SPIKY HAIRCUTS AND LEATHER JACKETS ARE THE LIMIT ON THE MOOR The queue of spiky haircuts and leather jackets that became a familiar sight on Sheffield’s West Street for 13 years has brought them back to life in jaw-dropping style by local artist Paul Staveley. He teamed up with management on The Moor to recreate the scene outside one of Sheffield’s most iconic venues, The Limit. Interest in the venue that celebrates 20 years since its closure next year is at an all time high thanks to Neil Anderson’s best selling ‘Take It To The Limit’ book that chronicles the
life of the club and a series of reunion club nights that have been complete sell outs and attracted punters from as far away as Spain. Everyone from U2 to Human League played the venue that ran from 1978 until 1991. The art installation sits at 54, The Moor, in the former Mark One clothing shop. Paul Staveley said: “The Limit holds a special place in the minds of so many people and the publication of Neil Anderson’s ‘Take It To The Limit’ book last year brought interest to a head like never before. “I’m hoping my art
installation on The Moor will bring memories flooding back.” A Limit reunion is set to be as close as you’ll get to the real thing and takes place at Wellington Street’s Casbah on Saturday, September 18. Paul Staveley will also be exhibiting two limited edition prints of the venue on the night and legendary Limit DJ Paul Unwin will be providing the music. Two previous reunions have been complete sell-outs. Sandra Barley, The Moor’s centre liaison manager, said: “Paul’s Limit installation is one

In Saturday’s qualifying race, Aaron was in pole position until the last two minutes, when he finished in 5th position. The race was extremely close as there was only 4/100ths of a second separating the top five riders! Race one Aaron made a good start from the second row of the grid. He was in 2nd place for the first two laps but finished 4th at the end of the ten lap race. Race two he finished in 3rd position after

Race one on Sunday was a six bike battle at the front, with Aaron finishing in 5th position. Race two was just as exciting as the first race, resulting in another 5th position. All of the JC Racing team was very pleased for Aaron who picked up four trophies for 2nd Rookie positions in each race, only being beaten by Jake Dixon, son of former sidecar world champion Darren. Aaron was also awarded a £100 cheque for Rider of the Meeting. JC Racing is looking for new sponsors for next season. Just ring John Coupland on 07901 556997

COPLEYʼS COLUMN There is not too much in my life of which I am particularly proud, other than being a good dad, but Friday evening at Wadsley WMC , where, with the help of the Mercury, I organised a night to pay tribute to my great pal and showbusiness legend, Glen Dale, literally had my chest bulging out of my shirt. Apart from a slight technical hitch, the evening ran like clockwork, and the audience were treated to a night of entertainment of the highest quality. Gary Phillips compered a show which consisted of, in alphabetical order, Bjorn Again star, Diana Edwards, Robin Good, Lee Johns, Junkyard Dog, Cassi Kennedy, Dave Lee and last but by no means least Steve Birks, aka Vincent. It was fitting on this night that every act, who I have seen many times, seemed to go up a gear for Glen, and each received very good reports to me from what was a very knowledgeable audience. I would particularly like to thank Wadsley Bridge WMC for their very generous contribution of five hundred pounds. Glen was really appreciative that the aforementioned artistes had turned out for him on a Friday night , completely free of charge, when all of them could have obtained well paid work elsewhere. This not only exemplifies the calibre of the artistes, but also the respect they each have for Glen Dale, surely one of the
nicest, unassuming men on the planet. Glen and I would like to extend our total gratitude to all concerned, not forgetting comedy legends, Paul Shane, Lance Edwards and Rex Bacon for attending this evening to pay respect to their good friend and oftentimes workmate. Having the knowledge of so many decent people from Friday evening, I was sickened to read of the allegations about the match fixing, supposed to be attributed to some of the Pakistani cricket team. If this is true, it is an absolute disgrace. Cricket is almost a religion in Pakistan, and the population, with all the devastation in Pakistan due to the floods, have little to uplift their spirits. This dreadful news must be more catastrophic than ever. If

Also, the seemingly never ending stories of overpaid and spoilt footballers and a golf supremo, cheating on their wives and partners is disgusting. They utilise their fame and incredible wealth to ride roughshod over their nearest and dearest. Amazingly, without the fame and the money, most of them could not score in a brothel. After a hugely successful UK tour earlier this year, Kings of the charts Westlife have announced that they will be hitting the road once again in March 2011 to wow audiences up and down the country. The boys will return to Sheffield when they play the Motorpoint Arena on the 28th March 2011. Revered for their spectacular live shows, created with visionary William Baker (Kylie, Leona, Bjork), the band will be visiting arenas in 9 cities throughout March 2011. The shows will include the band’s biggest hits as well as tracks off their 2009 double platinum album Where We Are and from the brand new album they are currently in the studio working on, due for release in November 2010. Westlife are among the world’s most prolific touring acts, with nine sell out tours already under their belts, including playing to a sell out crowd at the legendary Croke Park in Dublin. They have sold more tickets at London’s Wembley Arena than any other act and have played a record number of dates there, an amazing 25. No pop band can compare to Westlife’s extraordinary success,
having been certified by the BPI as the biggest selling band of the past decade. During their 11 years at the top of pop’s hierarchy, the band has sold over 43 million records globally. In the UK alone they have scored ten multiplatinum albums and a record breaking 14 No.1 hits (behind only Elvis and The Beatles). They have also picked up innumerable awards and appeared on hundreds of magazine covers around the world. They are the only recording artists to win the prestigious Record Of The Year an incredible four times (other top awards include two BRITS and an MTV Europe Award). Tickets for Westlife at the Motorpoint Arena on Monday 28th March 2011 are priced £40.50 (may be subject to booking fee) and go on general sale 9am Friday 10th September. Husband Compliment A woman is standing nude looking in the bedroom mirror... She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, “I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly... I really need you to pay me a compliment.” The husband replies, “Your eyesight’s damn near perfect.”
Marriage Conclusion A woman’s husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she stayed by his bedside every single day. When he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he said, “You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you gave me support. When my health started failing, you were still by my side... You know what?” “What dear?” She asked gently. “I think you bring me bad luck.” Teaching A Lesson A wife was in the kitchen making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly , her husband burst into the kitchen. “Careful!” he said, “CAREFUL!, Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt! USE THE SALT! THE SALT!” The wife stared at him? What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs? The husband calmly replied, I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.

