SHEFFIELD BANDS ON THE RUN Whilst thousands are busy limbering up for this year’s Bupa Great Yorkshire Run following August Bank Holiday, musicians will be providing street entertainment to the masses across Sheffield City Centre as runners put their best feet forward. Between 10.30am to 5pm on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September is the city’s first; ‘Sheffield Bands on the Run’ Festival. ‘Bands on the Run’

is a free city centre event involving 15 bands celebrating all genres of music. During the 2009 Bupa Great Yorkshire Run bands played alongside the 10km course entertaining runners and spectators with live music. This year, the bands are back but bigger and better with a whole weekend programme of live music planned across the city. People visiting the city centre over the weekend can expect

an eclectic soundtrack of jazz, soul, folk and blues as well as Latin and African rhythms; from the solo busker to a full samba band. The bands will be performing in some of the city’s most popular public areas on Saturday 4 September; Tudor Square, Barker’s Pool, Fargate, Winter Garden and the Peace Gardens. Musicians, including well known Sheffield bands’ Bootleggers and Dizzy Club who recently played at Glastonbury,

will take to the main stage in Sheffield Peace Gardens on Sunday 5 September. Cllr Roger Davison, Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport, Tourism and City Centre events said: ”This is music to my ears! Sheffield has always been a city that appreciates and promotes music and I am pleased we can put on this free music festival in association with the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run.”

Back Page VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 52 by Mel Jaques Week 52, a year of Radio Nightingale’s column in the Mercury Newspaper and we celebrate our anniversary with some good news! We have completed the repairs to our transmitter and aerial for the 1350mw broadcasts which means that we are now fully restored for broadcasting to the whole Rotherham General Hospital site. And this coming weekend sees the first phase of our programme schedule change move into operation. Phase one sees changes to our weekend line up, new programmes include specialist music shows at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, Big Band and Musicals respectively. On Saturday at 10am there’s The One’s Show which is two hours of chart-topping hits. Sunday’s second change comes at 8pm with the Chart Show presented by Ray Oxley taking a top 20 chart from years gone by and squeezing them all into an hour’s countdown. There are still some of our regular and patients favourite programmes including Ken Anton’s Sunny Side of the Street on Sundays at 12.00pm and before that there’s Sunday Worship which includes the Holy Communion service from the hospital chapel. On Saturday there’s the Comedy Hour at 8pm and there’s Jonathan Carrington with the Best Requested at 9pm on both evenings. Work starts on phase two now which will see a change to our weekday morning’s line-up and hopefully it’s not too far away either.

Thank you to the Mercury Newspaper for providing the column inches for us to share our news and thank you for reading for the last year too. COPLEYʼS COLUMN It has come to my attention this week that a top act, whose identity I am not prepared to reveal, has taken a private booking which has been cancelled at the last minute. Doubtless, had the cancellation been received earlier, the artiste concerned would have been able to find another gig. It has to be made clear, that even though the booking has not come from a reputable agent, but a private individual, there is still contractual liability. People booking artistes seem to be oblivious to the fact that in most cases, artistes treated in this shabby way are fully professional, and depend on the fee to survive. I would therefore suggest that any private bookings should only be accepted with a substantial deposit, or full money up front. Some people have no common decency. I did say last week that that due to alcoholic amnesia, I would perhaps omit to mention one of my celebrity guests at my birthday celebrations. I am sorry to report that I did indeed forget to mention that main man Glen Dale was there, coping well with his new prosthetic leg. This Friday is of course Glen’s benefit night at Wadsley WMC, with a fantastic line up paying respect to a great entertainer and one of life’s nice guys. At the

time of writing, there are a few tickets remaining, which can be obtained either from the club, or the Mercury office, telephone 01142 763633. I have made a special friend of Bobby Dennis, Britain’s oldest working comedian at eighty two years young. Bobby is in constant demand to entertain on the cruise ships. He recently introduced me to his daughter, Caroline, a very good actress, currently on tour with the hit musical ‘ Laughter in the Rain’ depicting the life of Neil Sedaka. Caroline has inherited her dad’s incredible talent, being not only a great actress, but also an accomplished pianist and vocalist. I was ‘gobsmacked’ by her amazing vocal impersonations of the Queen, Margaret Thatcher, Anne Widdicombe and Janet Street Porter and my favourite Marilyn Monroe I called in the Miner’s Arms at Hundall to see popular singer/ songwriter Steve Birks, In the audience were Russ Dennett and Gary Sinclair, both musically very intelligent, who separately praised the quality of Steve’s self-penned songs. N.E. Derbyshire has been a hotbed of entertainment this bank holiday, with a charity afternoon, to benefit Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice at the Yew Tree, Coal Aston, where

As my country house is within spitting distance, and the volume was high ,there seemed little point in attending, preferring to relax in the back garden with a large gin and tonic. Andrew Platts, my Managing Editor, was judging the final of the Search for a Star talent contest at the Pacific Bar in Chesterfield, where I have to say that the talent on stage was excellent, as was the female talent in the audience. Were it not for the fact that I am totally committed to my girlfriend Caron, I might drink regularly in Chesterfield. Football was great on Saturday for the city of Sheffield with the Blades recording their first win of the season, and the Owls, after thrashing Hartlepool on their own ground have shot to the top of division 1, and promotion straight back to the championship league is looking a distinct probability. Let us all hope that the Blades avoid relegation and we can again have the local derbies and all the banter that goes with them.

Following Russell Howard’s sell out debut show at Motorpoint Arena in 2009, the comedian has announced that he will return to South Yorkshire in 2011 when he brings his Right Here Right Now Tour to the Arena on Thursday 17th February 2011. Tickets priced £25 (may be subject to booking fee) are now on general sale. In addition to his live work, Russell has his own BBC Three show, Russell Howard’s Good News. The hit show’s debut run was the most requested BBC Three programme on iPlayer last year, and the channel’s most successful studio-based entertainment show ever, drawing in 2.5 million viewers a week. Russell also has two bestselling DVDs to his name, 2008’s Russell Howard Live and 2009’s Russell Howard Live - Dingledodies, both of which were the fifth highest selling stand up titles of their respective years. Russell is a regular on Mock The Week (BBC Two’s highest rating comedy show, which has seen viewing figures of over 5 million per week), and has twice appeared on Live At The Apollo (BBC ONE) alongside some of the biggest names in comedy. This year he cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End for Sport Relief as part of a team which included DAVID WALLIAMS, JIMMY CARR, and MIRANDA HART.

The Confessional Booth After a heavy night of drinking at the local bar, a drunk stumbles into a Catholic church and slowly makes his way into the confessional booth. There, the priest patiently awaits the man to begin his confession. After a few minutes of silence, the priest politely taps on the window... nothing. The priest taps again and this time clears his throat a bit... still nothing. At this point the priest begins to lose his patience and bangs on the window. Finally the dunk yells out... “Ain’t no use knocking, there ain’t no paper over here either!” Three Racehorses Three racehorses were sitting in a bar bragging to each other about their life accomplishments. The first horse boasts “I’ve been in 59 races and I’ve won 35 of them.” “That’s nothing,” says the second horse. “I’ve raced 97 times, and I’ve won 78 of them!” The third horse joins in: “Well, I’ve raced 122 times and I’ve won 102!” Just then, the horses hear a voice say, “I’ve got you all beat!” The horses look down and see a greyhound. “I’ve raced over 200 times, and I have NEVER lost!” The horses look at the dog in amazement. One of them says “How about that! A talking dog!” The Devil walks into a crowded bar. Within seconds the bar emptied with people running out screaming all over the place, all except for one old man leaned over the bar. The Devil wanders across to the old man and says “Do you know how I am?” The old man took another sip of his beer and answered “Yep” The Devil stared at the old man and asked “Well aren’t you afraid of me?” The old boy looks the Devil up and down for a minute and shrugs “I married your sister 40 years ago, why the hell should I be scared of you?”

SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL HELP NIGEL ACHIEVE HIS DREAM When Nigel Bane was made redundant from MSI Quality Forgings in Doncaster in September last year he was determined to transform his dream of singing for a living into a reality. With a little help and encouragement from Sheffield City Council’s enterprise programme, the 60-year-old from Beighton, Sheffield, can now be heard strumming along to the acoustic sounds of the 1950, 1960s, 1970s, plus some modern tunes, in venues across Sheffield. Nigel said: “I have always loved singing ever since I started going to folk clubs aged 17. One of the first guitars I bought I still play today. It’s a Gibson J4s original American, which in 1971 cost £190 - about two years salary back then. “The trigger that got me singing again after many years off was the open mic nights at The Black Bull at Aston. I had a great time singing every Tuesday. But I was singing for free and helping fill a pub full of customers. I realised then that I needed to sing and get paid for it.” It was Nigel’s mum Jean who first encouraged him to record his musical talents onto a CD and send it to the BBC in November 2009. Nigel’s courage paid off and he was invited onto Shourja Sarkar’s late evening show on BBC Radio Leeds in December 2009. Nigel and Shourja chatted about music and he sang for more than an hour, something which he said he ‘absolutely loved.’ A friend also suggested to

Nigel that his music would perfectly suit elderly audiences in care homes across South Yorkshire. Nigel then contacted Sheffield City Council for advice on how to liaise with care homes in the district, but he was also put in touch with enterprise coach Rob King from Sheffield City Council’s enterprise programme. As Nigel’s business idea was still in its infancy, Rob helped Nigel brainstorm ideas and focus on developments and the future of the business. Nigel said: “Being made redundant from my sales engineering job at MSI was initially a huge shock but now I absolutely love working for myself. It’s like riding a bike, there’s a huge sense of freedom. There’s pressure every day to get bookings but it’s a healthy self imposed pressure to ensure that I do well. Now I’ve achieved my goal of getting paid for singing, which is wonderful. “I would encourage anybody who has been made redundant, or is thinking about setting up their own business to contact Sheffield City Council’s enterprise programme. If you want to earn £150,000 a year, how are you realistically going to do it? If you have enough drive and determination to go it alone you can be successful with the right support. There are massive highs and

lows, but I wouldn’t swap it for anything. I love being my own boss. I have sole responsibility but total control.” Nigel now has his own website, Facebook page and daily gigs. He has entertained intimate audiences at care and residential homes across the district. He also sings regularly at the Hearty Oak, Woodhouse, Sheffield. In the future he also hopes to sing at functions and weddings. Nigel’s musical taste ranges from John Denver, the Everley Brothers, Simon and Garfunkle to McFly and Miley Cyrus. For more information about Nigel Bane’s John Denver tribute, visit www.baneland. plus.com or call 0114 248 1738/07919 801473.

CRIMINAL LIKE IT OR RECORDS! NOT! It’s only when you hear them again, you realise how much you missed them. The multi platinum funk soul brothers, with 4 Top 10 albums to their name, return for the first time in five years, with the first classic, fantastic party album of the decade, featuring collaborations with Roots Manuva and Paul Kaye. Huey, Fast and Frank have been missing in action for 5 years caught up in an acrimonious legal battle with their first manager who they fired in 2003. ‘Classic Fantastic’ bursts out of that gloom like a glorious sunrise shooting infinite rays over a range of shadowy mountains, as spectacularly life-affirming as the last five years have been creatively death-defying. Formed in New York in 1993, Fun Lovin’ Criminals gate-crashed the euphoric Britpop party in 1996 and brought along some unexpectedly unique swag. The generational classic album ‘Come Find Yourself’ which gave us the cackling refrain “stick ‘em up punk, it’s the Fun Lovin Criminal” and the Pulp Fiction–sampling ‘Scooby Snacks’. The mid-to late 90s was a twirling martini cocktail of world travel, acclaim and phenomenal album sales. Like The Killers and Kings of Leon today, the UK loved them first, the most; whip-smart story-tellers in smarter Savile Row suits, who told vibrant, satirical, comically tall tales of living large in the neon metropolis via music, drugs, crime and existential ennui. With a penchant for a beautiful “lady”. During their five-year hiatus, the three brothers Crim found other creative outlets, most notably Huey, who is fast becoming one of the UK’s most charismatic TV and radio personalities. He hosts award-winning ‘The Huey Show’ on BBC6 Radio in London, whilst on MTV he presents a boy racer series called ‘Slips’. The trio, now all relocated to the UK, have left the cartoon New York netherworld behind for a colossal outdoors party, creating a self-produced summertime classic recorded in their London studio and featuring life-long “fourth member”, the Grammy-award winning hip-hop engineer Tim Latham (A Tribe Called Quest, De le Soul, KRS-One – and Britney Spears). “There’s this thing called Noetics,” announces Huey. “Which says if everybody thinks the same good thoughts, good things will happen. Likewise, negative thoughts - it’s not rocket science. And we all want the same thing, to be a Fun Lovin’ Criminal. You have to go through hell to get to heaven and now we’re finally out from under a lot of our problems, it’s a brand new day. So let’s go out and do what we love to do.” Couldn’t have put it better myself mate. Make sure you’re at The Plug on the 3rd for the band’s only Sheffield date. Fun Lovin’ Criminals: The Plug, Friday 3rd September, Doors: 7.30 p.m., Price: £20.00, Age: 14+

The Like are an alternative rock band from Southern California, formed in September 2001 by Elizabeth “Z” Berg (vocals/guitar), Charlotte Froom (bass/vocals) and Tennessee Thomas at the ages of 16, 15 and 16, respectively. The band members are daughters of music industry veterans, with Berg’s father being former Geffen A&R man/ record producer Tony Berg, Froom’s father being producer Mitchell Froom and Thomas’ father being Pete Thomas, longtime drummer for Elvis Costello. From childhood, bassist Froom, singer/ guitarist Berg and drummer Thomas were immersed in classic rock, and all three took piano lessons before teaching themselves their current instruments. They formed when the parents of childhood friends Thomas and Froom learned that Berg had been writing songs and showed interest in forming a band. Froom learned bass two weeks before joining, and the three began working together, getting fast results. The name comes from a habit that the girls, as many do, have of saying “like” all the time. Thomas’ mother suggested the name and it stuck. The three members are vegetarians. Over a period of three years, the band independently released three EPs (I Like The Like, ...and The Like, and Like It or Not), which they sold at shows and on their website. Their song “(So I’ll Sit Here) Waiting” was featured on the soundtrack of the film Thirteen. Soon a diverse fan base developed and magazines around the world began to take notice. Following their high school graduations in 2004, The Like signed to Geffen Records. Since forming, The band have drawn major media attention and have been featured in magazines such as Teen People and Rolling Stone. They toured with Phantom Planet and Kings of Leon, and released their first album, Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? Through Geffen on September 13, 2005. The album is a combination of reworked songs previously released on their independent EPs as well as new material. The band performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and at the O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, London. In September 2006, and supported Muse on a short string of tour dates in the U.S., before heading to Europe to support Razorlight. They then went touring with the Arctic Monkeys. On September 18 2009, The Like posted a message on their MySpace page introducing new members Reni Lane and Laena Geronimo. The blog was entitled ‘The Like 2.0’. They also posted a link to a free download of their new single, ‘Fair Game’. The music video for ‘Fair Game’ was directed by Gia Coppola, a friend of some of the band members since high school, (Nice to have people in high places huh!) and features the Zac Posen for Target fashion collection. Their new album, “Release Me” produced by Mark Ronson is now available on Downtown Music. You can catch the girls live show in Sheffield on the 4th at The Plug.

