a while for everyone to get used to each other but it's been a good start and I think you can see by the strength we had on the bench today that we have a good squad and there are some good players who didn't even make the team so hopefully we can keep everyone fit and it will be a good season." Attention is now on Tuesday's
A VIEW FROM Gaffer pleased but THE TERRACE work to be done LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk
Alan Irvine has spoken of his delight following the opening day win over Dagenham & Redbridge - but insists there is plenty of work to be done as the season starts to unfold. The Owls overcame the newlypromoted Daggers 2-0 at Hillsborough thanks to goals from new-boys Giles Coke and Clinton Morrison. But after an impressive first halfhour, Wednesday let their grip slip on the game, leaving Irvine with mixed emotions. He said: “I thought we were excellent for the first 30 minutes but after that, we were a bit careless and that was down to a lack of concentration.
Unused substitutes: Jameson, Heffernan, Palmer, Otsemobor
“But we have a lot of new players and it’s not just like switching on a light switch, they can take a few weeks to gel.
Dagenham: Roberts, McCrory, Doe, Arber, Green (Nurse 65), Tomlin (Scott 73), Benson, Ogogo, Vincelot, Lewis, Gain (Scannell 87)
“I was talking to Mick McCarthy of Wolves recently, he brought in plenty of new players at the same time last year and he said it can take time.
Unused substitutes: Lewington, Antwi, Currie, Gwillim
“But listen, I am delighted with the result, delighted with the points and delighted to get the goals.”
Carling Cup match and Weaver expects Owls boss Alan Irvine to name a strong squad for the midweek match.
Irvine revealed that second goalscorer Morrison lasted an hour of the game before succumbing to tiredness.
He added: "The manager pointed out to us today that there is no separate Carling Cup team and league team, it's a squad and he will play the strongest team and we will hopefully progress to the next round."
The Irish international led the line well on his debut and marked the occasion with a goal before departing to a standing ovation from an impressive Hillsborough crowd in excess of 23,000. The Owls boss said: “Clinton is around three weeks behind the rest of the lads in terms of his fitness.
The Wednesday keeper who signed a one-year deal in the build-up to the opening match at Hillsborough was also pleased with a clean sheet and is now looking ahead to Tuesday's cup match against Bury.
“I said to him before the game ‘give me what you have got for as long as you can give it’ and he did that very well. Clinton is a natural goalscorer and a great character to have around the place.”
He told swfc.co.uk: "I thought we came out of the blocks very well and got two early goals which was nice.
Meanwhile, Irvine also revealed that he feared Jermaine Johnson could be sidelined for six months after suffering a knee injury in pre-season.
"It was always going to be a difficult game because we know they were going to be up for it because it's a big occasion for them coming to Sheffield Wednesday.
Thankfully, the prognosis is not as damning as was initially feared, although JJ is expected to miss eight weeks of football.
"We didn't play too well after the first half hour but be got our noses in front and never really looked in that much danger. I'm delighted to start with a win and, for me personally, a clean sheet."
He added: “It looked as if it could have been really bad for JJ, we thought we could be looking at six months. But the news is not as bad as that, eight weeks doesn’t sound anywhere near as bad.”

COOPERS METALS ROTHERHAM METAL MERCHANTS
FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob Despite the horror of late Spring and the despair of early Summer, this time of year still brings with it an air of unique optimism. Usually, the hope and dreams are dashed after reality hits you in the face and you realise the flagship signings weren’t the world beaters you imagine as the first, typically disappointing, game draws to a close.
An excellent case in point was Ipswich away on opening day a few seasons ago. A penalty was awarded against us 30 seconds into the game and it was downhill from there. If you saw a larger than average twenty-something sunbathing topless on a surprisingly comfortable black Volkswagen Passat at around 4.15pm that day, that was me. This is the first opening day in a long time that hasn’t involved me assuredly predicting we will definitely go up or we will certainly go down before the day is out. Maybe me knee isn’t jerking as quick as it used to but after Saturday’s result I found myself nodding my head and making subtle noises as if someone had played an excellent safety shot during a game of pool. “Done well, could do better” is the simple report that I received from my Science teacher in year 9 and although Mr Palfreman wasn’t a football fan of any description, this could be used to sum up the first 90 minutes of our promotion push. The Dagenham & Redbridge fixture reeked of a headline that would make tough reading for Wednesdayites but we despatched them in a professional manner and confidently strode over the potential banana skin. Bury will be a good exercise for match fitness and a relatively pressure free environment for players to get to grips with each other and Colchester will be a tougher test all round. A good August will provide a solid platform for us to get out of this league, but you know as well as I – it’s never that simple is it?