Blaze Bayley started his musical career as the lead vocalist of Tamworth heavy metal/hard rock band Wolfsbane, upon their formation in 1984. When Bruce Dickinson departed fellow English heavy metal band Iron Maiden in 1993, Bayley was chosen as his replacement in 1994 after hundreds of auditions. His departure from Wolfsbane led to their disbandment later on that year. After a bad motorcycle accident caused by losing control and clipping his knee on a cats-eye in the road, which put him out of action for a year, his first album with Maiden was The X Factor, released in 1995. Bayley went on to tour with the band in support of the album. Another Iron Maiden album with Bayley on vocals, Virtual XI was released in 1998. The two Iron Maiden albums released during Bayley’s time in the band did not chart as well as that to which the band were accustomed. The X Factor peaked at #8 on the UK Albums Chart and Virtual XI hit only #16, both being the lowest charting Maiden studio albums since Killers was released in 1981, which peaked at #12. Some of this comparative commercial failure could be attributed to fans disliking Blaze’s singing style and tours being cut short due to Bayley’s frequent sickness. In February 1999, when Iron Maiden announced that vocalist Bruce Dickinson was returning to the band, Bayley eventually departed by mutual consent, and he remains on good terms with his former bandmates. Iron Maiden occasionally performed songs from the two Maiden albums featuring Bayley, including “Man on the Edge” and “Futureal”. Likewise, Bayley has performed Iron Maiden songs originally recorded by the Dickinson and Paul Di’Anno led line-ups at some concerts. His solo career spawned four successful and critically acclaimed albums under the band name BLAZE, a new line-up of experienced musicians from England and Colombia joined ranks with Blaze. In 2007 the band now known as BLAZE BAYLEY was born. This, his strongest line-up of musicians, features Nico Bermudez and Jay Walsh on guitars and David Bermudez on bass. The band’s debut album ‘The Man Who Would Not Die’ was released worldwide in July 2008. The accompanying ‘Tour That Will Not Die’ visited over 20 countries throughout Western and Eastern Europe, The Balkans, South America and Scandinavia during 2009. In 2010 the band released their second studio album ‘Promise and Terror’ and began their World Tour on 6th February, which will continue until 18th December and cover the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and South America. Now that’s a hard working band for ya! The tour brings them to Sheffield on the 11th with a show at the Corp. HIDING IN THE SHADOWS! I Always find its a shame when the labels ignore a good band especially when they are a hard working band with a great following, Shadows Chasing Ghosts are one of those bands. Constantly touring bringing with them they’re explosive and unexpected stage presence and with their mix of razor sharp guitar work, body popping dance moves and sing along melodies. The band are being accepted by every type of music audience. They have it all and there is still a lot more to come. Their expanding fan base is growing bigger and bigger every day, not just across the UK but internationally. They have worked hard enough to catch the attention of a lot of well-respected record labels and a lot bigger bands… Though this is most likely a lie because after years of playing gigs they are still not signed to any kind of record label. So much so Shadows Chasing Ghosts have been asked to support Finch (Los Angeles, California’s finest) on there UK tour. The band have been lucky enough to have not just toured the UK but have toured mainland Europe including a headline tour of Italy and have planned a full European tour for early next year. They will also be touring Australia in September as main support for Haste The Day. They play at the Corp on the 18th and do deserve your support so people let’s see you down there! A BIT SIMPLE In 1977 Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchi ll, along with drummer Brian McGee, formed a punk band named “Johnny & the Self Abusers”, After one unsuccessful single, the bands line-up was quickly reshuffled and their name was changed to Simple Minds. Scotlands biggest ever band ... In 1978 Derek Forbes joined Simple Minds - initially he stood in as bass player as a favour, for a gig at the infamous Mars Bar in Glasgow. This was Forbes and McGee’s first ever gig together, and the start of, probably, the most popular and creative period of Simple Minds career. Forbes and McGee were undoubtedly responsible for defining the unmistakable sound of the early Simple Minds albums and composed blistering rhythm tracks, such as ‘Themes For Great Cities’, ‘Love Song’, ‘I Travel’, ‘The American’, ‘Changeling’, ‘Chelsea Girl’, and formed a formidable partnership for the first 6 Simple Minds albums, ‘Life in a Day’,’Reel to Real Cacophony’, ‘Empires and Dance’, ‘Celebration’, ‘Sons and Fascination’ and ‘Sister Feelings Call’. Brian McGee left Simple Minds in 1981, after years of gruelling tours Worldwide, and joined Glasgow band ‘End Games’. Meanwhile, Derek Forbes carried on with Simple Minds through their Golden Phase, recording, writing and touring such albums as ‘New Gold Dream 81,82,83,84.’ and ‘Sparkle in the Rain’. However, after reaching the ultimate chart spot of number one in America, with the Global hit ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’, Forbes was to leave the band, albeit unwillingly..... Within 2 months Forbes was back on the music scene as bass player of German band ‘Propaganda’, and following the departure of Steve Jansen (Japan), from the drum stool, Forbes recruited McGee - they enjoyed another World Tour, and an album ‘1 2 3 4’, which added another 7 great years of their time, performing together ... Recently voted Scotlands best ever bass player, by readers of Dear Scotland Derek Forbes has once again formed the partnership he shared with Brian McGee in the 1980’s and 90s, and they are about to embark on dates across the UK, and into Europe, playing the songs they wrote and love. The show is a nostalgic trip back to the seminal days of one of the Worlds greatest bands ... Simple Minds. You will hear the very first song they ever played together, and go on a journey through the music which they composed - hit after hit - with the added bonus of new unheard tracks. The band features Brian’s younger brother, Owen Paul (McGee), on lead vocals...yes, that Owen Paul ... You won’t be disappointed...see you there! ex Simple Minds (Derek Forbes & Brian McGee) - O2 Academy 2 Sheffield - Tickets £12.00 - Thu 09 Sep 10 - Door time: 7.00pm
YOUR CHANCE TO BOOK THE STARS!
Surrounding the release of their debut album, ‘Good Morning Mother’, Brighton’s Stars and Sons have announced details of a Concept Tour through September and October. But that’s about all they know, so far... The task: thirty gigs in seven days. Why seven days? Well, there was a special offer on at Travelodge, and it made economic sense to block-book the rooms. There is now the small matter of the gigs themselves, which have largely not been booked (oh dear). So, we can tell you that Stars and Sons will be calling in Sheffield on the 27th of September, Here’s where you come in. The band will perform three or more booked gigs in each location, each day. Some of these will be proper, conventional shows: lights, stage, bar, wildly screaming crowd etc. But this is a band that paints all their own artwork (every bloody copy), write/ produce their own records and film their own videos: they’re hardly playing by Pop Rules. So they also want to play for you, anywhere and everywhere, as part of their self-appointed ‘Thirty Gigs in Seven Days’ challenge. As it’s rude to show up anywhere uninvited, they are asking you, the Great British Public, to play ‘Booking Agent’. If you have a house party / wedding / company presentation / particularly dull Maths class / church service that you want them to crash, then you need to get in touch. It will cost their kind benefactors precisely nothing: the band will bring all their own equipment, film the whole gig, and return weary yet happy (hopefully) to their cheap’n’cheerful accommodation each evening. The only rule: no busking. That’s cheating. Well, save for 5 ‘busk passes’ for if the going gets particularly tough. Rather than desperately playing anywhere, in reality they want to play everywhere, in the way that a band who truly love their music (and not playing by the rules) will. It is Guerrilla Gigging with a twist: the band will come to you. And with radio fans of the album including Lauren Lavern, John Kennedy, Marc Riley, Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens, and having supported the likes of Hockey, Okkervil River and Dr Dog...well, they might just be on to something. Get in touch at gigsgigsgigs@starsandsons.co.uk Details of gigs will be announced, as they’re booked, on: www.facebook.com/starsandsons www.twitter.com/starsandsons www.myspace.com/starsandsonsuk