WILDE TIMES

Young British Blues & Soul Songstress ‘Dani Wilde’ first broke in to the public eye at the tender age of 17 opening for Steeleye Span’s Maddie prior. Having been brought up listening to her fathers record collection ranging from Bob Dylan to Motown, Stax and Chess records, Dani’s childhood dreams were always of singing, songwriting and performing. In January 2008, with the release of her debut album ‘Heal My Blues’ , Dani Wilde embarked on the ‘Blues Caravan’ tour of the UK, Europe and America. Each night she had the opportunity to open up for her hero’s Sue Foley, Candye Kane and Deborah Coleman. Following this tour, Dani continued to tour the USA opening for Candye Kane and Robben Ford as well as headlining European tours with her young British band. “Touring ‘Heal my blues’ was such a learning experience for me. I found myself on the same bill as my hero’s, such as Koko Taylor for example, at some of the biggest blues festivals in the world… I had a lot to live up to!” “She releases a sort of diesel roar from her throat, pierced with little darts of high falsetto. It is like two voices. She sings the old twelve bar blues “I’m In The Mood”, whooping and slurring like an old boy from the Delta. The place goes mad, as if it can’t quite believe what it’s heard.” ALAN FRANKS, The Times Magazine. artist: Janet Jackson single: Nothing release date: 06/09 After her platinum selling ‘Number Ones’ album released last year, it’s cool to see Miss Jackson release some new material. Her first big success was the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis produced ‘Control’ album (They then went on to produce and co-write The Human League’s ‘Crash’ album which got them a Number 1 both here and in the US with the ballad ‘Human’). But it was the follow up album ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’ which grabbed my attention. Very stark black and white imagery which matched a new kinda dance sound that seemed to then be copied by everybody over the next couple of years. This new single is actually the theme tune to Janet’s fourth movie called ‘Why Did I Get Married Too’. I’ll be honest, I know little about said movie because it’s not been released as yet, but this song I can tell you about. Its one of the most basic songs I’ve heard in a long time, plain and simple is what it is. Just her vocal, a bit of acoustic guitar and the odd bit of strings now and again. And you know what…….……..it’s gorgeous. It is a really beautiful little song, very pure, very organic and just as pretty as you can possibly get. The other thing that may strike you when you hear it, she sounds so much like Michael on this its frightening. I know she’s always sounded slightly similar, but because this song features such a pure vocal, you can really tell how similar their voices are. A lovely single this.

Robert Plant precedes his first album since 2007’s six time Grammy Award winning “Raising Sand” with a new single ‘Angel Dance’, a throbbing rendition of Los Lobos’s classic, who actually, also appear in the Vince Haycock directed video. The single is released as an e-single with video bundle (that’s basically a download to me and you). It heralds the upcoming release of Plant’s ninth solo studio album “Band Of Joy”, which picks up where the critically acclaimed roots rock of “Raising Sand” left off. That collaboration with Alison Krauss sold 700,000 in the UK and 3 million worldwide! This new tune revolves around a Middle Eastern chorus melody that acts as a reminder of Plant’s far-flung influences and really has that “Plant” feel all over it. It’s very bluesy, as you’d expect from Plant and it’s a very cool tune, it’s so cool its almost friggin’ freezing! He doesn’t really stretch his vocal on this, it’s not really the kind of tempo that needs it to be honest with you, but I can’t help a part of me urging him on to let rip. Robert Plant and the Band Of Joy will be playing a select few UK dates in September and October, but alas…………. no Sheffield date.

artist: Maroon 5 Single: Misery release date: 06/09

“I am in misery/there ain’t nobody who can comfort me” You’d expect a song containing lyrics like this to be a doomy and gloomy ballad, full of simpering selfpity and added orchestration sorrowful string section, right? Wrong. In the hands of Maroon 5 a track about doubt, revenge and lovelorn panic becomes hooky, funk-pop gem of a kind that’s made them one of the biggest bands in the world. It’s pure Maroon 5, you can recognise them instantly and this is probably one of my favourite tracks by them. It’s even produced by the legendary Mutt Lange! But it’s also the video you should check out, shot through with the blackest black humour, it features frontman Adam Levine’s stunning new girlfriend Anne V teaching him an ultra violent lesson or three. The Sports Illustrated model – who’s also appeared on the covers of Vogue, ELLE and Glamour – taunts and teases Adam with knees to the groin and vicious looking knives before running him down with a car and pushing him off the roof of a building. Tarantino, watch out…..

THINGS TO DO OVER THE HOLIDAYS... SYMPHONY FOR YORKSHIRE Six months ago the BBC launched an ambitious musical project for Yorkshire. A Symphony for Yorkshire involved the making of a short musical film by more than 200 musicians from around the county following open auditions and a competition to write the lyrics to a new Yorkshire Anthem. On Yorkshire Day - August 1, 2010 - the15-minute symphony was broadcast simultaneously for the first time on local radio stations across the county, and shown on BBC Look North, on BBC websites and on Youtube - where it has attracted thousands of ‘hits’ from across the world . Next week viewers will get the chance to see how the whole project was put together in a special documentary called “Making A Symphony For Yorkshire’ which can be seen on BBC One in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire on Monday, September 6 at 7.30pm. BBC Head of Yorkshire, Helen Thomas, said: “ We’ve had a tremendous response from our audience since playing the Symphony on local radio and on Look North. It was a hugely challenging piece of work for everyone involved and this programme tells the story of how an ambitious idea came to life - if you enjoyed the Symphony it’s a programme you don’t want to miss.” Composer Benjamin Till wrote the score for the symphony and tailored the four very different movements to the individual talents of all the volunteers. The musicians were then filmed in 50 locations across Yorkshire with a finale on the streets of Sheffield. The documentary highlights the frustration and elation of the auditions, rehearsals, the filming and the eventual screening of the project. Benjamin said: “This has been the most difficult, complicated, ambitious project that I have ever done incredibly hard work but hugely rewarding. Yorkshire people have to be among the proudest people on the planet. It’s been an enormous thrill and a great honour to be able to write a piece of music which brings

BEAUTY: GOODBYE GLOSS, HELLO LIPSTICK From June Sarpong to Victoria Beckham since the late 1990s celebrities have rarely gone as far as the corner shop for a pint of milk and a newspaper without slapping on their lipgloss. And where celebs go the beauty pages and the public follow. So for a good ten years we’ve been stocking up on Juicy Tubes, slapping on Stila Lip Glaze and coveting DuWop’s magical Lip Venom.

Rule Two: Bold is Best After years of glossing it may come as a shock to swipe on a slick of lippy straight from the bullet but deep pigmentation is where it’s at. This winter bold, deep reds and plums take over from a summer of oranges and pinks so jump right in the deep end. A killer red lip may seem hard to wear but can be so flattering. Rule Four: Neat or Not? Take a close look at any recent beauty shots from and you’ll see two distinct trends – the ‘done’ lip and, of course, the ‘undone’ lip. The done lip is more carefully applied using a base of lip liner and layer upon layer of brushed on colour whereas the undone lip is more romantic, patted on to the centre of the lips for a fairy tale rosebud pout or gently smeared beyond the lipline using a finger. Which you choose should depend on the rest of your face and your outfit but, mostly, which you feel most comfortable in. Rule Five: Lips Alone It’s an old rule but a good one. When wearing a statement lip a face needs little else. A swipe of mascara, a pat of powder and a dusting of blusher and you’re ready to go.

TRIBUTE NIGHT TO GLEN DALE If attendance on Friday night at Wadsley Bridge WMC for Glen’s benefit night was a measure of achievement then we would have had to hold this night at Wembley Stadium. There can be few performers that have served clubland with more selfless distinction than Glen. An enormously talented man, and a very nice one at that, who has performed on many an occasion, when called upon, to support numerous charities and worthy causes over the years. Glen started his career with The Fortunes, who sold more records than The Beatles in 1964, leaving the band to pursue a successful solo career in 1966. He was presented with The Mercury ‘Clubland Lifetime Achieve-

ment’ award in 2007. It’s a measure of the man that so many talented friends and performers have offered their services including Paul Shane, Gary Phillips, Diana Edwards, Cassie Kennedy, Robin Good, Junkyard Dog, Vincent and Lance Edwards. His good friend, and Mercury senior columnist, Howard Copley has greatly assisted in organising this very special event on behalf of Glen. Tickets are still available from The Mercury and Wadsley Bridge Club priced at only £6. This promises to be a glittering occasion worthy of the man and we would recommend it to everyone that enjoys the very best of clubland.

SEARCH FOR A STAR FINAL IS HUGE SUCCESS

a passion for developing music and musicians which is why he enjoyed being a part of the competition.” The quality of the singers this year was the highest so far through its 4 year run. There were great expectations for the Final from the audience, judges and singers and it didn’t disappoint. Each of the finalists had to sing two songs to a capacity Pacific Lounge Bar and Restaurant. “This year’s competition has been a huge success” said Chris Heathcote, the event organiser, “I have never known the venue having to turn away people at the door due to it being full. It all added to the atmosphere and tension of the final.” After a great night of competition the judges finally decided their ‘Top 3’ singers and after a sing-off they finally crowned Nathan Downs, from Shirebrook, the Winner of ‘Search For A Star’ 2010. He received the £3,000

prize pot and was clearly surprised to win such a hard fought competition. He said “I’m shocked, I can’t believe I’ve won. I would have been happy with third place but this means so much to me. I really am speechless”. Richard Morgan, from Rotherham, came second and Tara Parsons, from Chesterfield, came third. One of the sponsors, Lee James, from Bodyline Photographic Studios said “It was a great final and a really well run night. The Top 3 truly deserved to be in the sing-off and I’m looking forward to working with the winner in the studio putting together the mini-portfolio we offered as one of the prizes.” Chris Heathcote said, “All in all it has been a fantastic competition this year and congratulations to our first male winner, Nathan. Also well done to all the finalists for reaching the final and making it a fitting end to this year’s event.”

with hundreds of hopefuls to be narrowed down to 20. To Donnas joy, she was a successful applicant and will be joining the other 19 acts on 26th september, where a live audience will greet her similar to The X Factor. Donna has to perform a 3 and a half minute song to a star studded judging panel and a lively and crowded theatre. The audience do get to have a say in who stays and who goes, so Donna is completely counting on all of her fans, family and friends and the rest of the audience for their support. Between now and september, Donna will be targeting radio stations and other local magazinges for as much exposure as possible. There are cash prizes and studio recording time for the act with the most exposure and the act who sells the most tickets.Donna is hoping to be one of the recognised acts who acheives this. She is a dedicated and hardworking artist who just needs a chance to prove herself in the music industry. So any extra support, exposure or funding would be greatly appreciated. If Donna is 1 of 2 lucky contestants who gets the chance to

progress into the final stage of the competition, she will be closer to receiving 30,000 of music funding and the chance to perform at the O2 arena with some of the counties most amazing artists. It would truly be a life changing opportunity for a local girl who gives so much back. Tickets are £7.50 and the show starts at 8.00pm at Sheffield city Hall, S1 2HB. For more information about buying tickets, contact Donna through her website at www.donnaramsdale.com or email at donnaramsdale@yahoo.co.uk. We wish her all the best with OPEN MIC UK.

Doesn’t time fly when you are busy having fun. Well it certainly did during this year’s ‘Search For A Star’ in Chesterfield. At eight weeks it was its longest run so far but was the event of the week and the place to be every Wednesday night. Over the eight weeks the original 32 entrants were reduced down to the final 10. Before the final started there was a brief tribute paid to one of its Head Judges, Jonathan Ashby, who unexpectedly passed away on the Saturday before the Final. During the tribute it was said that “Jon lived for live music and had

DONNA MAKES FINAL Donna Ramsdale is a local girl from Chesterfield whose passion for singing and for life shines throughout her performance. Singing from such a young age, Donna has always had a long held dream of performing in front of thousands of people. Fortunately Donna maybe closer to that dream than she thinks! Having entered a national singing competiton called OPEN MIC UK. Being no stranger to competitions, Donna was the winner of “Search for a Star” at Pacific Lounge Bar, and just recently became the winner of Idol at Back to the Nineties. It seemed that for her to progress further up the ladder, she needed to move on to an event with national exposure. After searching on the internet and finding OPEN MIC UK, she decided to audition. Travelling to Sheffield City Hall and competing

Well, how long did you think you could keep me away? Well, recently we’ve visited a lot of clubs recently and it seems to me there are an increasing number of decibel meters being installed. On asking, the answer is that residents are complaining about the noise. So what next from the goverments? With smoking bans, supermarkets buying cheaper than clubs, now decibel meters. We went to a club recently that one of the top bands had to come off stage as their equipment kept tripping out which can damage their gear and there’s nothing more frustrating than sat there watching an act stop starting. I can understand the residents point of view and I believe artistes should be on the road home by 11:30 as some have a long way to travel but why buy a house next to a club knowing that they have entertainment then complain to the council. clubs pay for entertainment licences etc and have been there longer than most housing estates so cou ncil officials surely there as got to be some happy medium . I read Bob Crawley’s review the other week and I totally agree with him about BAND OF BROTHERS. We have seen these guys every time they have been in South Yorkshire and they get better everytime; an excellent band with a fantastic vocalist (Bill) as a frontman. If you haven’t had them at you club get them booked now before their diary becomes full. We also went to see Black Pearl who now have the final ingredient in the form of Mick Rackett, former frontman of Rock Legacy who really compliment some of the finest musicians in clubland. But a final note. We went to see Whizz Kid at Ashfield in Barnsley and a gripe I’ve had is people talking when an artiste is on stage. Well on this occasion you could have heard a pin drop. Colin and the band had them sat with 100% order what a great night and we will see you at the clubland awards. Derek I managed to catch the second half of a set by “Sam and Dave” at Ecclesfield Club this week. Apparently I missed a treat in the first half, with quite a bit of comedy thrown in, but I have to say what I saw was very entertaining, with a good repertoire of covers old and new, and very hard-working artists on stage. You may remember Sam from previous acts including “Raw” and the “Two Lyons” whilst Dave has been a regular through Ocean Leisure Entertainments. Definitely worth seeing this show and they are available to book through Ocean Leisure. I also managed to get to Walkley in time to see an act new to me, a male duo from the Rotherham area by the name of “Online.” I just managed to catch the last half of a set that went down extremely

WOOLPACK CLOSURE HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF PUBS TO COMMUNITIES It was announced last Wednesday that the pub famous for being the “Woolpack” in Emmerdale is due to close due to the departure of its tenants. The pub, which is used in the external shots of the popular ITV soap, is tied to Enterprise Inns, and reports have indicated that the current tenant Nichola McGrath is struggling due to inflated rents and high beer prices. Mike Benner, Chief Executive of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale said: “No doubt the tight-knit (albeit fictional) community in Emmerdale would jump at the chance to buy this icon of a pub together, but unfortunately the Government have recently scrapped plans to provide over £4 million to provide support for community owned pubs. Without financial support, communities simply cannot afford to keep their pubs afloat.” John Healey MP, Labour’s former Pubs Minister said: “We’ve all got a favourite Woolpack, Rovers Return or Queen Vic that helps bond our communities and the closure of this pub will be sad news to local people. Earlier this year as Pubs Minister, I put in place a package of measures aimed at helping save local pubs. That support was pulled by the new government as part of its slash and burn approach to key local services.” Mr Healey, who will give the keynote address to CAMRA’s Labour Party conference reception to be held with the All Parliamentary Beer Group in September, added: “CAMRA is doing great work to champion the community importance of well-run pubs and I will carry on helping them and others in the industry reinforce that case with the LibCon government.” well in the club, and reports suggested they had put on an excellent show. All the best Paul (Rocky Horror)