reviews by presley
artist: David Bowie album: Outside/Heathen release date: 13/09/10 Here we have a special double release that comes in a really nice little package, looks cool. But really it’s the music that important isn’t it? (No, not always…..The Ed). Well Bowie has always been innovative; we all know what he’s achieved over the years. In fact, his ‘Diamond Dogs’ album, I think, is one of the best albums of all time. Going back now to the mid ‘90’s Bowie released the first of this double set, the ‘Outside’ album. It has a running narrative throughout and is somewhat of a concept album in many ways. The first hit single of it was ‘Hearts Filthy Lesson’. It was Bowie’s attempt at the time to sound as much like Nine Inch Nails (the new huge industrial American band) as he could, and he did a great job of it. Nine Inch Nails even did a remix of it and then they subsequently toured together in the US. I was told a story at the time that Bowie got the lighting guy to mess up the Nails light show as much as possible so that his show would look the best, not sure if this is true but its entertaining little anecdote anyway. This whole album is stunning; it’s really alternative, unique (apart for the Nails bits) and is full of great songs and sounds. After the drum and bass lead ‘Earthling’ album Bowie then announced his next album ‘Hours’ would be written from the perspective of a 50 year old…………Noooooo! Guess what? It was awful. Bowie had finally aged and mellowed out and I don’t think he’s recovered ever since. I hate it when artists mellow as they get older, it’s so disappointing. He tried to recover a few years later with the second album in this package ‘Heathen’. He partly manages it. It is a tad weirder. Songs such as ‘Cactus’ and ‘Heathen’ are great, but overall it’s not the Bowie I want. This double set is still worth getting your hands on, ‘Outside’ is stunning and worth the money alone, also it’s a cheap price so you kinda get an average album thrown in for the price.
artist: Manic Street Preachers Single: It’s NotWar... release date: 13/09/10
Some are saying this could be the last big goodbye from this influential indie band……………who knows? But it if it is, then it’s a pretty good way to go out. I always really liked their very early stuff, ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ for example, it had an edge to it. I even liked the more later, more grandiose ‘A Design For Life’. But they lost me after that period. They just seemed (to me anyway) to be re-treading old ground, but not in a better way. Their music and songwrting had become lesser than it was previously. So when this new single fell onto my doormat, I wasn’t particularly enthused. Its taken from their latest album ‘Postcards From a Young Man’…………I know, awful title eh! But let’s move on from that shall we. From the first few strums of electric guitar to the opening strings this catches you. The very recognisable James Dean Bradfield vocal comes in and the verses are just as hooky as the chorus. It’s got a cool guitar riff in the middle and to be honest…………this song is huge! I’m so impressed. It’s really a rock song with strings (not the puppet ones). Check out the video because it features Anna Friel playing chess, who would have thought that Anna Friel would end up doing pawn!

HAVE YOU GOK THE LOOK?
The search is on for a male model to shake their tush on the catwalk in a pair of signed jeans donated by Fashionista Gok Wan at The Jean Genie Fashion Show. The Fashion Show, to be held at The Civic on Hanson Street, Barnsley on Thursday 16th September and will feature the finalists from The Jean Genie recycled denim competition, recycled and vintage fashions, handmade goods, music and dance from Cabalesque Dance and Depravity Jane, held together beautifully by hosts Lady Bacardi and Miss Fanny Dee. Tickets for the show are available from The Civic Box Office by calling 0845 1800 363 or book online at www. thejeangenie.co.uk - tickets are just £7.50 or £15 for VIP tickets and all proceeds will go to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice! (VIP tickets include early entry, bubbly, nibbles and guaranteed front of house seating) Plus we’ll be auctioning off the competition entries including Gok Wan’s jeans - signed by the man himself. The male model will need to wear just the jeans - no top or shoes - jeans are a size 32” waist – as it’s for charity, there will be no fee, but a photo shoot will be arranged. If available before 16th September to shoot in the jeans to help with promotion of the event that would be fantastic! Let us know if you’re interested by posting your photo to our fan page on Facebook (search for The Jean Genie) or email to thejeangenie10@hotmail.co.uk by 5th September. see www.thejeangenie.co.uk for further details of the event.

MERCURY AWARD WINNERS I can’t remember a Mercury Clubland Awards that has generated more interest than this year. I have been asked and asked again on a constant basis who the winners are. This year, for the first time, we have given voters the opportunity to vote by placing their voting sheets in boxes placed in nominated clubs in addition to postal, text and internet voting. The amount of votes received has been the most ever and it goes to show that clubland is determined to award their favourites the deserving accolade of being a Mercury Clubland Award Winner. This year there have been some new winners and many close calls with the final results only
being known as we approached deadline for publishing the paper. The awards show is back at Crookes this year on Thursday 7th October and I would recommend you get your tickets early. We are also proud to announce that the show will be opened by Sheffield’s own Lindsay Dracass who represented the UK in Eurovision. Lindsay is a truly world class singer and we were fortunate to engage her just prior to her resuming here role on tour with the Paul Carrack band. This will be a memorable night and here is the list of winners. This Year’s winners are... Best Male Thomas Marx
Best Female Sara Daniels
Well what a great start to the weekend, I went to the Sherwood to see Stephanie King’s Stage Academy Show. All the children were amazing, the song choices were great, with the children’s ages ranging from 6 - 16 their singing ability and their stage presence was fantastic. I can definitely see some of these children going a long way in clubland and perhaps even further. The night was a sellout which was fabulous. I must also give praise to Steph as she works extremely hard with the children as well as doing her own work. Also a big thank you to Garry for doing the sound, and to the road-

Scams
Recently I have received a number of letters advising me that I had won a large amount of money and wanted to raise your awareness of scams. The information is taken from Consumer Direct who can be found at www.consumerdirect.gov. uk or by telephone 08454 04 05 06. Scams are schemes to con you out of your money. They usually come by post, phone or email. Fake lotteries and prize draws, bogus psychic predictions, get-rich-quick investments and ‘miracle’ health cures are just some of the many tricks that scammers try. The tactics that these conmen use are so powerful that it can be difficult to say no. Every year, three million people fall victim, losing an average of £850 each, and sometimes a great deal more. And it’s not just your money that’s at risk. Being taken in by a scam can be very distressing. The scammers are clever, and all kinds of people from all walks of life get duped. If you let down your guard, you too could become a victim.
Prescription for future pharmacy services
NHS Sheffield is asking for views to help shape a document on how future decisions will be made about new pharmacy services in the City. Michelle Black, Deputy head of medicines management, NHS Sheffield said: “Pharmacies are at the heart of our communities and we believe there is scope for them to offer further services in the future, to support people in their efforts to lead healthier lifestyles.” Jeanette Miller, Head of patient experience and engagement, NHS Sheffield, said: “We’ll be going out and about talking to local voluntary, community and faith groups in the City about the consultation. HANDLING SOMEONES AFFAIRS Solicitor Katy Burgin of Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors answers questions about dealing with someone’s finances and affairs when they are unable to do so themselves My mother has Alzheimer’s disease and can no longer handle her finances. How can I take over for her? When a family member or friend becomes mentally incapable of managing their own affairs, you can apply to the Office of the Public Guardian and ask to be appointed as their deputy. The OPG will assess medical evidence relating to the person and make a decision on whether to appoint you as their deputy. Once approved, this means that you would be legally entitled to manage that person’s finances and property matters on their behalf. Norrie Waite and Slater solicitors are highly experienced in helping people to deal with the OPG. Whether you simply need help with the application, or you need more involved help managing the person’s affairs, we can help. If an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney has previously been set up to deal with this eventuality then the process is much simpler as the Power of Attorney can come into effect. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal device in which you can nominate someone to deal with your affairs should you be unable to do so yourself. Many people are concerned about what will happen to them in the event of losing mental capacity through such illnesses as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or a stroke. The idea behind the introduction of the LPA is that even someone with reduced mental capacity should still be able to exercise some control over what happens to them and their assets. By setting up an LPA in advance, you are able to retain some control by choosing someone you trust to act as your attorney to deal with your financial and personal affairs. If you do not have an LPA, and later lose mental capacity, the Courts will appoint someone to manage your affairs and this may not be the person you would have chosen yourself. You can tailor-make an LPA to suit your requirements, including limiting the scope as you see fit. LPA’s can be used to give your attorney power to deal with your property and finances or your personal welfare and healthcare decisions; or both as you see fit. For further advice call 0114 276 6166 or visit www.norriewaite.co.uk to find your local branch.