THE DRIFTERS ARE BACK! MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas

One of the longest surviving pop music groups who continue to perform, despite there being several different formations of members in more recent times, are the Drifters. With the “official” line up still managed by members of the family of late American trumpet great George Treadwell, the band have had over 60 lead vocalists alone. Some 57 years after they first recorded chart success, their most popular material remains a string of well known hits from the 60s and 70s which included “Save the last dance for me”, with the dulcet tones of soul legend Ben E King singing, and “There goes my first love”. The Drifters will be performing at Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel later in September, and are due to join me on the Magic Breakfast Show this week, so please make a date in your “little red book”. Sorry, awful attempt at a gag!! If you’d like to go along and see them perform these and other classic songs, such as “Under the boardwalk”, “Like sister and brother” and “Come on over to my place”, listen in for your chance to win tickets too. Confusingly, two completely different bands going by the name of “The Drifters” have been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, but the ones we’ll see in Chesterfield are the genuine modern day members of a band whose dynasty stretches back over half a century. Tune in to 990, 1305 or 1548 on AM, or find Magic on digital radio, to remind yourself of some of their most well loved songs, and join me first thing in the morning and you could be off to see them. See you then, Trevor

PETS

PROBLEM BEHAVIOUR IN PETS Dealing with naughty behaviour in children is something most parents know a great deal about, especially when trying to get them back into the school routine after the long Summer holiday. But when it comes to dealing with behaviour problems in pets many owners aren’t sure what to do or where to go for advice. Examples of behavioural problems in pets include: • Inappropriate toileting in the house • Aggression towards people and other animals • Phobias (to certain noises or objects) • Problems when the pet is left alone (barking or destructive behaviour) Problem behaviour in animals is often a sign of stress, fear or anxiety, although it can also be the result of a medical condition; for example, if they are in pain. Owners shouldn’t blame or punish their pet for its behaviour (e.g. shouting, hitting or spraying them with water) as this increases anxiety and fear, can often make the problem worse and, in extreme cases, can cause pain and injury. It is also important to remember that your pet isn’t acting this way on purpose – pets don’t know they are being ’naughty‘ and there is always an underlying reason for the behaviour they are showing. Owners who have a problem with their pet’s behaviour should take them to see their vet for advice. First, your vet will rule out any medical conditions that may be causing the behaviour. If none are found, then your vet can help you to diagnose and treat the cause of your pet’s problems. Alternatively, your vet may suggest referral to a veterinary behaviourist or pet behaviour counsellor. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “Owners shouldn’t feel embarrassed or reluctant about taking their pets to the vet because of behavioural problems. It is important that owners seek proper advice in these circumstances; both vets and vet nurses can be a valuable source of advice and support. Solving behaviour problems makes life better for both owners and their pets.” Owners can help to prevent behavioural problems developing in the first place by socialising young pets properly in their first few weeks of life. The first 8-10 weeks are especially important for kittens, and between the ages of 3-8 weeks are equally important in puppies. This period of development is called the socialisation period. During the socialisation period, young pets should have positive experiences with other people and animals, as well as experiencing everyday sights and

sounds. If pets aren’t properly socialised they are more likely to be anxious and afraid as adults, which can lead to problem behaviour. Whatever problems your pet is experiencing, remember that with the right help, advice and patience the situation can be improved. For more information on dealing with inappropriate behaviour, socialising your pets or training your dog, go to www.pdsa.org. uk/pethealth. Owners can also download a free copy of PDSA’s Behaviour leaflet at www.pdsa.org.uk/ leaflets.

Angler’s Corner

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1

The capture of a huge brace of carp from an undisclosed NorthWest mere has been splashed all over the angling press this week, but is there another story?? If you read many of the carp angling fraternity forums and websites, unconfirmed reports suggest that the capture may not be completely kosher. Why not? Well, it has been mentioned that the big fish were taken form an area ‘out of bounds’ to the everyday rule abiding angler, and therefore are a result of ‘guesting’……. Whilst I take nothing away from the awesome result in landing two of the regions most magnificent carp, I still, like many other anglers, feel a bit ‘done’. I hate the term ‘guesting’, in my eyes it’s the same as ‘poaching’ or ‘cheating’. If the landowner or club puts rules in place as part of the agreement, then why should some anglers abide by them and some not?? If you pay a vast amount of good money to fish an exclusive syndicate or club water, can I just come along and have a go? No, I thought not. Why should anyone else be different? I’ve also been privvy to an online ‘hoax’ (I’ll give the benefit of the doubt, but I have my own thoughts on this) recently. An angler who shall remain nameless, posted pictures and a catch report of a fish which was purported to have come from a local river; the fish was in the region of 33lbs and if correct, would have caused quite a stir! However, other members of the forum were somewhat suspicious and challenged the angler to meet at the place where the capture had apparently taken place to verify the photographs. After much diversion,

by Clint Walker

subterfuge and avoidance, a clever questionner contacted several French fisheries as he considered the fish to be one he recognised as coming from a foreign land! The result was that the initial ‘captor’ tried to pass it off as ‘wind up’ once he realised he had been exposed! (Draw your own conclusion?) Fair enough; once could be put down to naivety, but it turns out that the angler in question has claimed club record fish from other unlikely venues which have now also revoked. This particular angler now faces ridicule with every futher claim and will never be taken seriously again by any carper who knows the story. Why try and cheat? The advent of t’internet means that sooner or later, there is every chance the truth will out, so is it really worth it?? I’ve been visiting a few tackle shops recently as part of a project and I’ve come to the conclusion that anglers in Sheffield are particularly blessed! My friends at Bennetts of Sheffield (www.bosfish.co.uk) have probably the best selection of tackle in store and online anywhere in the whole of the UK. They produce mail order catalogues which cover every discipline, so to get yours and find out what you could save, either pop in to the Stanley Street shop or ring them on 0114 2756756. Tell them I sent you! Tight lines, Clint

MILLERS Send Your Local Sports News to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk CONTINUE GOOD Distant Memories, if absent have looked at the Hambleton IRISH CHAMPION 2.10 Indiana Gal Cup Handicap (3.30 Thirsk on START AT 2.40 Spacious, if absent Bethrah Saturday). Here are my top 10 STAKES 3.10 Kyllachy Star, if absent Hard rated, ignoring non runners - just HEREFORD Rock City, Excelerate or Toufan take the top 5 runners for the bet: HORSE RACING by Timelord Well I’m back again, suitably rejuvenated and refreshed from a sojourn in the shade in the Mediterranean with an ice-cold beer in hand. This weekend sees the Betfred Cup at Haydock and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown as the two big races with decent supporting races at each venue. There are a couple of good races at Kempton on Saturday also. At Haydock Regal Parade seeks to defend his crown in the Betfred Sprint Cup and comes here in good heart following two recent Group race wins. He has to have every chance but at the likely odds I just favour Borderlescott to upset him if the ground retains some “give”. In the Old Borough Cup there are several with live chances. I was interested in Centennial at a likely big price but just prefer Rangefinder. La Vecchia Scuola, Omorokoa and Red Fama are others with live possibilities of scoring.

In keeping with my value seeking philosophy I have selected the following: Haydock: 2.00 Dancing David 2.30 Strike Up The Band 3.05 Rangefinder 3.40 Borderlescott At Kempton I like: 2.15 Hooray, if absent Reckless Reward and then Eucharist; 2.45 Dansant, if absent Laaheb; 3.20 Samarinda, if absent Alfresco then Red Somerset. At The Curragh on Saturday there are good races too. I like:

Express (in that order); 3.45 Irish Champion Stakes: Famous Name, if absent Fame And Glory, Cape Blanco or Cavalryman (in that order).

While away I have been reviewing my column and considering whether there might be new angles that I could introduce in coming weeks. One of the things I have been considering is giving one perm combination forecast and tricast bet for one of the difficult races each week. For instance a full perm of 5 horses gives bets of 20 forecast combinations and 120 tricast combinations. To (say) a 5p stake this costs £1 for the forecast combination and £6 for the tricast combination. Although this may sound like “after-timing” my top 5 rated in the Ripon Rowels Handicap on Bank Holiday Monday were: Collateral Damage 174 - 6th @ 33/1 Exit Smiling 173 – 2nd @ 40/1 Webbow 168 – 13th @ 9/2 Jt Fav. Osteopathic Remedy 167 – 1st @ 18/1 Keys of Cyprus 160 – 3rd @ 28/1 The forecast paid £624.19 and the tricast paid £18,210 (to a pound stake) i.e. £32 for the forecast and £910 for the tricast (to a 5p stake). Now they don’t all work out, and certainly not always to such good prices but, if there were to be interest, I would be prepared to do one of these a week as they can pay very well when they do work out. Just as a starter this week I

STEELERS SIGN EX-NHL PLAYER ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle

The Steelers announced another massive signing this week, as they sealed the deal with Rob Globke. Globke was selected by the Florida Panthers NHL side in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft (R.2, #40 overall), and played 46 games for the NHL side, scoring 1 goal and 1 assist during his time in the top flight. With players starting to arrive this past week, one of the closest new import signings has had one of the longest journeys, after Ervins Mustakovs drove 1000 miles from his home in Latvia so that he and his family had their own car in Sheffield this season. Unconcerned by the recent financial problems at the Steelers, Mustakovs has taken the word of Coach Ben Simon that everything is fine now on and off the ice. The Steelers revealed a surprise announcer for their first game, and none were more surprised than the Steelers fan base to hear that for the first game the voice in the Whitehouse would be Toby Foster, of BBC Radio Sheffield. Known to cut off the sports report after the football claiming that no-one wants to hear about the Steelers, no-one watches ice hockey, Foster was a shock choice to those who have heard his morning show. Barnsley admitted to the press after taking the job that he had no idea what his job is to entail at the Arena, and hadn’t realised when he accepted the job that the responsibility of announcing penalties, goals and assists would fall to him. The Steelers’ 2010-11 season opener will be on September 4th, at the Motorpoint Sheffield Arena. The game is in association with sponsor Ogilvie, and the first 200 children through the doors will receive an Ogilvie T-shirt. FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.themillers.co.uk Rotherham United maintained their winning start to the league season after a battling 1-0 win at Hereford United. Paul Warne was the Millers match winner when he stooped to head in an Adam Le Fondre cross just before half-time to secure the Millers first away win of the new campaign. Ronnie Moore made just one change to the team that beat Cheltenham 6-4 at Don Valley, with Warne replacing the injured Tom Elliott. Ryan Cresswell played despite being a doubt with a neck injury and lined-up in defence alongside Exodus Geohaghon. The first chance of the game fell to the home side when a James McQuilken cross found Janos Kovacs free at the back post, but his header from six yards was straight at Andy Warrington. McQuilken was involved again on 13 minutes when his shot from 20 yards flashed wide of Warrington’s far post. The Millers were looking comfortable in possession and were shading the play but the efforts on goal were coming from the home side. On 16 minutes Sean Canham tested Warrington with a header which the Millers number one was equal to. The Millers came close on 29 minutes when a cross from Kevin Ellison clipped the head of Kovacs and whistled just wide of the far post. Rotherham’s first half possession came to fruition just before the break when they took a deserved lead. Quick thinking by Nicky Law resulted in a throw into the area for Le Fondre and as he hooked the ball into the six yard box, Warne threw his head at the ball at

full stretch to nod beyond Adam Bartlett. The Bulls made a flying start to the second half with Canham having an early shot well saved by Warrington. O’Neil Thompson then went close a minute later when he planted a header from eight yards well wide. On 62 minutes the Millers came close when an Ellison free kick found Le Fondre at the near post but when at full stretch he could only direct the ball wide of the post. On 67 minutes the home side missed a great chance. A long ball forward put Stuart Fleetwood clear on goal but under pressure from Dean Holden he guided his shot wide of the far post. The Millers had a chance to double their lead when a Law corner found the head of Cresswell but he directed his effort over the bar. The game could have been killed in the 74th minute when the Millers broke in numbers. Ellison travelled towards goal but his pass to Law wasn’t the best, the Millers number seven checked inside but dragged his shot just past the far post. On 76 minutes Hereford should have been level. Thompson found a yard of space in a crowded penalty area but slammed his shot from eight yards wide of the near post. The Millers were forced to take an aerial bombardment for the last 10 minutes but they held on to secure a battling three points.

RONNIE PRAISE FOR EVERGREEN WARNE FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.themillers.co.uk

Ronnie Moore sang the praises of striker Paul Warne after the veteran front man netted the only goal in the 1-0 win at Hereford United. Warne was selected from the start after an injury to Tom Elliott in midweek and showed his predatory instincts were still intact netting the winner just before half-time. “It was a good goal,” said Ronnie. “We showed some quick thinking with the throw-in and then he has got his head on it in the six yard box. Warney gives you everything when he plays and you would never think that he was 37. He was everywhere on Saturday, he chased the ball, harried defenders and eventually just ran out of steam towards the end of the game.” The game was Warne’s first start and goal of the new season and he will be looking for more as the Millers entertain Lincoln City tuesday at Don Valley.

BLADES SUCCESS AFTER DEBUT STRIKE LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk

Defender Jean Calve made a dream debut for the Blades, scoring a scintillating winner. The 26-year-old, who signed a season long-loan from AS Nancy in the week, drilled home a 30-yard effort which proved to be the winner. It was United’s first win of the campaign and Gary Speed’s inaugural victory in his fledgling managerial career. Frenchman Calve and Jordan made their debuts in the full-back berths as new boss Speed made two changes. Skipper Morgan missed out with a calf problem sustained in training and Taylor dropped to the bench. United’s front six was unchanged. Speed was afforded a rousing reception when he was introduced to the Blades fans ahead of kick-off before the Greasy Chip Buttie anthem reverberated around the Lane. The first chance, however, fell to a former Blade but Treacy fired well wide with just 37 seconds gone. However, three minutes later he went closer. Montgomery was harshly adjudged to have brought down Hayes, from the resulting freekick Treacy fired against a post and in the aftermath a powerful shot from James struck Bartley.