Budget Brides - Not a celebrity, couples on a tight budget need not dispair.
If you happen to be a Hollywood celebrity, chances are there’ll be a host of magazines queuing up to pay for your wedding. However, for most couples getting married in the UK today, a £17,000 bill - the average cost of a wedding could be enough to give you second thoughts. Money can’t buy you love, but it can certainly help along the way. Nevertheless, couples on a tight budget need not despair - your big day doesn’t have to leave you in debt for the rest of your life. Here are some tips to cut costs on all elements of your wedding. Guest List - Think carefully about how many people you want to invite. In the initial excitement of planning your wedding you’re likely to come up with a list of hundreds of people, so it’s a good idea to trim this list down, perhaps only inviting the closest family and friends so as not to offend anyone. Invitations - Once you’ve decided who to invite, it’s time to send out your invitations. Professional wedding invites can cost in the region of £90, but with a little bit of creativity you can make your own. Simply pop into a stationer’s and pick up some plain cards, envelopes and gold and silver pens. Twenty-five invitations can be made for under £5. Dress - While the traditional flowing white wedding dress still remains popular, nowadays it can be just as fashionable to get married in a smart suit or dress which you can wear again on other occasions. Alternatively, if your heart is set on a fairytale gown, you can hire your dress instead of buying it, and ask the bridesmaids to pay for their own outfits. Dresses for children can be picked up from department stores for under £20. Groom - Many suit hire companies run special offers, such as four suits for the price of three. Again, you can ask the best man and ushers to pay for their own suits. Flowers - There’s no need to go overboard with flowers as a simple arrangement can often be just as effective. When it comes to bouquets it pays to shop around. Local florists usually offer special deals, whilst going for flowers which are in season also helps to cut the cost. Photography - There’s no need to hire a professional photographer; just find a friend who’s handy with a camera. The same applies if you want a wedding video, though it often helps if you hire the camcorder early and allow your cameraperson plenty of time to practice before the big day. Hair & Make-Up - Everybody has a friend who should have been a hairdresser, and chances are they’ll be delighted to be asked to do your hair. Make-up counters in department stores often perform free makeovers, but make sure you have a trial run before the big day arrives. Rings - Rings can be one of the most expensive elements of a wedding, but by shopping around you can pick up some bargains, with simple gold bands costing under £50 for a pair. Instead of splashing out on a new engagement ring, why not propose with a family heirloom, which can be adjusted very cheaply. Transport - Getting to the church on time doesn’t have to cost the Earth. Relatives and friends might be able to provide a flash car for the day. Reception - Town or village halls and church halls can be hired out very cheaply, though you’ll have to check whether you need a separate licence to serve alcohol. Many local pubs offer a room for free hire. Sometimes you can hire a DJ from these pubs, but for an even cheaper form of entertainment you could also consider karaoke. Food - Do your own catering rather than hiring a professional company. Prepare a self-service finger buffet instead of a four-course meal, and ask at the local catering college to see if they can provide waiters. Wine - Buying wine wholesale can save you a lot of money. Have a look in stores such as Bottoms Up, which often offer “sale or return” deals. Honeymoon - The cheapest way is to cut out the honeymoon all together, or go for a weekend break in the UK or Europe. Insurance - Once you’ve worked out how much money you’re going to spend, it’s a good idea to take out wedding insurance to prevent anything from spoiling your big day. For as little as £47 you can have the whole day covered. Of course, you can always include items such as a weekend break on your wedding list. And make sure to set aside a small amount of money to cover ‘unforeseen’ expenses. That way, the happiest day of your life doesn’t have to be the most expensive.

We all dream of finding a hidden gem, full of big fish, beautifully set in fantastic grounds, which hasn’t been fished in years, and is cheap, free or available; guess what? I found one!! A chance article in a local newspaper led to a meeting with a ‘fixer’ who then put me in touch with a chap who is new to fishery ownership, but has the finances, commitment and drive to make a success of a rough diamond. I went straight over!! This new fishery is a 3 pool venue, situated on the edge of a golf course, and already has fish in it. The new lease owner spent an hour discussing his plans and asking what I, as a carper or as a general angler would want to see on his fishery. We talked toilets; not pleasant, but a consideration. We explored bait bans or permissions, leadcore, barbed hooks, tin cans, litter, rats, access, parking, planting, on site fresh water, lodges, sheds, caravans, unhooking mats, bivvy pegs, and a whole host of other options which need to be considered when constructing a ‘perfect’ venue. Craig (shh!) asked me whether I would consider helping out with advice, and if I wanted to fish it to help confirm the stock; how many of dream of meeting a ‘Craig’ who would like such help? I’ve been dreaming for years....... The smaller of the pools are stocked with a healthy head of silver fish with the odd bigger carp patrolling among the depths. Established sedges, reeds and willows fill the margins to give ample cover from any predators (or anglers!) and it’s well protected from the elements as it nestles in the valley. Stock assessment is still ongoing, but some big roach, perch and rudd have already hit the nets of a privileged few who have helped out. Smashing, but it gets better! I sat with the owner for some time tonight watching carp patrol the upper layers and slurping down a few mixers we had chucked in. Nothing unusual in watching a few carp, but in this 3 acre water, fish to well over 30lbs have been allowed to put that weight
on naturally without being ‘fed up’ on pellet or bulk feedstuffs. These fish have been weighed as part of the initial netting and have been photographed as evidence, so yes, they are really there!! Not just a rumour!! It’s not open as a fishery yet; there is an awful lot of clearance work to be done, pegs to be constructed and rules to be decided. The fish HAVE to be protected from poaching, damage and theft, so a few things have to put in place first before it is finally opened. A final word on this new place......it will be day ticket!!!! I’ll let you know when it opens, but make sure you read Angler’s Corner to make sure you find out where, when and how you can get on it. It could only be weeks away..... Tight lines,

ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle The Sheffield Steelers had a phenomenal start to their 2010-11 campaign last weekend, with a 5-1 victory over the Cardiff Devils on Saturday, and a 6-0 thrashing of the League’s new boys, Dundee Stars, on Sunday. New netminder Ervins Mustokovs, who has a 98% save percentage in his first EIHL weekend, certainly made a big impression on the fanbase, as shouts of “Mooooooooooose” rang out around the Arena. Saturday night saw the Steelers’ home opener at the newly-named Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, and a crowd of 3800 fans watched their new team take to the ice. One fan got a closer view than most, as Neil Edwards, a rec player, took Geoff Woolhouse’s place on the Steelers bench as back-up netminder. Elite League rules state that a team must have a dressed back-up netminder, and with no others available after the planned back-up let them down, Edwards stepped in, but fortunately was not required to take to the ice during the game. It didn’t take long for the home side to get on the board, with a goal from Ashley Tait signalling the Team GB player’s return to British top flight hockey, and it was another early strike in the second period, this time from Joey Talbot, which doubled their lead. At 32:22 Jason Hewitt was ejected from the game on a 5+Match slashing penalty. His absence did not dent the team’s performance however, as Jerramie Domish added their third goal just 18 seconds later. Another great start to the third period as Jeff Legue got on the score sheet and, although the Devils pulled back a consolation shorthanded goal at 41:48, Robert Dowd scored the Steelers fifth and final goal in the last two minutes of play. The Steelers opened their first visit to Dundee with two goals in the first ten minutes, courtesy of playercoach Ben Simon, and Joey Talbot. Two further goals at the end of the period ruled the Stars out of the game, the first from new guy Neil Clarke, and the next from Ashley Tait, beginning the Brits’ scoring run. Captain Jonathan Phillips scored the Steelers’ fifth goal in the second period, and Jason Hewitt concluded the scoring in the third period with the Steelers’ sixth.
On Wednesday 8th September the Sheffield Steelers Supporters Club will be hosting their first event, a Full Team Forum at Outo Kumpu Social Club. Entry is £2 for members and £3 for members, all welcome for a 7:30pm start. The Steelers’ next game is a non-season ticket game on Saturday September 11th. Tickets are available from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield box office.

Send Your Local Sports News to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk REWILDING TO ROMP HOME IN THE ST. LEGER HORSE RACING by Timelord This Saturday is Doncaster’s big day of the year as it hosts the oldest of the Classics, the St Leger. These days this race seems to have become something of a light of yesteryear as the 14.5 furlongs is not a fashionable distance for breeding purposes. However it is a race I like a lot as the long Doncaster straight provides a stern but fair challenge for the horses and can lead to really exciting racing as the participants slug it out to the line. Readers of this column will be all too aware that a horse that I have carried a torch for all year is Rewilding. He is my strong suggestion for this race. Last time out he breezed away from a decent field to land the Great Voltigeur over 12 furlongs at York by 4 lengths, quickening up nicely entering the final furlong and showing no signs of stopping. The extra distance of the St Leger should be right up his street. Ok he’s a short price and favourite but I cannot see any chinks in his armour and, in my opinion, but for an injudicious ride by Frankie Dettori, he could have won the Derby. I have him 60 points clear in my ratings and cannot see any reason why any of the others should be able to trouble him. He is currently standing at a best price of 13/8 and, by the time 3.30 on Saturday comes round, this may well look to have been extremely good value. The supporting races at “Donny” are also pretty good. The card kicks off with the Group 2 7 furlong Champagne Stakes where I fancy the improving Waiter’s Dream. This Brian Meehan trained juvenile has won his last two races, including the 7 furlong Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York by 4 lengths. He has the clear beating of Aidan O’Brien’s Lake Ontario on that running. The dangers would seem to be Approve, who won the 6 furlong Group 2 Gimcrack at York and looks as though the step up to 7 furlongs will suit, and the relatively unexposed Toolain, winner of a £12,000 Listed race at Ascot last time out where he beat Galtymore Lad and Premier Clarets. This one is trained by Michael Jarvis who always demands respect in
races like this. The 2.45 Is a tricky 6 furlong class 2 Heritage Handicap, the Portland Stakes. There are currently 51 entries for this race so a few non runners are a must. My top rated is the Dandy Nicholls trained Strike Up The Band but I chose him last weekend at Haydock and he ran a lacklustre and lifeless race, never getting into contention and fading in the last furlong. Now it could well be that I am a week out in my timing but I am passing him over this week in favour of the improving Kevin Ryan trained 4 year old gelding Masamah, who won a £21,000 Listed race last time out by 1.5 lengths. There are however plenty in with chances in this one and I am therefore making this race combination forecast and tricast race, so here are my top ratings: Strike Up The Band Hogmaneigh Fullandby Peter Island Cheveton Fathom Five Desert Phantom Signor Peltro Noble Storm We Have A Dream Masamah Arganil Quest For Success Angus Newz Duchess Dora
194 191 187 186 186 185 178 177 176 176 175 175 175 173 171
As advised last week just strike out the non runners and take the remaining top 5 for the combination bet (20 forecast bets and 60 tricast bets)and then multiply by your stake for the bet cost. As this is a relatively high risk bet I recommend absolute minimum stakes. It costs £1 to a 5p stake for the forecast part and £6 for the tricast part, again to a 5p stake. The 3.55 Group 2 Park Stakes concludes the televised part of the Doncaster meeting. My top rated is Arabian Gleam but he hasn’t been running so well this year so I am passing over him in favour of Premio Loco. The ease in grade will help here after he ran really well in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes last time out where he couldn’t cope with Canford Cliffs and Rip Van Winkle, but no disgrace in that! The dangers appear to be Yaa Wayl, High Standing (another that has yet to re-capture old form this year)
and the Irish raider Duff. At Goodwood there are two televised races at 2.25 and 3.00. My shortlist for the 2.25 comprises Layla’s Hero, Zero Money, Jeninsky, Desert Hero, Woodcote Place and Spirit of Sharjah. There is not a lot between them on my ratings but my narrow preference is for Spirit of Sharjah based on his performance last time out. In the 3.00 my top rated is Traffic Guard, followed by Moyenne Corniche, Bullet Train, Bikini Babe and Poet. Traffic Guard is the selection but there could also be a big run from the lightly weighted and improving course and distance winning 3 year old Mirror Lake. I could not put anyone off backing this one and he will carry my “saver”. At Chester there is one televised race at 3.35 where a number of those engaged in the 3.00 at Goodwood also have entries. My top rated is Wajir but I prefer the chance of the Sir Mark Prescott inmate Nezhenka who ran really well behind Activate last time out. TV is also covering the Irish Field St Leger. This race is an all-age race, unlike its English counterpart which is for three year olds only. Top rated in my system is the complete outsider Royal and Regal, who may well be worth a small each-way interest. Several have good recent form in an open renewal. My ratings give: Royal and Regal Profound Beauty Opinion Poll Rite of Passage Halicarnassus Sans Frontieres Rajik Kite Wood Tactic
231 190 182 176 174 168 160 160 159
The selection is Ascot Gold Cup winner Rite of Passage who is unbeaten on the flat. Sans Frontieres and Profound Beauty are likely to give him most to do and have to be considered big dangers. If he can recapture his form of a couple of seasons ago, Royal and Regal isn’t out of it and is likely to start at a huge price. Earlier at 3.10 on the same card Zoffany looks to hold every chance of landing the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes.
MILLERS SLIP TO THEIR FIRST DEFEAT FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United slipped to their first league defeat of the season after a first half goal by Lionel Ainsworth sent Shrewsbury to the top of League Two. The Millers produced a spirited second half display with Shrews ‘keeper Chris Neal called into action several times, the best save coming from a Paul Warne drive in the second half. Ronnie Moore made two changes from the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over Lincoln City. The fit again Tom Elliott replaced Jeremiah Ani in attack, whilst Andy Warrington shrugged off a knee problem to take his place between the sticks at the expense of Jamie Annerson. Shrewsbury had the first halfchance when Mark Wright was found at the back post with the Millers appealing for a stoppage after Tom Newey went down with a head injury. Wright took advantage of the confusion by bringing the ball down and striking towards goal but his shot from 18 yards was blocked by his own man. On five minutes the Shrews took the lead. Wright played a one-two with Craig Disley down the left which took the Millers by surprise. Wright then sprinted into the area before squaring the ball to Lionel Ainsworth who had the simple task of sidefooting into the net. On seven minutes the Millers had their first shot on target when Elliott fired in a low shot