Match Reports, Reactions, News, Fans Column - All Articles copyright of www.sufc.co.uk

Preston made the better start with King, on loan from Manchester United, looking a threat but the Blades withstood the early pressure and began to try and play through the visiting defence. The first chance, however, did not arrive until the 23rd minute when Evans did well to control a 40-yard pass from Bartley but was prevented from getting a shot away by a late Jones tackle, although the referee baffled the crowd by awarding a goal-kick. Ertl, Bartley and Calve were off target with long-range shots and a noticeable change in tactics was Britton operating in a deeper role than in previous weeks. The remainder of the half saw United on the offensive. Ward saw a lot of the ball, Jordan whipped in a number of crosses and Calve’s delivery from the right just missed the back post and had the Preston goalkeeper scurrying across his goal. Despite the blank scoreline the Blades players were applauded from the pitch at half-time. Montgomery was the first name in referee Williamson’s notebook after a foul on Jones at the start of the second period and like the start of the first half, Preston recorded the first chance. With 52 minutes gone, King got the better of Nosworthy but saw his shot saved by the legs of Simonsen and from the rebound, under pressure from the goalkeeper, Jones fired wide. Simonsen was also well placed to save then gather another shot from King a moment later. Treacy was withdrawn by Pres-

ton and United’s first change saw Yeates replace Evans on the hour. The substitute took less than three minutes to get a shot on target but his 25-yard effort was pushed away by Lonergan. Lonergan, though, could do little about United’s first home goal of the campaign, which arrived on 74 minutes. Preston, and notably St Ledger, failed to clear and when the ball dropped to CALVE 30 yards out and to the right, he had just one intention, to fire in an unstoppable effort which flew into the top corner. Whilst the Kop celebrated, the scorer dropped to the turf, appearing to suffer from cramp and it proved to be his last action. Lowton was the replacement but Calve did get a big hug from Speed as he hobbled down the tunnel. Jordan was cautioned for pulling back King and Preston used the last of their substitutes in the last ten minutes. Simonsen again saved with his legs, this time keeping out from a Jones shot, although the flag was up, and the visitors played the final five minutes with St Ledger as an auxiliary striker, leaving three at the back. Preston felt aggrieved when Bartley was penalised for a foul on Parkin on 87 minutes, they thought the offence had taken place inside the penalty area, but from the resulting free-kick, Coutts fired into the wall and the rebound from Barton was also blocked. King cut in from the right and fired over and four minutes of added time also gave the visitors hope but the final chance saw Montgomery fire into the sidenetting as the Blades held on for three deserved points. Blades: Simonsen, Jordan, Nosworthy, Montgomery, Ertl, Britton, Evans (Yeates 60), Calve (Lowton 75), Cresswell, Ward, Bartley. Unused: Bogdanovic, Aksalu, Taylor, Kozluk, Quinn. Preston: Lonergan, Morgan, Davidson, St Ledger, James, Coutts, Hayes (Parkin 79), Treacy (Mayor 53), Gray (Barton 82), King, Jones. Unused: Brown, Russell, Arestidou, McLaughlin.

SPEED THANKS FANS

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Gary Speed’s transition from coach to manager was given a boost by the Blades fans at the Preston game who gave him a great ovation, before and after the game: “I never expected the welcome they gave me because I am not new and have spent a couple of years on the sidelines as coach. “It was a bit overwhelming to be honest, especially when they applauded me at the end as well. They were really patient throughout the game which definitely helped because it gave the lads the confidence to keep trying to do the right things. “All my background in the game under high-profile managers

didn’t really prepare me for the supporters’ response, the experience and emotions I felt out there, but I want to give my staff and the players a big thank you because they have been right behind me. “The players gave me 100% and I know they always will, whether we win or not, so if the fans and the players continue like this we can have a good season.”

NYRONʼS ASSESSMENT LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk

Nyron Nosworthy was full of praise for goalscoring hero Jean Calve and young defender Kyle Bartley, following the Blades hard-fought success of Preston North End on Saturday. Nosworthy said Calve’s strike was one he would have been proud of and admitted it was a relief to get the win, which was aided by the backing of the crowd: “It wasn’t a bad way to finish your debut; I would have taken that all day long! It reminded me of what I used to do in my heyday and it is good to see someone still doing it now, joked Nosworthy. “I am very happy for Jean but more importantly the team, al-

GAFFERʼS VERDICT

MANAGERʼS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk A day of firsts at Bramall Lane as United beat Preston 1-0 which made it an ‘almost perfect’ day for new boss Gary Speed. On Speed’s first home game as manager, debutant Jean Calve found the net for the first time ever to record the first win of the campaign and make his second press conference a much happier affair: “The lads tried to keep playing the right way all the way through. There was a little spell in the second-half when they hadn’t scored and they could have lost a little confidence and tried to force things, but they didn’t and I thought they deserved to win. “Preston caused us a few problems through King and Keith Treacy who hit the bar with a free-kick which could have changed the game, so to get a clean sheet as well was fantastic as well.” With Chris Morgan missing the game owing to a calf strain and not risked after a scan showed a slight tear, Kyle Nosworthy and Kyle Bartley were paired in centre defence alongside the debutant full-backs: “The back five were excellent, especially as they hadn’t played together before. Nyron and Kyle were solid and Calve and Jordan tucked in like ducks taking to water - the defence was as safe as houses.” Calve’s 30 yarder into the top corner came out of the blue and the fact that it was his first ever professional goal was as surprising as the fact that he immediately collapsed in a heap: “It was a brilliant strike but his leg seized up whilst the ball was hitting the net because he had cramp - I thought it was just a unique celebration! “I can’t take full credit for him being here because he was on trial when Blackie was here and we liked what he offered then. We took him because he is good going forward and I didn’t consider it a risk putting him in, although his lack of match fitness probably led to the cramp. “He has great feet and put lots of crosses in which we need but we will work on getting more bodies in there to meet them.”

though it was certainly the goal of the season to date. “We have been unlucky apart from the QPR game and we have deserved more points than we have managed to get. “The crowd were patient which helped us be patient with how we played. They had a few chances which they failed to take and sometimes you need a world class strike to break the deadlock and fortunately that went our way.” Chris Morgan’s absence with a calf problem saw Kyle Bartley partner Nosworthy at the heart of United’s defence and the latter had nothing but praise for the on-loan Gunner and he hopes the victory over the Lilywhites can kick-start the Blades season under new boss Gary Speed: “Kyle is a fantastic young prospect and has got all the attributes to succeed. He is still learning, but he is played very well and we bounced off each other throughout the game

A THORN AMONGST ROSES

FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton Gary Speed has made all the right noises so far as Sheffield United manager and after Saturday’s promising display against Preston many are optimistic that a distinctive style change is set to ensue. But however intent we may be on developing a samba style with the flair and flamboyance of the Brazilian national side, we need to retain some spikiness in our nature. Our charismatic captain Chris Morgan will of course be central to this. After his error last week at the Riverside Stadium, some sections of the Blades following have questioned his long term future in the Sheffield United first team. The clean sheet we registered against Preston in his absence also appeared to add fuel to this fickle fire. People seem to have pretty short memories when it comes to chastising our players, without taking the time to remember how important our stalwarts have been to us over the years. The guy is an absolute rock whose mistakes are definitely few and far between. He has been and will continue to be the most accomplished defender at our football club and we could not function without him. While I completely agree that we need to build a team full of players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet, that doesn’t mean that we have to sacrifice the solid no-nonsense nature of our captain. Players like Britton, Ward and Yeates will certainly benefit from knowing they have a solid and dependable rearguard to back them up if any of their passes go astray. And with little Britton constantly dropping deep to receive the ball from our backline, we might even see an improvement in Morgan’s ratio of long ball to short pass. So while I’m a firm advocate of attractive flowery football, I hope that the thorny Chris Morgan will be in our side for a long time.

because the lad King was a real handful. “It has been a hard start but we still have to aim for the top six, we need to find that consistency especially on the road, but we have got a great chance like anyone else.”