which was comfortably held by Neal. Shrewsbury had another half opportunity on 13 minutes when an Ainsworth corner was headed towards goal by former Miller Ian Sharps, but Warrington hung on for a comfortable save. Warrington was called into action again on 24 minutes when a dangerous cross/shot from Ainsworth almost caught out the Millers number one, but he got a late hand to the ball to keep it out. On 28 minutes a ball into the middle of midfield by Nicky Law found Adam Le Fondre who laid the ball to Danny Harrison with a neat flick, but Harrison’s shot from 25 yards took a deflection and sailed over Neal’s crossbar. On 41 minutes a long ball forward by Sharps was chested down by Matt Harrold into the path of Ainsworth whose drive from 22 yards was well held by Warrington. Good work by Law found Le Fondre in a wide right position on 41 minutes. Le Fondre then exchanged passes again with Law, this time picking the ball up 20 yards from goal but he turned the ball high and wide of the target. A minute later and the Millers carved out another opening. Newey crossed from the left to the near post where an onrushing Kevin Ellison powered a header wide of the post. The Millers were forced into a change early in the second half when Elliott was injured and replaced by Warne. Rotherham had the ball in the net just before the hour mark but Ellison’s strike was disallowed after Warne fouled ‘keeper Neal as he tried to claim a high ball. The visitors continued to press in search of an equaliser and Le Fondre came within inches
Lee Westwood: Hanging Out With The Kids and Raring To Go GOLF: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Andrew Cochrane
In an exclusive interview with the Sheffield Mercury, Europe’s top golfer on his imminent return from injury, why Justin Rose and Paul Casey deserved to miss out on Monty’s picks, and why he stands to lose £50 if Sheffield Wednesday aren’t promoted A little over a month ago, Lee Westwood was battling it out for the claret jug at a wind-swept Old Course. Despite finishing 7 shots off the lead and posing little threat to eventual champion Louis Oosthuizen, his eventual runner-up placing marked an incredible 4th top 3 finish in 5 consecutive major championships. The fact that Westwood’s charge finished with a whimper had much to do with the calf injury he was carrying, an injury which has ruled him out of competitive action since the Open, and which threatened to derail his hopes of competing in this year’s Ryder Cup. However, after what feels like an age out of the game to a player who has never experienced an injury layoff before, Westwood is desperately looking forward to hitting balls again. “I just want to get back out there. I go for an ultrasound this week, but hopefully I’ll be putting by the end of the week and hitting balls on the range next week. My comeback schedule is very regimented, but I think the layoff has done me a lot of good. The injury is feeling better than we expected it to at this point. It responded well to me walking on the course today.” We caught up with Lee at Lindrick Golf Course, venue for the inaugural Ryder Cup in 1957, and today home to the final day of the Lee Westwood Golf Academy. Time off from playing has allowed Lee to focus on more philanthropic activities, and its clear that he enjoys working with the game’s bright prospects, willingly dedicating his time to one-on-one coaching with the youngsters on the putting green. Westwood maintains that a sustained period out of the game has allowed his body to recuperate from a grueling lifestyle and spend some time at home, albeit still addicted to the game. “I watched Martin Laird finish second in the Barclays Open. Its never a nice thing to happen, especially when he had 2 putts to win it. But we’ve all been there and you can take positives away from it.” As the day drew to a close, the kids came up to thank Lee for his time and efforts and wish him well for the Ryder Cup. “I really don’t know how I’m going to play as I haven’t hit a ball in so long, but everyone raises their game for the Ryder Cup.” This will be Westwood’s 7th appearance in the Ryder Cup, and he sees his role as much as a mentor as a point-scorer. “Standing on the 1st tee of your debut Ryder Cup is one of the most intimidating experiences in golf. I think Monty will be looking to me to partner some of the rookies and give them some reassuring words.
of the breakthrough when his shot from the edge of the area was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Jason Taylor’s shot was parried into the path of Le Fondre, who miss-controlled three yards out. On 70 minutes Taylor picked up a loose ball 25 yards from goal and pulled the trigger, only to see his effort deflected narrowly wide. Six minutes later Harrison tried his luck from distance but Neal smothered at the second attempt. Law then played in Le Fondre, who shot from a narrow angle but Neal again saved superbly and unfortunately for the Millers there was nobody on hand to tap home the rebound. Shrewsbury struggled to clear their lines and allowed Warne to shoot from 25 yards but his shot was tipped wide at full-stretch by Neal. Shrewsbury soaked up a lot of second half pressure and Wright had the chance to put the game beyond doubt with five minutes remaining. He cut inside from the left and curled his shot wide of Warrington’s left hand post. Shrewsbury: C.Neal; Raven, Sadler, McAllister, Sharps, Wright, Cansdell-Sherriff, Harrold, Robinson (Van Den Broek 65), Ainsworth (McIntyre 80), Disley. Subs not used:Leslie, L.Neal, Bright, Hooman, Duyan. Rotherham: Warrington; Mullins (Fenton 87), Cresswell, Geohaghon, Newey, Law, Harrison, J.Taylor, Ellison, Elliott (Warne 49), Le Fondre. Subs not used: Green, Ashworth, Marshall, Ani, Annerson. Attendance: 6,206 (530)
I’ve played with everyone over the years; Sergio, Nick Faldo, Monty, so I think I’m the sort of guy who can play with anyone.” By his own admission, this has been the toughest Ryder Cup qualification that Westwood has ever experienced, but Westwood has little sympathy for those that missed out. “There were a lot of qualified candidates for those final places, but it was Monty’s decision in the end. Anyone that plays in the FedEx Cup does it for only one reason: money. If you choose those types of tournaments ahead of qualifying events, you’re leaving it totally to chance and you can’t blame anyone else.” But golf is not the game that it was when Lee joined the professional ranks back in 1993. “The youngsters coming through now are so much more professional than we were when we broke through. We were proper amateurs, but because of improvements in coaching and fitness training, these guys are much more rounded. If you look at Rory Mcllroy, Ryo Ishikawa, Rickie Fowler, they’re the finished article, and they’re ready to compete at the highest level straight away.” The professionalisation of the youth game is something Lee has noticed in football across the last few years. Lee’s beloved Nottingham Forest are now a solid Championship outfit, though he wasn’t sad to see the back of their South Yorkshire rivals last season. “I’ve been giving my mates who are Wednesday fans some stick since they went down. But they’d better go up with at least 72 points or I’m going to lose £50!”. So what’s next for Lee as he prepares for this month’s Ryder Cup? “I’m playing in an Ian Botham charity event in a few weeks which will be my only competitive game before I go to Wales. I’ve never played Celtic Manor so I’m going to go down early and get plenty of practice rounds in.” The whole of Europe will certainly be hoping Lee is in fine fettle in Wales. He has consistently been one of Europe’s most potent weapons against the US, amassing 16 ∏ points over the years, a total he’ll hope to add another 5 to this September. With Premiership clubs set to offload some of their assets on loan when they have to finalise their 25 man squads on Wednesday of this week, there is likely to be some jostling for position by outfits wanting to add quality to their own rosters. Meanwhile, three of United’s Academy graduates have had their short term contracts extended until the end of June
BARNSLEY SCOUTING REPORT by The Mercury Scout
Barnsley are the subject of my report this week. Barnsley used a straight 4-4-2 formation throughout the game I saw. A blustery wind affected Barnsley’s game as they attempted to play the ball long from back to front. However, Barnsley were the brighter of the two sides with Hammill being effective down the wide left channel. Throughout, the two team’s defences were on top and their central midfield players negated each others positive play through the middle of the park by closing down and getting tight quickly. When they did get the ball forward both teams lacked a cutting edge and there was very little penetrative play in behind their respective back fours. There were very few chances at both ends of the park, most attempts on goal were hit from distance and hit high or wide. Barnsley have good pace down the wide channels on both sides of the park. Both centre backs are reasonably mobile without being quick. Pace in the centre, both in midfield and up front, is very limited. Barnsley are a reasonably tall side, with players with good height in all the key positions through the spine of the team. In this game Barnsley attempted to play long from back to front most of the time, particularly to target Gray. However, a combination of the wind and competent opposing central defending gave them very little success when the strikers competed for the ball in the air. When not playing the ball long down the centre channels, Barnsley looked to get the ball out to the wide midfield players and then get crosses into the box. Despite not looking to lack pace at the back, Barnsley defended relatively deeply, thereby leaving very little space for the opposing side to play the ball into behind them. On the few occasions when passes did penetrate the back line, Steele was quick to come off his line and deal with the danger. Their opponents did not play the long ball down to the strikers very often, but when they did the Barnsley central defenders, Foster and Shackell, contained them quite easily. The visiting team’s strikers
did not move the Barnsley central defenders about too much and rarely, if ever, got in behind them. Shackell was the more likely to come out of the back four to deal with anything played long. Distribution out from the back was poor. It consisted mostly of long balls played in the general direction of the strikers, Gray and Lovre, but with very little accuracy. However, the windy conditions did not help. Goalkeeper Steele kicked long with his right foot to target both strikers, but mostly Gray. Occasionally he kicked towards the wide players, Trippier and Hammill, but with very little success. Steele was very under worked in this game and rarely had the opportunity to show off his undoubted ability. Both full backs tended to support from behind and never really got ahead of play or beyond the wide midfield players. Far too often left back McEveley was caught out as he pushed too far up the field. When the opposing team broke quickly he had to rely on Shackell covering across behind him. Shackell did very well doing this, but could have left space down the centre channels for the visitors to exploit. Both central midfielders, Colace and Arismendi, sat relatively deep to protect the back four. Either of them could break forward to support the front men from time to time, but neither of them did so very often. If anything, Arismendi tended to play a little deeper than Colace. When the central midfield players were in possession they retained the ball well, and found passes to supporting players efficiently. Sometimes this was to get the ball out wide, but on the whole they struggled to move the ball forward creatively and often ended up playing the ball back for the defenders to clear long. Both of the central midfield players worked very hard to close down and get tight on their opponents and they were very effective in protecting the back four. Hammill, on the left, was more effective than Trippier, on the right, when he travelled with the ball to take on the opposing full back. Trippier was more likely to deliver the ball early. The delivery of both players into the box was very inconsistent, but again the wind would probably have affected this. Hammill will often push right up to make a third striker, particularly when play develops down the
LORD MAYOR GIVES THUMBS UP TO SHEFFIELDʼS BID LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
The Lord Mayor says he has been bowled over by Sheffield’s sporting facilities since his post began three months ago, and is calling for the city to shout about them to secure Sheffield’s 2018 FIFA World Cup bid. The Lord Mayor Cllr Alan Law says some of the 200 plus events he has attended since starting his new role three months ago have opened his eyes to just how diverse and prestigious Sheffield’s sporting facilities are. He is now giving his backing to Sheffield’s campaign to become a host city in a successful England 2018 World Cup bid and wants the whole city to join him. He said: “To me Sheffield is England’s city of sport. Not only have we got the facilities for the sport but we have the management which is phenomenal. They are renowned nationally and internationally for managing these major events.” His thoughts were echoed when cultural ambassadors from Shangai visited Sheffield to learn how the city hosts major events and visited Sheffield International Venuesmanaged facilities including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. The Lord Mayor added: “The Shanghai visit was a great credit to what’s happening here. “On another occasion when I attended the National Lifesaving Championships at Ponds Forge, I asked ‘Why Sheffield?’ and the response was that the management backing they received was so good and now they book the venue three years in advance. I’ve also been introduced to Baton Twirling and Goalball. There is just so much going on in Sheffield.” Although originally from Barnsley, the Lord Mayor has supported Sheffield United for the last 40 years. He added: “My best memories of football have been watching Sheffield United and seeing them grow with players like Brian Deane, Tony Currie and Alan Woodward coming through the ranks. “Even though I’m a United fan I am proud of both teams and everyone in Sheffield needs to get behind the bid because this is about the whole city, not just one football team. “We have got everything in the city to host the World Cup. We have the transport systems in place; we have the hotels, the restaurants, the facilities and the management. We are world class, but we need to shout about it and show how we embrace football, diversity and contrast. “I am immensely proud of Sheffield and how it has grown and I hope the city gets this bid by texting England to 62018, signing up at Morrisons, or registering their vote on the England2018 website as Sheffield definitely deserves it.”
right hand side of the park. Both wide midfield players will work back and help defend. In attack, Lovre played slightly deeper than Gray and often came back into the hole in between the centre midfield players and Gray to link play. Both strikers were on the whole dominated in the air by the opposing centre backs. The strikers rarely, if ever got behind the opposing defence, there was very little creative interplay between them and they rarely tested or worked the opposing goalkeeper. They can both hold the ball up with their backs to goal to retain possession and then bring supporting players into the game, but neither of them attempted to turn and then run directly at opponents as they both have limited pace.