FIVE STAR OWLS GO TOP LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk

A goal rush inside the first 23 minutes, a second half penalty and a last minute strike saw Wednesday stun Hartlepool United and leave Victoria Park with a deserved 5-0 victory. An own goal from Pools’ defender Paul Murray kickstarted the rout and strikes from Giles Coke, Neil Mellor, a penalty by Marcus Tudgay and a late Clinton Morrison goal ensured Wednesday’s excellent start to the League One campaign continued. The Owls made six changes to the starting line-up at Victoria Park from the midweek cup clash against Scunthorpe United. Captain Darren Purse came back into the side while Tudgay and Mellor shaped Wednesday’s attack. Also included were Tommy Spurr, Lewis Buxton and Coke. Wednesday made a bright start to the game and Coke almost put Wednesday ahead after just three minutes. Following a flurry of corners taken by Gary Teale, the ball fell to Coke inside the 18-yard box and his low strike had the beating of Scott Flinders in the Hartlepool goal but was cleared off the line at the back post. The game was off to a fast pace and it was the hosts that were next to threaten moments later when striker Adam Boyd bent a curling effort wide of Nicky Weaver’s goal.

But it was the Owls who were off to a flier and got their noses in front following a quick break from a Hartlepool attack. Coke took possession deep inside Wednesday’s half and played a long ball up to Mellor, who stormed down the left. The striker only had Coke to aim for in the middle but his cross was met by Pools’ defender Paul Murray and the defender inadvertently slotted into his own net. Things got even better for Wednesday two minutes later as Coke, who has enjoyed a stunning start to the season, doubled the Owls’ advantage. Tudgay’s cross from the right was cut out by a defender but Mellor was first to react and gathered possession before picking out Coke in the middle and the former Motherwell man struck emphatically past Flinders. The opening 15 minutes had stunned the hosts, who offered little going forward. Murray had the best chance and tried to make amends for his earlier misfortune but fired wide of the target from 20 yards. Wednesday were looking galvanised at Victoria Park and too strong for Hartlepool in all departments and it was no surprise when Mellor added his name to the scoresheet. Pools failed to clear their lines but Wednesday were relentless going forward and capitalised on some poor defending as Darren Potter played a through ball into the path of Mellor, who effortlessly found the top corner. Hartlepool had a late rally towards the end of the first period with a number of crosses into the box

and might have pulled a goal back in stoppage time. Midfielder Joe Gamble took aim from inside the area and his powerful drive looked destined for the target but Mark Beevers got his body in the way to clear and the Owls went in at half time with a comfortable lead. Five minutes after the restart and Wednesday were threatening again, this time through Tudgay. Spurr whipped in a free kick from just inside Pools’ half and Tudgay rose the highest with his header flashing inches wide. Hartlepool came out for the second half with slightly more sting about their attack and Beevers was cautioned on 53 minutes for a lunging challenge on substitute Fabian Yantorno. As the hour mark approached, so it seemed would Wednesday’s fourth goal. Having sustained a period a pressure from Hartlepool, the Owls broke two-on-one with Coke and Mellor charging towards goal but Coke’s ball into the middle had too much purchase and fizzed just past Mellor. Andy Monkhouse stung the palms of Weaver on 65 minutes as the Pools’ man hit a volley from all of 30 yards which the Wednesday keeper was equal to. Wednesday’s fourth goal did arrive and this time from the penalty spot as Mellor was brought down in the box by Flinders who was perhaps lucky not to see red as the Wednesday striker had rounded the goalkeeper, but that proved irrelevant as Tudgay converted the spot kick. Mellor was too much to handle for Hartlepool all afternoon but that was his last contribution as he made way for Morrison on 74 minutes. There was time for one more goal though and it came through Morrison. The Wednesday hitman latched onto a loose ball in the area from Spurr’s strike and expertly picked out the top corner to make it five. The packed away stand at Victoria Park had plenty to sing and shout about with their sides’ dominating performance and a thoroughly deserved three points. Hartlepool: Flinders, Haslam, Collins, Liddle, Horwood, Sweeney, Gamble, Murray (Yantorno 46), Brown (McSweeney 77), Boyd (Hartley 68), Monkhouse Substitutes: Rafferty, Behan, Fredriksen, Larkin

IRVINE DELIGHTED WITH POOLS ROUT

SUPPORTER WINS WITH OWLS MEMBERSHIP

Alan Irvine has expressed his delight following the Owls’ emphatic 5-0 victory at Hartlepool on Saturday. Wednesday romped to victory at Victoria Park and the manager has hailed the professionalism of his team, who now sit proudly on top of the League One table. He said: “It was a thoroughly professional performance and I’m absolutely delighted. Hartlepool is a tough place to come to, I watched them against Sheffield United and they looked a very good side. “Wigan won there in midweek in the cup but I thought 3-0 was a very harsh result considering the quality of Hartlepool’s performance. “This result today was fantastic for us and we are certainly heading in the right direction, but there is always work to be done.” Irvine struggled to pick out one Owls candidate for man of the match given the individual quality all over the part at Hartlepool. From front to back, Wednesday were calm, composed and assured, completely nullifying the rare attacking threat from the home side. Irvine added: “There were so many good performances out there today and I go back to use the word professionalism, because that is what the players showed. “I am delighted but it is only one result. The minute anyone starts to think this division is easy, then we would find ourselves in trouble.”

Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to announce the winner of its ‘money can’t buy’ prize draw which was held exclusively for 2010/11 club members. Owls supporter Rick from the north of Sheffield be spending a day with Stadium Operations after being picked from a random draw of all fans who have purchased adult club membership for the season. Lifelong Wednesdayite Rick will attend the Leyton Orient game on Saturday October 9 to see what it takes to put on a game at Hillsborough. The 29-year-old said: “I am really looking forward to seeing what goes on behind the scenes and to see how much hard work goes on at the ground whilst I’m usually sat in the pub being lazy. “It will be interesting to see how we organise, maintain and put together the Saturday afternoon’s that I love so much.” For more chances to win money can’t buy prizes you can become a Sheffield Wednesday club member. CLINTON - ONE OF THE BEST

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Owls’ striker Clinton Morrison hailed his last minute strike against Hartlepool as one of the best goals of his career. Wednesday cruised to a thumping 5-0 victory at Victoria Park, with Morrison adding his name to the scoresheet in the last minute, having come on as a substitute with 15 minutes remaining. From an almost impossible angle, Morrison managed to curl his effort into the top corner to round off a superb afternoon for Wednesday. He said: “It was one of the best

35

goals I’ve scored in my career; I just thought I would curl it and was happy to see it go in. “I have been frustrated being on the bench but I know why. The gaffer has explained it to me, I’m not 100 per cent fit but I’m slowly getting there and when I do, goals like that will be coming all the time.” It was the Owls biggest win of the season so far and one that left Wednesday top of the table with 10 points from a possible 12. He went on: “I thought the team played well today and was one of the best performances that we have had so far. When you have the kind of start like we had, it was always going to be difficult for Hartlepool to come back.” Now Morrison aims to catch up with the rest of the squad in terms

of fitness and admits he wants to be starting games rather than coming from the bench. He explained: “If a striker tells you he’s happy to be on the bench he’s lying. I like my football too much to say I’m happy to be on the bench. All I can do is get fit and the gaffer has said when I do get fit, it’s up to me to force my way into the team. “I’ve come here to play football and that’s what I want to do; play, score goals and do well for the fans and the team but I’m still building up my fitness. If I have to sit on the bench, I’ll sit on the bench and when I do come on I’ll try and do what I did against Hartlepool. “We’ve got the Johnstone’s Paint trophy game against Notts County on Wednesday and hopefully I can

UNDER-18S IMPRESS

LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday under18s picked up an opening day victory away at Portsmouth on Saturday winning 2-0 at the Wellington Sports Ground. Nathan Modest and Jack Poulton were on the scoresheet for Wednesday who were impressive in victory. Academy manager Sean McAuley said: “I thought everyone did well. Seven of the lads who played on Saturday also played in the midweek reserve game against Barnsley so it was a demanding week for them. “But credit also goes to the staff who worked hard to help them recover. “Keeping a clean sheet was really pleasing, we defended well on set plays and we were able to put some of our chances away, so a good start.”