WALTON LEAVES LANE LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
Simon Walton’s ill-fated loan spell with the Blades is over after United and Plymouth Argyle agreed a cancellation. Kevin Blackwell gave the 22 year old the chance to resurrect his career at Bramall Lane in the summer and a one year loan was finalized, only for the unlucky Walton to damage cruciate knee ligaments less than halfway through the Blades’ first pre-season friendly at Mansfield. Although his rehabilitation began in Sheffield he will eventually return south when appropriate and United chief executive Trevor Birch confirmed: “The loan has been terminated and Simon is no longer with us following talks with Plymouth.” The cancellation of the contract frees up another potential loan slot for the Blades who currently have Nyron Nosworthy and Kyle Bartley on season long agreements, whilst Walton faces months on the sidelines: “What I’ve got to focus on now is getting fit again and back out there. They’ve told me that, hopefully, I could be okay around February time.”
MEET THE MANAGER LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk
Season ticket holders will have priority to attend a Meet The Manager forum at which Gary Speed will have his first opportunity to meet supporters since his recent appointment. He will be joined by chief executive Trevor Birch and, hopefully, a couple of firstteam players on Thursday 9th September in the Millennium Suite on John Street, commencing at 7.30pm. The Blades have regularly given fans the chance to put questions to the manager and senior staff on football matters in recent years and Gary has readily accepted his chance to answer them. Doors will open at 6.30pm, free tea and coffee will be available, as will a pay bar. The event - scheduled to conclude at 9pm - is by advance ticket only and on a first come, first served basis. Season ticket holders have their chance to book until 5pm on Friday 3rd September by contacting the Ticket Office and should have their membership details to hand. Any tickets remaining will be available to non season ticket holders from 9am on Monday 6th September.
SHEFFIELD UNITED… THE SAVIOUR OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton
Friday night’s 4-0 England victory represented a proud moment for Sheffield United fans, or it did in the eyes of this observer at least. This is because more important than the result, the fixture featured the rise to international pre-eminence of two players inextricably linked with the city of Sheffield. Phil Jagielka spent seven fruitful years with the Blades during which he quickly cemented his place as a fans favourite at Bramall Lane, due in no small part to his knack of scoring long range screamers at opportune moments. Since moving to Everton in 2007 his status as one of England’s most promising defenders has been solidified, despite a sickening injury that saw him miss the majority of last season. But in England’s first fixture of the European Championship 2012 Qualifying Campaign, Jagielka started, and shone in a youthful defensive set up. It is a shame that he had too much catching up to do after his injury to make this summer’s World Cup, but if he continues in his current vein of form there is certainly a bright international future ahead of him. And as if that wasn’t good enough, the unfortunate injury to Michael Dawson close to the hour mark saw the international debut of a young lad from Dronfield. Gary Cahill spent an impressive loan spell in his home city back in 2007 where just like Jagielka he excelled in the red and white of Sheffield United FC. Further pride can be claimed if it is believed that he is a born and bread Sheffield United fan. I know of an equal amount of Blades and Owls who staunchly claim that their uncle’s best friend’s cat told them his allegiance lied to their particular club. Either way he is a young lad from Sheffield who on Friday night showed immense confidence and ability in his first ever taste of international football. So here’s to a future England back four of Kyle Naughton, Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill and Kyle Walker. If only they were still at the Lane…

OWLS STUNG BY BEES MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday slipped to their first league defeat of the season at the hands of Brentford in front of the watching Sky cameras at Griffin Park. Charlie MacDonald was the match-winner for the Bees, superbly controlling and firing home in the 41st minute to give the hosts their first league win of the season, and in doing so, lifting them off the foot of the table And had it not been for a world class one-handed save from Nicky Weaver late in the second period, the margin could have been greater, as Wednesday failed to carve out any clear cut chances all afternoon in West London. The Owls reverted back to the starting line-up that defeated Hartlepool United 5-0 last weekend. Giles Coke, Tommy Spurr, Lewis Buxton and Neil Mellor all returned to the starting XI having missed out in the midweek Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Notts County. Wednesday were aiming to maintain their impeccable defensive record against a Brentford side who had failed to win in their last seven league games. Weaver, Darren Purse, Mark Beevers, Spurr and Buxton maintained their

record of having started every league game of the new season; a mean rearguard that had conceded just one goal in the opening four league games of the season. But that backline came under threat early on. Darren Potter had to be alert to clear Kevin O’Connor’s header from underneath his own crossbar, following a Craig Woodman corner. Myles Weston then whipped a superb crossfield ball from deep onto the head of Robbie Simpson, only for the Huddersfield loanee’s effort to be plucked out of the air by Weaver. In what was a pretty tedious opening 45, Wednesday’s only attempt of note came from Gary Teale, who wriggled his way past two markers down the left, before cutting inside and bending an effort narrowly over Ben Hamer’s crossbar. But just before the break the hosts took the lead. Myles Weston’s delivery continued to cause problems for the Owls defence, and his low fizzed cross from left found MacDonald in a pocket of space, who in one movement superbly brought the ball under his spell and fired low beyond Weaver’s despairing dive. It was a hammer blow for the Owls, but they started the second period brightly. Marcus Tudgay stung the palms of Hamer from the edge of the area, after clever work from Spurr down the left. But it was Brentford who continued to look the more potent in
the final third. Michael Spillane danced his way around a couple of Wednesday tackles, before reaching the byline and cutting back for MacDonald, who saw his point blank effort snuffed out by a barrage of last-gasp Wednesday tackles. Mark Beevers was the hero just minutes later, hacking the ball off the goal line, following a neat passing move from the Bees that culminated in Weston’s deflected effort. That period of Brentford pressure seemed to spark the Owls into life. Potter and substitute O’Connor weaved pretty patterns in the middle of the park, but the Owls severely lacked any real cutting edge. Alan Irvine then introduced Clinton Morrison in a bid to bolster Wednesday’s attacking options. Some clever interplay down the right saw Tudgay tee-up Coke, but his placed left-foot effort was straight down the throat of Hamer. With Wednesday committing men forward, they were always going to be vulnerable to the counter attack. Simpson, with his back to goal, saw an unbelievable effort cannon back off the crossbar, as Wednesday’s hopes of salvaging a point began to evaporate. Weaver maintained any slim hope with a top drawer save, flinging himself to his right to acrobatically keep out Nicky Adams’ rasping volley. Paul Heffernan was inches away from connecting with Potter’s low cross from the left, but it just wouldn’t go in, as Wednesday suffered their first defeat in the league this term. Brentford: Hamer, O’Connor, Woodman, Balkestein, MacDonald (Adams 64), Weston (Wood 90), Spillane, Diagouraga, Osborne, Simpson, Alexander (Hunt 81) Unused substitutes: Lee, Bean, Forster, Legge
MUST DO KEEP CALM CARRY BETTER AND ON MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Alan Irvine believes his Wednesday side deserved exactly what they got at Brentford on Sunday - their first league defeat of the 2010/11 campaign. Charlie MacDonald’s strike just before half time proved sufficient for the Bees to post their first success and climb from the bottom of the table as a result. Despite enjoying more possession after the break, the Owls struggled to make a breakthrough and left Griffin Park nursing a maiden loss. Irvine said: “We got what we deserved and that was not a lot. We huffed and puffed but didn’t really create a great deal. “We underhit our passes and were well below the standards we have set during the early part of the season. We must do better.” The Wednesday chief instantly rebuffed any talk of complacency given that the two sides occupied opposite slots in the League One table ahead of the live Sky TV clash: “That was never going to enter anyone’s thinking. I said in the Press last week that I thought Brentford were in a false position and that they are a very capable side. “And full credit to Brentford today. They played very well and fully deserved the win. “For us, it’s about bouncing back, that’s what we have to do and we will try to do that against Carlisle at Hillsborough next Saturday.”
Owls: Weaver, Buxton, Purse, Beevers, Spurr, Sedgwick (O’Connor 54), Potter, Coke, Teale (Heffernan 75), Mellor (Morrison 64), Tudgay Unused substitutes: Jameson, Otsemobor, Jones, Miller Attendance: 5,396 (1,187 away)
FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob
If I hear the phrase, “the table has been turned upside down” one more time I will garrotte the closet person to me. It was absolutely inevitable that we would lose at Brentford because that is what Wednesday do. What has to be remembered is that one loss doesn’t make us “a pile of cack third tier outfit” which is how we were described by one elderly gentleman in the pub during the game on Sunday. To be fair, he was reading the Sunday Sport and during the quiz (I bet they don’t have quizzes during Manchester United games by the way) he was convinced that Billy Wright was one of the co-inventors of powered aircraft so I wasn’t that worried by his opinion. Put simply, Brentford were bang up for it and didn’t let us play which forced us to rely on the inevitable long ball which they dealt with fairly easily. Anyway, they owed us one from 2005 so fair play to them. Hopefully, the feelgood factor (which is what I would call the emotion one would experience if one could power slam Simon Cowell) will continue to blossom with a good result against fellow high-flyers, Carlisle. I’m sure Frankie Simek will get a great reception on his return. He wasn’t the same player after his injury and without it, I would’ve loved to have had him as our right back for the next 10 years - I thought he was that good. Finally, a debt of gratitude is owed to JC Snugsville who was my super-sub during my enforced absence. Also JC recently got hitched and congratulations must be expressed to him and his new wife, the beautiful Shanna Snugsville. Lets hope the patter of tiny Wednesdayite feet is not too far away…
